Researchers develop light-activated carbamazepine derivatives for targeted neuropathic pain treatment

Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have developed light-activated derivatives of carbamazepine, an anti-epileptic drug, to treat neuropathic pain using photopharmacology.

By incorporating a light-sensitive switch, the drug can be activated by specific light wavelengths, allowing for targeted treatment. These derivatives, carbazopine-1 and carbadiazocine, are activated by amber light, enabling local and reversible control of nerve signals. 

In experiments with zebrafish larvae, the drugs controlled movement in response to light. Carbadiazocine showed analgesic effects in rat models without causing anesthesia or toxicity. 

This light-based therapy offers a promising alternative to opioids, potentially reducing side effects and increasing treatment precision. 

The team is now working on activating drugs with infrared light for deeper tissue penetration, funded by the European Innovation Council's PHOTOTHERAPORT project.

Hospitals utilize all sorts of different drugs for anaesthesia and analgesia (pain relief) depending on the patient and the type of procedure etc.

For amputation surgeries, a patient is typically given general or spinal anaesthesia (general keeps you asleep, spinal keeps you numb from the waist/ limb down).

After the operation, the patient is prescribed medication to manage the pain and inflammation. There are many types of drugs that can be used, including but not limited to:

Opioids - Morphine and Fentanyl

Anaesthetics - Lidocaine

NSAIDs - Ibuprofen and Aspirin

Others - Ketamine and Acetaminophen (Paracetamol)

Antibiotics are also prescribed to prevent infections. Medical operations have extremely strict regulations and protocols regarding hygiene and sanitation.

This child (and hundreds more) had nothing. she was operated on without anaesthesia, general or otherwise, probably had no access to clean water and fresh food, most definately didnt have access to the medication she needed (pain meds and prophylactic antibiotics).

The doctors operating probably did so without electricity, appropriate medical equipment, on top of being extremely understaffed and overworked, and under the constant threat of being buried alongside their patients under the rubble.

Calpol (Paracetamol 120mg) is used to relieve mild-to-moderate pain and fever. pretty sure an amputation is slightly above moderate.

what about the phantom pain? the psychological damage? the unliveable conditions in the entirety of Gaza?

why are the living treated like or less than the dead? doesn't every international law and legislation under the sun protect and guarantee the right to adequate healthcare? what is wrong with human beings?
