The Montoya family are celebrating Josefina turning 10 years old today! For the occasion, her sisters Ana, Francisca, and Clara have brought out Mamá’s heirloom shawl, necklace, and black lace fan. Josefina feels very elegant and grown up wearing her late mother’s fancy accessories.

They’re also celebrating the heroic actions Josefina took when her friend Mariana was struck by a rattlesnake, and her pet goat Sombrita was also in danger of being hurt. Josefina knew exactly what to do to protect Sombrita and heal Mariana. As a memento, Papá gives her the rattles of a rattlesnake that he had encountered as a child. “Now I am giving them to you,” he says, “because I am proud of you.”

Josefina has never felt so happy or so proud. “I’m going to put these in my memory box,” she says to Tía Magdalena. “They’ll remind me of the moment when I found out something important about myself. I found out that I am a healer.”

As her stories progress, Josefina understands that healing goes beyond just treating injuries and illness. She nurtures and raises Sombrita after the little goat’s mother dies. She heals the broken trust between her and Tía Magdalena. She even finds a way to begin healing the deep grief her family has felt since Mamá died. “We’re all given second chances,” she says to Papá. “We just have to be brave enough to take them.”

I forgot to elaborate on the last name thing. There's a lot of cultural background to Spanish Family Names, so I'll just share the basic [First Name] [First Surname] [Second Surname]. It can change depending which country you hail from but TL;DR traditionally you get the surname of dad + mom. Mom never loses maiden name + descendants carry family name, usually one gen (but you can choose to do more). Ex: Giovanni Fernandez Montoya + Ana Garcia Castillo = child - Oscar. Oscar name = Oscar Fernandez-Castillo Garcia.

I talked with my friend abt Oscar potentially seeing Marie as a mom figure/aunt + how he either does know his real last name or doesn't, depending what info the orphanage had about him or if they even actually gave him a last name. Alternatively he might also have wanted to give himself a last name to honor his heritage. So honoring Marie and passing down her legacy, he'd adopt her last name but also keep "his own" last name (depending what theory you like). So now you have Oscar Pilon Garcia or Oscar Garcia Pilon.

Then, I brought up how he might want a last name to "fit in" with the people/culture around him (assimilating/acculturating) and adopt a more western name. So then he'd be, for example taking "Shaw" from your list, Oscar Pilon Garcia Shaw or Oscar Garcia Pilon Shaw.

Just an idea; I don't even remember how Oscar was described in the story, but because his name was Oscar I just always assumed he was Latino or Hispanic. Can correct me if I'm wrong !!

-This is fascinating to me. My friend is Puerto Rican and had a similar idea. They very much believe he is Latino and would have a Latino last name but never thought about adopting Marie’s name which is incredibly interesting.

Every time I visit my grandparents I always make sure to record some of our conversations because there's just no other way to capture their ways.
