#wish there were a class discord or a chill teacher so i could share it#fr though I'm like “oh we're talking about freshwater? hey did you know that agricultural runoff is causing accelerated eutrophication?”#and that a lot of the runoff is bc of erosion caused by the destruction of ecosystems and their vegetation that would've kept soil in place#and the runoff is mostly compromised of fertilizer and bacteria and pesticides from the agriculture and sediment from the eroded land#and that crop irrigation is so inefficient that literally 40% of irrigation water never reaches the crops#and don't even get me started on the FUCKING CORN SUBSIDIES#god those fucking corn subsidies#“hey boudicca what's the worst policy choice the us government made in the 1930s–40s?”#“was it American isolationism? maybe increased militarization? the garbage treatment of women and minorities?”#wrong! it was not stopping those fucking corn subsidies#(this is a joke obviously those other things were worse)#(I'm not actually saying this silly little agricultural practice was worse than Japanese internment don't worry)#but i AM saying that at some point they should've fucking phased out those goddamn corn subsidies#do you wanna know why California grows so much corn even though it's an incredibly water intensive crop and California is dry as shit?#I'll give you three guesses#anyway sorry for rambling my point is fuck industrial agriculture#agriculture#described

im always going to be an advocate for children's rights because 19 out of 50 states in the us allow corporal punishment in public schools and the only 2 states have banned corporal punishment in private schools. more fucking so, corporal punishments are levered disproportionately onto children who are black, disabled, or a boy. [NIH] if that doesn't make you fucking shake and want to scream then what the fuck are you doing
#if you look further into the report linked you'll find that#only 67% of corporal punishment takes place when a child is behaving violently#(which i still fucking hate and do not fucking condone and never will)#37% of corporal punishment is done due to swearing#and then there's also the minor things mentioned like fucking laughing in the hallway#im fucking foaming at the mouth im going to rip these teachers to fucking shreds#what the fuck is wrong with you#what the FUCK#childrens rights#tw child abuse#child abuse#because that what it is#corporal punishment#tw corporal punishment#teachers#america#american school system#FUCK the american school system#FUCK the american government#i hate them#i hate it#school system#ableism#tw ableism#racism#tw racism#ableism tw#racism tw#gotta get all the tw tags

my biggest fuck-up.
SO. This all started yesterday. I sat down in class, attentive and ready to learn (LIAR ALERT! I had gotten stuck in two hours of traffic and was ready to crash and sleep through half the day). I was late, and we were in American Government.
My teacher was about to sign us five simple, easy pages to read and call it a day. But my smart-mouthed, dumbass self had decided to make a joke about writing five pages on the Pledge of Allegiance instead of reading these pages.
My teacher looked me in the eyes, raised her eyebrows, and said, "are you serious?"
I looked back at her, not one to back down. I opened my mouth and choked out; "oh yeah, bro."
She blinked slowly at me, and when she passed out our assignments, I looked in terror to see she had taken me seriously. Written on the paper: 'five-page essay on the Pledge of Allegiance'.
Tears welled up in my eyes. I looked over at my desk mate. He looked back. With shaking hands, I showed him my paper.
With a deadpan face, he leaned in and whispered to me; "you're fucking cooked."
I nodded slowly, whispering back to him; "you know it, bitch."
And that's the story of how I have exactly one week to bullshit my way through this essay.

why is my american gov textbook literally as old as i am !!!!!! this is not okay theres around 800 people in my schools graduating class alone and there will probably be thousands more required to read this before my school gets new ones. students are going to be learning off of material a literal lifetime away from their own experiences and are going to be expected to use that info as a framework for informing actual views on current events and politics. how are we supposed to learn about our government without learning about the 2006 housing crisis or the 2008 recession or the 2016 election or anything actually informing the state of the american government today !!!!!! and HOW the HELL did anyone let this book be published with the constant condescension and clear partisan views the author has??? i am SICK of reading this DOUCHEBAG AUTHORS rhetorical fucking questions and american nationalism and sixth grade language !!!! i am SICK of going over THE SAME FUCKING MATERIAL EVERY FUCKING YEAR I KNOW WHAT THE GODDAMN PREAMBLE IS !!!!!!!! i want to know whats going on in the WORLD !!!!! i want teachers to encourage critical thinking and activism and CHANGE !!!! the most interesting part of this entire goddamn year has been an open ended discussion about the role of governments in society but it was ruined by my teacher constantly inserting her own opinion as if it were fact and then cutting it short because of course we needed to go over another fuckkng slideshow. i want this system and this curriculum to stop being complicit in whatever the government spits at us and actually teach history in a way that will encourage students to challenge it.
and the textbook spelled "the" wrong btw.
#ramblings#magruders american government by william a mcclenaghan#oh how i hate you#this is not a critique on teachers as a whole btw ik how hard they work and ik their working conditions#im just frustrated with the country as a whole but hey what else is new

Guys, I need to know something (if you're american)
#they made us write poems#they had us watch an in depth break down of how a tower falls#in college i bailed every 9/11 because it was a cop school and they all with homeland security senpai would notice them#they showed us videos#they told us stories of where they were#they show pictures#they took us to the pentagon to see the benches#they never talked about the war crimes that followed#they show the interviews with survivors#they always show the interview with those who were orphaned by it#i heard a kid make a holocaust joke and the other kids laughed#but that same kid made a 9 11 joke and they told him that was too far#i have written journals about where i was during the event and been graded on it#every year its the call to arms for teachers to oversaturate the brains of young children with death#they think the children dont see how they hyperfocus on the tragedy#but ive been in 2 active shooter situations in my life and have done more shooter drills than i can count#they force the children to consume the lives lost that day and pick at them like they are meat we have been chewing on for 23 years#this is why so many americans make 9 11 jokes#the government was the first one to make that tradedy a joke by using those lives to justify imperialism#and the edu system made it a joke by baking it into a stars and stripes pie and cramming it into our mouths every year for 8 hours or more#ill tell you that pie tastes more bitter with every damn covid death that was played off like it wasnt a big deal

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #38
Oct 11-18 2024
President Biden announced that this Administration had forgiven the student loan debt of 1 million public sector workers. The cancellation of the student loan debts of 60,000 teachers, firefighters, EMTs, nurses and other public sector workers brings the total number of people who's debts have been erased by the Biden-Harris Administration using the Public Service Loan Forgiveness to 1 million. the PSLF was passed in 2007 but before President Biden took office only 7,000 people had ever had their debts forgiven through it. The Biden-Harris team have through different programs managed to bring debt relief to 5 million Americans and counting despite on going legal fights against Republican state Attorneys General.
The Federal Trade Commission finalizes its "one-click to cancel" rule. The new rule requires businesses to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to sign up for it. It also requires more up front information to be shared before offering billing information.
The Department of Transportation announced that since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration there are 1.7 million more construction and manufacturing jobs and 700,000 more jobs in the transportation sector. There are now 400,000 more union workers than in 2021. 60,000 Infrastructure projects across the nation have been funded by the Biden-Harris Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Under this Administration 16 million jobs have been added, including 1.7 construction and manufacturing jobs, construction employment is the highest ever recorded since records started in 1939. 172,000 manufacturing jobs were lost during the Trump administration.
The Department of Energy announced $2 billion to protect the U.S. power grid against growing threats of extreme weather. This money will go to 38 projects across 42 states and Washington DC. It'll upgrade nearly 1,000 miles worth of transmission lines. The upgrades will allow 7.5 gigawatts of new grid capacity while also generating new union jobs across the country.
The EPA announced $125 million to help upgrade older diesel engines to low or zero-emission solutions. The EPA has selected 70 projects to use the funds on. They range from replacing school buses, to port equipment, to construction equipment. More than half of the selected projects will be replacing equipment with zero-emissions, such as all electric school buses.
The Department of The Interior and State of California broke ground on the Salton Sea Species Conservation Habitat Project. The Salton Sea is California's largest lake at over 300 miles of Surface area. An earlier project worked to conserve and restore shallow water habitats in over 4,000 acres on the southern end of the lake, this week over 700 acres were added bring the total to 5,000 acres of protected land. The Biden-Harris Administration is investing $250 million in the project along side California's $500 million. Part of the Administration's effort to restore wild life habitat and protect water resources.
The Department of Energy announced $900 Million in investment in next generation nuclear power. The money will help the development of Generation III+ Light-Water Small Modular Reactors, smaller lighter reactors which in theory should be easier to deploy. DoE estimates the U.S. will need approximately 700-900 GW of additional clean, firm power generation capacity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Currently half of America's clean energy comes from nuclear power, so lengthening the life space of current nuclear reactors and exploring the next generation is key to fighting climate change.
The federal government took two big steps to increase the rights of Alaska natives. The Departments of The Interior and Agricultural finalized an agreement to strengthen Alaska Tribal representation on the Federal Subsistence Board. The FSB oversees fish and wildlife resources for subsistence purposes on federal lands and waters in Alaska. The changes add 3 new members to the board appointed by the Alaska Native Tribes, as well as requiring the board's chair to have experience with Alaska rural subsistence. The Department of The Interior also signed 3 landmark co-stewardship agreements with Alaska Native Tribes.
The Department of Energy announced $860 million to help support solar energy in Puerto Rico. The project will remove 2.7 million tons of CO2 per year, or about the same as taking 533,000 cars off the road. It serves as an important step on the path to getting Puerto Rico to 100% renewable by 2050.
The Department of the Interior announced a major step forward in geothermal energy on public lands. The DoI announced it had approved the Fervo Cape Geothermal Power Project in Beaver County, Utah. When finished it'll generate 2 gigawatts of power, enough for 2 million homes. The BLM has now green lit 32 gigawatts of clean energy projects on public lands. A major step toward the Biden-Harris Administration's goal of a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035.
Bonus: President Biden meets with a Kindergarten Teacher who's student loans were forgiven this week

In an ideal world, it would be a program for Deaf teachers, the government could even put it under vocational rehab if they wanted to! Unfortunately, even some Deaf schools don't employ many Deaf teachers and a lot of teaching jobs end up going to interpreters or just hearing & non-signing people instead. But you're right and I love what you said, we can hope 🩷
idk man. i just think itd be really cool if sign language classes were mandatory throughout primary school. yeah because it would make communication with deaf kids and autistic/nonverbal kids much easier. and those kids would be accessible to the others so they cold make friends and have healthy relationships. yeah. and kids would eat that shit up man. like their own little secret language? they love that.
#during the school year i teach under a program set up by a CODA which is awesome but it's not a government (public school) job#i have a few regulars at my primary job who work at the local Deaf primary school and none of them can carry much of a convo#they can probably sign at a 2nd grade level or so but that's really not enough#there's a decent residential school w Deaf teachers but that requires being willing to send your child away for like 9 months of the year#this turned into basically a rant at the current system 😅 sorry but yeah i think the first step to teaching sign language in primary school#is overhauling the current system for teaching Deaf students as a whole#some schools are decent at it but a lot of us end up in special ed with 2 rotating terps and missing half the day in speech therapy#or in a 'Deaf school' surrounded by hearies. the exceptions in the US are all in like MD KY CA and TX#even then it's specific areas of those states#i didnt meet a Deaf adult until i was 17. i didnt get into the community until i was 20.#Deaf teachers in Deaf schools=> proof of concept that being Deaf does not mean youre incapable of caring for students=>#Deaf teachers in hearing high schools as a language elective=> studies on d/D/HoH feelings of inclusivity with their peers who learn=>#Language elective starting in middle schools=> improved literacy rates in Deafies bc they have teachers who understand them at a younger age#=> primary school inclusion of sign languages in the curriculum starting in third grade=> studies on whether hearing kids need reading-#-skills to understand signed languages=> sign language in curriculum starting in first grade or ideally kindergarten#is kind of the funnel i'd imagine we'd see for optimal chances of having fluent teachers in primary education for hearing students#which would. take at least a couple of decades.#also if this sounds argumentative i dont mean it that way at all!! this is a dream for me but it needs to be done right.#and no one is going to fund it the right way without a fight. terps are great but outside of codas they arent native.#we need native speakers teaching our language or it gets twisted fast. even my favorite (/most fluent non-native speaker) terp-#-cant sign a simple word like cereal- she signs soup for both soup and cereal 😭#and she's been using asl since she was 12 and is almost 50 now. i love her to death and ive tried correcting her#but it wasnt reinforced that way when she was young and now it's ingrained in her.#anyway sorry op if you read all of this i know it was very much this is just something im really passionate about and i want to see happen#like youre so right and i love the fact that youre talking about it and that so many people agree i just have a lot of feelings about it#ALSO if you havent read them i highly recommend the books:#Forbidden Signs by Douglas Baynton#Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language by Nora Groce#and Introduction to American Deaf Culture by Thomas K Holcomb#(obv a usamerican POV but the middle one is relevant anywhere i think) for their insights on sign language teaching/integration

Trump Is Project 2025
Trump claims he has “no idea who is behind” Project 2025.
Hogwash!
Project 2025’s nearly thousand-page plan for a total MAGA takeover of America was assembled by more than 25 of Trump’s own administration officials.
Trump’s Make America Great Again PAC is running ads calling it “Trump’s Project 2025.”
CNN found that at least 140 people who worked for Trump are involved in the project, including six of his cabinet secretaries.
Trump’s campaign press secretary and his adviser Stephen Miller star in Project 2025’s recruitment video.
If Trump has “no idea” who they are, that’s some serious cognitive decline!
I can see why Trump wants to distance himself from such a toxic plan. Page 5 calls for jailing teachers and librarians over banned books.
Page 455 calls for “abortion surveillance” and stripping Americans of reproductive freedom.
Pages 587 and 592 have plans to gut overtime pay rules.
Page 489 demands the government prioritize “married men and women” over any other type of family.
Page 371 proposes privatizing nuclear waste disposal. What could go wrong?
Trump has promised to be a “dictator” on Day One. The Supreme Court has given their blessing. Project 2025 is the how-to manual for Trump’s dictatorship.
Trump is Project 2025. He cannot escape it.

Ryan Adamczeski at The Advocate:
Donald Trump claims he has "nothing to do" with Project 2025, but he has a playbook of his own that would be devastating for LGBTQ+ Americans and other marginalized communities. The former president's reelection website features a section entitled Agenda 47, which hosts dozens of videos of Trump outlining his policies for if he returns to office. Several policies threaten the LGBTQ+ community, spanning across education, health care, and the military. In one video titled "President Trump's Plan to Protect Children From Left-Wing Gender Insanity," Trump promised to outlaw gender-affirming care for minors at the federal level, and “cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age.” He also promised to ban transgender athletes from competing on teams that match their gender identity.
Trump stated that he "will ask Congress to pass a bill establishing that the only genders recognized by the United States government are male and female — and they are assigned at birth.” He then claimed that being transgender was "invented" by the "radical left," though he did not use the term "transgender" once throughout Agenda 47. “No serious country should be telling its children that they were born with the wrong gender — a concept that was never heard of in all of human history — nobody’s ever heard of this, what’s happening today," Trump rambled. "It was all when the radical left invented it just a few years ago.”
[...] As for public education, Trump vowed to "cut federal funding for any school or program pushing critical race theory, gender ideology, or other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children." He also promised to "create a new credentialing body to certify teachers who embrace patriotic values."
While Donald Trump may claim to have “nothing to do” with Project 2025, it and Agenda 47 are practically like-for-like in many key policy areas. #Agenda47 #Project2025

One detail in the worldbuilding of Back to the Future Part II (1989) that is often overlooked: the police department of Hill Valley in 2015 seems to be made up of statuesque women. And no, it wasn't just the two cops that found Jennifer on a bench and took her home; every time we see a police officer in the background of Hill Valley 2015, they were female.
This was a prediction that did not come true: women only make up 12% of all police officers in the United States today.
However, I can see what they were thinking with this. Consider that it was extremely rare to have female police officers in American cities before the 1970s. So, anticipating the entrance of women into police work, Bob Gale and Zemeckis might have foresaw a future where women make up half of all police officers, or even a majority. There are many examples of professions that were once majority male but over time, became majority female, like primary school teachers and pharmacists. In some countries, like Russia and Cuba, the majority of medical doctors are women, for example. Gender-based shifts in professions happen all the time.
The novelization of Back to the Future Part II gives a bit more information. According to the book, police departments in 2015 are majority women because it was believed by city governments that women's nurturing nature made them more likely to be caring, and less likely to be violent or brutal.
Fun fact: the woman who played the blonde cop was Mary Ellen Trainor, Robert Zemeckis's wife, best known as the only person to ever be in both The Goonies and Monster Squad, and she played a Mom both times. Mary Ellen Trainor also introduced her husband's friend, Spielberg, to her best friend, Kathleen Kennedy, who became Spielberg's most frequent producer-collaborator (Kennedy produced E.T. and the Back to the Future movies).
