ÖKÜZGÖZÜ (Oh-cooz-goe-zue) is a grape variety and Turkish wine from Mid-Eastern Anatolias. Öküzgözü derives its name from the fact that it has large, blackberries that resemble a bull’s eye. Öküzgözü it is a medium bodied, fruity wine, with some tannins and high levels of acidity. Alcohol content is usually between 12.5% and 13.5 %. Öküzgözü offers a delicate bouquet. It has red fruit flavors like strawberry and cherry and tea and floral flavors. Other flavors and aromas include Raspberry, Dark cherry, Mint, Chocolate, Eucalyptus, Sour Cherry, Pomegranate, Ripe Plum, Cherry Marmalade, Clove and Cardamom. Öküzgözü makes soft, suple and easy to drink wines. Due to its acidity, these wines age well. Wines from the Öküzgözü grape have a light red colour like Pinot Noir. The grape prefers cold winters and hot, dry summer seasons and typically thrive in soils composed of red clay, decomposed granite, light chalky clay soils and sandyclay, with underlying limestone. Ridge’s 2015 Geyserville Zinfandel from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County has been produced in every vintage since 1966. It is a blend of 70% Zinfandel, 15% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah, 3% Alicante Bouschet. The 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary vintage released by Ridge. The oldest parcels in the vineyard are a classic 19th-century field blend of mostly zinfandel and carignane. A field blend is where vines of the various varietals have grown together in the rows. Geyserville was the first California zinfandel since the late 1930s to be made and classified as a “fine wine.” Ridge started producing Cabernet in 1962 and in 1966 Geyserville Zinfandel was made in the same traditional style. The grapes are picked for ideal ripeness, fermented on natural yeasts, and barrel-aged. The 14.5% alcohol is undetectable due the excellent well-balanced flavors and structure. The wine has intense dark berry fruits, gravel/earth, black licorice, mint, and exotic spice aromas/flavor with intense bramble fruit and minerality which help provide great depth of flavor and a long finish. The grapes from “Old Patch”, Geyserville’s oldest vines planted in 1891, are a field blend comprised of carignane, zinfandel, alicante bouschet, mataro, petite sirah, cinsault, grand noir, grenache noir, black muscat, peloursin, burger, petite bouschet, aubin, syrah, bastardo, valdiguié, mortaou, criolla mediana #2. A high % of old-vine carignane provides unique character. The vineyards are on the western hills of Russian River’s old riverbed comprised of stony clay soil which imparts a distinctive mineral character to the wine. Domaine Serge Laloue Sancerre Rouge 2016 is 100% Pinot Noir which is organic and hand harvested. This wine hails from the Loire Valley. This is a beautiful Pinot that is light and liberally with beautiful fruit and extremely well balanced. The grapes are de-stemmed and spend 10 days being cold maceration. Fermentation continues for 14 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with twice-daily punchdowns. It is then Aged for 8 months in 50% stainless steel and 50% demi-muid French oak. The alcohol is 13%. This Domaine is located in the Loire Valley IG France and was established in the early 1930's by Francois and Simone Laloue. The family farm that grew grapes, grain, tobacco and raised livestock. In 1960, their son Serge took charge of vines to concentrate on viticulture and winemaking. The Domaine is now run by Serge's children, Franck, who’s been making the wine since 1990, and daughter Christine. The estate’s 21 hectares of vines of the Domaine are approximately 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Pinot Noir. The terroir is stony and limestone based which provides the wines with mineral notes and hints of gunflint. The wines of are very aromatic and develop floral and fruity notes. The siblings practice sustainable agriculture and grow grass between the vine rows encouraging the roots to grow deeper. This technique also reduces erosion and tempers the natural vigor of the vines. Franck further reduces yields by de-budding in the spring and pruning heavily. I love a good Bordeaux, and “No”, I am not a Boomer. Bordeaux brings classic flavors and consistency based on blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc to create a beautiful, smooth and complex wine. The dominant grape depends on whether it is Right Bank or Left Bank. I love Merlot on its own or in blends. It’s silky smooth, deep, dark and delicious. Château Laffitte Carcasset 2014 Saint-Estèphe is a Bordeaux blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 month, of which, 30% is new French oak. The vines for this wine cover 74 acres on Garonne gravel over clay-limestone subsoil. This wine is an elegant St-Estèphe with beautiful ripe fruit and savory spices. The tannins and fruit are big yet well balanced and the wine is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon that gives it the structure as well as it’s juicy fruitiness. Merlot provides depth and character along with darker richer fruit while Cabernet Franc provides spice and structure. This chateau’s name dates back to the 18th-century When Joseph Laffitte created the estate. This wine comes from the heart of Saint-Estèphe. In 2016, the estate was sold by the Padirac family to Pierre Rousseau. Hubert de Bouard, the famous winemaker and owner of Chateau Angelus, is a consultant for the estate, which has recently increased the quality of their wines. Saint-Estèphe is one of the Left Bank red wine appellations of Bordeaux, known for reds based wines which are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Saint-Estèphe is located a the northern part of the Haut-Médoc and the gravelly shores of the Gironde. Sebastien David "Kezako" St Nicolas de Bourgueil 2017 - Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley As a Cabernet Franc lover I found this wine to be classically well balanced and delicious. The wine has a lively acidity but it was not overpowering and off putting like you often find in many Natural wines. This wind is not one note and is very complex. I highly recommend it! The winemaker was born and makes wine in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil in the Loire Valley. Sebastien David comes from a family wine making history that extends 15 generations to 1634. His primary focus is 15 hectares of Cabernet planted by his grandparents before the Second World War. Sebastien makes natural wines from fruit that is Ecocert certified and biodynamically farmed. He utilizes ancient techniques in his winemaking passed down through the generations and has been producing Cabernet Franc wines since 1999. He works primarily with whole grape clusters, uses wild yeasts and carbonic maceration for 25 days to preserve the integrity and flavors of the fruit. His wines use minimal sulfur and are bottled without the benefit of filtration or fining. And then this happened...Nothing better than drinking incredible wines with great friends! A Riesling from Trimbach in Alsace, France, that was bright and fresh with the distinct oily viscosity and big time petrol notes. Then we moved on to the Clos Fantine Faugeres, from Cabrerolles, France, a Syrah, Grenache, Carignan blend that was funky, fruity, sour and acidic all at the same time. Next we’re two beautiful Piemonte (Piedmont) Nebbiolos from Mascarello and DeForville. Once they opened up they were very expressive with distinctive sour cherry and rose petal notes and a touch of cigar box.
