Ridge’s 2015 Geyserville Zinfandel from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County has been produced in every vintage since 1966. It is a blend of 70% Zinfandel, 15% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah, 3% Alicante Bouschet. The 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary vintage released by Ridge. The oldest parcels in the vineyard are a classic 19th-century field blend of mostly zinfandel and carignane. A field blend is where vines of the various varietals have grown together in the rows. Geyserville was the first California zinfandel since the late 1930s to be made and classified as a “fine wine.” Ridge started producing Cabernet in 1962 and in 1966 Geyserville Zinfandel was made in the same traditional style. The grapes are picked for ideal ripeness, fermented on natural yeasts, and barrel-aged. The 14.5% alcohol is undetectable due the excellent well-balanced flavors and structure. The wine has intense dark berry fruits, gravel/earth, black licorice, mint, and exotic spice aromas/flavor with intense bramble fruit and minerality which help provide great depth of flavor and a long finish. The grapes from “Old Patch”, Geyserville’s oldest vines planted in 1891, are a field blend comprised of carignane, zinfandel, alicante bouschet, mataro, petite sirah, cinsault, grand noir, grenache noir, black muscat, peloursin, burger, petite bouschet, aubin, syrah, bastardo, valdiguié, mortaou, criolla mediana #2. A high % of old-vine carignane provides unique character. The vineyards are on the western hills of Russian River’s old riverbed comprised of stony clay soil which imparts a distinctive mineral character to the wine.
