2 days ago, while using for one of my birthday freebies for a free large bucket of popcorn at one of my local movie theatre chains at AMC Theatres (as I'm an AMC Stubs member), I went and saw Dog Man early before it's general release date yesterday. I'll give this at 9/10.
I'm even familiar with Peter Hastings, the director and vocal effects for Dog Man, who did work at Warner Bros. and Disney for their Saturday morning blocks, and on cartoons like Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brian on Kids’ WB, as well as Mrs. Munger's Class for Disney's One Saturday Morning Block on ABC.

Mini Review - The Blackening (2023)
Tumblr media
i really like it (high tier?) 🤔
Quite a Black-ass funny-ass horror, but much more of an interesting Black movie than a horror. Like, the main horror is in the racist murderer at a cabin in the woods. Like,... I'm not even gonna explain that. You either get it or you don't. Which brings me to the main thing I wanna say. This really is for Black people. I wouldn't recommend it for people who aren't in some way "Black" (biracials, getcha ass in here).
I'm serious when I say this isn't for Euros. Like, y'all really shouldn't* watch this unless you were out of the blue invited by Black people or are yourself very involved with Blackness in some way. (whatever dafuq that means) Should full-on Euros who have no actual exposure to Blackness see this movie? Absolutely not. Everything's dangerous in the wrong hands, and some of y'all asses are gonna do the absolute wrong shit with this. Intentionally or not.
*Pre-Edit: I heard a room of Black people (including some cast members) completely disagree with me in Way Up With Angela Yee’s video (timestamped).
Now that I'm done talking to the non-Blacks, let's get on with it.

Y'all, this some shit. God damn. So glad I just happened to see this in a small theatre filled to a third with mostly Afros. Got to enjoy the reactions almost as much as the movie. Is it great, though? As a Black movie, yeah. As a horror movie, nah. As a Black horror, yep. As a Black comedy horror, hell yeah. And to be real, I don't think non-Black reviews/opinions/criticisms should even be taken into account for this one. Like, I read 7 recent reviews on Letterboxd before getting to Darryl Buckhanan's and seeing all the convincing I needed. This ain't for everybody. And I'm glad it ain't. Let ma ass be. Real talk,... how many o'y'all would'a failed that shit? 💀
Real talk, I didn't trust this movie to not be for Euros because of the director (Tim Story). Here me out! Of his 23 movies listed on Letterboxd, I've only seen five: Barbershop (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Think Like a Man (2012) (they just had to put Rihana’s abuser in this 🙄), and this one. While I enjoyed all of the other four, I 1) haven't seen his other Black-casted works and 2) strongly suspected Shaft (2019) of being made for Euros everytime I saw its preview in theatres. Never bothered to confirm that suspicion, but I don't feel the need to. Fortunately, that review convinced me of this one and I saw it yesterday.
Side Notes:
Would not recommend watching 3Peat Presents: The Blackening - Uncensored before the movie if you're already interested. If you ain't, then go ahead and ask yourself if you want a feature length film inspired by this 4 minute Comedy Central skit. (the answer is yes)
Already saw it and interested in hearing some of the cast and crew talk about it? Here ya go:

Waitin' for my favorite Afro streamers to talk about The Blackening. fuckers better come on
Happy Juneteenth, mofos
Pre-Edit: I realized while listening to interviews and doing my Crew Data that this movie probably won't fully succeed unless Euros watch it too. That’s the business side of it. I’m speaking on more of a personal matter in comparison. meh 🤷🏿‍♂️ Shortly after typing the above, I heard a room of Black people (including some cast members) completely disagree with me in Way Up With Angela Yee’s video (timestamped).
Tests:
I’m gonna skip 4 crew tests and hold off on posting Crew Data for now. Here’s the test process for the other 16, though.

'Ooh, look what you made her do! After months of justifiable frustration over the scarcity of affordable tickets to Taylor Swift’s now iconic Eras concert tour, the arguably reigning queen of pop is bringing her show to multiplexes around North America… and it’s still proving impossible to get tickets.
In what amounted to a starting bell ringing in Swiftie fans’ ears, tickets went on surprise sale this morning for a previously unannounced concert film of Swift’s Eras tour—and as of press time, the film is playing in North American theater chains AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, beginning on Friday, Oct. 13. But if you wanted to get tickets to that opening weekend, and you’re only learning about this right now, chances are you’ve already missed your chance to see it.
The Taylor Swift film has proved so exciting, in fact, that it’s achieved what no film in 2023 could dream of. No, not Mario, not Marvel, and not even the combined zeitgeist-defining thrill of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer could crash the website of the largest theater chain in North America, but here we are several hours removed from AMC Theatres’ website being overwhelmed to the point of breaking for much of Thursday morning.
Over the last several hours, the mass surge of Tay Tay fans proved so immense for AMC’s servers that moviegoers hoping to buy tickets to anything today were met with waiting queues before they could access the site...
The boost in enthusiasm for moviegoing could not have come at a better time for AMC either. Earlier this month, AMC Entertainment reported a sales increase of 15 percent for the second quarter of the year (April through June). In other words, even without the two-headed triumph of Barbenheimer, AMC was making money from its highest quarterly attendance since before the pandemic in 2019...'

AND THAT'S A WRAP, PEOPLE! THE LAST INSTALLMENT IN PETER JACKSON'S TRILOGY HITS AMC THEATRES TODAY!
NOTE: And so here marks the end of my "Extended Editions-at-AMC" journey, people, and there will be a lot of misty-eyed faces in the audience for this one, mine included. The Greatest Trilogy Ever Made.
"In the conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, "The Lord of the Rings," as armies mass for a final battle that will decide the fate of the world — and powerful, ancient forces of Light and Dark compete to determine the outcome— one member of the Fellowship of the Ring is revealed as the noble heir to the throne of the Kings of Men. Yet the sole hope for triumph over evil lies with a brave hobbit, Frodo, who, accompanied only by his loyal friend Sam and the hideous, wretched Gollum, ventures deep into the very dark heart of Mordor on his seemingly impossible quest to destroy the Ring of Power. This special one-night-only event will feature the remastered extended edition."

AMC The Americana at Brand 18, 322 Americana Way, Glendale, CA 91210
Tumblr media
This was my first time seeing a movie at this particular movie theater. I like the location because the Americana at Brand is such a pleasant outdoor shopping center with lots of shops and dining options. I decided to see JOKER 2 in IMAX. If you reserve your tickets online in advance, there’s a convenience fee. You can also purchase the tickets on site. There is a self-serve kiosk where you can purchase your ticket.
It looked very nice inside, with posters of upcoming movies in the lobby.
I arrived in the theater after the previews had begun and thought that I might have difficulty finding my assigned seat. The rows are clearly marked on the floor (and visible in the dark) as are the seat numbers.
The chair seemed new and clean. It was a fake black leather material, wide and comfortable. You can use the buttons to adjust how much it reclines. It has big cupholders and arm rests.
I couldn’t see the other people in the theater once I was sitting down. Everyone was either quiet and/or the sound system is so loud that I couldn’t hear anyone who was present.
This location has more than hot dogs, popcorn, candy, and drinks. They have a full bar called MacGuffins (alcohol) and snack bar with burgers, pizza, and the usual popcorn, candy, and drinks. They even have mobile ordering for food and drinks.
Validated parking is $5 for moviegoers (otherwise $5/first hour and $2 per hour after the first hour, some businesses validate)
The previews went on for 30 minutes (it seems like they’re constantly getting longer!). The sound was so loud that it felt like the chairs were vibrating but that’s not that unusual. Prices are 25% off before 4 PM. They also have an Insider rewards program. There must be 18 screens.
This theater is more expensive ($20.49 for matinee, $25.49 regular price, not including convenience fees), but it is nicer too.
4.5 out of 5 stars
