Oooh I love this so much. I do agree that they'd compliment each other well and be great sources of moral support. And you're right, Vicky would be SO jealous over this friendship because she's obsessed over both of these girls at various times and especially has always seen Rachel as the superior version of herself that she can never live up to. Rachel and Kate friendship!!

Okay so first off, spoilers for life is strange, if you haven’t finished the game or don’t want spoilers then just scroll past this post

So in my headcanon for these two, Rachel survived what happened to her in the dark room. I feel like Rachel would definitely start acting differently after this, but she wouldn’t do anything, because similar to Kate, she didn’t have any proof and she didn’t know what to do. Rachel wouldn’t know what exactly happened, but she would know that something happened to her. I don’t think that Kate and Rachel would become friends until Kate also ended up in the dark room. After Kates video ends up online, I believe that Rachel would try to reach out to her, first to comfort her because Rachel will not people bully this girl, but at some point she starts to connect with Kates story and she realizes that maybe they were in the same situation. Rachel would be by Kate’s side through all of this, even if others did not believe Kate. With the help of Max and Chloe, they would eventually take down Jefferson.

Besides how I think their friendship would start, I think that their friendship would work so well because they are so different. They would balance each other out very well. Kate could guide Rachel into the right direction sometimes and she could be a bit like a moral compass. Rachel could lead Kate out of her comfort zone and help her gain some more confidence. Rachel would also defend Kate with her whole life against those high school bullies. Kate and Rachel being close friends would piss Victoria off so much which I find funny. Honestly I just love the idea of a Victoria/Rachel/Chloe/Max/Kate friendship

amberprice, amberfield, amberpricefield? (the rare rachel/steph, the never-before-seen rachel/alex?)

So, I just want to preface this by saying I read this question hours ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since then. I'm sorry for the slow reply but this is a very good question because it was difficult for me to answer lol

A big part of why I like shipping characters is because they're a great way of exploring the characters involved in a ship via how different facets of them are exposed during their interactions with different people, and how various ships can thus result in differing avenues of growth for a character due to the influence of the other person(s) in that ship. To put it more succinctly, you're gonna see a very different side of Chloe in a story where she's dating Victoria versus one where she's dating Rachel, and I really enjoy exploring those different sides of a character. Rotating fictional characters like 3D models is fun!

To give the most comprehensive answer I can, I'm actually gonna have to give my general thoughts on the ships you've listed here and lead up to a more definitive answer. There's a lot of other Rachel ships I have thoughts on that you haven't mentioned, like Amberchase and Ambermarsh, but I'm leaving them out due to that.

Amberfield - Assuming you've spent any time on my AO3 profile, you know I'm big on Amberfield. Right away I can tell you this ship is not the most interesting to me, but it's up there: we never see Rachel and Max interact in canon, which I will forever think is a shame considering the William Lives alt!timeline exists, and thus I just enjoy extrapolating what their interactions would've been like.

Rachel and Max parallel each other in a lot of ways (model vs photographer, both occupy the same position in Chloe's life that they trade out, Victoria equal parts being jealous of/attracted to them, and of course how alt!timeline Max is implied to have essentially occupied a similar spot on the social totem pole to Rachel) whilst simultaneously having a lot of key differences that make me deeply interested in what a relationship of any kind between the two would be like. The dynamic in my head I always envision is Max being a kind of grounding force to Rachel, while Rachel is able to coax a more adventurous side of Max out in a similar way to Chloe.

But there's also so many ways it could go wrong, how they could clash, and I do intend to explore those in my writing at some point. Amberfield is fun to think about!

Amberprice - Strong contendor for most interesting, though we're not quite there yet, this is a ship that to me is all about how you interpret both Rachel and Chloe. I have read so many fics that envision different versions of Amberprice that could all conceivably fit into canon, and for that reason I find this ship incredibly interesting.

Chloe was important to Rachel, Rachel was important to Chloe, and Chloe loved Rachel, but we don't know the real specifics aside from the events of Before the Storm (if you choose to take them as canon, I have opinions about this). This ship has so much raw potential because of how nebulous and undefined it really is. You can write it so many different ways! I love them.

Amberpricefield - This is my pick for most interesting.

You combine the unknown variable of how Max and Rachel would be around each other, the natural friction that would arise from them both being such important figures to Chloe (assuming you're writing something canon-adjacent), the differing ways you can choose to interpret the Amberprice component, and the question of how the triad is formed. So many conceivable variations in their dynamic, in how the relationship is formed, how you interpret the individual characters, how they'd interact with each other, there's so much fun to be had and I just find them so interesting to think about.

There is a lot of untapped potential when it comes to writing Amberpricefield, in my opinion, because a majority of the fics I've read err to the fluffier side of things instead of exploring how messy this ship really could be due to all the moving parts. For example, you cannot tell me there wouldn't be ungodly amounts of friction between Rachel and Max initially due to Rachel knowing full well how badly Max leaving messed with Chloe and Max distrusting this person she knows nothing about who has taken her position.

Amberchen - It's funny you mention Rachel/Alex because I did write a bit of this a while ago, though nothing worth posting. I find this ship to be an extremely interesting one specifically because of Alex's powers: Rachel is a character who revolves around people-pleasing, masking, and all manner of social performance. Underneath it all, she doesn't really know herself. She fears that there isn't a real her.

"Do you think there's a point when you've been acting so much that you don't even have your own personality anymore? You're just whatever you think other people want you to be?" - Rachel in BTS Ep 2, I love this moment so much.

Alex's powers let her read other people's emotions, tap into their thoughts, and gives her an insight others lack. None of Rachel's tricks would work on her, so she would be forced to engage with Alex as a person. Alex can see what's underneath it all, what Rachel can't or won't acknowledge, and that would be equal parts liberating and terrifying for Rachel. It's so interesting to think about how Amberchen would come about and in turn what their dynamic would be like if Alex's powers were in play.

Amberrich - Steph/Rachel. I'm gonna be honest, this ship doesn't do much for me on paper? I like Steph, I like Rachel, and I've read some really good Amberrich, but I can't really say I find this as interesting as other Rachel ships.

I think what is interesting is the contrast between Steph's strong sense of identity and Rachel's aformentioned insecurity about who she really is, which is paired nicely with their shared difficulty with openly expressing their emotions. They have areas of overlap but contrast in some key ways, which is always fun, but Amberrich just doesn't really linger in my mind the same way other ships do.

“Lost in this Shakespearean act, photographer?” Rachel sits more deliberately and smiles, seemingly enjoying the situation.

Victoria glares at Rachel, her frustration only growing. This was supposed to be her moment, her time to shine behind the lens, but Rachel seems to be stealing the spotlight effortlessly.

amberchase or Beatrice/Lilith for the ship ask thing :0?

I'll do both:

Amberchase - tbh I don't really ship it. I don't really meaningfully ship Victoria with anyone but Taylor and that's because I think all the other girls are simply too good for her. I DO fully HC her as having a furiously repressed gay crush/psychosexual obsession with Rachel, but I don't think Rachel would ever go for it. Her type runs more towards tattooed stoner dirtbags, as well established

Beatrice/Lilith - I DO ship it, yes. Either as part of an ot3 with Ava, or just the two of them. Lilith and Beatrice are really interesting parallels in that they're both examples of what happens when a rich high-achieving Catholic girl from a suffocating family is given lethal combat training and told to serve a higher calling. They're both intensely driven to be as good as possible at everything they do, but Beatrice takes the "service" part to heart where Lilith gets stuck on power. Bea builds social bonds and takes on a massive sense of obligation to her sisters, Lilith positions everyone as competition, effectively isolating herself because she views anything less than possessing the Halo as a failure.

I think there's a lot of interesting potential in the fact that they're two of the longest serving OCS members we see (among the main cast and active in the field, at least). They clearly have a history, they're implied to be of similar socio-economic background, they were FRIENDS once, until they weren't. It's a dynamic I find really attractive - equally ripe for really fraught conflict and tenderness.

Let’s rank ‘ships!

This Tuesday (May 9, 2023) at 6:30pm ET, my partner and I will be doing a Life is Strange: Before the Storm ship tier ranking live stream! What does this mess of word soup mean? It means that we’ll be looking at a whole bunch of potential relationships between characters in Before the Storm and grading them on a scale from, basically, great to terrible.

Please note that, despite the premise of this stream, we do NOT condone bullying folks because of their preferred ships! Ship and let ship. This is all in good fun and basically just an excuse to talk about different relationship dynamics in Before the Storm.

We’re going to be running the gamut from very obvious ships (amberprice, anyone?) to rarepairs (Rose/Joyce/Sera, perhaps?). If you’ve got a ship you really want us to discuss, let me know before 2pm ET on Tuesday so I have time to add it to our tier list! (I hope that this goes without saying, but please keep any suggested ships age-appropriate: teens paired with teens, adults paired with adults.)
