For me, the Neil Gaiman “parasocial relationships are the problem” response reminds me of growing up Catholic. The CSA was always presented as “there are problems in every institution”, which is true but misses the unique problem that the Catholic Church uniquely enabled CSA on a systemic level.

I was raised with a really similar line of rhetoric in Mormonism (though less specifically about CSA), and yeah, it's definitely familiar from the Catholic side of my family as well. They're a traditionally police/military/priest family so it can be applied to a wide variety of terrible institutions as well! It's like:

You aren't failed by the institution, it is failed by bad actors who may have harmed you, but failed themselves and the faith/organization/whatever most of all! And have you considered that your expectations of the most basic decency from other human beings is an unrealistic weight to put on these already overburdened people? Don't idealize authority figures, even religious ones allegedly chosen by God—they're just men, after all, and putting people on pedestals doesn't serve anyone. (Etc.)

And I'm just ... sorry, expecting a public figure to not have a secret "serial rapist" life is not putting anyone on a fucking pedestal! People idealizing priests or artists or whomever is not why they're shocked and horrified and scolding them for it achieves absolutely nothing.

I think about Alien a lot, especially recently. This evening I’m specifically thinking about how in the Alien Isolation novel (and maybe other Alien novels) it mentions how Ripley would send video messages to Amanda before the freighter ship would lose contact, and how one of those times a message was from Dallas.

It made me think about the crew a lot. Like, did Amanda ever ask about them? Did any of them sometimes stop by while Ripley was talking to Amanda on the video message just to check in and say hi as another parental/family friend figure? Did Ripley ever tell the crew about her daughter? Did any of the other Nostromo Crew have kids?

Would Amanda have met the other crew member’s kids at some point in her childhood or teenage years and have no clue they were related to people who her mom worked with? If she did know them, would they have become a close friend group just trying to figure out what happened to their parents? Did the others try to stay optimistic that maybe their parents were okay? Did they give up on them after a few years?

I don’t know, but I think it’s interesting to ponder.

Chapter 12 excerpt

Eris could feel his flames licking up the back of his neck. This is for the best, he thought to himself. Alexius could find another distraction, and he wouldn’t be such a temptation, putting himself directly in Eris’ way. Eris could handle watching him move onto his next prey, and he would walk away and leave this mess behind him.

Of course, when the male leaned forward again, brushing his lips against Alexius’ ear, Eris wanted to burn the entire tavern to the ground. An angry, painful strain squeezed in his chest. He clenched his fists, and just as he felt sure he might actually lose it, Alexius patted the male on the shoulder and made a gesture towards the other side of the room. He walked away, giving a signal that seemed to communicate, “I’ll be back.” Eris watched as he headed towards the dark hallway that led to the washrooms, and Eris quickly stood up from his bench and weaved through the crowd.

Alexius was halfway down the hall when Eris made it to the entrance. The toilets were single occupant, and when he selected one to enter, Eris winnowed into the room just as Alexius shut the door behind him. When Alexius looked up and saw him, he only smiled, as if he had been expecting him.

is it strange to have an idea for a series, want to write it but at the same time not want to write it?

omg no not at all. i get that feeling more often than not haha! sometimes my brain just gets way ahead of me and plans this huge massive fic and/or series and i think of all the things i could include and the plot twists that could happen and everything else. but then i get overwhelmed by it all or i start second-guessing everything and tell myself nobody would like it and then i’ve psyched myself out.

so, short answer, no. it’s not strange, and i think a lot of other writers would agree lol

Strahm: I just. I see him having a very sorta 'classic' dog, like a retriever or something. And like I dunno if it'd be a full on doctor-approved emotional support animal, but it's definitely a deal where like. He just feels a lot of tension in his body leave when he's with this dog HRKGKGSK...

Hoffman: I'm so sorry if this one is especially surface level but like..... My brain is just only saying bulldog, and then immediately following that up with pets tend to look like their owners-
