How the Watermelon Became a Symbol of Palestinian Solidarity
The use of the watermelon as a Palestinian symbol is not new. It first emerged after the Six-day War in 1967, when Israel seized control of the West Bank and Gaza, and annexed East Jerusalem. At the time, the Israeli government made public displays of the Palestinian flag a criminal offense in Gaza and the West Bank.
To circumvent the ban, Palestinians began using the watermelon because, when cut open, the fruit bears the national colors of the Palestinian flag—red, black, white, and green.
The Israeli government didn't just crack down on the flag. Artist Sliman Mansour told The National in 2021 that Israeli officials in 1980 shut down an exhibition at 79 Gallery in Ramallah featuring his work and others, including Nabil Anani and Issam Badrl. “They told us that painting the Palestinian flag was forbidden, but also the colors were forbidden. So Issam said, ‘What if I were to make a flower of red, green, black and white?’, to which the officer replied angrily, ‘It will be confiscated. Even if you paint a watermelon, it will be confiscated,’” Mansour told the outlet.
Israel lifted the ban on the Palestinian flag in 1993, as part of the Oslo Accords, which entailed mutual recognition by Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization and were the first formal agreements to try to resolve the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The flag was accepted as representing the Palestinian Authority, which would administer Gaza and the West Bank.
In the wake of the accords, the New York Times nodded to the role of watermelon as a stand-in symbol during the flag ban. “In the Gaza Strip, where young men were once arrested for carrying sliced watermelons—thus displaying the red, black and green Palestinian colors—soldiers stand by, blasé, as processions march by waving the once-banned flag,” wrote Times journalist John Kifner.
In 2007, just after the Second Intifada, artist Khaled Hourani created The Story of the Watermelon for a book entitled Subjective Atlas of Palestine. In 2013, he isolated one print and named it The Colours of the Palestinian Flag, which has since been seen by people across the globe.
The use of the watermelon as a symbol resurged in 2021, following an Israeli court ruling that Palestinian families based in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem would be evicted from their homes to make way for settlers.
The watermelon symbol today:
In January, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir gave police the power to confiscate Palestinian flags. This was later followed by a June vote on a bill to ban people from displaying the flag at state-funded institutions, including universities. (The bill passed preliminary approval but the government later collapsed.)
In June, Zazim, an Arab-Israeli community organization, launched a campaign to protest against the ensuing arrests and confiscation of flags. Images of watermelons were plastered on to 16 taxis operating in Tel Aviv, with the accompanying text reading, “This is not a Palestinian flag.”
“Our message to the government is clear: we will always find a way to circumvent any absurd ban and we will not stop fighting for freedom of expression and democracy,” said Zazim director Raluca Ganea.
Amal Saad, a Palestinian from Haifa who worked on the Zazim campaign, told Al-Jazeera they had a clear message: “If you want to stop us, we’ll find another way to express ourselves.”

Help me and my family escape this raging war in order to survive.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I have been married to Amal Mahmoud for thirteen years, and we have four children: Sami, Mohammad, Sarah, and Saad. We are from Palestine, specifically the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for over eighteen years.
Tumblr media
Now, we no longer have a home, and my family lives in a refugee school in the Al-Zaytoun area of northern Gaza, while I live in a tent in Deir al-Balah. I haven't seen my children or my wife for over eight months.
My children and wife are suffering from continuous bombing, lack of resources to live in peace, and a shortage of food and water. Here, I am enduring severe psychological and physical pressures due to my inability to be with them and meet their needs.
Tumblr media
I ask anyone who reads my story to look upon us with compassion and help me raise even a small amount of money so that we can leave this country and find a safe place to live. We seek a country that offers us safety and a decent life, far from wars, genocide, and lack of security. We need shelter, food, water, education, and healthcare for me and my family.
Tumblr media
My previous account was verified by many people, but unfortunately, it was banned, and I had to create a new account. Please share my new account and help my family reach a larger audience for support and assistance.

Thank you

Note:27/7/2024:
I was sitting with my 4-year-old son, Saad, in a displacement school in Deir al-Balah when the school was targeted by four rockets. I was injured in my leg, while my son suffered injuries all over his body and, unfortunately, lost his sight later. During the attack, I lost my mobile phone and all the data on it. I created a new account on Tumblr and ask anyone who reads my story to help me share it.

also I'm working on a full reading list on Lebanese resistance and its historical context, but in the meantime this interview with Amal Saad covers all the basic points I want people to understand about Hizballah and its involvement in the current war:

[ 📹 Scenes from Al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, where children are treated after an Israeli airstrike targeted the Muammar family home in the Al-Nasr neighborhood on Friday, resulting in a number of casualties.]
🇮🇱⚔️🇵🇸 🚀🏘️💥🚑 🚨
ISRAELI SLAUGHTER OF PALESTINIANS CONTINUES ON DAY 175 OF GENOCIDE IN THE GAZA STRIP
On the 175th day of Israel's ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a total of 7 new massacres of Palestinian families, resulting in the deaths of 71 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounding another 112 others over the previous 24-hours.
As a result of another day and night of intense Zionist airstrikes and artillery shelling of residential structures, dozens of casualties were reported among Palestinian civilians, according to local sources.
At the same time, Israeli occupation forces launched several airstrikes targeting the Syrian city of Aleppo last night, along with the bombing of structures in the Damascus countryside, just outside the Syrian capital, resulting in dozens of casualties among Syrian civilians.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported the arrival of three martyrs targeted in an Israeli drone strike in the Wadi Gaza area, while also reporting the wounding of PRCS colleague, Ali Abu Harbeed, who sustained minor injuries after a Zionist airstrike targeted a residential home next to a building the crew member was sheltering inside near Jabalia, in the north of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, IOF warplanes bombed a residential home belonging to the Muammar family, south of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, killing 12 civilians and wounding a number of others.
Similarly, Zionist fighter jets bombarded the Saad bin Abi Waqas mosque in the Jabalia area, in the north of the Gaza Strip, martyring one woman and wounding several others.
At the same time, occupation air forces bombed several residential buildings near the Al-Wahda Tower, located in the Nasr neighborhood, west of Gaza City, as well as bombing neighborhoods in the Tal al-Hawa area, south of Gaza City, resulting in large numbers of casualties.
A group of civilians were also wounded after Zionist forces targeted them as they gathered south of the Al-Shati Refugee Camp in Gaza City, in the northern Gaza Strip.
Simultaneously, occupation aircraft bombarded several buildings in the Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp, in the central Gaza Strip, while occupation artillery forces shelled the same area. However, it is unknown at this time if or how many casualties resulted from the attack as the shelling continues.
Israeli occupation forces also bombarded new buildings in the City of Hope, also known as the City of Prisoners, south of Gaza City, with a total of 9 strikes targeting the area, causing a fire to break out.
Zionist air forces also bombed the residential home of the Musa family, located in the Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp, in central Gaza, killing 8 Palestinians and wounding several others. Among those killed in the airstrike were the husband, his wife, and his children, while several neighbors were injured by the explosion.
In the meantime, Israeli artillery detatchments repeatedly shelled several areas north of the Nuseirat and Al-Bureij Refugee Camps in central Gaza, while occupation gunboats opened fire on civilian homes along the beach in the central governate area.
Elsewhere, the Zionist occupation army launched several firebelts on various areas in the Khan Yunis governate, in the south of Gaza, destroying several residential homes, while at the same time, occupation forces layed siege to Nasser Hospital, where Zionist soldiers murdered a local nurse.
As the bombing and shelling renewed across central and southern Gaza, local paramedic crews recovered the bodies of three civilians who were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
Zionist forces also bombarded several residential structures near the Al-Amal Hotel, west of Gaza City, while the occupation army also continues ground operations in and around Al-Shifa Medical Complex.
According to Gaza's Media Office, it is confirmed that the Zionist occupation army executed at least 200 Palestinians during its operations at Al-Shifa Hospital, while also kidnapping and detaining over 1'000 citizens.
A series of explosions were also recorded resulting from the occupation army's bombing and shelling in northern Gaza.
IOF warplanes bombed the premises of the Al-Shujaiya Sports Club, located to the east of Gaza City, killing at least 10 civilians and wounding more than 30 others in "Israel's" latest war crime.
In yet another criminal strike, Zionist forces bombed the Gaza Industrial Zone, also east of Gaza City, martyring five civilians and wounding at least 20 others.
As a result of "Israel's" ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the endlessly rising death toll now exceeds 32'623 Palestinians martyred, upwards of 25'000 being among women and children, while another 75'092 civilians have been wounded since the start of the current round of Zionist aggression, beginning on October 7th, 2023.

Of course! Please help Iyed Sami, he is seperated from his wife, Amal Mahmoud, and his three kids, Mohammed, Sarah, Sami, and Saad. He needs the money to reunite with his family, whom he hasn't seen in at least eight months. They are only at CHF411 out of CHF20000, the currency is swiss francs and they are barely at 2% of their funds. Please donate and share!

By Amal Saad
U.S. airstrikes against 85 targets in Iraq and Syria on Friday and Houthi positions in Yemen on Saturday marked the “beginning, not the end of our response” to a drone attack late last month that killed three American troops in Jordan, national security advisor Jake Sullivan told NBC on Sunday. The top Biden Administration official also refused to rule out airstrikes on Iranian soil.
The retaliatory strikes are destined to fail, not least because the Biden Administration appears to not grasp an obvious fact: the various and mostly Shia militant groups that make up the Axis of Resistance are far from simply being Iranian proxies that operate at the whim of Iran’s diktat. As with most defensive alliances, each Axis member maintains a large margin of autonomy.

hello, yes of course! this is a verified gfm (vetted by @/90-ghost here) so please don't hesitate to share and give generously! Iyad and his family suffered tremendously in this war. he is now separated from his wife Amal and their four children Sami, Mohammad, Sarah, and Saad. unable to get to them or protect them. they just want to be able to live a normal life like everybody else. please have a part in not only this family's reunion but also their escape and evacuation because they cannot remain where they are now. as of right now, they have: CHF615 / CHF20,000
this is the conversion rate for swiss francs to dollars, they are not too far apart, but just in case anyone was confused :)
