What is an aluminum foil cloth, and where can it be used?
Tumblr media
Aluminum foil cloth has been used for decades for its insulation properties. It is an excellent alternative to traditional insulation materials like fibreglass, as it offers thermal protection at a fraction of the cost. Not only can aluminum foil cloth be used in the home, but it can also be used in other applications such as automotive, industrial, and agricultural settings. Let’s take a closer look at what aluminum foil cloth is and how it can be used.
What Is Aluminum Foil Cloth?
Aluminum foil cloth is made from thin aluminum sheets and other materials such as polyethylene or fibreglass. The combination helps to create a strong yet lightweight material that provides thermal protection and prevents condensation. Aluminum foil cloth has been tested and proven effective in temperatures ranging from -50°F to +260°F (-45°C to +127°C). This makes it an ideal choice for use in any environment — from home to the workplace.
Uses of Aluminum Foil Cloth
Aluminum foil can be used in many different settings and applications. For example, in homes, aluminum foil cloth can be used to insulate windows, doors, and walls from extreme temperatures or dampness. It also helps keep dust and debris from entering your living space. In automotive applications, aluminum foil cloth works well for soundproofing vehicles or keeping engine compartments cool during hot days. It can even be used in agricultural settings such as greenhouses or livestock confinement buildings, where it helps regulate temperature and minimize surface condensation buildup.
In industrial applications, aluminum foil cloth is often used for pipe wrapping and ductwork insulation since it helps prevent energy loss due to heat transfer. It’s also commonly found in construction projects where it protects against moisture damage or fire hazards caused by sparks or extreme temperatures.
What is a space blanket ( Foil Blanket ) made of in paramedics?
Space blankets are an essential tool for paramedics and EMTs, as they are lightweight and provide various benefits. But what exactly is a foil blanket made of, and why are these blankets so valuable for paramedicine?
What is a Foil Blanket Made Of?
Foil blankets are made from two layers of plastic film with a layer of aluminum foil sandwiched in between. The exterior layer is typically composed of polyethylene, while the interior layer comprises polyester. This combination creates a highly reflective surface that helps to retain body heat and prevent it from escaping into the atmosphere. As such, foil blankets help keep patients warm during medical emergencies or when they need stabilization before being transported to the hospital.
The Benefits of Foil Blankets in Paramedicine
Foil blankets offer several advantages over traditional wool or cotton blankets:
They’re much lighter than other types of coverings; this makes them easier to transport and store for quick access during an emergency.
Because the aluminum foil reflects heat towards the body rather than allowing it to escape into the environment, foil blankets can be used in colder climates without fear that the patient will become too hard due to their lack of insulation.
Since they don’t absorb moisture like traditional fabrics, they can be used as temporary covers for patients exposed to wet weather conditions or heavy precipitation.
Because they’re disposable after one use and inexpensive compared to most other thermal protection products today, foil blankets make great options for paramedic teams on a budget.
The Limitations of Foil Blankets
Although foil blankets have many advantages over traditional materials like wool or cotton, there are also some limitations that you should consider if you’re thinking about using them in your practice. For example, due to their lightweight and small size, they can only provide minimal protection against extreme temperatures.
If you’re treating someone who needs more substantial insulation from cold weather conditions or exposure to windy environments, then wool or cotton may be more suitable alternatives. Additionally, because aluminum doesn’t breathe as well as other materials such as wool or cotton, excess moisture could accumulate under a foil blanket, leading to skin irritation or even hypothermia if left unchecked lastly, since there’s no way to launder these disposable items after each use (they need to be replaced).
They may not be ideal if you need multiple uses out of one blanket due to budgetary constraints or limited storage space at your facility/clinic/practice site(s).
To summarise, Aluminum foil cloth is an incredibly versatile material that offers excellent thermal protection at a fraction of the cost of traditional insulation materials like fibreglass. Its light weight makes it easy to install, while its durability ensures that your insulation remains effective over time. So whether you are looking for an economical solution for your home improvement project or need an effective way to insulate large areas like warehouses or factories, aluminum foil cloth may be just what you need!

Relevance of sanctions against Russian aluminium
The European Union is considering a ban on primary aluminium imports as part of a new 15th package of sanctions against Russia, EU Reporter informs.
However, according to Chris Weafer, CEO of Macro-Advisory, such sanctions could significantly increase aluminium prices for European processors and consumers. Meanwhile, the restrictions will hardly put pressure on Russia.
The taxes that the aluminium industry contributes to the country’s budget are quite small. Moreover, Russia’s aluminium producer Rusal could redirect its exports to markets in China and Asia, Weafer said.
As previous trade restrictions against Russia showed, they often had unpleasant consequences for the EU itself. At the same time, real household incomes in Europe are declining due to inflation caused by the rejection of Russian raw materials. European refiners of oil, metals and polymers are forced to switch to more expensive raw materials, facing challenges.
Industrial production in the EU, heavily dependent on Russian energy, fell by 3.2 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2024. Production of chemicals, fertilisers, metals, cars and other goods also declined.
Double-edged sword
The sanctions policy proved ineffective. Russia’s GDP grew by 3.6 per cent in 2023 and continued to grow steadily, while major Russian companies refocused their sales on the domestic market and so-called “friendly” countries.
If sanctions are imposed, Russian aluminium will have to be replaced by more expensive and environmentally harmful products. As Macro Advisory notes, the carbon footprint of Russian primary aluminium is only 2.1 tonnes of CO2 compared to the global average of 15 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of this metal.
Last December, when the EU restricted imports of aluminium wire from Russia, the Federation of Aluminum Consumers in Europe (FACE) warned that a further extension of the ban on primary aluminium would have devastating consequences for European small businesses. It would lead to higher prices and job losses.

How tall can a brick building be before the bricks on the bottom are crushed by the weight
Tumblr media
For as long as mankind has been building structures, we've been using bricks. Bricks are one of the most versatile and widely-used construction materials in the world. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be used to create both functional and beautiful buildings. But how tall can a brick building be before the weight of the entire structure becomes too much for the bricks on the bottom to bear? Let's take a look.
Compressive Strength of Bricks
The short answer to this question is that it depends on the type of brick being used. Different types of bricks have different compressive strengths, which is the amount of force that can be applied to them before they crumble. For example, commonly fired clay bricks have a compressive strength of about 2,000 pounds per square inch (psi), while sand-lime bricks can have a compressive strength of up to 8,000 psi.
However, the compressive strength of a brick is only part of the equation. The other part is the weight of the bricks above it. So, even if a brick has high compressive strength, if there's enough weight bearing down on it from above, it will eventually crumble.
For example, let's say you have a brick with a compressive strength of 5,000 psi. If you put one pound of weight on that brick, it will be able to support 5,000 pounds without any problem. But if you put two pounds of weight on it, it will only be able to support 4,999 pounds before crushing under the pressure. And if you put three pounds of weight on it, it will only be able to support 4,998 pounds, and so on.
In other words, the higher the compressive strength of the brick, the taller you can build your building before the bricks at the bottom start to crush under the weight.
Conclusion: How Tall Can You Build?
So how tall can you build using standard-fired clay bricks? Well, according to engineers at Purdue University, "A column made from common fired clay bricks with a 23 mm [mortar] joint can safely support 397 kg/m2 [81 PSF], corresponding approximately to eight stories."  This means that a brick building eight stories tall should be able to support its own weight without any problems—assuming all other factors are equal.
Of course, there are other factors that come into play when determining how tall you can build a brick structure—such as wind loads, seismic activity, and soil conditions —but assuming those are all within acceptable limits, eight stories is typically the maximum height for a brick building. Anything taller than that starts getting into risky territory.  So next time you're admiring a tall brick building, remember that there's more to its stability than meets the eye!

Biden urges higher tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminium imports
US President Joe Biden called for a sharp increase in US tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminium imports on Wednesday, accusing China of exploiting state funds to subsidise Chinese firms to undermine American competition, according to Reuters.
Biden accused the Chinese government of “dumping,” an international trade policy in which the country exports products to international markets at uncompetitively low prices.
The prices are unfairly low because China’s steel companies don’t need to worry about making a profit because the Chinese government is subsidizing so heavily. They’re not competing. They’re cheating. And we’ve seen the damage here in America.
Biden was speaking to a group of steelworkers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

it's really wild that they still use so much wood for homebuilding in the USA. Is it a cartel thing? I can't imagine why you'd want to use a material that is so variable and flammable for home construction. Like yeah sure it's great in the pre-industrial era but now you can excavate and process gravel and cement and clay and iron and aluminium.
Wood isn't exactly cheap! Supply is variable and very sensitive to all sorts of weird things and it simply cannot correct very quickly. Steel is taken out of the ground and we make huge amounts of it, it's much more stable.
Maybe the amount of wood isn't that high? A fair amount of a house is gypsum board which you do actually dig out of the ground.
Still, I'm surprised that steel studs haven't completely outcompeted wood. Does it require more work to assemble? It might just be an industry momentum thing, you'd have to find builders who know how to work with metal framing, which presumably isn't a lot of people. You jump straight from wood framing and drywall to curtain walls on steel skyscraper frames.
There were some Construction Physics articles on this that I missed because I was busy hang on.
This article shows that the material and labour cost of framing are both the largest single costs within their own class, at 8% and 11% of the total cost of a home respectively, so it is expensive, and presumably that makes your homebuilding very sensitive to price spikes in wood.
This is from the last wood pricing spike and yeah, wood pricing can seriously affect the overall cost of a house, but it's also shockingly stable for a while there for being, you know, wood.
But yeah it feels like it's a significant fire hazard. It's not bulk lumber that can char without burning, it's all 2x4's and framing beams.
None of what I say is meaningfully correct.
