I think probably one of my worst customer stories has to be this: I work at a restaurant that's well known for having really good customer service right? We're located right off a busy intersection so we're normally packed full of people. I have one of my regulars bring one of her friends by I'm going to call Miss V. Miss V asks for a salad that normally comes with chicken nuggets on it and asks if she can get it with grilled strips instead. I reply back that well Miss V I'm sorry but we don't have grilled strips, we have regular chicken strips or I could get her a grilled fillet and have it cut up instead. And she gets sad but says she'll go with the strips and I'm like okay and ring her up with the salad with regular strips like she asked for.
I see one of my teenage coworkers coming back with a salad looking confused and I'm like what's up what's wrong with it thinking there was like a hair in it or it was made wrong. My coworker tells me oh this lady said that her salad was wrong I'm not sure- and I'm already sighing and going "is it Miss V?" And point to her and the coworker confirms and I see her motioning me over. So I'm like alright and I go over to her table like "So what's wrong with the salad? I thought you said you wanted strips." And Miss V insists once more that she wanted grilled strips not regular ones. And I'm just mentally sighing like okay clearly this lady thinks that I'm hiding this specific secret menu item from her and explain to her once more that we don't have grilled strips. She protests saying that she's had grilled strips the last time she came here because she ordered the salad with regular nuggets and they handed her the one with grilled strips by mistake and liked it better. She even pointed to my manager behind me and was like he replaced it for me but I want the one with grilled strips now.
So now I'm thoroughly confused like we don't sell grilled strips so idk what she means. I ask her if her strips came hot or cold thinking that maybe she just got handed one of the other salads that comes with cold grilled chicken and thought it was that but she says it was hot chicken. And then it dawns on me that it's probably the exact same hot grilled fillet cut up that I suggested to her in the first place. So I'm like we're going to replace it with the cut up grilled fillet will that work? And she goes "What's the difference"
By this point I'm starting to get a headache with her and I have a line of guests waiting for me back at front counter so I'm like it's how we have to ring it up. I explain to my coworker and manager how she wanted it fixed and rush back to my register to deal with the hoard of people that came by. I don't think about it for a while until I finish my line of people and I see her beckoning me over once more and I'm like lord what now.
She then explains to me that she'd now like her kids meal that she also bought with her meal but wanted later. (Something that we technically don't do for things besides ice cream but we can work around so long as either the person that took the order or who bagged the order remembers and we didn't have a shift change in the middle.) Mind you she asks for this like 3 hours later when the bagger has changed so I'm like sure okay I just need either your reciept or the sticker that printed off with your order to prove to bagging that you paid for it. And naturally she tells me that she doesn't have it because another coworker that was working dining room (I expressly want it to be known that we did have someone taking care of the dining room like I don't know why she keeps asking me for it since I'm on front counter and she can actively see I'm busy) threw it away with her trash because they didn't know. And I'm just sighing because now I have to dig through the trash to see if I can even find this piece of paper while I'm actively busy trying to do other stuff.
Thankfully her sticker from her salad was sitting at the top of the trash can and I could bring it to bagging and be like Miss V wants her kids meal now. The bagger looks at me confused at first because like I said we don't really do that but bags it anyways and hands it over.
Still to this day I have no idea how she managed to get her 'grilled strip' salad at all since that's a special order thing and those are clearly marked. Like it would have said hot grilled chicken on top and bagging usually has to hold for those. She's just going to have a rude awakening if she tries to come in on a day I'm not here and tries to do that because I'm probably one of the only non-managers that could understand what she meant and had enough patience for her to give me the runaround. The teenagers working night shift will just blink at her and say we can't do that at all. 😂

Hello, you have found my bookbinding blog!
and you may be wondering, what is this? So I have prepared a list of questions and answers that I think people may be wondering
Q: what's bookbinding?
A: bookbinding is the process of making a book! Starting with a piece of text, typesetting it, printing, folding the signatures, sewing them, gluing, trimming, and casing it in.
Q: do you sell your books?
A: Nope! Most of what I bind is fanfiction, and it would be ethically and legally complicated to find a way that it was OK to sell a fanfic binding, so I'm not gonna bother touching that. These books are either for me, or gifts. I strongly believe in the gift economy of fandom.
(the morals and legals around selling blank journals or public domain stuff is much simpler, but I'm not very interested in doing that either. Maybe if it was a cool and fun project)
Q: Who do you gift books to?
A: Close friends and family, primarily. I also often like to offer a book to the author, though whether or not they accept has been a tossup.
I also have participated in a few gift exchanges in the Renegade Bindery group.
Q: I'm an author you've approached. What would this offer entail?
A: Hi! I love your writing! I will need an adress to send the finished book to, and then I will mail it, and then you will have a book!
Q: how long do you take to send author copies?
A: It varies greatly. I've been trying something new lately called "asking the author if they want one AFTER I've finished the typeset, instead of when I put the book on the to-bind sometime eventually list", because then all that's left is to print and physically assemble the book, and thus the author is not additionally waiting the time until I start on that particular project.
But also I make books slowly, frequently with long pauses between the various stages, so again, it varies.

Q: why do you bookbind?
A: Several reasons. It started with the desire to have the Trust series (@alittleblogoftrust) on my bookshelf. (and thus starting the longest author's wait so far, as it was the first offer made and not yet fulfilled... Those books are going to be thick, and somehow that means they are an intimidating project and I have not made much progress on them) And then I discovered that the process of bookbinding is simply very fun! I like making books!
And there are so so many excellent stories that I can put on my bookshelf and read in book form.
Q: I'm interested in bookbinding. Where can I start? You mentioned a renegade group?
A: Renegade (@renegadeguild) is an excellent bookbinding collective. We have a big discord group full of folks interested in the art of bookbinding, and if you have any questions, someone there almost certainly has an answer.
For other resources, I really like DAS Bookbinding on youtube. He explains things in a calm, soothing manner, while demonstrating. He doesn't get into typesetting much, mostly focusing on physical construction.
He has a Getting Started playlist, though I think I actually started with his Case Bound Book playlist.

Dopamine is named for the emotional rollercoaster of her last several years, the peaks and valleys of a life she has mostly kept private. In 2020, Normani's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time after being in remission for 19 years. The following year, just when Andrea had finished chemotherapy, doctors found a lump in her father, Derrick's, prostate: He had cancer, too. Normani considers herself closer with her family than her friends. "I needed to be at home, with my family," she says. They both urged her to keep working on her album though, and not to defer a dream they'd all participated in since Normani was 3 years old.
Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in 1996 to a mother who was a flight attendant and a father who was a union official. The family moved from Atlanta to New Orleans in 1999, and whenever her parents were away for work, her grandmother, Barbara, would take care of her. She was 3 when she fell in love with musicals. She remembers watching John Huston's 1982 film, Annie, and turning to look at her mother, saying, "Mom, I want to do that, I want to be in the TV." Her parents took her seriously and enrolled her in dance classes; it was Barbara who paid for them and sewed all of her costumes. By the time she was 8, she'd grown fond of the dance-focused music videos she'd see on BET's 106 & Park and would do the choreography for Destiny's Child tracks with her friends at birthday parties. (They were partial to "Soldier" and "Cater 2 U.") Ordinarily, Normani was shy and quiet. But when she performed, she would become someone else.

When they snuck back into the city to recover some of their belongings, her parents found the neighbor's shed in their pool. Their family photos were all destroyed. They took what they could, left behind the pet turtles, and decided to start over in Texas. "We were in the car," recalls Normani, "and my mom asked, 'Do you want to go to Dallas to see your godmother? Or to Houston? I hear Beyoncé is from there.'" She laughs. "That was the deciding factor." In Houston, they stayed in a hotel for four months, deleting their savings and stretching their food. Normani, who was entering the sixth grade, struggled to adjust in school before deciding to be homeschooled. This gave her the space to commit more fully to dance, gymnastics, and singing. Fifth Harmony became one of the most commercially successful girl groups of all time over a span of six years, selling 33 million records. For Normani, the group was a blessing that also traumatized her. She refers to her "time in the group" like a prison sentence ordered and duly served. But she says she was grateful for her ability to hide. "I didn't want to be at the forefront," she says. "It wasn't until later that I started feeling like a token."

When Normani came out with her single Wild Side, it was nocturnal and assertive, but with a hint of playfulness. Normani believed in the song enough to fund the music video herself, which cost upwards of $1 million; it's a psychedelic, gravity-defying montage of leopard print, crushed velvet, and acres of glistening skin that sees the singer phasing through cielings, doing the splits in full leather, and dancing with a doppelganger like the closing scene from Annihilation.
"My mom says she wants a tattoo," Normani shares with a flutter of laughter. "It's funny because growing up, she was always like, 'It's not worth it to get your bellybutton pierced or to have tattoos. Your body is a temple.'" Normani has two: the bootlike outline of Lousiana on her right ankle, and the phrase "God's Daughter" in script on her clavicle. Both were impulsive decisions. "Because I think so much and I'm so intentional when it comes to music-related things, or anything to do with my career, when it's something outside of that, I allow myself to move before I can second-guess myself," she says.

Well there's also something - nevermind) nor post on sites with images that appear with ten levels of overexposure and all colors pale as an ass that hasn't seen the sun for 20 years on this fucking Hewlett Packard.
Artists working on Microsoft, if you have this problem and you keep these shitty comps, YOU have a problem. This is valid for galerists, museum staffs, art journalists, etc. Gates has created a sick world which is clearly NOT for us, in spite of his permanent "philanthropic" declarations - and this will take you to one of my last French texts about another "huge philanthrope". This computer stuff is literally unbearable as it's available - not available - I understand myself and the interested too. What is the panorama of my websites ?
-Instagram : Has been unavailable because of a technical problem since November 2 021. 500 followers lost, you know, when someone is not here anymore even if somewhere else, people act like that. before i can start even thinking about my dress for Lady Stede, i need to consider the four base layers i need to support it:
1: Shift
my plan is to go quick and a little dirty here- just a bog standard basic shift pattern with a drawstring at the neck. its not inaccurate for the era, but i really am not abiding by any specific history here. i dont do enough costuming to have more than one shift, so i want something that will work with as many different pieces as possible, and the drawstring will hopefully allow that. i have some linen i bought with the intent of making a shift or shirt a little while back, so its finally time to use it up!
2: Stays
i already own redthreaded's 1750s stays pattern, so im going to employ that here! its going to be a perfect time period for the dress im making, and im already enamoured with the style as it is. i actually bought the pattern with the intent of making a fashion set of stays using a cotton print i got for pennies that reminded me of those gorgeous blue and white print designs. i think that plan fits stede without need to change anything, so i just get to move that project up the list! i think my only adjustments are that ill make sure i pay attention to the histori silhouette when fitting a bit more. im not quite sure what im. going to be using for my strength layer yet, i wont have enough coutil without buying more, and so i was considering trying a more historical option if i have to make a purchase anyway.

3: Pocket Hoops
theres probably a good argument to be made that a full pannier would be a more appropriate undergarment for a lady stede costume, especially with my influences... however. i have to get this into a suitcase, so it absolutely has to be pocket hoops. ill tell myself that thats Stede's idea of toning it down on the boat, of practicality. ive stared at a lot of images of pocket hoops in this process already, and i think ive determined the key factor in making a pair i would like: the top length. pocket hoops where the length between the top hoop and the waist is too short pull at a weird angle i hate, and ones where its too long go saggy and lose the dramatic shape of the skirt. it seems to be a very easy thing to get wrong because ive seen a lot of ones that just dont look right to me. the rest of the pocket hoop is easy as pie. ive got a couple patterns in books i own already, and ive decided to go with the enclosed style, for storage potential. the rest of the pattern ill fiddle with until its giving me the shape i really want. i dont have any hooping wire or cane, and i dont want to buy in bulk (which is the way all my usual haunts sell it) so im going on a fun trip to the hardware store to see if i can find a boning alternative!
4: Under-Petticoat
ive seen two main styles of this, the one thats a base skirt designed to go under the pocket hoops, and the one that is essentially the same as the petticoat you see, two halves that tie front and back and go over the hoops. im yet to decide which style im going with for certain, though im leaning towards the second style because for my purposes, i cant see how the first really helps? ill have a shift that long anyway and its away from the top surfaces, so it seems obsolete to me. doing it the other way will also give me chance to practice for my outer petticoat, too. but i think i still have a lot of research to do on this particular element before making a final decision. i know im going to use a random cotton i have around though, probably old bedsheets or something of the like. something breezy and light but inexpensive and not precious yardage.
looks like im going to have a busy winter!

diy handmade wardrobe
You may remember, or not, it was a while ago, that I mentioned I don't really wear a lot of the clothes I've sewed for myself. Excepting the cosplay garments which are not everyday wearable pieces unless they were closet cosplay pieces with no or minor alterations, I really only wear my pajama pants and altered t-shirts multiple times.
I have worn a few handmade lolita dresses once or twice after the first time I wore them, but definitely not frequently like pajama pants and t-shirts. Firstly, I don't really wear dresses or skirts on an every day basis in my entire adult life, not even much as a kid. While I do commute to the office once in a while and could wear lolita there since I have a desk job, I mostly wear business casual with jeans/slacks and the occasional j-fashion blouse or cardigan (skirts have to be midi-length or longer and those are not very convenient for a short person to wear). I rarely go out on the weekends due to pandemic and lazy, so I would just run errands and dresses are not conducive to errands. So even if I did sew the cutest, most comfortable casual j-fashion dress, I would wear it maybe a few times in my entire lifetime. In the end, it's not worth the time and money invested into making it.

The next obvious pivot would be to recreate the pieces that I do wear often, buuuuuutttt those are impossible for a home sewist to recreate. How do I sew jeans on my Hello Kitty sewing machine? I can't, the machine is much too small and weak to handle denim or even regular bottom-weight fabric. I don't have a serger so sewing knits like tops or casual athleisure would be a pain and look sloppy and would fall apart in the wash.
Okay, so the next obvious pivot after that is buy an industrial strength machine to sew denim and pants and a serger to work with knits. That would cost about... $2000 for medium quality machines. Maybe more with inflation. So I would have to make $2000 worth of clothes, or 100 hours of sewing (generously) just to break even. I'd have to sew every weekend for 6 months. Not counting the cost of fabric.
Which is the next issue. You can't really buy comfortable cottons or semi-natural fashion fabrics at the craft store chains anymore, it's mostly quilting cottons and synthetics and canvas. I am lucky to live near a big city with a fashion district so I could go there if I really want to for a variety of wearable fabrics that my skin would not reject the feeling of. That would not be cheap (well, idk, I haven't been to the fashion district in decades but judging from online prices, the stuff on clearance is on clearance for a reason) and I doubt I'll get the exact prints or colors I want even at full price. Thrifting bed sheets (aka the most comfortable cotton you can get cheaply) is.... probably not what I want to sell to others...
With all of these barriers, I have not been able to accomplish my goal in 2022/2023 of sewing handmade j-fashion inspired pieces for both myself or my etsy shop which was named "atelier" but doesn't sell clothes, and used to only have jewelry. My day-job also prevents me working on stuff lol, but as one of my goals was to retire early, I kinda want a head start on my atelier just in case I need to. I hopefully will have saved enough money to retire that I don't need to desperately work on a side hustle, but I like having back up plans. And also, I feel guilty not having any clothes in an "atelier" lol.
Because I'm lazy and don't want to do real business which is the downfall of society, my ideal plan would be to sew a few big/medium pieces, then a handful of coordinating or thematic small pieces, including doll clothes, and also some artwork or whatever, then release 2 or 3 times a year like how actual fashion companies do for the seasons. But with the resources I have, I just can't think of anything I can sew that would be good/sturdy enough to sell for price that equals the amount of time I put into sewing, and that anyone else would buy when they can get it cheaper elsewhere.
So my final idea is to either create very trendy items that I am fairly taobao companies will not make very well, or that American patrons would prefer to buy from a small artist in their country instead, or make fandom inspired items but fashionable like Super Groupies style. I think this is the way to go for me, tbh, that way I know I have made something unique and that I will enjoy making even if it never sells, so I would wear it myself lol. I did make jewelry in this style 2 years ago and jotted several notes of what to sew/craft for my shop in the meantime, but as mentioned before, the few items I made was not to the level of quality to be sellable (even though I personally love them and they're sturdy enough for my use of course) and I doubt I could do much better. But I have to work on leveling up my skills now or I will be too arthritic and blind later, so I have no choice but figure out something asap.
If anyone else has ideas other than buying new machines which probably I need to do anyway, let me know! Again, I'm not interested in making a profit, I'm not a capitalist nor scum of the earth, I am already a doctor, but I do want to be compensated fairly as an artist yet make good quality value-priced items attainable for everyone in these tough economic times. That's not easy, but I still want to try this year.
Anyway... back to more pajama pants for me.

oh my god okay i feel like this is everything
okay so first of all: jack doesn't mean to become an 'influencer'. technically, he doesn't even think he qualifies as one; he's not influencing anything, not backing any products or doing any ads. literally all he is is Some Guy that decided "hey, maybe instagram is a good place to keep a catalog of all of my artwork."
so, he invests in a decent camera, learns how to take photos that aren't shaky from his phone, and starts taking professional photos of traditional pieces. he eventually learns how to do timelapses too, which he really enjoys. he doesn't really get a lot of traction at first, but then he posts some joke fanart of a popular fictional character he likes and suddenly he's getting so many fans following him.
he still posts more "serious" artwork, but after the attention, he just,, starts letting himself be free. he posts doodle sheets from his sketchbooks. weird sticky notes he can’t bear to part with. he posts fanart, for a lot of different things he likes, and he’s not like,, into fandom but he inadvertently caters to that crowd.
its a mix of traditional paintings, sketches, doodles, digital paintings, pose studies, abstract work, charcoals and oil pastels and colored pencils. it’s like,, yknow how ikimaru and viria are huge in fandom spaces? or loisvb on instagram? gabriel picolo? he basically does that in terms of growing a fan base. after things start catching on, he’s sitting at 250k, 500k, 900k followers- fucking crazy if you ask him, because he’s genuinely just trying to have fun, and people like it.
it definitely started as an outlet, too; if you scroll far enough on his account, you’ll see vent art, more personal pieces, and it’s so wild to see how much he’s 1) grown as an artist and 2) grown happier, all by what’s represented in those artworks.
he opens an online shop. sells prints, stickers, certain pieces on things like mugs and hoodies, and it basically becomes his full time job. sure, sometimes it’s hard, and he gets a lot of attention and a lot of pressure and artblock is a bitch but this is all he’s ever wanted so !! hell yeah !!
also, wouldnt it be cute if davey and jack met because davey needed an illustrator to make a graphic copy of his novel? that’s definitely something that jack has always wanted to do, and he works fairly closely to davey to make sure his interpretation matches davey’s original ideas, and they just ,, get closer and closer. their agents handle Professional stuff but they regularly meet for coffee and coffee turns into dates and eventually, jack’s name on later books in davey’s graphic novel collection is Jack Kelly-Jacobs.

Art Career Tips, 2021 Edition
Here’s an edited version of my 2019 answered ask, because... this feels relevant. 
It is a problem of capitalism that folks equate their income as a judgement of their value as people; and let me preface. You are worth so much. You have inherent value in this world. Your income is not a judgement on who you are (plenty of billionaires are actively making the world worse). LARPing self-confidence will go a long way to helping you get paid more for your work, because clients will believe that you know what you are doing, and are a professional. 
& real quick—my own background is that I’ve been living off my art since 2018. I went to art school (Pratt Institute). I work in a publishing/educational materials sphere, and a quarter of my income is my shop. Not all of this information may apply to you, so it is up to you to look through everything with a critical eye, and spot pick what is relevant. 
So there are multiple ways of getting income as an artist; 
Working freelance or full-time on projects
Selling your stuff on a shop
Licensing (charging other companies to use your designs)
This post primarily covers the freelance part; if you’re interested in the other bits there is absolutely info out there on the internet. 
IF you are just starting (skip to next section if not applicable) dream big, draw often (practice helps you get better/more efficient), do your best to take "a bad piece” lightly. You’re gonna RNG this shit. At some point your rate of “good” works will get higher. Watch tutorial videos & read books. A base understanding of “the rules”; anatomy, perspective, composition, color helps you know what the rules are to break them. This adds sophistication to your work. One way you can learn this stuff is by doing “studies”—you’re picking apart things from life, or things other people have done, to see what works, and how it works. 
Trying to turn your interests into a viable career means that you are now a SMALL BUSINESS; it really helps to learn some basic marketing, graphic design, figure out how to write polite customer service emails; etc. You can learn some of this by looking it up, or taking skillshare (not sponsored) classes by qualified folks. Eventually some people may get agents to take care of this for them—however, I do recommend y’all get a basic understanding of what it takes to do it on your own, just so you can know if your agent is doing a good job. 
Making sure your portfolio fits the work you want to get
Here is a beginner portfolio post. 
Research the field you’d like to get into. The amount people work, the time commitment, the process of making the thing, the companies & people who work for them. 
Create work that could fit in to the industry you’re breaking into. For example, if you want to do book cover illustration, you draw a bunch of mockup book covers, that can either be stuff you make up, or redesigns of existing books. If you’re not 100% sure what sort of work is needed for the industry, loop back into the portfolios of artists in a similar line of work as whatever you’re interested in, and analyze the things they have in common. If something looks to be a common project (like a sequence of action images for storyboard artists), then it’s probably something useful for the job. 
CLIENTS HIRE BASED ON HOW WELL THEY THINK YOUR WORK FITS WHAT THEY WANT. If they’re hiring for picture books, they’re gonna want to see picture book art in your portfolio, otherwise they may not want to risk hiring you. Doesn’t have to be 100% the project, but stuff similar enough. If you aren’t hired, it doesn’t mean your work is bad, it just wasn’t the right fit for that specific client. 
If you have many interests, make a different section of your portfolio for each!
Making sure you’re relevant 
Have a social media that’s a little more public-facing, and follow people in the career field you’re interested in. Fellow artists, art directors, editors, social media managers; whoever. Post on your own schedule. 
Interact with their posts every so often, in a non-creepy way. 
If you’ve made any contacts, great! Email these artists, art directors, editors, former professors, etc occasional updates on your work to stay in touch AND make sure that they think about you every so often.
Show up to general art events every once in a while! If you keep showing up to ones in your area (when... not dying from a sneeze is a thing), folks will eventually start to remember you. 
Industry events & conferences can be pricey, so attend/save up for what makes sense for you. Industry meetups are important for networking in person! In addition to meeting people with hiring power, you also connect with your peers in the community. Always bring a portfolio & hand out business cards like candy. 
Active job hunting
Apply to job postings online.
If interested in working with specific people at specific companies, you could send an email “I’d love to work with you, here’s my portfolio/relevant experience”, even if they aren’t actively looking for new hires. Be concise, and include a link to your work AND attached images so the person reading the email can get a quick preview before clicking for more. 
Twitter job postings can be pretty underpaid! Get a copy of the Graphic Artists’ Guild Handbook Pricing & Ethical Guidelines to know your rate. I once had a twitter post job listing email me back saying that other illustrators were charging less, and I quote, “primarily because they’re less experienced and looking for their first commission”. This was not okay! For reference, this was a 64-illustration book. The industry rate of a children’s book (~36 pages) is $10k+, and this company’s budget was apparently $1k. For all of it. 
Congrats you got a job! Now what?
Ask for like, 10% more than they initially offer and see if they say yes. If they do, great! If not, and the price is still OK, great! Often company budgets are slightly higher than they first tell you, and if you get this extra secret money, all the better for you. 
Make sure you sign a contract and the terms aren’t terrible (re: GO GET THE  Graphic Artists’ Guild Handbook Pricing & Ethical Guidelines) 
Be pleasant and easy to work with (Think ‘do no harm but take no shit’)
Communicate with them as much as needed! If something’s going to be late, tell them as soon as you know so they aren’t left wondering or worse, reaching out to ask what’s up. 
And if all goes well, they’ll contact you about more jobs down the line, or refer you to other folks who may need an artist, etc. 
Quick note about online shops/licensing and why they’re so good
It’s work that you do once, that you continuously make money off of. Different products do well in different situations (conventions vs. online, and then further, based on how you market/the specific groups you are marketing to), so products that may not do well initially may get a surge later on. 
Start with things that have low minimum order quantity and are relatively cheap to produce, like prints and stickers. 
If you are not breaking even, go back to some of the earlier portions of this and think about how you could tweak things as a small business. Ease of access is also very important with this; for example, if you only take orders through direct messages, that immediately shuts off all customers who don’t like talking to strangers. 
Quick resource that you could look through; it’s the spreadsheet of project organizing that I made a while back 
Licensing is when people pay you for the right to use your work on stuff they need to make, like textbooks or greeting cards. This is generally work you’ve already made that they are paying the right to use for a specified time or limited run of products. This is great because you’ve already done the work. I am not the expert on this. Go find someone else’s info.
“I am not physically capable of working much”/ “I need to pay the bills”
Guess who got a hand injury Sept 2020 that messed me up that entire month! I had a couple jobs going at the time that I was terrified of losing, but they were quite understanding when I told them I needed to heal. So:  Express your needs as early as you know you need them. Also do lots of stretches and rest your hands whenever you feel anything off; this will save your health later. Like, the potential of a couple months of no income was preferable over losing use of my hands for the rest of my life.
This continues to apply if you have any other life situation. Ask for extra time. Ask for clarification. If you tell people ahead of time, folks are often quite understanding. Know how much you are capable of working and do your best not to overdo it. (I am.. bad at this)
Do what MAKES SENSE for your situation. If doing art currently earns you less money than organizing spreadsheets, then do that for now, and whenever you have the energy, break down some of the tips above into actionable tiny chunks, and slowly work at em. 
The original ask I got in 2019 mentioned ‘knowing you’re not good enough yet’. Most artists experience imposter syndrome & self-doubt—the important thing is to do your best, and if anything, attempt to channel the confidence of a mediocre white man. If he can apply to this job/charge hella money for Not Much, then so can you!

This is basically just going to be a bunch of resources I have found to be useful. I can’t say that I’ve used all of them, but I’m sure they’re all worth checking out.
I’m also gonna try to put a detailed description for most of the links so you have a better idea of what you’re getting. I apologize in advance if some of them are redundant lol

Akihito Yoshitomi -- Yoshitomi is a mangaka who has tutorials on manga making. He also has an insightful series in which he drafts and draws a 30-page manga in 18 days. Remember that every artist works differently and his process may be different from another’s.
Drawfee -- Drawfee is an improv drawing show of four artists: Nathan Yaffe, Jacob Andrews, Julia Lepetit, and Karina Farek. While they don’t have tutorials in a sense, their videos explain the different processes they go through as they draw. They also occasionally provide tips, tricks, and resources in their videos. They do have another channel and a Twitch channel where they host drawing classes in addition to other fun shenanigans.
EtheringtonBrothers -- Has a bunch of useful and eye-catching tutorials called “How to Think When You Draw”.
Mark Crilley -- Mark is a comic artist, specializing in manga, who has a bunch of tutorials about anatomy, perspective, comic making, and other things.
Miyuli -- Miyuli is an artist who posts tutorials on their Twitter. Their tutorials range from anatomy to clothing to other things. They even have a few books of art tips. Currently (as of the time of posting this), their 2018 version is free for download, so I highly recommend you download that. Some tips may be outdated, but they should still be helpful.
Whyt Manga (Twitter/YouTube) -- Odunze is a comic artist, specializing in manga, that has a bunch of tutorials on manga making and drawing characters of color.

Blender -- A free 3D program if you’re into 3D modeling and such. I also personally haven’t used Blender (I use Maya lol), but I know it’s a respectable program.
Krita -- A free painting program if you can’t afford Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint. I personally haven’t used Krita, but I have recommended it to a few friends and they have positive reviews about it.
Paint Tool SAI -- Okay, this one isn’t free, but it’s a significantly cheaper painting program where you don’t have to pay a subscription. It’s 5,500JPY (~50 USD). I’m not sure how well it still works on modern computers (the last update was 2016), but I still use it here and there because I love the pen tool feature it has, and it still works like a charm for me.
~General Tips From Raine~
Raine admits that she’s guilty of not following her own advice, but Raine hopes that the tips that she does know will be beneficial to someone who will follow them. She’s also going to keep all her tips under the cut so as to not make this post a huge wall of text (even though it technically already is lol)
Also, if you have some resources, tutorials, tips yourself, please feel free to send them to me and maybe I’ll make a part 2 to this post!
ALWAYS LOOK FOR REFERENCE. This should really go without saying. You can’t draw from life if you refuse to observe life itself.
If you can’t find the exact thing you need, MAKE YOUR OWN REFERENCE. Time and time again, I can’t find something exactly that I need. So instead, what I do is that I take pictures of my own reference. Sometimes I even grab a friend and take pictures of them doing whatever it is I need.
Have a mirror handy when you’re drawing. Sometimes what you need is actually right there in front of you.
Having trouble drawing something? Do some studies. Take the time to understand what it is you’re drawing. I can’t remember the exact story, but I heard that the people who were working on Tarzan were having a hard time drawing his hands. So, what they did was spend a few hours looking at hands to try and understand how they work.
IT’S OKAY TO STUDY THE ART OF OTHER ARTISTS. Just as we look to the old masters as a reference, it’s definitely okay to look at modern-day artists for reference. Just don’t go copying exactly everything that they do, or worse, trace what they do. Just don’t do it... at all.
Not every line needs to be realized. The viewer of your work will automatically connect the dots.
DO NOT TRASH YOUR OLD DRAWINGS. Please, never ever do this. Your old drawings have value to them, even if they look terrible to you. Old drawings may hold ideas for things you could do for the future. They also serve as a way to see how far you’ve come as an artist.
GETTING BETTER AT DRAWING TAKES TIME AND EFFORT. You’re not gonna get better overnight. It’ll take months, or even years, to feel like you’re a competent artist, and even then, you’ll still have room for improvement.
DON’T LOOK DOWN ON YOURSELF IF YOU’RE TAKING A LONG TIME TO GET BETTER. It’ll be better for your mental health in the long run.
Alternatively, DON'T LOOK DOWN ON OTHER ARTISTS EITHER, ESPECIALLY TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER. You know the struggles it took for you to get where you are, so don’t go putting down other people when you’ve been in their shoes once.
KEEP DRAWING. If you’re not making an effort to get better, then you’re not going to be better. I get that it’s hard to find the inspiration to draw (I’m very guilty of this), but just keep trying. It doesn’t have to be big or spectacular. You don’t even have to post it if you’re the type who likes to post their art stuff.
Try to find references from real-life. It’ll help you better understand form, lighting, shadows, etc., especially if you’re going for a more realistic kind of art style. Otherwise, finding reference from things like cartoons, anime, comics, etc. are just as good.
Try new things. Try new art mediums. Try a different art style. Switch up the way you do things. Maybe you’ll hate it, maybe you’ll like it. Who knows if you don’t try.
Watch time-lapses (or speed draws/speed paints) of other artists!
Pinterest and Google are your friends if you need tutorials or references or whatever.
If you’re offering commissions, DO NOT WORK UNDER YOUR LOCAL MINIMUM WAGE. You are literally devaluing the work you actually put into a piece.
I like to think I’m an aficionado of Photoshop, so feel free to ask me questions on how to achieve something! I’ve used Photoshop for about 11 years now and know my way around the program. On another note, I do recommend setting custom keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop because the default shortcuts are terrible (in my opinion), and because having custom shortcuts increases the speed of your workflow.
Because I’ve been seeing this a lot lately in Twitter, you’re never too old to start in art. Art is just one of those things that anyone can pick up at any age because the only thing you really need to get good in art is time, diligence, and patience.
Try not to post hi-res images of your artwork to prevent art stealers from selling your artwork in high resolution.
Always, always, always add your signature and watermark on your artwork. I like to add my signatures and watermarks in places that’ll be hard to erase or crop out. I’ve also seen people add their signatures and watermarks in creative ways (ex. on a character’s shirt). You need to protect your work in an era where people will just blatantly steal it and make profit off your work.

How It's Going So Far
We have visitors coming in for the funeral next weekend, so this week has been devoted to freeing up the guest room. This means not only moving out of the room I have been living in for the past eight months, but cleaning out enough of the master bedroom that it seems a little less like "MIL's room that we are camping out in" and more like "our actual bedroom in our actual home now." We haven't got the time or mental or physical energy to move around the furniture much or do a lot of redecorating, but we've been able to get some stuff taken care of.
Moving my clothes in was a very big thing. I have been living out of a suitcase, a cardboard box, and a completely disorganized pile on a chair for so long that I'd almost just gotten used to how uncomfortable it is to never know where any of your clothes are or what is clean. Now I have six drawers and ample closet space, my things are clean and put away, and some part of my psyche that I didn't know was clenched has finally relaxed. It feels pretty good! Of course in order to get there I have had to deal with a huge quantity of MIL's things, either disposing, packing for donation or preparing to sell.
MIL had great taste in everything except movies and television, and her closet was full of high-quality clothes that she kept in really nice shape, some of it barely worn. (She also liked shopping very much and she and I did quite a bit of it this past year!) There's a nice consignment store in town but they only take ten pieces of clothing, ten accessories, ten bits of jewelry and ten household items per person per week. Anything that they don't want to sell they give back, but it still counts against your total. This has led to the somewhat weird feeling of trying to get a good grade in Consigning, something that is normal to want and possible to achieve. So far I have done pretty well, with very few things rejected. I've devoted an entire corner of the closet to stuff that is still waiting for consignment, and at this rate I will be done sometime in the year 2525.
All the stuff that is not consignable, either because it's a little more worn out or it is stuff like pajamas, socks, blankets, etc, I have been putting into bags for donation. So far I have five white trash bags full, which I am keeping a close eye on to ensure they don't go out with the garbage by accident. There's a thrift store attached to a DV shelter a couple towns over, and I think I'll probably take this stuff over there. A lot of it is good enough to use, even if nobody's going to pay 14 dollars a pop for it at consignment, and hopefully the clients can use some of the items, with the rest of it getting sold to fund operations. It's a good cause! Other stuff I am putting in boxes and tucking away. In the spring, I'm going to have one hell of a garage sale.
One week now until the funeral, so my attention is turning that way (while still trying to juggle all these finances, utilities, taxes, DMV etc in the meantime). We've got a pianist and a vocalist lined up, so I just need to get the order of services finalized, publish the obituary, order the catering, buy all the servingware and beverage stuff, print out all the pictures and make the photo boards. My parents are coming on Tuesday, thank God, and are going to take some of the load off me. Throw in doctor's appointments, lawyer appointments, retitling the vehicles, getting somebody to fix the dry rot in the garage and maybe at some point actually moving our things out of the garage, and it's still going to be pretty busy here for the next little bit. But at least it's starting to feel more normal, less like I'm a marble rattling around in a cup that isn't mine. The sadness hits at funny times and I think the funeral itself will be rough, but we're settling in.

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!
I  finished my capstone piece last night at 2AM for my BFA project--
This was the last piece of my 12-piece portfolio I’ve been working on for the past year for university graduation! The next step for me is to work on new pages for Chapter 1, and on May 6th I will officially graduate with a bachelors in illustration!! This has been a long time coming and I’m so excited! 
A few specific things that will be relevant in regards to Apocalypsis:
The STYLE of the comic is going to change!
I went absolutely all out on colors, shading, etc. for the prologue pages due to the fact that they were pieces for my BFA portfolio. From here on out, starting with the first page of Chapter 1, I will be using a simpler style so that I can make pages faster!! This will be most evident in the shading, but I may also simplify backgrounds a bit more, and the style will likely fluctuate while I try to nail down a workflow that allows me to make pages at a decent pace while still keeping a quality I can be proud of. This will NOT affect how I line my characters, or my actual “style” of drawing. Hopefully you all will enjoy it, and I’m still going to do my best, it just won’t be all-out 1000% for every single panel from here on! 
I will still do my absolute best work for Chapter covers, posters, prints, etc
At some point in the semi-near future, I will open a patreon!
I say “semi-near” and am picturing the next two or three months! Obviously after I graduate I’m going to need to get a job asap, but the more support I can have from things I enjoy doing, the more time I can dedicate to them! I don’t expect Apocalypsis to ever become a full-time job, but it would be nice to have something to help support this passion project of mine. :) I’ll be sure to update you guys!
Once I graduate, I will also look into making merch, including posters, prints, stickers, and maybe more!
This will be in a similar vein to the patreon, to help support this passion project, but also just ‘cause I think it would be frikkin cool to have stickers and prints! If you have any ideas or suggestions, merch you’d love to see, feel free to send me an ask and if I like it you never know! This also won’t happen for another few months, but it is absolutely something I plan on doing!
tldr; I’m graduating college, simplifying the comic style, and planning on opening a patreon / selling merch!

A Nice and Interpretive Fanzine: Information Masterpost
Welcome!
This is a zine for those of us who love the subtle, complex work that is Good Omens, and who’ve enjoyed the thoughtfulness of the fandom as people interpret how the many moving pieces of the story come together, creating a slightly different meaning for each of us.
To put it simply, it’s a book full of the fandom’s own analysis and commentary about the Good Omens TV show, enhanced with illustrations from our brilliant artists.
This zine is analytical in the sense that all the writers are expressing their own nonfiction thoughts and feelings about the show, rather than writing fanfic, but it is not meant to be heavily academic. Anybody who likes to pick apart the series and discuss it should be able to enjoy it.
The zine will contain essays by fans who are passionate about analyzing and interpreting different parts of Good Omens - the characters, the plot, the writing techniques for the book and script, the cinematography of the TV show, the popular content of the fandom itself. Accompanying these essays will be black and white illustrations from our artists.
How are you organizing this process?
May 1-May 15: Everyone submits their application to do writing or art through a Google form. Behind the scenes, I’ll be setting up a separate email and Discord.
May 16-20: Applicants will be screened during this time.
May 20: I’ll email everyone to let them know the outcomes of their applications. The final participants will get a link to the Discord server for the zine (totally optional, of course).
May 21: If there’s any clarification or solidifying of ideas that needs to happen, I’ll contact you and discuss with you by this point. This is also when artists will be matched up with essays.
May 22 to August 14: This will be a period of just working on our essays and art. The Discord chat and Tumblr will be there for support and for exchanging ideas!
August 15: Participants need to email their full works to the zine’s email address by this date. No special formatting is needed; I’ll do that in InDesign.
August 15 to August 31: I’ll be putting the zine together in InDesign.
September 1: Preorders will open.
September 30: Preorders will close.
October 1: The zine order will be placed!
October 15: Assuming all goes well with printing and shipping, the zines will be shipped out in waves starting on this date. If the printing or shipping from the manufacturer is delayed, then shipping will just start ASAP.

What are the specifications for the zine contributions?
For writers, I’m starting with 3k words or fewer per essay (approximately 10 pages at the size of this book). This depends heavily on how many participants we actually get, so it may change!
For artists, I’d be looking at black and white works, 300 DPI, 5.5 x 8.5 inches or smaller. If your art is supposed to fill up the entire page (i.e. no white space), please make it a total of 5.75 x 8.75 inches with nothing too important around the edges to account for bleed during the printing process.
Can I submit an essay to this zine if I’ve already posted it on Tumblr?
Not as you’ve already posted it. We don’t want to just copy/paste the exact thing that hundreds or perhaps even thousands of people have already read.
However, it IS fine and maybe even a good idea to take the same thought from your post and refine it, preserving your same thesis. For example, a lot of Tumblr posts are just us fans jotting down 5 or 6 paragraphs of random thoughts at 2 AM, but some of them are really cool thoughts! Expanding them and turning them into a bona-fide Essay would make those posts into excellent zine chapters. And you can copy small pieces of your own language as long as the whole thing isn’t just pasted word-for-word.
How long do essays have to be? Is there a limit?
With the number of writers we have, I've calculated that each person should ideally keep their essay to about 6000 words. There is wiggle room.
There’s no real minimum for your contribution; some analytical ideas are really good but can be expressed concisely, so it’s okay if your essays only come out to a few pages typed. For reference, with our book size, a page is about 300 words.
What happens if the zine sells a lot and you end up not only breaking even, but turning a profit?
It’ll go to charity. While I’ll ask the participants what they want to do for certain if we do make enough money, my suggestion will be donating it to Alzheimer’s Research UK in honor of Sir Terry Pratchett.
I’m not really comfortable calling this a “charity zine” up front since I simply don’t know if it will raise a significant amount. For the most part, I just want the thing to physically exist, which means breaking even, and don’t want to make it more expensive for buyers than it needs to be to afford the printing costs.
What kinds of essays are you talking about? What could be included?
In short, any analytical thoughts about the Good Omens TV show - and possibly even the fandom as it interacts with the show - are possible inclusions for the zine.
To expand a bit, think about the meta posts you see floating around Tumblr. Often these involve analyzing characters, or picking up on patterns in the plot. Sometimes fans use their own background knowledge to write posts about the significance of certain costume choices or the way music plays into each individual scene. Some posts examine the ways the series approaches gender, while others might discuss ways that the characters present as neurodivergent. That’s how diverse the pool of possibilities is for subjects in this zine.
How does art come into this?
Images will be black and white, to match the bookish mood of the project overall. Images can range in size from a half page to a full page.
I’m planning to talk to the artists and authors and loosely pair artists with essays that appeal to their personal interests.
I know how to illustrate a story, but how do I illustrate an essay?
There are infinite answers to this! I’ve seen some beautiful symbolic artwork in the fandom already (e.g. a number of takes on Aziraphale munching on an apple with Crowley in snake form curving around him), and there are tons of symbolic motifs to draw from, but these are not the only options. An artist illustrating an essay about cinematography, for example, could draw a well-known scene from an alternative angle. An essay about Heaven as a capitalist corporation could be illustrated with a cartoon of Gabriel giving some sort of excruciating PowerPoint presentation. A character analysis could be accompanied by a simple portrait. And on and on. I’m not interested in limiting the possibilities by trying to make a list, but just know that there are many and you don’t have to make it complicated if you don’t want to.
If the writers can reuse their essay ideas, can artists reuse their drawings?
Similarly to the writers, if you already have an interpretive drawing that you’re in love with, artists can use the same ideas and the same fundamental composition that is present in their own existing work. However, it has to be redone in some significant way. Whether it’s taking something you drew in 2019 and redrawing it using an updated style, taking a sketch and turning it into a lined and shaded piece, or redoing a full-color drawing so it presents more strikingly in black and white, it shouldn’t be identical to the thing you’ve already posted.
So how are you choosing participants here?
It’ll be based on what people are interested in writing about (or illustrating). I’ll be looking for people who are passionate about their essays, but I’ll also be looking for variety. It all depends on what people want to offer, so I won’t know for sure what it will look like put together until everyone’s application is in.
For artists, I’ll be trying to figure out whose style looks like it would adapt well to illustrations in black and white, and also who demonstrates an interest in the same subjects as the writers.
If we don’t get a lot of applicants, I’d love to simply include everyone, but I can’t commit to that without knowing for sure how many people are involved.
Do I have to use a formal writing style to participate?
No. You should use a style that makes your thoughts and ideas as clear as possible, but as long as it’s understandable, you can also get a little artistic with it. You can “write like you speak,” though perhaps in a more organized way. You definitely don’t need to worry about stylistic rules like not using the first person. This is not academia.
Is this zine going to center only on Crowley and Aziraphale?
That remains to be seen! It depends on what ideas show up in the applications. There will be a lot of the ineffable partners for sure, but whether the whole zine will center on them or whether there’s plentiful stuff about other characters will depend on what the participants suggest.
Do we have to agree with all your personal interpretations of Good Omens to be in the zine?
No! In fact, I’m assuming that a number of essays will contradict each other, too, and that’s perfectly okay. The zine is a sampler of fan interpretations meant to inspire, not instruct. It’s not “Here’s a fan-made guide on how to understand this TV show,” it’s “Look at all these moving parts and how many meanings we can find in them. What does it mean to you?”
However, there are some basic rules and assumptions by which I’m working here.
I don’t personally have the energy to include essays that are highly critical (“negative”) in this zine. It’s analytical but also meant to be fun.
I’m pretty focused on the TV adaptation. This isn’t “no book analysis allowed” but just that the essays will end up being weighted toward subjects that apply to either the TV show or both the book and the show.
Each writer should focus on making their own points over disproving other fan interpretations. If you’re writing in an expository style, it’s normal for the essay to contain rebuttals to opposing ideas, but these should be minor supporting points, not the heart and soul of your essay. For reference, I’d say the majority of meta I see floating around on tumblr would follow this rule just fine.
Essay ideas that seem to contain bigoted or exclusionary sentiments will not be accepted (no TERFy stuff, for example).
What kinds of editing will go into the zine? Are you going to argue with us about the contents of our writing?
While I might ask you to elaborate on certain points in your writing or clarify your thoughts about your subject, I’m absolutely not here to ask you to change the thesis, opinions, or headcanons on which your writing is based. If I really have a problem with your initial idea, I’ll tell you that up front and politely decline the contribution.
While formatting the zine, I’ll make minor edits if I think I see a typo or misspelling, something small and obviously unintentional. As with any other zine, your content won’t be changed without consulting you.
Is this a SFW zine?
Yes. If people want to discuss sexuality in a theoretical way, like erotic subtext, that would be allowed. There are canon references like Newt and Anathema’s moment under the bed that might come up, too. But there will be nothing explicit, and since these are essays instead of stories, there will be no “action” going on between characters. Let’s just say sex isn’t a forbidden topic, but it will be like discussing it in English class.
As for other topics that could make the zine NSFW, like gore or extreme language, I don’t think they will be an issue. Some dark topics, like abuse by Heaven and Hell, may be discussed, but they will be warned for, and these are not stories, so you aren’t going to see violent actions playing out.
Will there be any “extras” like charms or stickers?
I’m not sure yet. I’m most inclined to keep it simple, because of the nature of the zine, but would be open to including some bonus items if there’s an artist who’s really passionate about it.
With that said, I am pretty committed to making a hardcover edition of the book available, in addition to the standard softcover version.
You’re doing this with only one mod?!
Yes. I personally find it easiest. While I’ve worked on multi-mod projects in other domains and adore all of my co-mods, it’s a little bit different when it’s a project with this many moving pieces that includes real-life components like printing and shipping. Though there are a lot of individual things to be done, I am experienced with all of them, so it’s less overwhelming to just take on the whole project. That way, I know exactly what needs to be done and when, and there are no issues with assigning tasks.
What qualifies you to run this zine?
The résumé answer: in fandom, I successfully solo-modded a large not-for-profit zine in the past, the @soulmakazine2018, and while I can’t speak for the whole fandom, it definitely seemed to be well-received. <3 In real life, I’m a case manager and this involves coordinating and communicating with a lot of different people including my 100-person caseload, budgeting services, and filling out all kinds of paperwork on the fly, all skills that can be imported into zine work.
The practical answer: well, I’m the one who decided to start this project, so if you like the sound of it, you're stuck with me. I say with encouragement and enthusiasm that if you’d like to do a different take on a commentary zine, you should absolutely do it.

Reclaiming that broken youth.
Summary: Michael had made it his mission to relive a small piece of the past with Alex. First he tried with the rings, two chunky black and silver things that he’d claimed had been left at the junkyard during his one of his shifts. Alex had simply joked that they weren’t his style anymore and left it at that.
The eyeliner had been a much harder sell and still Alex had refused.
And now, as he was ambling his way up the driveway, he was starting to think that maybe his third attempt would not be so lucky.

Was it embarrassing the number of excuses he’d found to come and see Alex? Yes.
Was he going to stop anytime soon? Not likely.
Nostalgia had been rearing its ugly head again leaving him craving a time long since passed and he’d been coming up with whatever reason he could to justify seeing Alex. Going to his house, or the Project Shepard bunker, or the Crashdown where he just happened to bump into him. 
The photo of the two of them had been moved from the cardboard box to the desk along with the few other pictures he treasured of Max and Isobel - he couldn’t make it too obvious after all. But seeing the two of them together like that often made him miss what they used to have. Things were so much simpler back then, until they weren’t.
The problem with nostalgia though was that the feelings weren’t real. They were an echo of what used to be that tended to leave an uncomfortable emptiness the longer you thought about it.
That time had passed and there was no getting it back. Unless?
Surely they didn’t need to be seventeen again to get that feeling back. That soft, carefree feeling that used to settle on their skin as they kissed in the desert.

Three quick taps on the wood brought Alex to the door and he was so focused on the sight of him that Michael barely noticed the smile it brought to his own face. He was in full casual wear, t-shirt, jogging bottoms, matching bed hair sticking up in a perfect mess.
“Hey.” Alex welcomed him with a bright smile. If he was at all surprised to see Michael on his doorstep on an early Saturday morning with absolutely no warning, he hid it very well. His eyes darted over to see where the truck had been parked comfortably on the driveway, before flitting back to Michael.
“I thought we could have some fun.” Michael spoke with a smirk, forgoing any formal greeting, eyes already glistening with mischief. And oh how differently that sentence would have been taken when they were seventeen.
Alex was about to step aside without hesitation when he noticed the box held gently in Michael’s grip. He eyed it warily, already sensing the reasoning for the visit. “What is that?”
“Fun!”
“Um no, I believe that’s called hair dye.”
“Just hear me out.” Michael grinned as he confidently side-stepped his way through the doorway and into the house. “We haven’t hung out properly in a while and we both have the day off…”
Alex shook his head as he pushed the door closed behind him and followed Michael towards the living room. He never would have denied Michael entry, but there was something about him making himself at home that gave Alex a warm feeling in his chest. “See, you keep saying we but I don’t see a box of dye for your hair anywhere.”
“Yeah, well I never had an emo phase, did I?”
“The important word there being phase.” Alex crossed his arms against his chest as he peered down at Michael’s hands again. It was a white box with a bunch of writing on it, but the guy on the front was very clearly modelling the black dye inside. “You know I never actually used to dye my hair back then, right?”
Michael shrugged and waved his hand in the air as if to say whatever, we’re doing it anyway and handed the box over for Alex to get a better look. “You vetoed my other options so I’m stepping up my game.”
Alex watched him closely, noting how he squirmed slightly under his gaze. At first, when Michael had started dropping by a few weeks ago, always at odd hours, always unannounced, Alex had been worried. The ‘hanging out’ excuse could easily have been a guise, an easy escape from any problems he was avoiding and Alex didn’t know how long was best to let Michael hide from whatever was going on.
But seeing him now, wide eyes filled with an innocent sort of playfulness, it looked like Michael really did just want to spend time with him. Even if he did have the most random idea for a pass time. “Why are you so desperate for me to dress all emo again?”
“For…fun?”
Alex chewed his bottom lip to hide the small smile threatening to emerge. “I’m only off work for a week, you know.”
“That’s why it’s temporary.” Michael turned the box around in Alex’s hand and tapped at the words printed clearly on the back. “Three washes and it’s gone.”
“You’ve got an answer for everything, haven’t you?”

Michael wasted no time in getting them set up. He grabbed a spare plastic bowl from the kitchen cupboard, an old towel that Alex didn’t care about dirtying and set Alex’s shower stool in front of the large bathroom mirror. 
He should have been embarrassed by how excited he was getting, but he was far too busy being filled with said excitement to care. Against all odds, Alex had actually agreed to do this with very little persuasion required and there was no way he was letting him change his mind.
Alex didn’t interrupt as Michael rummaged his way around the house, finding what he needed and he certainly didn’t show his bemusement at how Michael seemed to know exactly where everything was. And once everything was ready, he took his place in the designated seat, strangely nervous at the thought of Michael dyeing his hair.
Though maybe it wasn’t nerves. He certainly had butterflies, though it could be from the thought of engaging in this teenage sleepover-esque activity. For the boy he liked to come over to his house and willingly run his fingers through his hair for the next hour? Seventeen year old Alex would have done anything for this.
“Right, tell me what to do.” Michael said as he pulled the instructions from the box and handed them to Alex before emptying the rest of the contents next to the sink. He’d probably end up doing it his own way, but he just wanted to give Alex an excuse to stop staring at him as he worked.
As Alex unravelled the instructions a small packet of gloves fell out onto his lap. They didn’t look the sturdiest but it was better than nothing. “There’s the gloves so make sure you wear them,” he said as he placed them next to the bowl.
He gave a quick skim read of the words to get a general idea of what do. There was a lot of writing and he doubted Michael would be patient for long enough to get through it all. “Oh okay, this sounds pretty easy, literally just brush it evenly through my hair.”
Michael nodded distractedly as he carefully fiddled with the lid of the tube. The room wasn’t exactly big and he’d already elbowed a wall with one arm and knocked the empty bowl to the floor with the other. Tripping over the towel had been an added bonus that Alex had enjoyed far too much. He had no idea where this clumsiness had suddenly come from, but now he was being extra careful with everything.
“Put it in gently. We don’t want it going everywhere.” Alex instructed him as he squeezed the dye into the bowl. The coal-black cream squelched as it left the tube and a small drop splattered onto the white tile wall which Michael hastily wiped with the back of his hand. It smeared across the wall at first until he managed to clean it all off.
With everything set up, he clamped Alex’s towel covered shoulders and beamed at him through the mirror’s reflection. “You ready?”
“Go for it.” Alex rolled his eyes at the enthusiasm radiating off Michael. Yep, he definitely felt like a teenager right now.
Michael started out slow. The dye was cool against his fingers as he scooped a blob into his palm. He knew Alex would be able to wash it out almost instantly if it ended up looking terrible, but still, he didn’t want to get it wrong.
He took a breath before reaching for Alex’s hair. Only now did it click just how intimate this activity was for two people who had barely done more than stand a few feet away from each other recently. He thought it would be a bit of fun, getting Alex to dress up in his old high school persona that they both used to love. But now, with the dye in his hand, he realised that meant running his fingers through Alex’s hair. An action that he used to love whenever they kissed. The smooth strands under his fingertips, pulling him closer when he could no longer control his urges.
But they were friends now. And friends dyed each other’s hair, right? Friends helped each other put on makeup or decided outfits if one was going on a date, so doing each other’s hair was no different from all of that.
The strands of hair slid across his palm easily, turning from dark brown to black with a single touch. It felt just as soft as it did ten years ago.
The room was silent as he worked save for Michael’s movements and the occasional hmm from Alex. Michael wasn’t sure if Alex realised that he was making the little noises but he was just glad he was finding it relaxing. The casual glances over Alex’s head and into the mirror showed that his eyes were closed, his lips curled into a small smile.
Michael was surprised by how much he was enjoying it himself. He was used to working with his hands all day, but this was different. Working on the cars was methodical, a heavy-handed muscle memory from years of experience, but this? This was gentle, personal.
It took about as long as would be expected to cover hair of Alex’s length and as Michael moved to the front so he could finish up the fringe, Alex opened his eyes to watch him work, “So really, what’s with all the emo stuff?”
Michael avoided the eye contact as he concentrated on turning the remaining brown into black. How could he explain that he was feeling nostalgic without it sounding sappy?
“It’s probably just some misguided attempt at reclaiming my youth.” He answered as he scooped more dye onto his fingers.
“Okay, but it seems more like we’re reclaiming my youth.”
“Yeah, well, this part of your youth was the best part of mine.” Michael replied without thinking, feeling the heat instantly rise up his cheeks at the honest answer.
The mortification was written so clear on his face that Alex forced himself to hold back a chuckle. They were still working on getting that openness back to their friendship, so for it to come out so easily every now and then was a nice step in the right direction.
“I actually always wanted to dye my hair back then.” Alex spoke up, steering into a new conversation to save Michael’s embarrassment. “It seemed like the next logical step for my fashion choice.”
“So why didn’t you?”
“Getting the eyeliner passed dad was enough of a challenge and even then it was something I could take off pretty instantly if need be. I think the dye would have been too much of a risk.”
Michael felt a pang of sympathy for all Alex had to endure back then, he’d seen it firsthand several times all the way up until Jesse Manes’ death after all. But no. They weren’t going to dwell on that today. If they were reclaiming their youth then all unwanted memories were unwelcome and henceforth banned from all thoughts. 
He nudged Alex’s shoulder playfully as he moved back to the bowl. “And you didn’t have an expert hairdresser to do it for you.”
“That too.” Alex laughed, rolling his eyes as he heard the sound of yet another blob of dye dropping to the floor, “Though I didn’t expect my hairdresser to get it everywhere but my hair.”
Michael gritted his teeth with a frown as he looked down at the small black splatter, a glaringly obvious stain against the white. “Hey, that’s only the third time.”
He ran his hands through Alex’s hair for the last time, being careful to check that every strand was covered. The dye had already started doing its job beautifully and emo Alex was very much taking hold.
It was as he was stepping back to inspect his finished work did he notice just how much of a mess he’d actually made, sheepishly pointing out to Alex that there was some on the edge of the sink, a few blobs in the shower and it was on the wall in about four different places.
“How the hell did it get there, I didn’t even go near that wall.” Michael exclaimed, utterly confounded at the mess he’d managed to create. Had he been in his own head so much that his hands had taken on a life of their own? 
“It’s fine,” Alex laughed fondly as he nudged the bin closer with his foot. “Just put the gloves in there before you touch anything else.”
“…wait, there were gloves?”
Alex turned around this time to look at Michael properly. He hadn’t noticed the lack of gloves on the hands in his hair, but looking at them now he could see they were completely covered not by the plastic, but by a creamy black gunk. Michael had a mischievous look on his face, tongue pressed against the inside of his cheek as he tried not to snigger and Alex could feel himself doing the same. “What is the first thing I said to you?”
“Put it in gently?”
They couldn’t hold back their laughter. Scrubbing his hands removed all but the faint grey tint now dyed into his skin, but Michael didn’t care. Maybe it was all the dye fumes, but it felt like he was on a weird kind of high. Here they were, two boys giggling away like they’d been caught making out in the supply closet at school and in that moment everything felt right with the world.
Leaning back against the sink Michael crossed his arms as he admired Alex’s hair from the front. Even slicked back against his head it was looking good but they still had twenty minutes to fill before it was ready. “So, what should we do while we wait?”
Alex slyly leant over to the bowl, still filled a quarter of the way with leftover dye and waggled his eyebrows impishly at the horrified look Michael was now giving him. “Come on Guerin, it washes out.”
It really was quite a small bathroom with nowhere to run so as Alex stood up to get closer, Michael backed away so much he practically fell into the shower. The laughter returned as he tried to hide as much of his hair as he could with his arms. “Nope. These curls are sacred and there’s no way you’re turning them black. The most you’d ever get on me is the eyeliner.”
Alex gasped gleefully, eyes wide with excitement as he watched it dawn on Michael what he’d just said. He opened the bathroom cabinet and there, at the back of the bottom shelf, was Michael’s latest gift to him. Still unused, he’d only kept it for sentimental reasons, a fond reminder of his past self, but now Michael had no excuse.
“Take a seat.” Alex batted his eyelids innocently as he gestured to the stool he had vacated and Michael had no choice but to comply. He always found it hard to deny Alex anything, but right now, he’d do anything to keep that joy in his eyes.
Alex hadn’t used eyeliner in over ten years. At age seventeen it had taken him weeks to perfect the art without smudging it or poking himself in the eye and when he first joined the military he often missed the soothing action of it. But now, a decade on, he still held the pencil with the hands of someone who would never forget how to use it.
Michael looked up at him expectantly from the seat, a slight tingling rushing through him as Alex held his chin to tilt it upwards. He’d never worn any kind of makeup before, never really had the urge to, but there was always a first time for everything.
There was something quite sexy about Alex knowing exactly what to do, telling him when to look up, when to blink, pressing the pencil down just enough to leave the colour on his skin, but not too soft that it tickled. His hands were very gentle as they held Michael’s face and he felt his mind wandering as he let Alex work.
“Guerin, stay still or it’s going in your eye.” Alex admonished lightly, tongue poking out as he concentrated. He was surprised by how steady his hand was being and he didn’t want to mess it up now.
He gave a few more strokes before stepping away, tapping the pencil against his chin as he admired his work with a grin. An eyeliner-wearing Michael was never a look he’d imagined before, but it sure was a look he was appreciating. It was a subtle change, but one that made Alex want to dress him in a leather jacket and start a rock band with him. “All done.”
Mourning the loss of Alex’s touch, Michael sighed as he got to his feet, knees popping as he stood up and leaned in close to the mirror.
He looked…different. Not a bad different, maybe even a good different. It made his eyes seem brighter and his lashes look darker and the longer he looked in the mirror the wider he could see Alex’s smile getting.
“Alright, I’ll give you this one. It doesn’t look too bad.”
“Right!” Alex was practically giddy as he stepped closer to look at Michael’s eyes through the mirror. Their hands brushed lightly as they both leaned against the sink. “I didn’t think it would look this good, but now I’m starting to wish you’d had this look in high school.”
Michael turned to face him then, bottom lip between his teeth as his eyes roamed over Alex’s face. Maybe this whole nostalgia thing wasn’t so bad when you had someone to share it with.
He grabbed the eyeliner from Alex’s hand before he could be stopped and held it above his head with an eager grin as if Alex couldn’t reach it easily. “Your turn.”

Michael had been banished to the sofa while Alex washed out the dye. He’d willingly volunteered to help but Alex wanted the finished look to be a surprise. Not that he could blame him. If it looked terrible at least it would give Alex the chance to kick Michael out of the house before he even saw it.
Not that that would actually happen, Michael had done an excellent job and the finished article would prove just that, thank you very much.
The muffled noise of the shower turning on and off filtered through the walls as he peered around the room. He’d seen the inside of Alex’s house enough times now to know the layout but not enough to know its contents. 
The colourful spines of the neat pile of books stood out against the brown of the table they were sitting on. Their titles were too small to read from across the room but it made Michael wonder what kind of books Alex read now. He’d never thought to ask in all the time he’d been back in Roswell. Did he still read fantasy books like the ones Michael used to see him get lost in for hours at a time? Or were they non-fiction, filled with facts about a world that Alex had always longed to explore.
There were a few plants dotted around the room which Michael was nerdy enough to know the names of. They weren’t the type that required much watering though Michael could almost picture a green-thumbed Alex taking care to provide them what they needed.
But taking up most of the space was a whole range of musical items. A turntable alongside a crowded box of records, because of course that’s how Alex liked to listen to his music. A pair of speakers on either of side of his keyboard, a thick black pair of headphones sitting atop the black and white keys. And guitars. So many guitars.
I mean come on, four of them in one room? Alex was practically begging him to pick one up.
Three of them were next to the keyboard, held neatly on their individual stands, but it was the guitar standing alone that caught his attention. It was leaning almost precariously against the wall, looking like it could slide to the floor at the smallest touch but he had a feeling it had been there for a while. It was the one Alex had tried to gift to him all those months ago, after all.
Before he could stop himself, he pushed off the sofa and edged towards the guitar. Its case had been unzipped just enough at the top to show the dark brown wood poking through and Michael didn’t hesitate to unzip it the rest of the way.
Plucking a few of the strings made Michael wonder if maybe Alex had played it recently. It seemed to be perfectly in tune. It had been a little while now since he’d held a guitar, let alone played one, but this one seemed to fit so naturally in his hands.
The faint whirring of the hair dryer could now be heard through the bedroom door and Michael couldn’t help himself. His fingers fell into place effortlessly and played a tune that he once played for Alex all those years ago. It wasn’t hard to remember, it was one of the only songs he actually knew by heart and the muscle memory of the notes hadn’t failed him yet.
As the strings vibrated under his fingertips, the rest of the world fell away, the soft melody filling the room. He’d missed this, the calm that would wash over him whenever he used to play and for a brief moment as his fingers slipped between the C and G chords he wondered why he ever gave the guitar back.
“Suits you.” Alex’s quiet voice interrupted the notes and Michael almost dropped the guitar in his surprise. He hadn’t heard the hairdryer stop, hadn’t heard the door creaking open but the way Alex was smiling at him told him he had nothing to feel embarrassed about.
The smile wasn’t what he was focused on though.  
The inky black hair had turned out so much better than he’d ever imagined. The dark strands contrasted his lightly tanned skin so starkly and Michael could tell that he had taken a few extra minutes to style it a little.
His eyeliner was mismatched and uneven - one eye having been done badly by Michael before Alex, fearing the idea of getting poked in the eye again, had confiscated the pencil and finished the second eye perfectly by himself.
He looked like his innocent seventeen year old self. 
But also not. His features were matured enough to set the illusion off-kilter just slightly.
He looked incredible.
Michael wasn’t sure when his legs had made the decision to stand up, but here he was, two feet away from Alex, staring at him with his mouth half open. Alex took the silence the wrong way though as he gave a nervous laugh, feeling his cheeks redden.
He anxiously rubbed the back of his neck and the movement knocked Michael out of his daze. He slowly dragged his eyes away from Alex’s hair and down to his lips, watching them form the words as he spoke. “It looks terrible, doesn’t it?”
Had Alex even looked in the mirror? Had he not seen what Michael was seeing right now? 
And it’s not even like the hair and makeup changed him that much. He’s looked beautiful the entire time Michael has known him, he just looked beautiful with his old style right this second rather than his new one. 
Maybe Michael just always thought Alex looked most comfortable in his seventeen-year-old style, it was a look he had precisely crafted for himself to best represent the person he was. The black jumpers with bold patterns, the makeup, the piercings. It was the look of a rebellious kid who didn’t want to fit in.
His current style was created through circumstance, through being forced to take on a duty that he never chose but has now made his own. And his style was his own now too, the muted colours much more reserved, but still his choice.
But now standing before him was a beautiful combination of both of those people and oh dear, he’s never really stopped thinking about Alex this way, has he? And more important, how long has he been staring at him without saying a single word?
He could feel his heart pounding in his chest and his throat had gone strangely dry.
“No.” He whispered in reply as he stepped closer, his feet making their own decisions again and he suddenly couldn’t stop himself. In that moment he couldn’t remember why he had been holding back for all of these months when the person he wanted most in the world was standing right in front of him.
He kissed him before he could stop himself, hands gently grabbing Alex’s face, feeling soft lips against his own. It felt like he was seventeen again, kissing for the first time in the darkened rooms of the UFO Emporium but as his hands crept up into Alex’s hair the sound of a distant car horn through the open kitchen window broke through his dream-filled haze and he realised what he had just done.
“Oh god, I’m sorry.” Michael stuttered out as he pulled away with a gasp, instantly embarrassed at how impulsive he had been. He bit his bottom lip as his eyes stayed trained on Alex’s chest, not daring to lift them any higher. In one tiny moment of weakness he had broken their agreement and he wanted to kick himself for how stupid that had been.
It had been decided that they would just be friends. No drama, no fighting and definitely no sex. The relationship between them would be strictly supportive and platonic and as much as Michael had longed for them to be something, he had agreed for the sake of keeping any kind of connection with Alex. And turns out, he couldn’t even give him that.
If he had looked up he would have seen the surprise on Alex’s face. Surprise that Michael had kissed him - sure - but more the surprise that Michael had pulled away so abruptly. And far too soon for that matter.
Before Alex could talk himself out of it, he took Michael’s face in his hands and kissed him right back. His heart fluttered as Michael instantly pulled him closer, softer this time, as if they both knew in that moment that there was no rush.
Michael’s entire body tingled, heat filling his chest as Alex lips parted with a tiny breath. He was hardly aware of what his own hands were doing, so desperate to never let go, his knees almost giving out as the rest of the world fell away, leaving them in their intimate, almost forbidden, moment.
As his fingers ran through the soft strands of the freshly dyed hair, Michael was reminded of every other time they had performed this same action, how natural this felt, how safe, like coming home.
“I would have let you dye my hair weeks ago if I’d known that’s all it would take.” Alex sighed as they parted, still only inches from Michael’s face, not daring to move any further lest the spell be broken. He hadn’t seen the day going this way when Michael had turned up on his doorstep with his mischievous grin but he wasn’t about to complain.
Michael gave a small huff of laughter at the unexpected comment, his hands itching to pull Alex closer. He had been wanting to do that for a long time, but he’d been good. He’d stuck to their agreement and given Alex the space to move on, no matter how many times he’d wanted to rebuild that abandoned bridge between them. But it seems the long awaited move had now finally been made and he didn’t have to hold back anymore.  
Because here Alex was, black hair, dark eyeliner, standing in front of him with that nervous post-kiss smile that Michael had missed for far too long and now he never wanted to let this moment go.
It seems today had definitely been third time lucky.
Very lucky indeed.

A/N: Hi Nonny! Thank you so much for this prompt. I’m so sorry it took me a while to write, but I hope it was worth the wait. I went back and forth while writing this between making it a reader-insert and using Jess as an actual OC and finally settled on the latter, because it just felt right. (Which is probably how I will continue to write this pair going forward also.) Word Count: 3493 Rating: G - mostly fluff - heights (and fear of influencing how it’s written), a little swearing, referenced/implied panic attack
Jess closed the shop at 6pm on the dot, giving herself an hour to get ready for...whatever Ollie had planned. There weren’t a lot of places to go out to dinner in the area, and she desperately hoped he wouldn’t start out by inviting her home to meet the infamous Charlie Sway. She chewed nervously on her nail, staring at her closet. She knew she needed something that would work for anything, but her mind continued to run in circles trying to decide exactly what that meant. 
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d given this much thought to what she looked like on someone else’s account. It felt strange to say the least. But, she mused, not a bad kind of strange. Eventually, she settled on a cute cream-colored sweater and jeans, hoping that the evening temperature dropped enough to make them reasonable.
There was a soft knock on the door and she frantically cast one last look over herself in the mirror, smoothing down her shirt and hair, stomach twisting nervously. 
She threw open the door perhaps a bit overenthusiastically, a warm expression on her face. 
“Hi,” she greeted him, the single syllable all she could get out as she met those soft blue eyes. 
Ollie grinned when he saw her, the excited, adoring expression making her heart flutter. It was hard for Jess not to scoff at the cliché, when she was behaving like the protagonists of the romances she sold by the dozen. But at least he was looking at her the same way, and seemed at least momentarily speechless. 
“Uh, do you want to come in?” she offered meekly after a moment, gesturing over her shoulder. “Or I can come out, and we can...I mean...um...”
The two of them stood there, staring at each other dumbly for a moment, on either side of the doorway. 
“So...where are we going?” she asked after a long pause ripe with awkward tension. She wanted to kick herself. Ollie had been so easy to talk to from the moment he walked into her store, but now, suddenly they were going on a proper date and everything felt different?
“I have a picnic bag in the back of my car, and I thought we could drive somewhere, and then maybe hike a bit?”
“A hike?” she asked nervously. “Like, up into the mountains?”
“Yeah. There’s a point up there that has great views of the entire town and the lake. Nik heard about it from one of the girls at the bar we were flirting with…I mean he was flirting with mostly. It wasn’t...I mean I didn’t...and this was before I met you…”
“Ollie,” she laughed lightly, tilting her head to one side to look at him. “I’m not the blushing, swooning virginal maiden, and I don’t expect you to be either.” 
He coughed, face turning crimson and she couldn’t help smiling fondly. Finally, things were feeling a little more normal, this was still the same Ollie she had come to adore. 
“You’re also only here for the summer, or however long it takes you to find your Dad’s record. So I hadn’t set my hopes on serious, or exclusive. I just think you’re cute, and fun to be around, so why not enjoy something and see what happens with it?”
“Oh.” His face twisted as he considered her words.
“However, I don’t think a hike is a good idea. It’s going to be dark soon.”
“There’s still almost two hours before sunset, and I brought flashlights so we can get back down the mountain.”
Of course, he had planned ahead. It would be stupid to plan a hiking date and not account for that, and he was far from stupid. And they were both dressed fine for the occasion. Her mind quested desperately for some other reason that they shouldn’t go and came up blank. So instead she held up a finger for him to wait, and went back to collect her camera. If she were going to do this, she might as well get some good photographs out of it, she rationed. Maybe even one she could sell prints of, if she was incredibly lucky. (She already felt insanely so, when such a wonderful boy wanted to go out with her, so why not see how far that streak ran?)

The first part of the hike went surprisingly smoothly, and it didn’t take long before Jess and Ollie were joking and laughing, scrabbling over rocks like young goats, playing eye-spy with the woods, any weirdness melting away in the evening sun. She barely noticed the way their path climbed, and felt completely relaxed.
Gradually, without her noticing, the trail narrowed and became steeper, until it rounded a tight bend up ahead, nothing but air off to her left and solid rock to the right. She swallowed nervously, trying to keep her eyes from the empty space. All of her joviality dropped away like the ground. 
“Jess?” Ollie asked, noticing her discomfort as she edged very slowly along. “Are you alright?”
“Yes. Yeah. Fine. I just...don’t like heights.” She answered, breath and words coming in short bursts. 
“Oh. Shit. Um, we can turn back if you want? I didn't realize you--”
“No. No, it's fine. We're here now. I'll make it through. You just might have to hold my hand for the way back down.”
She’d meant it as a joke, a light flirtation to distract her from the many, many feet she could fall with one misstep. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to be doing any good, as her mind found a way to focus on both the space and how cheesy the sentence was.
“Do...you want me to now?” he countered, holding one slim hand out. 
She flashed him a small smile, taking it with her own and trying not to think too much about how nice, how right it felt. “You’ve been taking lessons with Nikolai haven’t you?”
“What?”
“That was smooth, Oliver,” she teased, enjoying the way he turned red all the way to the tips of his ears.

Eventually, the young couple made it to the overlook, with much gentle guidance from Ollie to keep Jess’s nerves from overwhelming her, and she gasped. The lake stretched out below them, still and silver in the evening light, shining like a mirror. Tiny specks of color, moving too fast or too far for the eye to really track marked the boaters and jetskis, and kites flown from the small public beach. Most of the buildings disappeared into the verdant green surroundings, and the ones she could still spot looked like houses and shops and mansions for Polly Pockets, not people. The sun was just starting to dip behind the mountains on the far side of the lake, hazy outlines of shadow against the sherbert sky. 
“Oh, Ollie,” she breathed, stunned. “It’s beautiful.”
He mumbled something she didn’t catch and started unpacking the picnic he’d brought in his backpack. Not wanting to disturb him, and clearly left to her own devices for the moment, she took out her camera, adjusting the lens carefully, capturing as much of the view as she could. Then, on an impulse she turned around and snapped one of Ollie, silhouetted against the forest and the peeks of sunset between the trees, before he could notice. The sound of the shutter, or the finishing touches being put on dinner, made him look up.
“What are you doing, Jess?” he asked, confusion written across his features. 
“Taking pictures of beautiful things,” she answered with a shrug, bringing the camera to her eye again.
“No,” he held up his hand to block it, laughing. 
“I’m serious. This place, up here away from it all, suits you.”
“You’re full of shit, Jess.” He shook his head, his hair falling across his face.
She took another photo while his guard was down. 
“Come sit down. Marlena put together a good meal.” 
Relenting after another photo out into the distance, almost wishing she dared to get closer to the edge of the overlook, she carefully disassembled her camera, storing each piece with reverence back in its bag, before sitting across from him. He had set up quite the array on the blanket: simple but delicious looking toasted sandwiches, glasses and lemonade, berries and chunks of watermelon, and what looked like very freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies.
“Ollie, it looks amazing,” she said with a smile, popping a sweet, juicy blackberry into her mouth with a small, exaggerated moan. “And tastes even better.”
He blushed, shrugging and laughing sheepishly. “All I did was carry it up here.”
She rolled her eyes as he deflected yet another compliment. He seemed to always be doing that, much to her frustration, and she made a mental note to find a way to make him see how much she meant them, how true each one was. 
Silence fell over the two of them as they started picking at the buffet between them, but it was an easy one, a pause rather than an interruption, and eventually conversation resumed. She asked him about his search for his father’s record and listened as he spoke of the things he had found, which weren’t what he was looking for but seemed to bring (mostly) happy memories of his childhood. He asked for stories of her family, and of what the town was like when summer-people left. 
“Sway Lake is a different place,” she concluded eventually, casting her eyes about her on the clifftop, “just like it is from up here. Or frozen in a moment in your record.” 
By now the remains of the food had been set aside, and the pair had scooted closer on the picnic blanket, sitting side by side and facing out, instead of across from one another. Hesitantly, Jess shifted her hand closer so that their pinkies brushed, daring him to take action and hold her hand again. He didn’t seem to notice as he turned to face her, eyebrows knitted in confusion. 
“I…” he cleared his throat and started over. “You have a really unique view of the world.” 
Something in the way he said it made it feel like the kindest compliment someone could give, and it was finally her turn to blush, ducking her head to hide as her cheeks heated furiously. 
“I mean I guess,” she fiddled with the edge of the picnic blanket beside her, plucking at a loose thread so she didn’t have to meet his eyes just yet. “I’ve never really thought about it like that...”
“The view up here must be great for photos,” he said, making her laugh at his abrupt change of subject, obviously picking up on her embarrassment and knowing it well. 
“Yeah, it is. I’m hoping they come out well. Thank you for showing it to me.”
“The way people were talking, it’s pretty well known...how come you haven’t been up here before?”
“Heights, remember?” she flashed him a half-smile as she tilted her head to one side. “I’ve never had someone invite me before who seemed worth the risk.”
“How do you know if something’s worth it without ever seeing it?”
“You know your record is without hearing it don’t you? Besides, I said someone, not something.”
He froze, blinking owlishly at her. 
“Ollie?” she asked after a long pause, wondering what was going on with him suddenly.
“Can I kiss you?” he blurted, and now it was her turn to freeze, the question momentarily incomprehensible. 
“Yes,” she breathed, barely getting the word out before his lips were pressed against hers. 
The contact was abrupt, almost a headbutt but more romantic. There was a moment of awkward fumbling, of bumping noses and clashing teeth, until their mouths finally slotted together properly. Even after finding the right way to connect, there was a split second of hesitation, and then his hands came up to frame her jaw, pulling her closer, the tips of his fingers teasing at her hairline and the small hairs that had escaped the scrunchie holding most of it back. Keeping one of her own hands on the blanket to hold herself steady, Jess wrapped the other around the back of his neck like an anchor and leaned into the pressure of his soft lips on hers. 
All too soon he pulled away, panting breathlessly, and staring at her with an awe that made her own breath catch in her throat. She was half tempted to pull him back into another kiss, if only to make him stop looking at her like that. 
A distant roll of thunder shattered the moment, and her eyes flickered toward the clouds gathering on the blue-purple horizon. 
“We should probably head back, before that gets here,” she said reluctantly, wishing she had more time.
Ollie nodded in agreement, and the two of them made quick work of packing back up the remains of the picnic. He handed her a heavy black flashlight (that, she noted gratefully, and then laughed internally at her own thought, would double as a decent weapon against a rogue mountain lion at least long enough to run) and set off down the mountain. She tried to follow him without looking down, but the uneven terrain in the growing darkness made that too difficult to maintain. Soon the very idea filled her with just as much fear as looking. The edge of the path seemed to drop sharply, drawing ever closer to her feet in the narrow beam of yellow light, until it felt like she was walking along the very line of the drop. 
She stopped short with a yelp, head spinning from the sensation and whole body trembling. The sound made Ollie turn around sharply, placing himself as a barrier between her and the fall as she pressed her back firmly against the rock. 
He took her by the shoulders, trying to get her to make eye contact instead of staring blankly at the sight, or lack of sight beyond him. 
“Jess? Can you hear me?” he asked. “It’s alright, Jess. I’m right here, I won’t let you fall.”
Her blood roared in her ears and she saw his lips move but it was too loud for her to hear him.
When talking didn’t seem to work, he wrapped his arms around her, drawing her into a tight hug. Her fingers curled into his sweatshirt, clinging to him like a lifeline. Face pressed into the side of his neck she let out a sob, as the world spun around her much too fast.

The rest of the journey down to Ollie’s station wagon and much of the drive were a blur. Jess wasn’t completely unconvinced that he had somehow found a way to carry her down, although that was giving his physical strength more credit than he looked like it deserved. The storm picked up as they drove, clouds turning the sky to black, lit only by the occasional crash of lightning, and rain slamming against the roof and windows.
All too soon, the car stopped, parking in the narrow street in front of her building. They exited the car and promptly Ollie took her by the hand, lacing their fingers together. Not wanting to stand in the rain, she used the point of contact to drag him along, running as if she could dodge the water falling from the sky until they made it to her door. They stood there under the eaves, hair and clothing dripping, facing each other reluctantly, not wanting to say goodnight just yet.
“Tonight was…” he said, pausing. 
“Amazing?” she finished, smiling and feeling the light heat of a blush on her cheeks.
“Yeah. That.” He smiled back, and looked for a moment (during which her heart beat like a bird trying to escape her chest) like he was going to kiss her again. “I should let you go inside…”
“Stay over,” she blurted out before she could consider the words. 
“W-what?” he stared at her like she’d just grown an extra head or twelve. “Jess I can’t do that…”
“It’s late. And the weather’s bad. And I saw you yawning while we were driving back. I’d worry about you if you tried to go home now.”
“It’s just around the other side of the lake…”
“Yeah, but that’s like half an hour unless you drive recklessly. All it takes is drifting off for a second...please stay?”
“But...what will people think?”
“People,” she raised an eyebrow, “or your grandmother?”
“I don’t just mean her. I don’t want you to be treated like--”
“A slut?” 
He shuffled and looked away. 
“People aren’t that bad, you know. There are a handful of dicks, but most of town doesn’t give a shit.” 
“I didn’t mean…” he frowned. “I’m a Sway. I know people don’t like my family. If you’re seen with me like that...I know what being an outcast feels like, and I don’t want you to have to feel that way.”
“Well I guess you'll just have to make sure no one sees, then.” She smirked, before she sighed. “Look, Ollie. We're grown adults. What we do at night, or any other time, or with whom is no one's business but our own.”
“I know but--”
“No. No buts. I wouldn't have invited you to sleep over if I didn't mean it, or I wasn't prepared for gossip and fallout. It’s up to you. I just would feel a lot better if you did.”
“You really want me to stay?”
She rolled her eyes and fixed him with a look rather than actually answering. The wet breeze sent a shiver over her as she turned to unlock the door, not waiting anymore for him to make a decision. 
“And it’s not...too fast?”
She shrugged, taking him by the arm to pull him into the house and into a kiss. Her other hand threaded into his hair and his hovered over her hips as if he wasn’t quite sure he was allowed to touch her .
“Too fast is a myth,” she murmured, breath ghosting across his face. “Besides, I was inviting you into my house, not my bed.” 
She’d lost count by now of the number of times she’d managed to make Ollie blush tonight, but each time you did was just as adorable as the first. 
“Although, I was going to offer to take the couch,” she said over your shoulder as she led the way toward the furniture in question, “so I guess it was...also...into my bed…this is...I’m making it weird.”
“What? No!” he fumbled to reassure her. “I mean, no. You’re not, not no I won’t sleep in...I don’t want to, without you. Not that we have to sleep together. It’s just. It’s your bed.”
“God we’re a pair,” she said, laughing now as she dropped down and motioned for him to sit beside her. “Tripping over ourselves like romantic baby deer.”
“I just don’t want to mess this up,” he admitted sheepishly, sitting awkwardly perched on the edge of the cushion as if he was going to run at any moment. 
“Is there...something to mess up?” she asked, reaching over to take his hand and lacing her fingers through his. 
“I think so,” the words may have been a statement but his face was a question as he turned toward her a little more. “I don't want this to be some summer fling, Jess. I want it to be real.”
“Hey, summer flings can also be real. There was this one guy who…” she paused at Ollie's expression and shook her head, “never mind. The point is they're not mutually exclusive. But I appreciate the sentiment. And I’d really like that too.”
“What does that mean though?” he asked. 
She paused. “That’s what we have to decide. But...not tonight. It’s late. We should go to bed and talk about it when we’re rested.” She fought back a yawn that emphasized her point as she stood. 
He nodded, watching her turn and cross the room, eyes lingering low. It took him a moment to realize when she had stopped moving again. 
“Well aren't you coming?” 
“What?” he squeaked out. 
“It occurs to me, the bed is big enough for two and way more comfortable than the couch.”
“I…”
“I just mean to sleep, for real. And, I guess, maybe cuddling?” She bit her lip nervously. “Unless you're not good with that…”
He stared for another long, awkward moment. “Even with my nightmares?”
She shrugged. “Yeah. I’ll deal. Or maybe having someone else beside you will help.” 
Ollie scrambled to his feet, nearly tripping over himself in his rush to join her by the doorway. She laughed, lacing her fingers with his and leading him further through the apartment, silently marveling at how well things had gone, for a first date.

Alone, in the teacher's lounge, Loki poured himself a cup of coffee. His hands were shaking. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
He didn't hear the principal come in and jumped at the sound of her voice.
"I know about the accident in Vanaheim Square.  Carol and I had to get there because there were students from the school on the bus. Fortunately none of them were hurt. The paramedics who knew you were a teacher here, told us you put up a good fight for that man."
Loki sighed, "But it wasn't enough. I may know first aid perfectly, but it wasn't enough." He paused, his throat tight before continuing, "I have to get back to class."
He headed for the door.
"Loki?"
Loki stopped and turned around, Natasha put her hand on his shoulder and said gently, "Do me a favor. On your day off, get as far away from here as you can. Okay? Go somewhere you feel... somewhere that brings you peace."
Loki nodded his head before going on his way.

Mobius left the house and headed for the pickup. Before entering, he slipped a letter into the box and raised the flag, then set off for his work.

At the same time Loki decided to follow Natasha's advice and headed for New Asgard. He drove north of the small village.
The day was clear and bright, with a slight breeze.
He stopped at the small local grocery store where he knew the owners well, to buy his lunch.
He greeted them as they entered the store, "Hi Laura, hi Clint!"
"Hey Loki! Haven't seen you in a while. How are things in the Big Apple?"
Loki shrugged and replied, "Good. I'm getting my bearings little by little"
Clint asked, curious, "What are you doing here?"
"I just needed to get out of the city. Needed the fresh air, and I missed the peaceful life here."
"I hear you, I wouldn't want to come back to the city for anything in the world." replied Laura while bending down.
"What's the matter, honey?"
She stood up straight, a little girl in her arms.
"Hey Lila, how big you've gotten!" exclaimed Loki. "How old are you now?"
"Two." replied Laura. "Say hello to Loki, Lila, you like him don't you?"
"Hi Woki!" chirped the little girl and held out his arms. Loki took her in his arms and pressed a kiss on her forehead. She giggled.
They talked for a few more moments and then Loki headed for the house on the cliff.
Once there, checking first that no one was there, Loki got out of the car and walked through the forest just behind and then went for a long time to admire the lake below the cliff, the wind blowing his long black hair. As the sun began to set on the horizon, he thought it was time to go home, but didn't hurry either.
Just as he was about to get into the car, he noticed the flag raised from the mailbox. Acting on an impulse, he opened it. Inside, there was a single envelope. To his surprise, it was addressed to him.
Loki sat down in the car parked in front of the house, and began to read the letter.
I got your letter. Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?
Because, if so, I don't understand.
Loki frowned as he continued to read.
I am not the "next tenant".
There was no previous tenant.
The house has been uninhabited for over twenty years.
At first I thought maybe you had the wrong place.
But how did you know about the paw prints?
Lok was confused. He pondered for a moment, then reached into his bag to find a pen and paper.

Mobius pulled up in his pickup truck, happy to have finally finished his workday. The flag on the mailbox was up. He opened the box. A letter inside, he recognized Loki's handwriting. He looked at it as he walked along the path to the house. It was from the same address Loki had given him to forward his letter, 105 MacDougal Street - Greenwich Village.
Once inside, Mobius was startled to feel something crawl between his legs. It was the alligator that had left the pawprints. Apparently it had chosen to live here and had figured out how to get in.
Perfect! Now he would have to find out what an alligator might need.
He opened Loki's letter and began to read.

A few hours later, Mobius was waiting in front of the huge building exuding opulence and majesty, overhung by the two familiar letters, TK, Time Keepers.
He smiled as a short, dark-haired man, looking a little younger than him, stepped out.
Mobius shouted, "Casey!"
The younger man, seeing him, exclaimed, "Mobius! What the hell are you doing here? You're supposed to be busy in your little store."
Mobius replied with a smile, "I'll never be too busy to seek out an old friend and buy him a drink."
Casey answered softly, "I'm really touched."
Then Mobius added sheepishly, "I had to do something in town actually."
Casey laughed and retorted, "It's good to see you." before giving him a hug.
Over his shoulder Mobius saw a woman walk out.
Their eyes met and Mobius whispered, "Ravonna." The woman froze before continuing with a quick step. Mobius watched her go.
"Come on Casey, let's get out of here."
A little later, at a bar in Manhattan, Mobius and Casey are sitting at a table with burgers and beers.
Casey asked him, "So, how's life in your little store?"
Mobius smiled before answering, "Well, it was a challenge starting out on my own, sometimes it's frustrating depending on the clientele, but basically I..."
Casey finished his sentence, "Say no more, you're enjoying yourself."
Mobius nodded, "That's right, I'm also my own master and all in all it works out pretty well."
Casey toasted with his drink can, "I'm happy for you."
"Mind you, I bought a house.."
Casey's eyes widened, "So your business is actually doing really well."
Mobius chuckled, "I mortgaged up my underwear. But I don't regret it."
Casey took a sip of beer and asked him, "You never regretted leaving TK?"
Mobius shook his head, "Even though I know you like working there, this big conglomerate was not for me. When we wanted to create it, it was to give everyone access to quality watches at a fair price, but Ravonna got lost in the process. Does she ever ask about me?"
Casey shook his head, "She's too busy making money, and I don't think she likes me, I thought she was going to fire me today, because I didn't sell enough watches."
"Don't worry, you know her tantrums, she'll be like she used to be tomorrow."
They continued the evening, chatting happily.
Mobius offered to drop Casey off at his house before heading home.
"If you don't mind, I'd just like to mail a letter before I leave."
He parked his pickup around the street corner and walked, looking for an address.
He said aloud, "105 MacDougal Street - Greenwich Village."
Casey, who had followed him, asked, "What is it?"
Mobius looked around, puzzled, and replied, "I'm not sure."
"Who lives there?" inquired Casey, curious.
"I don't really know."
Mobius checked three times, but he was in the right place. Except there was only a recently dug foundation, no habitable building.
He took the piece of paper out of his pocket. The last letter from Loki. The return address was correct: 105 MacDougal Street - Greenwich Village
Mobius stared at the letter because he noticed something odd. It was dated March 31, 2021.

Loki walked through the hallways of the school, examining the new letter from Mobius.
There must be a mistake, I tried to mail the letter in person, but there is no habitation at this address, it's just a foundation.
And the date is wrong too.
Loki, annoyed, scribbled a note and as soon as class was over, he went to put the letter in the box.

In the house on the cliff, Mobius was reading the last letter received in his kitchen, leaning against the counter.
I received your last letter.
I don't know if you will get the answer, but I want to get to the bottom of it.
By the way, for some reason the mail is not getting through to me. I still have to drive here to get it.
Anyway, all this to say that I didn't make a mistake with the address.
I know where I live thanks!  Ok, it's ugly, but it's not a foundation either.
And I'm not stupid either, it's 2021.
Mobius laughed at what seemed to him to be a foolish joke and continued reading.
Just out of curiosity: what year do you think it is?

On his couch with a glass of wine in hand, Loki studies Mobius' latest note.
It's 2019
SO PLEASE STOP BULLSHITTING ME.
Loki laughed, incredulous. Croki looked at him.
He patted his head while thinking, before getting up and walking over to his dresser and from a drawer he pulled out a shoebox full of pictures.
He began to rummage through the photos. He came across a photo he had forgotten about, him as a younger man with his then girlfriend, Sigyn. They were in each other's arms, laughing, in love.
He looked at it for a second, then put it away and continued searching.
He finally found the photo he was looking for. It showed Loki and others, outside at night, wearing T-shirts and jeans, with snow falling around them.
He turned it over. On the back is a date printed by the developer: APRIL 3, 2019.

The wind was blowing hard when Mobius arrived home to find the flag on the mailbox raised. Inside was a new letter from Loki. He picked it up and ran across the road, because the sky was really starting to darken.
While preparing his meal, he read the letter.
Since you don't believe me, I'll give you a little warning.
There was a bad flu in the spring of 2019.
I remember it because it snowed suddenly in early April and for a long time.
After that, everyone got sick.
Mobius rolled his eyes and looked at the calendar, today was April 2.
He continued to read.
So, my mysterious pen pal, if you really are where... or when... you say you are...
I hope you are getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of herbal tea and eating fruit to store vitamins.
Warm milk with honey is also effective. And above all, cover yourself well.
Mobius chuckled, "Snow, right."
He crumpled up the letter and went to throw it away.
As he opened the trash can, he suddenly began to sneeze.
After a few seconds, the realization fell on him and he turned back to the bay window.
A magnificent sight was displayed before his eyes, although the beauty left him indifferent, so shocked was he by the implication of what he saw.
It was snowing heavily.
Stunned by both the cold that was coming on and what had just happened, he went to bed and slept like a log.
The next morning, he went to the snow-covered mailbox, and after struggling with the flap, he quickly slipped in a letter and closed the box, almost as if he was afraid it would bite him. He pulled up the red flag.

Same day - 2021
Loki opened the box, took out the letter from Mobius and then lowered the flag.
He pulled out the letter, which had only one line.
CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?
Loki, with trembling hands, took a pen and answered, then put the letter in the box and raised the flag.
Same day, same place - 2019
Mobius stared at the snow-covered box whose flag had just been lowered and it began to scare him a little. Shaken by a sneeze he rolled into a ball and when he raised his head he saw that the flag was up again. He took a step backwards but after a few moments, curiosity being the strongest, he opened the mailbox with great hesitation and took out... his note. The same as the one he had just put there. Slightly disappointed, but also reassured, he sighed and relaxed.
But when he opened the note, he gasped.
CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?
YES.

April 5, 2021
Loki returned home, a little dazed.
Sensing that something was wrong with his owner, Croki followed him into the living room.
Loki took him in his arms and placed him next to him on the sofa. Croki put his head on Loki's knee and Loki patted his head absentmindedly.
Then Loki took a paper and began to write.
April 5, 2019
Mobius was on his bed, surrounded by used handkerchiefs and still having trouble believing the letter from Loki that had just arrived in the box.
The alligator, that had really taken up residence in his house, was lying at the foot of his bed.
I don't know about you, but I don't even know the right questions to ask. Can you tell me something that might shed some light?
Mobius wandered around the house, thinking, trying to find a connection, when he arrived at the front door and saw the alligator's tracks in front of the door.
He grabbed a piece of paper from the phone and scribbled quickly.
I think we have the same pet.
Let's do a little test, so that we don't always have to wait for the other to answer, let's meet on April 7th at 10am in front of the mailbox.
He went to put the letter in the mailbox. He raised the flag and went home to crawl under his comforter, exhausted by his cold and the emotions.
April 6, 2021
Loki got up early to drive to the house on the cliff, hoping that his mysterious pen pal had answered him.
His heart pounding, he saw the flag raised and ran to the box, opened it and grasped the small piece of paper with trembling fingers.
He answered and put the note in the mailbox.
Is it a dwarf alligator?

April 7, 2019/2021 - 10:00 am
This is how, two years apart, an extraordinary letter exchange began, punctuated by the movement of a small flag on a mailbox.
M: Hello and yes it is an alligator.
L: Does it rub against your legs as soon as you come in and follow you around until it gets fed.
M: Yes.
L: I named him Croki.
Mobius looked at Croki at his feet and said, "Nice to meet you, Croki."
The little alligator rubbed at his feet as if it understood.
L: Perhaps we could introduce ourselves properly.
I'm Loki, you know that, and I've just arrived as a literature teacher in an institute for extraordinary students.
M: My name is Mobius. I make and repair antique watches. I have a little store called Miss Minute. This is the mascot of my store.
Loki giggled when he read the name of the store and saw the little drawing next to it. A small watch straight out of a 1950s design. It was actually kind of cute.
He took on a serious look as he read the following words.
M: Okay. I'm still trying to figure that out. If two years from now you're living in a building at 105 MacDougal Street - Greenwich Village... that doesn't exist yet... where are you, uh, "now" in 2019?
L: I'm studying for my PhD in literature at the Brooklyn College of the Arts.
Loki stopped writing and looked around before continuing.
L: And now I'm corresponding in an extremely weird way with someone I've never met. Too, too , too weird!!!
M: What's it like in 2021?
L: It's great. Everyone is driving around in flying cars. We all wear metal colored suits and we all have super powers.
Mobius smiled at the joke before continuing to read.
L: Actually nothing has really changed. No. We're moving to 5G and Samsung and Apple are still competing as much as ever.
I'm going to have to leave, I have class this afternoon. I won't be able to make it for three days, my next day off.
But... one thing worries me. What if, by sending these letters, by communicating in this way, we are accidentally altering the course of time itself, thus changing human history forever?
Mobius reflected for a moment before answering.
M: You're right, let's not do that.
Mobius posted the letter and went into the house, Croki as usual rubbed at his feet and started following him around.
"Croki! That's enough!"
He took the alligator in his arms and placed it next to where it used to eat. "You wait here and stop following me."
For three days he repeated the same trick several times until Croki quietly waited actually near his bowl. He gave him a small piece of fresh fish to congratulate him, "Good boy.
Despite what they seemed to have decided, he then wrote a small note and went to put it in the mailbox, which he raised the flag. He just hoped that Loki would still come and check.
April 10, 2021
Loki read the letter again as he entered his apartment, having understood absolutely nothing.
Sorry, I did change one little thing.
Loki closed the door and while he expected to be almost knocked over by Croki who always came to slip between his legs, nothing.
He went to the kitchen and was surprised to see Croki waiting for him next to his eating place.
No need to thank me.
Loki laughed out loud in a way he hadn't in a long time.

The next day, sitting in class waiting for the next students, he was still wondering how he could thank Mobius.
When suddenly appeared shyly on the doorstep, Kamala.
Which was strange, because the bubbly girl was anything but shy, and especially not with him.
Surprisingly, since she knew that he specialized in Norse mythology, she had become attached to him and it was not uncommon for her to linger at the end of a class to discuss with him some point of her reading on the subject.
Natasha and Loki's colleagues had told him that this was the first time since Kamala had arrived that someone had managed to channel her energy.
"Ahem Professor... Loki?" she wore her strange oversized red scarf as always.
"Loki will be enough as always, Kamala." replied Loki softly to her.
"Come in."
She walked over and put something on his desk.
"Um... I wanted to thank you, because you always take the time to answer me no matter when I come and no matter what my question is, so I made you this little something myself."
Loki, touched, unwrapped the small package, he took out a green scarf, obviously hand-knitted, whose workmanship looked a bit like the one the girl was wearing all the time.
He looked up and said in a soft voice tightened by emotion, "Thank you Kamala, that's very thoughtful of you."
"You're welcome! See you later." She left as always with her bouncy step.
Loki contemplated the scarf for long minutes, it had been a long time since anyone had had such a thoughtful gesture for him, and especially for something he had done.
"Congratulations professor."
He looked up at the owner of the voice that had pulled him out of his thoughts.
It was the gym teacher, Thor.
"What?"
"You are one of the chosen few who have the privilege of being among the people Kamala respects the most. She only gives this kind of personal gift to people she holds in high regard."
"Oh..."
Thor leaned against the doorframe.
"I came to invite you for tonight. We're having a movie night with colleagues, the ones you know, at the Bi-frost. Interested?"
A while ago, Loki would have refused, but tonight, perhaps because of Mobius or thanks to him, he decided to accept.
"I'll come, thanks for having thought of me. What movie?"
"You've got mail. After class we'll meet at the door and go together."
A few hours later, they were discussing the movie over beers and burgers. There was Heimdall, Thor, Bruce, Carol and even Natasha the principal.
Carol laughed at the main characters, "Honestly, it's really stupid this match,
falling in love over words, I'd go to her as soon as I knew who she was."
Loki squeezed Mobius' last letter into his pocket before speaking, "I find there is something pure about it. A correspondence, free from social barriers, appearances, free from the past...no need to worry about details. There's something exciting about it."
Loki didn't realize that they were all looking at him, surprised to see him showing so much passion.
Thor elbowed him, "Do you have someone in your life Lokes?"
"Hm?"
Natasha looked at him knowingly, "It's hard not to notice that you're writing or reading letters all the time."
Loki blushed slightly, "It's not that kind of relationship, although it's true I've never met him."
"Why?" asked Carol, curious.
"Let's just say it's... complicated."
Seeing that Loki didn't feel like talking about it, the others changed the subject and they continued to have a pleasant evening.
As he left for home later, Loki felt a pleasant warmth. For the first time in a long time, he no longer felt lonely.
He pulled Kamala's scarf tighter around his neck in the cool spring evening. Suddenly he knew how to do something for Mobius.
The next morning, he went to clothing stores in search of what he had in mind.
Three hours later, at the house on the cliff, he put a letter in the mailbox with a small package. He raised the little flag and headed back to town.
April 12, 2021
Mobius had just gotten up, and like every morning since the beginning of this strange correspondence, he went to check for mail and was pleasantly surprised to see the little flag up.
He returned a little later with a letter and a small package.
He opened the package and took out a black scarf adorned with small silver watches. He put it around his neck and sat down with a coffee in his armchair and started to read the letter.
Thank you for educating my little Croki. Here is a little gift to thank you.
Put this on and don't take it off for the rest of the month. It will be cold until the end of April.
Mobius tightened the scarf around his neck and smiled softly.
Mobius, I don't know if what we're doing will change the course of time, but what I am sure of is that it is affecting my life in a positive way, so I don't want to stop.
This connection I have with you has allowed me to reach out to others and for the first time since I left home, I don't feel lonely anymore.
I don't want to stop.
But if you want to, I will, all you have to to is to let me know about it.
In 3 days at 7am I'll come for your answer.
