“oi, be careful with that thing,” levi says to hange, but they completely ignore him and continue to handle the instrument with frenzied interest, studying every component up-close and fiddling with its mechanics.

it’s not every day — at least not before you arrived in paradis with yelena and the others — that you see someone so in awe of the technology you’ve grown accustomed to and use regularly. it makes you nostalgic, in a way, seeing hange so amazed by the camera and all its intricate features, as it reminds you of when you first saw one.

“wow,” hange breathes, probably the only thing they’ve said that isn’t mumbled, unintelligible word vomit. “wow, this is just– wow!”

you giggle at their reaction as they take one last look over the camera before handing it back to you, a greater level of care and respect in their hold than before.

the way they phrase it makes you smile, not bothering to correct them since it’s so endearing and instead just nodding. hange is already by the chair, gesturing to it for levi to sit in. he glares and slaps their hands away, telling them to sit in it. hange teases him about having a complex but complies anyway. you laugh at the scene inwardly while you set the camera on its tripod and readjust its mechanisms. in your peripheral vision, you see hange in the chair, rambling to levi — who’s standing awkwardly behind them — about how they should sit and what expression they should make. you smile and continue to make adjustments; turning the dial, tweaking the aperture, checking the eyepiece. once you’re sure that everything is calibrated, you straighten up.

“okay. please be as still as possible for at least eight seconds,” you announce.

hange sits up. “wait, wait! eight seconds? why is that?”

you’re a little caught off guard by their questions. usually people just nod and do as they’re told because ‘you’re the expert here’ but you admire their curiosity. “um, the camera has a slow shutter speed,” you answer, lightly tapping the lens, “so the photograph will be blurry if you move.”

hange frowns in thought. “what happens if i move on accident? what if i need to sneeze? what if– hey! maybe if you could make a quicker ‘shutter speed’–” they gasp. “or maybe if there was a way to allow it to capture movement–”

“focus, four-eyes,” levi snaps at them, “and quit fidgeting or else the photograph will be shitty.”

hange is by your side in a flash and levi has to catch their chair as it’s almost knocked back from how suddenly they leap out of it. “is it done? can i see?” hange pesters eagerly, hovering over your shoulder and trying to catch a glimpse of the photo. levi follows after them, but stands to the side, waiting.

you laugh. “ah, no, it’s not ready yet,” you tell them. “it needs to be exposed to light for a minute or so before i remove it, and then it’ll take some time to develop, and after that, some more time to print... it’s, uh– it’s quite the tedious process, really.” instead of the typical confused or dumbfounded expression you’re used to, you see admiration and wonder and bewilderment, like hange wants to hear you keep talking, to tell them more about photo production — and that’s when you get an idea.

“actually,” you say, meeting their keen eyes, “i can show you, if you’d like?” they just stare at you, expressionless. “um, it’s– it’s time-consuming so i understand if you don’t want to stay for the whole process–”

Making Kasumi's Rifle from Persona 5 Royal

Here's a process log of making Violet's gun from Persona 5 Royal for my cosplay!

To start with, I looked up a bunch of pictures and combed through gameplay footage to try to find good reference pictures of her gun. The best reference turned out to be pictures of Amakuni's scale figure that included her gun since the photos had clear shots of the gun from the side.

2. Then I made a pattern in Photoshop by tracing a picture of the gun from the figure and printed it out at the scale that I wanted it to be. To size it accurately to my proportions, I used nifegun.com.

3. After that, I cut out 3 layers of 5mm foam for the main part of the gun and 3 layers of 3mm foam for the lever/trigger section. Here I had them pinned together so I could double check the thickness/scale before gluing it all together. (I didn't take a picture of this part, but I also carved out space inside the gun to fit two small PVC pipes taped on top of each other to make the barrel on the inside and to give the floppy EVA foam a stable core.)

4. I glued it all together with contact cement. Here I also used a dremel to carve an indent into the side of the barrel at the front end. I also tested the primer I was planning to use (black Plastidip) on the lever/trigger part at the bottom.

5. Ignore how crusty everything looks here LOL but this is the part where I experimented a lot on how to smooth out the seams on the top, front, and bottom of the gun. I'm not 100% happy with the level of smoothness I ended up with, but this was a last minute 1-week build before a con so I settled with a couple layers.

First I tried foam clay but had a lot of trouble sanding it because the brand I bought was super cheap/sticky and would not dry. Then I moved on to wood filler, which was slightly better and actually sandable but I still wasn't really liking the gritty texture. So as a last resort I ended up using Bondo glazing putty (which is super toxic and not fun to be around--wear a respirator!) since it's my go-to when I'm working with 3D printed props. Bondo ended up working the best, but I still want to keep experimenting with other less-toxic methods for future foam props...

I also added some more panels here on top and on the sides to add some dimension.

6. I spray painted the gun black and brown and added googly eyes for rivet-like details.

7. Finished the gun by adding all the rest of the details! Glued a black plastic gem onto the front of the barrel with hot glue for the front sight, bought some brass embellishments like the little framing piece on the stock and the metal rivet on the forestock, and hand-painted the filigree on the side of the gun with a gold paint pen.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it came out considering it was a one-week build and my first ever gun prop! This is also the second foam prop I've made, and I feel like I learned a lot from the process.

If I ever remake it, I'd really like to add a hinge to the lever to make it functional like it is in the game like in her introduction where she spins it by pulling the lever down. I'd also probably give myself like a month or more to work on it instead of a single week LOL I got so many mosquito bites from working on this in my hot garage at night in the summer 〒▽〒

Candace Owens is descending into pure wingnuttery before our very eyes. Last week she declared that there is a secret "Jewish Gang" in Hollywood committing horrifying acts on people and now she's really really descending into Alex Jones territory by declaring that Brigitte Macron is secretly a trans woman, no I'm not kidding.

I'm not familiar enough with Candace Owens to know if this kind of brilliant insight is the norm for her, however I'd just like to state for the record that if Candace Owens is always this insane you'll be seeing a lot more of her on the blog. Lets get into it, strap in folks because this is truly one of the most insane things that I have ever covered on this blog.

03:00, Candace Owens: "So let me tell you about how I happened upon this story. There was just an article that was published in the Daily Mail, here is the headline. 'The proof France's first lady wasn't born a man'."

Here's the full headline that Candace displayed on her show. It seems like she suffers from selective eyesight and could only make out the words "France's first lady" and "born a man".

Yeah, you really shouldn't display an article debunking a conspiracy theory up on the screen before promoting that exact same conspiracy theory as a 100% factually accurate bombshell. This is just pure laziness.

03:15, Candace Owens: "So I of course instantly read it because what a bizarre thing that you need to provide proof that Brigitte Macron was not born a man. And embedded within the article they showed two photos and I'm going to show you right now. This is the first photo, this is allegedly Brigitte Macron when she was a little girl sitting on her moms lap but when I saw this photo the first thing I noticed was that the person on the far left, the boy, that actually looks like Brigitte Macron."

Ok, so Candaces brilliant evidence for her theory that's supposed to prove to me that Brigitte Macron is trans is....that Brigitte has a familial resemblance to her brother.

I'm not sure if Candace realizes this but there's this thing called "genetics" that also explains why Brigitte's brother looks similar to her. Does Candace just assume that every woman who has a brother is secretly trans because that woman's brother brother looks kind of similar to her? I am honestly floored that a grown woman is floating this junk as a serious possibility.

If you're reading this and you take the Daily Wire seriously, consider this your wakeup call because this might take the crown for the stupidest video I have seen in my lifetime. Also, here's the photo in case you're curious.

No it doesn't. In what world does this look like a newer photograph?

Think about it this way, if Brigitte Macron was a trans male that would have left a paper trail. If Macron met her as a female, which by all means he did, then Brigitte would have transitioned before she became a teacher. Surely this would be documented somewhere. She presumably went through some training to become a teacher, maybe there would be records of her attending college there pre-transition.

Also, if Brigitte is indeed trans like Candace is speculating here, the amount of effort it would take to cover this up would be insane. It's totally unrealistic. Too bad the cover-up got exposed by Candace Owens noticing that Brigitte looks kind of similar to her brother!

04:34, Candace Owens: "So the quote-on-quote 'conspiracy theory' is actually a three year thorough investigation that was conducted by journalists that were working with genealogists. It was published in six issues in Faits Et Documents, I'm sorry my French is not that good but yes, they published six issues unpacking what they had discovered after a three year investigation."

Faits Et Documents (Facts And Documents in English) is absolutely not a credible source of information. It's essentially an Infowars-esque far-right magazine that regularly goes on antisemitic tirades about how Jewish people and freemasons control the world. It claims that it's the only French publication to deal with "masonic meetings".

The person who founded it is named Emmanuel Rattier and he is, in the kindest terms, an antisemitic raving lunatic. For a while Rattier worked as the "occult editorial advisor" at Kontre Kulture. Kontre Kulture is a publishing house that has unapologetically republished things like The International Jew, an antisemitic propaganda piece published by Henry Ford in the 1920's that Adolf Hitler himself praised.

Rattier's own publication has also published antisemitic screeds and generally engaged in crazed behavior. Rattier apparently would send his underlings to infiltrate freemason meetings, presumably in the hope that they would discover an occult conspiracy.

The article that Candace links is essentially a blog summarizing Fait Et Documents "findings". It was written by a guy named Lionel Labosse. Here's how he describes himself.

"My interest for this investigation comes from converging coincidences. On the one hand, I am an anti-communist from the beginning. I started the series of now 11 articles chronicling national-covidism at the beginning of March 2020; secondly, I subscribe to Faits & Documents, so I didn't waste time wondering if it was a serious journal; thirdly, I am altersexual (a word of my own invention), so this investigation was particularly relevant to me, and I was relatively expert in this field, and able to distinguish between what falls under transphobia and homophobia, and what falls under the public interest."

So this guy, who is a self-described "anti-communist" subscriber of Fait Et Documents and has written numerous articles concerning something that he calls "national-covidism" is the writer of this post. Don't worry though guys, he's altersexual, which by the way is absolutely not a term that he coined, so he's able to parse through what's transphobic and what's of public interest. I don't see how you can read that and not see the writings of a raving lunatic. Candace Owens however seems to find this all very compelling.

The "genealogist" isn't even a licensed genealogist. His name is Alain Beyrand and he's a self-proclaimed "amateur genealogist".

What he did to merit the description of "genealogist" remains a mystery to me and everyone else in the reality-based community.

The two "journalists" who were involved in this investigation are Xavier Poussard and Natacha Rey. Now, there isn't much information about these two on the internet so I'm only going by what I could scrape together in what amounts to a Google investigation of a bunch of documents written in French conducted in the hallowed hall of journalism that is my tiny apartment. From the looks of it, Xavier is the publishing director for Faits Et Documents and he's also an occult obsessed weirdo, as is Natalie. In the document that Candace Owens cites, he delivers some truly crazed analysis of Brigitte and Emmanuel's wedding.

Of course, how could I not have realized that because Emmanuel Macron wore a pink tie to his wedding and their wedding cake had candles on it, him and his wife are secretly satanists....and his wife is trans. This is all very sane and non-transphobic by the way. God, these people are so profoundly stupid and bigoted.

So, Candace's source of information is a completely insane blog sourced from a completely insane magazine that's obsessed with wingnut satanic conspiracy theories. If I was Ben Shapiro, Candace would be fired so fast that her head would spin.

They've also published that Emmanuel Macron wearing a pink tie is somehow proof that he's a satanist. As I said prior, the people writing this are clearly completely insane.

05:04, Candace Owens: "Their theory is that the first lady, Brigitte Macron, was actually born Jean-Michelle. So Brigitte is actually Jean-Michelle. Jean-Michelle lived as a man for thirty years, fathered five children, OK? And then transitioned at the age of thirty to become Brigitte."

Ok genius, who was the mother? It's not like Brigitte just planted child seeds in the front yard and the next day a kid sprouted out of the ground, someone had to have carried those children. Who was that person?! The timeline doesn't make sense, the missing child on the lap doesn't make sense, none of this makes sense!

05:26, Candace Owens: "Now, I'm just gonna show you this before and after photo, just right here. They actually used as a part of their investigation, Chinese software. Uh, and this is a side by side. It is such a dead wringer, it's crazy to me that you would not say that these two individuals look alike."

Here's the picture Candace shows. Lets unpack this:

Alright, so we've got a part in the hair that looks kind of similar and a facial structure that can basically be explained by the fact that Brigitte is related to her brother. The hair part in particular makes absolutely zero sense. It doesn't even look that similar and guess what, hair styles aren't inherently coded into our biology. Hair can be styled and parted in different ways and there are probably hundreds if not thousands of people out there with similar hair to me. Plus, your hair looks way after you've aged over 50 years.

Hinging your entire conspiracy theory on "Well, this person looks vaguely similar to her brother" is so stupid. Also, if you look really closely you'll notice that the eye colors are different. I guess she just found a way to magically change her eye color for....cosmetic reasons?

05:52, Candace Owens: "Now, I will tell you why this has legs and why I'm going to encourage you to read the very long document that I read which we will include in the link in bio."

I am absolutely horrified that Candace Owens basically ensured that a legion of people will believe that Brigitte Macron is a transgender satanist because she has a familial resemblance to her brother and Emmanuel Macron wore a pink tie to his wedding (which Candace strangely enough doesn't mention, TieGate remains uninvestigated and must be exposed to the world at large!).

06:00, Candace Owens: "The first obvious thing, first obvious reason, that I am very much believing what they have published is that the first lady is simply unable to produce any photos of herself throughout the first thirty years of her life."

Well, she did. Unfortunately in Candace's opinion those are faked so I guess Brigitte technically hasn't produced any photos of herself in the Candace-verse. The thing is that no matter how many photos Brigitte produces, these guys are always going to find some hair tuft that looks kind of similar to her brothers and declare that photo as more proof for their insane theory.

06:46, Candace Owens: "Instead, the only photos they have produced that are circling in the media are the photos that I just showed you and as I said, the first photo, she looks more like the Jean-Michelle who she claims is actually her brother, who she won't just present to the public."

The notion that Brigitte Macron has the obligation to "produce" her brother because of Candace Owens and some insane blog is completely ridiculous.

And even if she did, Candace would probably just say that he's a paid actor and keep pushing this theory. All of Candace's evidence is "Oh, well there's no evidence that she isn't trans". By that logic I could say that a lizard person has possessed Candace Owens and when she protests go "Oh, yeah? Well show me the proof that you're aren't possessed by a lizard person".

07:20, Candace Owens: "So, Jean-Michelle existed for thirty years, according to the genealogist, ok? And then Jean-Michelle stops existing and Brigitte exists, but Brigitte doesn't exist for the first thirty years, ok?"

If Candace or Alain the amateur genealogist can provide any proof of these people vanishing and appearing from and into existence, I'd be happy to review it. Until then there's absolutely no proof of any of this outside of "I said so!"

07:29, Candace Owens: "The second photo, the one that I said to you looked a little too recent for an alleged 70 year old, well yeah they were able to debunk that. That's actually a photo of her daughter. Her daughter Tiphaine, you can see now side by side. Of course that is her daughter, it's a dead wringer for her daughter. So why would you colorize a photo and make it black and white and try to pass it as yourself when it is in fact your daughter?"

Woah, a daughter looks like her mother, that's never happened before. Must be a conspiracy! Also, I guess Brigitte (who is secretly Jean-Michelle) is the first transgender woman to have given birth because that's the only way to explain how she has a daughter in the first place.

God, this is so monumentally stupid.

08:06, Candace Owens: "Here's the second reason that I would say, major red flags. Rather than just producing what should be ample evidence of your existence for the first thirty years of your life, they're suing. Yes, the first lady actually sued two of the journalists who were involved in producing the story."

The people that Brigitte Macron sued were Natacha Rey (told you we'd come back to her!) and Amandine Roy. They got sued for producing a four hour video alleging that Brigitte is secretly trans.

This story gets even stranger when you look into Amandine Roy because apparently she's a self-described clairvoyant and Amandine Roy isn't actually her name, not even joking. Her real name is actually Delphine Jegousse and this isn't the first time she's gotten in trouble with the French government.

In early 2023, the office of the President of the Republic filed a complaint against Roy for posting drawings depicting Macron wearing a Nazi uniform on Twitter. It seems like this woman can't stop getting dragged to court for defamation. She was hit with a fine for the stuff about Brigette being trans but I couldn't find anything about the Hitler drawing. Regardless, these two people are clearly as nuts as some of the other characters who are central figures in this conspiracy theory.

Also, a lawsuit is actually really unhelpful to the conspiracy narrative because a lawsuit would force Brigitte to prove that she isn't trans. If there is indeed this massive lack of evidence of Brigitte being born a woman and she wants to cover that up for.....whatever reason, her taking this to court is probably one of the worst decisions that she could make.

08:32, Candace Owens: "Something to note is what exactly Brigitte is suing for. She's suing them for 'violation of privacy and fundamental personal rights' plus 'illicit use of her image'. But what does that mean? That doesn't mean anything."

I don't really know much about French law and neither does Candace Owens. However, they definitely did use her image illicitly judging from the information I could find about privacy laws in France. In France, people have the exclusive right to their own image. What this means in simple terms is that you are in full control of the redistribution and use of pictures that are taken of you and if somebody uses a picture of you without your consent you can sue because in France that's considered a violation of your privacy.

I figured this out in the roughly five seconds it took me to Google "right of image, France" and the two minutes it took me to read an article on a public service website. If I can do that on my budget of zero dollars, Candace Owens can do that with the massive budget that the Daily Wire provides for her.

09:06, Candace Owens: "Now, the two journalists being sued by the way are Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey and they were eventually punished with symbolic fines for, I guess, invading the privacy of the first lady. It's gonna get even crazier though because journalists that worked on this case were also threatened. They sent the police to threaten them while they were conducting research. Natacha Rey, the woman that was punished with a symbolic fine, as she was conducting research she reached out to somebody to ask questions about the first ladies upbringing, the first 30 years of the first ladies life. And then what happened as she was examining these inconsistencies in the story was the police burst into her home on July 13th, 2021. They then took her into custody, without being summoned, on the pretext of a complaint that was filed by one of the individuals that she had reached out to."

There are two places where I have heard this claim being made.

1): The Candace Owens Show

2): The blog that Candace links that also claims that Macron wearing a pink tie is a sign that he's a satanist. The blog also doesn't provide any evidence that this arrest actually took place. How do I know that Candace got this from the blog? Because she basically read what the blog said verbatim.

Unless there's hard evidence that any of this took place, I'm throwing this in the bullshit pile.

10:40, Candace Owens: "They similarly arrested a man named Éric Verhaeghe, another journalist working on the story. Similarly had no charges, they just wanted to question him."

Candace left the a couple parts out of this. Such as the part where Eric Verhaeghe is a writer for the Russian state funded propaganda outlet RT and unapologetically repeated a Russian state TV outlets claims that Donald Trump's "secret file" contained dirt of Brigette Macron. If this guy doesn't have Russian asset written all over him I don't know who does.

If this alleged arrest did actually occur, it was most likely because this guy works for Russian state media and was spreading disinformation about a prominent politician. Plus, even in his story it's not like anything really came of it. He was arrested and then let out, allowed to carry on his investigation as if nothing happened. If the French government really wanted to suppress this story, surely they wouldn't have let him out.

11:21, Candace Owens: "What keeps happening throughout the years of her being the first lady, so since 2017, every time the first lady tells a story about herself in her childhood the math doesn't quite math, right? For example, she recalled living alone in the United States during Neil Armstrongs moon landing in 1969. The only problem is that she would've been just sixteen years old."

What a shock, a 70 year old woman doesn't have a perfect memory of every detail in her life. My grandmother fully believes that she was able to drive stick, the only problem is that my three uncles and my father all have told me that she never touched a manual transmission in her life. Your memory starts to go when you're older.

Conclusion:

Somehow, that was even dumber than I expected. One thing it was thought was an absolutely wild ride. I expected things like the photos, what I didn't expect was a conspiracy theory declaring that candles and pink ties are satanic that was written by a raging antisemite being used as a primary source and one of their other primary sources being a guy who works for RT.

Also, I've never seen pictures of Candace Owens as a kid. Clearly this means that she's transgender. It's even though because she's never seen pictures of me as a kid meaning that I'm a transwoman. All this theory proves is that the right is rehashing conspiracy theories that weren't even that good to begin with, is Michelle Obama still a man? I guess so. Everyone that Candace Owens doesn't like is trans, which naturally makes all those people that much cooler in my eyes.

Mienfoo Postmortem

Real excited about this: I finally got that time lapse thing to work in Aseprite! It turned out to be super easy with the things I learned from the Buizel animation. There's some parts where I was playing with different palettes and the gif goes mostly black and I couldn't figure out how to get those parts to display properly without hand-editing each one of them, but other than that it's pretty cool. Thing for next time, I guess?

I think I'm getting pretty good at finding a process that works for me. One cool thing I've been able to do recently is, like what I did with the arms, putting little placeholder shapes in so I can visualize where a thing is gonna be and then working towards that. Idk where I started doing that, I guess I just did it a little bit and then more and more on each subsequent piece and I'm starting to get pretty good at it; I think!

You see me do a few things in there like I tried to make the eye in vain before I got a real start with the head, I could do things more efficiently in places like there. Speaking of heads, I'm getting pretty good at these musteline heads! "Sneasel and Mienfoo have two different head types;" they're surprisingly really similar and I feel a lot more appreciative of the pokemon designers skills… at design!

Idk, it's not 100% accurate of a head to the official design and you can see me try to correct that a bit in the timelapse, but what I got feels really nice and has a certain- hmm, idk, je ne sais quoi, lol. It just comes across as a mildly different artstyle, I think.

The left leg kinda looks weird, I think? I didn't really have any idea of where the underlying knee bones are on Mienfoo to really match it up with my reference photo (I was gonna link it; it was on pinterest which I don't really like and the link is now dead, so I guess it's not important anyway). Also the neck band is kinda weird, but it looks OK.

The tail, lol, I kinda panicked because I almost forgot it, I think you even see me put in a little shading before I start on the tail. I struggled with it a bit before my pea-brain made the connection that it was kinda like the ribbon feelers on my Sylveon piece and I just took the end of a ribbon from there and chiseled away and added to it, lmao. I think, on the Sylveon piece, my brain was truly firing on all pistons with those ribbons.

I think the art journals have run their course, I've internalized a lot of the stuff I would've written down in there like, "You can draw lines with the line tool" or "this sucks, but maybe It'll get better :)" so I don't think I'll be doing those that much if at all. But I guess doing a little post-mortem longer than the main post is a fair substitute, lol!

Also, I think this might be the last piece of art I'm sharing this year (maybe making if I don't get my ducks in a row). And what a year it has been! ~47 pieces according to my archive on imgur. That's 47 more pieces than I did last year! I don't think I'm gonna do a recap of this year of art until whenever it was I posted that Gastly art and then, for "accounting purposes," I'll do recaps at the ends of years after that.

Look at me making big, multi-year plans :3. I really wanna stick around and I hope anyone following me wherever does too! Thank you for a- ok, well; it could've been better mental-health-wise and things still feel pretty rough, but I'm getting it figured out- great year! you are correct about me having a wide musical palate...so it actually took me a while until I could really think of a genre I didn't like...but you know what? Fuck dubstep. Stupidest genre on earth. It's funny to listen to ironically if you want to LARP as a 12-year-old boy doing a Minecraft outro, I suppose, but genuinely? Genuinely? I think the genre is almost irredeemable, perhaps even evil. and this is coming from someone that generally enjoys quite a lot of loud "bad" music.

2. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS REAL! I'm genuinely using up a high amount of my brain capacity trying to think about this. I'll be putting the rest of my response under a read more because I will be including photos of the birds ^_^.

TORI! he would obviously be a smaller bird...but it's hard to really find a species that feels right for him.

Hmm. I think in terms of general energy, he reminds me of a (pink-breasted) robin. whenever I see photos of robins I always laugh. I cannot really word what about them looks so deeply stupid and special...perhaps their faces, especially their eyes, read weirdly human to me in the sense that they oftentimes look quite serious or domineering despite their stupidly small stature.

essentially, they are very cute, but it's impossible not to laugh at them mockingly at least a little bit. which goes along well with how I feel about tori.

YUZURU! For some reason, my first thought was the jaybird family? Do you see it. Do you understand...perhaps an island-scrub jay, or even the fancier black-throated magpie-jay. I'm still not sure if I can 100% confirm, but these birds are just oddly Yuzuru-shaped to me. They also have beautiful dark blue feathers...I'm quite fond of them.

EICHI! This is another interesting one. My instinctual response was the mute swan. they are well-loved as symbols of elegance, gracefulness, light & love, but they also have a long-running old wives' tale reputation of being powerful and vicious (mostly because they're very protective of their partners and cygnets).

There's a pretty famous saying that you should steer clear of swans because they're powerful enough to break your arm, and though there may be a few (rare) accounts of swans going beyond usual intimidation tactics, they definitely do not go around breaking random people's arms...so...swan mischaracterization is real? SAD! This happened to my buddy Eichi.

Though, oddly enough, I think Eichi can also be somewhat dove-like at times? It's a high honour to award from me, Dove ceramicdove, but I can see an air of doveness in him at times. Perhaps a ringneck (they are on the smaller, "scrawnier" side, but they are very endearing to me). Or a seraphim pigeon.

Ultimately, however, I think I'll leave it off at the mute swan!

WATARU! Saving the little birthday princess for last (even though his birthday already ended, but it doesn't matter. every day is his birthday to me). Everyone already associates him with doves and pigeons, but I feel like he's versatile enough to fit the bill for multiple birds.

Sometimes he has the airs of the Indian peacock...sometimes, something like a garden fantail dove...I've heard that some of the CN fandom associates him with geese because he's big and loud, which is very funny and endearing to me, so I'm adding geese to the list in honour of that. I ALSO THINK HE COULD BE A BIT PARROT-LIKE but I'm not at all well-versed in parrots...!

I think there can be more answers to this question than the ones I gave, but I still tried to be accurate! Thank you for giving me this opportunity...the reason why it took me so long to answer this was because, as I was looking for photos and species and such, I kept going down accidental rabbitholes and reading all sorts of articles and posts about birds...but I have reached the end!

Also, I think birds already come in many beautiful colours, but I wish there were more blue and silver birds...iridescent is not a colour, but more types of iridescent birds would be awesome.

Building Block Figs - Beautiful Fight Scene in the Middle of the Lake (Part 2)

Following up on yesterday's long post, today I am finally showing off the actual assembled pics of these figs!

You may have also noticed I have renamed these two posts, to be the actual (very long) MTL name from the original sales listing. I think of this scene as the "Bedema Lake" scene from the original fan fig that was sold with this name. A sharp eyed friend of mine told me today that the MTL for "Bedema Lake" is less likely to refer to an actual location, and more likely a clever reference to the Word of Honor Concert. 贝德玛, which Google renders as "Bedema" is Bèi dé mǎ, the Chinese transliteration for Bioderma, the French micellar water makeup remover (which is in my cabinet right at this moment, actually, it's great stuff!). One of the MCs during the concert made a joke about the lake scene being a "makeup remover lake" because it took off Zhou Zishu's mask. Here I was thinking all this time it was the actual name of the lake! I had to laugh. I have learned a lot writing this blog, let me tell you.

Anyway!

Now that the whole set was assembled, I played around with the different poses with the figs, from the original pose listed in the instructions sheet:

(note, the MTL here for the title is "Bamboo Raft Play in the Middle of the Lake" which is also very descriptive and 100% accurate).

Here's my finished rendition:

Oops, I see I should have scootched A-Xu one row forward. Well, that's ok, because I took him off to place him in a different pose, which is beautifully showed off in this gorgeous sales pic:

This is super nice. One day I aspire to have nice fig photos like this!

I actually like this pose a lot, I see why they picked it. It's not exactly accurate to the show, but it really shows them off to their best detail.

Last pose is this one, which is from Episode 6:

I like this one a lot - the original Bedema Lake fig was this exact pose. Here's my rendition:

I feel like there's not quite enough real estate on the raft for this pose, and unfortunately you don't get both cute faces at once like on pose number 2.

Well, let's go ahead and spin around the fig so you can get all angles here. I took pics mostly in pose number 2 for this, since that's the pose I'm going to end up keeping them in for the display.

Like always, the camera zooms in like a laser for any imperfections, which can't be seen with the naked eye (or at least my aging eyes). So I can definitely see where I didn't press down the blocks together tightly enough!

I love all the motion modeling on this - the flying hair and robes are great.

Yes, I think I'm definitely going to try to rework the raft in brown and black, and throw in more of the leftover transparent bricks.

Lao Wen is very easy to pose since he's balancing on his one foot. The bricks are really great to keeping the figs securely on the base - they certainly have that over the normal PVC/resin figs!

I think they did a spectacular job on the hair all the way around, including the hair ornaments. Lao Wen's hairpin and A-Xu's hairband were rendered very nicely. I will note that their hair was super fiddly to assemble - lots and lots of little tiny pieces, many just hanging on by one connection. The number of times I pressed down on the fig in areas to squeeze the bricks together, and a piece of hair go flying off ... well, it doesn't bear repeating! There was some colorful language also flying around, I will say.

When I re-do the raft I'm also going to cover up the yellowy-beige base with more blue bricks so it looks more like water and less like water on a beach.

Note the little fig ears. Those were actually pretty easy to make!

The hobo goatee just makes me laugh! Just amazing.

And we're back around. The way they did the robes in 3-D fig form is also really excellent - the pants don't quite show up like this in the actual show,as they are hidden by the robes most of the time, but the way they are showing the motion of the figures here is quite inspired.

Alright, we're switching back to the original configuration where they are facing each other for the rest of the pics:

You can really see more of the hair detail here. There's a bit of light streaming in from my window that makes A-Xu's hair look lighter than Lao Wen's, but they're the exact same bricks.

Kind of a three-quarters angle, here, so you can see more of A-Xu's guan.

A little bit of the bottom's up view - it's a bit hard with the base to see all the detail. I'll have to remember for the other sets to take pics of the figs off the base.

Here's a size comparison to a very typical sized "regular" fig:

I put him on the raft so you could get the best comparison for the fig height. So, larger than a regular fig, but not tremendously so.

My conclusions after assembling this first set:

One: This was indeed an excellent project to do when recovering from surgery. I could sit without moving very much, put my headphones in and listen to music, and use some but not all of my brain. With the rest of my mind not preoccupied with counting bricks or puzzling out directions, I could just let my mind process through any number of things, or reminisce as the hours went by. It was very peaceful (except for when pieces went flying or I realized I had set a brick down in the wrong place several steps prior!), and some nice quiet time to myself. Normally I'm doing a ton of things all at once (or trying to, anyway!) and hustle and bustling all around between work and travel and the household and the fandom, so this was indeed a nice break.

Two: It really was a ton of fun. A big chunk of the time when I was assembling the figs I had no idea what I was doing or what piece of the fig I was actually working on, so to see it slowly unfold under my fingers was pretty cool. It was surprisingly rewarding, and indeed just plain fun to see the moment when I was like, oh there you are! I particularly had fun with the little details of their costumes, like their belts or their necklines, and I really enjoyed putting the little wispies on Wen Kexing's hair and the bangs on A-Xu.

Three: For the limited color palette and the limited brick sizes, I think they rendered these figs beautifully, with a lot of attention to detail. I would definitely have liked to have had more show-specific colors, but that would have been beyond the scope (and budget) of a small shop. It continues to be a good lesson for me to work through - not to be so picky about the details, and to be less pedantic about accuracy. A great reminder that what is important is having fun and enjoying each creative interpretation of the show, not about the exact shade of say, Lao Wen's robes.

Four: I am in fact entirely charmed and delighted with these fig sets, and despite my sore and aching fingers from snapping together endless rows of bricks, I moved directly into the next set.

Regency gown project: Part I-lost-count

As what is probably going to be the last thing I sew in 2022, I finally finished the bodice of the gown. Kind of. Mostly.

I’m pinning it in the front and will probably just go with pins for closures for the final dress. I tried button closures for the bodiced petticoat made from the same pattern, and I’ve decided that more buttons on the gown bodice would just be too bulky.

I only made 2 mockups when drafting the sleeve pattern, so I’m happy the process was relatively painless. I have no idea what the correct process for sleeve drafting is, but I just kind of vaguely cut out a shape that I thought would work, sewed it onto the bodice, refitted it until I was happy with it, took a pen to trace out the stitch lines, and then unpicked and cut out the final sleeve shape to trace onto a paper pattern.

As stated in the last progress update, it’s made from a lining of plain modern utility muslin and an outer fashion layer of cotton gauze. The gauze fabric has a floral pre-embroidered border that’s going to go around the bottom of the skirt. The rest of the embroidery on the dress will be done by hand.

There are 440 separate little dots on this bodice, not including the ones that go along the scalloped pattern on the ruffles of the sleeves. I know because I counted how many colonial knots I had to do instead of actually just sucking it up and doing them. The vine on the ruffles is also based on the extant gown, except I don’t think I got the proportion quite right because the leaves look like they’re spaced more closely together on the original gown. Oh well, I guess I’ll just do the vines right when I embroider the waistband.

On the extant dress, the dots and vine work are actually thousands of tiny metal staples, not embroidery. And they were originally silver, not black, but have tarnished over the last 210 years. But I actually really like the look of the darker dots, and the only pre-embroidered fabric I could find that would remotely work for this was the cotton gauze with a navy floral border that definitely isn’t historically accurate, so I’m sticking with navy blue thread embroidery for my dress. Attempting strict HA and making my dress as exact to the original is kind of moot since I’m already taking the liberty of giving this 1810s ballgown an apron-front closure for ease of getting in and out of it, instead of the back buttoned closure that would have been more popular by this decade and that I know for 100% certain the original gown has. Maybe someday I’ll try to make a more accurate replica, if I can source period-accurate cotton muslin and if I’m dedicated enough to attempt to do the entire skirt border embroidery by hand too. (If that ever happens, I might even go for back closures, except I would have to make them hooks and eyes instead of buttons because I 100% cannot reach back there with my right arm. And I’d need to contact the museum and ask if they have more photos of the back of the dress.)  For now I’ll settle for doing a bazillion colonial knots and apron front closures and conjectured side-back seam placements.

You can’t tell from the front view, but I have to use my hand as a censor bar for the side view today. Mostly because my stays are doing exactly what they’re supposed to. I can’t show you what the stays look like (aside from the tiny sliver you can see through the gap in the petticoat) because they are under bust and my shift is translucent, and that would be even more indecent than me not covering my neckline in the above photo. I’m really happy with my decision to remake the stays. I know I was upset because they’re really wrinkly, but it literally does not matter because you can’t see them anyway. I can’t say I really recommend the Bernhardt stays considering how much of a fuss they were to make and fit and remake and refit. I think I made 4 mockups before I was satisfied, and that’s just really psychologically painful when you sew everything by hand. My final pattern required so much tweaking that the shape doesn’t really resemble the original Bernhardt pattern anymore. That said, it was a good starting point and the finished product definitely does the job.

What was not doing its job today was my shift. The neckline kept bunching up in the back and making lumps through the gown bodice, so I tried to redistribute the gathers. That helped, but then it made my front neckline too low. But if I tried to tighten the drawstrings of the shift, then the shift would feel tight in the bust and flatten out the silhouette. So I had to settle for the lower front neckline, which means I just constantly look like I’m spilling out of my stays. (It’ll be fine. It will all get covered up once I make the front bib that will complete the bodice.)

The skirt also still needs to be embroidered with probably 3000 (not hyperbole) more tiny colonial knots before I can assemble the whole dress together, so this feels like a good stopping place to close out 2022.

We're finally doing something other than a short academic study drawing ☃️ We've been drawing a bunch of people, and I didn't feel comfortable posting any of my classwork for the past few weeks 'cause they were...umm, indecent. And moreso than that, it was just other people's faces and it didn't feel right to post that, even if they are hanging up right in the middle of the art building.

I've got explicit permission to post this project though, cause it's me :) it's not 100% accurate bc we were encouraged to take a small amount artistic liberty so we can "convey an emotional/thematic/symbolic idea" (something I have still not 100% decided on yet). I did end up making my eyes a bit smaller before the end of class, but I was also still in the middle of shading my face in so it looks wonky, so I'm gonna put up this picture taken halfway through class instead. I started right under my nose here, but it's the best photo I got for now haha. Anyway I wanna do progress updates on here instead of my main account because my main is for completed stuff only, and I still want some kind of log. The last time I did a portrait like this was three years ago and I regret not keeping track of my progress, so I'm not repeating my mistakes B)

I don’t know about you, but when people start throwing a lot of math and accounting around, my eyes glaze over.  I guess I was always a fluffy kitten, "look at the butterfly" kind of guy.  I struggled with math and even hired a tutor in college.  So for me at least you had better make things simple when it comes to numbers.   With what Spirit has inspired me with now in creating the breakthrough Life Force Energy Masterclass, it does involve numbers, but certainly is easy to figure out - even for me!
