“we need more complex female characters”
okay, well how about you take the ones we have and stop bitching about them doing “bad things”. let them be mean! let them be selfish!! yes, cheating is very wrong, i get it, but so is jumping kids! yall will give the most IN DEPTH analysis of these random soc boys and why they jump greasy kids (which there’s nothing wrong with analyzing the soc boys) but then you’ll turn around and bitch and moan about cherry and how she broke up with bob, or sandy and that she cheated, and sylvia cheating too, like…they’re all morally grey. no one’s black and white. they’re all good and bad. let them be good and bad, because even if these characters were the most fleshed out, sweetest characters ever, yall would dub them “annoying”
idk, it bugs me a lot of you can’t tell
#the outsiders#sandy the outsiders#evie the outsiders#sylvia the outsiders#cherry valance#angela shepard#queue#like look i don’t like sandy either but at least flesh her out a bit#there’s serious potential for fleshing her and all the other female characters out#i’ll admit i don’t love her character because there’s nothing to be said about her#and all we know is that she cheated#but like…there’s so much potential to give her an actual personality#yes i like writing her toxic but i also like having a reason as to why

i wish we got to see more of the girls in the outsiders, most of them dont even have a role and were just mentioned once or twice, and almost all of them are seen as bad
and theyre ALL mentioned to be someone's girlfriend, can we have a girl outsider who's character ISNT revolved around a man and has a role?? thanks!!!!!
i know cherry exists but my point about them being seen as bad: majority of the fandom hates her (could go on FOREVER defending her but thats for another time)
#angel rambles🎀#im like weirdly intrigued by sylvia?? idk she was mentioned like twice total i think and BOTH times were about her cheating#but still#i really wanna know more about her#AND MARCIA#ate those 2 scenes up fr#sandy tho#um#we're not gonna get into that#also evie#she was mentioned like once and it was talking about steve#this is about OUTSIDERS btw not twttin#so don't go bringing up angela#love her tho#kinda forgot everything about twttin bc my friend is borrowing my book rn but i remember liking her#she did a couple bad things tho so im assuming people don't like her

Modern outsiders headcanons
Because of the way he acts and dresses Curly gets mistaken for an E-boy.
The gang have a communal Spotify that they all pitch in to pay for.
Darry drives a second hand minivan.
Two bit is banned from the aux cord.
Steve and soda have been dating since freshman year.
Darry had parental locks on pony and soda’s phones until they turned fifteen.
Dally basically lives with the shepherd’s he shares a room with Curly.
Ponyboy and Curly are 'secretly' dating.
They're not allowed to be left alone unsupervised unless they're in public and they're only allowed in ponyboy’s room if the doors open.
Curly sneaks ponyboy into his room at night to just hang out without being constantly watched.
Dally has caught them multiple times and the only reason he hasn’t snitched is because Curly’s bribing him.
The only person Dally really cares about is Johnny.
Dally and Curly both have piercings, dally has an an ear piercing and eyebrow piercing, Curly has multiple ear piercings( he wears fake ear stretchers he stole from Claire’s) snakebites, an eyebrow piercing, a septum piercing all of which they gave each other while drunk the piercings were done with safety pins and needles sterilised with vodka (that somehow didn’t get infected), they also have stick and poke tattoos mainly just of stupid stuff but Curly had the bright idea to get ponyboy’s name tattooed under his collarbone ponyboy thought it was stupid but kinda romantic. Darry did not.
The shepherds are mixed (black and white).
Dally’s platinum blonde but dyes it black. No one knows except curly who caught him dying it black with the hair dye he supposedly stole for Sylvia.
Sodapop and Steve run a TikTok account.
Two bit and Marcia are dating.
Ponyboy writes fanfiction on Ao3 he’s really popular in multiple fandoms. only Johnny knows because he’s his beta reader.
Soda vapes.
Ponyboy had a twilight phase and had a massive crush on Edward.
Two bit starts a YouTube channel for musical comedy like a mix between Bo Burnham and Jon Cozart.
Two bit joins the drama club.
Tim and Darry hang out every Friday just to get out of the house.
Angela ran against Ponyboy for class president she won.
Marcia is part of the drama club that’s how she and two bit met.
Sandy on the volleyball team.
Sylvia runs the school newspaper.
Cherry is captain of the softball team and head cheerleader.

Misogyny in the fandom: let's talk about it
Not gonna lie, the level of interalized or even just blatant misogyny in this fandom is really disheartening sometimes. There is already VERY few female characters in the book, even fewer with speaking roles, and yet I see all of them being hated on in some way. People hate on Cherry for standing up for herself when Dally was harrasing her, and for not seeing Johnny in the hospital, which bullshit to begin with but also, you can't tell me that if the roles were reversed and Cherry sat down behind Dallas and starting talking about how stupid and classless greaser boys are, and Dally threw a coke at her, that the fandom wouldn't love him all the more for it. People hold her to this impossible golden standard, expecting her to literally be perfect instead of a conflicted and grieving teenage girl, when they embrace the flaws and give a lot more grace to much more violent and 'bad' male characters. It's a very 'boys will be boys' and 'girls mature fatser so they should know better' double standard that I really can't stand. Marcia gets a level of the same treatment, with people occasionally calling her vapid or shallow when the book makes it clear she and Two-bit actually really hit it off, and the number she gave him being fake was only Two and Ponyboy's speculation. But I digress. Moving on.
Misogyny and classism intersect when it comes to the few female greaser characters we get a little insight on. So many people LOATHE both Sandy and Sylvia because they're cheaters, but honestly, how is cheating worse than stealing? (And don't pretend they steal because they need to survive Ponyboy makes a point of claiming Two-bit doesn't really need or want half the stuff he shoplifts) How is it worse than jumping little kids? How is it worse than sexually harassing girls? How is it worse than the plethora of immoral or illegal activities the greaser guys partake in? If we're being 100% honest, it isn't. "But-but Sandy cheated on Soda, who really loved her". Yeah, she did. That was shitty of her, I'm not defending that, but she was also a sixteen year old girl in a tough situation she was trying to navigate the best she could. She could have lied and told Soda it was his and trapped him in a marriage raising a kid he definitely couldn't afford if she wanted to- but she didn't. Hell, she told him the truth and he was still ready to do that and she wouldn't let him. I don't think those are the actions of a completely terrible person, I think they're the actions of a scared kid who did some shitty things, but is trying her best and trying to do better. At the VERY least they're the actions of a multifaceted character who deserves the same level of grace and insight afforded to the male characters. (If anyone wants to read more of my thoughts on Sandy and her narrative importance, I have a post here). There's also something to be said about the poor 'greasy' girls facing harsher vitriol than the soc girls, and while part of it is because of Ponyboy's biased narration, it's clear to see that readers very much took his views at face value. Soc girls are 'good girls' and have to be perfect to deserve credit from the fans, but greasy girls are 'trashy' so it's ok for them to be judged and shit on. Spoiler alert: it isn't.
Sylvia is similar to Sandy in that her cheating and 'loose' behaviour earn her a lot of hate, which again, I'm not defending her cheating, but we need to give her the same analysis and benefit of the doubt given to Dally. Dally is NOT a good person. Ponyboy says this and makes it clear plenty of times. He's a hurt character, so we can explien why he is the way he is, but he isn't a GOOD character. he values loyalty, so he never cheated on Sylvia, but it's clear based on how he treats Cherry and casual comments he makes that he doesn't really respect women. I can't imagine Sylvia's experience dating him was one where she felt very adored. Again, not an excuse for cheating, but I can understand WHY she'd try and take back power within a dynamic and a society where she never had any, and I don't want to vilify her for that. She's also a poor woman growing up in the sixties- the book makes it clear life is hard enough for poor guys griowing up at that time, but it was probably equally if not more hard for poor women. I think, like the gang, she does what she had to to survive. If you can understand why the gang does bad things, and still be humans who can be considered good, you can extend the same understanding to Sylvia (and Sandy.) I think people need to also keep in mind that everything we know ABOUT Sylvia (and the rest of the female characters) we know from Ponyboy, a fourteen year old boy who's narration is INCREDIBLY biased and who doesn't have the full details of any of the relationships in the gang. Ponyboy sees Sylvia and Sandy as these terrible, loose women who have hurt people he cares about, so a lot of the fandom does too, but it doesn't change the fact that by doing so you're accepting and embracing Ponyboy's internalized misogyny and making it your own.
Anyway, I don't think I'm articulating this as well as i want to, and i spoke a bit more about this in this reply to one of the posts on the confessions page, but yeah, I just wish people could accept that fact that if they bend over backward to find ways to defend or explain immoral actions from male characters, but refuse to even attempt to do the same for female characters, they've probably internalized a bit of misogyny they should maybe work on.

Some of y’all are so mean about Steve and Two-Bit omg 😭😭😭 some people act like their only personalities are Two-Bit being an alcoholic and Steve being mean to Pony and liking chocolate cake like let’s be fr. Let’s clear the air w some canon details about the two most forgotten greasers bc they deserve better and some of y’all pay them absolutely dust as if they’re not important to the story also
Let’s start w pookie Steve
• “Steve Randle was seventeen, tall and lean, with thick greasy hair he kept combed in complicated swirls.” Ok so here’s some physical description, I’ve seen so many people say that Pony only gave Steve one line of description, there’s actually much more in the rest of Steve’s paragraph 😀
• Pony goes on to describe Steve as “tacky, smart, and Soda’s best buddy since grade school.” He also says that Steve can lift a hubcap quicker and quieter than anyone else in the neighborhood and also knows cars inside out and backwards and can drive anything on wheels. Pony takes time to emphasize that Steve is in fact smart (he’s still in school so this is important) and how skilled he is when it comes to cars
• Steve has been arrested before for unspecified reasons
• Pony says that Steve and Soda both have too much energy and feelings, which is why they get into fights and drag races so often
• Steve (and Two-Bit and Soda for that matter) would’ve joined in on Dally’s dirty talking to Cherry
• Steve and Soda will buy Pony bottles of soda and let him help work on the cars when he goes to the DX
• Steve was the one who saw Johnny’s jacket on the ground when he got jumped and picked it up with the plan to bring it back to him and was the one who looked closer and saw the blood on the jacket and the ground. Also- “Steve closed his eyes for a second and muffled a groan as he dropped on his knees beside Soda.” Steve was clearly very distraught to see Johnny in the state he was after being beat up so badly, which mirrors his reaction to when Dally died. Steve feels very deeply and has a hard time hiding it
• Steve threatened Sylvia when she was talking to Johnny and gave Johnny a lecture about girls- big brother energy
• he has a “soft, bitter voice”
• Steve and Two-Bit were the ones who started goofing around the time they went to church and Steve was the one who dropped the hymn book and embarrassed Pony and Johnny 😭
• Soda and Steve never fought
• Steve’s dad kicks him out about once a week which really bothers Steve and is likely a reason for his hatred for his father which Pony mentions earlier on. His dad usually gives him money to make up for it. He often sleeps on the Curtis couch (Pony says it’s “usually” Steve on the couch)
• Two-Bit and Steve were so happy to see Ponyboy after the fire, they immediately started roughhousing and teasing him
• “Don't worry about it," Steve said, cocksure that he and Sodapop could handle anything that came up. "They don't do things like that to heroes.” Steve was quick to reassure Pony that he wouldn’t get taken out of Darry’s custody
• the only time Soda was ever mad at Steve was when he called Darry all brawn no brain
• “Hate to tell you, buddy," Steve said, still flat on the floor, "but you have to wear clothes to work. There's a law or something.” Steve teasing Soda 😭
• Steve was “surprisingly angry” when Pony asked about Sandy, more than likely because he knew how upset Soda was about it
• Soda, Steve, and Pony all put in extra hair grease before the rumble to look cool
• he and Soda were “playing cards and arguing as usual” before the rumble
• Steve fights for hatred
• he had three broken ribs after the rumble. He looked “feverish and bewildered” when Pony came back from the hospital. Despite how hurt he was though, he immediately went running with everyone when Dally was in trouble
• “Steve stumbled forward with a sob, but Soda caught him by the shoulders” again, Steve was so visibly distraught when one of his friends was hurt, even more so now because Dally was dead
• Pony, Two-Bit, and Steve usually leave school together at lunchtime to go to the store
• Steve and Two-Bit were backing Pony when he used the bottle to defend himself from the Socs
• “Is that all that's bothering you, that switchblade?" a red-eyed Steve had snapped at him.” Just more of Steve and his emotions
So even though he is a side character, Steve is so much more developed than we give him credit for. He’s deeply loyal, emotional, has a strained relationship with his father, and would do anything for the people he cares about. Additionally, it’s so important that he’s Soda’s best friend too- who do we think was there for him when Pony ran away and Sandy left him or when Pony and Darry are arguing all the time?
Now for Two-Bit
• he would’ve come to get Pony from the movies in his car if Pony had asked
• Pony says life was one big joke to Two-Bit
• he had a wide grin and “couldn’t stop making funny remarks to save his life”
• famous for shoplifting and always mouthing off to cops
• he likes fights, blondes, and school
• Pony likes him a lot because he kept them all laughing at themselves and other things
• Pony says Two-Bit could put things into words good
• offered everyone cigarettes at the movies and paid for everyone’s drinks and popcorn
• Two-Bit gave Pony a similar lecture on girls to the one Steve gave Johnny
• Two-Bit “gallantly” offered to walk Cherry and Marcia the 20 miles home. He talked them into letting him drive them home which is where they were headed, to get his car, before Bob and Randy showed up
• “Two-Bit said, "Don't get mouthy, Ponyboy” his big brother energy is coming out y’all
• Two-Bit hit Pony hard upside the head when he said what he did about Johnny not being wanted at home
• “Shut up talkin' like that," Two-Bit said fiercely, messing up Johnny's hair. "We couldn't get along without you, so you can just shut up!” I’m crying
• he waved at everyone when they all turned to look at them after they all caused a ruckus in church 😭
• Johnny and Pony get Two-Bit and Darry on their team for football 😌 so we can assume Soda and Steve have Dally
• Two-Bit broke the windows in the school building
• Two-Bit got jumped while Pony and Johnny were gone but it wasn’t too bad because he’s a good fighter
• Dally and some other greasers wanted to jump Cherry when she came to talk to them but Two-Bit stopped them
• he was gonna go to Texas to look for Pony and Johnny 😔
• Pony says people like Two-Bit, Dally, and Tim Shepard forgot how to cry at a young age
• again, so excited when Pony got home. Picked him up and swung him around and immediately started making fun of his hair
• “What I like is the 'turn' bit," Two-Bit said, cleaning the egg up off the floor. "Y'all were heroes from the beginning. You just didn't 'turn' all of a sudden.” This quote is SO important. No, they didn’t just turn heroes. Two-Bit recognizes that Johnny and Pony had always been special even if others didn’t see it
• Two-Bit knew all about Pony’s nightmares and was interested in hearing about them when Pony told Darry about his dream
• immediately offers to babysit Pony when Darry is hesitant to leave him home alone
• Pony says it’s just about impossible to get mad at him
• Two-Bit wouldn’t take no for an answer when the nurse told them they couldn’t see Johnny
• he was closer to tears than Pony had ever seen him after snapping at Johnny’s mother
• gave Dally his switchblade, his prized possession, with zero hesitation when Dally asked
• could tell something was up with Pony and felt his head for a fever, really wanted to tell Darry but Pony said no
• Two-Bit fights for conformity
• he had four stitches in his cheek and seven in his hand after the rumble
• “Two-Bit came blubberin' over here with some tale about how you were running a fever before the rumble and how it was all his fault you were sick. He was pretty torn up that night.” He feels so guilty about Pony being sick :(
• was worried when he thought Pony was getting tough and relieved when he realized Pony was still his soft, sensitive self after picking up the broken glass
So we see that Two-Bit is definitely more developed than Steve and he is a super important character. He’s silly and goofy which is what they need sometimes in their hard lives, he’s got such a nurturing personality, he’s a gentleman at heart, and is so quick to praise/defend any of his friends, even against themselves like when Johnny talks bad about himself. Overall, he and Steve are both very much important to the story. Treat them better. The end.

Do you have any steviepop hcs? I love your blog :)
Thanks! And boy do I-
ok I’m gonna do this in the same format as my Steve x Evie headcannons, so like long-winded backstory first and then general relationship hcs/future stuff. There’s a lot so this is sorta long lol oops
(Tw for some period-typical homophobia…but like yk that’s sorta a given since it’s the 60s and all)
Backstory:
-So Steve’s always liked Soda a little more than he knows he’s supposed to. He noticed it at age twelve and has been repressing it for years. But by the time he’s sixteen, he’s fed up and pent up and sexually frustrated- and on top of it all, Soda’s dated tons of girls and Steve’s never even been kissed. Besides, he knows Soda’s unattainable.
-So when he meets Evie, who’s good-looking, funny, and likes him, he goes for it. Initially he thinks of her as someone he’s using to distract himself from Soda, but…c’mon. She’s Evie. She’s gorgeous and sweet and good with cars and as hotheaded as he is, but also lets him be sensitive and emotional in a way he never has let himself be before…And before he knows it, Steve’s fallen hard. Within a month he’s whipped for her and within two more he knows he’s gonna marry her someday.
-There’s only one issue: being in love with Evie has not made him fall out of love with Soda.
-And worse, Evie’s smart, and Steve, despite his efforts, is not subtle- so Evie knows. And initially she hates it. She hates feeling like she’s competing with Sodapop Curtis for her boyfriend’s attention. She hates how it makes her question if Steve even likes her at all. She hates how she’s also worried for Steve’s safety, even if he is (theoretically) using her, because even if he’s not in love with her, she still loves him and cares about him and it’s the 60s and gay is not a thing you wanna be in the 60s-
-But over time, Evie realizes that Steve really does love her as much as he says he does. He gives her his mom’s old jewelry, he goes cruising with her and they talk for hours, he sneaks into her window at night just to hang out, he holds her hand or waist or hips constantly because he loves being near her…he loves her, and she knows it.
-The problem is that he definitely also loves Sodapop. Evie’s like 99% sure of it.
-See, Evie’s never liked Sodapop as much as everyone around her. Sure he’s cute, but maybe she thinks he’s a little unambitious and loser-y. Like the kind of airhead Sylvia would date just because he’s a good lay. Besides, everyone likes Soda- he’s like, way too mainstream, and Evie’s not impressed. She’s heard him flirt. It’s pathetic. And so cocky and preformative.
-But through Steve, Evie begins to see a different Soda. The more she hangs out with him, the more she sees him as the guy Steve sees- a good hearted, passionate, fiercely protective guy, who’s more emotionally intelligent (at least w/ other people’s emotions) than any other guys she’s met. He’s considerate, earnest, and yeah okay also ridiculously pretty. And much to her chagrin, Evie…starts to see the appeal. She’s a little in love with Soda too now. He’s not Steve, but she really does like him.
-She puts her feelings and also Steve’s feelings on the backburner tho ‘cos Soda’s dating Sandy… Until he isn’t.
-And now that Soda constantly third wheels Steve and Evie’s dates, he begins to realize how much he likes being with them. He always feels so…good around them. But that’s weird, right? He shouldn’t feel like that for his best friend’s girl…and he definitely shouldn’t feel like that for his best friend. Soda tries to chalk it up to jealousy- he’s just jealous of Steve, he doesn’t love him, he’s just jealous that Steve gets to have Evie, who really is stunning and Soda really likes her-
-But he isn’t jealous. Not really. He loves that Steve and Evie love each other. They’re so happy. Honest to God, he loves it- he loves seeing them happy. Lord knows they deserve it. Besides, Soda doesn’t really feel not included. Actually, he’s very included. The only times he feels a tinge of loneliness are when Steve and Evie fall asleep cozied up in Evie’s bed, while Soda takes the guest room. And yeah, okay, maybe he’s jealous when they hold hands in public- they’ve both held his hand in private, but never in public…And sure, a part of Soda wishes that they’d refer to him as their boyfriend too and maybe kiss him instead of just each other-
-That’s impossible though. He knows it’s impossible. He and Steve are men. Evie and Steve are sickeningly in love. Soda’s just a bother, tagging along like a sad dog who neither of them wanna deal with but are too polite to scare away. It’s fine. Soda’s already heartbroken over Sandy, he’s used to this. It’s actually a little boring. Sure he’s sad, but like, duh. He’s always sad. So like Soda almost always does when he’s sad, he ignores it and pretends it isn’t happening. Sure he smokes more and his risks are getting stupider, but after Dally and Johnny, ain’t everyone?
-The thing is, Soda’s even less subtle than Steve. And to Evie, who’s already accepted that Steve is bi (well she wouldn’t call it “bi” in the 60s, but yk what I mean) and in love with Soda, it’s insanely obvious that Soda’s also in love with Steve. Soda keeps flirting with girls and looking at Steve and Evie for approval, leading Steve around by the belt loop, he checks Evie out very obviously, he takes them out on outings that aren’t technically dates but do usually end with all three of them sitting in the car and cuddling (although of course both Steve and Soda would vehemently deny that it’s “cuddling” lol. By daylight, they prefer not to acknowledge it at all)... Evie knows there’s something going on here.
(As an aside, I don’t mean for the girl character to be the emotionally intelligent one because I think girls are inherently emotionally smart or anything. I just think that it’s easier in this case for Evie to put it together, because she doesn’t have any internalized homophobia towards herself like Steve and Soda do. Evie’s the only one who isn’t actively denying her feelings- while it was still taboo to like multiple guys in the 1960s, it was a helluva lot more taboo to be gay.)
-So finally, Evie just spills all this to Steve.
-He gets really pissed, and also scared, and also guilty- he’s always seen his feelings for Soda as perverted and wrong. Initially he’s angry that Evie would even suggest that, but really he’s angry because she’s right. And if she knows, then she’ll leave him, won’t she?
-Evie reassures him that she will not leave him and that she’s okay with it. Encourages it, actually- and besides, she’s a bit in love with Soda too.
-So in some dramatic scene that I’ve written on ao3 twice now, Soda finds out. And thus Steviepop is born lol
General relationship h/cs
-They all think they’re very secretive about the fact that they’re all dating. They aren’t subtle at all though. No one outside of the gang suspects anything- ‘cos who’d come to that conclusion in 1960s Tulsa? But within the gang it’s just one of those things everyone kinda knows but doesn’t talk about, like how they all know not to ask Two-Bit about his drinking habits or how they all know not to talk about Paul Holden with Darry.
-But in a Dally lives AU, he definitely brings it up- I’ve written a scene where he does actually, it’s gonna be in a fic I’m workin on. Dally tries to make it seem like he’s just fucking with Soda, but really he’s trying to be protective- he, like the rest of the gang, worries a bit about how comfortable and affectionate the trio is. In his head, it’s only a matter of time before someone actively homophobic hurts them.
-Ponyboy finds out about it because he sees Soda kissing Evie and has a whole moral panic- does he tell Steve and betray Soda?! But Steve does deserve to know- But what if he ruins Steve and Soda’s friendship? Well, Soda’s kinda doing that himself by kissing Steve’s girl-
-He eventually decides to tell Steve, because he knows deep down that’s the right thing to do.
-Steve is sorta touched that the kid would do that for him, but boy, it’s funny. He sorta vaguely implies that he’s aware and okay with it- “Evie and Sodapop- we uh…have…um…an arrangement.”
-Pony quickly learns the terms and conditions of that arrangement when he goes with them to the drive-in and sees how they all are with each other. He’s bright. He connects the dots quick- Good grief, he’s fourth wheeling his brother, Evie Peterson, and Steve fucking Randle.
-He doesn’t ever mention it again after that, at least not until Soda tearfully comes out to him and Darry about six months later. (Pony and Darry just kinda look at each other and try to sound like they 100% didn’t know what Steve, Evie, and Soda have been getting up to in Soda’s old room)
-They all go to prom together, although they claim Soda’s just third-wheeling
-Soda and Evie bond over loving horses. Meanwhile, Steve has been scared of horses ever since Soda hurt his knee, and they make fun of him for being scared lol. He says he isn’t but he definitely is.
-Evie and Soda wear the same shoe size, and he’s absolutely worn her gogo boots before around the house as a joke. (Evie, in turn, has worn his cowboy boots- but she’s worn ‘em out in public. Soda loves it.)
-Both Evie and Soda have worn Steve’s vest. It’s too short for Soda and looks super cropped on him lol (I mean it is technically cropped in the movie but like. Tom Cruise is short lol. It meets his waistband just fine.)
-But Soda specifically loves when Steve and Evie wear his stuff- to avoid suspicion, he can’t be as open with them as they are with each other in public, but when they wear his jackets or shirts, he feels included. He can’t hold their hands, but Evie’s wrapped in his flannel and Steve’s in his DX cap, so they’re still his.
-Soda has first-fought someone for catcalling Evie. (Steve would too obviously, but then, he’d fist-fight anyone just for fun.) (Well, ok, Soda would too, but Evie didn’t know that back then)
-Their theme song has gotta be “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys. I’ve used that for Stevepop before, but it’s extremely Steviepop too, especially from Soda’s POV.
-When two of them have shifts at the DX and one doesn’t, the one who doesn’t sometimes just shows up anyway. Usually it’s Steve, although it remains to be seen whether he does it outta love for Evie and Soda…or if he just misses the cars.
-One time Evie introduces them to her mom, as her boyfriend and his friend. Except…she never actually clarified which was which, so her mom still isn’t sure is she’s with “the short one with the nice arm muscles and fucked teeth”, or if she’s with “the pretty one who looks like a cowboy”. She’s also not sure who she’d prefer for Evie to be with- Soda’s better looking and has better manners, but Steve is buff and has more money… (Evie is fully aware of her mom’s confusion, but until her mom asks her outright, she’s not going to explain- she thinks it’s hilarious)
-Evie’s going to college, she wants to be a doctor, or maybe a nurse because she’s not sure she can afford to get a doctorate/go to med school. And Steve, who’s always had decent grades (yk, a solid B student w/ maybe one or two Cs/As in between), figures he might as well give the college thing a go, too. He’s always sorta wanted to design his own cars, maybe he’ll try engineering school- and hey maybe he’ll hate it and drop out, but either way, he’s going where Evie goes.
-Soda on the other hand feels like he can’t go with them, because A, he’s a high school dropout, and B, he can’t leave Ponyboy and Darry. They need him…right?
-But there’s a ranch that needs stable hands out near the town the college is in…and Darry and Ponyboy haven’t fought in a while…and Soda can still support them financially with checks in the mail…and Evie and Steve leased an off-campus apartment that needs a third roommate…
-So Soda goes with them.
-Eventually though they do move back to Oklahoma. Maybe to Bixby (Tex fans where you at lol), where Evie is close enough to the hospital to not have a long commute, and Soda is close enough to the country to work at stables. (He has his own horse, although he can’t afford a stable- so he rents stable space from the McCormick brothers) (Tex fans where you at) (Steve’s happy enough too- everyone needs a mechanic everywhere, so he’s never gotta search hard for work)
-When they’re in their late twenties, Steve and Evie get married- the only reason why they put it off for so long was because they didn’t want Soda to feel left out. But by then they’ve all been together for like nine years, so Soda knows and trusts that he’s fully an equal part of the relationship. It’s a real small ceremony with only their closest friends, and Soda’s at the altar with them and gets a ring too. (The officiant is confused but really no one cares about that lol)
-Idk i guess after that most folks have kids but…I don’t really think Steve would want that? In my heart tho they adopt Tex but that’s outlandish even for me lol

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕆𝕦𝕥𝕤𝕚𝕕𝕖𝕣𝕤 ℍ𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕔𝕒𝕟𝕠𝕟𝕤-
Ponyboy and Soda shared a room and at one point when their Parents were alive Darrel also shared a room with them. When Darrel was a kid and Soda was a newborn their Dad would try and make Soda say Dada and then Darrel started to try to get Soda to say Darry.(Soda said Darry before he said Mom or Dad) When Steve met Soda in grade school he saw him being bully(because he had problems with with mixing up Sh and Ch noises and B's and D's) and Steve help Soda with the Socs(AKA the bullys) and that's how they became best friends. When Dally was in NY he fell in love with someone who looked like Sylvia but never talked to her and then when he moved to Tulsa he thought that Sylvia was the girl from NY and really loved her but he knew that loves doesnt last forever(because of his parents). Two-Bit has let his sister do his makeup and he's been out of the house with it one time with the gang and he knew it was on and he loved it(He sister is good at makeup). When Sandy had left Soda, Steve broke up with Evie(Because Steve loves Soda and we all know it) or Evie and Steve got with Soda. Johnny has cried one other time in his life and that was in Dallys arms and Dally held him understanding his pain more then anyone in the group. Dally is the only one who is allowed to mess with Ponyboy(Except for Soda and Darry because they're his older brothers) but onw time Steve was being an asshole to Pony and Dally put him on his ass so fast and reminded him to never mess with Pony like he does.(Steve messes with Pony but not like Dally, Darry, and Soda do). One of Pony's Nick names from Darry is Horsefly and Dally called Pony Horsefly at one point and that was the only time Darry punch Dally. Two-Bit and Pony have had a fight at school with the Socs and Darry had to come pick them up and Darry looked at Two-Bit and Pony and tried to not laugh when he learned that Pony and Two-Bit beat the living shit out of the Socs. Ponyboy and Johnny had sleepover at Pony's house and that was one of the first ever sleepovers Johnny had and Johnny loved it.

Hi :) I was wondering if you could do Poly Dallas and sodapop hcs? with a reader if you're comfortable with it, of course. I think it would be a funny dynamic
This was written in my anatomy class (can you tell that I don’t pay attention in anatomy?) so I’m gonna give @a-person-who-didn’t-want-to-be-here a big huge thank you for helping me out <4
Anyway!
There’s a really complicated getting together story here? I just haven’t figured it out quite yet, so I’m gonna leave that to you guys to think up cause there’s a few ideas swirling around my head, I just haven’t nailed anything down because I’m really not in love with any of my thoughts
But you’ve got the best of both worlds going on for you! A nice golden retriever boyfriend and a boyfriend who’s more of a german shepherd/rottweiler/doberman type-
Life is good!
Both of these boys run warm and they can both be very very handsy, made worse by the fact that they are both very very much in love with you
Jealousy is sort of wonky here? Cause Dally’s very loudly jealous, but Sodapops jealousy comes off as him acting more closed-off and withdrawn, he just kinda pulls away when you hang too much with Dallas
Also, before we get any further along, Sandy and Sylvia don’t exist here because I’m in charge and I make the rules :)
Parties! You’re always being dragged out to parties, whether it’s a drag race and you’re on Sodapop’s arm, or a late night party at Buck’s bar where Dally keeps you tucked to his side all night long
You’ve got the whole freaking gang honestly, the whole crew wrapped around your finger-
Dating Dally gets you Johnny in an instant, dating Sodapop gets you Pony, Dare, and Steve- the only one left is Two-Bit but ya know, he’s a good enough guy, he’s probably on your side in all this anyhow-
You’re at the DX a lot, just hanging around the pumps and the garage and the register while Soda’s at work (you definitely skip school to go see him, Dally picks you up and you guys waste the day over at the gas station)
Sodapop sneaking out to meet you and Dally down at Buck’s because there’s a party tonight and honestly he doesn’t care if Darry kills him for being at the Merrill’s establishment, he hasn’t seen you all week long-
Of course of course, you’re wearing Dally’s ring and when you and Sodapop are holding hands, he likes to twist it around your finger and fiddle with it
Dally asks him what he’s doing, asks if Sodapop’s trying to take it off as if he’s got some sort of problem with you wearing somebody else’s ring but Soda just kinda shrugs and says he likes fooling with it
Baby boy’s got no problem other than ADHD and he likes to mess with things 🤷
Patching them up after a rumble is such an obnoxious task- Dally’s whining about broken ribs and how he can barely breath and Soda’s slouched on the floor, holding an ice pack to his face and asking if you’ll still love him if he’s got a black eye
Suggestion? Try and keep them close together in this situation ^^ make them sit near each other, because they both want attention and if you’ve got to run back and forth across the living room every two seconds, no one’s going to be happy-
You spend a lot of time sitting in Dallas’ lap and you spend a lot of time holding Soda’s hand, sometimes these happen at the same time-
Imma say it, you’re not sharing a bed with both of them unless you’re hurt or sick because both of these boys are like portable space heaters and no matter how cold you may be, these human furnaces will make you feel like you’re being slowly cooked because they sandwich you between them
PET NAMES PET NAMES PET NAMES
Doll, baby, honey, sugar, sweetheart, babe….
Just…you’re gonna forget you actually have a name because they never call you by your actual name-
You’re dating two highschool dropouts, how do you feel about that?
Joking, joking, I know you feel wonderful, as you should, because you’re going with two great guys!!
There’s like?
A betting pool going around?
Because no one can figure out who you’re going out with (other than the gang of course)
And Sodapop and Dallas do nothing to help you out- they purposefully make it even worse-
You go to a party with Sodapop, hanging off his arm, and at the end of the night, you’re going home with Dally, spending your night in his room at Buck’s
You’re sitting on the DX counter (you don’t even work there but you have free reign of the place, let’s be real) and you’ve got Dally’s medal around your neck, Dal himself is off in reform and you and Sodapop are planning a date <3
One night, you get caught kissing Dallas, tongues down each others’ throats and all that jazz, and the next thing everyone else knows, you’re walking with Sodapop and he’s got a hand in your pocket
Everyone is town is anxiously awaiting the day that the boys figure out you’re two-timing them because surely, Dallas Winston isn’t going to stand for you messing around on him
But ya know, nothing ever happens, even when people try and get Sodapop and Dallas to see what’s going-
With Soda, they’ll point out Dally and you sitting at a diner booth together, asking him what’s going on, cause weren’t you guys going steady?
And Dal, they’ll ask him where you are when you’re not at Buck’s, mentioning casually that you’ve been hanging out around the DX an awful lot-
With Male!Readers?
You guys are labeled just as good friends all the time and it makes it a lot easier to lie about why you guys are together all the time (curse you time-period realistic homophobia *shakes my fist at the sky*)
I would loveeeeee to do a male!reader piece for this topic, just saying guys-
This….really got away from me-
Sorry for making this so long guys-

Things I'm noticing on my reread. Chapters 1-2
Darry was captain of the football team in school
Soda knows how to lift one eye-brow and he learned it from Two-Bit
DARRY APOLOGIZES TO PONYBOY IN CHAPTER ONE
Ponyboy has to put a stupid bandaid on the cut he got bc Darry told him to.
when asked about school at the end of chapter one, Soda redirects to talk about Sandy instead
could be wrong but Dally is waiting to meet Johnny and Pony under a streetlight at the beginning of chapter two, would be kinda cool if it's the same one he dies under
Hinton always avoids going into detail about what Dallas is saying when Ponyboy talks about how good he can swear or how dirty he can talk.
PONYBOY CALLS DALLAS OLD IN CHAPTER TWO D:
Cherry ate with "too bad you can't ride a bull half as well as you can talk it" no crumbs
Cherry apologizes to Ponyboy when he says he's friends with Dallas. I just thought that was funny.
TWICE HE CALLS DALLAS OLD IN CHAPTER TWO
slightly off-topic but a couple times Pony will explain something they do and go "don't ask me why, I don't know why" meaning he knows how shitty some things they do are, but it's just the way that it is, and if he felt like he had a choice, he wouldn't say or do those things.
Two-Bit is good at voice imitations!! I feel like we moved past that one too quick
GUYS CHERRY IS SO FUNNY I LOVE HER SM.
Two bit jokingly goes "who's this? your great aunts?" and Cherry (the GOAT) Valance goes "Great-grandmothers, twice removed" THAT WAS SO FUNNY.
Two-Bit does the eyebrow thing when he's puzzled or confused <3
GUYS THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN TWO-BIT AND THESE GIRLS.
Guys even Two-Bit called Dallas old.
okay but "Mr. Timothy Shepherd and Co." was one of the funniest things Two-Bit ever said.
I feel like the sentence "He sure put things into words good" was bad on purpose. Like Pony you're writing a BOOK wtf are you talking ab
TWO-BIT HAS GREY EYES <3333
It's interesting to me how the Socs attack on Johnny effected him more than a whipping from his father with a two-by-four
Also Dallas looked sick at seeing Johnny all beat up, despite having watched, yunno, murders back in NY
guys off-topic but Cherry is such a girlboss
anyway
Sylvia tried to make a move on Johnny while Dally was in reform school >:(
Chapter two ends with "I know better now." which actually like stabbed me through the heart bc AGH
Lmk if you want more updates and lists like this as I reread. This was only chapter one and two D:

ICKS THE GREASERS WOULD GIVE
(sorry not sorry y'all)
DARRY
Would get mad a Ponyboy and if you stand up for him (if he's being unreasonable) he'll get even more mad and yell at you
Anger issues and takes it out on you (NEVER EVER physically) and will apologize eventually but still makes you feel bad
Unknowingly gaslights you by saying things like "your acting unreasonable." Or "your being crazy."
SODAPOP
Completely fucking oblivious to girls flirting with him because he's so used to it and won't realize it til you tell him
Will be closed off if you give him a vague discription of what you're doing or where you're going because of sandy
PONYBOY
Can genuinely just be a bitch like if he's in a bad mood he's like me on day two of my period
Also he won't say anything about it he'll genuinely just be a cunt
You've definitely had to walk out on his silly business once
Scared the shit out of him tbh
JOHNNY
I genuinely can't think of anything for him
He's just like doesn't radiate anything bad
Maybe he like keeps things from you like how he's feeling
Or where he's sleeping that night because he doesn't want you to feel bad for him
In the end still not really a ick
Flirts with other girls to make you upset if you made him upset
Totally not afraid that your gonna do what Sylvia did to him so he totally doesn't accuse of it occasionally
Smokes a lot and doesn't plan on stoping
Lacks communication skills
Everything he did to cherry at the drive in
My man y'all ❤️❤️❤️😻😻😻😻
TWO-BIT
Jokes at inappropriate times and will not stop
Will make jokes about things you haven't mentally recovered from
Achollic and refuses to admit it
STEVE
Mean like literally
Can be too rough at times and doesn't understand it
Like he'll hold your hand or something and just squeeze it way to hard and if you tell him to stop he'll say your being a baby
IM SORRRYYYYYT

Renaming this to Slander Series because people got mad at me a little bit:
Slanders Series on some of The Outsiders characters:
Disclaimer: I know no one is perfect but these are things I felt that some of the characters were at big fault for (maybe I overlooked the story) and just because some of the characters have faults doesn’t mean I hate the story, the author, or all of the characters.
Really big hot take: Cherry deserves slander because she caused Johnny and Dallas’s death. She knew that Bob would be angry with her being with the Greasers being around her in general, and yet she walks with them after the movies. If she hadn’t had walked with them, Bob wouldn’t have been angry, and then he wouldn’t have attacked Ponyboy and then it wouldn’t have forced Johnny to kill Bob, and then it wouldn’t have forced them to run away to the church and save the kids from the church that Johnny burned in, and if Johnny didn’t die Dallas wouldn’t have died. (Also saying Marcia is innocent either, she shouldn’t have walked with them either.) Also if you think about, if she didn’t walk with them, she would have saved her boyfriend. So yeah, Cherry deserves slander… I’m not defending Bob at all, he’s the worst one in this situation. But Cherry is not freaking innocent and I don’t understand all that much why she gets defended. She also literally treated Ponyboy like shit at the end too! Like be fr girl…
Also, I understand people won’t 100% agree with this. That’s fine, people should also have their opinion. But don’t be disrespectful to others if you disagree or agree with this. I tolerate Cherry hate but not hate towards one another lol. It’s called a hot take for a reason.
Edit: Slander on other characters that I thought of so people in the comments wouldn’t just attack me for slandering Cherry. Might make a slander series who knows… REMINDER HOT TAKES AND OPINIONS YOU MIGHT NOT ALWAYS AGREE WITH BUT BE RESPECTFUL IF YOY WANT TO SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS! IM OPEN TO OTHER PERSPECTIVES AS WELL.
A big slander on Two-Bit and Dallas is that they sexually harass women. In deleted scenes Dallas kissed a girl without her permission. And Two-Bit in the movie pulled a Soc girl’s dress up showing her underwear. I definitely hate that part of The Outsiders too.
Slander on Sylvia and Sandy. I hate the fact that cheated. (Now I don’t know if this is true or not but Dallas had been a cheater in the past, I could be wrong though.) I hate the fact that Sylvia was someone Dallas really liked other than Johnny, Ponyboy and the gang. We know this because he gave her his necklace. She might have seen that he actually liked her and manipulated him through that. She also cheated TWICE, why’d you go back Dal??? Now Sandy I slander on A LOT because she cheated on Sodapop of all people. Dallas isn’t that great of a person, he’s been through it like everyone else and made bad decisions, but Soda I can’t really even think of one bad thing he genuinely did. She cheated on a saint who also loved her so much that asked her grandparents to MARRY her! And she cheated and got pregnant with Soda and didn’t even have the courage to admit that?!? Yeah, no. Sodapop and Dal got fucked over in this situation.

Jobs I think The Outsiders characters have/would have (in a world where they get to grow old):
Ponyboy becomes a novelist and an English professor (Mr. Symes changed his life) before retiring and going back to Tulsa and having a nice little life on a farm (think C Thomas Howell)
Darry works as a roofer/in construction and will start his own business. He lives in that type of job for the rest of his days. He could also be a trucker, I'd see that.
Sodapop becomes a mechanic. Both blue collar brothers are so proud of their smarty pants writer brother.
Steve works as a mechanic with Soda.
Two-bit would get a low entry level job that doesn't require a diploma. He changes jobs often. He's worked on farms, in customer service for two months, in assembly lines. He could be a bus driver for a long while. As long as he gets money for booze (Marcia is the one bringing in the dough)
Dally earned cash by working at Buck's and in the rodeos. I thought about him becoming a cop. Maybe he'd inherit the bar and run it with Sylvia if she doesn't find anything better.
Johnny worked part time in a grocery store to at least be able to survive. I want to see him working as a butcher just to make him suffer. Realistically he'd probably go on a farm though.
Paul in one of my fic works in marketing for a mining company in Montana. Don't ask me what this means, I don't know.
Cherry would be a nurse or a teacher and she'd LOVE it.
Bob would be the president of a company. Which one? I don't know and I don't care. Or a cop.
Marcia seems like a very caring person and with ber relationship with Two-bit, I think she'd wanna become a social worker
Bev is a mean girl so probably a nurse or a teacher hahaha
Brill could work as a car salesman. I'd see that.
Chet would work as a coach for a football team, maybe a high school teacher.
Someone said Trip had a recording studio and I agree with that. Next.
Ace would get an awesome job. She's a mixed kid from a poor neighborhood and would try to stick it to the people. She'd become a doctor or a scientist to prove to people her worth.
Sandy is a waitress at a diner so she can bring a bit more income. I see her still woth Soda and raising their kids together (they have like 4)
Sylvia is a bartender at Buck's

My Favorite Headcanons for Each Character (Remake)
Notes: Sorry if some of these are OOC, lol. Also small TW/CW for mentions of abuse and depression. (If I missed anything else, please let me know so I can add them. Thank you.)
THE CURTIS GANG:
— PONYBOY “PONY” CURTIS
A lot stronger than he looks. He’s surprised people with his strength. (His legs are strongest. Boy does track, y’all.)
— JOHNNY CADE
He’s transgender. He came out/transitioned when he was seven-years-old. (This is what really made Mrs. Cade start abusing him badly.) His deadname is Amelia.
— DALLAS “DALLY” WINSTON
Has severe OCD. Ponyboy learned that the hard way.
STEVE RANDLE
Sounds exactly like Elvis Presley when he sings. (It’s also my voice claim for him, lmfao.)
SODAPOP “SODA” CURTIS
Will eat anything you put in front of him. He ate a napkin one time. (Darry was horrified.)
— KEITH “TWO-BIT” MATHEWS
Comes up with creative nicknames for everyone. He calls Steve “Steve-o” and came up with Dallas’ nickname (Dally).
— DARREL “DARRY” CURTIS JR.
He has depression. The gang is aware of this, but only Dally and Two-Bit know how bad it is/how bad it can get.
THE SHEPARD SIBLINGS:
— TIM SHEPARD
He’s really good with babies. And kids. He’s a kid magnet. Kids love him.
— CURLY SHEPARD
Has a lot of small stick-n-poke tattoos. And piercings. He has a shit ton of piercings.
— ANGELA SHEPARD
An absolute angel when Tim’s around, but the moment he leaves the room, she’s a complete gremlin. (She’s fourteen y’all.) (My AU.) (Most fourteen-years-olds are like this.) (I speak from experience.)
THE SOCS:
— SHERRI “CHERRY” VALANCE
Has a good relationship with her older brother. They’re very close and are the most adorable sibling duo ever. (On the West Side.) (They rival the Curtis brothers, lmao.)
— ROBERT “BOB” SHELDON
Mute due to Johnny stabbing him in the neck and damaging his vocal chords. (Again, don’t ask me why I hc him to live, I just do, aight?)
— MARCIA SINCLAIR
Loves visiting France during the holidays. She wants to bring Two-Bit along some day.
— PAUL HOLDEN
An alcoholic asshole. I said what I said. (Sorry Paul lovers, I hate him.)
OTHERS:
— SYLVIA
Bitch. (I have no headcanons for her, sorry not sorry.) (I hate her sm.) (I gotta give her a last name.)
— SANDY
No headcanons for her either, sorry. (I don’t like her either—)
— EVANGELINE “EVIE” FOSTER (I finally gave the girl a name, yippee!!)
She’s a tattoo artist and works in a tattoo parlor. She gave Steve his eagle tattoo. (He was her first client and the design came out worse than she expected. She cried because she thought Steve would hate it, but Steve convinced her that it wasn’t horrible (it is) and calmed her down.) (This was pre-canon btw, so they were dating.)
— RANDALL “RANDY” ADDERSON (Putting him here and not w/ the Socs bc he’s a hippie in my AU.)
Has heterochromia. His left eye is jet-black and his right eye is bright green.
— BUCK MERRIL
Adopted this headcanon from another Tumblr user (can’t remember who). Anygays—Buck is a sweetheart. He doesn’t get mad easily and the only time he does get angry is when people refuse to pay their tab. Otherwise, he’s really sweet.

How the gang are when there first in love/ in a relationship
Summary: The Outsiders in the honeymoon phase. Warnings: bad relationships (only because they don't know what they're doing) Author's Note: not quite sure what this ask meant but i tried my best lol
PONYBOY CURTIS Being in a relationship with Ponyboy is like always being in the puppy love phase. Because you both are so young, you don't really understand how 'true relationships' work. He's taking you on dates and stuff but you two have never had any serious issue because its not a super serious relationship and you two never have much to fight about. When you first start dating he's always picking flowers for you, and although that slows over time the sentiment never fades and he always has the 'couple aesthetic' in mind, i.e. doing things that he would see other couples do just for the sake of looking like a couple and acting like one. JOHNNY CADE Being in a relationship with Johnny is hard, he's vunerable but also emotionally unavalible at the same time. But he tries his best to be a good boyfriend, especially at the beginning of the relationship. He doesn't take you on 'dates' per say, rather shows up at your house or where you're hanging out when he has free time, you two will just chat for a while or fall asleep. He doesn't want to introduce the gang to you, he feels as if its a part of him he doesn't want you to see yet, and your a part of him that he doesn't want the gang to see. SODAPOP CURTIS Soda has been in only a couple of relationships, despite his charm, and they were usually playground relationships, things that sparked in elementary because of silly reasons. He has a lot of trust issues, especially from Sandy, and he's always hesitant when starting a relationship and even taking the relationship up a notch. Because of that, he's a little more reserved when you're dating, but sometimes he can break out of his shell and be calm and relaxed around you. STEVE RANDLE Steve's been in plenty of relationships, mostly when he was in middle school and beginning of highschool and they never usually meant much.
He's always tried to put in a little effort, he's just not sure what he needs to do, especially because there aren't many good relationship models around him. He tries to bring you flowers once and a while, and get you gifts and small outings, but beyond that he doesn't understand. There's always a lack of communication and sometimes feelings are hurt. TWO BIT MATHEWS Two Bit is always looking for a girlfriend, he likes the idea of it. He has very high standards and expects you to know what he wants immedietly. He's always very open about things, especially his family life because he loves them a lot. You also get to meet his sister pretty early on in the relationship. Expect a lot of joke-making, that's his personality. He's got a whole load of jokes stacked up in his mind for the right time and place. P.S. please laugh or he will get sad. DARRY CURTIS Darry really tries hard to be the best he can in a relationship. But he's balancing a lot of things mentally and sometimes he gets overwhelmed. He never takes his anger out on you but he does drift away with out reason until you seek him out, which isn't a really healthy way to maintain a relationship. Regardless, you tell him that you'll give him space when he needs but he must tell you that he wants it or else both parties are going to be hurt. He understands and tries his best from then on. DALLAS WINSTON I love him, but he's going to be a shit boyfriend. Especially after all the things went down with Sylvia, he's got loads of trust issues too. Always making sure you don't talk to anyone that he doesn't fuck with. He get's very possessive and jealous, but he doesn't fight others like a lot of people think but instead takes it out on you. He gets really pissed a lot of the time and you guys take a lot of breaks early in the relationship. He'll only let you wear his St. Christopher once he trusts you enough, he says it's because you could run off with them or something. It's really hard to win his trust but with enough time you do it.
