i really like your take on padme in mermay au, she is straight up vicious, it somehow suits her better than her canonical persona? i don't know i never saw her as particularly, overly kind in canon, more like someone who definitely cares but is downright manipulative? idk if i'm making sense, long story short, this version of padme scratched an itch in my brain i didn't know i had

i think padme is always fun to write because versions of her can be very complex and when i write her i like to focus on her capacity for anger (in fics where she and anakin are still together when the fic starts) i'm sure that gets a bit tiring to read for people but i just can't see her character just being calm and placid and ok with losing anakin immediately. she seems too fiery in canon, and she seems to love anakin too much to just let him go

and when im writing padmé in canon fics, i want to balance that part of her with her other parts, like her kindness and a sense of justice and empathy ('a more perfect union' padmé for example is all of those things), but i think all those parts are important.

so i've really liked how easy it's been to lean into padmé's viciousness in the mer au!! it's been super fun for me, because one of my favorite parts of writing different aus is playing with how much a character is of a particular trait (ie., how much of a bitch obi-wan is, how much of a brat anakin is, how much of a good jedi is anakin, how much infinite sadness does obi-wan have etc etc) so i've liked dragging padmé's viciousness all the way up to the top of the scale here

she's a mermaid queen who is queen of a vicious and vain society and being queen means different things in this au than it does in star wars canon, a lot of which boils down to never really hearing the word no and maybe being a bit callous and naive because of it. she's also the most mer in the au because anakin was human for 21 years and obi-wan was human for likeee ~15 years (?) but padmé has been mer all her life and would never want to be human - she's fascinated by anakin, but not in the same way obi-wan was by the humans when he first discovered them and i love trying to distinguish that

#interview with the vampire #i just found and watched a video on youtube that is a lestat hate and rant about his fans and it was so SO cathartic #i dont even agree with everything said and was naturally at first skeptic of a youtuber's opinion #but finally FINALLY there is a louder voice of someone who can see things about this show from another point of view #even if it's a pov that's more strict than the one i use to analyze media myself #i thought i was going crazy when seeing the fan opinions surrounding this show. mostly out there but sometimes here too #like yeah with how popular loustat is i knew there would be plenty of bias for the angle that flatters it #but the things ive seen lestat & loustat fans say.... the longing for eye bleach was real #but finally someone is there to underline that hey. that very present very intentional racial and power dynamics are in fact very real.#do in fact influence the characters accordingly. and does not come out of thin air or just 'the circumstances'#it's valid to explore the other side of the coin in louis' character of course. but it doesnt mean that it's not there #mind you. all of that shit louis described? is while insisting he was not 'an abused person'#and its so satisfying to see how someone can pass all the bullshit and have the serenity of heart to recognize that #regardless of everything else. there is a reason why louis felt like lestat was a predator and he was being preyed on #that is because he largely was. lestat *was* a vampire on the hunt. an emotional vampire to boost along with the more literal sense #he might disagree to be doing that on a conscious level and he might have clear reasons to have the instincts he does. he still did that #thank you for also calling bullshit on the reunion scene dialogue and parts of the trial in how it was trying to frame certain things #its the main reason why s2 didnt fully work for me. like jesus christ.#that man literally was part of a ploy to murder their daughter. one thing that must be said about coriolanus and katniss is that they both share such a snarky inner voice that despite the seriousness of thg saga (especially mockingjay - the last chapters almost reduced me to tears, it was that heavy) it made me chuckle more than a few times

#coryo is such a petty bitch tho sjehdhdh #there are interesting similarities but also very stark differences!#1. they both have an obvious fixation on food and their growth was somewhat stunted by malnutrition #2. they both have a special memory token from one of their (dead) parents and are emotionally distant from the other #3. they're both survivors (katniss even describes snow in mockingjay as 'the consummate survivor') but coryo relies on his charm and cunning #(a lot of what he shows outwardly is a carefully trimmed performance)#while she's a born hunter and also quite smart but not a planner (actually i'd say katniss can be quite impulsive sometimes)#but she's also forced to perform (in completely different circumstances and a life or death situation)#and i think that's one of the reasons snow thinks everything that comes out of her mouth is a lie. he's projecting #the major difference so far is obviously that coryo is such a snob asshole lmao #but... unpopular opinion: he doesn't start as evil incarnate and i don't understand how people could come out of tboas with this take #that's the point! he gets corrupted by his own choice #but the boy he used to be (as much as he was a capitol born and bred elitist not exactly endorsed #with a huge capability for emotional depth and human warmth) would be horrified by a lot of the crimes he committed later in his life #so far he's just an annoying teenager. emotionally stunted and not very sincere but not an evil guy by any means #anyway both his and katniss' sarcasm are a++#val rereads thg #val speaks #val rambles in the tags #txt

Ofc it's fanfiction so it doesn't really matter and I firmly believe anyone is allowed to write even the most ooc bs ever because that's what fanfics are for, to do whatever the hell you want, so that's a slight to no one and just me putting my thoughts out there

So yeah, I'm not saying wei wuxian has to be the smartest, the genius and the prodigy, especially if it's not about him, but he IS very intelligent and making him act stupid and not in a playful way but in serious situations where he is making things worse or depending on others to explain obvious things to him is really weird and feels as if an author either didn't understand his character or just doesn't like him

And again, it's weird for me bc all the time I'm saying that fanfics are for writing whatever you wish but at the same time... sometimes I just want to complain a bit about things I hate 😅
