One way or another, they had all been dragging their feet…

Grif didn’t want to do anything that might be similar to “leaving the group” again. Tucker liked having all his friends in one place (where he could find them). The others all had gotten comfortable with their various routines on Chorus, but the facts were; Wash was getting much better. They didn’t need to be here anymore. It was time for a break. From being here, from crazy adventures, from each other. Not forever, not because they hated one another, not for any horrible dramatic reasons… it was just something that they needed. They knew they needed it.

That didn’t mean they hadn’t been dragging their feet, though. Still, even if you drag your feet, as long as you keep moving, you eventually get there.

Now it was time.

Before committing to any decisions, Carolina suggested they make sure it would be safe for them to travel where ever they might care to go. At certain points in the past, a few of them (if not ALL of them) had been called criminals… if they were still wanted, for any reason, it would be dangerous to start moving around. They had to know what they were potentially up against, and then they could be prepared.

It was risky even doing this; basically every “official organization” that made the rules had screwed them over… or literally tried to kill them. They might still want them dead just to cover up all the embarrassing failures and illegal behavior. President Kimball was more than willing to offer them protection on Chorus if it came to that, but nobody wanted to pull this planet into ANOTHER war; it was decided that if they were threatened, they would just go on the run (a few of them were almost half-way hoping for this… it would mean they’d have to stick together).

Wonders never ceased; it seemed that those in charge of whatever circus that called itself the “government” had decided the best way to cover things up was to give the Reds and Blues (as well as the friends they were associated with) the royal treatment. All past crimes, both known and unknown, were forgiven and pardoned. This didn’t sit right with them for a few reasons (not the least of which being… they still felt guilty over certain incidents. They had made mistakes as well as bad decisions. Even so, they didn’t trust the same groups that caused so much pain to “judge” them for their guilt- this was something they would live with and attempt to reconcile on their own terms).

Each of them had full permission to travel anywhere they would like to go, and were offered special transportation. Because it was smart to be suspicious, the group didn’t fully trust this offer… it could all be a ploy to get them alone, somewhere secluded, then eliminated. They wanted it to be made public knowledge that they weren’t going to held responsible for the mistakes caused by the UNSC, Project Freelancer, or all the other establishments that had treated their lives (and so many others) like a game.

Thankfully, they knew a reporter who would make sure the story spread like wildfire.

Dylan Andrews had already gotten several exclusive stories from the Reds and Blues, and she had a pretty good relationship with them on top of that; simply put, they liked her. For all their faults and odd behavior, she liked them too.She was also somebody who not only cared about the truth, but also what was right and wrong. Some secrets didn’t need to be told, and occasionally lies were necessary as a form of protection... but you needed proper perspective to see the difference between those situations and actual corruption.

They agreed to meet with her, talk with her, and once the rest of the universe (the parts that watched TV, anyway) had heard their side of the story… MAYBE they would take up the offer for the transportation.

After about one week of talking, going over what parts of their stories they want to tell, back-tracking, arguing with each other about what REALLY happened back in the day, and lots of editing, Andrews has everything she needs and the group is satisfied. They kept a few little bits out… although they (mostly) told Andrews everything relevant (plus lots of extra nonsense, was certainly amusing, just not important), they each asked her to cut certain things. She fully respected their wishes, and soon the story is ready to be told in a way that will hopefully make sense to people that haven’t been “in the know”.

There had been at least a couple of occasions when they were called heroes before… and were even a little famous over it. None of that had saved them from getting thrown under the bus when it was convenient for those in authority to do so. They weren’t asking for any parades or ceremonies… in fact, after this story was out for all to see, they’d rather be left alone.

That seems to be the biggest issue; the government wants to put them on a pedestal and show them off like a prize. “Look at our little toy soldiers, please be distracted by the pretty colors of their armor and forget about all the horrible war crimes we forced them to be part of”.

Instead, the plan is to prove that they are more than that. The plan also involves using these videos as an insurance policy; if they suddenly started to drop dead, fingers would get pointed. If nobody wants to get blamed for killing the Reds and Blues, they needed to play along.

Falling Inn Love (2019) dir. Roger Kumble

summary:

When city girl Gabriela spontaneously enters a contest and wins a rustic New Zealand inn, she teams up with bighearted contractor Jake Taylor to fix and flip it.

Spoilers, duh, but you can enjoy this movie even if you know exactly what’s going to happen next, just like how everyone who watched it for the first time did. In fact, you don’t even have to read this review to guess what happens in this film. Without reading spoilers beforehand, you could probably guess 90% of the unremarkable plot points in this predictable and bland rom-com.

My biggest general problem with Falling Inn Love is that every single character has absolutely no personality. On top of that, each aspect of their personality (or lack thereof) is pretty much only included for the sake of furthering the plot. I’m pretty sure if you took away the characters’ main defining features, you would have the amount of fucks the writers put into developing their characters. They’re just not appealing, relatable, or interesting.

For example, the main character herself. Gabriela’s entire backstory is that she broke up with her boyfriend Dean. That’s literally all we get. You could not ask me to describe what I think Gabriela’s views on orgies, communism, or vegans look like. I should be familiar enough with the character to answer at least one of those. If I had to, I’d say she appreciates vegans, but that’s only because her entire personality is green housing and renovations and clean solar power and energy efficiency. You could not tell me if she planned to secretly run away from home as a child, but at least I know she brings her iPad to dinner with her boyfriend to show him her closet renovation ideas. This is a biiiig example of characters only being the way they are in order to further the plot, but also an example of the writers’ irregularity of bringing backstory into the story. Gabriela’s save-the-planet can-do attitude is only ever applied to the inn, when she decides to stay and renovate it into a clean energy facility. Not when she’s driving her clunky, CO2-emitting van all around town to places to which she could easily walk, which I’m sure is like the top biggest tip to saving the planet—to walk, bike, or take public transportation. Minus ½ star for hypocrisy.

The one thing I could tell you about Gabriela, besides that she sure does love her solar panels, is that she has an awful amount of Main Character syndrome, where she believes everything is about her and the entire world rotates around her. I’m fairly sure that wasn’t the writers’ intention, but they sure projected a ton of pride and self-esteem onto a pretty lackluster character, making her seem conceited. When Jake bumps into Gabriela at the hardware store, she says, “Why are you everywhere that I am?” Seems like she’s got a lot of confidence in her importance and relevance to Jake for someone who has no personality!!!!! It could just be a small town and Jake’s just minding his own business and knowing more about home renovation than Gabriela, which she finds annoying because she’s a strong, independent woman who takes no shit from men.

Charlotte is probably the world’s most pathetic villain. Her hobby is owning a hotel filled with porcelain dolls that belonged to her mother and the stink of old people breath. That’s all we know about her. Oh, and she really, really, really wants to buy the Bluebird from Gabriela because she’s an inn supremacist and believes only she can host an inn that restores the value of tradition and honesty to society. It’s so sad.

Jake has no personality. His backstory is that his girlfriend died 3 years ago and so he’s reluctant to love. That’s a new one. I wonder where the writers came up with that. He likes possum taxidermy because it reminds him of his grandmother. He likes to help out literally everywhere, for free, because he’s just such a nice guy. That’s all there is to him.

Even in Harry Potter, where you could clearly sort each member of the Golden Trio into a very obvious stereotype, you could still find more in-depth characterization beneath. Remove Hermione’s book-nerd, know-it-all personality. Underneath, she’s still a sassy, exasperated girl who cares for her friends and would choose them over anything. She’s flawed, and will act on her annoyance in rash, but calculated ways. Remove Ron’s comedic best friend, runt of the pack personality. Underneath, he’s loving and loyal, and is tired of simply being seen as the nobody. Finally, Harry himself, who beneath the Chosen One archetype, is snarky and witty and driven. Though fairly common and typical, there are multiple layers to these characters, which you just don’t get in Falling Inn Love. But Han, you say, that’s the appeal of a rom-com. You get to see how characters react to specific tropes. Fine, but I raise you this: pacing errors and plot convenience (woo alliteration!).

Similarly to the previous point, not only do the characters’ personalities seem to serve no purpose but to create a coherent plot, but in fact, almost everything that occurs in this movie seems to just happen out of thin air. There is literally no reason or motive behind any of the plot points, which is an indicator of a very weak story. It’s as if the writers had two plot points laid out— “Jake and Gabriela kiss” and “Gabriela decides to stay in New Zealand because she discovers she loves the Bluebird inn”— and halfassedly crammed in as many of the most contrasting tropes as they could find underneath a Wattpad novel from 2013 titled Falling for the Jock. Minus 1 star for plot convenience.

Gabriela’s boyfriend Dean is a douchebag. He is always on his phone during dates, cannot shut up about his job (Man, that sure does sound like someone else we know) and is always having his manager make decisions for the both of them. But Gabriela doesn’t break up with him beacuase he’s inattentive and ignorant. She breaks up with him because he doesn’t want to move in with her. Not wanting to move in with someone is a perfectly valid opinion to have, and Dean even gives a good reason: he’s happy with the things are now. And sure, you could break up with a partner if you felt strongly enough about things, but it would have to be a mutual understanding, an agreement that your lives were being hindered by this decision, or a realization that you both want different things. When Gabriela dumps Dean, it is entirely her end of the rope that is left hanging. It doesn’t feel like a satisfying ending to the first chapter. It feels forced, and that’s because they need Gabriela to apply for the Win an Inn scam. If Gabriela had dumped Dean because he didn’t put enough effort into the relationship, at least we would have felt happy for her, knowing that she deserved better. But because she dumped him because he didn’t want to move in with her and her eco-friendly dishwashers, we’re left thinking, Wow, that was pathetic.

There’s also a scene where Gabriela’s close (and only?? we’re not led to see any of her other friends, but then again, maybe she has none) friend tells her to give Dean an ultimatum—that’s what she did to get her boyfriend to propose to her. This is supposed to look like bad advice from an unqualified friend, since later the same friend tells Gabriela that she’s attending couple’s therapy with her fiancée, because apparently forcing your partner to either marry you or break up with you could lead to trouble in paradise. Who knew? Even though the movie makes it appear that ultimatums are not what to do in a strained relationship, that’s essentially what Gabriela does internally to Dean. Move in with me or we’re done. Minus ½ star for hypocrisy.

Falling Inn Love is supposed to be an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story. But the pacing of Gabriela and Jake’s relationship is so out of control that it doesn’t seem realistic at all whatsoever. They go from being at each others’ necks constantly, always exchanging cliche retorts, to smiling lovingly at the other in the span of two minutes. Once again, nothing happens to spur on this change. All of the sudden, they’re acting completely civil to on another and now there’s a romance out of nowhere. It’s not realistic or believable.

The climax of Falling Inn Love was probably my least favorite part about it. After Charlotte’s creepy doll hotel is burned down, she, Jake, Gabriela, and the contractor meet to discuss the selling of the Bluebird. And oh boy. After 90 whole-ass minutes of Gabriela claiming she wants to sell the inn, she suddenly gives a Dramatic and Raw speech about keeping ahold of what’s precious to you. Actually, I’m not completely sure if that was she was talking about because it wasn’t worth listening to the entire thing. It was only like 20 seconds, but it was just like every other speech where the main character drastically changes their mind for the better. It was just sad. And after her motivational speech? Charlotte, after 90 whole-ass minutes of trying to buy the Bluebird and get Gabriela to forfeit her inn through most likely illegal manners, nods admirationally and tells Gabriela, “You’re one of us now.” Like, what even happened there? What exactly happened to make Charlotte change her mind? Wouldn’t she want to buy the inn even more now that she doesn’t have one of her own? I know no one with such high demands who would back down that easily, at such a lame speech. For that, Charlotte is a weak antagonist, and lowers the rating by ½ a star, because shouldn’t you despise the antagonist? Shouldn’t you have a little crawling feeling in your stomach whenever they appear onscreen. For me, that was true, but only because she looks like Hannah Meloche and her sickly, whiny voice made me want to throw myself off a cliff.

About halfway through the movie, Charlotte texts Dean from Gabriela’s phone, telling him to bring her back to America if he really loves her. Firstly, why doesn’t Miss Badass have a passcode on her phone?? But when Dean finally arrives to New Zealand to take Gabriela back, there’s no mention of the text. There’s not even a simple “How did you know when the opening launch party was?” “Why are you here? I did not invite you,” on Gabriela’s end, and a “You asked me to take you back, that’s what I’m here to do,” on Dean’s end. It feels like we didn’t get closure on something that was really hyped up to create suspense.

Week 4 Blogpost 3 - Ito (Charlotte)

While reading the Ito reading this week, I was struck by how relevant and similar this reading was to my life as I’ve experienced and continue to display every single type of genres of presence. This reading posits that mobile media interfaces particular locations & infrastructures in an urban environment, and how eventually convergences happen between such media. The studies were conducted in 3 major cosmopolitan cities of Tokyo, London and Los Angeles, cities that are in many ways similar to vastly urban Singapore. The 3 genres of presence that Ito mentions are then cocooning, encampment and last but not least footprinting

Cocooning is labelled by Ito as a behaviour that an individual displays when using mobile media to provide his/herself a personalised media environment, a private space within a public transit one which shelters the individual from local, social & spatial interactions. This is something I experience whenever I’m out of the house, in transit areas like queueing up for food in foodcourts, on public transport, or waiting for someone in a public area. I always bring along my mobile kit of my phone and at least one pair of earphones so that I can kill time by watching a video, or merely drown out the constant hustle & bustle (given that Singapore is always crowded) with music or a podcast. This is so much so that I have specifically bought noise-cancelling earphones, to optimise my listening experience and fully drown out unnecessary chatter when I’m out. The point Ito mentions about using such behaviour to avoid harassment really struck me, as this transforms a simple behavior of personalising your time spent outdoors, to a subtle mode of defense. I have been under such circumstances before, and have used this small but extremely useful gesture of being plugged in to avoid harassment.

Camping is then labelled by Ito as a behavior that an individual displays by designating a personal workspace encampment to a public place of their choice by bringing portable media. As a student, this is a perfect summary of the Singaporean student culture of designating cafes and libraries as personal study spaces. For myself, Ito’s reasoning of why this happens perfectly mirrors mine, in that people appropriate places where they feel some affinity and see it as desirable, as well as scheduling time to spend there and preparing a specifically tailored mobile kit. Personally, I love studying at the Coffee Bean at ION Orchard (during pre-COVID times), as I love how its in a central location and easily accessible, yet it is quiet enough to be conducive to studying and has gorgeous chestnut decor and warm lighting that I absolutely love. Whenever I study there, I specifically pick the spots with charging, so I tailor my mobile kit by including chargers, as well as my laptop to make use of the complimentary Wi-Fi there. Additionally, the food and drinks available, as well as the friendly staff make it an even more attractive place to study there for hours with almost everything I need at my fingertips.

This point Ito made about electronic footprinting depersonalising people’s interacing with urban infrastructures draws me back to the Nosedive episode, where interaction that used to flower from goodwill and reciprocity is now replaced by a cold rewards system that takes the joy of human interaction & customer service completely out of the equation. On the other hand, electronic footprinting has helped those who dont carry a wallet around. This is especially so in Singapore where the electronification of transactions has been vastly accelerated where now we can conveniently pay for items at most stores with our phones, use the public transport by tapping our phones, and even enter public spaces safely using the trace-together app on our phones. Electronic footprinting has now become a normalised way of life in Singapore for a minority, but it may well be a way of life for the majority in a few years time.

brussels, belgium

We woke up at 5:30 to catch our flight, and as soon as we were packed up and ready to go, we realized the flight was half an hour later than we expected. We could have slept in longer, but we decided to get breakfast at a convenience store instead of paying double the price in the Copenhagen airport. On the plane, the lady in the seat next to me unfortunately had no concept of personal space. I’m glad I could lean into the window. 

We had to take an hour long bus from the airport we flew into, and from the station in Brussels, we had to take another 45 minutes worth of public transportation to get to our Airbnb. It felt like 7 pm at this point because of all the traveling, but it was only 1:30 in the afternoon. All the cute little streets had already stolen my heart already. Also, the balconies are so precious.

After we dropped all our stuff off at the Airbnb, we hopped on a metro to Atomium and Mini Europe. The Atomium is a giant atom made out of tiny Belgian atoms (as Grace put it), and that’s wild to think about. 

Mini Europe is a little amusement park created by the European Union that has monuments from every country in the EU. We were a little on the fence about going, but the thought of seeing a tiny monument from Prague convinced us. 

Here’s a tiny model of Nyhavn in Copenhagen that we saw the previous day. Not as cool as the real thing. 

Some perspective on the size of the models. 

Some of the countries had 6 or 7 monuments, but Prague only had one: the Astronomical Clock. I feel that there are more structures that represent Prague more (like the Charles Bridge or the Prague Castle, but maybe that’s because the Astronomical Clock is under construction until after we leave in May. It was cool to see a tiny version that isn’t covered in scaffolding! 

I also loved to see all the places I have been and some of the places that I will be going, like the blue church from Bratislava, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the baths in Budapest, and more. It made me more excited for the future and it made me appreciate the past a little bit more. 

After Mini Europe, our next stop was Manneken Pis closer to the center of the city. Much like the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, this was a bit underwhelming and flooded with so many other tourists that it was so hard to get a picture. 

We were hungry at this point, and being surrounded by so many people who were eating waffles, we decided that waffles were the best choice for us. I chose a pretty little number covered in melted Nutella. I’m drooling.

We finished our waffles and headed to the Grand Place. The buildings were so incredibly decorated with gold, and they even looked good in the rain. I even met up with a friend from freshman year; it was nice to catch up, and I’m glad it happened in such a beautiful European city.

We got some hot chocolate and water and started to go back towards the Airbnb, but we impulsively got off at a bus stop that looked pretty because we didn’t really have any plans for the rest of the night.

It turns out it was the royal stop where the palace and the surrounding buildings were, and the sunset looked super cool reflecting off some of the buildings.

We finally went back to the dorm to rest with full intentions of going out for a drink in a few hours, but we ended up falling asleep for the night, which I was totally fine with.

Happy Easter!! We woke up and packed all our things to check out and go to breakfast at a cafe that claimed to be open 24 hours. It wasn’t exactly relevant for our needs, but the quiche, apple pie, and cappuccino for breakfast were delicious.

I just have to emphasize again how CUTE all the houses and balconies are. I love them. I could walk these streets for hours (if my feet weren’t absolutely killing me).

We went back to the Royal Palace and the gardens in front of it just to spend a bit more time there. Before we got to the Palace, the bus stop had some cute flower patches we had to stop at. 

The palace looked mostly the same as the previous night (what else would you expect??).

The gardens are huge. They seem like they go on for miles, and I wish we could’ve seen them in bloom.

We stumbled upon St. Catherine’s Cathedral on the way towards Grand Place. 

Again, balconies.

We went into the courtyard of the city hall, and we were surprised with so many colorful flowers. It smelled like actual spring, and I was so happy. 

We went back to the Manneken Pis to see if it was dressed up for Easter, and when we got there, we saw a tiny vampire up there. Not sure why.

At this point, I was ready for more food, so we got some Belgian frites. I got mine with “American sauce.” It kinda looks gross. I think it was some kind of combination of mayo, ketchup, buffalo sauce, and a lot of herbs. It was good, and only enhanced the flavor of the fries. 

We went to the ChocoStory museum to look at some chocolate information and watch a little demonstration with a sample. It was worth the 5 euro to get out of the rain, and I would’ve paid that just for the demonstration because the guy was so funny, and we got the sample of the treat we watched him make at the end. 

After that, we headed to our last stop with a couple of Belgian beers: the Cinquantenaire.

We started towards the airport, and that closed our weekend in two different countries. I had a great time, but I’m very exhausted and very excited to be back in Prague. I even got to do my laundry as soon as I got back!

Differences between Brussels and Prague

The buildings in Brussels seem to have a lot more uniformity

We heavily relied on buses in Brussels, and in Prague, this isn’t necessary

Brussels had fewer stands for street food; most were built into the buildings. In Prague, especially in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, there are a lot of free-standing food stands. 

There was a lot more ethnic diversity in Brussels. I got used to seeing predominantly white people in Prague, and there were a lot more people of different races in Brussels.

There were also a lot more languages on restaurant signs, even including Arabic. I barely see that in Prague.

There are a lot more EU flags in Brussels.

10 things you need to know for your first few weeks

A guide by our International Orientation Team.

First of all, welcome to Monash University and we hope for those of you who made time to visit the International Student Lounge this week, that you met some new friends and learned a little more about Monash. We can’t wait to meet each of you and involve you in the Monash community. 

Here are a few quick tips to prepare you for Orientation Week.

1.      Smile, talk, ask, listen, and talk again

During your first weeks, you will have many orientation events to attend, and they are the best way to make new friends and meet people from all around the world. Everyone there is in the same situation, so don’t be shy, introduce yourself, and talk to the other students! If you don’t feel comfortable starting conversations with random people, you can always look for that lonely person in the room who is probably feeling just like you. It can be the beginning of an awesome friendship!

2.      Public transportation: Meet Myki

To use the public transportation in Melbourne you will need a Myki card. You can get one from the Myki machines in every train station in the city. With a Myki card in hand, all you need to do is purchase credit by cash or card at the same station Myki machines every time you need to travel by bus, tram or train. You also need to validate your Myki every time you get on or off a tram, bus or train station. Otherwise, if the Myki patrol catches you travelling without a valid ticket, you can get a fine, and you don’t want that! (Go to http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki for more info)

3.      Get a ‘Proof of Age’ Card

Losing your passport is not fun; it takes time and money to get a new one. However, it happens more often than you might think. But you can avoid many risky situations by requiring carrying a Proof of Age Card with you instead of your passport when going to bars, pubs and clubs. You can apply for a Proof of Age Card at participating Australia Post Offices, selected pharmacies or chemists (go to www.vcglr.vic.gov.au/utility/community/young+people/proof+of+age/ for more info).

4.      Keep an eye on your spending

Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity for you to grow and be more independent. And one of the most important steps is controlling your finances. To make sure you won’t be completely broke by the end of the month, try to plan and record every expense in an app or notebook, or create a document on your computer. If you have some money left by the end of the month and/or need to save money for a trip, you can schedule regular transfers of money to your savings account (check this possibility with your bank).

5.      Getting an Australian phone number

Maybe, just maybe, wearing one outfit for two or three days, only having one pair of shoes for several types of occasions and wearing the same jewelry might help their financial goals. Maybe, just maybe, cutting out most of the foods on the 30 day challenge might actually mean other stuff more important can suddenly become affordable.
