I think my thoughts on the penultimate episode can be summoned up as disappointment over a potential we didn't get to see, and why that's ok. (This got long, 1.4k oops lol)

Am I a fan of The Rat Grinders? ABSOLUTELY. I think I started liking them even more when they were full-on confirmed villains. As fan's of the edited show, watching with a week between each episode to theorize and think, I loved seeing and theorizing over these 6 fucked up kids. We know Kipperlily prior to the second half of sophomore year, while she obviously still had her anger and jealousy over TBK's it wasn't ENTIRELY unjustified and completely out of control (although some aspects were utterly and absolutely unfounded and ridiculous). Jawbones file mentions her language being "I think Aguefort likes them more", "The school takes it easy on them", and "Half of them don't even go to classes." All of these are true things people in this world would notice. It's not until AFTER their Mountain of Chaos chaperoned trip, at the end of the year, that KLCK switches to "I hate them." The Bad Kids further briefly discuss if Jace would have asked Jawbone/looked for "students with rage disorders." I think specifically mention it being a disorder is important. Acknowledging its there, KLCK WAS trying to get help for an issue she had. They didn't talk to Jawbone about it, but did decide Jace must have given he went on that quest with TRG's. They further briefly talk about students getting randomly mad, and yes they specifically joked about Fabian shitting in class, but WE also remember the Soil club student getting so mad after having gotten that tainted soil. With the 30 Riz rolled, Jawbone's file ALSO specifically talks about Kipperlily loving her adventuring party. We know things weren't perfect, its obvious from when talking about their name change, but its still there and canon. Kipperlily loved her adventuring party. This is all just Kipperlily, mostly with our information from the first part of ep.16. It is not touching on the rest of the members, especially Ruben and his dreamscape we saw, or of his distinct 180 musical tastes POST Sophomore Year Spring Break. The implications of something happening to them during that time is pretty evident and acknowledged. So we're fans, watching a show, spending so much time thinking about not only our infamous protagonists, but also our villains. Many of us adults, getting older, thinking on the tragedy befalling kids and feeling empathy. So yeah. It's a disappointment over an unseen potential. Specifically tho? Its the potential we could have gotten on The Rat Grinder's thoughts and motivations that could have been revealed through dialogue. Dialogue that we got very little of in what could be considered a significant exchange of dialogue and not bits. I always have high narrative expectations from this show, due to its long standing history of SETTING those standards each and every season. This one episode just fell short emotionally while watching, comparatively.

AND THAT'S OK AND ABSOLUTELY NOT THE BAD KIDS/INTREPID HEROES FAULT

On the narrative side of things, The Bad Kids have had an incredibly stressful past 3 years. From day one, they have been involved in life or death stakes situations. It's always been do or die, and they've died, sometimes more than once. They've lost people and faced traumas that go often unaddressed. TBK's ENTIRE highschool experiences have been a revolving door of violence and unhinged situations. They've also always kinda been assholes, insular and more than a little mean especially to those pegged as enemies. We know them, know they have good hearts and intentions, and love and side with them constantly throughout because The Bad Kid's are our heroes. They are still teenage assholes sometimes, but that is something we love and forgive them for. The thing about this recent battle is that they are very used to the situation they are in by now. TBK's have to prioritize, move fast and hard, and get a job done so countless people don't die while something evil rises in their world. Emotions have been high for them all season, rage especially which is absolutely unsurprising on multiple fronts, and it's absolutely showing in what few dialogue exchanges we have. The Bad Kid's entered that gym for the singular purpose of stopping the situation, saving lives, and making sure something evil didn't arise to power in their fucked up world. Nothing new. They hid, already knowing where the final confrontation was going to be FORCED to happen in due to the nature of the ritual, and prepped. On point and smart of them. Then they entered the battlefield, very quickly getting to business. They know their skills, their friends and how to work together as a devastatingly effective team making heavy hits and masterfully controlling a battlefield despite the chaos. This is what The Bad Kid's Do. They got Ivy and Oisin out of combat as fast as possible, Oisin didn't even get a turn. They took out a high-damage long range attacker and the enemy wizard. They know how powerful and important Adaine is on the field, and they knew Oisin would have been the same. They crippled the enemy with the slow spell, effectively taking Mary Ann out of the running until it gets dispelled later on. Fig saw Ruben's high damage level 9 spell and dropped her ploy to get him out of combat as soon as she could. It was too dangerous to have him up, and while the hell bit was uncomfortable in the moment, it is absolutely on brand. This is what they have to do, if they want to stop Porter, who is our real main big-bad. Remove as many obstacles from the battle so more of them can focus on the fight that really matters.

This combat wasn't ever gonna go any other way, unless the dice gods decided otherwise.

This is what The Bad Kid's Do. In regards to the IH's, it is VERY important to acknowledge that while I've mentioned having high narrative expectations, this is still primarily an improve comedy show around a group of real people's DnD game. It's also a show they have a tight filming schedule for, with back to back days and long hours which we KNOW from the talk-backs leave them very tired. Like any tv show they also have a limit on how many episodes per season they can even produce. I think it was a real and genuine benefit to Sophomore year that they were doing it live, because it gave more time between sessions for the IH's to mull over information and whats been happening in-game. This is also a very well developed campaign world they haven't played in several years, which I certainly know would effect me in how I played. We still have one more episode, the Finale, and so much always happens there. I have incredible faith in Brennan as a DM and storyteller, for all that his players have a huge say in how any story he tells unfolds. There is a VERY real chance that what happens in the finale completely changes my mind on episode 19, and I will go back to rewatch with absolute glee because I know of the coming emotional catharsis in relation to The Rat Grinders. There is also a very real chance we don't get that in the way we want it, but that will be ok too. I will still love this season, rewatch it and laugh and have fun. The best part of having a fandom, is watching us take canon apart to fuel endless au's, fix-it's, character studies, ect. Taking crumbs and going wild with it is par the course, especially when something in a show has left us wanting in the moment of watching it. I think more than anything, I would be and am more upset from infighting and genuine anger directed to each other and especially towards our Intrepid Heroes. It is not wrong to be upset with an episode of a show, but it is to take those feelings out on others, be in in defense from Rat Grinder's fans or justification from Rat Grinder haters. So yes! I was disappointed with this particular episode emotionally. I still think it was funny, I think the combat was brilliant and fun to watch. I still love this show and this cast, and could never dream of being mad at them for how they played a game, and for the fun they were finding within the act of playing it as the well-known unhinged improv comedians we know and love.

I'm excited for next week, buuut I am absolutely consuming fan-content to help deal with my emotions, both the highs and lows.

I’m going to throw this under a cut, it’s mostly just personal stuff and idk. I don’t care who reads it particularly but also I think it’s nice to put rambles under the jump cut. 

I recognize I SHOULD reach out to my rabbi (not today, not right before shabbat, but in general just to talk because I need to talk) and I SHOULD find a therapist to talk to and I SHOULD do a lot of things but actually my brain is just a merry-go-round of “I’m okay, but I’m not? Things are okay, but they are bad actually?” i should be journaling in my real deal journal! but i’m not? 

I didn’t have my adderall refilled for a month and now i’m back on it again and am a little jumpy (this will usually settle away after a day or two). the med tech asked how i was doing with my anxiety and depression and it’s surreal to be like “oh my normal baseline clinical anxiety and depression are fine, it’s the situational part that is out of control” and try to have that...be understandable lol. 

I keep telling myself I, personally, am okay. I am secure in ways I wasn’t before b’’h. I am doing better. a LOT better. i recognize this. I feel like I have been...not able to engage as Jewishly as I really want which is upsetting to me. I’m not sure what to re-focus on doing so that I am engaged again. 

but also simultaneously, while I the individual am okay, there is a lot that is not okay that makes me...less okay? not just the world in general, but my little brother (19 yo) has been lying to family for months about various things (and usually gets caught out) for MONTHS. 

last fall he was supposed to be starting community college, he had a full time(!) job and I was so so proud. But then it began to unravel. He quit his job (partly because they fired his friend, and partly because they were disorganized and had no one to train him to do his job apparently?). Then without telling anyone right before the pandemic hit, he dropped out of school. (not even online classes, just dropped out totally. and lied.) 

then he started claiming he was dating this girl he met online (which is not bad PER SE) but she is maybe 16?? too young!!! at some point he took himself to the hospital psych ward, which is fine, he’s allowed to do that and get help if he needs. and then after midnight on my mother’s birthday in april he asked if he could just “Get out of the house” for the night and rent a hotel room “nearby”. my mom said okay, and let him borrow her truck. there’s many details missing here like our cousin M found out about his real plan and tried to stop him, told her dad, who tried to warn my mom i guess, who knows. well, come to find out that his “nearbye” was not in the same STATE even. He ended up flipping her truck in NEW MEXICO. he was fine, but he totaled her truck. 

mom gets new truck per insurance payout. brother is fine. except last weekend(?) my mom texts me asking if I heard from my brother, the answer was no. apparently he stole $4,500 from my grandparents by going to the atm with my nana’s debit card. when she called the bank to report fraud, she had to keep calling back for DAYS. she cried. my brother said nothing. she of course, filed a police report because an atm withdrawal doesn’t look like a fraud case, it looks like spending your own money. but once the police report is on file, the bank pulled the atm video records. and they have my brother on tape. 

so he committed a felony on tape (thinking I guess, that the bank would obviously just pay it back to my grandparents, all this money they saved and saved to replace furniture and make home repairs, they are broke, literally bankrupt.) and then I had to spend the weekend convincing my mother that davka even people caught red handed should demand to speak with legal counsel. (she was very “he is taking responsibility for this!!!” oh sure, but he still needs a lawyer.) 

anyways my grandparents kicked him out (rightfully so they fed and housed him for most of his life and he steals nearly 5,000??? apparently he is claiming he owed the money to drug dealers (if true, he’s an absolute radish brain. his mother works for the local courts, his grandfather used to be a prison guard, his uncle worked gang/drugs task force for the local police, like...i’m the first one who didn’t even ATTEMPT ROTC or law enforcement at some point)

the last updates i have are: 1.) the local PD isn’t jailing anyone for non-violent crime right now due to COVID, as long as my brother turned himself in which is why i told my mother he needs a lawyer 2.) he’ll probably be able to vote again in our state after time served or like...parole or who knows what but still, of course he gets likely charged with a felony before his first election, bc my grandparents will probably need to pursue this to get any money back 3.) my mom is staying with him in a hotel, and they’re hoping to get him into a shelter bc ofc he QUIT HIS JOB and my grandparents RIGHTFULLY kicked him out for theft. and he has nowhere to go. even if i wasn’t across the country, I can’t take a literal bank theft/fraud criminal in my home because I work for a Bank. My uncle can’t take him, he’s a cop. our other uncle lives in the side-house at my grandparent’s. Our dad is in Mexico, and you can’t leave the country if you don’t have a passport, which my brother doesn’t. 

I’m furious at him and furious at my mother who honestly, was enabling some of his behavior in ways I would’ve never EVER been allowed to do as a kid. 

I want to scream. uuuuughhhhhhh. I told my mother MONTHS ago he was out of line and I wouldn’t have gotten as far as XYZ but no, grand theft auto of her truck wasn’t enough she waits until he commits theft related to drugs. he is NINETEEN.

elvin tupelo “elvie” croft was born in salem, massachusetts ( yes, really ) on halloween day ( yes, really ). he's an only child and his father is the district attorney for essex county, massachusetts while his mother owns a small local business that sells witchcraft supplies such as crystals, herbs, grimoires, and more. interesting fact: she’s the descendant of an accused witch, meaning that elvie is as well.

as it turns out, beneath of the surface of the few tourist attractions that it has to offer, salem has a small town, stuck in the past vibe. it’s the sort of place where everyone knows everyone all their lives because no one ever leaves and no one ever moves in. he grew up in this…eccentric…environment, living in the same house all his life and only ever leaving to visit his grandparents in boston.

he was five years old when he saw his first horror movie ( an apathetic teenage babysitter let him stay up long past his bedtime to watch nightmare on elm street ) and from that moment on he was HOOKED.

when he started school, two things about him became apparent: 1) he was highly intelligent and 2) he struggled greatly with tasks such as sitting still and staying focused. he was tested ( a few times, much to his irritation ) and it turns out that he has a genius level iq and adhd.

he could have been one of those child prodigies who finished high school at the age of ten and then college at the age of fourteen, BUT his parents decided that they didn’t want him to miss out on the experience of going through school with peers his own age.

HOWEVER, as the smartest kid in class with glasses and braces and an insatiable obsession with all things horror and halloween, he…was picked on. mercilessly. he never had many friends, but he was content to go right home after school and spend the rest of the day reading comic books or watching horror movies or researching local urban legends and paranormal stories.

so, when he got to his senior year of high school, he was a shoe - in to be named class valedictorian ( he was ) and he was even getting ivy league offers. of course, his parents mainly his father were really pushing him to attend college and elvie, genius level iq and all…didn’t want to go. he had a van ( a turquoise monstrosity painted to look like the mystery machine ) and he just wanted to drive. alas, his dad was absolutely NOT having it.

he attended harvard for both his pre law and law school studies, breezed through classes, graduated with honors at the top of his class and once he passed the bar exam there were countless job offers waiting for him. elvie ignored them all and finally embarked on that road trip he had been meaning to take.

he’s been on the road for about a year now and he’s traveled all over the country. he often breezes into a town or a city, lives in his van, and takes up some odd jobs to squeeze a few dollars out of before he inevitably gets fired for messing up or not taking the work seriously or getting high on the job. he arrived in springfield a month ago, continuing his pattern or having fun and exploring somewhere he’s never been before.

his name is elvin but basically no one ever calls him that. his own parents don’t even particularly like the name. long story. most people call him elvie and some who are super close to him just call him el.

BIG RYAN BERGARA ENERGY. a huge believer in the paranormal and urban legends, and one of his favorite things to do when he goes somewhere new is check out the local cemeteries and haunted locales. unlike ryan, the poor guy he’s definitely NOT a scaredy cat in fact, all his life there’s been this running joke that he doesn’t seem to be scared of anything, and who knows? maybe he isn’t.

has the most cartoonishly exaggerated boston accent that one could ever hope to hear, except he doesn’t seem to realize it at all.

most people don’t know how smart he actually is as he intentionally plays dumb and he’s really good at it. being high all the time and his natural chaotic energy is quite helpful in hiding his intelligence. he just doesn’t like to be seen as smart, so the whole once - brilliant law student thing? not common knowledge whatsoever. he tries not to mention the college he attended by name at all, but if he has to then he lies and says that he went to salem state.

and yes, he has SO MUCH chaotic energy. he’s the kind of person who will stick a fork in his microwave just to see what would happen out of sheer boredom. he has two pet mexican redknee tarantulas named freddy and jason who he just…fucking loses track of every other day. his favorite drink is literally black coffee mixed together with a can of monster energy and 5 ( f i v e ) teaspoons of sugar. he is c h a o s. he has absolutely NO IMPULSE CONTROL whatsoever.

he has slight Daddy Issues™. slight. when he was born, his dad was hoping that he would get a star athlete kid who would go on to follow in his footsteps and one day become a successful, respectable lawyer but instead he got…elvie. he’s never outright said that he’s disappointed but he didn’t need to. elvie’s a really difficult person to rattle but every time, without fail, he ends a phone call with his dad and he’s in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

even though he makes constant pop culture references about horror movies and the 80s, but outside of those areas he’s completely clueless about pop culture. like, he can recite the entire scripts of the shining and empire strikes back and ferris bueller’s day off word for word, but if someone tried to talk to him about the new beyonce song or the latest marvel movie he would just stare blankly.

he has a HUGE sweet tooth. his favorite food is halloween candy and his favorite candy is black licorice disgusting i know.

he takes adderall for his adhd and he’s usually good about keeping up with it. started keeping them on his person in college because he realized that his meds were getting stolen and it’s a habit he’s held onto that doesn’t really keep his shit from getting stolen.

he’s good at…A LOT of things because he’s a really fast learner. he can play the guitar, he can draw, he did drama in high school. he just has to watch someone do something once and then he can usually immediately do it himself. this skill doesn’t extend to physical activities such as sports, however. he’s terrible at those.

Hey, guys.

This post is somewhat self-reflection, processing, and validation, and somewhat PSA-ish/FYI-ish since I am posting it online.

Mental health is nuts. It affects everything. I took an Adderall this morning for the first time in over a month and a half, and it changes everything. I know I have shared about how Adderall changes everything for me before, but this time is different in some important ways because of the circumstances.

At some point during the spring semester this year, I began seeing a new PCP and a new psychiatrist, since I'm in a new city and actually have health insurance. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 29, this year. It was like a dream come true, because it was so incredibly validating, but also because I thought I would be able to get all the help I needed because I had this Very Important Answer now.

However, that was not the case. Upon diagnosis, I asked the psychiatrist if there were any support groups or resources that I could access to learn about my newly-confirmed Neuro-Divergent Brain™. She said she didn't know of any. So I have been learning about how my brain works through Youtube videos, Reddit posts, and the experiences that other people share with me.

At the same time that this was happening, I continued searching for answers about my ongoing mysterious health problems. One of the FIRST things that my PCP jumped on was to tell me, in clear terms, repeatedly, that I needed to ask my psychiatrist about putting me on something for "psychological pain." What she means by this is that she thinks that my body pain happens because of something going on in my brain, or that my brain is heightening normal aches and pains for some reason. And so I began taking Cymbalta (prescribed by the psych). This was later in the semester by now.

After being on the Cymbalta for about a month, I could no longer take my Adderall - I found that any time I took Adderall, I became extremely anxious, would physically shake and feel ill, and it was just all around a bad time. (Adderall is not a drug that you need to keep in your system - you can start it and stop it at any time. Cymbalta is one of those drugs that has to build up in your system. It takes like a minimum of two weeks to even start seeing how it affects you.) There was clearly something going on between the two drugs, so the clear choice was to not take the Adderall while I got in touch with the psych.

Now, at this time, I did not have an appointment set up with the psychiatrist, because she wanted to go two whole months before seeing me again (which seems like a really bad idea considering that I was still new on the Cymbalta... it baffled me when she told me that and I was not happy with it). So I made a mental note that I needed to make an appointment ASAP because this wasn't working.

Except... It's now July, and I still have not made an appointment. I have run out of Cymbalta and cannot get a refill because it needs to go through the doc. And I am in this situation because that's just how low-functioning I have been since starting the Cymbalta.

I needed to have been closely monitored. I needed to have frequent appointments. And when I didn't pick up the phone or return the calls to the psych's office, they should have kept calling me.This is the nature of mental illness. It controls everything. Your brain controls everything you do. I need someone to be assigned to my case to make sure that my life isn't falling apart, especially when I've been given new meds. I'm not the only one. And this isn't my first time going through something like this. The entire mental health field needs a lot of work.

Anyway... I haven't had Cymbalta in a few days, and I took Adderall today for the first time in a while. It's like putting glasses on. It's like an enormous heavy fog has been lifted. It's like I have been pulled out of a pool of molasses. 

So... I am now capable of making that appointment, which I actually needed months ago. How fucked up is that?

This is what it's like to be on the wrong meds, or to be unmedicated:

Every day for over a month, I have woken up every morning thinking about all of the really important things that needed doing, but as if I were chained to a pole or being held hostage in a cage, I could not do them. I was so sick that I had thoughts of telling Aaron that I needed help doing these things, but I couldn't even communicate it to him. That might sound impossible to someone who has never experienced any sort of mental illness or brain fog or executive dysfunction, but I and millions of other people are crying out about how so very real it is.

Today, after starting to gain some separation from the Cymbalta and after taking an Adderall, here are some things that have been different that I wasn't able to do before: 

- I told Aaron basically the above paragraph ^^^ (Contrast: remaining silent on these problems... not communicating my plight at all whatsoever) 

- I reached out to two (2) dear friends because I wanted to know how they are doing (Contrast: not reaching out to the people I love, ever) 

- I drink water when I notice thirst (Contrast: becoming so thirsty that it's too distracting to ignore, getting a headache, increased body aches) 

- I changed clothes once I recognized that what I was wearing was too warm (Contrast: suffering for hours until I felt sick from being too hot and couldn't do anything else, until doing something to alleviate that suffering) 

- easily and efficiently gave my body breakfast (Contrast: not eating anything until I feel sick/am extremely physically weak) 

- nearly automatically cleaned up after lunch (Contrast: leaving the mess until it's in the way at a later time) 

- easily and efficiently picked up some dishes and trash in the apartment (Contrast: seeing dishes/trash, thinking "I want to clean that up/put that away," and not being able to make my body do the thing) 

- not running into things when I walk around, being able to carry objects easily, and being able to efficiently pick up and put down multiple items without much effort. AKA - better motor control 

- scheduled a time to go grocery shopping today (and I'm going to make a grocery list and meal plan after I'm done typing this) (Contrast: another day without having gone grocery shopping, another day of fast food)

The list goes on and will continue to go on...

Shame on my PCP for pushing on the "psychological pain" thing instead of doing more to actually discover what is wrong with my body. Shame on me for seeing that red flag, but going along with it anyway. I feel like I'm constantly torn between wanting to trust medical professionals, who have had years and years of education and practice, and wanting to fight them. I thought I was in good hands. But add this onto the list of stuff that quickly built up with that doctor... I won't be seeing her again.

my college experience

College. I started college in 2016. I was excited that whole summer because I got to have a fresh start and leave high school behind me. I moved into a dorm with 3 girls I didn’t know. I chose to live with random girls that year because I wanted to meet new people. I rushed a sorority at the beginning of the school year, and I met a lot of fun and kind people throughout that week. I got into a seemingly great sorority at the end of rush week and then class began the following week. I really liked my schedule; I didn’t have any 8am classes and I didn’t have any classes at all on Friday’s. It felt like I was finally moving on and starting a new, positive chapter of my life. There was always something in the back of my mind that I felt like was holding me back, though…

I was extremely homesick. My school was only about 30 minutes away from my hometown, but I’m so close to my family, especially my mom, so it was hard for me. I have 3 half siblings, but I grew up as an only child, so it was a difficult transition from always having privacy and my own space to having to share my space with 3 other girls, random girls at that. They were sweet and I actually feel lucky that I got paired with normal people, but it was still hard regardless. I began coming home on weekends and then going back to my dorm during the week. As the first semester went on, I began to isolate myself more and I didn’t have as much ambition and excitement as I used to. By the time I came back from Christmas break and started the second semester, I lost touch with most of the friends that I made, and I felt as if I was the loneliest person in the world. I ended up leaving my sorority right before spring break, isolating myself even further.

Aside from being homesick and lonely, something else I was struggling with was a fear of gaining weight. I was terrified of gaining the “freshman fifteen” that year. I feel like I’ve always had a warped perception of what my body looks like. I’m not sure why that is. Anyways, because of this fear, I barely ate. And by barely ate, I mean I would eat one of those “on the go” sized cups of Cheerios during the day, and that would be it except for when I would go home on the weekends where I’d eat real food with my family. I would look in the mirror and I was never satisfied. I don’t want to say I had an eating disorder as I feel like it’d be disrespectful to people who struggle with life-altering eating disorders for years, but I think it was a result of genuine misery and extremely deep depression. I lost almost 20 pounds that year.

I finally made it through the year and summer began. I was able to move back home, and I got a job. I loved that summer because I was finally free from my freshman year shackles. I began to see a therapist to talk through what I went through mentally and emotionally in the past year and it seemed to have helped me for the time being. I also got diagnosed with ADD that summer which makes...too much sense. I’ve struggled in school my whole life and because of the diagnosis, I now understand why. I have over-focused ADD with OCD tendencies. I tend to obsess over and hang on to things well after others have moved on from it. I’ve been that way my whole life, and now I had an answer as to why. It also causes me to experience mood swings but the Adderall (a God send) I was prescribed helped me to control them, Anyways summer passed by quickly, and I ended up moving into an apartment with 3 girls I was friends with from high school. Sophomore year started and it was great. I was so happy, and it felt like my horrific freshman year was a lifetime ago. There are no “buts” coming about this year. It truly was a wonderful year in my life and it’s something I’ll always cherish when I look back on my hellish college experience as a whole. The next year, though, is a different story.

It’s a story I’m not going to get into. It’s personal and it involves others besides myself, but I respect their privacy and lives since we’ve moved on, so I won’t be going into detail. What I will say is that I have many regrets from this year. I did a lot of things that I’m not proud of and would give anything to go back and change them. I didn’t like the person I was that year looking back, and I still don’t understand why I began to revert back to my misery, maybe it never truly went away like I thought it did. Instead of taking it out on myself like my freshman year, I took it out on others. I now take full responsibility for what I did and the people I hurt as a result and that’s something that I feel like took me a long time to do. It was cruel and it’s something I don’t and won’t try to justify anymore. I’m proud to say that I learned from that experience and the person I was then, isn’t who I am now.

After my junior year, I got an internship working at a consulting company. I LOVED this job. I loved the people I met there and made more friends there than what felt like I had in the entirety of my college experience. Real friendships where we could actually bond over something other than just being in the same class like at school. I realized that I was much happier working in a professional environment than I had ever been at school which made me even more excited to graduate. At the end of the summer, the company offered to extend my internship throughout the school year, and I was THRILLED. I was so happy that I was going to be able to leave school and go somewhere where I actually wanted to be during the week.

My senior year started soon after this and it was just…fine. Not bad but not great either. Just fine. Like I said, I was just grateful to be able to have somewhere to go after class that wasn’t just my apartment or somewhere on campus because of my job. My job began to be where I was the happiest, but, of course, school had to FUCK me over one more time. My class schedule for the second semester was Hitler on paper. I had signed up for the maximum amount of classes my school allows students to take, and just looking at it was overwhelming. I wanted to graduate on time in May and this was the only way to do it. I was forced to quit my job that I loved, and I was devastated. I continued to work there all of Christmas break up until the very last weekend before school started. I hugged my friends at work goodbye and began what would be the hardest semester of my entire life.

When I say this is the hardest semester of my life, I don’t mean it’s been hard like my freshman year was hard. I mean that my entire life is consumed with CLASSES. I feel like I never get a break and I’m always dreading tomorrow. I miss my job, and I miss when my thoughts weren’t filled with overwhelming amounts of assignments and due dates. I guess I should say I MISSED these things actually considering that all of my classes have been converted to online because of the virus terrorizing our planet. As sick as this may sound, if I could choose any semester for something like this to happen, I’m glad it was this one. I hate that a virus that is affecting so many people had to be the reason though. I’m typing this THESIS the day after my school announced it was converting to online classes and it feels like a 10,000-pound weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It felt like I was two assignments away from having a legitimate breakdown. This wasn’t at all how I imagined my last day on campus would be like, but…I’m (kinda) done with college. At least in person. Wow. 

I’m not exactly sure what prompted me to write this. I think I wanted to do it for myself as a way to finally let go of the of pain and anger I’ve experienced through college. I want to move on with my life now that I’m less than two months away from graduation and stop hanging on to things from the past and regrets that I’ve had that I just can’t change. I tend to act like I have a tough exterior, but behind that, there’s been a lot of pain and insecurity. Some of which I’ve kept to myself. Sometimes, I look back at that 18 year old girl who was burdened with so much sadness and cry. However, I want to let go of all of it. I have to. I also wanted people to know that not every college experience is the same and they’re not always going to be like what people tell you they are or what you see in the movies. I wish someone would’ve told me that. The lows I’ve felt throughout my time in college are things I wouldn’t wish on anyone especially young people experiencing their freedom and independence for the first time. I hope anyone that might read this who hasn’t started college or who is already in college make the most of their time there. Don’t compare yourself to others and don’t allow yourself to wallow and fall so deep into a hole that you feel like you can’t get out. Get help if you need it, there’s never any shame in doing so. I’m proud of myself for pushing through and I’m ready to start the life I’ve always wanted for myself. Thank you for making it through a 2 and a half page paper of my woes.

Here it goes:: the topic today is PCOS.

PCOS means polycystic ovarian syndrome. There are a lot of things that you can google, but I am going to be talking about my own personal journey and what that means for me now in this moment in time. There’s TMI in here, but reading personal accounts has helped me broaden my mind and knowledge and has certainly helped me realize I’m not alone in my struggles.

First thing you should know is that while some little girls plan their weddings, I planned baby names. I used to say I wanted as many children as I could, and I have ALWAYS wanted to have a family of my own.

Body wise, I was healthy and ���normal” until I was about 8 or 9 years old. I slowly gained weight and got “husky”, but nothing to be terribly concerned about. By 12, I was obese. I didn’t get my first period until I was 16, which some say is just being a late bloomer, but in my case was probably the beginning effects of PCOS.

At 11, my parents divorced and my dad and I went off our own way. We had a huuuge learning curve, and I remember eating spaghetti with sauce (and when that ran out - butter) for weeks at a time until he got paid again because spaghetti was cheap, cheap, cheap. We moved again and again and readjusted our lifestyle over and over so we would never have to go back to those rough days, but that period of time was when I went from “husky” to obese.

I hated my body and didn’t understand why eating what was presented as “healthy” as a child wasn’t helping me. At 14, I started dance classes and later tried out and made my high school drill teams. All the dancing and cardio didn’t help my waistline. I didn’t let anyone’s mean comments or my fat body stop me from dancing, which inspired some and repulsed others. I didn’t have regular periods which I chalked up to being so active and fat at the same time. A stressed out body could possibly decide that’s not the best place for a baby to grow, right??

Enter adulthood. Here’s a few things I learned::

1.) Bread is NOT healthy. My mother drilled in my head that bread is good for you and could be a good anytime healthy snack as well as something you HAD to eat at least twice a day. Not sure where she got that information because, especially with my body type, starch and carbs are the enemy. I didn’t learn this til much later, I will alert when it is time.

2.) I have ADD. Specifically, ring of fire ADD (NOT ADHD) which helped explain why I am patient and extremely slow to anger, but once I’m angry, just back off and let me blow off my steam to cool down again. I thought it was because I’m southern. This diagnosis was at the age of 19.

3.) I have PCOS. The doctor I went to perhaps had good intentions, but conveyed very incorrect information and can give you, the reader, a glimpse at how one obese patient was given said info.

At my first OBGYN appointment, she told me that with 95% accuracy, I definitely had PCOS. She glanced over what that meant, but then came to the part she grilled me on - my weight. My weight was most likely causing the PCOS so if I could just stop eating bad and go exercise, I could probably reverse the effects and have a normal body again. I explained that I had danced for years and hadn’t eaten that terribly since I had had to at 12, and she said that I simply must not have been exercising hard enough and eating too much. Insert a HUUUGE eye roll here because as any drill team alum know, it’s plenty.

The real troubling thing came next when I talked about my want for a family in the future. She looked at me very gravely and said that my chances for conception are extremely slim, and if I ever did successfully conceive and didn’t miscarry, I would need to quit my job and stay at home and never be stressed for the whole 9 months because I would be at a very high risk of miscarriage up until the baby came out. Also, “don’t get attached to the first one” because I will likely lose it. Reminder:: A REAL DOCTOR TOLD ME THIS. AT 19. For real.

Her solution: birth control. I was very weary of all types of female birth control because there are a lot of side effects. I took them for a few months, and then stopped.

I don’t hold any ill will towards her, but I later found out that that information is VERY incorrect. My journey however has included believing that lie until 2 years ago.

Shortly after that, I found out I had ADD, so I started taking adderall. I took a high dose because my fat body would absorb it, and when friends or whoever would ask my dosage and I’d tell them, they were horrified and assured me that my heart would definitely explode and they were surprised I wasn’t already dead as a door nail. That’s the problem with opinions, it’s all very personally based. They weren’t thinking of MY fat body at all.

The adderall worked wonders. I could concentrate! I could multitask! I stopped making so many dang piles! Mostly, I stopped eating. I ate regular or smaller meals at “regular” times in the day and if I skipped something, it didn’t matter because I was definitely not hungry.

On weekends, sometimes I would want a break. So I wouldn’t take my adderall and I’d sleep and sleep and sleep and then binge eat and go right back to sleep. My roommates were worried but I felt so healed and cleansed with all that sleep, I wasn’t worried at all.

I grew skinnier and skinnier, and my PCOS symptoms had began to disappear. I was having regular periods, I wasn’t growing hair in weird places, and BY GOD, I could cross my legs like a proper southern belle. Everyone was soooo proud. I was proud, my family, my friends. Everyone from high school was wondering, “how did she do it?!?” My self confidence grew, and for the first time in my life, I started dating.

One day, I met the man who would be my husband. We both expressed our want of children which raised a big ole question:: how could I treat my ADD without adderall? I was scared because I knew what being on adderall is like and what not being on it is like, and my identity as an adult had revolved around and relied on it. If I stopped the medicine, I would get fat again! I was just about to get into single digit clothing, I was beautiful, and yet, I knew I had to stop.

I couldn’t think of any good time to stop, so I just did cold turkey. I was ridiculously tired for 2 weeks, and then I started to feel normal again. Sure enough, I started gaining weight again, eating a lot more, etc etc. I had my soulmate, so it didn’t seem like such a bad deal, but it was depressing nonetheless. The cringes on faces when they saw my weight regain was painful, talks about “what happened to you???” stung, and I felt so ashamed.

Insert that number 1 revelation, bread is BAD. Bad, bad, bad. I learned all about processed foods, and tried the keto diet. It worked and I lost a little bit of weight, but it was unrealistic for long term. Once you’re off keto, all that weight springs back on you, and so it did.

After our marriage, I was off insurance for some time and when I got back on, I was put on metformin for my A1C. My day to day numbers are fine, but my A1C number was ridiculously high. It’s under control now, and we are looking to the next step.

I have researched PCOS and here is the real kicker:: it makes it hard to lose weight but if you could just lose weight, it would get the symptoms under control. However, one of the symptoms is that it is hard to lose weight. It’s a great big freakin’ circle. I’m not talking “stop eating bread” hard. I’m talking “don’t even think about looking at carbs” hard. The only thing that helped was dropping all carbs and then I got yelled at for a non balanced diet. IT’S FRUSTRATING!

Here’s my plan:: cut out things in baby steps.

Step 1:: no more drinking my sugar intake. Proud to say, I have completed this step. This is one southern woman who drinks UNsweet iced tea and water only, please.

Step 2:: no more fast food. Still working on this one, it’s so easy and yummy but I have cut it to once a week.

Step 3:: no more junk food.

Step 4:: healthy meals only.

The scary thing is that the help for conception is all very expensive. The words of my previous OBGYN keep swimming through my head. I struggle to force myself to go to baby showers because while I am thrilled for my friend and their new little one, I am envious and that is an ugly color. Every time I see a child that’s been abused, it makes me tear up because I would love to adopt a child and love them to pieces. Adoption isn’t an option for us sadly due to things out of our hands (still looking into this, but the process of adoption of American children is hard and expensive), but the thought still hurts.

God wouldn’t put such a strong desire for having children in my heart if I wasn’t meant to have any, right?

I hope that anyone who got this far will remember this:: a lot of this struggle was silent as it was happening. I certainly know that if given the choice, I would have the correct BMI for my height. I didn’t choose this struggle, and unkind words make it harder to shoulder. As the Beatles say, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Thanks to those who have supported me and let me vent to them about these struggles, and for those who have been with me as I navigate my way into the future.

man made mania

I was prescribed the lowest dose of Adderall just before leaving for a 3-week rehab stay, so I started taking it about a week after I got back.

I'm Bipolar 1, bordering schizoaffective. I always say "mental illness isn't what they show on TV" because it's 99% true - except when it comes to my exact "version" of the mania I get.

The first time I realized I was manic, I'd been up 2 nights and made it a third when I Googled "I don't feel like I need to sleep". Checked off all the boxes. Saw a psych the very next day, who'd also seen me 4d earlier. I told him I thought, maybe, there could possibly be a small chance that I could have Bipolar 2 (slightly less intense version).

After "making my case" via bringing my laptop to the hospital to show him a bunch of highlighted webpages, color-coded, he said I definitely didn't have #2 - I was a solid 1. I asked him why. He said "You just spoke non-stop, with a lot of tangents, for 45m. I've never heard more than 10 words at a time in the last year I've known you. You aren't hypomanic. You're VERY MANIC."

It's hard to explain how this situation happened but I'll try. 1 month earlier, I started a hard-to-treat-depression treatment called rTMS. Every weekday for a month I go to the hospital, hook up to a magnet that does some brain-scrambling stuff for an hour.

I mentioned it's reserved for hard-to-treat-depression. That's cuz, the science being done to my brain, done every single day for a month, apparently adds up if you don't have the exact, clinical diagnosis of "HTT Depression". It is NEVER used on anyone who's ever been psychotic, any form of Bipolar, and a select other few like OCD, because it'll take the worst symptoms of those disorders and put them on steroids.

After the last treatment ends and you don't get it the next day, after weeks, if you're actually bipolar, it's a near-guarantee you're about to be astrally projected into the next galaxy. Your brain had been adjusting little by little and now it's on its own. And it's going to try and do its own rTMS. And, if you're Bipolar or Schizo or anything NOT just "depression", it will work its magic, and that result will be almost overnight mania. That's how the psychiatrist explained it to me.

I started on some new drugs, some helping some not. I'd never been manic before, and after 19y of depression, I never, ever wanted it to end. So I took my pills selectively, trying anything to prolong the mania. Alas, a month later, I crashed hard.

I got 2 more rounds of "naturally occuring" mania, then my entire family disowned me and I made the stupid, self-fulfilling prophecy that "Great, now I'll never be happy enough to be manic again."

And for almost 4 years, I wasn't. Never came close.

Then I started taking Adderall, to get back to actually starting the Story of The Great Manic Episode of '21-22. I don't have ADHD - I actually think I have the opposite, where I can make myself focus on ANYTHING and often get "lost in the sauce" for hours. I'm a productivity machine. I quite literally cannot think of a single time in my life where I've "procrastinated" on anything. I actually struggle to grasp the concept. I also never get writer's or artist's block. I haven't been bored since I started high school. I remember the feeling, but it's not in my repertoire anymore. If nothing seems engaging, I'm just depressed, not bored.

All that to say, what Adderall offers - focus, attention, drive - I was already supplying. But there's one thing that never, ever changes: I haven't woken up "refreshed" in 7 years. I forget what wakefulness feels like. Psychiatrist, out of ideas and knowing stimulants = awake, started me on the lowest dose.

I had a psychotic episode after taking a tiny Ritalin pill like 4 years ago. Been terrified since, but I'm getting sick of being tired so I say yeah, worth a shot.

After a month at 5mg, I got nothing. Another month of nothing at 10, and on my way to 15, I started to notice its effects.

And they're the same ones I get with mania. If you can't get manic naturally, apparently, store-bought is fine.

I was a lot more focused and productive, which was nice, but still did nothing for my fatigue. Fuck it, said my psychiatrist. Let's speedrun to 20 then 25.

So to make a lil timeline, August, September, most of October, not feelin much. November, starting to vibe. By the end of November, I was hypomanic - one level under manic.

December was mania. Up for days, obsessive focus on minutia that doesn't matter... and for me, compulsive online shopping.

January, I was out the whole month with Covid and then pneumonia back-to-back. I was so sick, I didn't want to be awake so I basically skipped most of my Adderall for a month.

Then I got better. And wanted to make up for lost time. So I took more Adderall whenever I felt it wearing off. So at one point, a week ago, I clocked exactly 72 awake straight - and couldn't fall asleep for those last 2h despite doubling my sleeping pills and having been awake for 3 days.

It wasn't my intent to do that - it never is. It just happens. Lost in the flow of something, 12 midnight can turn to 12 noon in what feels like minutes.

All this to say... I've been manic for 2 months. And I finally told my psychiatrist that, yeah, 25mg is too much, bring me back down.

Because as much as I love being manic, it's not worth the risk of being psychotic.

The first sign, for me, of psychopathy, is not falling asleep within an hour of taking my sleeping pills. No matter what, they always work for me. Unless my thoughts are racing so fast and I can't lay still and I need a light or the misting* is too much.

*Misting is what I call my 2-day hallucination: it always looks like it's snowing/lightly raining wherever I look. Ranges from unnoticeable unless I'm looking for it to "makes me unable to read".

Anyway. Mania is dying down as is my prescription. It was a decently fun-ish time, but I'm heading back down to earth, where life is awful. But at least I can sleep.

Hellooooooo!

Hi there Internet people (or most likely like, five friends, my mom, and my aunt who are reading this because I posted it on Facebook), and welcome to my blog!

If you didn't link to this directly from my Facebook, and can’t tell by my blog name (which maybe you can’t, because a fancy tea and a drug people take to pull all-nighters is a super vague name for a website), this blog is all about my life as a girl who has ADHD. I’m twenty-two years old, in my final year of my international relations degree, and will be starting law school in September. I’ve always been a top student, did competitive Irish dance from grade one to grade twelve, have worked in political activism since I was fifteen, and hope to one day work on Track II Diplomacy and truth and reconciliation initiatives in Northern Ireland. Two months ago, I was also diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Lemme tell you- that explained A LOT. Like, A WHOLE LOT. The last two months may have been the most important of my life, as I’ve finally started getting effective treatment (four years after the first time I saw a doctor for my mental wellbeing). Now I start my day with 10 mg Adderall XR, and have spent a lot of time figuring out not-medicinal ways to further improve my life and make my world work the way I need it to. I’ve been thinking about starting a YouTube channel or a blog for the last week or so, so- here I am!

What made me decide to start this blog? There are three reasons.

#1 - NEW EXCITING PROJECT! ADHD brains love new exciting projects.

...there’s nothing deeper to this. I just really wanted to make a blog.

#2 - There are so few resources out there for women and girls with ADHD, and the articles and studies you will find are super super boring and just repeat the same information over and over again. “Many girls with ADHD aren’t diagnosed until post-secondary!” “The needs of girls with ADHD get overlooked because they aren’t disruptive and often do well in school!” Yeah, tell me something I don’t know. Honestly, I learned more about my own experiences and what I’ve been struggling with my whole life from one woman’s YouTube channel (HowToADHD is absolute MUST for women and girls with this diagnosis; it changed my life) than I did from my psychiatrist, psychologist, and every article about ADHD in girls that I could find on the internet. I wanted to create content that’s fun, relatable, and actually helps other girls like me understand what’s going on inside their heads and how to deal with it.

#3 - Honestly, I wanted to create a more positive representation of ADHD in girls than what I’ve been seeing on social media lately. What I’m about to say might not go down well with everyone in the mental health/disability community, but frankly, I don’t care. The general mental illness community on social media is toxic as hell. I first encountered this in high school, when I briefly had a recovery Instagram while I was struggling with anorexia. (By the way, did you know that girls with ADHD are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder than other girls?) For every account that genuinely encouraged recovery and celebrated their victories while being transparent about their struggles, there were four accounts asking for tips on how not to gain weight when you’re hooked up to a feeding tube. I’ve heard from other people that there is a similar toxicity in the community around chronic illness and chronic pain. I follow this super brave and strong girl named Daisy on instagram, who has Ehlers-Danlos and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (which apparently is literally the worst pain the world). She recently shared that she had to leave all of the “support” groups for chronic pain that she was in on Facebook because they were breeding a culture that encouraged people to stay at home in bed and mope rather than to continue seeking out the best possible treatments and live the fullest live that they possibly can. I hate to say it, but lately I’ve noticed the same sort of trend among people who have ADHD. It’s almost hard to believe that me and some of the people I’ve observed on Facebook and Tumblr have the same diagnosis. This is harsh but I’m just gonna say it- there is an awful trend of people with ADHD refusing to take accountability for their behaviour or to realize that just because you have a neurodevelopmental disorder does not mean that you can never ever be the person in the wrong. ADHD is an explanation for certain behaviours, not an excuse. Because of my ADHD, I have done things and treated people in ways that I am not proud of, but having ADHD does not excuse this behaviour. I was overjoyed to finally get an explanation for why I act the way I do sometimes- especially one that is as highly treatable as ADHD is. I wasted no time looking into strategies for coping with the unique struggles that I have and working on the resultant bad behaviours. There was not one moment of sadness over this diagnosis- just a relief that I finally had somewhere to start my journey towards being better. Beyond just using it as an excuse for everything, I’ve also seen a huge trend of people being more focused on self-pity than on self-care and self-improvement. These are the moments that I am really, really glad that I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 22. Do I wish I knew about Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria before I let my experience with it push away my best friend to the point that he blocked my number for six months? Of course I do. Do I regret losing an entire academic year because I couldn’t motivate myself? Do I wish I knew I wasn’t just being lazy, because maybe then I wouldn’t have been ashamed to ask for help? Obviously. But despite that, I’m glad I wasn’t diagnosed as a child or a teenager. Why? Because I grew up believing I was just like everyone else else. I grew up without a reason to think that I couldn’t do anything anyone else could do. I’m glad I didn’t grow up with an easy excuse for every mistake I made. I’m glad my parents never felt the need to go easy on me and I’m glad I wasn’t weighed down by this idea that I was inherently incapable of achieving my lofty goals. Was it really, really, REALLY hard sometimes? You bet. Did I often wonder why I couldn’t focus like everyone else could, or why relationships were so hard for me? Of course I did. But I’m glad I never had the opportunity to sit back and say “well I just can’t do it because I have ADHD and that’s that.” Would I have graduated high school with a 95% GPA if I had been diagnosed as a child? Would I have pushed myself to take a full French program in university when I only had grade 12 core French? Would I have written the LSAT, and scored a 162 even though I barely studied for it? Probably not, because looking at the ADHD community that I’m a newcomer to, I have a sinking feeling that I wouldn’t have pushed myself half as hard as I did. Being forced to muddle through and try to keep up with no help for as long as I did instilled in me the best gift possible: a positive attitude, and a firm belief that I can do anything I set my mind to.

So what does that have to do with this blog? Well, I wanted to create a space where ADHD is not seen as something that necessarily holds us back. I want to encourage approaching life with ADHD with a positive attitude. I want this to be a space where fellow ADHD brains can come for tips on studying for the LSAT and MCAT, share the workouts and sleep hygiene that help them focus, and talk about how they prepare things the night before so they don’t forget anything in the morning- not a space where people come to complain about how unfair it is that your boss wasn’t understanding of the fact that you were 25 minutes late for work. I’m not saying having ADHD isn’t a huge challenge, or that sometimes, despite our best efforts, we aren’t going to mess up. Because we are. A lot. And I’m not saying it’s not okay to be bummed out about those mess ups, or to sometimes feel like life isn’t fair. I’m going to try to post once a week, but with exam season upon us, I can’t guarantee that that will happen- at least not right away. ok, so listen to the shit my psychiatrist told me yesterday because IT. IS. JUICY. (TW: eating disorders)

i need to vent but here’s a read more in case you wanna skip this because this is LOOOOOONG

i was describing to her how i’m currently pricing out personal trainers to help me start exercising again in a healthy, non-disordered way because the last three times (in the past 18-24 months or so) that I tried to start working out again, I found myself spiraling and getting overly anxious or unrealistic about my goals, so i’d either overexercise, restrict, and/or purge.

as i described the height of my exercise compulsion-- highest intensity elliptical for 60 minutes or 2000 calories burned (whichever came second) every single day, no exception (Sundays were my off day and I relished them)-- from seven years ago, which was worse than the actual bulimia at times, she just cut me off and said an hour a day wasn’t too bad, ignoring 1. the 2000 calories thing, 2. that i weighed about 130lbs less I do now, and 3. i was either severely restricting or compensating for binge behaviors from voracious appetite swings 4. caused by hormonal fluctuations 5. due to then-undiagnosed thyroid cancer.

BUT WAIT. THERE’S MORE. then she laid into my dietitian and said eating disorder dietitians in general are overly focused on “making sure their patients are comfortable eating” instead of losing weight (if they're ones who need to, of course). ummm...getting me less regimented in my eating is the fucking point. i’d eat something i wasn’t “supposed” to and then purge it somehow (exercise, vomit, restriction, etc.). <-- that’s the fucking basics of the fucking disorder, and that’s not even explicitly mentioning the mental illness aspect.

again, she told ME, A LONG-DIAGNOSED, DEPRESSED GRADUATE STUDENT WITH A HISTORY OF TREATMENT FOR BULIMIA AND OTHER EATING DISORDERS that i need to lose weight. Yes, i know that. does she really think i don’t know that? i wear my clothes and look in the mirror and have been in eating disorder treatment for the past five fucking years. what makes her think this is news to me? does she not think i don’t remember how I bust my ass off to healthily lose 100 pounds in college, and then gained it all back (and then some) in FOUR FUCKING MONTHS when my bulimia turned into binge eating disorder and my EATING-DISORDER AND QUASI-SUICIDAL MIND tricked myself into thinking this was the healthier option?! BECAUSE I SURE AS HELL REMEMBER. she does have the point that my weight is not healthy in the long-term (of course i know that), but neither is a fucking depression and any kind of eating disorder.

i WANT to lose weight but my dietitian agreed to work with me on the condition that my focus COULD NOT be on losing weight (she was gonna work with me no matter what, but she’s a genius with how she approaches her clients) until my eating patterns were stable and the frequency of my disordered behaviors dropped dramatically (which they have- i’ve only purged ONCE in the past year. My binges are not just far and in between but also much smaller and cheaper than they used to be). so if she’s gonna come after my dietitian, this psychiatrist is also coming after me because i would not be where i am without her (+ my therapist).

okay, i did expect some of this coming into the appointment though, so i did subject myself to this a little. she said some of this stuff in october at the first appointment i had with her but i was able to talk back against it in my head and discuss it with my therapist and i didn’t think about it again for a couple weeks. but the shit she was saying yesterday was just so much more inappropriate and insensitive that I only tolerate it for the refills on my meds.

i’m not saying she’s an awful psychiatrist. i just feel she needs to work on her bedside manner, or at least with her overweight eating disordered patients (because we already feel pretty shitty about that, and you don’t even need to have an eating disorder to feel that) or she needs more training in eating disorder treatment protocol. at one point in both appointments, she implied with the subtlety of a sledgehammer that it won’t be possible for me to have good self-esteem at my current size and weight, which completely defeats the point of body positivity and loving yourself at any size (FYI: Loving yourself at any size ≠ pro-obesity. Anyone who says otherwise is looking for a socially acceptable way to hate on fat people. The key word is “any.”).

All this said, she is a capable clinician. the medication regimen she has me on is working beautifully. my depression is so much more stable and the highs and lows of my mood are more like speed bumps and potholes than the mountains and ocean trenches of before. my anxiety is under much better control too (though a lot of that is because of the strategies I’ve been working on with my wonderful therapist) and the anxiety is also more situational. after all, i did go a gay bar by myself last weekend for the first time ever (it was at 2:00 on a Sunday afternoon, but i still did it despite the anxiety!). 

I am also so appreciative of her ADHD diagnosis. I was apprehensive at first because the diagnosis was so quick and not even the focus of the appointment, but the medication she put me on is working. i thought that high school killed any enjoyment i once had for serious, intellectual reading, but since the medication i’ve started paging through the plethora of books i’ve bought over the years but never read and gotten absorbed by random pages even though i don’t know what’s going on. I don’t remember the last time was able to concentrate for extended periods of times without a deadline or outside pressure. i can read lengthy journal articles in record time and still absorb the information. the only downside is they kill my appetite, which she admitted she is part of the reason why prescribed them for me. (this part i’m not that upset about since i have been on binge suppressants for years and I see this as an additional tool- I’ve had no urge to abuse them other than the ED voice that instinctually tells me to, but I’ve just ignored it from the beginning).

so even though she is highly insensitive to my needs, she is also a highly capable and otherwise qualified psychiatrist. however, during therapy today, i discussed her comments with my therapist and that I would continue to see her while i searched/waited for an appointment with a different psychiatrist, since I had to wait 7 months to see this current doctor. instead, my therapist jumped on the phone, called a couple numbers and was able to get me an appointment with a psychiatrist she trusted for right after the new year. so i only have to see this current one once more and that’s only so I can get refills and continue my current medication regiment, which been working wonderfully for me.

i didn’t mean to make this so long but it feels good to get this out. my clinician is gonna inform my dietitian (which is making me impatient for my next appointment because she was ready beat a bitch last time because of this doctor and i want to see what she has to say this time) and then, if i didn’t mind, she wanted to bring this up with some managers at her location. i don’t care if she informs some higher ups, i just don’t want my name to get back to the psychiatrist until after the next/last appointment. i’m also going to file a complaint, not for vengeance or anything, just so her superiors can hopefully let her know how other patients might interpret her comments.  

at least for me, this psychiatrist’s comments aren’t about me not being able to handle what i don’t want to hear. they were unprofessional, inappropriate, and frankly, uninformed and dangerous. if i hadn’t been further along in my recovery, i might have been liable to abuse my adderall as an appetite suppressant for weight loss purposes, start exercising and dieting again when i’m not mentally ready, or just accept her fat-shaming for what it wasn’t since since it was coming out of the mouth of an MD.

But I’m lucky to be in a place where I can recognize those comments for what they are. And I give credit to my therapist and dietitian, who’ve gotten me that place in the past year and a half (and I guess the current psychiatrist deserves some credit too for her medication regimen that was effective right off the bat, but that’s where I’ll leave it). And to the therapists, dietitians, and doctors I’ve have in the past five years, but mostly to my current ones, because they got me back on track when I moved back to WI and then further along than I have ever gotten before. Their voices are nagging in my ear to myself credit to, so I guess I played my part too.

 Sometimes I feel I have incredibly bad luck with my romantic pursuits. I’m not particularly handsome, but I feel by no means ugly. I’m pretty much average weight and average height. One day, however, I felt that perhaps fortune was smiling upon me, as I had a date at a coffee shop. I had met this girl named Sam on Tinder about a week ago and just recently worked up the courage to ask her if she wanted to go get coffee. It had been nearly a year since I had any romantic experiences, so I was feeling pretty darn nervous. Anxiety is something I rarely feel, so this anxiety was all that much more crushing.        

 I had to drive to go pick her up because she didn’t have a car. She gave me the address to a driving school, so I assumed that she was taking lessons which explained the transportation issue. I had to GPS it since I was still new to Knoxville at the time. I parked in the parking lot and went ahead and texted her that I was there. I waited for about 5 minutes in the parking lot collecting myself before I saw her exit out of the building simply named “Medical Tests Now!” that neighbored the driving school. She wore a yellow flower dress that seemed to conflict with her green dyed hair that was half shaved and half a bob-cut. She had various piercings scattered among her lips, ears, and nose. I was surprised that she looked even better than the pictures she had on her account.        

She got into the car and we greeted each other. I started the conversation by asking why she was at a medical testing center. I was very much hoping that she wouldn’t say she was getting tested for sexual diseases. Instead she replied she was there for a drug test as she was on parole. This answer was not much better. I hesitantly asked what she was on parole for, hoping she wouldn’t be offended. Sam replied that she was pulled over by a cop for speeding and they found her with a bag of Adderall. They pressed charges for intention to deal, but she said that was not the case. She simply put some in a bag to store in her car when she forgot to take it at home. This was also the reason why she was not driving as she got her license suspended. At this moment I could not decide whether this girl had a stream of bad luck or she was actually problematic. Regardless, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt because I did not want to ruin this first date after such a long hiatus.        

 She and I had casual conversation about our shared interests as we drove to the coffee shop until she asked me how often I smoked weed. I promptly said I didn’t. She seemed surprised and apologized. She said she thought I said so in a prior conversation. This kind of worried me as I hoped something like not doing drugs was not an immediate turn-off. We continued the small talk until they reached the coffee shop. It was a small store with a generic green and white look at the end of a row of other shops and restaurants. We went into the dimly lit coffee shop and up to the counter. I ordered a mocha and then turned to Sam to ask what she wanted. She said almost surprisingly, “Oh, you’re paying?”        

 “Yes?” I said questioningly        

 This worried me as I thought it was already unfortunately established that the man pays for stuff on dates. I started to worry that perhaps she didn’t think of this as a date. “Nonsense!” I thought, “Why wouldn’t she think it’s a date? We discussed this meeting on a dating app!” Even though this was logically sound to me, I still irrationally had fear in my stomach. Perhaps not smoking weed was actually a deal breaker and she had changed her mind about everything? She asked for an Americano and I paid for the drinks and made sure to tip, having a fear of what she would think about me if he didn’t. I always make sure to tip as I once had a similar job, so it was odd for me to think this way.        

 I found a pair of black wooden chairs and sat down as Sam went to this restroom. I began to slightly panic as I had started to remember the many stories I’ve read where the girl would sneak out of a date by asking to go to the restroom and then proceed to escape. This fear stayed with me as my eyes bounced around the room glancing at oddly placed plants and paintings that looked like they came out of a shutdown hotel. She eventually returned and I restarted the conversation by asking her what kind of job she had. She said she was in-between jobs right now and was living with a friend. She apparently also dropped out of college. Her intended major was psychology and she wanted to be a therapist, which coincidentally was similar to what I wanted to be. I was ecstatic to have made such a connection! I told her so and she brushed it off with an “Oh, that’s cool.” I was hit with the realization that perhaps she may now resent me for being on the path what she dropped off of. I quickly tried to recover by asking what she does for fun. Sam said she usually bar hopped with friends and started telling stories about all her wild adventures doing acid and drinking. She reciprocated the question and I talked about how I played card games, cooked with friends, and studied Japanese. She said she also played card games but her reaction to everything else was about subpar.        

 Our order got called and I went and brought the coffees over to the table. I asked her if Americano was what she normally got and she said it was either that or plain dark coffee. She said she didn’t like any of that “frilly shit.” I responded with “Ah, I see” as I sipped on my mocha wondering if she considered it “frilly shit.” I didn’t bother asking.        

 We then talked about current events until the coffee was all gone and we proceeded to get up and leave. We went to my car and she gave me the address of her place so I could drop her off. During the drive back, I found out we had a similar love for cats and we talked about cats for the entirety of the drive back to her place. We pulled up to what turned out to be an average looking apartment. I was expecting something cheaper, but this was a pleasant surprise. She gave a cheerful sounding “Let’s hang again sometime!” as she stepped out and I replied with an equally ecstatic, “sure!”        

 I was kind of surprised by what she said. I had my doubts during the entire date that anything else would come out of it. I felt like they had a lot of shared interests in movies, music, and food. But maybe our two lifestyles were too drastically different? Perhaps she was looking to change her life from a wild one to something calmer? Regardless, I thought she was quite cute and was fine with seeing how things would turn out after future dates. Once I got home, I messaged her asking if she wanted to grab dinner sometime. She never responded.        

 I hoped that she was just too busy to respond after the date. This was clearly not the case after a week. I even hesitantly did a follow up text in case she forgot to respond. I never received an answer. I wondered what I did wrong as I felt lonelier inside. After a while I came to terms that perhaps it was just not a good match. Despite this, the entire event still had a lasting impact on me. Failure was not something foreign to me, but it still hit my self-esteem pretty hard this time around. I quit Tinder as I had been using it for around 2 months without any success besides that one date. I decided that perhaps it would be best to just wait from this point on and just hope I meet someone from a real life interaction.        

 I did end up downloading Tinder again about 6ish months later and lo’ and behold, I see Sam again. This time her profile had a new sentence in it. It read “Must be 420 friendly!” I went “huh” in a moment of realization. Who knew that the true deal breaker was indeed the fact I didn’t smoke weed. That made me feel a bit better that day.

Cannabis and Bipolar Disorder

So...I'm not sure if this will work for anyone else but if there's even the slightest chance this could help anyone I need to put it out there. I have severe Bipolar Disorder, I'll have days or weeks of manic of depressive episodes. Anyone with Bipolar knows the depressive episodes are the worst, they can last for weeks or months and it mimics depression, you want to do nothing but sleep, cry, harm yourself, the list goes on and you don't know why. But first, some context: Before I started smoking marijuana my depressive episodes would last as long as 1-2 months. It was horrible and I couldn't talk to anyone about it. I never talk about my feelings, I take after my dad, we kinda suck at showing our emotions to other people so we bottle it up until we explode. So I've never been properly medicated for it, the doctor who prescribes my psychiatric medication knows about my mood fluctuations and prescribes me Lamotrigine...which is an anti seizure medication/mood stabilizer that helps me control my fits of anger and anxiety but beyond that does nothing. Not to mention my prescribed birth control that I take so I don't die of anemia puts a whole new emotional side effect on my body. You know that rumor that birth control can make women depressed and moody, well it's true, but it only ties in with my bipolar disorder. See I have to skip the placebos and avoid getting my period because once it starts it doesn't stop and I end up getting blood transfusions in the hospital. But in the beginning, years ago when I first started taking the pill I noticed something. My depressive episodes started the day I was supposed to get my period and they would last for however long that particular episode would last, it's different every time, but the start date is always when I should get my period. So there's that, my adderall could also contribute to this but I've had these episodes since before I was prescribed all these medications, they just seem to escalate it for some reason. So back on track to cannabis, no full disclosure, I'm NOT a medicinal marijuana patient, I'm trying to get a card but the marijuana I get is not from a dispensary I get my weed from some guy named Jesus. Now I don't want to suggest going through sketchy drug dealers because SOMETIMES, and this is rare it can be laced but Jesus is actually a friend of mine and he grows his own stuff legally so I trust him. But you know like most people you can't just have one plug. I started off smoking recreationally, I get bud from whoever sells, so I never know what strain I'm getting, but I realized something, no matter what kind of weed I got, it lessened the effects and length of my depressive episodes. The THC elevated my mood and ya know put out the euphoric feeling. I no longer wanted to kill myself, I didn't see the world turning against me. I don't know the exact science behind it, I'm not going to say shit I don't know, and I'm not suggesting this will work with everyone but if there's the slightest chance that this could work for other people then I want them to know. Because I know what it feels like to be surrounded by demons and I hate to think that other people have to go through that same bullshit.

Hi there. I have a question. I want to SUE my Car insurance company because they refuse to pay for my stolen car which is been more then 6 months and still hasn't been recovered. The reason why was because i misrepresented myself. and what they meant by that was that when i signed the contract i selected NO in a question ( Has your license ever been suspended or revoked) Now let me explain how this happened. I got the insurance thru my broker. Everything was done by phone. My broker happened to be family of dear friend of mine. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. This afternoon, I was at a gas station and I backed my 2003 Pontiac mini van into a concrete barrier very hard.
