a headcanon from each of the levels you just reblogged for gaalee
oh my GOD this is a top quality anonymous question op ur da BEST. yammertime. ofc since these are all for a non-canonical ship they're all deranged sparkle emoji but i digress.
for anyone who is like wtf here's the post i reblogged.
text under the cut!
level one:
one that purveyors of gaalee are very familiar with in fanon lore but i believe this to fit in nicely with canon while filling gaps: gaalee friendship developed predominantly via letter writing. reasons why i think this fits with canon 1) gaara manages to develop solid friendships with a lot of people in konoha with what is visually very little actual in-person interaction time. it stands to reason that there's behind the scenes friendship development. 2) he's the president at fourteen like he does not have time to spend on wandering the local mall like a lot of us oldmanyaois did to build our social circles, plus, he's got access to allllll the military communications options. and hawks are fast 3) we know there are multiple canonical messenger hawks! and their whole purpose is cross village communiques. of course they're all sending notes lets b so fr rn
level two:
height difference: lee is, in my head, taller than the canon suggests, and gaara is shorter. reasoning: ok look you've all seen this panel and you're telling me gaara ends up only like 4cm shorter than lee? Go To Jail
yes yes we can all discuss how they're all mid teens and have growing time but listen. gaara spent his entire childhood being effectively mentally tortured by shukaku and also his village's effective abandonment. do you think he had a well balanced diet? if we want to get scientific there's several studies that discuss how poor nutrition in childhood leads to lifelong consequences, and just because kishimoto didn't address this doesn't mean I Won't thank u. and i haven't even gotten started on the not-sleeping-thing. conversely, lee's probably been on Max Gains Training Diet since he was like. what, 10? tldr, i'm simply massaging their canonical heights in favour of what Actually Makes Sense Fucka You
i have another one for lee i think fits in this level that many of you may know from my magnus opus fight club: lee is--whether certified or not--definitely qualified to be a physiotherapist, and i think he'd volunteer at the hospital helping patients with mobility related injuries. reasoning: PLEASE in order to be a brilliant taijutsu specialist he has to have like the most intimate understanding of how the body works. that's his whole area of expertise. and i think that even post-op as a sand-squished teen he would have needed tons of therapy, and rock "paragon of virtue and chivalry and whatever" lee would absolutely feel like he needed to provide some sort of assistance to the hospo staff and help the other patients. because that's what a good shinobi would do. dattebayo
level 3:
yall know what time it is its LANGUAGE HEADCANON TIME based on, once again, all of @sagemoderocklee's fantastic lore. i think lee speaks 3, which for me are a) some form of shinobi common b) whatever the land of fire's local is, and c) something unique to team gai that's heritage based. in tgod i call it nishitsuchigo. i think gaara speaks [large number] on account of being mr sand president sir and thus becoming to some extent a diplomat, plus all those night awake? polyglot challenge speedrun. and the gaalee aspect of this is that gaara can speak all three that lee knows, so they can use that heritage based one to talk shit about their coworkers what who said that.
gaara's hugely into gardening. i think this is a fact in the databooks and we all know the screencap where he's holding the flowerpot but extending on this into truly fan-created lore i think he's definitely overhauling all of suna's food supply chains by going ham on greenhouses and very precise water allocations etc etc
lee grows his hair out after neji's death. this one is, again, well distributed across fandom because everyone, of course, is right relieved emoji. but ignoring bort entirely, lee would definitely do something to honour his friend/teammate, and i think that would be something like growing his hair out, since i don't think he'd change his style of dress and he can't learn neji's jutsu. and he's had long hair before. bring it back kishi u bastard
level 4 delusions:
theyre married. what do you mean im delulu
metal, if i am acknowledging bort which most of the time i am not, is their biological child. no i am not explaining how. my metal origin theory changes based on the fic i'm writing. currently its rock lee's tboy swag porn extension fic. hooHA. but this one only applies to when there's kids present--most of the time there aren't kids in my head
lee and temari swap diplomat roles to be emissaries for each other's villages as part of a Siq Deal to be with their respective husbandos
lee would 100% teach taijutsu to suna's academy students. why? because i said so
basically all my other headcanons tbh
omg i had so much fun with this thank you anon! <3
#fictalk#anonymous#everyone reblog the original post so u can get me asking u for ur headcanons thaNKS#this was so much fun thank you for making my whole night anon. my last two weeks have been HELL this made everything better#gaalee#gaara#rock lee#nart#writing gronp hours#text

Continuing the Public Library of Ruina rambles:
Malkuth gets to be Circulation. This would be the affairs to do with the basic business of running a library-- checking books out, checking books in, getting them back on the shelves. This is the fundamental mechanism of the library, so of course it is one of the most entry-level and looked-down-on. Shelving is manual labor, after all. And fairly serious manual labor-- there's a lot of shelves that were made before accessibility standards suggested maybe keeping stuff an inch off the floor was a pain in the back, and books are actually pretty heavy. I like to refer to the particularly chonky hardcovers as murder weapons, but even flimsy kids' paperbacks pile up fast. Those carts are serious, yo.
This also covers "shelfreading" (making sure things are actually in order and someone didn't screw up or even deliberately shove a book they hate in the wrong place as an act of protest) and condition-checking. There's a natural wear and tear on books, of course, particularly paperbacks-- they accumulate spine cracks and dog-ears and discoloration even with proper use. However, in a public library, you're also gonna have to deal with a lot of improper use. In the less-dystopian world, you have to deal with books eaten or peed on (hopefully by pets), food stains (or bookmarks), books that got wet (there's damn near no salvaging that), etc (I still don't want to know how so many cigarette butts got in that encyclopedia set. It wasn't allowed to leave the library.). In the more-dystopian world, well, mostly that except more blood.
There's quite a bell curve between people who do not care about returning books (or "can you extend that hold 3 months while I'm out of the country") and people who are terrified when they accidentally return something a day late. The public library of Ruina could have draconian return policies, it's true to the flavor and might help in the light-gathering, but it's not really true to my experience. There's a strong trend in public libraries of eliminating late fines altogether-- they scare people out of coming to the library, punish poor people who need it most, and cost as much to try and collect as they take in anyway. At my library, we'll charge a replacement fine after a few weeks, but as long as you eventually return it in decent condition, you're good. With her extensive practice (and inability to leave the library to collect fines), Angela would probably speedrun this transition from "we must protect the books!!" to "eh who gives a fuck". Malkuth would not. She would feel increasingly devalued and undercut, not allowed to enforce the rules she believes should be in place, overworked with supervision and scheduling and logistics and basically running the damn place. In short, the same situation she was in at LobCorp, plus customer service.
So, yup, this is one of many reasons why this is a librarian-meltdowns LOR AU.

If ur still doing the 5+ au thing. You've heard of valenstrifesodos "wuh oh cloud has to deal with being realizing he's immortal with his loves sorry but steadfast in helping him through it", now prepare for valenstrifesodos "wuh oh cloud is actually deteriorating extremely fast for x or y reason (mako overloading him??? Gaia wants him back??? He and Sephiroth mutually eating at each other’s souls and finally ridding the world of J-Cells through it, even if Cloud can't survive without them anymore???) And everyone's going through the 5 stages of grief speedrun about it" F in the chat
yes yes yes yes yes [slams the angst button]
admittedly vss is my comfort ship so i tend to stay away from huge angst scenarios but i would be lying if i said didn't have brain worms for this too. i just. need all the vss content. hhhhh
1. at first it just manifests as brain fog. lack of concentration, slowed reactions, listlessness etc. cloud brushes it off as his usual overwork fatigue. even if he's much better about it these days there are still stretches of time where a lot of people are sending mail and he has to be away from home for a few days in a row, although never more than a week. when the other two notice him flagging and gently get him to take a break, though, he realizes afterwards that things are Not getting better.
2. true to cloud strife form he doesn't really mention it. or think about it. or want to acknowledge it at all. even when the bruises start showing up. some are random, some are where cloud gets hit by something but either way they don't go away. at first he just blames his carelessness and brushes them off when genesis and vincent see them, but eventually he starts getting cagey about undressing because he knows they look too suspicious. the others notice his avoidance but things only come to a head when genesis tugs cloud by the arm for something and cloud winces and grabs it. the motion is so reminiscent of when he'd had geostigma that vincent's instincts go haywire and he puts together the pieces.
3. genesis is devastated and demands they go see the goddess statue because it cured his degradation, at least, so surely it must also cure cloud's. but instead they find out that cloud isn't so much degrading as having his soul forcefully dragged out of his body via his connection to sephiroth, who definitely doesn't have the strength to come back to life at the moment but is still marinating in lifestream soup. if sephiroth can't get out so he can bother cloud then he will make cloud come to him. the planet sort of just shrugs and says she can’t do anything about it because she’s been trying to get rid of sephiroth for years to no avail, and cloud is already much closer to the lifestream than your average person after being dipped so many times, so his soul... drifts easily
4. genesis is furious with his own helplessness and yells at cloud for not saying anything sooner so they could have tried to find a solution in time. cloud feels awful because he knows what being left behind by someone you love feels like and he’d never wanted to hurt genesis or vincent this way, and begins to suggest separating so things won’t hurt as much when they inevitably come to a head. thankfully vincent interjects before things go too far and says that their time together is a gift regardless of how long it lasts, but he also has his own turmoil he hides for the sake of calming cloud and genesis down.
5. idk how this ends really. this makes me sad. they are all sad. although there are probably occasional tensions that arise when cloud feels like they’re treating him as if he’ll break any moment, they all agree they should make the most of the time they have left rather than fighting with each other. maybe after he passes cloud ends up visiting them both as a lifestream ghost and in their dreams. they can see each other but they can never really touch, and genesis and vincent are just left with this giant hole in their lives. ultimate star-crossed lovers speedrun any%
#skadren rambles#valenstrifesodos#alternatively maybe after fistfighting sephiroth in the lifestream for a few decades cloud comes back#idk how this would work w/o j-cell fuckery tho. also the intent of this is to be different from the one where they are all immortal so#✨ angst ✨

(re)Watching Magia Record S1 - part 1
Hello and welcome everyone to the first post on this watch-along commentary of the first season of Magia Record! Whether you are just now watching it for the first time, or are re-watching in preparation for the second season, or have only played the game and are curious about the anime (in which case I'd be surprised you even exist) I hope you can have some fun reading these ramblings as I try to put my thoughts into words (actually turned more into narrating the show) throughout all 12 13 episodes.
Before we can get to it, though, I have a few warnings to give:
1 - As much as I'd love to be able to memory swipe so I can watch this fresh all over again, such an ability is sadly still beyond my grasp. In other words, this isn't my first time watching (or second, for that matter; more like the sixth… or seventh…). That being the case I can't claim that these are my first impressions and it's very likely this commentary will be somewhat biased by my previous knowledge. However, I can guarantee one thing: I will do my best to keep this spoiler-free, so you don't have to worry if this is your first time watching.
(I will, however, be assuming that you have watched the OG series and Rebellion, so beware of that).
2 - Please don't come into this expecting it to be Madoka 2
Also no, this is not a continuation of the OG, it’s an alternate universe spin-off.
This one's for first-time viewers.
Well, ok, this sounds like vague tweeting and I'm kind of whining here, but I have seen a number of peeps on the internet saying that Magia Record is bad only for their argument to boil down to "because it isn't OG Madoka!"
Yeah it isn't. I'm pretty sure there's "Side Story" written somewhere in the title too.
Leaving aside the matter of nostalgia glasses and whether the original series was that much of a masterpiece or not (it's been over five years since I last watched it, so I can't say anything either way.) it seems kind of weird to me that someone would bash a spinoff on the grounds of how close it is to the original. Because here's the thing: to me, the whole point of spinoffs is taking an already existing scenario and putting a spin on it to make something new. That's exactly what makes them fun!
MagiReco didn't need to be a Madoka clone or to try hard and beat the original. That would probably have made it bad, actually. What it did need to do was to create an interesting story using the world set up by the OG Madoka and the other spinoffs, and that, in my opinion, it did, so I hope people can give it a chance and judge it on its own merits rather than only compared to the original. I'm not saying you can't hate it, either, I myself have my own problems with it, it's just that I want to see more reasonable reasons than "it's not the OG so it's bad".
3 - As you can probably already tell from these warnings, these posts are bound to get looong, so I'd recommend setting aside a fair amount of time and getting real comfy if you're gonna read it all. I also don't mind if you just skip ahead and only read the interesting parts, I'm not the internet police.
3.5 - I don't want to use it as an excuse, but I think I should make it clear that English is not my native language, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes and awkward/stilted text. It's hard to tell by myself, so feel free to correct me if you find something.
SO, with that out of the way let’s get down to what’s really important:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record Episode 1
Whew, now that’s a mouthful.
You know, in my mind I always thought a “side story” was something that happened alongside a “main story”, like another POV, so I’m not sure that’s the most appropriate title, but who am I to judge?
So here we go, we’re off with some beautiful futuristic scenery already, that’s the Madoka series I know.
As the classic Sis Puella Magi plays in the background, two unseen narrators tell us the tale of the so called “magical girls” as we are shown the reality of being one, meeting our first witch for this series.
Risking your life to save a cat doesn’t seem like the smartest of things. Rather, witches eat cats? That’s mean.
No, you really, really don’t. This narration definitely seems made to make everyone who saw the original say this, particularly with how silly are the wishes these girls suggest.
And hey, look, even this girl who supposedly had her wish granted doesn’t seem very happy.
Hang in there, this is only the first episode.
Man, this scenery really is pretty though.
After an exciting fight with a witch in the train, our girl here silently goes home to find
Whatever the heck this is.
So, our girl here seems to be having strange visions whenever she enters her room, that is very very suspiciously cut exactly in half. Protagonist, you sure have an unique sense of interior decoration.
She goes on with her day, makes two lunchboxes and… oh, it seems she’s all alone.
Is this something you should be telling your own daughter?
Long story short, Iroha’s parents are abroad right now (as is suspiciously the case with many a anime protagonist parents). I actually love the parallel this scene draws with OG Madoka: whereas Madoka’s parents seem responsible and Madoka even looks up to her mom and they’re a happy united family, Iroha comes off as being the responsible one in her family and her parents are gone from the get-go. This way, the lonely atmosphere of the previous scene also starts making sense.
So, it seems like there’s something Iroha wants to do here, and that’s why she decided to stay behind.
Perhaps. Did you wish to save a black cat?
Wow, this teacher is speaking fast. Calm down lady, we’re not here to speedrun the content, geez. Though I guess we should be happy she’s at least giving a proper class, unlike a certain other teacher…
Oh great, it's this guy.
Ok, Iroha doesn’t remember what she wished for and Kyuubei doesn’t know either, although he knows she used her wish for the sake of someone. Kyuubei theorizes that the reason she doesn’t remember might be that not remembering was part of her wish, but Iroha doesn’t think she’d wish for that. I don’t think you’d ever think to wish for something like that until you had to wish for something like that though.
She’s got a fair point. After all, wishing in this universe is basica— the heck is going on in the background there?! O-kaaay…
Iroha was having a weird think-spot mental conversation with Kyuubei there, and missed speedrun teacher’s lecture entirely. Being meguca is suffering.
We get some school motto propaganda, and now we’re on the roof. Oh? Where did all the friendship stuff from the propaganda go? Seems like Iroha’s not following the school spirit. Unless she considers the white weasel a friend, so that’s why she gave him her extra… wait, Kyuubei can EAT? I thought he was some alien machine-like being. H-Huh...
Classmate A: Tamaki-san, maji tenshi!
She’s probably just shy. According to her classmates, Iroha used to be busy doing something or the other, but no one can remember what that is.
Cute.
But maybe don’t do that somewhere someone could easily walk in on you, Iroha.
Iroha gets a call by the girl from the combat scene from before, whose name is Kuroe. I couldn’t tell from their conversation if they’ve known each other for a while or if they just met each other for the first time in the fight before.
On the train, although she’s the one who called her over, Kuroe remains silent. Iroha, clearly uncomfortable, tries her best to make conversation. Poor Iroha, I know the feeling.
We learn from her that the number of witches around has been decreasing. She comments that being unable to get Grief Seeds is troubling, but it’s better than having witches causing trouble. Poor girl has no way to know just how much of a bad news it is running out of Grief Seeds.
What’s with pink-haired girls and lacking self-esteem? Iroha, are you sure you didn’t wish to save a black and forget that you did? You did save a white one just before.
Kuroe finally decides to talk, and she tells us this:
If you go to Kamihama, you’ll be saved. To anyone that saw the OG, the first thought that comes to mind is that they’ll be saved from their destiny of turning into witches, but it seems Kuroe doesn’t know the truth yet. She just doesn’t want to fight witches anymore. I think.
The train lights up, and…
...this is extremely unsettling considering the truth about witches and the conversation they’re having right now. There’s a lot of this, but this just hits different having watched the original.
Iroha’s not inclined to believe what Kuroe’s saying. Of course, despite not remembering her wish, she’s the type that’s happy with fighting witches if she can save someone, and Kuroe’s not being very convincing either. The whole thing is apparently a rumor spread by some girls who saw a dream that told them that.
Except that Kuroe actually had the dream too.
Like most magical girls, Kuroe made a short-sighted wish, and regrets it. She now wants to be saved, so she’s going to Kamihama.
...or she was, but before that, they’ll have to defeat the witch they let escape the other day, ‘cos she’s back for more.
I actually have so many questions about this scene. Weren’t Labyrinths pocket dimensions? How come this one’s moving in physical space? We know witches themselves move and their Labyrinth goes with that, but I thought it was more, like, the entrance to the Labyrinth moves. Then how come witches can escape if magical girls get carried with their Labyrinth when they move…? Just... just... what?
The answer to all of that is probably “magic”.
Like that, Express Witch Labyrinth crashes right into what seems to be a train station. Labyrinths don’t have brakes, confirmed.
Brutal.
Looks like it’s not only magical girls who have territorial disputes going on. Although it’s nice that they won’t have to fight two witches at the same time, this is not exactly a relief when you consider these two were already struggling with the previous one, and this one just ripped it apart like crab.
As expected, Iroha’s arrows do no damage at all. When all seems lost…
A wild singing mini Kyuubei appears! Is this a shiny?
The singing Kyuubei distracts the witch and jumps towards Iroha, who uses her pro white cat catching skills to grab it, and… something happens. Whatever this Kyuubei did, Iroha’s having some flashbacks now. Sadly, the middle of a battle isn’t the best time to be having a BSOD and, despite Kuroe’s attempts to snap her out of it, they’re sitting ducks right now, a black and a white one.
Thankfully for them, though, they’re not alone in this barrier. This mystery blue haired girl spams flying spears and makes short work of the witch Iroha’s arrows didn’t even scratch earlier. She’s clearly at a whole ‘nother level.
Also, chibi Kyuubei’s gone. Totally not suspicious. Nope. Not at all.
So, from this OP miss get-the-heck-out-of-my-territory, who didn’t even bother saying her name, we learn that not only there is no salvation in Kamihama, there are more, stronger witches, and there are currently no Kyuubei. She gives them the Grief Seeds from the two witches before, and passes on a warning to them. Not the friendliest of magical girls. Though if you consider what happens when you run out of Grief Seeds, one could understand why it’d be undesirable having too many magical girls in the same place.
With this, Iroha and Kuroe take the train back to their town and things are totally awkward again.
Welp, seems like Kuroe doesn’t want to chat anymore, so we’ll have a dream sequence instead.
Forgive my lack of words, but this scene doesn’t need them. This is just… you couldn’t ask for a better representation of what being a magical girl wishing for salvation is like. Everyone has their own reasons, but in the end, having known despair, these girls are desperately clinging to this last hope called Kamihama. It’s almost a pilgrimage.
“Let’s go to Kamihama. We’ll be saved there”
And in the midst of all that is the mysterious girl from Iroha’s dreams.
(the track here, Paradero de Memoria, is also great btw)
Now, with various wishes written all over in the background, we get Kyuubei’s spiel about magical girls. I think this is word-by-word the same from the original too.
We now get to finally know what our protagonist’s wish was.
So Iroha wished to cure her younger sister’s illness, but the sister in question is now nowhere to be found. Worse: everything related to her is gone. Even Iroha, who made a wish for her sake, didn’t remember her existence until now. Oh man, that’s no normal disappearance. What happened? Guess that’s what Iroha will have to find out now.
With that, we conclude the first episode of Magia Record(’s s1)!
This is a really strong first episode in my opinion. It decently introduces our protagonist, sets up the mysteries we will be dealing with from here on and also manages to trace connections with the original, while using the viewer’s previous knowledge to give a whole different impression to some scenes. You wouldn’t be like “hell no” at the rumor there at the start if you didn’t know the truth about magical girls, and I doubt that final scene would hit that hard either. It’s just really good at this and it’ll continue doing that from now on. I love it.
Speaking of the final scene, me having watched the original over five years ago might also be part of it but that is really my favorite scene in Madoka overall. I just really really love that scene. (Seriously, I’ve watched this scene so many times I know it by heart now. Help.)
Alas, I lied, the episode’s not over yet, we still have our classic anime first episode ending-opening to watch. So let’s listen, to Gomakashi:
This logo’s real pretty.
So yeah, pretty standard anime opening. If you pay attention, there are some references to Connect too, what with the selfcest and whatnot. Although I managed to mistake this when I first watched, this one’s actually sung by the trio TrySail rather than ClariS. That’s the VAs for Iroha, Asakura Momo; Yachiyo (the get-out-of-my-territory girl), Amamiya Sora and Natsukawa Shiina, whose character we’ve yet to meet. TrySail has a lot of cool songs, so do check them out if you haven’t already. (free ad)
This time, in fact, the episode is over! Whew, I did say this was going to be long, but not even I thought it’d be this long. By the time this is posted I should have a backlog of these, so my plan is to post one everyday until we are done. I hope you had fun reading this here rant and I’ll be looking forward to meeting you guys again tomorrow, same place, maybe same hour, so we can go on and watch episode 2 together!
(P.S.: I am considering doing a series of posts at a later date comparing the anime to the game, but we’ll see. The first few chapters are fine, but the game is stupidly long, so I feel it’d take a lot of motivation and stamina I’m not sure I have at the moment. There’s also the possibility watching the first arc again would bring back my yt copy-apocalipse grief back and that’d suck, definitely don’t wanna go through that again.)

“What?!” Patton cries, Roman stands shushing him. “You did this!” Patton turns pointing his finger at Logan, complete disappointment. “Seriously? Not enough evidence Logan?” He snatches his hands away as Virgil approaches, leaving after a quick look at the group. The door slamming behind him.
“That was a shitty thing to do Logan” Virgil condescends. Logan bites his tongue, fully aware his complaint might have been tasteless. “I mean really? You couldn't let it play out in court?” Virgil ticks, bouncing hyper in his stance.
“I mean…” He looks to Roman and sighs “Yes… I rescind my motion” Roman groans already ripping apart his submission. “Apologies, but now I must check on Patton” He bows out of the room, making his way through the bustling halls. People fill it, the noise echoing through as it bounces across the walls. He knocks softly hoping the door is still open for him.
“Can I come in?” Logan requests, his knuckle still rapping on the door. Something shuffles behind the wooden barrier before it opens, Pattons pout becomes present
“I don't know can you?” He jokes lazily. Logan follows him in, standing across from him but somehow this time he feels uninvited. A stranger in his home. “I'm really not in the mood to talk Lo” though it's still there, it feels forced. Had he really done something so truly wrong?
“I rescinded my motion” He informs, Patton remains continuing as he organizes himself. “Patton?”
---
“Pretty dramatic those two” Roman notes as Logan ushers himself away. Virgil taps the desk lightly nodding. “Virge? Everything ok?”
“I actually wanted to talk to you,” Virgil says in a quiet whisper, his voice failing him. Roman swallows but allows him to continue.
---
“I want to talk” Patton decides, Logan's heart drops below his knees, his posture shakes. He clears his throat but allows Patton to continue, not that the lawyer looks as though he wants to. “I just think...that I have had some time-
---
“-To think about everything. And Roman I...I really like you” Virgil shines through, a weak smile as the judge only sweats.
“I...like you too. But I'm not sure I like where this is going” Roman chuckles, his laugh hoarse as he swallows any hope.
---
“Just listen ok?” Patton begs, Logan shakes his head. He's tired of listening, he wants to speak, he wants his voice to die out from his words running too much.
“No, let me speak. Let me tell you something! Please, Patton” Logan only begs back, should he descend to his knees and place his hands together? Is that what it would take, Patton looks up blinking rapidly. “You're...you're crying,” He says biting his tongue, Patton meets his eyes and sure enough he was, how dare Logan make him. And how dare Patton do this to him.
---
“I think we are moving too fast” Patton and Virgils voices join across the halls in broken unison. Logan and Roman stop as their own minds connect the same saddened thoughts.
---
“Is this about my motion? I rescinded it!” Logan argues, he doesn't mean to raise his voice but it happens. He's upset, he's not sure how to deal with this overwhelming feeling. He's fought in a hundred court battles, lost a million times, but nothing had hurt more than this.
“It's not just...no Logan-” He stops taking a beat, allowing the world around him to just pause for one moment. “There's just a lot ok? This isn't just about me, I have two kids to think about. What happens to them if I let you in my life and then-”
“What?” Logan moves towards Patton, he takes his hands desperate for the connection. “I'm not Liam” Patton laughs softly, shaking his head.
“No, you're not” You're so much worse. He says shutting his eyes, Logan uses his finger to wipe away an escaped tear. He pulls away feeling Logan tug, he flinches not meaning to, Logan releases him quickly, a soft gasp.
“Patton I'm so sorry” He rushes, Patton waves him off. He's not Liam, he's not Liam, he's not Liam. The words repeat in his head, so why was he so incessant on pushing away. Is it because he has the choice? The option? No...there's something more.
I'm scared
“It's fine, an overreaction on my part,” He says, his voice falling flat. Logan sighs defeated wanting to take him knowing well enough, he's lost that right. “I...have to go,” Patton decides. Logan allows him to, wishing he had just stopped him.
And Patton wishes, he could say what he had really wanted to say.
But to risk being seen as what he's always been seen? Was it worth it?
Don't get emotional Patton
---
“What?” Roman laughs nervously, his palms growing sweaty as he stares at Virgil's remaining face. “Aha...very funny” He cautions slowly, Virgil looks away not wishing to meet his saddened eyes to Romans ever hopeful ones.
“It's...it's not a joke Ro” Virgil's voice is so soft, Roman almost wishes he couldn't hear him. “I'm sorry…” And he is, but now as he watches Roman and thinks back on everything, Damian. Damian always comes first, and he can't, he won't let his own needs hurt who he loves most.
“I just...don't understand. So what now?” Roman questions, Virgil shrugs, hoping the weight will go with it. “Virge, I need you to work with me here” Roman gives a weary smile, Virgil refuses to look up. He refuses to fall into the enchantment that is the amber flame of Romans eyes.
“I...I don't know...I'm so sorry Ro-” He pauses, missing when the nickname was used for happy things. Happy feelings. “-Man, Roman...I'm sorry” He hopes the tears aren't visible, but Romans focused more on the tug beneath his chest.
“No, I am...for overstepping or whatever” Roman mumbles, too tired to fight. He glances once more at Virgil before leaving his own chambers. And leaving crumbs of his heart behind. Virgil wants to cry out, he wants to call for him. Come back, but the words sit lump in his throat, knowing he doesn't have that option or argument in him anymore.
Please...
~~~
“Moving too fast my ass” Logan grumbles into his desk, setting his things down he allows the musty room to consume him. “Dammit” he snaps, his body falls to the chair allowing his heart to sink away. “You always do this” He tells himself, flipping through the pages.
It hurt so much more this time, the raw feeling as Patton walked away was something Logan had not experienced. He had been involved before sure, but something never felt right. He had not cared so much, to the breaking point where his head hurt being away from them. His hands shook without their touch, his breath seized every time Patton smiled. He missed the kiss, it was stupid but he had never felt so safe and desperate for more. It was silly, Logan knew this.
It hurt so much more...and he had let it slip away. To run its rapid course through his heart, leaving a frozen mark, to thaw as all he had left were memories.
“L? Are you ok?” Virgil's voice makes its way through, pushing down the barrier he had created. The lawyer looks up, adjusting his glasses. “Hey…” He sets himself down on the other side of the desk, examining Logans fragile demeanor.
“No I'm fine, god this isn't me” Logan argues, he straightens himself, finishing with the tie. “The case, have you discussed with Haley yet?” He inquires, taking his notes. Virgil eyes him but decides against anything.
“No...she's been in meetings all week but...soon” He begins slowly. “Dude are you sure you're good?” Virgil checks again, Logan has regained his usual posture. He's seemingly, to anyone else, himself.
“I'd rather not discuss it” Not with you. The only person he wants to talk to is Patton, but alas. It's almost funny, he typically would go to Patton for these things, and there the lawyer would be. Smiling as he ushered Logan into a seat, checking in on him constantly. His body ached, he missed him so much.
What is wrong with me?
“Then talk to Patton” Virgil suggests, leaning back comfortably. Logan scoffs rubbing under his glasses, his eyes increasingly red. “Oh no...what happened?”
“I could say the same to you” logan sits up, fully aware of the less than cheery mood Roman had been as of late. “Trouble in paradise?” Logan mocks, Virgil rolls his eyes but nods.
“That's exactly it. Its paradise, it's perfect” Virgil marvels, not being able to help the image of Roman snuggling close to him as they fall heavily asleep. “When is it going to crumble? When is all just going to fall apart. And what about Dee? I can't do that to him, he loves Roman”
The kids love you
“Oh my god, is it really just about the kids? I mean I'm genuinely asking” Logan interjects, Virgil's eyes grow wide.
“Logan, you're smart” Virgil begins
“True” Logan confirms, Virgil stares
“And humble” He mumbles but continues “But yeah, it really is just about the kids. Or kid” Virgil corrects “Damian is my entire world, there is nothing I wouldn't do for him, for his smile” Virgil smiles himself, imagining his small son waddling towards him, arms out ready for a hug. “I'm sure Patton feels the same. But when love and romance gets involved…” He shoots a coy glance at his friend “I mean they come first. Always, the kids adore you. We can all see that, Patton sees that. But what happens when they stop? Or when you decide to hurt Patton? Or hurt them?” Logan shoots up
“I would never” His voice is as firm as the ground they stand upon.
“Easy, it's a hypothetical. What happens if you break up? It's not just hurting Patton, he has to explain to his children why you aren't coming around anymore. Why you don't ‘love’ them anymore” Virgil tries his best at a supportive smile “I mean hell, they're so little. And it's even worse for Patton and I. They don't have another parent, we are all they have. We are what they are used to, what happens when you come in and establish a whole new way they live and then leave? Do you know how detrimental that'll be? And what-”
“This is all based on the idea that I would ever leave Patton” Logan interrupts once more, his thoughts pouncing. “And what about Patton? Doesn't he get a say?” He asks knowing how ridiculous it sounds.
“Of course he does, but Logan we won't get to be sad, we won't get our mourning period. Someone breaks up with you and that's...unfortunately a you problem. But we have more than just ourselves, and can you say for certain that you wouldn't leave Patton? And what happens if he decides to end it? Logan, I'm so sorry, I am but...there are just some things you don't understand right now” Right now, as if one day he would be blessed with the gift of children? But he doesn't want new children, it's stupid! He knows, he knows how stupid it is, but he wants Remus and Valerie. He wants them, he loves them, he wants to watch them go to their first day of school, watch them graduate. And he wants to do it all with Patton, a prideful Patton by his side.
What the hell...is wrong with me?
“I need to talk to him” Logan knows this because he needs to say his piece. “No, I wish things would go back to normal. I hate this, I hate all of this” He complains, Virgil takes his hand squeezing it gently.
“Breathe ok?” He requests, Logan does just that. “Let's go through this, slowly” Logan nods and so he recalls everything. From the moment Patton's lips met his, to the moment he felt the spark fizzle out as Patton walked away. “Now, not to get all Emile on you, but how does that make you feel?”
“Like...like I finally understand when people talk about love.” Logan realizes, his eyes flutter as a familiar sensation returns. All sparks can be reignited.
~~~
“Focus on the case Patton,” The lawyer tells himself as he twists the knob on the door, the cold catching him stepping into the courtroom. He knows Logan is there, sitting idle with Reeve on his side but he chooses not to look up. Not to feel the utter pain he has felt all morning, and be hit with yet another wave of regret for his words.
“Patton” He shuts his eyes but turns, Logan comes towards him, something different. A quick blush and Pattons returns to who he was before everything. How could someone make him feel so…
“Are you ok?” Patton checks, Logan looks taken aback, re-doing his step.
“You're asking me that?” Logan stabilizes himself, coming face to face with Patton.
“Of course...Logan I still..” He trails off, shaking his thoughts away. “Nevermind” He fidgets with his empty finger, where typically a ring would lay. “Good luck...uh today” He murmurs, what has he done? Ten years, ten years of friendship, ten years thrown away out of fear. How pathetic he was.
“Right, thank you” Logan nods, defeated he returns to his desk. Reeve continues his conversation and Logan tries his hardest to listen, but his eyes wander. Why is the room so quiet? Where was everyone? Were they there...early?
“Patton!” The lawyers turn as the doors swing open, in true dramatic fashion they stand in unison. Emile stumbles in, a worried look spreads across his face. Logan and Patton approach together, Patton places a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Are you alright Em?” Patton wonders, checking his friend.
“Its... it's your client...its George” He shakes his head as Patton's hand falls. “He...I'm so sorry” Emile takes a breath as the doors open once more. Virgil, Remy, and Haley appear, George in tow handcuffed tightly. Patton lightly pushes past Emile, Logan watches him.
“Virge...whats going on?” His voice catches, Virgil bites his lower lip refusing to meet Patton's eyes. “Rem? Captain Bloomington?” Patton's franticness becoming more apparent.
“I'm so sorry Patton” Virgil sets it up, Haley steps forward.
“George Hoff was found at a murder scene, the case is over mister Hart. Mister Hoff will be going to jail for a long time” Surely the world hadn't actually collapsed had it? Patton stutters, feeling himself lose control, Logan and Virgil race forward taking either side of him. Haley nods allowing Remy to take George away, following them after.
“No” Patton whispers, he clutches to Logan first, his eyes threaten him.
“Patton...I'm so sorry” Logan stabilizes the lawyer, stroking his face carefully. He allows everything to wash away, nothing matters but this moment right now, right here.
“No he can't be...he can't be guilty” Patton whispers, he had worked so hard….for a month this couldn't...this couldn't…
“Patton?” Logan looks to his face, his eyes glazed over. Nothing lives behind them, just Patton's round glasses hiding the facade. His lower lip quivers, Patton watches the world around him. Virgil meets Logan's eyes and nods, he leaves the room, giving them this solitary moment. Reeve slips out with Virgil.
“I'm so sorry” Patton mumbles pulling away from the most gentle grasp, he gives Logan another look before going to his desk.
“Sorry? Why?” Logan questions, he goes to Patton's side. He gestures wildly to everything, grabbing the desk.
“All of this! Everything I put you through. The case, what I said, what I...did” The kiss, our kiss, Patton winces remembering it. “Logan I'm so sorry” Patton looks away, he isn't there anymore “I was wrong...George…”
“Patton you cou-”
“But I could have! And I should have! There was so much evidence, I'm so sorry. I defended...a murderer” He spits at himself, Logan hated it. He hates watching someone hate themselves so much, to the point where a fire burns their eyes with pure hatred...for themselves. “I'm so sorry” He shakes his head, he extends his hand to Logan. “Congratulations,” He barely breathes “You won” Patton lingers longer than he should before ushering himself away. Logan's eyes track his every step, a sharp breath. Virgil returns slipping in quietly, Logan nods.
“I won”
“Yeah., congrats dude” Virgil's praise is genuine but his voice falls flat.
“Then why doesn't it feel like it?” Logan asks, Virgil shrugs leaning on the desk. Logan groans. “Damnit, he's not guilty” Logan sighs, Virgil props himself up eyeing the lawyer.
“Ok, what?”
“No I'm with protractor” Remy enters, Virgil throws his hands into the air. “Virge, dude, just listen. You don't find it even a little odd? I mean George shouldn't have been able to escape. And the only two people with access to his cell were me, you and-”
“Haley” Virgil whispers, Remy snaps nodding. He moves towards the jury box, spreading out some files he had brought. Virgil and Logan approach, examining them. “These are the murder files, and...the letters!” Virgil remembers, ordering them from the first one to the latest.
“So what? We unscramble the letters? Then what?” Logan questions rather forcefully, the doubt in his voice obvious. Virgil nods joined by Remy.
“It's all we've got” Remy notes already using the whiteboard to tape the letters up. Logan sighs and helps him, while Virgil goes through old files.
“Ok read out the letters to me” Virgil requests, Remy nods.
“E, L, I, T, A, L, W, S, L, I, A, A” He recites as he had done so many times before. Logan begins working almost instantly, rapid-fire Virgil almost can't keep up. He rearranges the letters a million times, some words form, here and there but nothing concrete.
“It's like a weird game of hangman” Logan mutters, Virgil couldn't agree more. “I can get some words, but nothing makes...sense” He bites through his teeth. “You have the obvious words…’ it’”
“Great, clowns” Remy jokes, Virgil rolls his eyes.
“Or ‘all’” Logan shows, leaving the others outside of the phrase.
“It all?” Virgil reads “All it?” He tries, Logan groans shaking his head. “Hey, take it easy” Logan scratches his head furiously, worried creases appear upon Virgil. “Wait...what about ‘was’?” Virgil goes, sorting it. It still works, leaving four letters. Logan follows his movements, slowly his determined eyes reignite as he jumps upon the words.
“It was all,” He says, Virgil and Remy lean forward. “Four letters remain. A, E, L and I”
“El? No...um...Ale?” Remy suggests, almost as if something inside had been turned on, his eyes grew wide as well. “Lie” He barely whispers, Logan turns to him snapping.
“It was all...a lie” He pieces together, the three fall silent as the phrase comes together in front of them.
“Nice going Sherlock” Virgil pats him on the back, knowing they just pushed themselves further from a closed case. “Now what?”

So You Want To Play Hades
I spent six hours coming up with that title because I have problems in my mind which I refuse to either examine or resolve.
So, Hades! The latest work from Supergiant Games, who brought you the interactive soundtracks to Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre, all superb games in their own rights known for their intuitive gameplay, build-your-own-hard-mode difficulty style, incredible atmosphere and characterization, thought-provoking stories, and that sexy, sexy fuckin’ music.
Like, listen to this sometime it’s amazing (all of their soundtracks are available from them on Youtube, by the by, though if you like ‘em you can support the creators by buying the music from them directly too):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH3Aoj1nw58
You’re likely asking, quite reasonably, why in the infinite and undying fuck I’m writing this post right now, and the long and short of it is I want more people to talk Hades with so now y’all are gonna get hit with the sales pitch and what I hope will be a helpful beginner’s guide if you decide to get into the game. Let’s get into that first part, shall we?
Thou Shalt Subject Your Gods To Market Forces
(Image sourced from Supergiant’s website)
Hades is an action-roguelike/lite that places you in the role of Prince Zagreus, secret son of Hades. Zag is trying to move out of his father’s house and live somewhere else for awhile and, well, Dad’s just being an entire dick about the whole thing. Hades challenges you to face down the endless ranks of the dead one chamber at a time, gathering the resources you need to breach upward through the Greek underworld and open the mighty gates into the living world. You can acquire it on Steam or on the Epic Store.
How do you know if Hades is or isn’t for you? If you like action games with tight controls and widely varied playstyles, we’ve got you covered here (if you’re thinking in terms of previous Supergiant offerings, Bastion has the most bones in). Hades also offers a great character-focused narrative, centering around the relationships Zagreus has and develops with the people around him - from legendary shades like Achilles and Sisyphus, to the gods of Olympus, to the cthonic gods of the underworld like Charon, Nyx, and the Furies - which fully incorporates the conceits of the genre. Unlike many roguelikes which sorta quietly elide failed runs or deaths, Zag’s defeats are part of his journey. After all, he’s already in the underworld. Where the fuck else is he going to go when he dies? Connecticut?
Though I can gush about the characters and narrative all day (and I’ll do it a bit more later), don’t get me wrong: Hades expects you to perform some pretty tight mechanics. Since dying is just the end of this run and not the game, the game feels pretty free to take brutal measures; the environments you move in are full of deadly traps, the seething ranks of the dead outnumber you to vast degrees, and you’ll fight a dizzying mix of opponents who do not hesitate to catch you in cross-fires, push you into lava, or drop bombs when you kill them because fuck you for succeeding you weird godling bastard. If you get easily frustrated or flustered, Hades may be quite stressful for you; before it’s anything else, it’s an action game with a heavy focus on combat, and if you decide to ride this train that’s the price of the ticket. If you relish the challenge and especially if you like the satisfaction of watching your play improve, though, it’s one hell of a ride.
In terms of accessibility features, Hades is a mixed bag. It has subtitles and aim assistance available, as well as a variety of supported languages and control adjustments which can alter how you do things like dash or attack, but it’s missing, for instance, a colorblind mode (and that’s gonna be important here in a minute), and many enemy behaviors & traps have audio cues which are not part of the current subtitle support. A rumble feature for controllers that have it is supported; Hades strongly suggests the use of a controller, but I know several players who choose to use a mouse & keyboard and seem to prefer it. Semi-recently, a God Mode option was added which empowers you when it’s turned on and does so further every time you die; it’s the closest Hades comes to an ‘easy’ mode, and while reception of it from my fellow players has been highly positive I’ve not tried it for myself.
If you’ve liked action games in the past, I’d highly endorse giving Hades a try as long as it’s accessible for you. The current build of the game (just before formal release) is selling at $24.99 USD on Steam right now, and like...I am not a highly skilled Gaming Individual(tm). I lose at games a lot. I play most of my games on Easy or maybe Normal if I’m really feeling like my dick is big - and with that in mind, I loved this one enough to buy it twice. I love the tight feeling of the combat, the way the mechanics feel, its gorgeous environments and its captivating characters. Hell, that’s why I’m out here writing a whole-ass article.
Stealth, Guile, Subtlety, And Other Things You Will Not Need - Getting Started In Hades
(Artwork sourced from the Hades wiki)
So you’ve decided to acquire Hades, you already own it, or the first part of this article was intriguing enough for you to look at the advice portion and see what sort of game you could be dealing with. Hades can be intimidating at first; it throws a lot of stuff at you, very quickly, and while it gives you some strong guidance on what to do with many of the resources you’ll acquire not all of those uses are immediately intuitive. The following is a guide to help your first few runs go a bit more smoothly and work on the fundamentals that will help you through your entire experience.
Let’s start with some General Tips that will help you out with every run and every weapon:
- Relax. No, seriously: relax. You haven’t ‘failed’ a run if you don’t beat the final boss. Hell, you probably haven’t even ‘failed’ a run if you die in Tartarus. If you learned something or got any permanent resource - gemstones, darkness, nectar, keys, blood, diamonds, ambrosia - then that run was a success. Even if the game wasn’t currently early access and thus without a proper ‘end’ at the moment, it’s supposed to be fun. Don’t castigate yourself for dying, just dive screaming back in and rip your vengeance from the spectral chest of your slayer.
- Always Be Moving. You only have so many hit points (you start a save file with a max of 50 and the most you can start a given run with is 200) and healing is limited over the course of a run. If you’re standing still, you’re getting hit. Zag’s quick on his feet - keep him moving and use your dash liberally. Once you’ve dealt some damage, leave and let your enemies swing at empty air, then dash back in and bully them back into their graves. When you start a dash you’re invulnerable until the dash finishes, which can make for some real cheeky dodges once you’ve had time to learn enemy timing.
- Watch And Learn. Early on in the game you’ll be learning about new enemies every chamber, especially when you start transferring to new zones and all of the enemies you’ve been facing just stop being a thing. Take the chance to know your foe! You’re not on a clock: don’t leap into the fight immediately. Dash around and watch how your enemies move and attack. What’s the limitations of their tactics? The reach on their attacks? How fast do they swing and move? If you’d like to watch some of that stuff ahead of time, I’d like to suggest amber_cxc’s Twitch channel: she’s been doing a lot of runs and speedruns of Hades of late, among the other games she plays.
- Manipulate Your Rewards. Certain things in Hades can only be offered a limited number of times per run, and once you’ve hit your quota they stop appearing. You can take advantage of this to get more Boons, Centaur Hearts, and Poms of Power. Specifically, you can only have up to two Daedelus Hammers and up to three Hermes Boons. If you can knock these out early I highly endorse doing so; they’re never bad to have, and even if somehow you want none of what they have to offer getting them off the RNG will help you later. Additionally, you can use Keepsakes (more on these in a minute) to manipulate who you get Boons from, when, by changing in and out of them at each biome. In this way you can control the shape of your build for the run.
- Accept That Your Dick Energy Is Fucking Huge. A lot of games try to keep you humble. Dark Souls is infamous for it, of course, and others in this genre such as Crypt of the Necrodancer and Enter the Gungeon do not reward haste at all. That is not this game. Walk into Hades like you’re the lord god of the Big Dick Dimension even if you know you’re not; take risks and learn from experience how you can mitigate, manipulate, or cancel out those risks. That unearned confidence won’t just help you with tip one (Relax), it’ll help you practice in those high-pressure situations which will occur more and more as your Heat rises.
- A Brief Note On Projectiles. This game has a few kinds of projectiles that you’ll need to learn to identify. Balls and Arrows can be broken - hit them with an Attack and they pop and won’t hurt you. Waves cannot be broken; they travel fast along the ground and have to be dodged or deflected. Lasers can neither be broken nor deflected. Traps can’t be broken, and deflecting them doesn’t always make them safe for you; these include the lava balls in Asphodel, Inferno Bombs, and the shit spit out by Bothers and Pests. Know your foe and always be moving.
In terms of the resources you’re offered, there are broadly two kinds: in-run resources, and out-of-run resources. Let’s talk briefly about in-run ones.
- Boons: Boons are the powerful gifts of your Olympian relatives. They change how you play during your run by augmenting your abilities (like your Attack, Special, or Dash) or by offering passive benefits. In general, look at Aphrodite, Athena, or Dionysus if you want powerful defenses, Ares, Artemis, or Zeus for powerful attacks, and Poseidon and Demeter for a combination of damage and utility. Different gods will be good with different weapons, and we’ll get into that later. Boons have a Rarity and a Level; Rarity determines their starting power and how well they scale if they do scale, and Level is that scaling.
- Centaur Hearts: +25 max and current HP for this run. Do you like not dying?
- Poms of Power: Poms increase the Level of a Boon by 1, which generally makes it better at doing whatever it does. Not all Boons will level up, but the ones that you can attach to your Attack, Special, Cast, Dash, or Call always do. You do eventually hit diminishing returns with these, so you’ll generally want to spread the love around if you keep picking up Poms.
- Obols: DOLLAH DOLLAH BILLS Y’ALL. Obols are the coins preferred by Charon, the Ferryman, who will take them from you for goods and services. Obols can be turned into all other resources - even out-of-run resources. They’re almost always a great choice of investment.
These in-run resources are presented as potential rewards when you’re selecting chambers. I tend to run heavy on Boons and Obols myself, but your own play style is likely to differ! Experiment with the feel of acquiring various rewards and see what you like to invest in. After all, they’re only for the run you’re on; you literally can’t take it with you.
Out-of-run resources are used to permanently advance Zagreus’s power, his relationships, or both. They are as follows:
- Cthonic Keys: Used to unlock new weapons and new parts of the Mirror of Night. Once your weapons and Mirror are wholly unlocked these keys stop being useful more or less instantly, and can be safely traded at the Wretched Broker between runs to acquire Nectar (but see Gemstones, below).
- Gemstones: Early in the game, Gemstones can be traded in at the House Contractor between runs in order to enhance the underworld; in particular, they can be used to install fountain rooms, to open up access to Chaos and Erebus, to give you access to Infernal Troves (and upgrade said troves), and to add in-run resources to Keys, Nectar, and Gemstones. These services are in the first tab of the House Contractor and you should buy them out as soon as possible so that your runs can springboard off of these powerful additions. Once that’s taken care of, Gemstones can be used to renovate the House of Hades, including Zag’s bedroom and the lounge, again at the House Contractor.
- Nectar: The nectar of the gods is in short supply in the underworld, and is a treasured gift that Zagreus can offer to his friends. In most cases, the first time you give a character Nectar they will trade you a powerful Keepsake in return; these are run-altering tools you select at the start of each run and change how you play. Early on, spread the love, but once you’re full up on Keepsakes you can feel free to develop relationships through gift-giving however you see fit.
- Darkness: The power of Night is used to give permanent, powerful passive benefits to Zagreus via the Mirror of Night in his bedroom. I would suggest using Darkness to get your extra Dash and extra hit points before anything else, but once you’ve got those tools kinda fuck around and find out. Eventually a dialogue option with Nyx will unlock the flip side of the Mirror’s talents, which must be developed separately and cost even more Darkness; you’ll want lots of this and you’ll want it for a very long time. Oh, and try to save aside 8,888 Darkness for a rainy day. You’ll need it.
- Titan Blood: Offered by the first and last bosses at each level of Heat (more on Heat later). Titan Blood is used to upgrade your weapons, making them better at doing all of the things they do, as well as to unlock Aspects of those weapons. We’re still shy one Aspect as of the latest patch, so ah, don’t stop collecting this. You’ll always have a use for it.
- Diamonds: Offered by the second boss at each level of Heat. Diamonds are used to buy plot-relevant renovations to the House of Hades, to advance certain relationships, and to acquire the fishing minigame and in-game access to the soundtrack within the House. Like Blood, you’ll have a use for these for a long, long time.
- Ambrosia: Offered by the third boss at each level of Heat. When you reach the point at which you can no longer offer people Nectar, genuine Ambrosia from Olympus becomes the princely gesture by which you can show your gratitude. You may be tempted to trade this for Blood early on. Don’t.
When you’re starting out, Darkness and Gemstones will be the gods of your new world, followed closely by Cthonic Keys You’ll run out of immediate need for Gemstones faster than you will for Darkness, but by that time you’ll either be comfortable with Hades or you’ll have determined it’s not for you. Focus on unlocking access to your new weapons, upgrading the underworld itself, and paying off your talents; at this stage, escaping the underworld isn’t really a priority so much as setting up for your eventual triumph is.
And When You Can No Longer Lay Waste - Infernal Arms And Heat
(Artwork sourced from the Hades Wiki)
The assault rifle with under-slung mortar launcher is definitely my favorite ancient Greek weapon.
So I’ve mentioned unlocking weapons, and I’ve mentioned that Hades offers varied play styles, so I suppose I ought to talk about them. Zagreus’s weapons - his Infernal Arms - form the first layer of your play style choices, which will be augmented by your in-run choices, and the second layer comes in the form of the Pact of Punishment and its Heat. Each weapon has differing values for its attacks and behaves very differently. I’m not gonna give you the specific numbers here - we have a wiki for that - and will instead make some general statements on how they play and what might pair well with them.
- Stygius, the Blade of the Underworld: You start each save file with this bad boy. Stygius is a generalist weapon that leans somewhat towards speed; its Attack is a three-hit combo that ends in a Thrust with knockback, while its Dash Attack (note: these are not the same with ANY weapon) is solely the Thrust, still with knockback. Its Special, slower than the Attack, is a high-damage shockwave that breaks enemy projectiles and knocks them back. You might be asking yourself, Vox, why would I Special when it makes people leave sword range, at which point I will direct you back to Always Be Moving; your Special makes your enemies Go Away, which saves you hit points. Stygius can build into almost anything, though its Attack benefits the least from Zeus and Poseidon, and is notable for having the most wild fucking Hammer options. Some of them do little things like make your Special bigger, but then you get stuff like Hoarding Slash (deal extra damage equal to 5% of your Obols), World Splitter (you do one big swing with a base damage of 80) and motherfucking CURSED SLASH, which is where Stygius rips a line of cocaine off of a mirror, cuts your health by 60%, and then heals you for 2 every time you hit something. My advice for this is whatever you start down, commit. Stygius might build into anything, but it can’t build into everything: once you choose a boon path, pick things to compliment that and go fucking ham.
- Varatha, the Eternal Spear: The forgotten child of Hades’ weapons, Varatha is a versatile weapon that, like Stygius, does a bit of everything - and unlike Stygius, does it all at the same time. Varatha’s base attack is a series of three long-range thrusts with low damage, and its Special throws the spear in a straight line, at which point it hovers in the air until you Special again; it follows a straight line from its position to your current one, damaging anything in that line. Last, but not least, you can perform a powerful Spin Attack by holding down the Attack button and charging up. Spin is one of the strongest single hits in the game, but you do have to stop moving to charge it up. However, you can dash out of the charge - even better, dashing releases the Spin at the end of your dash. This means that once you learn the timings of your charges, you can use Spin to attack and dodge at the same time, in a wide circle around yourself. Unlike Stygius, Varatha benefits to an extent from splitting your build up; its Attack wants big hitters like Aphrodite, Artemis, or Poseidon, whose high multipliers pair amazingly with the spin, while its Special can mount debuffs or stranger forms of damage like those offered by Dionysus and Ares. If you start building into one thing, but then Hammer into an alternate focus, the end result is still going to be pretty cohesive. Like Generic Goodstuff, or want a weapon to use while building up many divine relationships? Varatha does it all.
- Aegis, the Shield of Chaos: Just because this thing has the only block function in the game doesn’t mean it’s a defensive weapon. Aegis is a fast-moving melee weapon whose hits cause native knockback, slamming foes into walls, up against cliffs, and through traps & magma. Since Aegis throws people around it’s great for a highly aggressive style; dash in, hit them, and watch them slide away before they can do damage back to you. Its Special throws the shield Captain America style, where it ricochets off of opponents and obstacles before eventually returning. Use this with care; you can’t attack or block while your Special is out. Holding down the Attack button begins to charge a Bull Rush; while you’re charging, you’re immune to damage in the direction the shield is facing, and then when you release you dash to the end of the indicated line, damaging anything you hit. Despite how sexy that sounds, Bull Rush is honestly kinda slow and can be hard to build for specifically; instead, Bull Rush is best used to get out of bad situations, or to outlast big long boss combos, especially those used by the first and second bosses who are known to spit out absolute STREAMS of projectiles. Aegis hits fast and gets lots of bonus damage against normal enemies by bullying them against walls for that sweet, sweet Wall Slam damage, but it craves big damage multipliers less than some other weapons; consider using Zeus, Dionysus, or Demeter for your Attack, saving big damage choices for if you can get a Dash Attack build going. Special is great for mounting utility like Aphrodite or Poseidon that let you control the engagement further, just remember to think before you hit the yeet button.
- Coronacht, the Heart-Seeking Bow: Meet your first ranged weapon! Coronacht deals damage in a straight line by charging up a shot; when your line flashes, release the shot for a Power Shot that deals extra damage. Its Special is...bad, I’m gonna be real; it’s a wide-sweeping volley of arrows that deal individually low damage and will rarely, if ever, hit the same target. Still, it has its uses. Coronacht benefits from either high damage or battlefield control on its Attack; look into Artemis, Aphrodite, Demeter, and Poseidon. Its Special is harder to build for, but Ares and Zeus both do well on it since they can cause damage out of proportion with the range and/or area of your volley. Play keep-away and use distance to get off those charge shots, and remember that you can break projectiles and hit multiple enemies with each attack. Avoid mounting odd damage (Ares or Dionysus) or utility (Athena) on your Attack; it’s not going to come out fast enough to take meaningful advantage of those tools.
- Malphon, the Twin Fists: Easily the angriest weapon in all of Hades, Malphon is a pair of massive fuck-off gauntlets that are used for fast-moving combos at extremely short range. It is unique in that its Attack has a Dash Attack, and its Special - a massive uppercut - has a dash upper, letting you sweep in and deal big damage in a tight area immediately. Though each of Malphon’s hits are individually small, it throws out so fucking many of them that you can put almost anything on your Attack and it’ll work out. Athena Attack? Why not, you’ll be swinging when the enemy is. Dionysus Attack? Poison stacking has never been easier! Artemis Attack? Sure, you don’t do a lot of base damage, but you swing so often that you’ll crit constantly and take advantage of passives like Support Fire. Your Special has much higher base damage and can easily become the focus of your build, and because it moves slower it wants bigger damage multipliers like Artemis or Aphrodite if it’s your focus. If it’s not your focus, consider Poseidon in its slot (to get enemies to Go Away) or a god that will combo with your Attack (for instance, if you’re doing Demeter Attack, consider Zeus Special so you can potentially pick up the Cold Fusion boon and get 10 seconds of free damage every time you tap the Special button). You pay a price for this ease of use: Malphon’s range is directly inside the enemy’s ass, which means you need to have razor-thin timing to dash out of the way of attacks and keep your combos going, especially if you get swarmed. Since Malphon can mount and build literally fucking anything, it’s the ideal weapon to use if you want to power-level Keepsakes; slap something on at the start of a run and then just never take it off. Sure, you’re letting the Three Fates decide your build, but fuck it, it all just works!
- The Adamant Rail: What if you invaded the underworld with a fucking machine gun. The Adamant Rail has an ammo counter; each Attack takes 1 bullet (and Dash Attack takes and fires 2), and you reload by pressing the right-hand stick in. Its Special is a slow-moving mortar that hits in a wide area. The Rail is a powerful and versatile weapon capable of engaging at great range, which tends to build either Attack or Special. If you’re building Special, look for big hits like Aphrodite, Artemis, or even Poseidon, and any Special upgrade at all from the Hammers. Attack usually wants utility or stacks - stuff like Poseidon, Demeter, Dionysus, or Zeus - but certain Hammer upgrades like Spread Shot might make it more worthwhile to invest in big hits for it if you get them early. However! Just because you’ve decided on a focus doesn’t mean you should neglect the other half of your weapon. For instance, an Attack-focused build might still entertain the Targeting System upgrade so that you can more easily land your hits and avoid the enemy, while a Special-focused one benefits from mounting debuffs like Weak or Chill on its Attack.
For any weapon, once you settle into a play style you enjoy, find ways to be rewarded for what you’re already going to do. If you enjoy, say, the Chiron Aspect for the bow which makes it into a Special-focused weapon, mount benefits like Doom or Weak on its Attack since you still have to use that to make your shit go-go. This applies more broadly too; if you’re saving up Gemstones for something, for instance, use the extra money you get during your run to visit the shops earlier and more often. Let Hades reward you for doing the things you already want to do.
To close this guide out I’m going to briefly touch on Heat, which is how Supergiant Games has manifested their signature build-your-own-hard-mode approach. After you clear the game with any weapon for the first time, you acquire access to the Pact of Punishment. This Pact lets you turn on hostile modifiers to your run, which each have a Heat value; once you clear the game with a weapon at any given level of Heat (0, 1, 2, etc) you can only get Titan’s Blood, Diamonds, and Ambrosia with that weapon by advancing to the next level of Heat. In this way the game gradually gets harder on a weapon-by-weapon basis.
So, what modifiers to turn on? Depends on what you’re good at and bad at, but I would highly, highly suggest that you get used to Extreme Measures, Middle Management, and Benefits Package as soon as possible. Not only are they sources of big Heat by themselves that don’t change too much of the run by themselves, but their primary difficulty is knowledge-based; once you know them, they’re practically free real estate. Since Heat is tracked per-weapon and not in total, you can also always go back to weapons you’re not as good with and use practice with them as an excuse to get more permanent resources that you can pour into the ones you prefer.
Obviously this guide is not comprehensive! I’ve left out a lot of things you might want to know, like boss patterns, enemy types, and a whole lot of stuff about characters. Some of these things I’ve not talked about because I don’t want to give spoilers; others I haven’t talked about because I’m, again, actually pretty bad at games and the Hades community has talented folks whose guides on Steam, on the Reddit, and on the wiki can provide you with thorough breakdowns of the math that makes the game work. Still, it’s my hope that this can ease your entry into the world of Hades and help guide you in those early runs when it can feel like you’re spinning your wheels. I look forward to hearing from you; reblogs and commentary are welcome!
See you all in Hell.

Hi again! You guys helped me a lot with my trolls, and you helped me a bit with her already, but if it’s alright I’d like another review!
Name: Cris Wright
Is this a reference to Phoenix Wright or do you just like the name? Hehe. I would almost recommend changing the surname to Binyot as a reference to Vinny Vinesauce, a really famous game corrupter, but… since I don’t know your reasoning behind this name, and human kid names tend to have less rhyme and reason, I will Approve It.
Age: 14 (or the equivalent of about 6.9 sweeps)
Weapon: Grappling hook!
As cool as that is, I think maybe hammerkind or scrapkind would work best for her, as a reference to her interests? It seems a lot more likely that she’d be carrying around her bangin’ hammer, or a piece of sharp scrap that she could kick ass with. Unless she utilized the grappling hook to get away from the beast in her home? But it doesn’t sound very useful to use a grappling hook inside a house… I guess I’d need more context LOL.
Inventory: Looks like an old point and click adventure game’s inventory system? Also it keeps track of her health. It has the possibility of getting ‘corrupted,’ but I’m not sure how it would get corrupted.
Since she’s a heart player, maybe it could get corrupted by giving her Way More Lives. Just hearts going all off the screen. Especially if she gets god-tiered in a really unorthodox way that could result in glitching.
Symbol: Missingno’s ghost version, colored green to match her glasses/ eyes! It matches both her love for video games and is sort of similar to how the events of her story play out. Thank you guys for the suggestion, back when!
Oh I’m glad it was helpful!
Handle: screapmetalMaster [SM] - screapmetal is for her scrap metal sculptures and her inability to type well. Master is because of her false confidence and bravado.
Quirk: types in all lowervase and often makes extremely easy to fix typos because she types extremely fast and doesnt check her spelling before pressing send and makes herself look like a complete dumbasss
FUCK i mean lowercase, also dumbass should ujust have like two s
JUST FUCK
(uses capitals to emphasize words, mostly curse words, and corrects herself using said curse words. Often makes typos in the correction as well. Doesn’t use commas or apostrophes, most of the time, and doesn’t capitalize names.)
Haha I love that, it’s a really simple and effective way to communicate her tendency towards haste. I think it makes sense that she’d be in a rush for a lot of reasons, not the least of which including her… lusus.
Lusus: Keeping this in because she sort of… does have one? A big beast in her home that chases her around that acted a bit like a parent when she was a very small baby. The beast is a creature beyond description. When she turned three, the monster kept away before eventually emerging to begin chasing.
Now I gotta ask… what kind of beast is it? Like you say it’s beyond description, so is it a first guardian or some chaotic sort? Or a spirit? Some sort of cosmic reach around monster projected by a juggalo? Weird stuff can happen in Homestuck so I’d not be too surprised by any of these options.
Personality:
Excitable, self-loathing.
Extremely excitable, as in she gets EXTREMELY EXCITED over things she is interested in. She hates sitting still, preferring to wander around aimlessly even if she has seen everything before. She has a hard time connecting to people, but if she does she will ride or die with them. She has a hard time believing anyone really likes her, but still tires her best to be what she considers likable. She doesn’t know what other people are like, though, so she often isn’t very good at making impressions. Every mistake is just another reason to hate herself, but she never lets other people know how she really feels about herself. She absolutely has a phobia of talking about herself, just the thought making her panic. She perceives everyone as being better than her, viewing herself as some kind of cosmic fuck-up that was shoved into the farthest corner of the galaxy to be forgotten.
She is very earnest, seeking ways to do things and enjoying problem solving, but when social interaction comes into play she is completely blank. She has never been around people, so this is to be expected, but it is still almost impossible to speak to others in real life. She has a bigger problem speaking to other humans, as trolls are easier for her to talk to because she relates more to them.
She has a phobia of being touched, but finds that she is okay when she initiates the touch.
Ooh, I do like this personality a lot… Being unable to sit still because of how she grew up and this feeling of suffering and this desire for closeness… An inability to connect emotionally and a search for a sense of self, a need to look inside and figure herself out… I also adore that her theme color is green, because it feels like a nice nod to the doom aspect, which feels pretty connected to her too.
I think you should focus a little more on her desire to build a cohesive identity. You mention her outward confidence/calling herself a master, so maybe make her someone who is a bit of a compulsive liar. Who tries to overstate who she is and what she is capable of, because that’s what she thinks people want to hear, and she wants to present this cohesive outward identity to try to find a sort of stability within herself.
Interests:
Turning scrap metal into very scraggly, usually sharp sculptures. She basically puts a pile of scrap down and hits it with a hammer.
Video games, or more specifically fucking up the game’s coding to make weird things happen.
Programming (In a broad sense)
“in a broad sense” made me laugh. My favorite thing people do is organizing game menu items in a particular code sequence to make events happen in speedruns. Would she do that sort of thing?
Adventure (in a “i want to see everything and mess it up!” way instead of an “i want to explore the world!” kind of way)
Maybe you should have her have like, a youtube channel or something of the short where she shows off her glitch fun to try to give herself an ego boost.
Title: Mage (??) of Heart
I’m… tempted to make her a Knight of Heart. I know Maroux is a knight, but Maroux’s a troll and Cris is a human, so that should be fine yeah? It just seems like she has a lot of need to self-focus and work on who she is and learn to be confident in herself and her abilities and her identity.
Land: CORRIDORS and SCRAP
Essentially leaving what she used to have and being thrown back into it, like the universe is telling her that she can never leave what she was born into. (if that makes sense)
Oh that’d be so stressful for her but you’re very right about it being a good idea. It would create a quest that forces her to work on self reflection and exploration instead of an examination of the world around her.
Dream Planet: Derse
For sure fitting!
thank you guys again!
Always happy to help! Thank you for sharing another wonderful character. Here’s the design notes:
So I really didn’t have much to edit here. I moved her face down to match the style’s proportions better, including moving the hairline down. I made the jacket a uniform color to preserve simplicity. And I added shoes (edited from fan-troll’s) because I feel like if she needs to run it’s a good idea for her to have some reliable running shoes. Unless she wears socks because she needs to sneak? But even then working with a ton of sharp metal scrap while shoeless seems foolish.
She’s a great character! I hope this helps!

Ive heard that drawing on yourself helps. Use a pen of some sort (nothing sharp though!) or a marker. Youll be able to feel where the pen/marker is and you can see where it was after. It wont hurt you (unless youre alergic to the ink) but it still can give you the feeling of something against your skin. It also can make your arms/legs/stomach/wherever you self harm look pretty and it could keep you from wanting to ruin that art. (Keep in mind: this is all what ive heard. Obviously itll be different for everyone just like anything else related to mental illnesses and/or self harm. Itll probably be trial and error for a while, but dont get discouraged)
Keeping yourself distracted also REALLY helps. Youtube is good for that if you have access to it, and so are video games that make you think and focus. If theres something going on around me and i need a distraction (say theres arguing going on, storms, something else that may be triggering to me, if im having a panic attack/getting close to a panic attack, close to/having a breakdown, etc), my go-to is Youtube. Watch whatever tends to make you laugh. Its hard to be sad or depressed or anxious when youre watching something funny or something that makes you happy (i suggest having a playlist of saved videos that make you happy/laugh for this. I have one called "meme" and its just funny videos ive found over time. You can watch tbese videos even if youre not sad/depressed/anxious/suicidal/etc too! Theyre just a bunch of videos you like). Depending on the situation, i also use games. I like to play minecraft and some puzzle games, and also CS:GO. In MC i play minigames and try to speedrun and both keep me pretty focused. Minigames make me focus on what game im playing and how i need to play it (especially if its arcade style). I also do some parkour on servers and, while frustrating, its good for focusing. Speedrunning is frustrating and im not very good at it BUT every world and every spawn is different. Everytime you play its a new experience and you have to be on the lookout for anything that can help you or hurt you.
My go-to puzzle game is Tricky Towers. You can play online, local, or solo. I usually end up playing solo bc not many people are online at like 2am (my time), but even playing solo is good! Theres a puzzle mode where you have to get as many pieces down as you can without reaching a certain point or dropping any - i usually play that one. Its my favorite gamemode to play solo. Theres also survival and races. You get 3 lives in survival and you win by putting all your pieces down first or surviving the longest. If youre playing with other people, you can also get powerups in both races and survival. Race is just get to the top as fast as possible.
CS:GO and shooter games can be good too (as long as they arent triggering to you). They personally make me hyperaware of whats around me (in game) and of what i am doing. Everything else sort of doesnt matter anymore. CS:GO is personally the only first person shooter i have (which is why im really only talking about it and no other shooting games). You can also play solo with bots or you can train and see if you can beat a certain time. You dont have to have the audio on if the noises trigger you, certain things will appear in the bottom left corner for you to see and itll keep you aware of whats going on. I like a lot of things about CS:GO bc theres a lot to think about each game and (depending on what gamemode youre playing) you have to work as a team a little bit, and if youre like me, youre always on your toes.
For any games, if you dont like to listen to the game audio, cant listen to it, or it is triggering to you, i suggest putting on some sweet tunes. I always have music in the background when im playing games. Its just another way to keep myself distracted and busy. I also just dont have audio on for some games bc they annoy me, and music fills the silence. Some games are really quiet and dont give much information thats helpful (or what is helpful is loud and everything else is inaudible) and music at a low level can help fill the silences. I personally have a few playlists/albums that i put on shuffle and sometimes i just put a song on repeat and jam to it while i play. If its a happier song/playlist, this also can help you feel a bit better!
Music is good regardless of what you are doing. I play music at night when i go to bed so i dont have the chance to get wrapped up in my thoughts and anxieties. I play music (or sometimes podcasts/youtube videos) in the background when i draw or write. I listen to music when i do hw. Its good background noise and it helps me keep my mind from wandering too much.
Idk how well this will work for staying away from self harm, but its worth a try. These are just a few things that tend to help me with anxiety and breakdowns (other than the marker/pen, never had to do that one). I hope they can help you too in some way! Stay safe both of you (mickey and the anon). So proud of both of you for being able to keep streaks without self harming and reaching out when you need it!
Hey, I recently broke my 6 months of not cutting and I keep having the urge to now and I really don't know what to do. Nothing else really helps and I just feel like I can't do this anymore and I'm just really lost rn
i mean i’m like in the same boat with you (two month streak) and i don’t have any ice here (my go-to) so uh if anyone can help us please do

JOURNALING V
content warning:
weight loss/talking about weight
medical/surgical discussions
it has been awhile since i updated anyone casually interested in this part of my life, hasn’t it.
well, part of that is b/c i’ve been busy. holidays and everything, also i’ve started a work out routine, but i’ll get into that in a moment. also i didn’t have any doctor appointments for like, literally 3 weeks straight, which was nice. much better than speed running it like i had been.
today is 11.11.19, (make a wish if you believe in that sort of thing) and i’ve decided i no longer want surgery.
let me back up here.
so, let me re-read my last post just to remember what i need to fill in... ah yes, the fun i had w/ the x-ray. that feels like it happened months and months ago.
well, since then , i’ve been trying to get my life a lot more organized. i’ve started a (bullet) journal (mostly b/c i love watching the aesthetic set-up videos on youtube) and in it have been tracking my progress by the numbers. for the first few weeks of trying to lose weight, i was weighing myself every other day, sometimes more than that. i became obsessive and felt like the numbers weren’t enough. i wasn’t losing enough and one weekend i had gained back like 1.7 lbs or something. but seeing any increase in the numbers upset me. even though when we are talking about 1 or 2 pounds in someone that’s got over 300 of them, it isn’t the same as if someone is more like a buck fifty.
being able to put it down somewhere physical and then keep a log so i can see the numbers adding up or going down in a catalog has been very helpful for my mental health. having just the numbers on a paper has allowed me to watch my weight go from 349 in the beginning of october to where it currently is (or was as of 11.6 i only weigh myself every other wednesday. why wednesday and why every other week, i don’t know. it just seemed like more than once a month but less than every week. a good distance between not enough and too much) which is 329 lbs.
when put to paper, 20 pounds in a month is, i think, great. i know everyone says “oh the first 10-12 pounds comes off so easily!” but not from where i’m standing. i have been working for those 20 pounds.
speaking of working, let’s dig into that piece of proverbial pie i teased earlier.
i have a work-out routine. which is the first time i’ve said that in,,, probably ever. i know while in school i technically had one in p.e. class but let’s be honest. i did not give it my all and would take any opportunity to skip if i could. now it is just me, alone w/ my dark synthwave music and the pedometer built into pokemon go.
yeah, i could download a real work-out app that would track this stuff for me, but my phone’s memory is full to bursting and listen, i need to walk my buddy and eggs. i’ve got friends on pokemon go that need gifts and it is already built-in w/ this new adventure sync, so might as well use what i have.
so, i work out every monday, wednesday and friday night. i usually leave the house a little before 9pm and try to be back a little after 10pm. just about an hour. in that hour i walk down my street (which is pretty long imo), around the corner to the pokestop at the park, around the park, back down my street and return home. in the beginning i just walked around my street, or just to the stop (which is 0.7km from my front door) but as i’ve built up stamina, i’ve been able to walk all the way around the park. actually my goal for november, is to start walking around the park twice a night, at least once a week.
on average it is about 3,400 steps(or roughly 3.5 kms) and an hour of activity, 3 nights a week. i doesn’t seem like a lot but:
1. it is an hour of cardio every other day that i was not doing before, and 2. additional movement that adds up
i walked a combined 40,881 steps in october 2019 while working out. that is on top of whatever else i did while shopping or playing w/ the kids or what have you.
and i plan to add more. i found a great video on youtube that is all about basic, beginner yoga for curvy people. the instructor talks about doing yoga to your size and abilities and not letting anyone tell you that you can’t do yoga b/c you’re fat. i don’t buy into the idea that yoga can directly help you loose large amounts of weight, but what it will do is help build up muscle in my legs and relieve tension in my back, which will then allow me to walk longer and w/ less pain. after forty minutes or so of fast walking, my knee starts to scream and my back burns. hopefully by adding in this yoga that concentrates on thighs, calves and back, where most big people have issues, it will help me target issue areas, deal w/ them in a low-impact way, then save energy and build up stamina to push myself in other ways.
i also want to eventually start adding weight training into my work-out routine. gods, it still sounds so bougee to say i have a ‘work out routine’, but there you have it.
i’ve also begun to overhaul my eating habits. for breakfast, 6 days a week, i have a protein shake. water and soy milk mixed w/ a plant-based protein powder and an additive of instant coffee. sugar free, dairy free. and awful. i hate them. i’ve tried a few different ones and they are all fucking awful, but i drink them anyway.
i also usually eat a salad or soup for lunch. i’ve been finding a lot of really great salad combinations on top of rediscovering my love of salads. when i first went vegetarian, i was big into salads but eventually, it became easier to buy those premade, frozen veggie-friendly meals. like all that Amys’ food or the MorningStar brand (which still conjures ideas of satan-worshipping vegans, but hey, i can dig it). i’m trying to find pre-paired salad meals. i found this really good asian inspired salad that had friend wonton strips and a wonderful sesame seed sauce. so good. each bag can make 3 lunches for me, so it is great to stretch them out. also did you know that most cans of soup are technically 2 servings? i didn’t.
that was probably my biggest problem w/ food that i’ve addressed: what constitutes an actual serving size?
before last month, i assumed a serving size was what looked right. like in the case of the soup, i assumed if it all fit in a soup bowl, it was 1 serving. 1 can of soup can fit in 1 soup bowl so it would make sense, right? nope. 1 serving of canned soup is actually about half the can or roughly 1 cup of liquid. which doesn’t seem like a lot.
so i’ve stuck to salads. 2 and a half cups of salad is like, i don’t know, 35 cal. so, i can go hog wild, prepare a giant ramen bowl full of salad w/ carrots, onions, a sprinkle of slivered almonds, a splash of lite raspberry vinaigrette, and some sliced, uncured ham and that is lunch, baby!
dinner is pretty untouched, other than i eat on children’s plates now. i heard somewhere from some dietian on a show or something that eat on smaller plates, like children’s plates, helps trick your mind that you are eating more than you actually are. your eyes see a plate full up w/ food rather than eating a little food on a large plate, it is the same amount of “little food” but looks more filling on a little plate. i don’t know if it is true, but i feel like it helps me portion food out better. if a helping of potatoes can’t fit in the little sectioned off children’s plates, it is probably too much potatoes. rip
dessert has been downsized, if i have it at all. 3 thin oreos rather than like, a bowl of cereal. a 1/4 of soy ice cream rather than however much i can pile into a small bowl.
so that is the update: breakfast is a protein shake lunch is soup or salad dinner is served on a child’s plate dessert is 3 thin oreos.
maybe this week i will start keeping a calorie count, just to get an idea of what my average is compared to the 2,000 cal/day suggestion.
ok, so that was already a lot, but i did mention that i had suddenly taken a large left turn when it came to the surgery. my last journal update was all about how i was excited to blind, no walkthrough, speedrun this so i could get cleared for the surgery on like january 1, 2020. well, ha ha, nevermind.
this latest class i went to was enlightening. i mean they all have been so far, for different reasons and in different ways. the first class was about what kind of choices we had. did we want to take mediation? did we want to go to food addicts anonymous? did we want surgery? so this new class i went to on 11.7, was a follow-up to the surgical path.
i was already on the fence about disfiguring my insides. the idea of slicing off 2/3 my stomach rearranging my intestines already sounds horrifyingly frankenstineian to me. it sounds like something midevil doctors would come up w/ while snorting morphine or something. but, i was assured that it was the best option, that it was incredibly safe, it was done all the time, it had great success, etc.
i allowed myself to be talked into it. i relented and bought into the dream they were spinning for me.
not after this class. the amount of insanity that is involved, even beyond, again, the whole cutting off and throwing away 2/3 of your stomach, there is some buck wild rules you have to abide after the surgery. i wrote them down (which i was the only one that did. in a class of 9-10 people, i was the only person taking notes and the only person horrified by what i was hearing):
- lose hair first 3-9 months (me, a person w/ thin hair: oh yikes) - will need to take as many as 12 vitamins a day (me, a person that hates taking any medication) - will not be able to take any medication other than liquid/pills will pass thru tiny stomach too fast to be effective (me, a person that hates liquid medication w/ a passion), only tylenol allowed; all medication from doctors must be liquid or chewable - 70% of patients need a follow-up surgery (WHAT) - no smoking (that’s fine) no alcohol (hang on....) after surgery. ever - ideal meals after surgery: 60-100g protein, 40-80g produce, no carbs, no sugar (wait...) - eat a meal every 4 hr.s or so (that seems like overkill) - no carbonated drinks, no drinks w/ sugar/cal (but i love my fizzy drinks :c this is bullshit) - chew each bite 20-30 times, every meal should last a half hour (that’s normal for me anyway, i’m a slow eater but idk how i’m supposed to chew soup 20-30 times) - 30 min.s of activity/day (got that covered, chief) - go to support groups (no thanks, don’t wanna listen to other ppl complain and the idea of being open to other ppl,,, in real life, where they can see me? absolutely not, how dare you) - 64oz of liquid/day (is that not normal? i already drink that much, if not more) - only able to drink a shotglass amount of liquid at a time or risk vomiting (WAIT) - drink every 15 min.s, possibly even during the night (HANG ON) - no drinks w/ meals, stop drinking about 30 min.s before meal and don’t resume until 30 min.s after meal otherwise it will wash food away too quickly to be absorbed by tiny stomach (HOLD THE HECKIN’ PHONE)
at w/ that, the instructor ended the class b/c there were no questions. i was in shock. all i wanted to do was be like those tik tok kids that recreate meme images but i wanted to become the living embodiment of this gif:
literally, i looked over at my mom, who was sipping on a soda and scrolling through facebook for most of the class and went “nevermind, i don’t want surgery”.
i think she thought i was joking. she laughed and waved it off, but the... the existential dread i felt in that moment. this,,,, this was what old howard was shooting for when he wrote about all that cosmic horror. this feeling that i was the only one seeing the insanity in that classroom.... i was the only one that realized that it was madness. how would a person drink 64oz od liquid a day, broken down into 1oz at a time, but not w/n an hour of eating and also having to eat every four hours. that means you’d have to somehow shove 64oz, broken down to 4oz an hour, for 3 hours, then not drink anything for an hour, over only 16 hours. you couldn’t drink anything for 4 of those hours while you eat your tiny baby meals for your tiny baby stomach. i’m not great at math but it doesn’t seem physically possible to me and yet everyone in the class were just nodding their heads like “yes, of course old chap. perfectly reasonable.”
i’d rather continue to starve myself, and work-out. theoretically, if i continue to lose about 20 pounds a month, i will lose my goal weight by may 2020. sure it would be faster w/ surgery. it might be technically easier w/ surgery but everything in my mind tells me that the surgery is wrong. that it isn’t sustainable. i don’t want this surgery and i certainly don’t want the second stage of this surgery 10 yr.s down the road. if you think cutting 2/3 of your stomach out is upsetting, the image of the second step surgery in which they take that rough banana shape of a stomach and stretch it out into what is effectively, A STRAW.
A STRAW.
and once more: A STRAW!!
i could get behind having a banana-shaped stomach, but a straw in which the food literally just,,, falls through you is grotesque.
gonna be a big, fatty NOPE from me, chief. hard pass.

For two months I have not had a good sleep, for every time I sleep a nightmare awaits. Every nightmare ends with my death. These dreams fall into two types, “realistic” and “hyper realistic”.
To cover how they are similar, as the name suggests are realistic. No flower pot breaking but instead of pottery fragments they are petals here. All the senses work and everything plays by the rule. But of course the brain might get the weight of something wrong, and it doesn’t really know what the sensation or pain levels of having an arm ripped off by a horse so it guesstimates.
For “realistic” just because it is realistic doesn’t mean it actually is. The best way to describe this type is as a TV show. There might be an unreal element, like a dinosaur, but it still is grounded. It has continuity, things don’t just change or pop into existence, and time flows like normal but can jump between “scenes”.
“Hyper realistic” on the other hand is exactly like life. Most of these dreams start by waking up and generally aren’t long due to time flowing at a 1:1 ratio. Some examples of this type are:
Waking up to an immense pain in my stomach, open my eyes to find I am impaled on a spike. I can’t feel my legs and every movement is torture anyway. I lay there getting colder and colder.
Wake up and instantly there is a hand on my head, holding it still as a knife rips my throat. Choking and coughing, gasping for air before everything fades to black.
Wake up, do hygiene stuff, eat some toast, do the dishes, vacuum the house, and spend about an hour browsing the internet, when suddenly a guy with a shotgun throws open my door and demands where my valuables are. When I told him to find them himself he shoots me in the head.
Wake up to find it is storming, deafening and blinding crack of thunder/lightning. The pine tree near my bedroom comes crashing down, crushing me, leaving me screaming for help, slowly dying as the rain continues to pelt me. (When I actually woke up to find it storming I actually got up so fast that I ended up passing out and falling on the floor)
And then the last sleep. Wake up to find someone trying to take my rock away from me, and once they take it, they bash my head in with it..
I am no stranger to death dreams. Normally they just leave me with a sour taste in my mouth and leave me with a bad mood, but these.. leave me terrified. I wake up startled with my heart racing, sometimes screaming, sometimes I feel like someone is in my room and I try to calm my breathing (and fail horribly) and pretend to be still sleeping in hopes they will leave me alone.
The effects of this started fairly early with feeling even more ragged and worn. This progressed to my chest hurting longer and longer between attempts of sleep. About two weeks ago the sleep deficit caught up with me; it feel like I haven’t slept for a couple of days. My entire body aches, random sharp pains in my heart area, and doing anything, including sitting, is super taxing. Of course there is also the mental side... the fire is getting real low and the Dark Thoughts are getting real close. Plus being awake so much includes night where the loneliness is stronger.. which is weird because I am still talk to the exact same number of people, zero, day or night. I guess during the day there is a feeling that I could maybe find someone to talk to if I really needed it.
It feels like I am constantly crying, but without tears.
Then there is that last nightmare. An item that used to bring me comfort now... it is like when you get sick a few hours after eating lunch and for awhile whatever that lunch was kind of turns your stomach at just the thought, well this is like that breakfast. You are 90% sure it had nothing to do with you getting sick, but you still eye that food with suspicion for awhile. It is silly and I hope it passes soon.
Speaking of things passing, I need this whole thing to pass. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out. Hoping writing this will somehow help put a stop to it. Going to just continue with random thoughts and stuff just because; it can’t hurt, right?
Replayed a bit of Mario Odyssey recently. It took me a long time in my playthrough to really experiment with what Mario could do, so returning to it with this new knowledge (and after watching some speedruns) has been fun.
I don’t really have a desire to travel. Like it would be cool to see a mountain or the ocean or different regions of the world, but like there is zero will to actually go. There are pictures and videos; the extra stuff these can’t provide isn’t worth the effort. ...But if someone I loved wanted to go? My bag is fucking packed. I don’t know what it is about it, but something about the idea makes me go from zero to LETS DO THIS! Meh to YEAH! Maybe it is thought of see the place through their eyes and experiencing it together slams the scales so hard the cons are catapulted away.
Been thinking a bit about the story I tried writing when I foolishly thought I could write, and, gosh, it was so bad.... but I do still do like the villain’s origin.
I want to keep going with these random stuff, but I was up and down a few times while typing this and my heart is a very unhappy camper right now, so just going to go stay down for awhile. Maybe I’ll do some more after observing if this little bit helps in any way.
