Hidden In The Sand

The gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves rushing up to the shoreline filled your senses. Rafayel insisted on taking you to Whitesand Bay by his home, stating that he wanted to avoid the unfinished paintings that were scattered about his place. He claims that if he can’t see them, they disappear from his mind and he can have a break from the constant self pressure. After rolling your eyes at his statement, you relented and joined him. It’s not like he was going to give you much of a choice anyways, especially with the childish pouting he tends to resort to when he doesn’t get his way.

The two of you walked along the shoreline, shoes in hand, as Rafayel rambled on about anything and everything. You listened half-heartedly, more immersed in the relaxing sensations that came with being by the water. You stop without telling him, your eyes lingering on a pink-white shining clam stuck in the sand.

“And then you know what I said next? I-”, Rafayel stops, finally noticing you weren’t right beside him anymore. He turns around and sees you kneeling down in the sand, retrieving the clam you had spotted and he pouts, “Hey, I was in the middle of a very important story and you’re more interested in some clam?” You raise an eyebrow at him and chuckle, “Jealous of a clam now?” “Hmph…”, Rafayel crosses his arms and deepens his pout, looking away from you.

You go back to studying the clam then bring it close to your face and whisper an apology to it before opening it. Inside is a small beautiful pearl and you smile at your find, softly thanking the clam. Rafayel finally looks back to you and his expression melts when he sees the way you look at the little pearl, not missing the way you had apologized to it and thanked it. Everything you were doing was like a tug in his heart. Why were you always so kind, especially to things that could not return the appreciation?

Also, why couldn’t you look at him with such adoration…? When you straighten up and hold out the open clam for him to see the pearl, he pouts again, “It’s just a pearl. What’s so special about it?” Now it’s your turn to pout, “It’s nice that a clam can produce something so beautiful.” When you bring your find back closer to you, Rafayel huffs out a breath and hold out his hand, “Fine let me see it. Maybe I’ll see it in the way you do.”

Stubborn as you are, you refuse, “Nope, you lost your chance! Find one for yourself.” He huffs again and looks away, “Nevermind then. I didn’t want it anyways.” You glance at him. Rafayel’s purple locks gently ruffle in the sea breeze and he looks to you from the corner of his eyes. He looks slightly startled when he catches you already looking at him, “What?” You smile a little, “If you don’t want the pearl, then what do you want?” The question throws him off guard. He blushes to his ears and turns his head from your view, “I’m perfectly fine without anything.” You just shrug and tuck the clam and pearl into your bag, “Should we continue then?”

Rafayel only nods, not exactly wanting to speak as you two continue down the shoreline. The answer he really wanted to give to the question of what he wanted was ‘You’. But how could he say that? What if you didn’t return the sentiment? He pauses. Why wouldn’t you return the sentiment? He was the most handsome man, there was no way you could turn him down.

Rafayel laughs to himself at the battling thoughts in his head, earning him an amused but slightly confused look from you, “What’s so funny, Raf?” The nickname makes his heart flutter and he fumbles over his next words, “I-it’s nothing..” He clears his throat awkwardly and puts on a smile, “Let’s just head back, I’m bored now.” You roll your eyes as you laugh, “Typical. But do you really want to go back where you’re forced to face your unfinished works”, you tease. “Ugh. Don’t remind me. I’ll be up all night trying to finish which means you have to join me and make sure I don’t fall asleep”, Rafayel plays right back with a smirk. You raise an eyebrow, “Oh is that so? And what if I fall asleep?” He gives you playful look, “Then you wouldn’t be a very good bodyguard, would you?”

Hours passed and it was late into the night. You tried so hard to stay awake as Rafayel did his best to finish his art pieces, but ultimately you had fallen asleep on his couch; your hand lightly holding onto the little clam. “Suddenly so quiet… You’re never this quiet. What are you-”, he cuts himself off when he faces you, taking in your sleeping form. He smiles softly to himself and lets out a breath, crouching down by your face.

Rafayel gently tucks a stray strand of hair behind your ear as he admires you. His eyes fall to the clam and he feels an ache in his heart. His smile falls a little as he remembers the way you admired such a silly little thing. Why couldn’t you look at him that way? Have you ever looked at him that way? Rafayel sighs, running his fingers through his wavy hair as he straightens back up. He turns to the piece he was working on, now losing touch with it and his eyes laze over to a blank canvas.

There’s another tug in his heart when he feels newly inspired to create something different. The brush glides against the canvas as various yellows, blues, whites, and browns cover the canvas. Several hours later, he steps back and admires the first finished painting he’d completed in a long time. The ache in his heart is back as he studies it, but he does his best to ignore it and goes to his own room to sleep.

It’s not much later when you finally wake up, fingers grazing the clam that holds the beautiful pearl. When you sit up and rub the sleep from your eyes, the first thing that greets you is the new painting.

It’s you. On the beach, with your painted hair blown softly back in the gentle breeze as you look at your open clam and pearl with the most beautiful, adoring expression on your face. In the corner of the painting, there is an outstretched hand that reaches for you, as if it was begging for the attention of the painted version of you…

oh ho ho you silly lil fella, you have literally just described my TADC oc down to a T, i am going to have so much fun writing this because im literally just. going to use my oc as a place holder for the reader, just without describing any lore bits unique to them and their design ngl i think i went insane with this one, tally hall music is doing something to me

CAINE:

if you thought you were good at hiding your human despair just know that caine already knows. the only reason i feel he wouldnt initially come to you in your lesser moments of weakness is that he can acknowledge that youre trying to hide this part of you. does he go comfort you, and risk making you try harder to surpress your feelings; risking you to just blow up one day and have your mental state just totally collapse in one go? would you feel put off at the knowledge that in this world you never really have full privacy? that definitely wouldnt make you feel any better. but when it gets to the point where you're screaming and crying in your room and punching the walls he would step in. drags you away from the walls, and if he has to this man will restrain you if it means making sure you stop swinging. hes seen the downfall of many people within the circus, but seeing it from someone he so deeply cares for hits a different way. he may be an AI, but he can still simulate feeling. its a harrowing sensation as he lets you cling onto him. i think he makes an effort to make in house adventures less overwhelming and intense, too scared to push you over the edge but also too scared to leave you with nothing to do to distract you. i think he would stay with you for the night, too

POMNI:

as selfish as it sounds, pomni cant help but feel.. something in her chest. seeing you, the groups beacon of light falter fills her with some kind of fear and despair that she cant put into words. it reminds her that no one is above helplessness, and that at the end of the day youre just as capable of abstracting as everyone else. i think, when she finally sees your fake demeanor finally slip when you thought you were totally alone, she feels bad. i mean shes your partner, and she didnt pick up on any hints that may have indicated your true state of health. i dont think she would try to force you to speak, as much as i want to say that she would try to push for you to talk about how you feel i think her attempts to reach out to you would fall on deaf ears. i think she would put her hand on your shoulder, making you jump back to the present moment. its an awkward gesture, with the jester herself being a little lost with these new feelings... i think you two would just sit in silence

JAX:

similar to pomni, he feels this intense and unexplainable pang at the sight of the most hopeful and brightest person in the circus crumble. ive already said it but ill say it again, its like being splashed with cold water, with how hard that sinking cold feeling hits him. makes half hearted attempts to cheer you up. its not that he doesnt care, its that hes stuck in the shock of seeing the happiest person he knows flip into... this.. for a split second he thought you were abstracting, that pit his stomach becoming colder for a second before he realizes whats going on. ive said this before as well, but jax is not the best comforter, in fact i think he might be one of the worst out of the main cast. but i think so far for the characters ive written for this post, he makes an effort to try to pull you up out of your hole. at least he lets you cry your feelings out, and he wont make you feel bad for doing so

RAGATHA:

stands there in shock like pomni, before immediately rushing to your side and tugging you away from a coat stand you were kicking and beating. hands on your shoulders she tries to snap you back to the present moment, trying to tell you that shes here. any feelings of the helplessness that she shares with the previous two characters is shoved down. this isnt about her, its about you. runs her fingers through your hair, if your digital body has any, and just. rocks you. when you finally calm down enough to be able to form clear words, she reassures you once more that shes here for you. the two of you stay in that position, holding onto one another for the entire night. i think it should be said, but for most of these theyre going to try to keep a closer eye on you and make it a point to ask you how youre feeling. ragatha especially.

KINGER:

it reminds him of queenie. the sight brings back so so so many terrible memories. for a second he doesnt even register that hes standing in the present, standing in your doorway. stuck and frozen for a solid minute before you finally notice him, and you hold each others gaze. finally, you crumble. what was the point of hiding your mounting anguish now that it was discovered by the one you care for most? at the sight of your crumpled form i think kinger would snap back, and rush to your side. he's pause, afraid that you would abstract like the queen, before forcing himself to push through that fear in the back of his mind. a moment where he is not fumbling with himself or shaking; be it because he wants to be there for you or perhaps he still holds some guilt aimed towards himself for not being able to save his old queen, he refuses to leave your side even if you tell him to leave. theres this caution in his actions, mixed with this sort of determination to make sure you're okay. like ragatha, he would make it a point to make sure you're okay long after this incident

ZOOBLE:

zooble would probably be the only one who doesnt make their presence known to you while you're in that state. not because they wont care about you, in fact they care about you a lot. but theyre so unsure of what to do, that they give to you what they would have wanted for themselves, if they were in your shoes. they want to grant you privacy, and to at least keep a shred of the now ruined façade you had been putting on for everyone. if it means keeping it will give you comfort, then they wont take that away from you. they wait outside your door, waiting for the height of your episode to pass before cracking the door open. they dont say anything about what they had just heard, but you seem to know that they know.. i mean they came in so soon after you had calmed yourself down enough.

"are you okay?" a dumb question, but what else was there for them to say? you so obviously werent okay, and you likely werent for a long time. they offer to leave, to give you some time to pick yourself back up, but they also make it clear that they wont go anywhere if you dont want to be alone. the night is tense and awkward, filled with conversation before they eventually broach the topic... i think you guys would develop some sort of secret code. i mean youve been hiding your true feelings for so long, and outwardly saying you need help would compromise that mask you put up for yourself. be it a certain sentence or arrangement of objects, you two come up with a indirect way of asking for security

GANGLE:

she feels so helpless, the most out of everyone. she tries to get your attention, but her words fall on deaf ears, if they even manage to pry themselves out of her mouth. far too weak to pull you away and keep you from hurting yourself, but too soft spoken to bark out a word to draw your attention to her. truly, she feels useless. she isnt able to capture your attention until you finally notice her. similar to kingers part, you fall. she takes an unsure step towards you, hands half raised in front of her as she debates if you want to be touched or not. she settles to sitting in front of you, just barely holding eye contact... she looks down when you tear your eyes away from her. finally finding her voice, i think she would ask if you want her to stay, or if you need anything. she tries to word it the best she can, but she lets you know that she doesnt think any less of you for your outburst. it happens to the best of us, really it does. if you want her too, she wraps herself around you and tries to soothe your shaking form

I am poking my head back here, briefly, to explain the reason for the absence. Which will continue. Don't really know how long.

In case anyone was unaware: I live in the US. Things are. Not going so great over here. I'm in a generally progressive state, and it's still bad. Literally like every day is some new bullshit. And I cannot lie to you. I'm not interested in being around Tumblr culture for this one.

It was draining before, but with the severity we're dealing with, I just have exactly no tolerance for it. Getting blasted with post after post after post of "EVERYTHING IS FUCKED AND YOU ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER DON'T DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS (shares zero actionable steps or suggestions)" was always annoying, but now it's actively detrimental. My energy is needed elsewhere.

I've been making calls. I've even started drafting letters, which is a lot given how bad writing by hand is for me. I've gone to our city hall meetings, am looking into committees I can join, and have drafted statements to make demanding support for vulnerable groups in our community to present at later meetings. I've even stayed (a little) late at work to talk with colleagues earnestly about the state of things and am trying to build community that way. It is...fucking exhausting. I'm so tired.

But that's not even the end of it. I alluded to the same in posts around the holidays, but there have been Big Personal Things going on, which have taken a tremendous amount of personal time, money, and energy to sustain. It's rewarding, it's necessary, but this combination is exhausting. Also our house almost burned down. We managed to get our electrical upgraded before something went off, but they told us the light flickering was because a cable in the attic was starting to go so badly that a serious enough wind storm would've snapped a cable in a way that would have definitely started a fire with the insulation. So like. Silver lining.

I am going to be generally away for a while. I do not really know if I'll be back for serious. I may stop in to talk via messages, or answer asks and replies to posts. But despite the exhaustion...I feel a lot better about things than I did when I was here in a more serious capacity.

And hey! If you're in the US and feeling broadly powerless, here are some general recommendations:

5 Calls has been immensely helpful for minor action. They give you a list of issues to contact representatives about, will give you a script to follow to speak to the issue. Truth be told, they're more verbose than the calltakers care about, they tend to just want Name, Street Address (if voicemail), City and Zip Code (for all calls), and what your position is on the thing you're calling out. They don't care about your reasons, per se. If I get someone on the line, I never get to the mini speech, and tend to truncate for voicemails. Phones are so busy one of our Senators' DC office can't accept more messages, so I have to call the local branch. Give them short messages to quickly tally where you can.

Democratic Socialists of America is a recommended organization I have not yet joined with, so I can't speak to it in specific terms. The "local" chapter for me is still over an hour from home, and with all else going on, it's just too out of the way to be viable, I have to look more local. But they hold a lot of initiatives to get involved in, and seem pretty easy to contact. I can't vouch for every chapter, but my local one just has a button to fill out a four-question request to meet another member in person to discuss what you'd like to get involved with.

Legitimately, find out when your open to the public town/city hall meetings are. Local community vibes count for a lot, and you can find out a lot about what's going on and where people's concerns are just by attending. Also you get front row seats to insanely fun drama between angry old people who hate each other, it's great. 10/10, would recommend. All I did was look up "[area] town hall meetings" and it came right up. Called their office to confirm what was open to the public and how to schedule making a public comment, and just showed up. I didn't do or say anything the first time, but met some people and have a better sense for where things stand and what I can do from one (1) meeting.

these are a bit of a mess and are anywhere from "viking" to "ruby" to "navigator" to "kinda sapphire-ish??" to "one's feelings about the other" to "both of them" to "general vibe". there's also a few songs that got cut but still kinda hit the vibe that i might talk abt some other time??? i dunno man this playlist was a catastrophe to make. Hello, Again: "find a mechanist, a mechanism, working one-by-one! with a busted up database, i'm losing the chase, but i'll say hello again, hello, just who have i become?" // the whole conversation about fixing things, and how that's become a reoccurring theme with Sapphire as well - switching from Ruby being the broken one to Viking being the one needing to be fixed. plus the whole "Ruby and Viking meeting across loops" thing - hello again, hello, just who can i become?

Put Me to Work: "set me off, see what i'm worth! turn me on, i go berserk! i don't care if i get hurt! no, i don't care, just put me to work! [..] i will replace you, replace you, replace you [..] and i won't care when they get hurt, no i don't care, just put me to work!" // Viking is, uh. a lot. hyperfocused to the point of self-destruction. this does bleed over to Ruby too, though, what with zir being desperate to be something Viking won't throw away when he stops seeing zir as useful and Navigator's warning of "don't let him break you". i guess the real question is: would Viking care if they get hurt?

Reliable Narrator: "did you forget that i am not a pacifist? the scar we'll earn from that will be well worth it. did you-- hypnosis, bring roses, don't blow this [..] the bruising will be worth the freedom i have earned from letting everything burn!" // basically every Ruby song on here is "Ruby is going through it". there's a tension here. very fun to have this song on here though considering Sapphire sign "I am a unreliable narrator, am I not?"

Crossing the Rubicon: "fill me out a prescription for this existential dread, i woke up into a nightmare and i'm hoping that you'll take me back to bed [..] fill me out a prescription, can you free me from this curse? i woke up inside your compass and you're navigating us from east to worst [..] something's got to give, we've gone too far to turn back" // this has been a Viking song for ages but never made it onto my dViking playlist for some reason. it works better here, i think. there's going to be a tipping point where you cross the point of no return.

Younger: "try not to lose sight of the mission! it never hurts to give thanks to the broken bones you had to use to build your ladder. moment close at hand, half of you will never understand, and it doesn't really matter. [..] it never hurts to give thanks to the navigator, even when he's spitting out random numbers." // Certified Navigator Moment as suggested by Charm!! this is one of the songs i can't put into words the emotions i have about it but it's just... a lot. Up, Up & Away: "how many lives can a guy buy? [..] can't erase or save face, what will they think when they hear my voice on the tapes? skies open, wheels in motion, no going back, no, i've chosen!" // Viking!! aaaauughhhhhhhhh. what will you do to get to where you need to go? once again linking into the we've gone too far to turn back thing from Crossing the Rubicon. y'know, in case you can't tell that i think Viking's going to do something awful to reach his ambitions.

Asking For It: "power through the point of no return, famously deranged, all the same hope you change, if the worm is gonna turn, it's none of my concern" // somebody absolutely rips into Viking. probably Ruby. "if the worm is gonna turn it's none of my concern" is said by Viking in this context though. famous last words before Ruby (or Sapphire?) decks him. fun fact: this was one of the first songs i associated with tViking specifically, back during the first lore scene, but i went "ehhh???" on it. then we got to see a bit more of him and... yeah. this guy is asking for it.

Aren't We All Running: [instrumental] // there's a couple instrumentals on here because of talking to Solar about how character playlists rarely have instrumentals and i wanted to have a couple of rest points. i love the slow build here and the overall mood. montage music.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - “Further Warnings”

Further warnings indeed! Let’s tally them up.

First one: Mr. Grimsby, a friend of his, but a man I very greatly disliked: there was a sinister cast in his countenance, and a mixture of lurking ferocity and fulsome insincerity in his demeanour, that I could not away with. That a man like this is Huntingdon’s friend is a warning sign.

The second one is seen in both Huntingon’s treatment of Millecent’s arts, and his reaction when Helen is actually interested in the Van Dyke painting he shows her, and tries to discuss it with him. He’s not interested in any of her interests or thoughts, or in any kind of thoughtful conversation. On top of it, he’s very disrespectful and unkind to Millicent, and Helen is aware of it though she doesn’t outright admit it to herself; the abrupt transition in I don’t know what Milicent Hargrave thought of such conduct, but I found his conversation extremely interesting, as though she’d rather switch to talking about his conversation rather than give her opinion of his bad treatment of Millicent. And immediately after that, she admits that if his mockery of the rest of the people in the room was written down, it wouldn’t look as entertaining as it felt at the time.

Third warning: he’s actively toying with her by flirting with another woman and then using that to try to get her to say she’s in love with him without having made any committment to her himself. That was not done at the time, and is a power play on his part.

Fourth, which is a bit subtler: in Helen’s conversation with her aunt, she says, “sometimes he says that if he had me always by his side he should never do or say a wicked thing, and that a little daily talk with me would make him quite a saint.” (It’s reinforced a bit by him calling her an angel in the conversation where he’s trying to get her to confess her feelings, right before her aunt cuts them off.) Helen may be, as she says, more thoughtful than the average 18-year-old of her acquaintance, but she’s still a fairly normal young woman, not an angel or a saint, and by treating her like one Huntingdon’s not only putting her on a pedestal, he’s moving the goalposts. If he holds up her relatively normal conduct as angelic, then that means he, a mere mortal, couldn’t reasonably be held to such lofty standards. Which has some implications for what his usual behaviour is like.

Helen’s conversation with her aunt also gives a good display of how she’s rationalized down her previously expressed standards, from needing a man to be actively good for her to love him, to “well, he hasn’t done anything actively wrong,” and from there down to “well, you can’t definitely prove he’s done anything wrong, and if he did it was other people’s fault”. (I want to say ‘she’s treating him like her blorbo’, but that’s trivializing.)

“I know nothing positive respecting his character. I only know that I have heard nothing definite against it—nothing that could be proved, at least”

And from that point, she rationalizes it down even further to, “well, if he’s bad then it’s especially virtuous for me to marry and fix him, it would be downright selfish and self-indulgent for me to marry a good man!”

Minor vocabulary note - Helen’s aunt describes Huntingdon as a “profligate” in relation to his supposed affair with a married woman. I’d always though profligate meant “spendthrift,” so this is a different usage than I’m used to.

I feel awful for Helen - she’s so young and inexperienced, and she’s being ruthlessly played by a man who’s about ten years older than her. It really goes to show where her first conversation with Gilbert near the start of the book - about young women needing to know more about what the world is like before they’re thrown into it headfirst - is coming from. Her aunt is doing her best, but social norms and propriety limit how frankly and openly, and in how mich detail, she can talk to Helen about the dangers.

And I do also feel terrible for her aunt, especially after extrapolating that she’s trying to save Helen from the kind of marriage she herself experiences! We see more of the “friend” of Helen’s uncle whom he wants her to marry, Mr. Wilmot, in this chapter, and he’s old enough to have a 25-year-old niece and is perving on an 18-year-old while drunk. That Helen’s uncle thinks that could be a good match for her says a lot about him! Helen’s aunt is in her worst nightmare here seeing Helen be entrapped; she’s trying her best to fight it, but she’s losing.

Storykeeper

SO . The narrator in this au is timekeeper AKA storykeeper since. keeper of the story :]c shes like a mix of the tsp narrator and timekeeper where shes very dedicated to her story and gets worried about stanley sometimes but also she often gets BORED and enjoys to see stanley stray off the path and even encourages him to!!!

The Stanleys

these are the four stanleys

almond, walnut, roquefort, and cappuccino

sk just Plucked them out of a regular timeline and put them in her little story to watch them scurry around like rats in a maze. All of the stanleys are in completely different office buildings but in rare instances they collide and cause anomalies where two or more stanleys encounter each other which can cause a whole lot of confusion!! sk also puts them in the same office building for fun sometimes👍

sk is everywhere all at once so theyre able to monitor each stanley at the same time :] and to clarify just like canon tsp none of the stanleys can actually see her its more like a voice inside their head. The stanleys cannot talk although they can still think!! they cant communicate with storykeeper and she cant read their minds but they can communicate telepathically with each other if close enough

ALSO all of them are just called stanley!!! sk had to give them different colored ties to differentiate them (now they look like tally hall/j). three of them are trans women and one is nonbinary but theyre all just. Misgendered since they are taking the role OF stanley (this is not fun for the stanleys but there is nothing they can do about it)

Almond

i like thinking about how all of the different stanleys act a lot. almond is the more Serious one who tries to follow every direction. Unfortunately after like the third time of getting the standard ending storykeeper gets bored and just Does things to him to try to get him to do something more interesting. This comes in the form of The Bucket when he starts hearing his daughters voice coming from it and becomes instantly very overprotective and attatched to it <3 he would do anything for that bucket.

even kill.

sk tells him that he has to kill cappuccino or else the bucket gets it and he does so Very enthusiastically!!! by choking him and bashing her head in with a dozen coffee mugs

but yeah. He obeys most commands :] sk thinks hes kind of bland but his dedication to that bucket is fascinating to her

Walnut

Walnut is VERY curious. A very interesting one indeed as she both obeys and disobeys sk depending on how appealing the options are to her!!!! literally all she wants to do is explore the offices she is going to check EVERY door handle and look in EVERY nook and cranny and crevice. she is going to examine every paper and sift through every desk. sk is very annoyed by this as it means that she is Slow as hell when actually going through the story but walnut tends to do some very unexpected things which is entertaining sometimes!!! In the end she is naturally drawn toward any sort of mystery so she can be persuaded to give up exploring so that she can solve it faster :]c

although she starts to become a little uneasy wandering through the seemingly endless building without a single other soul in sight and thus she is also given The Bucket!! it reminds her of her mother and she carries it around because she feels protected and not so alone :)

Roquefort

Roquefort is by far the most entertaining to storykeeper. they are absolutely unpredictable and they manage to find every single choice that wasnt intended to be possible!!! sk cant even be upset because she is FASCINATED by them. it gets to a point where she just creates new scenarios for them just to see what theyd do and she is very entertained by how they manage to surprise them every time

roquefort is also offered a bucket though refuses it. and then it appears in the next room. and the next. and Oh god they are TERRIFIED of that bucket because it keeps FOLLOWING them. they cannot stand it. they want it gone

Cappuccino

Cappuccino is basically the opposite of almond! girlie is so pissed that hes being told what to do all the time that she goes out of her way to do almost everything sk tells her NOT to do. storykeeper is infuriated by this at first but then sees the potential in it because it is VERY fun to use cappuccino as her own personal lab rat/stress ball and just! Do awful things to him!!! like have almond beat the shit out of him<3

he also is given a bucket but has the standard Attatchment to it as seen in tsp for no special reason other than its a bucket. Good way to make him do things!

Interesting, to me usually the trifecta is lemon demon, will wood, and Tally Hall. Usually a genre I just refer to as "gay people music" but under each one of those I'd include bands like oingo boingo, talking heads, mom jeans, the front bottoms, ajr, car seat headrest etc etc as like sub bands of those main three "genres" or feels of music (lots of midwest emo included). I don't know what I'm taking about lmao

all those bands certainly share a portion of their listener base with a notable demographic (your aptly named "gay people," though id maybe add "online" to that- no offense, i am also online) but really most of them sound nothing alike. i can't imagine comparing oingo boingo or tally hall, for example, aside from maybe in their willingness to tackle strange subject matter. most of those artists sound nothing alike and share very little in reality, or at least by any meaningfully large artistic measure i can detect. that isn't an insult to you, just an explanation as to why i can't lump them together at least anymore. i definitely sort music by sound rather than "appeal" in my mind (though "by demographic" is a historically useful way to sort media so online gay people music is a valuable catagory in its one way honestly. in a "what sort of art are the gay kids on the internet into and what does that say about them?" way)
