Why do so many people think that "filler" is the devil??? I've seen so many people complain every time there's an episode that's not 100% plot relevant, even if the episode is objectively good.
So many people seem to think that there's nothing of value in those "filler" episodes, which is just simply not true. They can be great for character development, relationship development, world building, etc. But, also just in pure entertainment value. At the end of the day, TV is made to entertain people. Yes, it can be more than that, but it doesn't always have to be. There is just as much value in a silly adventure of the week as there is in a dense, dramatic, plot-filled episode.
#filler#this is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine#filler is freaking fantastic#and i almost hate even using the word filler anymore because it's gained such a negative connotation in recent years#can too much filler be a bad thing?#of course#but it in and of itself is not bad#and it's highly show dependent as well#to see filler done extremely well look no further than cowboy bebop#that show is 95% and is generally considered to be one of the greatest anime of all time#the media landscape is really harsh on filler too#all these limited series and shortened seasons are rutheless to non-plot focused episodes#and while that can be an extremely effective storytelling method#such as shows like andor that have a very tight and focused story#it can also make shows feel too pared back#it makes them lack variety and often the characters and world suffer for it#they tend to be less well rounded because you simply lack the time to explore them properly#plus like i mentioned earlier it's just fun!#do i need to see tech become a pod racer?#no but i had a lot of fun watching it!#sorry for the rant š
#but this is something I'm super passionate about and im sick of seeing people shit all over filler episodes#this was inspired specifically by discussions surrounding the bad batch but it applies to so many shows that ive seen#i just realized that the cowboy bebop tag was supposed to say 95% filler but i had a typo š
#excuse the slightly incoherent nature of this haha#star wars#the bad batch#fandom discourse#media#mini rant

that whole fantasy trope of werewolves and vampires hating each other pisses me off every time. it's like lgbt exclusionism you feel me. like I bet the real ones think it's dumb. they're out there going guys we're all children of the night. in their eyes we're ALL unholy abominations. bet there's posts on darkcreatures.net like vampires and werewolves are actually kissing on the lips rn
#if you've ever wanted a podcast where being a fantasy creature operates as a very clear queer allegory#and also a metaphor for disability and neurodivergence and so much more depending on the episode and creature#I highly recommend

something I find really interesting about hannibalās character is how he uses peopleās expectations and ingrained assumptions to hide himself. no one suspects heās a serial killer because he doesnāt present as one. heās elegant and refined and isnāt cruel to animals. heās highly sophisticated, a polyglot and has a deep admiration for beauty and life. he appreciates saving lives just as much as he appreciates ending them. in fact, this particular aspect of his character is partly why it takes will the entirety of s1 to accept hannibalās true nature. will saw hannibal save abigail and accompany her to the hospital in apĆ©ritif and he also saw hannibal save a manās life by performing emergency surgery and taking over the operation at the end of sorbet.
this moment in particular is interesting because of how itās framed to make hannibal look almost godly from willās point of view:
1) hannibal is positioned immediately higher than will due to being in the ambulance, meaning will is looking up at hannibal, while hannibal is looking down on him
2) hannibal is standing under a bright light as he works to save this guyās life, while will is standing in almost complete darkness
3) the usual orchestral, classical music is playing in the background, emphasising the apparent āholinessā of the act and framing hannibal as some sort of saviour
the impact of this scene is even more potent when considering the context of the rest of the episode, since will has already stated that the ripper is not the type to save people or enact mercy on anyone. his style of murders doesnāt suggest this characteristic whatsoever, and although willās assessment is correct, hannibalās personality and overall demeanour doesnāt match what weād imagine a person like that might look like. I think will is confronted by this as well, because even if hannibalās surgical skill means he matches the ripperās profile (which makes him a valid suspect) his actions contradict willās image of the ripper, while simultaneously affirming it:
itās difficult to reconcile these facets of hannibalās character. itās inherently contradictory and defies our cultural expectations. nonetheless, hannibalās inclination to save people is sometimes more insidious than his murders. he doesnāt save people out of altruism, he does it because he thinks heās superior and enjoys deciding outcomes. he doesnāt view himself as insane, he views himself as god. this is most aptly explored in takiawase, through the acupuncturist/beekeeper killer. here we see a murderer who confesses that she killed a man to quiet his mind, and tells jack that itās beautiful that she managed to protect him and her other patients. this is one side of hannibalās character, the one whoās a doctor and therapist and sees death as a cure from disease, even if the ādiseaseā itself is literally just discourtesy. itās ultimately an act of power.
and yet in this same episode he flips a coin and saves bella on a whim. this of course is framed to others as an act of mercy, however the reality is he took bellaās power away in an act disguised as kindness. once again, he hides in plain sight. this is the other side of his character, and itās just as deadly.
itās still about power.
but we donāt associate acts of mercy with monstrosity. when hannibal comforts abigail in trou normand we question whether heās as bad as we think, because what negative connotations are tied to paternal tenderness? we miss that hannibal is fostering dependency, that he literally looks dead in the eyes as he holds her, and that he blatantly just told us that heās using abigail to manipulate will:
hannibal often does this actually. he either directly says what heās doing or suggests that heās the culprit (often through cannibal puns, as we know) but no one ever interprets him correctly because doing so would contradict the image heās carefully constructed for himself. it would cause too much dissonance.
and whatās fascinating is that on a subtextual level this is largely what the show is about. the story is an exploration of societal roles and the struggle to fit into stiff categorisation and expectations. will parallels hannibal in this regard because heās desperately trying to repress his identity by taking on certain roles. and the audience is lured by this persona the same way the characters are lured by hannibal because will defies our understanding of certain tropes. on a genre level, will assumes the detective archetype, meaning we are primed to think heās inherently good. when we see him say he wants to save people we believe him, even though he often only does so to prove to himself that heās a good person. will is indeed righteous, a characteristic we often view positively, however heās violent, wrathful and actively enjoys murder due to how powerful it makes him feel. heās not dissimilar to hannibal, we just donāt see this straight away because doing so would disrupt our understanding of good and evil.
will hides the same way hannibal does, except will hides from us as well
#ghostie once again goes on a tangent#but itās so !! I really love how the show fucks with everyone#and uses our expectations to do it#even on a narrative/genre level#the key to unveiling it is letting that conditioning and urge to categorise everything go#also wow Iām back to writing meta hello there#nbc hannibal#hannibal#will graham#hannigram#hannibal meta#ghost speaks

i am BEGGING them to stop pretending buck is stupid. please. at this point you are creating a caricature of him.
Buck sometimes plays the part of an oblivious or comedic guy, but it is not as often as people like to make it be, and 99% of the time is to create a comedic moment. a lot of these moments also come from his lack of popular culture knowledge, which can easily be attributed to a sheltered childhood, and not lack of intelligence.
buck IS smart, and i will die on this hill. not only because you have to be in the job they work, but also because weāve seen it! heās shown to have an ever-present curiosity, to read and learn about stuff quick, and to have really quick thinking skills.
heās, also, been on his own since he was really young. he left home at an early age and had no one to back fall on, not really. he depended solely on himself, and he did good. he managed to create a great life for himself way before maddie or his parents were present in his life again (and his parents still have no influence over that, iād argue).
buck has been shown to be in touch with his feelings often. we have not seen him be confused about them ONCE. acting impulsively because of them, yes. but heās a character that has always know how heās felt and has been okay-ish at processing it (exceptional occasions contradicting this notwithstanding).
so. why would it ever make sense for him to now be completely oblivious about his own feelings? make it make sense.
yes. he had yet to realize heās bi. that is NOT because heās stupid, but because heās such an open person that finding someone attractive has not registered in his brain as him being attracted to more than one gender. we know he appreciates beauty (in canon!) and heās shown to not be a prejudiced character, so it completely makes sense for him not to notice anything out of the blue.
the moment he realizes those feelings are not universal, heās quick to process them and figure himself out. because, again, heās a character that is in touch with himself and his feelings, and, please bestie boos, remember this: he is highly emotionally intelligent.
also they should rewatch 705. because that was the episode he had to process his feelings, and guess what? he did! and he reached the conclusion he has feelings for tommy. so he reached out to him again, because he has feelings for him. not for eddie. for tommy.
buck is smart. let him be smart.
also this is reason 1000 why i will always say their version of buddie is 85% fabricated.
Marry me... I'm sorry that was forward... but like I love you and this ask.

Dark!whb King headcanons
speculation for asmodeus and belphegor(I'm writing these two before they come out)
Cw: yandere, murder, drugging/drugs, death, cannibalism, sexual slavery mentions of being sold off, most of this shit is just talking about a black market shcsdgj. This shit is dark dead dove do not eat
Disclaimer: I do not condone anything I write This is purely for fantasy written by adults for adults only!
Belphegor and asmodeus has been fully released here's the update
Links to little asks about people's questions
Question one about Satan's desires
Question two on Mammon
Satan
I don't think we talk about Satan's depression as much as we should have. What I feel like you would think himself as a wrathful monster unable to control his wrath, sometimes he would have depressive episodes where his personality is a completely 180. He's just as angry at himself as he is at everyone else.
The first time you've witnessed this depressive episode is when he accidentally struck you and made you bleed. His whole body starts shaking as he began to break down He tore apart his room and started crying and took weeks for him to calm down.
The reason why his subordinates are okay with him taking out his anger and physically hurting them is because if he doesn't have an outlet he'll take out it on himself.
Satan is dependent on you for his emotional needs. He loves you, and he needs you; please do not leave him.
Satan is definitely holding back a lot of his dark thoughts because he doesn't want to hurt you, and he doesn't know how much longer he can hold back these darker desires. Normally he tells you everything, but he doesn't want to scare you. He wants you to like him.
Leviathan
Leviathan is a budding yandere, He already stalks you. Trying to keep his obsessive thoughts underneath a layer of hatred. That hatred mixing into more obsession. Of course he wants you to love him, but he also wants to be hated by you just as much as he is loved because it gets him on your mind. And that's really all he wants. It doesn't matter if he makes you hate him. As long as you're thinking about him he is okay with that.
Because of his abuse as a child from angels I would not doubt he wouldn't know how to normally show affection.
He has killed another devil for you. And he will gladly do it again. He sends the heads of lower rank devils that you dare show a smile too under the name "You're admirer" isn't he so romantic.
Leviathan only tolerates the kings being around you because chilling one of them or they're subordinates would start a war. So to have you he must use sneakier tactics.
Beelzebub
He has a fantasy where he roofies you at a bar and takes you home with him. Whenever you go to the bathroom thinking that Your drink is safe with him, He stares blankly into the glass, thoughts swirling with mental images of your nice loopy giggly self being laid on his bed.
Angels taste like chicken, humans taste like beef, demons taste like pork. Humans so far is his favorite. Humanoid meat especially humans are delicacy and highly illegal in the Tartaros black market. A delicacy He has been recently craving.
If he ever dies he wants his last meal to be you after he fucks you of course.
Levi gives the bodies of the devils he has killed too Beel to eat.
Beel definitely does drugs He's mostly immune now... He hates that Adderall doesn't affect him the same as the others.
Mammon
Tartaros is home to the rich and the very powerful. They hold grandiose special parties where the wealthy gather. Of course Mammon attends these parties. These demons see you as a pretty little exotic pet unknowing that Mammon is the pet and you are the master. And these same demons frequently talk about how they would buy you at any price, talking about your body as if you are a piece of meat and a prize to be bought and sold. Sadly you are not for sale.
As the demon of greed flaunting is his specialty And he has definitely thought about telling you up and all his gold and jewels to bring you to one of these parties to show you off. As a message saying 'This is something you cannot have.
Mammon knows of the Tartaros Black market and he turns a blind eye, but he will gladly do something if you tell him to. Or if belphie gets off his ass and strong arms him.
Giving him a little more because getting asked for it: Mammon doesn't do shit about the black market because He owns part of it and he practically created it. This man runs his kingdom like a mafia and he is a mob boss. Shady dealings to other kingdoms smuggling goods anything for More money and greater goods.
Lucifer
Has purchased a human corpse from the same black market for scientific purposes he swears up and down.
He slowly corrupting himself He beats himself up over it but at the same time he kind of likes it.
"hey can I cut you open and look at your organs? No? Oh okay..."
Lucifer because of his past as an angel suddenly gets urges to kill you. They have gone down over time since his transformation as a devil but he really shouldn't be getting this hard over thoughts of putting his hands around your neck.
Makes aphrodisiacs as a paid commission for asmodeus. And asks you to test the drugs.
If you ever die he wants to keep your beautiful eyes.
Your blood is a beautiful drug like sweet wine. He's obsessed with the taste
Belphegor
Belphegor and his superpower of a kingdom are the only reason why the Kings actually give a damn about their laws. Nifleheim is a strong powerhouse and a great enemy to those who don't want to make one of them.
However, Belphegor isn't all justice and the law and order in fact far from that. He is the law whatever he wants he can bypass it and everyone will turn a blind eye. If you were ever sold by Mammon to the highest bidder Belphegor would be your buyer.
Grand spectacles of public executions are very popular thing in Nifleheim(Belphie Danganronpa fan)
The real horror is that belphie invest in cryptocurrency and has an NFT/j
Belphie is also completely dependent on you and he will make you stay any way necessary.
Belphie only hasn't cracked down on the others harder as he should is because he doesn't give a fuck what happens in other kingdoms if it is in his own.
Belphie thinks Asmodeus is a disgusting freak. Leviathan is an amateur to him. Satan and belphie would get along pretty well I think they would be FPS partners.
Asmodeus
All of hell's most heinous devils come here because the laws are so lax. You're wondering why this kingdom hasn't fall to complete anarchy... Apparently getting you addicted on sex and then withholding it as a punishment is surprisingly very effective.
Asmodeus would love to have you but hasn't invite you yet because... Well if your kingdom is filled with half trained rabid dogs and you throw a nice fine steak inside.... Yeahhh.
Asmodeus is actually a pretty nice dude, He's very calm, polite and chivalrous. Which makes you wonder how much of that is a mask. Something you'll never know.
Asmodeus has a harem I think that goes without saying. And he talks greatly about adding you to that harem and how you would be his favorite~
It's no secret that I think humans are a very sexualized being in hell. Asmodeus is one of the demons with a huge human kink. Humans in his eyes are still primal animals which is part of their biggest appeal to him.
Asmodeus thinks belphie has a stick up his ass and he needs to loosen the fuck up

I saw a post talking about how thereās a deep mischaracterization of Mk in the fandom specifically about his monkey form and Iām here to dissect it.Ā (WIth doodles!)
Tldr: Will Mk end up hurting his family in season 5 due to his new Monkey form? Most likely no, but it is possible that he indirectly hurts them by not understanding the limits of his power.
First things first letās collect a list of attributes that we know Mk has from past seasons. This will serve as a spine or checklist to see if certain actions are possible. A thing to keep in mind though is the ranking of each attribute as the writers of LMK wrote there are characters as complex and sometimes abandon certain character values if their center value is threatened.Ā
Mkās character value list (in my opinion) is as follows:Ā
-FamilyĀ
-StrengthĀ
-FreedomĀ
-DependabilityĀ
with family and strength being so close to each other, so sometimes strength ends up as Mkās main concern. Of course, all of these end up mixing at times and in the first seasons we see the mixing of these values gets him in troubleĀ
Desiring the freedom of choice over listening to Wukong (Pig Pong Panic). Wanting to be dependable but overestimating his strength (Duplication). Wanting to be strong but forgets his family in the process (shadow play). Eventually, he gets his priorities in check and has ended up sticking to this list for most of seasons 3 and 4.Ā
Now his flaws (in no particular order):Ā
ImpulsivityĀ
ForgetfulnessĀ
StubbornnessĀ
Blind devotionĀ
Heās overcome a lot of these when he was forced to learn them in season 3. His stubbornness to not tell anyone what was happening with the LBD got people hurt. His impulsivity with his actions ended up crashing the ship, and almost sold his family to a goldfish demon.
(Text: Mk's Fault, Good Intentions, Trying mentor)
So heās had to come up with methods of working around that. Mkās blind devotion to Wukong almost got Mei killed, and we see how he changes because of it. At the end of season 3, Mk doesnāt explicitly say that he sees Wukong in a new light but he heavily implies it with the metaphor of a bowl of noodles.Ā
Soā¦ Will Mk go crazy and end up hurting his friends?Ā
I highly doubt it. While I toyed with the idea, Mk is a lot smarter than the fandom usually gives him credit for. He knows Wukong is flawed, and he still trusts in him because he knows Wukong is trying. Mk has faith in Wukongās strength and the fact that Wukong also heavily values family, even if his isolation makes it a lot harder for him to do so. Just rewatch the ending of season 3 where Wukong apologizes to Mk and watch as Mk comes to the realization that Wukong is trying so hard to make up for his past. (They also drive this point home in season 4 with how disappointed Wukong sounds at himself for not finding Mk in the scroll in the season finale.)Ā
(Text: He's flawed and trying, Has to accept harsh reality, Dissociating Coping mechanism)
So what about Mkās impulsivity? I doubt thatād be something that directly harms his friends. Heās worked on his impulsivity by working with others (Redson in season 3 and Meiās planning in season 4) to help fill in the gaps in his plans. In order for his impulsivity to harm others, youād have to break that family value first or raise that value of strength and freedom. Most likely this flaw can manifest in Mk overdoing his Monkey form ā¢Ā and sending a shockwave that accidentally hurts the people around him.Ā Probably manifesting either in training or while having fun with Mei (think about how Mk was in the Bad Weather episode).Ā
Okay, what if Mk is tricked into it like he was in Season 4 (back to the flaw of blind devotion)? Mk has spent every season backstabbed by someone he trusted. We see him snap at Azure after he finds out that he was going to keep Wukong in the scroll. He snaps at Macaque in season 4. Itās safe to say that heās learned, at least partially, to not trust others so blindly. Mk is also supposed to have gotten the āskill of self-reflectionā in āRevenge of the Spider Queenā but his reflecting has mostly just impacted the other flaws.Ā
(Text: Side note, Monkey Mk doesn't have a nose)
But there is one possibility I toy with, bottled up emotions. Mk has extremely big emotions but hates showing any emotion that can be seen as negative. He loves being happy and heās not afraid to show it, but as soon as those emotions turn to doubt, anger, or sadness he bottles them up fast. He knows he can rely on his family, but heās stubborn and thinks that his emotions arenāt worth that hassle. Take the ending of season 3 where Mk states that āhe tries not to think too hardā about his own place in the universe, which could be due to a fear of losing the value of freedom if he has a specific role to play in the universe.
(Text: Guys He's so avoidant, forced to think about his identity, 18-early 20's and Identity crisis)
Itās worsened by the fact that every. other. character. avoids. their. emotions. No other characters in this series are open about their emotions except Tang and Sandy. And from season 3 (and a bit of season 4) we know that Mk doesnāt view Tang in an extremely positive light.
Not exactly negative, but his admiration lies more on the rest of the team. Macaque points this out in season 2 stating in āShadow Playā that Mk should talk out his insecurities, but no one else does that.Ā
That being said Mk isnāt entirely forgetful either. Macaque was a season 1 villain with his betrayal going through season 3. Mkās high value of family, and flaw of blind devotion, make him want to give him a chance as Macaqueās past is connected with Wukongās. HOWEVER, Mk is also stubborn and hasnāt forgiven Macaqueās actions. Thatās why he snaps, plus the fact that Macaque is terrible at direct communication. Like I said before, Mk wonāt directly hurt anyone he cares about, but if his monkey form is highly connected with his emotions (as most magic tends to be) having those bottled-up insecurities might accidentally cause Mk to unleash more power than he means to.
(Text: Normal, Fed up Meter, rage (on jar))
I have no idea where season 5 is going to go, but Iām so excited about the possibilities.Ā
(Text: Terrified of his actions hurting his family. UNSTABLE!!!)
#lmk#lego monkie kid#speck rambles#lmk analysis#lmk mk#monkie kid#lmk qi xiaotian#My analysis isn't perfect but i agree that most of the fandom paints Mk as this dumb overly trusting kid#when hes closer to a painfully optimistic adult who falls on bad coping mechanisms such as naivety and avoidance#He's smart yall. He can learn and adapt faster than most people in the show#He just has big emotions that pass off as childish moments and as a neurodivergent person I can relate too strongly ... anyways

see, the thing about striker being cool in "the harvest moon festival" is that... yeah, we're supposed to think he's cool. because that's what blitzo thinks.
the episode works very, very hard to show us how cool striker is. i mean, look at his introduction shot!
that's badass. no question about it.
and yes, he does proceed to charm the pants off millie and blitzo, with a bit of flirtation and a lot of compliments. He even pulls the same compliment-and-wink move on both of them.
and then he follows it up by doing very badass things. killing that hell pig? badass. going toe-to-toe with blitzo in the pain games? super badass.
and sure, all the while he's relentlessly bullying moxxie- but at this point blitzo had been relentlessly bullying moxxie for 4 episodes straight. this isn't raising any alarm bells. not with us, as the audience who's used to it, and not with blitzo.
because we're supposed to see this through blitzo's eyes. we're supposed to see striker as a cool dude because that's what striker manipulates blitzo into seeing. he lays that charm on thick because he needs no one to suspect him- least of all the 3 assassins who depend on his target for a living and are the most likely to try and stop him.
but this is an act. this is not who striker really is. his facade completely drops when he's found out. He doesn't really think highly of millie or blitzo- he thinks killing millie isn't even worth it, and he calls blitzo a "rodeo clown".
and even his anti-royal creed sounds self serving when he also refers to himself as being above most imps. he literally refers to himself and blitzo as "superior". he's, as blitzo notes in "oops", a supremacist.
but while he mostly breaks after being found out, there are prior clues to his giant ego- like this pose he strikes after winning the rope pulling contest, or the song he sings about, well, winning.
this is actually really the kind of guy i'd expect to have a giant statue of himself with a huge boner at home. how did stolas put it?

Possible Future Payoffs for Charlastor
This post is meant to hopefully raise the spirits of Charlastors. As we all know, Chaggie is supposed to get a "sexy song" in season 2. It's honestly not surprising but I'll be honest. They could show 20-25 minutes of Charlie and Vaggie having the raunchiest, freakish, loudest sex and I would still rather watch another 3 minute Charlastor touch-a-thon similar to episode 7.
Chaggie getting a sexy song or them being all over each other will not convince me that there's chemistry until Vaggie fixes her co-dependency issues. To me, Charlastor has the more natural chemistry and they'll definitely be getting more scenes together too judging by the line, "She's filled with potential I could guide.:
It's clear they'll be spending more time together as mentor and student. Also, since Alastor needs to maintain Charlie's trust, I'm willing to bet that Charlie is the one that Alastor confides in with his Vox falling out story, and maybe even with his human back story as well.
They don't need to be having sex or have a "sexy duet" in order to show they have chemistry/are intimate. Trust can be a very intimate thing too- literally baring their soul to someone, especially to someone who has been described before as Alastor's "mirror".
Charlastor doesn't have to be endgame in order to have a payoff. A payoff can take on many forms. Here's a few good ones I can see happening. Alastor standing up to Eve/Lilith (after Charlie frees him) by saying the only one he has loyalty for is Charlie, before kneeling before Charlie and calling her his Queen!
A different payoff could be a mutual Charlastor hug where Alastor tells Charlie, "You don't know how dear you are to me." One hand is shown cradling the back of Charlie's head, lying his cheek on the crown of her head while his other arm is wrapped around her waist.
Another payoff could even be one brief kiss. Call me delulu but I think one kiss for the fans could actually happen. Picture it being at a time where Chaggie is briefly broken up and there's a moment before a seemingly hopeless battle where Alastor briefly pecks Charlie's lips to bring her out of a worried/depressed rambling and says, "Forgive me, dear. I've always wanted to try that...with you in particular." -cups her cheek- "Even if all seems lost, I've taught you how to properly wield a smile so let's go forth and turn the tides in this battle. Together."
Be as delulu as you want or keep your expectations very low. I kept mine extremely low for season 1, and look how much we feasted in two episodes plus the hug we got in the finale.
I still can't help but get excited for season 2, though, especially if we keep Amir's interview in mind where an interviewer asked him, "Who is the one person Alastor would do anything for?" Amir of course said that he couldn't answer.
Someone on Twitter (will never call it X) replied with, "He can't say because he knows the fans will go nuts." Amir replied with, "Yes." The first people that come to mind would be his mother and Niffty, but Alastor being a momma's boy and him being "charmed" by Niffty are public knowledge so it can't be referring to either of them. If it were one of them, Amir wouldn't be so cryptic. He would just admit it's one of them if it were one of them but I highly doubt it.
It's an answer that would make fans go "nuts". I'm detecting a note of shippiness. I'm willing to bet that the answer is Charlie. I think Alastor really loves Charlie in his own way and he's determined to prove himself as her friend, mentor, confidante, possibly future advisor and as her "steadfast chum hotelier" for reasons that are more complicated than it simply being that it's because he's leashed and following someone else's orders.

Something I really like about the original Lupin III manga (1967-1969), and which was unfortunately lost in the later releases like the aizouban volumes and the english translation localization of Tokyopop, is the way Monkey Punch decides to organize the chapters. Although the manga has arcs/stories of one or two parts, the manga is divided into "Series" in which, depending on these, each chapter shares a common topic.
The versions that can currently be read have the chapters out of order, but there is nothing to worry about, since these stand on their own episodically and in some cases, the chapters that were originally two parts were converted into a single chapter, so you can just jump to any chapter of any series that catches your attention here.
Some examples of these are:
(The following chapter names mentioned here are from the Tokyopop edition which can be fully read on Mangadex)
Rat Clan Series: Set of chapters in which Lupin and his gang face the Rat/Nezumi clan.
ā¢Chapter 69 - āStraight Flushā

so i've been going down several translation holes while giffing kiseki... finding different sources which have their own translations, etc. then trying to choose the words that fit the meaning of the scene im giffing best.
i just wanna talk about two lines in particular that have made me tilt my head and wonder about nuances, so here we go:
the first line/translation i want to mention is from ep9, and is to do with the meaning and intention of the characters/story. it's when chen yi is confronting ai di after he gets out of prison about the time ai di slept with him four years before. i found three different versions of what ai di cuts him off with:
these all contain insanely different meanings in english. i was losing my mind trying to figure out the subtleties of what ai di was saying here, so i reached out to a very helpful speaker of the language who has made kiseki translation posts before, @nikkotinamide , and they said this about it:
and i just got so excited about that...the nuance! the specifics! referring to it as "settling accounts" is likely where the first translation about "the past" comes from, but the other two are closer to the true meaning. however, if you simply went with the revenge line you would miss the complexities that are being suggested in ai di's character.
thinking of that night as a debt he owes to chen yi and has to pay back... as something to be settled - something he isn't even really asking about but more expects chen yi to follow through on... it makes this line so much more poignant to me because it describes his guilt and heartbreak about what happened between them - about what ai di chose to do - in a much more specific and cutting way. ai di expects anger, rejection, and retaliation from chen yi, and tries goading him into reacting in those ways bc he believes he has done something unforgivable (and also that chen yi doesn't (and will never) love him), so he would rather chen yi push him away than risk being that close again.
(un?)luckily for him chen yi is absolutely smitten with him and doesn't let him get away with it. ā„ļø
the second translation i want to focus on is in ep12 & has more to do with words that don't translate exactly into english, but i went on a similar bender trying to decipher it:
specifically the translation of the last two characters: "å å£ (tĆ”ng kĒu)" - the word translated here as "office".
bc outside of youtube i found those characters also translated as "headquarters," "gang," and "hall", which are all, again, wildly different from each other. so my best guess was that it was actually a very specific word that highly depended on the context it was being used in, and that context was being translated generally so that non-speakers in the audience would understand. but i wanted to know what that specific word and context was!
so i reached out to a bestie who did some more digging and she found this:
which IMMEDIATELY made me batshit insane because of course that's what it means; of course it's that specific!!
"office" is too professional for where chen yi lives - it's a car garage; it's their front as an auto shop. but it's also not yiyun's "headquarters" because that's the building with the spa where chen dongyang and his husband operate out of: the true central point of the gang. but because of this other line in episode 3, we know chen yi (and ai di too through association; they're a pair, do not buy separately, etc.) leads a specific division of yiyun gang:
so when chen yi asks ai di in ep12 if he's going to the bar or to "å å£" he's asking if he's coming home to the auto shop: their specific division of the gang, (which we knew all along was what he was talking about in the first place).
(...and this is just me continuing with the meta side of it, not the translations, but i also think this connects to what xiao jie and ai di were both talking about when they brought up chen yi's succession as the leader of yiyun:
because chen yi is currently just a leader of one branch of the gang, and young (25 at the point where cdy retires), so to me it makes sense that older, senior members of the gang - possibly even leaders of other divisions - would want that spot. but chen yi is practically cdy's son so get wrecked guys the gang passes to him. š„°
and that's also why cdy is urging ai di to just come back and be a member again. bc he raised both chen yi and ai di (they are a pair, do not buy seperately) and because chen yi is gonna need ai di to watch his back as he takes over full responsibility. ...im mad we didn't get to see more inter-gang dynamics. that could have been so COOL let me IN.)
anyway those are the two translation bits that have left the biggest impression on me while i've watched and giffed kiseki so far. i just think language is so fucking neat.

Assorted creditor Pantalone x afab!debtor reader headcanons. Episode one
((highly requested))
tags: tsundere!pantalone ; condescending, slightly vulgar villain ; he is a meanie ; toxic relationship ; early stage of relationship ; manipulative Lone ; slight degradation+humiliation ; choking ; slap dynamics (you slap him) ; degrading names (ābitchā) ; pet names (ākittenā) ; sexual themes ; criminal themes ; pantalone has chronic illnesses
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT Madmanās note: I like mean guys and judging by what we know about Pantalone so far (Arlecchinoās voice-line, Lazzo teaser, Wriothesleyās weapon, Pantaloneās artefact) he fits this category perfectly. I see the pattern of a rude boy here. Charming on the outside but once he opens his mouth itās disgusting (hahaha.) He probably likes mocking and lecturing others, thatās for sure vibing in the Lazzo. He also talks a lot (thanks Cholde). As for the toxic assorted au, Ik half of you donāt like reading gentle n sweet Pantalone, but when I see this man I just canāt imagine him being cruel to his lover who accepted him when the Gods did not. I really think he is very soft inside (with a person he trusts). Heās all about equality and fairness so probably he treats people the way they treat him, and if ur nice to him, well Panty acts with equal respect to you back. Thatās for the personality part. Speaking of other aspects, at least you guys get a happy ending. Coz I hate bad endings. Donāt wanna fuck up huge efforts. The angst and struggle was worth it. Come get your man guys. Heās like the mean classmate who bullies you but is secretly in love with you. As for the gentleman part, I wish I could write something more than just him protecting the lady, coz I believe Pantalone to be a big deal of a gentleman who has his standards even though what he does for a living is very questionable. Iām afraid it will be too much information for this post already. I must also mention that he might say a lot of disturbing and condescending things in the beginning. Oh, and to avoid any misconception--i donāt like writing innocent readers. My reader is fierce, chronically exhausted and crazy.
ā£
āYou will be my prize. A perfect fit for a powerful man like me. You have no friends, your parents are far away, the only person to care for you is your grandmother who was, for sure, foolish enough to take a loan from Northland Bank. You are helpless in front of me, and I enjoy seeing that smug smirk disappear from your face once you realise youāre completely at my mercy. All alone, with your life depending on me. And I will, by any means, show you mercy if you are worthy enough.ā
Said Pantalone as your rĆ©sumĆ© was forcefully slapped down on his desk. Your past jobs, experiences and skills ā all in front of him, in his long fingers which are sliding through the pages as if it were an action book.
Your grandmother, indeed, was the only dearest person you had and, unfortunately, in order to save your life (and future) she took the risk of becoming a debtor to the old devilish banker who was by any means an extremely questionable person.
You had a rough path of changing jobs, trying to find the most fitting and well-paid one, however ending up in only worse conditions. A few years passed like this, the workload traumatised you so much that you couldnāt believe two years had passed since you started doing work for a living. Your grandmother was too prideful to retire, but you both knew her money alone could not sustain your happiness.
And thus, you ended up under Pantaloneās sharp gaze. Now, standing up in front of him with an unfazed expression, knowing too well this man just adores chewing on othersā suffering.
āFuck you and your long ass monologuesā, you think but your face remains cold.
The tapping of his fingers suddenly stops. You feel your heart sink, and it makes you wanna vomit.
āWhat was that? The look on your face just a moment agoā, Pantalone takes his glasses off and looks at you sharply. You can feel that heavy presence with your skin alone. The violet charm of his eyes suffocating you. His whole presence does nothing but choke you.
āBeg your pardon?ā You narrow eyes and ask him as politely as possible.
āWere you thinking something a bit ago, dear? Or should I say, were you doubting my professionalism?ā
āShit, he is reading my mind. I have to think about something stupid.ā
āYouāre so untamed and soā¦ wild, Iād sayā, he says as he rises from his desk and approaches closer to you. āBut alas, I canāt discount your value after one mere impression, can I? That would be too unconscionable of me as a businessman.ā
You see him lean to your ear, his body bending cause of how tall he is, and you feel nauseous once he opens his mouth again.
āYour rĆ©sumĆ© is trash, but Iām not a monster everyone thinks I am. I will let you work under me because of how persuasive your grandmother has been. Though, Iāll be watching you, kitten. Perhaps Iāll even put you under my strict supervisionā"
A sharp slap lands on his cheek. That is the moment Pantalone should realise that your pride cannot be underestimated. With his face thrown to the side, he pats his cheek, holding his fingers on the reddened skin.
āā¦at the lowest positionā, he finishes the sentence. āHeh, the audacity of yours.ā
Pantalone grabs your throat, your is suddenly pulled closer. While being choked heartlessly you turn your eyes to him and hold them for a few long deep moments.
āIām not afraid of youā, the words come out of your mouth weakly. āJust let me work for you. I wonāt be plotting anything. Not interested, to be exact.ā He keeps suffocating you, you almost roll your eyes at the back of your head before the banker finally releases you. You slowly fall onto your knees. āHaahā¦ hhaā¦ā
āIād never be mean to a lady. But a particular someone just doesnāt know any manners.ā
He signs the papers quickly, squeezes a used draft in a ball and throws it into the trash bin. The signature he leaves on your zero-hour contract is so lazily made as if the man wanted to deal with you as soon as possible.
āDonāt disappoint me. You wouldnāt like to see me when Iām angry.ā
āThank Godā, you sigh in relief, despite being choked a few seconds ago.
His movements, his body are so quick and flexible, you do not notice how the eyeglasses return to his face.
āYou have a zero hours contract here, but Iāll personally make sure you work not less than six days a week.ā
āJust so you know, I wonāt kill for you. That goes against my principles.ā
Pantalone raises his eyebrows, giving you a bored look.
āI wouldnāt let you have a privelege like that anyway. I have enough henchmen of my own to stain hands with unneccessary violence.ā
When the conversation ends, you go to the bathroom and throw out. This man gives goosebumps, and he is not easy at all.
To your biggest surprise, as a leader Pantalone turns out capable enough. Just seeing him intricately managing his resources and employees makes you admire him at some point. No matter how unattractive his personality, for sure, was, none could not deny the fact that he is a skilful individual. He possess finesse and determination. Though speaking of his other traits, you cannot ignore the fact how suave he is. Women touch him with or without his consent all the time. And youād agree: the man is attractive. Affable demeanour in public, though quite closed in private. āClosedā is an understatement. He is, in fact, incredibly emotionally unavailable.
His ill-favoured personality, hidden under that affable demeanour and polished looks, however, could not prevent you from falling. For him. And you are gradually finding yourself more and more addicted to him. Brushing off these ideas as soon as possible, of course. Occasional touch of your fingers, frequent looks heād give you. You cannot remember the exact moment when Pantalone started showing signs, but you remember well that his glances in your first meaning were anything but interest. As you are a āspecialā debtor with a large sum to owe, Pantalone almost cages you in his main office buildings. To your knowledge, there were a few of them, but out of all people the fate of working with him has fallen onto your shoulder.
There was one day when he scared you.
āYouā¦ killed someone?ā You ask, holding your hand to your chest as you walk into his office to bring some papers. But they are dropped down the moment you see the so-called crime scene. The heavy metallic scent of blood blocks your breathing and you dream of disappearing from this room, however it is too late.
āJust taught a disagreeable debtor a valuable lessonā, Pantalone walks out of the shadows, lighting the cigarette right in his own office.
Your eyes widen at the sight of the blood on his face once he makes himself visible.
āWhat are you doing here? Ah, the job. I almost forgot.ā
A panic attack crashes you sooner than Pantalone inquiries.
āWhy the sour face? Just put the papers here and youāre dismissed.ā
You look down at the body next, and even if!(fat chance) that person is alive, you cannot pull yourself back into the calm state.
āAre you deaf? Put your stuff on my desk,ā the banker commands, wiping the blood off his cheek.
Your vision goes blurry when you see his stained with crimson skin and you feel like fainting.
āI donātā¦ exactly likeā¦ seeing blood, yes.ā You turn away but lose your consciousness the moment after.
When you wake up you find yourself lying in the leather couch, a blanket dropped sloppily over your body. Pantalone is sitting at his desk per usual, working on his papers when he sees you slowly come to senses.
āAlive? Good. Now go back to your duties.ā
You rise from the couch slowly, pulling the blanket down and slightly wobbly proceed to the door.
āY/N.ā Pantalone stops you with his voice.
āWhat nowā¦ā you think. But your expression softens one you hear what he tells you:
āThere is a bottle of water I left for you on the desk. Take it. Iām not exactly eager reviving you after another fainting because your careless ass is dehydratedā, he stops writing with his left hand and says again, this time harsher: āAnd never enter my office announced again.ā
āThank youā, you take the bottle of water the Harbinger offers you. It has a distinct spicy scent from cologne lingering on it. āYour couch reeks of tobacco, by the way.ā
One time, when you save him.
Pantalone storms into the office visibly injured and infuriated. You can see his secretary come up to him, presenting some sort of intel while her hand slips under his sleeve trying to pull his gloves out. You see it all through the small doorway.
āLord Harbinger, you must have had a tough mission, let me release this stress of yoursā¦ā
The other employee of his, a male, presses a wet sponge against his expressionless face. Pantalone, seemingly weak and tired doesnāt respond immediately to the secretary boldly roaming her lustful hands over him but a while after his consciousness makes itself known. He grabs the recently presented papers and slaps the womanās hand with them.
āSirāā
āHave you two no shame? I need privacy. For once, just leave me alone!ā He shouts, uncharacteristically to him. Both the secretary and the lowly subordinate rush out of the room under his strict command.
When the shift ends you can see everyone leave the office, however there has been not a single move from Pantaloneās office since he shut his door. You look on the clock, itās already 9:15 p.m. Why is he not going home? You decide to spy on Pantalone. Soon, as everyone has left the office empty, you raise from your working desk and go to check on your CEO.
āPantalone.ā
You knock, but the response is none.
āPantalone, coming in.ā
You push the door slowly. Even his spicy cologne mixes up with the metallic scent of blood. You walk in the office and feel your heart sink at the sight: the banker is lying on the floor, as if he had fallen from his desk, there are lots of tablets scattered around the floor, and a bottle of wine, shattered, the salty smell filling your nostrils. The ashtray on his desk is full and messy. Everything looks chaotic and Pantalone himself is, for sure, out of character.
He is unconscious as he is lying on the floor. You rush to him, gently placing your hand on his shoulder and start shaking him.
āPANTALONE!!ā
He doesnāt wake up and you have to resort to drastic measures. You slap him. At that, he finally comes to the senses.
āThis is the second time you have slapped me. Are you not afraid of the punishment I might force upon you?ā he asks, groggily putting his body into a sitting position.
āWhy didnāt you go to the doctor?ā
āIām perfectly fine handling some scratch.ā
āJust a scratch? Then, what are the tablets for? I thought they were painkillers.ā
You see as Pantalone examines his own mess, and his expression is calm yet a hint of exhaustion can be spotted.
āCleverā, he says. āI was beaten up, and my muscles obviously hurt.ā
āAnd the wine?ā
āTo relax.ā
āI see.ā
Pantalone eyes you once again, his face extremely pale and tired. āAre you done? You can go home.ā He turns away from you, you donāt know what heās doing but you hear a drawer being pulled and Pantalone let out a short sound similar to groaning. His knuckles turn white as he grips the edge of the desk. You see a used needle roll across the very same deskā¦
āYouāreā¦ youāre diabetic?ā
āAn astitute observationā (silently). āDidnāt I tell you to go home?ā
You analyse him from the top to bottom and deem this person likely not being able to get home himself. You open your eyes to offer taxi, but realise that he has a personal chauffeur. āRight, rich peopleā¦ā
āThatās all? You wonāt even give me a lecture for spotting you in such a vulne-ā Pantaloneās gaze becomes so evil that you rethink over the choice of your wording. āIn such a predicament. I mean, shouldnāt your mighty self cut my tongue in order to prevent me from gossiping about your health concerns?ā
āYouāve been reading far too many detective stories. Iām not soā¦ā he sighs, realising that given the circumstances of his long list of crimes even as a polished businessman he is a perfect match to Meropide. So Pantalone cuts his wording as well. āForget about it.ā
āYou sure will be alright?ā
āWorry of yourself, itās getting quite dark and seems like rain and thunder.ā
Wow. Thatās a gentleman indeed! He wonāt even offer you a lift? You roll your eyes.
āIāll get home just fine. And also, you reek of alcohol. Canāt have the employees think poorly of you.ā
You donāt even know if you are happy with your doing or not, because if you didnāt wake him, heād probably be lying there on the floor until the very morning.
As youāve cleaned your desk and taken your coat on, ready to leave, you see that the raining outside has become even more aggresive.
You walk outside and slip on the first level of stairs. āGreat.ā Before you could dial the number of the taxi, you hear the voice behind you stopping you.
āDonāt need to spend money. Youāre coming with my chauffeur.ā
āNo thanks, I am quite fine being al-ready indebted to you.ā
āThat wonāt need repayment. You saved my life. If I were not woken up in time, and didnāt inject insulin, I would most certainly end up in a coma not long after.ā
āEspecially considering that you drank wineā, you think.
āIf you insist. Look like today Iām but a slave of the weather conditions.ā
Pantalone hums to your response and leads you to the sleek black car. He throws the door open for you and gets onto the back seat with you. Once heās settled and you wait to be dropped off your place you notice the holes on his gloves, revealing already dry blood stained cuts. You are only able to see them properly now, due to your close proximity.
āMay I ask who attacked you?ā
āIt happens quite often so no one is really surprised by nowā, he clears throat. āAn assassination attempt. But Iām fasterā he gives you a warning look, by which you conclude that the killer is no longer alive.
āI see.ā
As youāre dropped off safely to your place, you sneak into your bedroom before your grandma has questions. As you lie in bed under a fuzzy blanket you cannot brush his scent, the mix of spicy cologne with blood, off your mind. The sight of him almost helpless, injecting that insulin like he was on a thin ice, stays carved into your mind as well.

Hi! I came here from your "lore olympus biggest whiff" blog about the finale... I've never read LO but I was always interested in it. However, after reading a few paragraphs of that blog (I didn't read all of it because I didn't want to get too many spoilers), it doesn't seem worth it. Would you recommend it up to a certain chapter? If yes, until which chapter should I read?
Honestly, if you want to read LO, I absolutely highly recommend reading the whole thing, or at least trying to. Not just to give context to the things we're all talking about in these communities, but also because it's about to go behind the Daily Pass wall on August 29th and it'll become even more inconvenient to do so.
I'm personally still a huge sucker for the first season myself because it just has that magic that LO used to have that a lot of us fell in love with in the first place; it still has its flaws, it's definitely the worst of the "Persephone looks like a toddler" era, but the characters feel a lot more real and a lot of the best, most iconic panels from the series come from S1. The first half of S2 also isn't awful, though the art does start to get a bit rough around the edges. It wasn't until the last half of S2 that I personally started to go , "Wait, I don't think Rachel knows what she's doing." That said, I didn't become a full-blown critic of the series until the S2 finale, which is where I firmly believe the comic should have ended (that is, if Rachel had structured the story better to allow for the S2 finale to be the overall series finale).
But you should read as much of it as you can anyways. Even if you can't get through a certain part of the story and decide to DNF, that's fine, but I personally don't want to be the one deciding for folks what they should be reading or how much. I also definitely don't want people forming their opinion of a work like LO entirely through my criticisms of it - the best way for you to form your own opinion, regardless of whether or not it aligns with my own, is to simply read it yourself. I know where I started to lose interest in the series, but you might not feel the same way when you read it yourself. It's definitely happened in the past that people have gone to read LO to "see what all the fuss is about" only to wind up loving it haha and that's great, honestly, I don't want anyone to wind up missing out on something they might like just because of my own opinions about it :' )
Honestly it seems daunting but you can easily read all of LO between today and the 29th, a lot of the earlier S1 episodes are relatively short and the actual pacing of the comic itself throughout the second and third season makes for a very quick reading experience, text bubbles usually aren't too wordy so depending on how fast of a reader you are, you can usually blitz through each episode within 2-3 minutes (that said, I'm also a bit of a faster reader so your reading time may vary). Plus the episode count on the app is also thrown off by several episodes that are purely dedicated to Q&A's, hiatus notices, etc. So it's about a 12-18 hour reading experience give or take, which sounds like a lot, but if you're able to read several chunks of episodes at a time in bursts, it can be done by the time it goes behind DP on the 29th :' )
So yeah ! I do hope you read it for yourself if you're really curious, and if you do, feel free to come back again and tell me about your experience! Did you get through all of it or did you DNF? Did it put any of my own criticisms into better context for you or did you wind up enjoying the series regardless?
Best of luck!! <3

it is interesting to me that sam is judgmental about deanās eating habits, but, from what I remember, heās fairly non-judgmental about his drinking habits in comparison. while sam goes through phases of wanting to eat ācleanerā he never wants to give up alcohol. do you think this indicates that sam is also pretty dependent on alcohol himself but less āshowyā about this than dean who jokes about needing alcohol more often? or is it more that he knows it comes off as insanely hypocritical bc of his demon blood addiction where he went off the rails while dean is still functional even during periods of heavy drinking?
(Does Dean joke around about needing alcohol that often?)
Interesting question. I don't think hypocrisy has ever stopped a character in Supernatural from saying anything tbh. But I also don't think Sam sees anything wrong with the way Dean drinks most of the time. This is a man who tried to give Dean beer for breakfast when he was suicidal (13.05). And I think the reason he was offering Dean breakfast beer is also pretty key to understanding why Sam, for the most part, shuts the fuck up about Dean drinking: He isn't actually good at dealing with Dean not being okay. It scares him. I'll come back to that in a minute.
I think fanon sometimes makes more of Dean's relationship with alcohol than it is. I'm not saying there aren't points in the show where Dean is very obviously shown to have an alcohol problem. I'm not saying his relationship with alcohol is normal (though his relationship with alcohol is pretty normal prior to him going to hell). I am saying I think a chunk of fandom tends to think of Dean as someone who is more or less constantly buzzed for most of the series, and that's just not accurate. After hell, Dean begins drinking to fall asleep. He is binge drinking a significant amount before bed by mid season 5 after the Harvelle's deaths (5.11, 5.16). But it is to fall asleep and it cuts back to a glass or two a night by the beginning of season 6 after a hard fought struggle we get small references to between Dean and Lisa (6.01, 6.06). Dean would be dead on a hunt within a month if he was constantly day drinking, and the show notes to us specifically when Dean is so out of sorts he feels the need to do that (see: 6.06, where Dean drinks just to be able to stand being near Sam, after being assaulted the previous episode while Sam watched and smiled). A glass of whiskey or two before bed becomes Dean's new normal from season 6 onwards. When his drinking ticks up from that in one season or episode to another, there's a deeper problem going on that Dean is struggling through. I only mention this because when I actually think of points where Sam might say something to Dean about an uptick in drinking... it's not going to happen as often as fandom sometimes imagines.
Sam understands Dean's options as far as dealing with nightmares from decades of reality-bending torture are highly limited. Realistically, Dean has zero access to qualified professional support. Suppose Dean took sleeping pills instead of drinking to fall asleep. Would he actually be better off? Would he eventually abuse sleeping pills instead? Would that just put something in close proximity to him that he could even more easily overdose on? Because... Dean also isn't a stranger to suicidal ideation, and Sam is very aware of that, and I wager he gets a hell of a lot more antsy about the thought of Dean having constant access to sleeping pills than he does about Dean drinking a glass of whiskey or two before bed. In the fucked up world they live in, as far as Sam's concerned, Dean's relationship with alcohol is usually "under control" in a relative sense. I think Sam understands Dean's use of alcohol and he accepts it... and he isn't going to get judgy, because Sam isn't good at actually handling Dean not being okay. Dean not being able to cope scares Sam however he might pretend to play Mr. Therapist (see my tag: #bad therapist sam).
If Dean chooses to cope with nightmares and sleep disturbances using alcohol while still being functional during the day, Sam isn't going to say a word. When Dean's drinking gets bad, for example, in season 7 when Dean constantly carries around Bobby's flask, I seem to recollect Sam speaking up about it at least onceāat least in vague terms? But we'll see when I get back into season 7. (All I remember right now is him joking that alcohol is a "vitamin" for Dean in 7.18). I really do think in general, as far as Sam as concerned, as long as Dean's drinking doesn't effect his job performance... it's all good. He generally isn't going to touch it with a ten foot poleānot even to joke.
It is true at the same time that Dean's relationship with food also is and continues to further develop into a coping mechanism. Dean eats when he's grieving or sad and when he wants comfort. Food makes Dean feel safe. However, Dean also eats when he's happy, and Sam's judgments when it comes to Dean's eating usually happen when Dean is happy eating instead of sad eating (or when Sam at least perceives him to be happy eating).
I think the specific connection between Dean's drinking and hell may also play a role here. Sam failed Dean deeply on the hell front and I think he knows it. I won't even mince words: it is Sam's fault that Dean never talks about hell. Dean was opening up between 4.08 and 4.11, but because of Sam's cruel turn in his framing of that traumatic experience, Dean's hell trauma is forever the silent looming thing that no one talks about. Not Sam, not Dean, not anybody. Getting judgy about Dean drinking to fall asleep could easily open cracks in Dean's own self-imposed wall and Sam is smart enough not to scratch at it. Not just for Dean's sake, but for his own, because that betrayal intersects deeply with Dean's broken trust in Sam in season 5, and if there is one thing Sam's ego absolutely cannot take, it's reminders of moments where he proved Dean could not trust him.

Sense and Insensitivity really is an episode about sibling dynamics... Because it's more obvious to the audience with the B-plot involving Eda and Lilith, but don't forget the A-plot of Luz and King, especially with the hindsight of King being an actual child, and him openly declaring Luz is his sister!!!
Because Luz and King, Eda and Lilith; Both of them navigating their relationships and the awkwardness of how they do care, but there's also a little bit of jealousy with how one seems so much more successful and capable and dependent, and so the 'smaller' sibling feels the need to compensate for that and keep up. But also they still care for each other!!! The smaller one still wants their sibling to be their sibling!!!
So you have King boasting about his success with Hunter's favorite novel before opening himself to ask Luz sincerely to come to his book signing, plus Luz admitting she never really cared about the contest, she just wanted to have fun with King!!! And Eda feeling the need to one-up Lilith's jab but more importantly reveling in being childhood sisters again, and Lilith's whole inferiority complex but also legitimate guilt in offering to cure the Archivist's curse she inflicted. Luz and Eda actually think about having fun but for King and Lilith, there's this whole stake regarding their self-esteem here.
And then they talk it out! Mostly in Eda and Lilith's case! The confident sibling steps in to save the insecure one who gets themselves into trouble! They reiterate that at the core of it their sibling matters to them more than 'winning' the dynamic! It sets up Lilith acknowledging that between these mutually co-existing feelings -missing Eda but also wanting to beat her at something- she cares about Eda more and so she prioritizes that in defying Belos!!!
Plus Luz spending that episode just wanting to hang out with King, and then King realizing this, and them furthering their bond so by Really Small Problems he's the one who just wants to hang out with his sibling and he's wondering why Luz doesn't go back to him while enjoying her other friends, just as King himself went back to her despite having an entire fandom! So SaI is King taking Luz for granted only to realize by RSP that he really does care so much!!! It's making my heart tender y'all. Sense and Insensitivity is highly underrated to me and one of my favorites for the A-plot, and not JUST the B-plot!!!
Also man imagine being the Titan and watching all this. It must've been agonizing because sure it sucks to have a racist white guy bastardize your name and magic for the purpose of exterminating the civilization you helped come into existence. But imagine seeing your son get into a fight with his sister that you've considered adopting as the two get legitimately hurt and you feel for both. And there's nothing you can do but watch.

what series scratch the same "itch" as TLT for you? Recently finished the trilogy and feel empty and have found nothing to fill the void in my chest (lol) that TLT had in the weeks I was reading it. I have already experienced homestuck, when thhey cry, and most of the other "big names" of similar media. Any format works as long as its good. I like morally grey characters (Ianthe), well written female leads, character driven narratives and lesbians (in that order.
1. Princess Floralinda and the forty-flight tower (by Tamsyn Muir. excellent audio book narrated by Moira Quirk, same voice actor as TLT)
2. All of Tamsyn Muir's other novellas and short stories (The magician's apprentice, The house that did 16 loops of time, undercover, chew, the deepwater bride, etc)
Next up is entirely my personal and extremely picky and subjective preferences of brain zing, ranked in order of me remembering them
Chainsaw man manga (i read this 5x back to back when I first got into it in 2021. part 1 is complete, part 2 is still updating. part 1 can be experienced as a complete work. the anime is very good but the first episode is not as good as everything after it)
This is how we lose the time war book (feels sorta like fanfiction but the prose is gorgeous)
Interview with the vampire tv show (it's fun, it's camp, there are a lot of gay and bisexual people making really terrible decisions and being very hot)
Gurren Lagann anime (my favorite anime of all time. the women characters are not good, as is typical of many animes. the bathhouse episode can be skipped in its entierty without losing any plot. the overall story is really good and gives me that zing)
Arcane tv show (i watched this in full once and every since have just watched a caitvi + jinx whump clipshow but it did give me that zing. i do not care about the men)
Fullmetal alchemist manga or FMA brotherhood (really good and at this point a classic. royai is the queerplatonic campal blueprint i will not be taking critique at this time)
Revolutionary girl utena anime (watch the sub, do not watch the dub, the dub didn't make them gay. it's really good but heavy TWs and also it is paced like a 90's anime so: slow with a fair amount of filler, which can be good or bad depending on your preferences)
I have complicated feelings about Baru Cormerant and recommend reading up on content warnings if things like violent homophobia and very intimate portrayals of being a colonized subject are things that would upset you. It felt a little too personal to my life for me to like... think it was "fun" or whatever like it felt uncomfortably personal (and also subjectively I didn't super enjoy the pacing of the latter 2 books) but it did make me feel a lot of things and think a lot of thoughts. if the blurb sounds like something you are interested in then I recomend giving it a shot and then you can decide what you think of it yourself
Ancillary justice book (liked this one a lot, but havent felt motivated to read the sequel)
Other fun Studio Trigger animes such as Promare, Cyberpunk 2077, Kill la Kill
Nausicaa and the valley of the wind manga (the movie is good but the manga spanned 10 years, is gorgeously rendered, and goes MUCH more in depth especially wrt climate philosophy and such)
Slay the Princess video game (on steam but also I got into it just by watching letsplays online. It's really good and REALLY interesting, i love how it uses the visual novel format to its story advantage to pull of some incredibly cool story twists. Highly recomend!)
I feel like I am forgetting things that made my brain zing. My childhood special interest was CATS the musical (stage play and 1998 recorded production) and i definitely got brain zing from that but I don't think it has a lot of taste overlaps with tlt. this post really went off the rails but in my defense, it is after midnight
