As asked for, here it is,, me thinking about Sapnap’s character and how he could hurt us so bad if he wanted to.

So part of what I’m about to go into is based in canon, but is not canon itself. That bit serves as a speculation of one potential way Sapnap could play his character (but currently doesn’t really seem to be?). And this is just me talking about characters for fun, not a serious prediction or critique or anything :)

And, because this is built entirely around his dynamic with c!Dream, about half of this is about him. 

(also here is the obligatory disclaimer that this is all about the dream smp storyline and characters, so i’m talking about roleplay, not the actual content creators themselves. also, heads up, i briefly talk about the beginning of the march 1st tommy stream.)

I already talked about how Sapnap’s character is endlessly loyal to Dream on a surface level, and how the reason he was so upset about Dream saying Spirit didn’t matter was because of how he was punished for killing Spirit, but when Tommy used Spirit against him, Dream went and told Tommy he didn’t care about Spirit. This gave the impression that Dream only cared about Spirit when it was Sapnap who used them, not Tommy. 

But now let’s talk about how Sapnap is, as is everyone else in the server, an unreliable narrator, and how Dream definitely did care about Tommy using Spirit’s leather as leverage against him. A lot.

Spirit, for anyone who might have only heard of the horse, was Dream’s pet on the server back when it first started, before Tommy even joined. They were Dream’s prized pet and a horse he genuinely cared about. Sapnap then borrowed them and ended up causing them to die to the mobs that night. Given this was before lore and before anyone had actual characters, the reactions they had were more reflections of their actual reactions to it than anything planned or acted up (although still acted up to a degree seeing as they're all friends playing minecraft on stream together, but not to the degree we would expect to see today on the server). But, these early days are treated as being canon in the server’s storyline, and the members who were around back then do tend to treat this time period as canon in terms of their character’s backgrounds and personalities, so I believe that these reactions should be treated as canon.

So for those unfamiliar with the death of Spirit, and who have not actually seen what happened for themselves, a brief explanation of how they reacted: Dream was upset. The two had been joking around until a skeleton shot down Spirit, and Sapnap went silent in that way we all know and recognize as the immediate realization that “Oh I just messed up bad.” After about a minute of sapnap’s shocked silence, Dream figured out that Sapnap had killed his horse and was in a mix of disbelief and being sad over the loss of his pet while Sapnap was continually apologizing. Dream did genuinely care about Spirit, and was upset when they died. Looking back at this through the current lens of Dream’s character, this was the moment Dream had his first attachment on the server ripped away from him, and by his own best friend.

Dream cared about Spirit. A lot. He griefed Sapnap’s house as an act of revenge over their death. This could be considered the first time Dream snapped, if we view his pre-lore self with the same familiarity we have with his current in-lore character.

When Tommy used Spirit as leverage against him, Dream snapped for the second time.

During the meeting with Dream following Tommy and Ranboo robbing George and griefing his house, Tommy attempted to use Spirit’s leather as leverage to bend Dream to his will. And it worked. Not for long, but it still worked. When Tommy brought out Spirit’s leather to use against Dream, he backed down immediately, and the atmosphere of the meeting between Dream, Tommy, and the others present (Tubbo, Fundy, Quackity, and Ranboo) shifted entirely. 

Dream’s initial reaction to Tommy bringing out Spirit was to grow quiet and listen. 

“Dream you don’t have anything on me anymore, because you don’t have the discs.”

“What if I get it Tommy? Right now I have nothing, but what if I get it?”

Fundy and Quackity joined in with Tommy, excited at the realization that they were the ones with leverage against Dream for once. Dream finally snapped. Dream denounced Spirit, which Sapnap heard and seemingly took at face value. Dream gave Tubbo the exile or war ultimatum. Four days later, Dream commissioned Sam to construct Pandora’s Vault.

Dream’s obsession with controlling attachments on the server shifted from wanting to have the discs to use against Tommy to wanting to have leverage against everyone once his own attachment was used against him for the second time, once unintentional and once very intentional. 

Which takes us to Pandora’s Vault. It was painfully clear from the moment that Tommy started his stream that something was about to go very wrong. And everything started off as the fighting and shouting back and forth that we pretty much all saw coming with those two being kept together in lockdown where Dream had already spent the past month in solitary confinement. But it was established that the fighting we were seeing had been going on, likely for the entire past week, and had reached some form of plateau.

Even Sam was encouraging patience from Tommy, indicating that things had been consistently bad the entire time that they were both in there, and that further escalation may have stopped. They were fighting continuously, with Tommy insulting and hitting the cat that had been given to him to keep him company while stuck in there with Dream, while Dream talked about how he loved the cat and would try and stop Tommy from striking it.

And then Tommy killed the cat. 

And Dream’s initial reaction to Tommy killing the cat was to grow quiet and listen. 

We all know what happened after that. 

So, time to bring this back around to Sapnap and how his character has so much potential to absolutely destroy us.

(This is where I start talking more about hypotheticals than analysis of his character as he is in canon currently.)

I’ve mentioned before that Sapnap is loyal to Dream, and how he is constantly seeking Dream’s approval despite constantly being put down by him. But why? Why would Sapnap be doing this? What is a reasonable explanation for his character to behave this way other than the current, vague explanation we’ve been given that he still views Dream as his best friend? Why does he stay loyal to Dream when it mostly just leaves him hurt and taken advantage of?

Maybe it’s because he sees the state of the server as it is right now as a home ripped apart by a friend that he is responsible for breaking in the first place.

He sees his best friend, who he hurt, and sees that he still hurts, and returns that hurt to everyone around him tenfold. Sapnap holds himself responsible for the state that his best friend, and subsequently the rest of the server, is currently in, and he thinks that helping to fix his friend is the key to fixing everything. That it’s the key to ridding himself of the guilt of accidentally killing Spirit and setting off Dream’s downward spiral all those months ago. 

Sapnap sees the world crumbling down around him. Sapnap sees a country blown to bedrock. Sapnap sees his friends getting hurt and killed by each other. Sapnap sees a child being brutally murdered. And Sapnap sees his own mistake at the core of all of it.

Sapnap needs Dreams approval because he needs to be forgiven, not just by Dream, but by everyone else he thinks he caused to suffer.

✧ you lugged it around with you when you entered the gym, backside facing forward to hide what it said

✧ you were a bit self-conscious, to say the least

✧ you got settled on the bleachers and watched the game

✧ but Bokuto rlly seemed out of his element; he missed a few potential points and the other team eventually got in the lead

✧ thinking that he needed a pick-me-up, you held up your large sign overhead sheepishly during a time out, hoping that Bokuto would notice

✧ everyone on the team started to snicker when they read your “You got this, Bokuto! Go Owls!” and gave suggestive looks to their team captain

✧ he was confused (Bokuto: “why are you all looking at me weirdly??”) until he finally turned around and saw your sign

✧ and fell 10x more in love with you

✧ and now he can die happy

✧ turning back to his team, tears pricking at his eyes, he quietly choked out:

✧ he was out with his teammates once when he saw you, so he called you over by name

✧ but since you’ve never met any of Oikawa’s teammates, except Iwaizumi, you were a bit hesitant

✧ seeing this, he goes over to you, gently grabbing your arm and pulling you over while reassuring you, “C’mon, I want you to meet my team. I think they’ll like you!”

✧ will introduce you as his friend

✧ however everyone sees through this (except u) and knows boyo wants mor

Okay so after you shared that one Ben/Kip fic the other day I went into the tag to see if there was anything else and I found your story that same day, but having no clue that it was yours (okay maybe a slight feeling that it was yours). I have to say though, I do really enjoy it, it’s lengthy and it does have jumps at times but it’s really, really enjoyable to read. Your characterization and take on Kip is the most unique I’ve seen and that’s honestly what makes the story great for me.

uhhhhhHh anyways yeah seriously. i’m all delicate b/c i havent shared writing in years and im painfully aware of how inconsistent i am when writing beyond like 500 words, but also hey, it could be worse. i dont even know how to look at my own interpretation of kip or describe it b/c i’m taking full advantage of the fact i can draw so heavily from my own thorough understanding of trauma and anxiodepression and etc and using it to color in these like thoughts and emotions that i don’t often try to draw b/c it’s like. tricky to draw stuff like “just excuse me while i sit here and have a silent crisis for the next few hours.” i’m going on too long as always, the point is, i also did put a nonzero amount of heart into trying to lend some earnestness to what i’m writing abt. not to be, like, a diary, but since this is indulging my dream abt kip living in peace and being kissed ninety times a day, and yet i also appreciate how negative feelings can be part of your life regardless of lack of external conflict or presence of good shit, so. i’m very much like. trying to totally embrace all the negative feelings that i wanna include, and not having this mean it excludes having security and comfort and love and shit. i’d thought about it sometimes since i have often been megadepressed while working on this lol…like veering away entirely from my intended direction…but i refuse. it’s going where it’s obviously going and has already partly gone even in the bits i’ve posted so far. like i said i’m able to make something here out of my familiarity w totally miserable feelings

⁃ [ mconahey hey hey vc ] alright , alright , alright … this bitch never knew his father ! probably for the best, but surprise he was off in valdez up to no good, him and his dearest ma were in the city of stars ( angels ? ) LA ! his mother was an aspiring actress who never made it, but did her best to support him all the same . it made him kinda v independent , with a lot of time to himself which he spent mostly in nature b/c la has some rly nice hiking trails omg

⁃ suffers from ptsd stemming from a car accident he was in when he was like sixteen, resulting in the death of his step-dad and a rly bad stammer that he went to therapy for . 

⁃ mr. ethan was always curious abt his but his mom was adamant on telling him anything until he was eighteen . when he turned eighteen , his mom was like ye he’s in valdez i don’t talk to him but like do what u will with that info !

⁃ he takes a trip down to valdez to discover his dearest daddy is just bumming around total deadbeat… Sad  but ethan so very longing for that father figure keeps in touch, and gets to know him and for the most part rly likes him . discovers he has an alcohol abuse problem , most likely stemming from ptsd from vietnam .

⁃ anyhaps he doesn’t stay in valdez b/c he’s like nah .. not my scene lmao , but goes to school a couple states over in arizona , so he can be close to his momther and father … aw , but closer to mom cos she’s more Valid but he keeps in regular contact with his father and tries to see him at least once a year

⁃ he studies psychology and loves it , loves school , becomes a counselling psychologist specifically for those with ptsd ( but also has the right requisites for like psychiatry cos he took bio or whatever life sci requisite u need idk ) 

⁃ ok bare with me cos im not even sure on the details, but in the span of him first meeting his pops and now , dad ends up in jail ( he owed money to the savages, so did a job to pay it off which included a home invasion with several other ppl in which one person died, even tho he wasn’t the one who shot him , he took the fall cos he was pretty expendable considering he wasn’t actually part of the gang ) , ethan offers to help with costs of legal advice and his sentence is reduced to like ten years

⁃ n his dad is like hey im out ! come chill xd and ethan’s like ok !! and he comes and it turns out his dad’s been out of jail for like six months and has already amounted a debt against him so he’s doing jobs for the savages again ? and is like lol wanna help ,, , and a 35 year old ethan still vying for his father’s acceptance is like ok .. . ig

⁃ so he delivers some drugs ( his dad comes up with some bs excuse like the ppl he’s meant to deliver to will recognize him n beat him up or something ) but apparently it was the savages set up to kill his pops 1) b/c he’s a general nuisance and 2) so he wouldn’t speak out against them regarding the home invasion as he’d been trying to get outside law help to prove his innocence even tho it never amounted to anything

⁃ so instead ethan gets brutally beat up instead and nearly killedt until the assassin or whoever is like .. . im p sure the target’s meant to be older ghjfkfgh ( this wouldn’t be like assassin incompetence they were prolly just told kill the guy who shows up with the drugs xoxo ) the ptsd is NOT thriving ... 

⁃ as soon as he’s out of the hospital ethan goes stupidly all high and mighty to the savages hq being like wtf is up kyle , and they’re basically like,  if u wanna protect ur dad u gon have to stick around in valdez and mr. deadbeat dad over this is putting on the puppy eyes like pls dont let me die lol and reluctantly he’s like aight fam i got u

⁃ SO NOW HIS DAD’S JUST LIKE A 60 YEAR OLD SOD deadbeating around valdez basically trapping him and which rly shows his father’s true colours ( also did he kno that ethan cld’ve gotten killed .. maybe so ) and yet the amount of reverence ethan still holds for him is .. Crackhead level

⁃ honestly it’s been ten years and doesn’t know if the threat still stands but valdez has kinda been ingrained in him at this point and although he wants to leave he can’t bring himself to , it’s also why he doesn’t switch to the cobras even though he has plenty reason to  - feeling like participation in the feud would only ensnare him more

honestly ngl i also kinda feel like c!dream apologists are also doing a huge disservice to cc!dreams writing of his character too

because c!dream is a brilliant character, but he is an awful person. hes also very complex, because he is someone who wasnt completely evil at the start (although he definitely wasnt purely Good either), and man obviously has some issues of some sort but in the end he CHOSE to be the person he is now. to abandon all attachments (except, ironically, his attachment to tommy), to do the horrid things he did, to manipulate, control, kill, lie, etc etc

c!dream is a very interesting character with a lot of potential to have his views, ideals, and morals taken apart and analysed, but it doesnt change the fact he is ultimately, a bad person, and has done awful things. and i love people who try to give that in-depth look to his character and understand hes also more complicated than just “bad guy being bad”

so saying “c!dream did nothing wrong and also c!tommy deserved what he got” is not only gross victim blaming (who cares if its in fictional minercaft roleplay it was acted and thought out really well and showed some heavy themes if its not such a big deal then why dont you say the same about dreams imprisonment and torture then hm? seems like blatant hypocrisy to me) but also a disservice to both cc!dream and cc!tommys writing and acting lmao

im just forever convinced c!dream apologists who say stuff like that are one or more of these, if not all:

cant seperate c!dream from cc!dream and therefore think c!dream can do no wrong and is justified in everything he does because its dream

dislike cc!tommy because often the excuses are “oh hes annoying” or whatever, and most of the “annoying” stuff c!tommy supposedly does is actually just cc!tommy goofing around and trying to be a bit chaotic for fun, yet again unable to seperate c! from cc!

just lack all critical thought and ability to criticise their favourite media and characters, take everything at face value and dont realise things are deeper than they seem, and also the characters are all unreliable narrators because of POV and human nature, so you need to consider all povs, facts, and use your brain as well as take actual narrative clues and context into consideration

think the world is black and white, and dont realise characters, just like real people, can be very complex, and there isnt a single person out there who is purely good or purely bad. but also dont  you dare use that to say “oh theyre all morally grey so its ok” because as @/miss-match01 once said “a darker white and a lighter black are both technically grey. but that in no way makes them the same colour”. guess what. ALL characters have done some bad stuff and deserve criticism, but they still hold different implications and weight?? thats just common sense lol, its like trying to compare “someone punched me in the face” to “he ran someone over with a car on purpose”
