SENSES AND OTHER SPECIFIC HCs. // KAVEH.
what does your muse smell like ?
perfumes and soaps, scented oils, often something floral or pleasantly earthy. there's always something fresh about his scent, and a lingering undertone that calls forth thoughts of the rainforest. there are hints of ink and old books, of candle wax and fresh parchment. and, often, the betraying traces of wine.
what do your muse’s hands feel like ?
soft, warm. he takes good care of his hands as without them he'll be nothing. the skin is smooth and silken, for the most part, but even his careful moisturising routine cannot fully prevent the callouses upon his fingers, caused by long hours with quill / pen / pencil in hand. one might mistake them for delicate at a glance, but there's a strength there in those dextrous fingers.
what does your muse usually eat in a day ?
when not working on a project, kaveh indulges in whatever he fancies that day. he always eats well when he isn't stressed (which is less and less these days) and will take his meals in inns, taverns, restaurants, etc, rather than cooking for himself at home - if he can afford to. when working on a project, however, he is terrible at remembering to eat. he'll grab snacks at irregular intervals and only sometimes remembers to eat at least one decent meal.
does your muse have a good singing voice ?
it's decent enough. the trouble is he only ever really sings (in public) after he's been drinking, and he absolutely cannot sing whilst drunk.
does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks ?
he's a chronic overthinker. his mind is never quiet and he's always stressing (often unnecessarily) over something he's said or done, or something that's been said to him. being so in his own head all the time, he's also terrible at losing things or forgetting things. he struggles to maintain control of his facial expression (and the emotion along with it) when stressed, nervous, or angry, and his entire body will often clench and tense.
what does your muse usually look like/wear ?
as an artist and an appreciator of beauty, kaveh is somewhat extravagent in his chosen attire and the image he presents. he likes to look the part, and seeks out the most beautifully crafted garments he can find. he will marvel at the skill involved in almost anything - weaving, blends of dyes, beautiful adornments, anything that speaks to the creativity of the mind that crafted it.
is your muse affectionate ? How so ?
extremely, with the right people. acts of service and gifts are his love language, and he will go to great lengths to find the perfect gift for someone he cares for. small acts such as tidying/cleaning personal or communal spaces, cooking meals, completing small tasks or duties to lighten someone's workload, bringing in flowers to freshen up a room - this is how kaveh shows his affection.
what position does your muse sleep in ?
full on starfish. he'll go to sleep on his side, fairly compact, but as soon as he's in deep he'll gradually spread out until he's taking up as much space as possible. doesn't even matter if there's someone sharing the bed with him, he'll just sprawl over the top of them.
could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room ?
yes. if he's not muttering to himself over designs, you'll hear the jingling of his clothes as he walks. his actual steps themselves are fairly light, but the rest of him betrays his approach. his mutterings will get progressively louder depending on how stressed or frustrated he is (and if he's been drinking, you could hear him from across the fckn desert).

Random date night with Illumi, Hisoka, and Chrollo
Hello, anon! Ask and you shall receive! This prompt is very interesting and I will try to keep it in character as much as possible. To sum this up, Hisoka would take you to an ice cream shop, a carnival, or apple orchard while Illumi would rather go to an art or historical museum. Chrollo would persuade you to attend a book reading/author signing or go hiking. Depending on who you are and what your ideal date is, I’m sure you’d find them all fun. Going to a carnival or apple orchard is my go-to since I’ve barely been because they’re all in the suburbs. These headcanons are explained much more than the others. That is why Chrollo and Illumi seem to be short, but they’re not. Also, I can’t wait for Halloween because these headcanons are going to be amazing. I am extremely sorry if there are grammar errors! Taking classes on Zoom is frustrating and now my brain has to relearn everything that I lost in 3 months! Before we get started, I have a few announcements.
This post is more laid back than my other headcanons because I tried to keep it as canon as possible.
I want to thank you all for 65 followers! It means a lot! I’m happy to see that a lot of you enjoy my writing and like it enough to follow me! I have a challenge for you! When I reach 100 followers, I will host some type of writing event here...but I need ideas. I’ve seen some pages do specials where you can send an ask and pretend like you're talking to a character and I respond with what they’d say. SEND ME IDEAS! I WILL CREDIT YOU!
I will be stepping back a little more than before. I’ll still be logged in and re-blogging but as far as writing posts like this...it may only be once or twice a week. You see, I’m in college and I’m struggling financially and I have to work on scholarships. If you all send me an ask, be patient.
Voltron posts will only be created based on asks. I will not be writing posts about VLD if no one requests them. I do not receive any feedback from it anymore and no one seems to like them.
Now, let’s get into the post.
Let's start with Illumi first.
Headcanon 1: Illumi has a secret admiration for different types of art but he specifically enjoys pop art and surrealism. He has commented on how surrealism makes his brain twist and his feelings swirl as he tries to figure out the piece and what inspires it.
He prefers not to participate in tours as he likes to digest the art at his own pace.
Headcanon 2: In his spare time, he paints on a canvas. His art style consists of both surrealism and abstract art. For a person with a dark personality, his compositions always contain bright colors and abstract techniques that leave you wondering about his TRUE personality. He is truly a good man with a bright personality but after being abused for so long, those behaviors/personalities have been shoved so far down his throat that they may not come back up.
He has a bad habit of asking you what you thought about every single piece of art you passed. The conversations were great but this is a date after all. The playful conversation slowly turns into a lecture about art. Although you loved your bf’s dictionary-like brain it also drained your energy.
One of his favorite artists is Vincent Van Gough. Although he favors surrealism, Van Gogh’s art style was mind-blowing to him. So amazed that he buys several Van Gogh t-shirts from the gift shop.
His favorite piece created by Van Gough is “Starry Night”.
He notices that you are becoming bored and decides that it is time for MORE excitement, one that you are certain to enjoy.
“Where are we going,” you ask, pretending to be interested.
“Down to the basement. We are going to have a bite to eat.”
Since Illumi rarely smiled, when he did smile it drove you wild. The anticipation of what his next move was going to be is what drove that wildness. Being a bounty hunter was thrilling already but dating a smart, badass assassin was totally out of your league but it worked out.
Headcanon 3: Illumi’s idea of being romantic is dramatically different from yours. He believes just spending time with you on the couch was enough. He is correct; but if you have the time and funds, your time together should be a little spontaneous. You insisted on dates outside of the house because his family will not stay out of your business.
“Illumi, I am too hungry for more trivia.”
He chuckles. “Don’t worry. So am I. That is why I’ve decided to take you to a wine and cheese party.”
Huh? Wine and Cheese at 3PM? That’s ok. When was there a time limit on when you can drink alcohol?
Illumi has indirectly attended parties as such when he was 15 years old. He never drank, but he watched as his mother’s friends (surprisingly) talked about business and their children. This time, you weren’t going to talk about business for once. Instead, you two were going to actually talk about what couples discuss.
Headcanon 4: When introduced to alcohol for the first time, Illumi immediately stated how he hated brown liquor. That includes Hennessy, Jack Daniels, etc. It makes him sick to his stomach. He prefers to drink Smirnoff mixed with fruity drinks like strawberry or pineapple.
He loves it when you make these drinks for him on a summer day.
Hence the title wine and cheese, you both go to a stand-up table, place your brochures down, and actually have a wonderful conversation not involving work or hunting.
Illumi smiled a few times, more than usual. Whenever he appears to be softer even around you, that is because he has mellowed out and doesn't have the overbearing weight of his family on his shoulders. You set him free.
Hisoka
According to a one-shot that another manga artist created, they expressed that Hisoka was found on the side of the road, was taken in by someone that worked at a local circus, and learned Nen in a matter of days. Hisoka’s clown look and having the skills of a magician proves that this has to be canon in some way.
Headcanon 1: Given this potential backstory, going to a carnival is his go-to every summer. He wants to take you to a circus but saves that for you as an engagement gift.
Everyone with a heart knows that whether or not you’re in a relationship or not the carnival is fun as hell! Expensive fried food, elephant ears, funnel cake, ICEE’s, rides, and stuffed animals are to die for!
Being at a carnival relaxes him so his bloodlust isn’t activated unless someone bumps into him and causes a scene.
Headcanon 2: PDA is something that Hisoka does well; he doesn’t overdo it but does it enough where people get the impression that you are a couple and aren’t “best friends”.
While completing a mission depending on how rough it may be, he insists that you tag along to see how he handles the situation. You’ve already seen his ruthlessness from Hunter’s exam but he insists.
His sense of pride gets the best of him sometimes. Sometimes his head is so big that it reminds you of a large birthday balloon.
Headcanon 3: ANYWAY, given his nature, he is very adventurous, dangerous, and courageous. If he wants to go on the Demon Drop, he’ll do it and you DO not have a choice in the matter. He’ll tease or guilt trip you into doing something that you would not like to do.
“Well, you wouldn’t want me to cling on to someone else, would you?”
“No. Of course not,” you reply.
“Let’s go then, scaredy-cat.”
As a hunter, you’ve seen worse. Why are you so afraid to go on a ride?
Headcanon 4: At apple orchards, cornfield mazes are one of his favorites. You cannot for the life of you figure out how to get out but he can. He grabs a scarecrow and scares you from behind. That annoys you but is nothing compared to later on that night.
Oh. My. God. It’s haunted house time!
“Hisoka, I’m not going in!”
“Why not? I’ll protect you.”
“Because they’re monsters and I already have to deal with one.”
It took him a second to catch on that you were talking about him.
“That’s going to bite you in the butt, kitten.”
Headcanon 5: Like Killua, Hisoka has a sweet tooth. Don’t allow his buff appearance to fool you!
He LOVES caramel apples, elephant ears, funnel cake, freshly squeezed lemonade, fudge, and cotton candy. How can this man manage to stay in shape? The world may never know.
Headcanon 6: He isn’t one to play by other people’s rules but he sets his own rules with your relationship that you both must obey. One of those rules says that neither of you can be on your phones while together.
Headcanon 7: Hisoka insists that you both wear either matching pants or matching shirts to avoid unnecessary flirtation.
He isn’t jealous but on “us time”, he doesn’t want to lose a single second.
Headcanon 8: Hisoka only jumps in when necessary. Given that you’ve passed the hunter’s exam and work as a bodyguard, he knows you can handle your business. If the person can’t take a hint, then he steps in. They almost back up immediately considering Hisoka is towering over them.
When the moon shines, you both go to the car and off to sleep in your comfy king-sized bed.
Chrollo
We all know that Chrollo loves to read! What does he specifically like to read? What Genre? Does he like to read alone or with other people?
Although Chrollo is a thief and must be hidden in the shadows, the authorities have called off the search for him for at least 3 years. Slowly but surely, he begins to find himself in the outside world again.
Chrollo once discussed a book with the Phantom Troupe when they were being transported to another place for a mission. He read “Tears of a Tiger” by Sharon M. Draper.
The reading sessions are opened with an affirmation and a reason to be thankful to be alive. He says he is thankful for the troupe, glances at you, and smiles. No one catches on to that sly face except for Phinks.
Headcanon 1: Chrollo is very silent and shy to an extent. He only associates with people he knows and trusts. You are the social butterfly at this moment.
Chrollo tags along behind you like a shy child, holding your hand while you stick out your free hand to greet everyone.
Today, the book club was going to read “Divergent”.
Headcanon 2: Although he loves to read, he hates it when others read out loud. Most people are drably read and it annoys him. After a while, he takes over. Chrollo was tense the first 30 minutes of the meeting because two cops were there but neither of them noticed it was him.
Headcanon 3: Chrollo often acts the part of the character that he is reading in the book. His tone, attitude, and emphasis on certain words keep the group engaged. He is complimented on his acting!
“Good Job, honey,” you whisper.
He responds by tightly squeezing your hand.
His tone was so impressive that the host insisted that he read for the entire night. He was ok with that because in between reads he was often distracted by a lovely pair of jeans and shoes you had on. You were into writing, so hearing others read and act out the characters helped.
Headcanon 4: In some settings, Chrollo is very braggadocious. He insisted that the group read one of your stories so you could be provided with feedback.
“We’d be delighted to view your story, y/n!”
“It will be fun!”
The book club wasn’t a stereotypical club that only consisted of soccer moms but instead consisted of men and women who were involved with a business, law enforcement, health, etc. This was an open space for everyone to relax and forget about their demanding jobs.
After the meeting, the group went to dinner at a nearby pizzeria. You all enjoyed large pizzas, beer, salads, and dessert. How could your stomach (or anyone’s stomach) hold that much?
Chrollo laughed so much that it made you question if he was your actual boyfriend or not. He even engaged in conversations with the two off-duty cops! For once, you helped Chrollo experience the greater things in life; true love, friendship, and happiness.
“Thank you,” he whispered and slyly placed a kiss on your hand. “For everything.”

6 vs 9
Thank you for answering my question on Ni and worrying!
I have debated on 6 vs. 9 before, but I’m pretty sure I’m a 9.
Not sure if you want an answer or not, but why not? I’ve got time. ;)
I do see 6 aspects in myself:
Lots of self-doubt and over-thinking. I take commissions as an artist and usually I’m excited to hear about a new commission but then get worried and think I won’t be able to do it / won’t do a good enough job. <- if you are a 9, this could just be your line to 6 and general anxiousness about doing a good job per your (I assume) 1 wing.
Being indecisive when anxious and wanting someone to tell me what to do/solve my problem. <- Hmm, I haven’t talked to my 9 core friends about this a lot, but I do notice some of them consult me in a “this is happening!!!” way and I give them suggestions on what to do, so… I’d say 9s will consult people they trust if they don’t know what to do. Also, did you decide on INFP? If so, indecisiveness is Ne.
I tend to plan for the worst/expect the worst (but hope for the best). <- Pessimism is a human condition. xD
I don’t project, though - I do worry that people may not like me, but I don’t test them to find out if that is the case and I always blame myself for it (i.e if they don’t like me it must be because I’m boring or weird or not emotionally reactive enough). <- I used to do this way more when I was young. I’d send an e-mail, get anxious if I didn’t get a normal prompt response, comb back over what I said searching for anything that might have upset them, and feel anxious for no reason assuming someone is mad at me. I would send out little feelers to see what was going on – quick texts or notes in a friendly tone to see if that generated a response. Now I just assume, when that anxiousness kicks in, that as adults, we’re all busy. But self-blaming is a condition of Fi, and not related to Enneagram type, IMO.
Also, I don’t provoke people to examine reactions. In fact I hate conflict (the classic “raised voices = yelling” 9 issue is true for me; in 95% of arguments I’m the peacemaker trying to find middle ground between other people). <- with me, it depends. I have zero problems with conflict at home or arguing with my parents / family members, but the less I know you and the less I trust you, the more I don’t want to fight with you. It’s true, though, that I have that bratty 6w7 energy that sometimes provokes to get a rise out of my loved ones, which my mother (a 1w9) absolutely hates. It’s hard to shut off, but I try for her sake. Course my father is quarrelsome too, so we’re like a tempest in a teapot sometimes.
I also don’t see many positive 6 aspects in myself:
The ability/desire to build connections and make a security system. <- Interesting. My security is my bank account and having a few people I can count on. It’s not stalking up my pantry, for sure. *cough * weak Si, like what kinds of foods even go together? *cough* Though I work very hard in my family business so we can all thrive, which is a security of its own.
Being loyal to friends and checking in with them to make sure we’re “okay” (I never do this barring an actual argument or something - mostly I ghost people; loyalty is not my strong suit!) <- This is very true of me. If anyone picks on any of my friends, I will get offended and fiercely defend them (even if I have criticisms of them myself). And I do like to stay connected as an extrovert. But following up what I said above, I don’t try to build super close connections as much as I did when I was younger. I’ve realized people have their own lives, and you’re lucky to get their attention at all. But I don’t ghost people. I used to stay in very immediate contact with them.
I feel very little need to connect with other people. My friends are basically my family and in-laws - about 10 people who I truly trust and would do anything for. I don’t really want more people-related responsibilities. <- lucky little sp-dom introvert. ;) Though I can somewhat relate. More people means more energy going out, and I spend so much of it on my books and hobbies, I don’t have a lot left over. I was laughing with a fellow sp-dom INFP just yesterday about how we are both like “OMG, I have SOCIAL events in October, 5 of them!! I’m going to be so busy!!! Will it be too much???” Chill, girl. They’re interspersed over weeks. Stop over-thinking “invasions of my time!”
Meanwhile, I have many positive and negative 9 attributes:
The core problem of 9, apathy, is a BIG problem for me. Many problems in my life have been caused by not acting, by waiting too long in hopes that the problem will go away, by riding along on easy work (even if it is work I love and is worth doing) and not doing the hard work that would lead to the achievements I really want to make (writing a novel, etc.). I’m not a lazy/apathetic person in general - I can (and do) work extremely hard (I run my own art business and working 12+ hours a day is typical for me). But it’s a mental apathy issue, the quailing at mentally facing hard tasks and ending up doing small easy things that soothe me. <- aww, tho I relate to procrastinating. Being around 9s, it kind of amuses me to watch you self-soothe. Like, shouldn’t you be studying for your math final and not reorganizing the bathroom cabinets? And it seems like 9s can drag their feet even when it’s important until they decide to do it, then nothing stands in their way.
Other 9 aspects/problems I can see in myself:
Being vague - not knowing what I really want and getting frustrated by not having a clear vision of what to do. <- yeah, that’s 9ish.
Suppressing anger and other “negative” emotions because of seeking inner peace/blankness. And if I do express anger (usually in a burst under stress) I feel guilty about it. <- 1 wing, yeah.
Setting up walls between other people and myself because I can’t deal with their emotions. I don’t struggle with the intense kind of “merging” described by many 9s, but I think that might be because I’m Fi-dom and probably sp-dom. But it is still exhausting to handle the emotions, opinions, etc. of many people for long periods of time. <- I need to ask my 9w8 INFP more about this specifically, but I don’t know that she fully merges so much as prematurely (sp-dom) throws up a barrier and says Nope to things, in hopes of avoiding other people creeping into her feelings. And yeah, she finds being around especially temperamental or high energy people difficult, since it’s such a bombardment of drama + her own intense reactions.
Tolerating behavior I don’t like for too long because “they might have good intentions.” Thinking positively of people because believing the worst of them feels mean. <- same for me, Ne + compliant type issues.
I have very strong opinions but I don’t like to argue with other people. I tend to believe that if the truth exists, other people will be drawn to it without my twisting their arm and making them see it. <- that’s nice of you and very healthy Fi-dom. I … will absolutely argue up to a point, then decide it’s not worth my time and pointless.
My motto (good and bad) is often “Let’s wait and see if things improve.” <- haha.
Also, although I do struggle with 6ish self-doubt, when it comes down to it I trust my gut and believe that I know what is best for myself. People can give me advice and I’ll nod and thank them but inside I’m thinking “You don’t know me!” In general I am (or at least appear and strive to be) a cheerful, emotionally stable, positive person. So… I still think 9 gets more points. But honestly, this is one of those things that makes me believe in tritypes because I relate a lot to both of them! Thank you for reading all of this!
Go with your gut. Be a happy little 9. :)
ETA: Regarding relating to them both -- of course you do, 6 is your stress line, so it will show up regularly. ;)

Guide to writing Cassandra Cain
I’ve seen a lot of people in the Bat Family fandom say that they often minimize or exclude Cassandra from their works because they don’t know enough about her. While I HIGHLY recommend reading her Batgirl comic from 2000, I’ve compiled a guide to her personality, abilities, and relationships with other DC characters here for easy reference. (I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as possible, but I’ve probably forgotten something so please feel free to add onto this if you know the character well)
PERSONALITY
Cassandra has a difficult time with language, spoken or written. This generally manifests through her relying on body language and single-word sentences to get her point across. When she needs to speak, it is halting and awkward, but not broken. She will pause frequently, mumble, or use Malapropisms, but she is a perfectionist and is frustrated when she doesnt use perfect grammar or pronunciation. At times she will be unable to find the words for a particular thought. She usually is portrayed as being unable to read or write.
Cass sometimes uses mimicry when she has trouble putting words together herself, quoting films, tv shows, and plays.
Cassandra is compassionate above all else. She values life, and protecting it is her highest priority. She will not hesitate to put herself in danger to save others, and does not tolerate killing.
Cassandra has a strong guilt complex. Anyone who dies on her watch weighs heavily on her conscience, even if there was nothing she could’ve done to stop it. She does not let go of these “failures” easily.
Cassandra has little regard for societal norms and expectations. While generally caring and compassionate, she often comes across as rude due to spending most of her life either locked in a bunker or surviving in the wilderness. This includes poor table manners, a tendency to lurk in the shadows, and mirroring her adoptive father’s habit of coming and going without warning.
Cassandra has great pride in her physical prowess, but little in her moral character. Though she has a strong moral code and is quick to intervene when others break it, she does not see herself as above them and may even have more faith in them than in herself, as she still feels that she may not be able to rise above her upbringing. She can be rather arrogant about her superior agility and combat prowess, however.
Cassandra is fond of friendly jibes and snark, usually but not always expressed nonverbally. Her sense of humor is slightly unconventional, but usually good-natured.
Cassandra wears her heart on her sleeve. She is very emotional, and her past trauma can make her emotionally vulnerable, especially because of her lack of communicative skills. Her emotions show through her entire body, even when she doesn’t vocalize them.
Cassandra is quick to leap before looking, but excellent at adapting to unexpected situations. She is a poor planner and rather impulsive, with a rebellious streak that sometimes makes it hard for her to listen to instructions. However, she is great at thinking on her feet and analyzing her situation in the moment.
Cassandra does not do things in half measures. When she wants to learn something, such as reading or detective work, she is eager to dive into the deep end even if it’s not always the best way to approach it. As mentioned before she is also a perfectionist when it comes to herself, so this approach often leads to frustration.
Cassandra is very physically affectionate, with little mind for personal space. This often comes in the form of gently touching the face of someone she believes to be in pain.
Cassandra is extremely empathetic, to the point that it can be overwhelming for her at times. She is very good at spotting falsehoods, hidden pain, etc.
Despite this, she often misinterprets social cues. For instance, when Barbara and Dick were going through a rough patch in their relationship, she though Dick had intentionally done something to hurt Barbara, and threw him out a window.
ABILITIES
Cass is fast. Really, really fast. She can move incredibly quickly and quietly, making her very hard to track.
Cass has a shocking amount of strength for her small size. She has punched through 3-inch thick quartz glass, kicked down concrete walls, and thrown a metahuman more than twice her size without issue.
Her primary advantage comes from her ability to read body language and predict her opponents’ actions, allowing her to dodge bullets and outmaneuver pretty much any non powered opponent. This ability does not work on robots, animals, or sufficiently nonhuman aliens.
Cassandra is a contender for the world’s best martial artist, along with Lady Shiva and Richard Dragon. She can pick up new fighting styles nearly instantly, allowing her to learn and adapt techniques she’s never encountered before.
Cass is an incredible acrobat, though not as good as Nightwing.
Cass is able to control the amount of force she uses to the point that she doesn’t usually have to worry about killing even when using normally lethal techniques.
She is able to use pressure points to paralyze someone nearly instantly, though she has only shown the ability to use it on those who do not expect her to attack.
She can stop a person’s heart using a special technique, and in later appearances was able to do so without endangering the person for a good length of time, though they’d still die if not revived within that time period.
She is very good at analyzing her surroundings, which has helped her solve cases.
Cassandra is exceptional at dividing her attention and energy, able to coordinate herself to the point that government agents assumed she was a metahuman.
She is very good at the intimidation side of the job, able to terrify even trained killers.
RELATIONSHIPS
Cassandra is very close to Stephanie Brown, who was her first real friend. She can be a bit overprotective of her, even using violence to keep her out of fights that Cass thinks will be too much for her, though she has largely grown out of that and these days has a lot more faith in her. Cassandra is able to unwind with Stephanie in ways that she has trouble doing with around other people, even those she trusts like Barbara and Tim. When Stephanie seemingly died, Cassandra was deeply affected, becoming shorter-tempered and more violent.
Cassandra sees Barbara as the mother she never had, and values her insight. Though she often chafes at Barbara’s well-intentioned attempts to get her to see beyond her life as Batgirl, she still cares deeply for her.
Cass sees Bruce as somewhat of a father figure as well as a bit of an idol, and seeks his approval. When she believes that she has disappointed him, it can be devastating for her. However, she also recognizes his pain and trauma, and sympathizes strongly with it. Her admiration also doesn’t always mean she’ll do what he says.
While Cassandra and Dick don’t always get along (as mentioned earlier), she usually sees him as a mentor and big brother, and she is often more relaxed around him than most people.
Cass and Jason’s interactions have been largely confrontational, and it’s likely that further encounters would be similar, as she is strongly opposed to lethal force and would endeavor to stop him if she could. That said, she would almost certainly understand the pain he went through, and would try to get through to him with words as much as she is capable, rather than immediately resorting to violence.
Cass and Tim have a long and complicated history. While the two of them started off rather tense, with Tim being somewhat intimidated by her, they soon grew very close, and treat each other as siblings. Their strengths complement each other, and they are able to work in synch with each other very well. She has also been known to break into his house to steal food and take a shower.
Like Jason, Cass’s interactions with Damian are few and far between. Their first meeting didn’t end well, as Cassandra pulled him from a building when he was disarming a bomb despite his protests that he could handle it. While she found some of what he said hurtful, she didn’t seem to hold much of a grudge, and I think they could find common ground due to their similar backgrounds.
Cassandra and Duke seem to be friends, though beyond that little is known of their relationship.
Cassandra is close with Harper Row, and the two of them definitely care for one another despite the troubled history between them.
Cass and Jean-Paul Valley bonded quickly over their shared inexperience with society, and they are both very fond of one-another.
Cassandra is friends with Dinah Lance, who she has been shown to train with on occasion.
Cass does not get along with Helena Bertinelli for obvious reasons, and when they worked together during the Battle for the Cowl there was quite a bit of tension between them.
Cassandra had a close relationship with Basil Karlo/Clayface during the time that he had reformed, as she had faith in his ability to change. His apparent death devastated her.
Her relationship with her biological father is complicated. Though she has always despised what he does for a living, it took a long time for her to come to terms with how badly he treated her.
Cass’s relationship with her biological mother is even more complex. In most depictions, Cassandra respects Shiva in some ways, but is also troubled by all of the lives that she’s taken.

Hello, I hope you're feeling good today! Umm I was curious if you want to share some HCs about modern John and Arthur. What aspects would change if they lived in our present days? Or if they woke up a day and were here? :)
Modern AU | Arthur Morgan | John Marston | Headcanons
~~~~~
OMG yes. So I think about Modern AU Arthur and John A LOT. Both in the sense that they actually grew up in modern AU and that’s all they have know and the sense that they have just woken up in a modern world and have to come to terms with what the world is like in 2019.
I’ll just do a set for each of the boys on Modern AU because this post was getting SO long. But pleaseee if you want to hear about 1899 Arthur and John in a Modern world, send me an ask!
John’s HCs are MUCH more fleshed out than Arthur’s and really more of a narrative where as for Arthur I have a huge bunch of ideas as to who he is as a person but nothing super solid for his actual story.
I have SO many more headcanons about these guys and also Modern AU Abigail. If you want to see more, just ask. ♥
~~~~~
A little background on Modern AU Arthur and John. John’s Father died when he was They were both placed in the Foster-care system where they were taken in by Dutch and Hosea; an older couple that decided to foster instead of adopt. Arthur is still 10 years older than John. He is placed with Dutch and Hosea at around the age of 10 and then seven years later John is placed with them as well at the age of 7.
Arthur isn’t an orphan but he was taken away from his bio Father due to abuse and after that his Father spiralled and found himself in prison. His sentence kept getting extended due to bad behaviour and eventually Arthur writes him off when he reaches adulthood, realising he isn’t going to change. Dutch and Hosea adopt Arthur with his Father’s consent right before he turns 18. His mother died due to illness when he was a toddler.
John’s Mother died in childbirth and his abusive Father was killed when John was 6. He goes straight in to Foster-care and is bounced around from house to house due to his troublesome nature. His Foster parents find him challenging and he continues to be replaced until eventually he lands with Dutch and Hosea at the age of 7. After Arthur, they find John and his anxieties/acting out to not be all that much of a handful.
John isn’t adopted when he turns 18 and as a result has a strained relationship with the people he had considered his family for over 10 years. He attends family Christmas and other holidays but ultimately feels out of place.
~~~~~
Modern AU Arthur:
Okay so first thing you need to know about Modern Arthur is he’s a serial dater
A romantic always looking for ‘the one’
But total self-sabotager when anyone promising appears
Think Ted Mosby from HIMYM
He is HOT but he doesn’t really know it
Really low self-esteem
But at the same time weirdly arrogant because he can pretty much get any woman he wants
He has a new partner every couple of weeks
Always brings them to events and puts them in the photos which annoys his friends
When he is roughly 25 he has a bad break up and decides to ‘be single’ for a while
He meets Eliza and has a one night stand
She gets pregnant
He tries to make it work with her but in the end they are too different
They break up and Arthur is a little relieved
He’s a good Dad to Issac
But Eliza moves away with him when he is around 3
So Arthur only see’s him on holidays and when he can afford to fly out for a visit
He is an Artist
Actually makes some decent money off his work
But hates the whole ‘art scene’
Absolutely despises rubbing noses with “pretentious art folk”
But despite that, is really good at schmoozing to get his art recognised
His friends like to remind him that he’s actually really pretentious himself sometimes
But he likes to think of himself as ‘Down to Earth’
He loves food
Always has snacks
Lives off coffee
Has drank dirty paint water instead of his coffee many, many times
Arthur has a really good parental bond with both Dutch and Hosea
He gets along with them both really well and often voluntarily spends time at their house where he grew up
Dutch is an enabler to Arthur’s womanising
He instils the belief in Arthur that when he meets ‘The One’ he will know instantly
Hosea disapproves and encourages him to try and settle down
Not every relationship is perfect but they still work out etc
Arthur’s sibling relationship with John turned to more of a friendship when the later turned 18
He invited John to live with him for a little while, while he was setting up his business
They didn’t live together for long as they got on each others nerves too often
Arthur doesn’t have many male friends
He finds it easier to connect with women in a platonic sense
Besides John, his male friends are his friend’s husbands
(i.e Jake Adler)
Arthur likes to go away for a couple of weeks at a time
Sometimes he tells people where he’s going
Other times he just disappears
But his Instagram alerts his family to the fact he’s still alive
He never goes on extravagant vacations
Often saving enough for a flight and a stay at a hostel somewhere
Sometimes he camps
He uses these trips for inspiration in his work
Often has a huge influx of stylised work, based on where he’s been once he returns home
It gradually returns to his usual art-style
That’s when he realises it’s time to get away again
He feels content in his life and genuinely enjoys living
He actively yearns for more but deep down isn’t sure he actually wants it
He could live like this the rest of his life and not have many regrets
Modern AU John:
As a child, John never really had anything of his own
Never had anything new
Always hand-me-downs
So once he becomes a teen he is incredibly keen to enter the work-force
He’s very excited to spend his first pay cheque on something new for himself
He never flourished at school
Found that he was much better at working
Especially with his hands and machinery
He took on a trade and worked to become a construction worker
When he reaches adulthood and realises he’s going to have to live by his own means he takes a business course
Starts his own company at the age of 18, doing handy-man kind of work
Dutch and Hosea offer him money to grow it
He turns it down as he feels it’s out of guilt
This spurs him on to work even harder
He wants to prove himself
Eventually starts to make enough money to hire staff
Starts taking on bigger clients
Bigger jobs
Grows his company until at the age of 22 he’s got his own small business and it’s thriving
He does well for himself
He lives off Energy Drinks and coffee
Fast food is a must
Often eats in his car at lunch or on his way home from work
It’s lonely
He meets Abigail and they start casually dating
Not long in to their relationship she falls pregnant
John freaks out but recovers well
He doesn’t want his child to grow up like he did
Proposes because he’s young and dumb
They get married really quickly despite people trying to tell them it’s a bad idea
He takes a mortgage on a house and they move in together
Things are good for a while
But once baby Jack comes they go downhill
Abigail is a good Mother but very young and selfish
This is a whole other set of headcanons if anyone is interested, I’ll write them
John steps up as a Father because he has to if he wants his child to have a good life
He flails a lot
Almost drowns a couple of times
Eventually falls in to a good rhythm of work and baby
His relationship with Abigail crumbles
They separate with joint custody
He has a few good friends
He leans on them hard in during his divorce
He sells his house and moves in with a friend for emotional support/help with the baby
Puts the profits from his sale in to his business and grows it further
As a human; he has a lot of flaws
But they are very different from his flaws in 1899
He is full of anxieties and mental health issues
But refuses to work on them
As a Father he feels he is unfit
But he takes it on anyway and is actually a natural
As a husband he was clingy, yet distant at the same time
Wanting attention and then space when it suited him
He is resentful of Abigail for ultimately being the one to end the marriage
Despite knowing it was for the best
He starts dating a friend
He realises what a good, supportive relationship is like
He and Abigail fight often about what’s right for Jack
John grows frustrated with her childishness
Eventually fights for full custody because he feels like Jack isn’t Abigail’s first priority
Doesn’t win due to being at work full-time
Abigail settles on 70/30 because she is also working and knows John can afford a better Nanny than she can
He never confront Dutch and Hosea about not being adopted
Figures they just didn’t want him to be permanent in their lives
They were his parents for 11 years
It stings but he moves on
He’s in denial about how much it affects him
Affects the decisions his makes parenting his son
Chapter 25: Looking
Regulus slammed another book shut. It had been a week since they managed to escape with the cup from the Lestrange Estate, and he’d found nothing about Ravenclaw’s diadem.
“Please tell me that you are having better luck than I am?” He asked, looking across the library at Iset. The day after they’d gotten Hufflepuff’s cup, she’d disappeared to Diagon Alley and reappeared with the strange stone basin that she was currently fiddling with.
Kreacher had found a table in one of the other rooms and brought it in. It still looked strange to Regulus. The biggest change that the library had seen in his entire life was the movement of books from the shelves to the desk.
“It’s hard to say,” Iset said, looking up. “I don’t think we’ll know until we try, but we can test it out soon.”
“Soon?”
“In a couple of hours.”
“Oh,” Regulus gave up on his stack of books and walked over to Iset. The basin in front of her appeared to be one big piece of stone that had a shallow bowl carved out in the middle. There were runes around the edge; Iset had been working on the inscription most of the week. Her other project was sitting in a cauldron next to the stone basin.
“What’s this?” Regulus asked, looking into the cauldron. It looked like water, except when he glanced at it out of the corner of his eye; then it seemed like colors danced on the surface.
“It’s for scrying. You can use water, or any liquid really. However, I found this potion. It’s used for divination. The techniques for scrying and divination are the same, so it might improve scrying as well.”
“The runes as well?”
“Yes.” She had put down her wand. “I started with a scrying pool and I’ve been adding spells to strengthen the potency, range, etc.”
“You’re brilliant.” Regulus leaned over the table to kiss her forehead. A faint pink flush spread across her cheeks.
“Say that if it works,” Iset said, crossing her arms.
“When it works,” Regulus said, leaning closer to her again. “I’ll remind you how brilliant you are.” He kissed her.
Iset was blushing brightly when he pulled away. She turned away, ostensibly to pick up her wand and get back to work, but he knew it was to hide the blush.
“I’m still worried that it won't be enough,” she said. “We can’t be the first person to try and look for Ravenclaw’s diadem this way. We don’t even know what it looks like.”
“Hmm,” was all Regulus replied. He moved away to give her space to work. She was moving her wand very slowly over the stone. Lines appeared in the stone as she moved her wand. She went back over it, to deepen the carving.
“What if we don’t search for the diadem?” Regulus asked.
“What?” Iset looked up with her wand frozen over the stone.
“What if we look for pieces of the Dark Lord’s soul?” Iset’s mouth opened in a silent ‘oh’. “We have two of the Horcruxes. You said we need a connection. I can’t think of a stronger one.”
“Brilliant!” She said, and Regulus let her get back to work. Regulus carefully restacked the books that McGonagall had brought him. He was grateful that he didn’t need to spend more time digging through them. Though he wanted to watch what Iset was doing, he didn’t want to get in her way. So instead, he sat at the desk and dug his sketchbook out of a drawer. Instead of drawing Iset, as usual, he found himself drawing the library. The room was the size of a bedroom but several stories taller than made sense for a house the size of Grimmauld Place; Some long ago Black had used an undetectable extension charm to expand it. Bookcases lined three walls of the room and were stuffed with old leather and fabric-bound tomes. The room was a study in green and brown shadows. The rich brown wood of the desk and bookcases reflected yellow candlelight. Green plush carpet and upholstery evoked a forest when contrasted with the brown wood. He’d always enjoyed the library, but he’d never drawn it.
“Ready for lunch?” Iset’s voice close by startled him.
“What?”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to surprise you. I was just wondering if you wanted lunch.” She leaned over the desk and looked down at his drawing. “You’re a very good artist, you know.”
“Nonsense,” he said, flipping the book shut. “It’s just a hobby.”
Iset seemed to debate her response for a moment before she let it go. “Well, let’s have some lunch. Then we can try looking for the diadem.”
“Why don’t we do that first?” Regulus asked. He wasn’t feeling particularly hungry, and he was excited to actually get a clue as to the location of the Horcrux.
Iset shook her head. “It can be a long and tiresome process. It’s better if we eat first.”
They went down to the dining room. Mrs. Weasley had taken Harry, Hermione, and her own children to Diagon Alley for school supplies, so it was just Regulus, Iset, Sirius, and Lupin. There was an awkward silence as everyone ate the sandwiches Kreacher made for them. In the silence, the room felt heavy, the way it always had. Regulus was glad to escape the room and head back up the stairs to the library when he finished eating.
“Bring the chair over here,” Iset told him as she moved to the basin. “You took divination right?”
“Yeah, why?” He furrowed his brow.
“The process of scrying is more or less the same as looking into a crystal ball. We should try it together. Then hopefully at least one of us will see something.”
Iset set Hufflepuff’s cup on the table, carefully handling it with a handkerchief. Regulus moved so that he was standing on the opposite side of the table as Iset and watched as she poured the cauldron of liquid into the shallow basin. As the liquid settled, rainbows danced along the ripples. It was both beautiful and unsettling.
“So,” Regulus said, trying to remember his divination lessons. “We need to look at the water, uh potion, and empty our minds of everything except the cup.”
“Not the cup, the piece of soul attached to the cup,” Iset corrected. “We may end up having to hold the cup and the locket.”
“Let’s hope not,” Regulus said. He could practically feel the malice coming off of the items. The last thing he wanted was prolonged contact with them. Regulus focused on the cup, and on the malevolence that it exuded.
“It’s horrible,” Iset whispered, “that much darkness coming from a bit of someone’s soul.”
Regulus nodded, afraid that if he spoke, he’d release his focus. It was hard to focus; it was as if the soul was oil, black and slipping out of his grasp. He moved his eyes from the cup to the water. There was nothing, not even the rainbows that he’d seen earlier. Frustration was rising. He kept focusing on the cup, the bit of the soul inside, and it was making his skin crawl.
“Merlin, save me!” Regulus exclaimed, turning away from the pool. His head was starting to hurt.
“Nothing?” Iset asked.
“No,” Regulus knew that he sounded irritated. Iset instinctively leaned away from him ever so slightly, but Regulus noticed. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m not upset with you.”:
“I know,” she said, offering him a small smile. “I told you this was going to be tricky. If it works. Let’s take a five-minute break and try again.”
So Regulus sat in the chair that Iset had told him to bring over. He put his head in his hands. He heard the soft rustle of Iset’s dress as she moved towards him. He felt her perch on the side of his chair and reached out to put an arm around her waist as if to steady her. Her fingers settled on his hair, and he felt tension draining from his muscles as she ran them through his hair. Deftly, she moved shoulder-length strands out of his face, smoothing them out. He looks up at her. Her eyes are soft, and her braid has fallen over her shoulder. Not a single strand of black hair has escaped the braid.
“You never wear your hair down,” he said. He remembered lying with her in the bed and the way her hair felt like silk between his hands.
“It gets in the way of everything,” Iset told him, even though he hadn’t voiced his question. Regulus just nodded and leaned into her hand, which had stilled on his head.
“I’m glad you are here, with me, I mean,” Regulus said. “I couldn’t do all this without you.”
“You could,” Iset said and Regulus was surprised by the confidence in her voice. “But I’m glad we are here together. I’m glad you don’t have to do things alone this time.”
They sat in silence for several minutes until Regulus groaned and let go of Iset. “We should try again.”
They took up positions on opposite sides of the scrying pool again. Regulus looked at the cup, trying to focus again. After several moments, he moved his gaze to the pool. An image skated across the surface and he gasped, he tried to focus on the image, but that made him lose focus on the cup and the image vanished as quickly as it appeared.
“Merlin,” he looked up at the ceiling. “I remember why I hated divination so much.”
Iset just nodded. Regulus wondered if she had seen the image too. He’d probably just broken her focus. “I’m sorry,” he said immediately. “I didn’t mean to distract you.”
“I wasn’t having any luck anyway. Maybe we should get the locket too?” Regulus groaned but nodded. So far, he had avoided being in the same room as both of the Horcruxes at the same time. He didn’t relish the idea of having so much dark magic in one place, but it would probably improve their chances of success. They needed to succeed.
“I’ll be back,” Regulus said, quickly crossing the room and going out to the hall. He made his way to his father’s study, where he had been keeping the Horcrux. Opening the door always made him tense. There was nothing but bad memories in this room. Orion had been a cold and exacting man. Though quiet, where his wife was loud, he was no less cold and no less cruel. The back shelf of the room was decorated with various cursed objects, and Regulus gave them a dark look. The room was stuffy and covered in dust. The carpet even puffed up dust as he walked and he had to fight back a sneeze. Opening the desk, he grabbed the locket with his handkerchief and headed back out. He was glad to close the door behind him. It was a short journey back to the library, where he lay the locket on the table, opposite the cup.
“Ready to try this again?” He asked, trying to put more enthusiasm into his voice than he felt.
Iset nodded. He noticed the determined set of her jaw and knew they were going to be here until this worked. He really hoped it happened sooner rather than later. It was easier to focus on the menacing, slimy sensation coming from the Horcruxes now that there were two of them. It made Regulus’ skin crawl.
When Regulus turned his gaze to the potion, he saw something rippling on the surface. It didn’t quite form into an image. Frustration started to rise, but Regulus bared down on his focus on the Horcruxes. Colors swirled and danced on the potion’s surface until they formed an image.
A pale, snake-like man was walking down a dimly lit hallway. The carpet looked expensive. There was a massive snake slithering down by his feet.
The image of the Dark Lord faded and Regulus’ focus broke as triumph filled him. It worked. But now he had lost his focus and had to start over again. It was easier this time.
The summer sun was shining down on a bustling street. Witches and wizards in a mix of robes and muggle clothes moved up and down Diagon Alley. A boy with messy black hair and glasses was standing in front of Quality Quidditch supplies with a redheaded boy. A dark-skinned girl with messy brown hair was pulling on their sleeves, saying something.
The image broke and swirled and a new one formed.
Hogwarts. The trees of the forest swayed in a gentle breeze and the lake sparkled under the sun. The grounds were empty of students.
The image seemed to ripple and run until the colors came together to form another image.
A snake’s face. Green scales flickered in candle or torchlight. Opening its mouth, the snake revealed large fangs.
A new image.
Diagon Alley again. Outside Florien Fortesque’s ice cream parlor. The messy-haired boy pushed his bangs down to cover the lightning bolt scar on his forehead. His eyes were on the different ice cream flavors, and his hand was in his pocket.
The pale man was standing by a window now. His horrible red eyes are fixed outside the window. The sunlight came through the window, but it did not flatter him. Even in the golden light, he looked cold.
The gates of Hogwarts stood tall and proud. Iron points pierced into the sky. The road leading to them was empty.
The boy again. He was holding a cone stacked precariously with different types of ice cream. He was laughing as his friend tried to balance his own overstuffed cone.
Green scales turned emerald under the summer sun. The snake sought out the pool of sunlight on the marble floor. It curled up on itself, tongue flicking lazily.
The quidditch stands stood tall but empty. Red and gold, green and silver, blue and bronze, yellow and black, the colors were proud and bold in the sun. The wind rippled the grass of the field.
The last image faded and Regulus shook his head as if to clear it. He brought each scene to his mind, trying to commit them to memory. His head was starting to ache, and he fell into the chair. Soon Iset was there too. She moved to sit on the floor, but that seemed wrong. Regulus caught her, motioning that she could sit on his lap. She did, and she leaned against him.
“Does your head hurt as badly as mine does?” she asked him. Read the next chapter on AO3
Draw This In Your Style!
Draw/Recreate This In Your Style, post the original art alongside it (on platforms that support it, elsewhere you can just link back to the original instead), and either tag it with #dtiySparkle or tag me, MysticSparkleWings (xxMysticWingsxx on Twitter) directly and I'll retweet/share/etc. it! No deadline, just create at your own pace!
____
You know, I constantly go back and forth on "celebrate milestones!" vs. "don't be that person that won't shut up about how many followers they have and the numbers and etc." Mostly because I usually find it annoying from other artists, even if I don't find the artist themselves annoying. It's complicated. I know it's important and in many cases helps grow a following further, but it also just gets exhausting, you know? Both to see it and to try to do it.
Still, I've been wanting to make a "Draw This In Your Style" (DTIYS) for a while now, but it didn't seem like the kind of thing to just do on a whim. It felt like there should be a reason for at least the first one, provided it went well enough to make me want to do more. I noticed a few weeks ago that I was approaching 1,000 followers on Twitter* and I saw an opportunity, knowing that 1. It would take me a while to finish the artwork (go big or go home, yes?) and 2. It would take a few days for the numbers to stabilize so that I would actually hold steady at 1,000+ and not be 1,000 one minute and 998 the next. (Followers go up and down like a see-saw over there)
*Thanks exclusively to Art Shares. I'm very sure I'd still have less than 100 if it weren't for those--and please don't be fooled by that number. 1,000 isn't teeny tiny, but in-depth interaction from a handful of people will always mean more to me than zero or minimal-at-best interaction from thousands/millions/etc, and frankly, my interaction over on Twitter is basically non-existent compared to the interaction I get here on dA, which precisely is why I prioritize dA over all other social media. It means more to me; it feels infinitely less passive.
But...I kinda didn't want that to be the only reason for the DTIYS. It just seemed...I don't know, cliche? Not right, somehow. Fortunately, the Twitter milestone happens to coincidence with I think I've finally stabilized around 300 followers on Instagram (after being stuck between 250 and 290 for months, consistently going up and down 2-3 people at a time), and I've also garnered over 400 watchers right here on dA.
The Twitter milestone is technically the biggest, but honestly, the dA one means a lot more to me. I thank each and everyone one of you, my fellow deviants, for thinking my art is worth the watch.
And I especially thank those of you--I'm sure you know who you are, I won't name names just in case anyone's not comfortable with that--that consistently fav and/or comment on my work. Your support and encouragement are why I keep doing this, despite the frustrations I may have along the way and aside from an innate need to create.
Speaking of which, if you're a loyal Sparkler I think now I'll get to the part you might know me best for; the long description of the artistic process!
Like I mentioned before, I noticed the milestone stuff a few weeks ago and thought now would be as good a time as any to get started on a DTIYS, so I started trying to brainstorm something that would be both fun for me to make and fun for others to recreate. I was having a little trouble on this front, so I took a trip to Pinterest and re-visited some boards I use to save potential draw ideas/inspiration on.
I was thinking I wanted to include a fairy since I've been wanting to get back into drawing them more regularly and fairies-via-Winx-Club is where I got my start here on dA and indirectly into getting more serious about my art in general. I was also thinking something with galaxies since those are usually fun to make and are a good way to make an otherwise plain or simple piece more interesting. I didn't want this to be too terribly complicated if I expected other people to draw it, but I also didn't want it to be too boring. And, of course, I was hoping for something I could lean into my mixed-media prowess with.
All that turned out to be quite the balancing act, but after some scrolling, I had some ideas and ended up with a sketch of a fairy in a teacup, with place-holder wings and a place-holder rose on the cup. The wings I knew would be easier to do the lines digitally (even if the final art was traditional, which I was planning on), and the rose I wanted to be slightly more sophisticated than my typical stencil-made roses, which I thought would also be easier to experiment with digitally. I was right on that front, thanks to some of the public domain images on PixaBay.
Beyond that, my original idea was fairly different from what you see here; I was thinking black hair, a fairly vampiric look, for the fairy, more typical butterfly wings, a red rose on the cup, and then an abstract galaxy wash, more watercolor-y and less saturated, for the background. And to be fair, that's still an interesting idea that I might return to at some point, but even as I worked on and finished the digital linework (fully planning to print them and then do what I wished with them traditionally, as has become a norm for me) something in the back of my mind told me that vision wasn't the right one; Not for this project, anyway.
Fortunately, I was a busy enough bee in between working on the lines for this that I partially had to step away from it to meet other time constraints and I could afford to step away from it and have some time to ponder what I wanted to do.
In my pondering, I kept coming back to the galaxy/constellation thing I've been experimenting with lately (Exhibits A, B, and C ). I hesitated at first since I knew for sure I didn't want to do the whole drawing that way and I wasn't entirely sure how to decided what to do with what.
Of course, after thinking about it a bit more, I decided I'd take a risk in doing the background and wings in the constellation style, and then somehow do the rest in a more traditional way. I'd have some more time to think about that while I was re-tooling the wings digitally for said constellation style, after having discovered that made life so much easier during my previous experiments with it.
I'd know from the beginning that I wanted to do metallic accents (most likely silver) on the cup and saucer, which in this case meant I'd need to use either watercolor or heavy-duty mixed media paper for them, and I definitely had to use watercolor paper for the wings/background. The mixed media will work for the galaxy technique, but the colors don't blend quite as nicely and I was concerned about how that might affect the overall look here.
Still, I didn't want to watercolor the fairy herself at least, which left me with a choice of alcohol markers or colored pencils. I was thinking pencils for the hair for texture, markers for the skin for the lack thereof. But I typically don't like using alcohol markers on watercolor paper. The additional texture feels too rough on the nib and it's almost like I can feel the paper soaking up extra ink.
I also thought that doing the background and the fairy on the same piece of paper was asking for a very big watercolor-y mess, so between that and the paper concerns, that led me eventually to deciding to split them up.
And somehow in there, the idea occurred to me that I could get a bit adventurous (read: crafty) and actually separate the various parts of the fairy and cup out a bit and not only solve my paper problem, but also makes things a little more interesting.
After yet more pondering (if you can say nothing else about my art, you cannot say it isn't well-pondered by the time it's finished!) I settled on having the layers as follows:
background/wings (watercolor paper)
back part of the saucer (mixed media paper)
the fairy (with her arm and bit of hair carefully plopped over the next layer; mixed media)
the cup (mixed media)
the front of the saucer (mixed media)
Or at least that was the plan, and if I discovered problems in this plan then I could adjust as necessary.
So I got to work on the background, which was fairly straight-forward. I layered on paint and blended to essentially my heart's content, and then let it dry overnight since it was getting late by the time I finished it, or rather the first layer. I came back to it the next day and layered on some more paint to fix some blending issues and darken the whole thing up some more.
While that second layer dried, I got to making the lines for the additional layers and cutting them out--uncolored for the time being, as I figured the layering would need to factor into that a bit--and setting how exactly they'd fit together. The only modifications to my plans I had to make, which I, fortunately, had the foresight to do while I was cutting, was to leave two little bumps at the "bottom" of the fairy (where her body meets the cup) so that she could sit probably as both in the cup but also with her hair and arm hanging over it. The little bumps were a sort of "grounding" behind the cup to hold the rest of her in place while the other pieces were wedged on top.
I hope that makes sense, it's a little hard to explain without seeing it for yourself.
Anyway. I'd also had the foresight to transfer an outline of the fairy and cup lines onto the background before I started painting, which helped with making sure everything was placed...semi-correctly...on the final piece.
I say semi correctly because despite my best efforts when I went to glue everything together it looked right in-person, but the digital scan would later reveal to me that in fact, the layered bits had all shifted slightly to the left and curved inward a bit more, like a right parathesis: ) But I'll come back to that in a minute.
Once I was convinced my layering gambit was going to work out, then I started toying with colors and ideas for the layers themselves. The clearest idea I had out of the gate was to do the rose in a galaxy style too, rather than just plain watercolor like I'd originally planned (teal for the leaf though because green wouldn't have fit with the rest of the palette and blue would've blended too well); either way, I figured it wouldn't pose much of a problem on the mixed media paper since it's such a small area. The biggest challenge would be the stars, but even then you could say the same thing: It's such a small area that star dispersion with a pen really wasn't that big of a challenge to make look convincingly like random star placement.
I went back and forth a bit on the other colors, but I ultimately decided that I liked the idea of soft purple skin and dark(ish) blue hair, maybe soft pink lips and a little blush, for the fairy herself. And I also decided to do a little warm-gray shading on the cup with markers, as opposed to just leaving it white.
The lips turned out so nicely I was tempted to try doing the blush with the same markers, but I have very mixed luck with marker blush (sometimes it blends nicely, other times I get a nice line despite my efforts), and so I decided to play it safe and do it later with pencils instead. Fortunately, the rest of the skin and the cup (both done with Copics specifically as that's where I most easily found the colors I needed) went nice and smoothly, as is the nature of markers on this mixed media paper. (Seriously; Strathmore 400 series Mixed Media works wonders with alcohol markers for layering and blending!!)
The hair was a little more complicated because of the color I was hoping for, but that didn't matter too much because half-way through I decided to change things up a bit and I added little bits of pink and purple into the mix, intentionally following the rest of the galaxy-ness of what I was doing. It's not much, but I think it was the right choice.
While I waited to make sure the cup was good and dry, I went to splatter town on the now-dry background, as was necessary for the galaxy look, and then used my phone to shine some extra light on the paper so I could see my lines and dots for the wings. And after giving the white gel pen a moment to dry, I then went back in with my PanPastel, as is custom, to make the wings glow. I have also now learned that a blending stump/tortillon is good for blending out the pastel in a tight space, while a dry paper towel or tissue works to semi-remove it if it goes on a bit too thick.
Everything, after drying, was then assembled and attached to the background with some handy-dandy tacky glue which was fortunately fairly quick-drying for liquid glue, stuck fairly well without me having to add a whole lot of it, and also not a sloppy glue mess everywhere.
I did have to carefully go back over some of my lines for the cup and hair after everything was assembled because I forgot to do so over the metallic paint and pencil wax before assembly, but it also worked out okay since a couple of corners for the hair got snipped a little short, so I could sort-of fix it by extended the corner on the paper underneath. (In hindsight this works a lot better in-person; on the undoctored scan the placement looks pretty off or incomplete)
And of course, with everything assembled, that brings me back to what I was saying about the scan earlier.
Like mentioned, everything had shifted a bit during placement and gluing, and I could more clearly see the lines I had missed in that process on the scan. Unfortunately for me, while in-person everything looks relativity fine, on the (undoctored) scan this shifting made the balance feel way off, at least to me. The fairy and cup were too far to the left, meanwhile, the ring wing stuck out too far on the bottom.
I fiddled and fiddled and fiddled with the scan, using the content-aware move tool half a dozen different ways before I conceded it just wasn't going to do what I wanted, and then my next-best idea was the extend the background to the left a bit. In doing that, I discovered the warp tool worked to my advantage for that, and so I decided I'd trying fiddling with it and see where it got me.
It's still not perfect, but it's better than it was. In the end, I used the warp tool to tweak the angle of each part of the wings and that made up for some of the balance problems without also compromising any of the lines (which was the biggest reason why the content-aware tool wasn't working; it kept messing up the lines or other parts of the drawing in the process). At the very least, I was able to do enough that it only really bothers me now when I start looking for the off-balance-ness.
I also ended up doing some minor touches, mostly just smoothing out certain lines and small tweaks, but once the balance problem was finally somewhat solved it was pretty much done. (Aside from, of course, me then also adding the words on top so people know what this is at only a moment's glance.)
The end result, both scan and traditional. I'm really happy with. The piece is plenty interesting to look at, but it's also not too complicated, especially when you break down the individual parts that make it up. (Literally and more figuratively.)
Thus, I can only hope others find it interesting-but-not-too-complicated enough to try their hand at recreating it. Even if no one takes me up on my "Draw This In Your Sparkle Style Challenge though, I enjoyed making this all the same and I'm really proud to share the art itself with you guys.
Hopefully though at least a few people will take a stab at it and I can focus on that and not explode from impatience in regards to various not-really-art-related things I'm currently waiting on.
yoooooooooo your blog gives me life; love your work, you're amazing !!! thank you for existing 🙏🏻 i was hoping to request some deidara alphabet headcanons, for letters l, o, p, and y? but only if you have the time, and interest, of course! thank you 💕
Fluff Alphabet: Deidara
(ask meme link)
hi again! thanks for sending in a request - writing this made me realize I’d been under-appreciating Deidara lol. he’s cute, what can I say. hope you enjoy xx
L = Love Confession: How would they confess to their s/o?
Probably with a beautiful show of art, to be honest.
Deidara’s a bit of a flashy guy (no pun intended I swear), and he’s not above showing off a little to impress you lol. It’d be a good way to gauge whether he actually wants to get involved with you, too. If you aren’t a person who can, at the very least, respect his art (although the best case scenario would be to enjoy and share his beliefs about his art), that would be a deal breaker for him.
So yeah, you’ll get a little C1 demonstration from him, and he’d probably preface it by saying he just wanted to show you a new technique he came up with.
Surprisingly, it’s nothing huge and crazy– the initial clay molds are something rather small but endearing, and he definitely put a lot of thought into it. And the explosions? Very deliberately timed and positioned. Deidara’s a meticulous artist when he has the time to be
And when he asks you what you think, he’d have the cutest grin on his face. Not his usual smirk, but something easy, hopeful, and happy. Maybe even somewhat innocent?? He genuinely looks like sunshine for a moment there
If you respond positively (how could you not, looking at a face like that), then you’ll get the confession. He’d be pretty straight forward about it, too.
“I knew you’d like it, hm. It’s part of why I love you.”
O = On Cloud Nine: What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?
It’s pretty obvious for others, especially to those who are more observant. I don’t know how to explain it except by saying that you’re like his… you’re just his favorite
Like he’s more interested and animated when he’s speaking to you compared to others. Somewhat like with his artwork, there’s a certain note of pride in his voice whenever you come up. And he’d defend you with vigor and without hesitation, both in battle and in simple conversation.
All in all, despite being kind of reserved with the PDA at times (more on that in the next letter), Deidara is too passionate a person to really hide his affection for anyone or anything. He’s basically got passion coming out his ears
P = PDA: Are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?
Deidara is definitely one to brag lol. He can’t help it sometimes. When he’s proud of something, he likes to talk about it
He’s pretty big on physical touch in private or around strangers, just not so much around the Akatsuki (he’s the youngest member and he’s pretty sure a handful of them don’t take him seriously enough already, which is So Rude)
So when other Akatsuki members are there, he uses touch sparingly and deliberately. Maybe he’ll give a firm squeeze of your shoulder as he passes by you, nothing too intimate though
But if they’re not around, he doesn’t care to hold back very much on PDA. Some days you’ll have an arm around your shoulder at like all times lol. If you want a kiss in public, he’s not shy about it as long as you aren’t like straight up making out in front of an audience lol.
Y = Yearning: How will they cope when they’re missing their partner?
Since he’s a member of the Akatsuki, he definitely has to spend long periods of time away from you for missions and such. He’s had plenty of time to get used to it but he still thinks he’s pretty terrible at coping lol
For the first few days, anyway, it’s not that big a deal. He’s just not a person who misses others straight away, it’s not how he’s wired. But eventually it would get to him during an extended absence
Mostly he’s just... upset. He keeps a reign on it pretty well, but his partner can probably tell when he’s really starting to miss you because his sadness quickly gets converted to frustration. He becomes so easily annoyed, and honestly, he turns into a bit of a diva (although if anyone used that word to describe him, he’d be furious lmao)
He knows the distance is unavoidable, though, so he just tries to speed things along. No more traveling by foot, he’ll have a clay bird fly them everywhere. It’s just faster.
“Let’s get this over with already, hm” precedes every fight
If his partner does anything to slow them down, he’ll be extremely pissed and will definitely nag them about it until they get in gear
#deidara#naruto#naruto imagines#I intended to rewatch his fights & start writing this at 8 am#overslept til 10#really didn't think I could finish it in time for the queue lol#I would've just posted it maybe an hour later if I didn't finish but like still. I prefer staying on schedule
WHO IN YOUR OTP... { we doing ships tho b/c idkwhatyourotpsareotl gaeul & yugyeom }
WHO IN YOUR OTP
1- Eats the last slice of pizza and is playfully ignored by the other until they apologize?
That's Yugyeom, I can see him teasing Gaeul like this and she'd totally playfully sulk and ignore him until she'd hear a proper apology. Or he might tickle her until she stops ignoring him.
2 - Gets into more fights with other people? Does the other care for them?
I can't see either of them getting into physical fights; however, they seem to both have a stubborn side that might bring them into "fights with words". Maybe it's because they both read a lot of books and they know of the power of words. But they definitely care for each other if they see them all angry and annoyed because of an argument.
3 - Tries new things that the other recommends and hates them but pretends to like them for the other’s sake?
I don't like this question because I don't think it's healthy to pretend to like something just for someone else's sake, in any kind of relationship. So I know I couldn't bring my muses to force themselves to like something that they actually hate. Anyway, Yugyeom and Gaeul are both bookworms, on the same page. Winks winks.
4 - Snores? What does the other think about it?
Does Yugyeom snore? If he does, Gaeul would be amused by it and record him to later tease him.
5 - Wakes up first? Is there a reason why?
I'd say that on weekdays, both wake up around the same time because of work. And on weekends, it depends of who's more tired but they do enjoy sleeping in and lazying in bed.
6 - Is horrible with technology? Does the other help them out with it?
Gaeul has a clumsy side in her but not to the point where she is horrible with technology. Not sure about Yugyeom, but of course they'd help each other out (after watching them struggle for five good minutes).
7 - Is first to apologize after an argument?
Gaeul. Not because she is always in the wrong when they argue but simply because she is terrified of losing someone else, someone she's close to and has opened up to. Apologies would slip past her lips before she even realizes it. That girl has got some self-work to do.
8 - Is the clean freak? Does the other live like a slob or do they just not care as much about cleaning as the other?
(In which I don't know enough about Yugyeom to reply). Basically, Gaeul's apartment = stacked books everywhere. And two cats.
9 - Falls asleep first? Does the other usually stay up or go to sleep soon after?
It depends of who's more tired, but the other usually goes to sleep soon after unless they're too caught up in a book or writing.
10 - Goes out of the way to impress the other? What do they do? What does the other think?
I think that Yugeom and Gaeul are pretty simple people. They don't expect much of life because they've experienced too many disappointments and false hope and pain. So they're content with what they have - and they even feel lucky to be able to experience it together. But, sometimes, they'd just surprise the other with a spontaneous trip or a random gift. Little things that mean the world to them.
11 - Sings Christmas carols in the middle of summer? Does the other sing-along or are they annoyed?
Gaeul, definitely. She loves Christmas and she's totally ready for it in July, haha. I think Yugyeom might be annoyed by it, no matter how adorable she looks belting out to "Jingle Bells".
12 - Constantly quotes memes/vines? Does the other understand them?
Maybe Yugyeom? If he has lost this little spark when he is reading, I imagine he has been watching a good amount of memes and vines on the internet to distract himself - which Gaeul really doesn't understand.
13 - Pranks the other? What do they do?
Both, oh my god. They're that annoying couple who always find ways to prank each other. Nothing harmful though - a fake spider in between the pages of a book, salt in the coffee instead of sugar etc.
14 - Gets angry for weird/bad reasons? How does the other make it up to them or do they just leave them be?
So far, from what I've been reading about Yugyeom, it seems lile he's got a lot of pent up frustration? About his job, about not becoming an author. So, I feel like eventually it'd impact his mood and have him get angry for minor things. Gaeul would let him calm down, she'd let the storm pass and give him the space he needs. She'd wait until he's the one to come to her and only then would she talk about it.
15 - Calls/Texts first?
It depends, it's never the same one. Gaeul always has a lot of fun/random thoughts to share but Yugyeom never hesitates to shoot her a text first or even call her whenever he feels like it.
16 - Is more jealous? Do they tell the other or not?
Hmm... Yugyeom, perhaps? Although Gaeul can be jealous when it's a bad dah and her insecurities are just yelling at her face. But it seems like Yugyeom has got a lot on his plate as well. They wouldn't tell the other but... I feel like they'd just know when their partner is in a particular kind of mood.
17 - Plans all the dates?
We love equality in this house so, both. Not at the same time, but it's never always Yugyeom because Gaeul also wants to surprise him and plan a full day date and make him happy.
18 - Starts stupid arguments? How does the other deal with them?
Both. It's never harmful or really strong arguments that end up with these two being upset but it's like they both enjoy the challenge. It's like their minds are being stimulated.
19 - Has to explain the joke? Does the other get it immediately after it’s explained?
I think they're on the same wavelength when it comes to jokes so there's no explanation needed. And if it's needed, they get it immediately. Or they'd pretend not to, just to annoy the other. Which leads to a stupid arguments, then a tickle fight. And smooches.
20 - Watches more T.V.? Does the other watch it with them? If not, what do they do?
Yugyeom does. Although Gaeul does love her romantic drama and movies, she has more often than not her head in a book. And if she's not watching TV by his side, then she's reading by his side, shifting position every so often.
21 - Can’t stand 3 seconds without the other?
They are both independent adults who can spend a moment without their lover. They're not traumatized like Yibo and Wonbin.
22 - Is a great artist? Do they draw the other or gift them some of their works?
Both are great writers! They just need to find faith back in their dream and talent!! Though I'm laughing at the thought of them writing fanfictions about each other and offering them afterwards.
23 - Is shameless about anything they say or do? How does the other react?
Well, Yugyeom doesn't seem that shameless, but he does have that kind of honesty that never fails to surprise Gaeul, sometimes in good ways and other times in bad ways.
24 - Still sleeps with a plush? What does the other think?
Gaeul has a plush from her deceased little brother but she doesn't sleep with it. It's kept somewhere in her room - on top of a stack of books. But she has her two cats. I doubt Yugyeom minds them, unless things are getting heated.
25 - Has a better fashion sense?
Nothing against Yugyeom, but Gaeul. She always wears colorful clothes, especially dresses and skirts. She does enjoy jeans and other kind of pants but not as much. In the past it was rare to see her wear dark colors but, after one too many losses, she has gotten more of dull colored clothes. But she always adds a touch of color, usually with her shoes and lipstick.
A glossary of fandom terms that have either been taken from literary criticism (incorrectly) or that I use that are either no longer in use or have... different definitions now.
If anyone has any terms they’d like to see added or words you come across that have confused you, please drop me a line. I’d be happy to add to this whenever. It’ll all be under a readmore so that I can edit it when needed. ^^
Discourse--Literally a discussion, like, the act of discussing. That’s it. More specifically, people will say, “the novel here participates in one of the many discourses on gender” or something like that. Essentially linking one occurrence to a wider conversation. Literature and Media do not exist in a vacuum, but neither can one work make a trend, but I’ll get to that. Just call it wank or meta. Use the words we have, don’t take words from academia, especially when you don’t understand their context.
Romance--One of many genres of fiction. This is a story that centers around a romantic relationship between two or more characters. I could tell you about how all genres are crutches and constructs we assign to make ourselves feel better, but that might be moving too fast. For now, what’s important is what a romance isn’t. A romance is NOT some kind of idealist model that must serve as a positive example for the Youth. That would be Utopian Romance fiction (which is boring because stories need conflict, but that’s my own opinion on the matter). A romance only needs the major plot conflicts to hinge around the romantic (as in not platonic, this could be love or lust or some combination thereof) relationships between its characters. Pride and Prejudice is a romance. Captive Prince is a romance. The Foxhole Court, while containing a romantic subplot, is not a romance. Harry Potter is not a romance. A story can have romance without being a romance. Compare romantic comedies with action movies, as an example. But, don’t think that a romance can’t be tense or unhealthy or whatever. Fifty Shades is also a romance, remember. If you wrote out the Joker and Harley Quinn’s story, only focusing on them, their story would be a romance. It’s more complicated than that, obviously, and there’s nuance, but I think you get the picture. Regardless of your moral views on the love depicted, a romance is nothing more or less than a story about the development of a romantic relationship.
Fetishization--I hate seeing this word thrown around. This literally means that something has been made into a fetish object on a cultural level. You can have the fetishization of purity in American culture, for example. And you can have the fetishization of homosexual relationships in pornography intended for heterosexual audiences. However. A single work of fiction is not fetishizing anything. It may contribute to an overall trend, but this is not a word to use for single entities. This is a cultural trend word. Sure, it can be used for subcultures, but whenever I see this word used, it’s used to mean that some work of fiction or other is bad for displaying a queer sexual relationship in any kind of (perceived) perverse way. Please stop using this word incorrectly. As a kind of burgeoning critical theorist (i.e. English grad student), it is incredibly frustrating. You’re using words you don’t understand in ways that undermine the hard work being done by people in my field. Unless you’re going to read Marx and Lukacs and learn what the word “reification” means, I think you should use another word. In most cases, what is meant is that some group people don’t like are showing an interest in something perceived as not belonging to them, whether that’s true or not. I think if we unpack that a little, we can all find better ways to phrase things. Fetishization is an accusation thrown around, not the analysis it’s meant to be. And, frankly, it needs to stop.
Normalization--This is thrown around so often I hardly know where to begin. This is not a word that can be used for a single object, again. This is a word meant for trends. For example, we could talk about the fact that male violence in our culture is normalized and so no longer taken as seriously as it should be. A fictional work depicting something you don’t like in a way you perceive as positive and uncritical does not mean that it’s normalizing it. A single crime procedural does not normalize crime. You could say that the trend of always showing cops to be in the right, no matter the extreme actions they take, normalizes the liberties they take in the real world, making it difficult to speak out against police brutality and other such abuses. But again, that’s the genre as a whole--procedural cop dramas could all contribute, but one of them is not going to be normalizing on its own. That isn’t how that works. Just say that you find whatever it is unpleasant to read because of X or Y trope. Or talk about how the TROPE is normalizing something. That’s totally legitimate. The trope of X normalizes Y behavior in Z culture/situation/etc. and this is harmful because W.
Romanticization--This does not mean that something bad is shown in a romantic light. This is another big trend word. Cultural myths about heterosexual marriage and related gender roles contribute to the romanticization of domestic abuse. A single work of fiction depicting an abusive relationship in any kind of perceive positive light is not romanticizing abuse. Cultural narratives about women needing to be convinced can romanticize the act of rape, especially from the male perspective. One work of fiction cannot do this. It has to be on at least a genre level, if not cultural or societal. Again, subcultural too, but you have to make the argument apply outward. The BL/Yaoi trope of having a Seme character force an openly reluctant Uke character into sex romanticizes sexual assault. One BL using the trope can contribute to it, but it isn’t romanticizing anything on its own. It’s not powerful enough to be capable of that.
Wank--The word once used to describe what is now called “discourse.” It’s usually a circle jerk of complaints about some fandom or another or the people in it. Every example of so called discourse I have ever seen was actually just wank wearing a new hat. Don’t put on airs or borrow credibility. Call a spade a spade.
Meta--Analysis on a series or character. Some of these are better reasoned than others, but the only way to truly rate them is in how well they use their evidence (and how much evidence they have) to support whatever claim they make. These are often essays, but can be a couple paragraphs, sometimes with pictures as evidence along with quotes from the source. Some “discourse” falls into this, but only very rarely. Most people call meta either meta or analysis instead.
BNF--Big Name Fan. This is THE person in your fandom, generally an artist, occasionally a fic writer or other content creator. You’ll know them when you see them. This is the person everyone follows. Their headcanons are so widely accepted that they almost always become fanon (whether you like it or not). Some of these people are super nice and use their powers for good. Others can become divas, mad with the power the fandom has given them. Regardless, there is almost always drama brewing around them (whether they like it or not, unfortunately). I recently saw some commenting on people actually asking other fans for permission to hold certain headcanons. Someone with that power is a BNF. That is a TRADEMARK of a BNF. Their fandom credibility and respect is so high that people see them as some kind of authority figure. Be wary of people who go along with this. They’re not to be trifled with, and frankly, it’s safer not to engage.
TPTB--The Powers That Be, otherwise known as the writers/producers/creators of any given series. These are the people that create Canon and produce Word of God.
Canon--Anything that explicitly happened in the confines of a series. Basically, the events of any given series in whatever form the standard is. I.E. episodes of a TV show, books in a book series, etc.
Fringe Canon--Works that are connected to the series in question, but not part of the standard form. Often includes movies, novelizations, guide books, etc. Can be considered canon, but isn’t something every fan will see/have access to, so can’t really be considered The Canon. Can also includes things that are implicit in the text, so something that can be argued in meta but that not everyone will agree on.
Word of God--Something said by TPTB that remains outside of canon. I.E. interviews, panels, and other things said at conventions or for PR. Common mantra, “PR is not showrunning” meaning that Word of God often has little to do with what happens within the series. Example: Some sub-textual evidence of Dumbledore being gay does not make his being gay canon (it makes it fringe canon, imo). Rowling saying that he was gay in an interview is here considered Word of God. You can take it or leave it, because no one in the series says the words “Dumbledore was gay” or any other variation that would make it explicit canon.
Headcanon--Something that you decide about a character. This isn’t canon and often has no strong basis in canon. It can include sexuality, gender, religion, favorite color, anything not covered by canon. You can also have headcanons that contradict canon.
Fanon--Headcanons that have become Too Powerful. These are things, good or bad, that have been accepted by a probably absurd number of people. Some of these can be great, especially when the series has some seriously bad writing, but if you find yourself disagreeing, this can be the worst thing you ever have to deal with. Especially when people who subscribe to it insist on its being canon...
Ship--Any feasible romantic relationship, canon or non-canon. There are of course platonic variants, but those are usually specified (broship, brotp, etc.). Most often two people, but more recently polyshipping has come into vogue. To Ship (v.)--For me, this does not apply to canon ships no matter if I like them or not. Shipping is transformative. To me, more than anything, shipping (as a verb) means you consume or create transformative media centered around that relationship (most often non-canon or not explicit canon, but could include canon, it just needs to be an active not passive interest in the relationship).
Canon Ship--The series endgame, usually (but not always!) straight. This is an explicit couple. They are in a relationship. They kiss (or something) on screen. You can still take it or leave it, but that doesn’t stop it from being canon.
Rare Pair--This is a ship that has some basis in canon, but is extremely unpopular. Some people include anything with less than a certain number of fic on Ao3, but it varies by fandom. I’ve been into rare pairs with less than 10 fic written for them, so anything around 500 still seems like quite a bit in comparison. Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV), but you’ll know it when you see it.
Crack Ship--These people have probably never spoken. There is no reason for them to be in a relationship other than the fan’s preference (often aesthetic or story-related). A crack ship is often random and completely baseless. A crack ship is not simply a ship that won’t be canon. Most ships will never be canon. This goes beyond that into the ridiculous. As a recent example, Keith x Zarkon would be a crack ship, while Keith x Hunk is perfectly reasonable (if rare).
Multi-shipping--Shipping characters together without a strong preference for one combination over another. For example, shipping your fave with every possible romantic partner, not just one (or more in a polyship). This includes Everyone x Character type things, not just “I could ship them with literally anyone.” Both count.
OTP--One True Pairing. The ship you love above all others, canon or not. For me, I have exactly one of these per fandom, but I know other people use it differently now. This used to mean that you ship the thing exclusively. You might like art for other ships with the characters in this OTP, but you’re not that into it. This used to be THE ship. The characters in this OTP were not shipped with others, and other relationships were used for jealousy or plot reasons, not usually because you enjoy the other ships. This is the ship you go to war about.
OT#--Same as above, but there are more than two people involved. So, the one polyship you hold above all other ships (poly or not).
BrOTP--Platonic version of the above. These are the ride or die friendships of the series. You don’t see them as in love, but they absolutely love each other. There’s devotion and loyalty and affection--or you just think their friendship is the best/greatest/funniest and you don’t see them ever ending up together romantically. You want these characters to be BFFs, not lovers.
art direction and detective pikachu
I’ve seen vague posts and had short conversations about this with friends, but I really want to write it out.
Most of us are pretty excited about the Detective Pikachu movie, including myself. It looks like a fun, interesting, and especially unique Pokemon movie and I will most likely be seeing it when it comes out. However, I frankly won’t be able to enjoy it to the fullest due to one thing in particular: its art direction.
What do I mean by that?
I mean that the art direction is ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Art direction is, to me and many others, the most important part of any project. It’s what ties everything together within a world, it’s what makes a world interesting. Visually appealing, unique, and consistent art direction is everything. It’s what first draws someone’s attention. If the art direction in a show, a movie, a video game, any visual thing, doesn’t come together, if it isn’t consistent, it ruins an experience. And sometimes even that isn’t enough.
In video games especially (and also quite commonly in movies now) the art direction might be consistent but it’s...not much else. For some reason, a lot of [mostly Triple A and larger “indie”(?)] video game companies have decided that “art direction” means “make it look as realistic as possible”. And I’ll tell you what; that? Is boring as hell. Same with movies. It’s why I’m not interested in most “live action” movies, whether they be comedy, action/thriller, romance, or any other combination of genres. They’re just visually boring.
What’s really frustrating to me about this is that you can have realistic graphics/visuals and still have visually appealing and/or unique art direction. (I.E. Video Games: Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead Redemption | Movies: The Matrix (I guess works as an example for this?), World War Z, Mad Max (from what scenes/images I’ve seen of it lol))
With Detective Pikachu, the art direction takes an obviously realistic route, given the fact that it’s, you know, live action. And it’s certainly a unique direction. But the problem here is that the art direction just hasn’t convinced me in the slightest that those Pokemon are real animals, all in the same universe.
And what do I mean by that?
If you told me that Pokemon like Charizard, Bulbasaur, Lickitung, Mr. Mime, etc. were “real” animals I’d say, okay, sure, why not? They look like actual animals in that universe, more or less. Now, what do those Pokemon have in common? Why do I see them as fitting in within that world?
They don’t have fur. And that’s really the thing I want to talk about here in regards to the movie’s art direction. The Pokemon with fur don’t work.
We’ll start with the star Pokemon: Pikachu. Pikachu has been described since its creation to be a “mouse Pokemon”. A rodent. However, when I see what Pikachu looks like in this movie, I don’t see "mouse”, I see fluffy plush toy-thing come to life. I also see “cat”.
The way his fur is rendered isn’t that of a mouse or really any small (or many larger) rodent that I know of. The fur is too long, too soft, too plush. His face looks more like a cat than it does some kind of rodent. The nose and mouth are feline in nature, and that’s strange to me.
That’s not a “mouse pokemon”. It’s not a bad design, no, and it’s certainly cute. But “mouse pokemon”? That’s what Pikachu is and what it always has been, and for the artists to simply ignore that doesn’t feel right to me. It also just doesn’t look right to me.
here is a picture of a mouse. It has much shorter, more wiry and flatter fur that follows the form of its body instead of sticking out like it does on Pikachu. THIS is what I always imagined Pikachu to look like were it to be “real”. It’s what the cartoon always looked like. The only longer fur to ever really be shown on Pikachus is a tuft of fur on their heads (See: Sparky). Never have I thought of Pikachu being fluffy in any way before. Its character design never ever told me that.
When I see the DP Pikachu I don’t see an animal that exists as an animal in that world. It doesn’t look like a real animal. It just looks like a really fluffy toy.
Also the tail?
I’m not really sure what’s going on with that fur. But anyway-
How about we talk about Growlithe.
My first response to this was “Um.” My second was “is that supposed to be a dog?”
I mean I guess it kind of looks like a dog. But more as if you described what a dog looked like to someone who had never seen a dog and then told them to draw it.
Growlithes are really cute pokemon, but these? These aren’t cute. They look dirty. The fur lays on the body weird, the longer fur on the head especially confuses me. The fur doesn’t travel along the body the way a dog’s fur does. Even a dirty dog. It’s stiff, chunky. Please give them a bath.
Also apparently this is what Arcanine looks like?
I don’t remember seeing this in a trailer, and googling showed me like, DP themed pokemon cards??? No clue. But regardless, this looks okay! The head/snout shape is a little off, but overall it LOOKS GOOD! The way the fur looks here, how it shapes and falls over the body, that’s what it should look like. Why couldn’t Growlithe look more like like this? Why can’t Pikachu look like this? They don’t even look like they belong in the same movie.
Next: Pyduck!
Yeah That’s A Duck.
At least they didn’t give it fur, I guess. But they did their best to make it look like they did.
My biggest issue with this is that it doesn’t look like a water bird. They just took Psyduck and made it “real”, badly. I mean, its name is Psyduck for Pete’s sake, at least try to make it look like a duck. It doesn’t even have to look like an adult duck. If it looked more like this in face/feather texture it’d be fine
And that’s probably what it’s SUPPOSED to look like. A young duck. But instead they gave it short stubby feathers that look too much like fur and a much too thick bill (even compared to the original cartoon design).
Last one I want to talk about because if I continued with other pokemon Snorlax,Flareon,etc I’d be writing for like three hours: Aipom
good christ was is that thing
You’re telling me that that’s an Aipom. That thing. Is an Aipom.
Not only does it not look like an Aipom in anything but color, it doesn’t even look like a monkey. And what’s up with its teeth?
If they wanted to convince me that this thing is a real animal within this universe living alongside all these other animals they should have:
1. Actually used monkeys as references when designing it? Because they obviously didn’t
2. Given it, hands?? And not weird nubs??? Nubs don’t work on monkeys in a realistic setting what the hell it looks deformed
3. Not...given is perfectly straight, shiny, white human teeth.
All those things look fine on its original cartoon design, but LORD in heaven this thing is a absolute monstrosity.
The thing about all these and many of the other furred pokemon (Snorlax being a REALLY big culprit) is that the artists just...didn’t look at real life animals enough. They clearly focused on just the Pokemons’ cartoon designs, took those, and “made them real” while making the minimum amount of changes. You can’t just...take a cartoon and make it real. That never works.
All of these different designs work when in context of the shows or the games because the shows and the games have a coherent art direction made specifically for the media they’re presented in. They were never meant to exist in a realistic setting like this.
It always requires some kind of adaptions, some changes, adjustments to the original design, just something when making a cartoon look real. And they didn’t do that here. And the best part about all this?
They got RJ Palmer (website linked in source) to work on the project. RJ is an amazing artist/illustrator, one of my favorites, who is probably best known for his “realistic Pokemon”. His stuff has been reposted a few dozen times on this website alone, with or (usually) without credit, and the majority of pokemon fans have probably seen at least one piece.
The most influence he’s had with these movie designs that I’ve seen has been the Charizard. I saw that Charizard in the trailer and knew it was RJ’s. But if not for that Charizard (and the fact that he said he worked on this movie of course), I would have never known he had any part in this.
Compare the above to his art that I’m about to show you (I specifically chose Pokemon appearing in the movie for convenience’s sake, but I highly recommend that you check out his other realistic Pokemon art as well), and tell me that, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think that this guy worked on this movie.
Just to name a few.
And yeah, obviously I don’t, and never will, expect Nintendo/Game Freak to go this far. But at the same time, if you’re going to get THIS artist to work on your Pokemon movie, the least you could do is make it LOOK like he worked on the gosh darn movie!
The art direction he has in his work is beautiful. All of these creatures look like Pokemon while also being influenced and actually looking like real animals. And following that more with the movie’s art direction would have done nothing but improve it. It certainly would have been more convincing for me and many others.
I obviously don’t want them to look exactly like RJ’s artwork, but the designs do need to be more uniform, and following the practices RJ clearly does would have helped that.
All that said, RJ is rightfully excited and proud of this project. It’s looking like it’ll be a wonderful movie.
I just wish the art direction was better.
#pokemon#detective pikachu#I'm sure I'll enjoy this movie but I just wish I could enjoy it MORE#character design
Hey, just dropping by to ask how life has been lately -- how are you holding up? It seems like you've been kinda better nowadays but I wanna make sure. So how have you been? Is there anything special you wanna talk about, whether it's good or not?
You know... anon. This is probably one of the more heartwarming asks I’ve gotten in a while. Unprovoked, earnest want to hear how the person behind the blog - past SNK - is doing. Like a request to hear more of the “personal” tagged posts I make. That’s just so touching to me. I have the feeling that people who are interested in me, are so at least partially because I have a connection to SNK; that if I dropped out of the fandom, I’d be an instant unfollow (not that there’s anything wrong with that - but there’s something special about feeling like someone cares past their own interests - “forget about SNK, I just wanna hear how you’re doing” JPHA anyone?) So thank you. When I saw this yesterday, I had the instant thought that it was probably from my best friend, and the only reason I cast that idea aside, is because he could just ask me on messenger haha. Anyways! Anon, I will tell you how I’ve been doing! Someone asks me “how are you”, and I’m just jumping right in and replying honestly, haha! (Under the cut, because this will be long; life updates are usually long, ya know)↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓
You’re right, I’m really good! This time, last year, I had just made a suicide pact with myself; I was so exhausted I was done fighting for myself. I said “someone’s gotta help me. But if nobody does, or nothing has changed within the time SNK is over, I’m calling it quits and offing myself”. And I meant it. I’ve had so many hard periods like that, and I’m running out of lives. I thought “next time will be game over”. That pact does NOT still stand. But it did for the better part of 2017. I can’t remember when it changed. Oh, wait, I do: the moment I gave myself the out, I felt so much relief washing over me. Not having to worry about the pathetic failure future I had ahead of me, not having to worry about the education I was too sick to complete, having to acquire a house without the means somehow... All worries about the future were lifted off me. And I had an out. It probably sounds really strange, but as soon as I’d decided to die (unless life worked itself out, aka win-win/good life - escape from bad life), life felt more bearable. I was still having a bad depressive period, so I was still not good, but I guess the pact nullified all the stress and anxiety connected to the future. When I accepted having none at all, anything else started feeling like a pluss once I decided not to die after all. The problem with “someone else has to fight for me”, though, is that apart from my parents (who can’t really do much since this is internal and they aren’t professionals - although boy did they try, bless) nobody did. I mean, I have you guys to love me, but in my every day life, who could fix me? Coincidentally, in this very same time frame, I was suddenly rejected further help from the mental health organ and I just... had no choice but to fight harder than ever just to get the amount of help I’d gotten before. It’s a big messy ordeal that took almost a year to fix. Complaints to file, waiting, more waiting, more stops to visit, etc... Basically, my notion of “being too exhausted to lift another finger for myself” was tested, and thanks to pure outrage, I was able to fight to win my right to help back. I’ve talked about it before so I won’t repeat that stuff. But the fact is, once the heaviest darkness lifted (I have recurring depression, so it just comes and goes in waves) towards the end of 2017, I carried with me an exercised ability to fight that I didn’t have going into the year. And at some point,... I don’t know how, but I was just so strongly set on fighting, fighting, fighting. I think about Armin and how he never stopped moving. He had his moments of weakness, where he thought he had no more to give, but at the end of the day, he’d be further along than when the sun rose. And I was doing the same. Because my roomie was moving at the start of 2018, I had to start thinking of how to move forward as well. I’d grown complacent in the apartment we rented together, but with him, it was too comfortable just to stay in that place mentally and in life. Just in time, I had a rude awakening to the fact that I also depended too much on other people. They were my pillars, and if they crumbled, I didn’t hold on my own. *sigh* Basically, I learned a lot in 2017, and grew a lot. At the very end - thankfully after the depression was over - I had to do a sudden crash course in how to find my own legs to stand on again, and how to close off my heart so it wasn’t so vulnerable. I went through the ice king stage of thinking I’d never let myself care about anyone else again, but I’ve found a good middle ground where I’m able to care about others but also not needing them to care about me back. This is all a long story that I don’t care to tell because it’s trivial, but also still affects me actually. But I grew a lot on it, so I’m thankful for the experience.
The TL;DR of 2017 is that after deciding I was too exhausted to fight anymore, fate forced me to fight harder than ever, and I learned a lot thanks to perfectly timed challenges, ultimately allowing me to enter 2018 a stronger person. The turning point was still the 7th of December: my tattoo. It’s of Armin’s name, for those that didn’t know (I posted it here so just search “tattoo” on my blog if you wanna see). I’d wanted to tattoo his name on my arm for quite some time, but I was scared. Because I knew that if I had his name on my arm, I could never dishonor him by killing myself. Having the tattoo would thus be my official declaration of giving up suicide as an option (ever!). Now, that’s a scary thought to someone who lives off the relief that having an opt out gives... But as time went on, and the warrior spirit had found a home in my heart, I slowly turned from fearing it, to needing it. Eventually, I called my dad and basically said “I need an appointment asap”, and he hooked me up with his tattoo artist friend. The idea came to me when I realized that despite any kind of depression, whenever I thought about Armin, any other feeling would be forgotten for a moment, as I was reminded of the love I feel for him, the motivation he gives me, and so many more good feelings. Thinking about him basically causes an explosion of warm complex joy within my chest. It spreads through my body and I always smile. So my thesis was that if I tattooed his name on my arm, and I hold my phone in my hand 24/7, I’d see his name all throughout the day, every day, and thus my depression would be repelled by this overwrite happiness all! the! time! And, anon? Thesis turned law; it works! It’s gonna be 4 months since the tattoo now, and I’ve only felt suicidal 3 days since then - and although I cal tell my body is ready to head into another depressive period, I’e managed to fight it back 4 times (4 attacks that all lasted about a week, but in the end, I managed to fight it off). It’s like I’m a werewolf, and every once in a while, the full moon is back and I struggle to stay human - and I’m managing, much thanks to a new sigil on my skin, keeping the beast caged.
Now, it would be a lie to say that the tattoo is the only reason, though: in wake of my change, and with this new intense fighting spirit, I also made a resolution to try something new: refuse to be sad. You know how people say smiling will trick the brain to think you’re happy? It sounds stupid as hell, but I finally decided that you know what?, it doesn't hurt to try. I’m gonna insist that I’m happy, even if my brain says otherwise. Fake it till you make it. And it’s working - a little wavering included, but who isn’t sad from time to time? Because my capacity to do things has been gravely weakened, though, I’m on semi-welfare now, though. It’s a kind of welfare where they haven’t accepted your application for welfare yet and you get like a tiny allowance every other week to live off of instead (not meant for a permanent basis, as it’s not nearly enough - usually given to people who are between jobs for a month or two, just to get by). I don’t have the money to buy a house, but I’ve been moving for so many consecutive years that it’s jeopardizing my mental health so I’m trying something new: I moved back with my parents, and I’m currently trying to figure out what the next step is. I want to get a house somehow, so I have a permanent base to grow off of. I know that will take a lot stress off me to focus my tiny quota of strength on something else (like figuring out what to do about education/work). But since I don’t have the means, I can’t get a regular type of loan. There is a special kind you can get if you’re on welfare, so I’m currently applying for welfare, but to apply, I need to do a lot of tests to show where my ability level lies, but I’m not able to do them so I need to get papers from doctors to confirm that. I had already “proven myself” but then I lost my psychologist, case worker and house doctor all at once, so I have to spend about a year extra to re-prove myself. And then I can apply if they say I can apply, and then I have to wait for a yes or a no, and then work from there... So you see, right now, my fate is in others’ hands. I’m basically in a limbo of waiting, then doing some sort of meeting, then waiting for it to process, so I can meet someone else and wait again. I’m currently waiting for my caseworker to answer to request to meet her so I can ask how my case is coming alone since i haven’t heard from them in over a month... It’s quite... frustrating. But I’m a professional when it comes to dealing with these things, since I’m over a decade deep in this sh-.
In the meantime, though! I am working hard to keep my mental stability in check! And I’m doing that by setting monthly goals, and starting every day with breakfast and writing down daily goals! It helps me structure my days and I’ve gotten so much done this way! It’s helping me in all sorts of ways! And although I don’t have a lot of material things to boast with, I feel more successful now than I ever have, because I’ve done another huge leap in personal growth and I’m growing more and more apt to tackle life. Just wait. I might not have a lot now, but when we do tally in twenty years from now, I’ll have the earthly goods that my peers have, and a more developed psyche on top of that! I’m on the path to finding true happiness, and that’s so much more important than following the highway to wealth.
Ah, sorry for how long this got... But yeah... I have a lot of small joys every day that I’d like to share. My journey is really making me happy. But I’m afraid I’m just boring or annoying people. I get the occasional “write what you want” ask, but I can’t shake the feeling anyways. I’m working on getting better at sharing, though. Thank you for giving me the push to write this. Take care, anon!
The Definitive Guide to Designing Fantasy Maps
There's nothing like cracking open a fantasy book to find a map on the inside cover. It's like a promise: a promise of a new world to explore, a new story to love, a new escape to lose yourself in. Maps can help readers by providing content, establishing aesthetic, and clarifying confusion. Maps can help readers keep track of storylines and characters, particularly when they're off in different places doing different things all at once. Maps can be helpful to us writers for the same reason. They can help us keep track of the threads of our story, or dive deeper into the worlds we've created. Designing the physical aspects of a world, however, can be intimidating. Hopefully, this guide will help.
First off, if you want to skip all this artistic design nonsense, this Fantasy Map Generator might be of use to you. This generator lets you do a little customization, but otherwise basically designs your map for you.
For those of you who are feeling a little more adventurous, or who want to create a world that is entirely your own, read on. But first, a few disclaimers. This guide isn’t about how to put pen on paper and draw a map. If that’s what you’re looking for, This Guide or This Guide may help. Instead, this guide is going to be a brief overview of the cartography and geology needed to create a believable world. That being said, this guide is not going to cover every topic. It’s also an extreme oversimplification, which means that there will be some generalizations. Your map doesn’t have to be perfect, just good enough to keep someone from looking at it and thinking, “That doesn’t make any sense.”
Finally, I’m not going to do your research for you. If your world is unique in ways that may alter the climate or geography (two suns, a ring of active volcanoes, etc.), that’s research that you’ll have to do on your own (though, at the end of the guide, I’ll provide you with some resources that may help).
Basics of a Map
Legend - a guide, usually tucked into a corner, telling you what symbols on a map mean. Maybe human cities are denoted with a square while elven cities are a diamond (looking at you, Paolini). Maybe mountains housing dragons are represented differently than regular mountains. You want to clarify any questions readers may have about the map.
Title - the name of your land, your world, whatever it is.
Orientation and Compass - Most maps include a compass with north pointing toward the top of the page
Scale - This is if you want to get really serious with your map. Including a scale (a ratio allowing you to shrink the map to a reasonable size, like 1 inch = 1 mile or the like) can help you keep travel times consistent, because nothing is more frustrating than a fantasy book where the characters spend a whole month traveling from point A to point B, then make it from B back to A in three days. Here's a good article about fantasy travel.
Climates
This isn't directly related to the act of mapmaking, but it's important to keep in mind when designing a world. The major influences on climate are: lattitude, winds, oceans, land-sea distributions, and mountains. Most important of these it latitude: the further you are from the equator, the colder it gets. That's only the beginning, though. Climates from region to region have a lot to do with wind circulation; generally, north of the equator, prevailing winds (which carry moist air from ocean regions inland) move in a clockwise direction. South of the equator, they move counter-clockwise. When these winds meet in the middle at the equator, the air rises. When it coos, it forms clouds and rain, which is why you tend to find tropical conditions closer to the equator.
How do you apply this to fantasy mapmaking? Don't sprinkle various climates around randomly. The first fantasy map I made, in high school, had a desert far north with the tundra, a rainforest not far west of it, and a continental climate much like the American midwest down closer to the equator. Make sure that what you're doing makes sense geographically. (On that note, transition gently. Don't make a desert go straight into a forest, or a marsh straight into rolling plains).
For more information on biomes and regional climates, check out This Guide.
The Ocean's Effects on Climate: (not exhaustive, just simplified) Strong ocean currents sometimes redistribute warmth to places located at higher latitudes. For example, the Gulf Stream begins at the Gulf of Mexico and deposits warm water around the UK, giving the UK milder winters.
Land-Sea Distribution's Effect on Climate: Coastal regions generally experience mild, humid maritime climates (cool summers and mild winters), while the interior regions of large landmasses tend to experience continental climates (seasonal temperature varies widely and there's little precipitation).
Mountains' Effects on Climate: Locally, mountains cause air to rise and precipitation to form, meaning climates directly around mountains tend to be wetter than surrounding areas. Overall, mountains redirect air flow. In fact, one of the main causes of deserts are mountains. A "rain shadow desert" occurs when prevailing rain-bearing clouds are blocked from carrying rain to a region because of mountains (see: the southwest corner of the United States).
That's all I have room for in this guide, but if you want to delve deeper into the world of climate-making, I recommend you check out Geoff's Climate Cookbook, which was specifically written to help writers create climates for their fictional worlds. Actually, just see his entire General Guide. It's better and more detailed than any guide I could ever write.
Land Masses and Tectonic Plates
I'm mostly going to skip over tectonic plates. Unless you're N.K. Jemisin and you're writing about Broken Earth, you don't need to know where your tectonic plates are located. Just remember that if you're designing a world with multiple continents, they should roughly fit together due to continental drift. Also know that tectonic plates move 3 ways: side to side (which causes earthquakes), shifting away from each other (which causes continental drift), and pushing towards each other (which causes volcanic activity and/or the creation of mountains).
With mountains, new mountains come up in the center, pushing older mountains further out. This is why there are usually "foothills" to mountains-- the older mountains get weathered and worn down, rounding their tops and decreasing their size. New mountains tend to have jagged tops. Tectonic plates also explain why mountains generally form in chains (while Tolkien's "Lonely Mountain" is cool, it's not very likely). Mountain ranges that run along a coast may continue into the water as islands. Islands can also be formed by volcanic build up-- these would also be located along plate lines.
Rivers and Lakes
First of all: rivers never diverge as they flow toward the sea, they only converge. This is a mistake a lot of fantasy mapmakers make. Rivers tend to start from high in the mountains, flowing from areas of high elevation to low elevation (usually the sea). Water is lazy and always takes the path of least resistance. This means it'll put in as little work as possible, letting gravity do the work for it. Think of raindrops on a window. The raindrops never move in a straight line, and they often join with other raindrops and become stronger. So, too, it is with rivers. They never move in a perfectly straight line because the ground is never perfectly flat, and they often meet and join with other rivers on their way.
All I have to say about lakes for the purpose of this guide is that they only ever have one outlet. If they have more, it's for a very specific reason (like flooding), and it never lasts for very long.
Placing Cities
While placing cities on your map, you have to consider the surrounding terrain. Humans need food and water to survive, and they'll settle in places where they can easily meet those needs. You need a way to get water in and waste out; don't put cities in the middle of deserts unless you have an explanation for it.
Regarding roads: people are lazy, so roads are usually straight unless the terrain gets in the way (never perfectly straight, though. It's impractical). Roads don't meander like rivers do.
Map Aesthetics
I said this guide wasn't going to be about drawing maps, and it's not. But there's an important design aspect that overlaps: aesthetic. If you look at different fantasy maps, you’ll notice that they’re all aesthetically different. Each map gives its own insight into the world it depicts. Isaac Stewart, who designs maps for Brian Sanderson and many other authors, says he designs his maps "as if they were artifacts of the world they depict." He recommends perusing the David Rumsey Map Collection to find a map that aesthetically fits the feel of your world and then using it as inspiration. In the collection, you can filter the maps by date and location to better help you find the perfect inspiration.
