Beer of the Week 251 - 7/4/2018: Almanac Beer Co. Nectarine Cobbler

*NOTE: As I was celebrating America so hard last week, I forgot to post this BOTW.  Week late, but never without good beer.*

Happy Independence Day!  To celebrate the occasion, I went for a beer as American as, well nectarine pie.

Nectarine Cobbler is Almanac’s version of dessert in a glass.  They started with yellow nectarines from Blossom Bluff Orchards, grown in high-summer along the banks of King’s River in California’s Central Valley.   Four pounds of juicy stone fruit was added to each gallon of sour blonde ale and aged in oak barrels.  They spiced the blend with cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and vanilla bean to recall the aroma of a freshly baked nectarine cobbler resting on the windowsill.

Posted @withregram • @colvinology Peach Sournova, a sour ale from Almanac Beer co (@almanacbeer) aged in oak barrels with peaches and vanilla beans, the Master Grade Kyrios, and the Best Hit Chronicle 1/1 Cup Noodle 🍜 . Beautiful aromas of under-ripe peach, nectarine flesh, oak, and hints of vanilla. The sip brings an immediate hit of sweet peach, followed closely by tart nectarine notes, and a woody flavor that's a bit more muted than it was on the nose. There's a bit of lingering tartness and a touch of sour pucker right a the end, balancing out the mellow vanilla in the sip. It's delightful, which doesn't surprise me since I've liked every Almanac Sournova beer I've tried, but it's still worth mentioning here. Also, I'm not gonna lie, I've wanted to drink this for a while, but I needed an orange gundam...because matching is everything. Oh, and the 1/1 Cup Noodle kit is gonna be flames, and I will not be justifying my purchase whatsoever 😂. As always, shout-out to USA Gundam. Beer of the Week 220 - 11/29/2017: Almanac Beer Co. Apricot de Brettaville 

A few months ago, I reviewed my first beer from Almanac Beer Co. (see BOTW 204) which was an American Wild Ale aged in oak barrels.  Today, we have Almanac’s Apricot de Brettaville, an American Wild Ale aged in oak barrels.  BUT, the big difference with this week’s beer is that it is made using Brettanomyces yeast.  as Almanac describes this beer, they note that “Brettanomyces yeast creates tropical and stone fruit flavors in the barrel, which we matched with a small mountain of San Joaquin Valley apricots and finished with a delicate dry-hop of aromatic hops. From the yeast, to the fruit, to the hops, every aspect of this beer adds apricot flavor and aroma – resulting in a delicious wild ale.”  I do love me some apricots, and I certainly love Wild Ales, so I have been looking forward to getting a chance to check this one out.

A de B pours a golden, straw color with a fluffy, 2-finger thick, eggshell white head that retains quite well.  Fizzy, visible carbonation shows this one is pretty lively right out of the bottle.  The aroma is what I would expect from this beer/style with  fresh apricot fruit, a bit of peach and peach pit, some white grape, white wine, and funky yeast coming through.  This one smells much more acidic than it does fruity, but the apricot is there if you search for it. 

The flavor is quite boldly Bretty and acidic with the fruit much more subtle here than in the nose.  If I focus, I can find the apricots; some nice funk to this too with farmy, musty flavors really standing out with plenty of sourness and acidity coming forth.  There’s light white wine, white grape, apricot fruit, and peach flesh flavors coming through behind the sour and funk, and just a touch of oak as well.   This is a medium-bodied beer with somewhat high carbonation.  Despite the high level of carbonation, it is very soft with a dry finish.

Overall, I liked this one.  In fact, I liked it better than BOTW 204, which I did not expect given all that was a part of BOTW 204.  This pales in comparison to some of The Bruery’s and Russian River’s sours made with Brett, but it was a nice offering nonetheless.  I hope I get to try some more of their wild ales in the future.

(06/14/22)... Apparently, it's a kolsch and incredible vocals kind of day! Tonight's first elixir is a beer given by a friend from one of his many work journeys, while the second is on tap at a concert venue along Cahuenga Blvd.: Saint Arnold Brewing "Santos Black Kolsch-Style Beer" 4.9% ABV - Dark amber orange color, slight hoppy malt aroma, low body, light hoppy malt flavor, easy finish, and light hoppy  malt aftertaste. Paired with @Yoshinoya Habanero Chicken w/Vegetables Regular Bowl. Almanac Beer Co. "True Kolsch" 5.0% ABV - Hazy amber color, honey malt aroma, low body, light honey malt flavor, easy finish, and malt watery aftertaste.
