Great Notion Fresh Hop Dune Hazy IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. Big and juicy with quite a lot of herbal and resinous qualities, too. The body has a bit of heft to it which carries the complexity well, and this has the best form of vegetal and herbal hop presence you get out of fresh hop beers. Excellent.

The New England IPA
New England IPA, also known as NE IPA, is a beer style that has recently gained popularity. It is a type of India Pale Ale (IPA) with unique characteristics that set it apart from other IPAs and this style of beer is one of my personal favorites. This article will discuss the factors that make NE IPA so unique. History and Origin NE IPA originated in the northeastern region of the United States, specifically in Vermont and Massachusetts. The style emerged in the early 2010s as a response to the growing popularity of West Coast IPAs, which were known for their intense bitterness and high-hop content. The first NE IPA was brewed by The Alchemist, a brewery in Waterbury, Vermont, in 2004. The beer was called Heady Topper, and it quickly gained a cult following among beer enthusiasts. Other breweries in the region, such as Tree House Brewing Company and Trillium Brewing Company, soon followed suit and began brewing their versions of NE IPA.
Tumblr media
Palmers Town NEIPA | Twin Barns Brewing Company | New Hampshire Craft Beer Appearance One of the most distinctive features of NE IPA is its appearance. Unlike traditional IPAs, which are clear and bright, NE IPAs are hazy and opaque. This cloudiness comes from using large amounts of hops during the brewing process. The hops create a lot of particulate matter in the beer, which remains suspended in the liquid, giving it a cloudy appearance. Craft Aroma and Flavor NE IPAs are known for their intense hop aroma and flavor but are not as bitter as traditional IPAs. Instead, the hops used in NE IPAs are chosen for their fruity and floral qualities rather than their bitterness. This gives the beer a juicy, tropical flavor reminiscent of citrus fruits, stone fruits, and berries. In addition to hops, NE IPAs often contain adjuncts such as oats, wheat, or lactose. These ingredients contribute to the beer's creamy mouthfeel and add sweetness to balance out the hop bitterness. New England IPA - Malt Character Another factor that sets NE IPAs apart from other IPAs is their malt character. Traditional IPAs have a dry, biscuity malt profile that provides a clean background for the hops to shine. NE IPAs, on the other hand, have a softer, sweeter malt profile that complements the fruity hop flavors. This is achieved using malted barley kilned at a lower temperature, resulting in a more complex malt flavor.
Tumblr media
Palmers Town NEIPA | Twin Barns Brewing Company | New Hampshire Craft Beer Yeast The yeast used in NE IPAs also plays a significant role in the beer's unique character. Many NE IPAs are brewed with yeast strains that produce fruity esters and add to the beer's overall fruitiness. Unfortunately, these yeast strains also flocculate poorly, contributing to the beer's cloudy appearance. In conclusion, New England IPAs are Delicious In conclusion, a New England IPA is unique because of its hazy appearance, intense hop aroma and flavor, creamy mouthfeel, sweeter malt profile, and fruity yeast character. This combination of factors distinguishes beer from other IPAs and has gained a loyal following among beer enthusiasts. NE IPA is a perfect example of how the craft beer industry continues to evolve and innovate, and it will be interesting to see how this style develops in the future. Read the full article

New York breweries win six medals at Great American Beer Festival
Tumblr media
New York State Brewers Association Executive Director Paul Leone poses on stage with Brewers Association CEO and President Bob Pease during this year’s GABF award ceremony on Saturday (Photo © Brewers Association)
Six New York state breweries, including one in New York City, took home medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver last weekend. Strangebird Brewery, Heritage Hill Brewhouse, New York Beer Project, Hudson Valley Brewery, Soul Brewing Co., and Brooklyn Brewery all scored wins in the 38th annual edition of the competition, which featured nearly 9,000 beers from breweries in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico in 102 categories. This matched New York’s strong showing at the festival last year, when the state’s breweries also took home six medals.
Of note, three of the six winning breweries were first-time GABF winners, and one of the winning breweries hasn’t won a medal in more than a decade.
Strangebird Brewery won bronze in the American Fruit Beer category for their Bird Light Yuzu. They competed among 108 entries. It’s the first GABF medal for the Rochester-based brewery that opened back in 2021, and it will hang next to their World Beer Cup bronze from earlier this year and their 2022 Brewery of the Year award at the New York Beer Competition.
Heritage Hill Brewhouse in Pompey, southeast of Syracuse, won silver for their Coconut Cluster in the Dessert Stout or Pastry Stout category, among 50 entries. It’s the second GABF medal for Heritage Hill (their first came in 2019), and it’s the third medal for this particular beer this year — it also won gold in the Pastry Stout category at the New York State Beer Competition this year, and in the same contest was awarded Best New York Farm Beer.
New York Beer Project’s Beer Lodge in Orchard Park won gold in the Experimental India Pale Ale category for their Hazy Crush. The category had 86 entries. It’s the second medal for New York Beer Project, which has multiple locations across two states, and the second year in a row one of their breweries has medaled.
Winning a medal in the Fruited American Sour Ale category was Hudson Valley Brewery in Beacon, who won gold for their Peach Silhouette among 165 entries. It’s the first medal for the acclaimed farm brewery that specializes in sours, which has been brewing beer since 2017.
The state’s biggest win came in the form of a gold medal in the German-Style Maerzen category, the fifth most competitive category in the festival, with 195 entries. Soul Brewing Co.’s Pleasantbräu Oktoberfest was awarded gold. It’s the first medal for the Westchester County brewery (located, not surprisingly, in Pleasantville) since they opened in March of 2020.
Finally, Brooklyn Brewery won a bronze medal in the Specialty Non-Alcohol Beer category for its Special Effects Grapefruit IPA, among 37 entries. It’s the state’s first win in a non-alcoholic beer category, Brooklyn’s first GABF medal since 2013, and Brooklyn’s 12th GABF medal overall.
Great American Beer Festival will return next year, October 9th through 11th in Denver.

Assignment 2 - What Brews?
Finding which brews would make the most sense is just as important as the label honestly. Finding brews that make sense and show the Nova Scotia spirit and heritage of Keiths was a tough choice. This part was all about marketing. If the brew doesn't make sense with the brand then why bother? There are so many different brew styles out there all with their own variations. I chose to pick 4 brews that will be marketed as 4 packs in 473 ml cans. Here is what I came up with:
Blueberry Sour
Unique & flavourful drinking experience. Wild blueberries are grown on low bushes all throughout Nova Scotia as they thrive in acidic soil conditions. Incorporating blueberries into a sour beer not only showcases regional ingredients but also appeals to consumers interested in local flavours of Nova Scotia. Sours are becoming increasingly more popular, especially those that are fruit flavoured. Based off their flavour profile they are an interesting introductory beer to those unsure of craft beer, being so fruit flavoured and sour.
Cream Ale
Light & approachable, slightly creamy mouthfeel & mild sweetness. Made with lactose malt. There is a demand for lighter, more approachable brews which Keith's already does. Given the Scottish heritage and focus on classic brews, this would be a great addition to their lineup. Highlighting and celebrating craftsmanship, blending traditional brewing techniques with modern tastes.
Cider
A gluten free option for those that don't yet support Keiths but soon could. Expanding to this style is a great way to gain access to an entirely new audience, not only those that are gluten free but also the younger generation who may not be yet interested in beer. The flavour profile is crisp and light as ciders are made from fermented apples. This is a great way to connect to the land of Nova Scotia like the Annapolis Valley, a rich agricultural area full of growing apples and other fruits.
East Coast IPA (NEIPA)
Also known as a new england india pale ale this style comes from the east and produces a juicy, hazy and low ibu brew, a very popular style currently. This style works well being that it has east coast ties. Producing an east coast ipa resonated with locals and others who are interested in a reflection of this region and brewing style.

I seriously can't recommend these enough and are the ultimate in cool, crisp, juiciness bursting with fresh fruit flavors & aromas.

This amazingly hazy IPA features El Dorado and Azacca hops which bring tons of citrus & fruit elements while intense Sabro hops highlight the big, tropical notes of this beer. The result of this unique hop combination is a groovy, juicy citrus bomb with tons of orange, lemon, melon, mango and pineapple flavors & aromas."
