Hey, thanks for putting up an ask blog! Don't know if tumblr is the best place to put it for social media engagement, but then again Neil Gaiman seems to be enjoying himself so who am I to judge?

I have a whole bunch of questions, and I'm not sure if it'd be annoying to flood your inbox with them, so feel free to pick and choose any of these to reply.

Questions for Dawn: who would you consider to be the animated 'it' girl right now?

What do you think about the recent trend of 'fleshwashing' that Disney has been pushing when it comes to remakes? Is this part of a bias against toons when it comes to casting?

In your opinion, who do you think is the best 'old-school' toon who still actively performs? Questions for Doris: Has toontown managed to avoid the plague of gentrification that hit a lot of other older neighborhoods in LA?

Is there a union for animated actors? If there is, how effective is it in your opinion? Have things gotten better or worse for animated actors over the years?

Did you ever get to know your animator? If not, would you have wanted to know them?

Who do I think is the current it girl of animation? It changes so fast, but my vote right now is POMNI! Who doesn't feel like Pomni like daily? Also, indie!

What do we think of all these live action remakes? I still don't mind them too much, but Avatar on netflix might be unnecessary. I'm starting to wear thin. Doris gave a rambling answer on this before and I don't think her opinion has changed.

Best old School toon still in business? I think we actually have an agreement on this one and that's this 2D Girl boss!

Was Toon town able to avoid any gentrification? Here's Doris with a history lesson:

As some people know, ToonTown was left to the toons, and that was great. We could vote for changes in the town and run it ourselves, but that didn't mean we were separate from California and certain laws. So it was devastating when it was decided that the land we lived on wasn't fully ours and the decision to build a freeway system was still being considered. This was in the 50s and I had already moved out of ToonTown, but I heard about the protests and letters written to Earl Warren.

None of it helped, and in 1956, Eisenhower signed the highway act and a freeway was constructed. So the town wasn't as saved as the movie "Who Frames Roger Rabbit" lets you believe.

Since the toons owned ToonTown, they couldn't just completely destroy it. We were just told to move. So the town is split up into districts. There's one near Disneyland, another a few streets from Universal. Always near studios. They like keeping an eye on their assets. So at least we got to keep the town in some way.

Is there a union for toons? There have been attempts. But in the end were considered intellectual property of the studios. fully owned and by contract from the moment the first line is sketched. A lot of older toons have a little more freedom from those contracts. By older, I'm talking Bugs Bunny and the Peanuts kids. That's starting to get harder though as studios are stating to hold a tighter grip on animation. It's less a creative thought process and more business. Doris says it's colder in a behind closed doors way. I say that cold is starting to leak into the outside. So yeah, no union, especially for newly drawn stars, and well...things aren't exactly getting better.

Did we get to know our creators?

Doris did!

We all do I guess while being drawn. but it's not as personal now. I was kinda made through a committee. So there are artists who really care and I would've wanted to get to know them, but there are also execs, studio owners, managers, all hovering around to check on their investment. And once approved, you are under studio control. It's nice if the artists can stick around at the studio, but most times they're laid off once the creation is done and they need to go work at another place. This goes into that whole colder thing. From what Doris has shown me, it was a little more fun before. Animators and toons would just hang out I guess.

They would even have fun with their voice actors.

Today, studios want big celebrities to give us our voices. So they usually come in to lay down the track and then leave with the paycheck. Not all though, I heard Jack Black like to see the characters he's given a voice too. It just doesn't happen often.

I guess the thing I'm taking away from these two MV incidents (Mafumafu and Zuttomayo) is that even though the utaite community has been growing a lot in recent years and these artists are getting more attention they're still operating at a weird "indie pseudo professional" status? And as such there is an unknown when it comes to how much goes on behind the scenes with the production of the music videos alongside the music. We don't know how or why an artist gets selected for the projects, which is where my interest lies because I grew up with Kagerou Project- where Sidu was the artist on all the MVs until Wannyanpuu made her fanmade MV for Kagerou Days and got asked to join the project. Then Jin worked with Sayuki on a different project and that work carried over into the more recent Reboot MV.

Nowadays we don't really see a slow integration like that. There are so many more animators getting jobs for different music video projects today, which is great for the animators. But the selection process is done largely through Twitter, and we sort of are left to speculate why an artist chose one animator over others. I speculated that the reason Porter Robinson worked with Waboku for "Musician" was because Waboku by that point had been established online for a few years then with Eve and Zuttomayo's works, but I have no idea if Porter Robinson specifically listened to or saw either of those animator's works or if someone who helped manage Porter helped select the animator. Wooma worked on Niru Kajitsu and Hiiragi Kirai and then did Ado's MV. All of these animators are selected likely because of their previous works/portfolio, which is a much more professional way of hiring them. But they're often hired through Twitter or other social media (which although many animation studios have been doing the same during crunch times) is a more unprofessional way of commissioning for this type of work. Although many of these utaites do use the same animators frequently and end up with that animator’s art associated with their own work (like Eve being more associated with Waboku and Mah’s art styles), they still go through many more animators for each music video than was common in the 2010s. (Despite Sidu’s work for Jin, she has always been tied to Neru’s work more so. Compared to Eve who has had a production by Wit Studio, songs sponsored by chocolate companies, small animation studios like Trif, and so forth). 

My question is mainly can we know how much communication goes on behind the scenes? Animators might get commissioned based of their previous works, but how professional are they actually operating at? Does the artist who works with them expect a certain professionalism even if selecting a smaller animator, do they demand more because they expect that professionalism? With cases like Mafumafu, is there a management team that helps select or suggest animators to the artist? (At this point you can’t convince me Mafumafu doesn’t have some kind of management. He had a Tokyo Dome performance). While I don’t doubt some artists still do have friendships or a closer collaboration experience with their animators, I always think about why are artists switching animators so much. What’s prompting the decision to choose smaller artists, rather than consistently sticking with one or two like in the past? With how many new animators I see on MVs, it honestly feels like sometimes they are scouring Twitter looking to extend a hand to someone underrated, which again isn’t bad! It just makes me wonder what is the decision making that led to this sort of massive change in the utaite community.

god okay so many thoughts. first of all, blanket fort! it's the kind of silly thing you dont expect them to do because they're both so- serious, i suppose. but they kinda need it because as a vampire Raphael is always cold and as a werewolf Maia is always warm. so they just get a thousand pillows, make a huge comfy bedding on the floor, and get blankets. Raphael is all wrapped up like a burrito with blankets over & under him and Maia has one (1) tip of the biggest one over her so she can be close to him. and then of course she lies over his chest and hugs him and it's so great and warm. he loves petting her head (gentle little squeezes over her curls so he doesn't hurt her and can still stroke her scalp, and it feels so good) as well, so they're just very comfy as they watch the movie

movies! i think Raphael is secretly a nerd. I mean, come on, he was there when most Nerd Classics™ aired and he needed a distraction haha I'm fine and if anything Magnus would probably take him to watch them. there's no way he doesn't have a soft spot for the classics. he probably hates the more recent stuff, it's all stiff special effects porn with bad writing in his opinion (and he is right), but he can watch and rewatch most classics and/or indie/fanmade/generally outside of the commercial circles sci-fi stuff. also reading sci-fi! he loves it

and canonically so does maia, so when she finds out about that? she's delighted. immediately she wants to watch all of his favorites with him with full commentary. "I'll make popcorn!" and she's smiling so bright and so excited, how can he say no to her?

so he talks very softly, "i remember when this scene aired, we were all so shocked at the plot twist", "oh, this used to be my favorite character, now i think i like the other better", etc. it feels a little weird to be talking so much during a movie, but maia likes to listen and he hadnt realized before how much of himself and of his past lies in his opinions of the shows. and it's nice

and look they both have a lot of thoughts over that stuff, because- well, they're both queer poc, they are more prone to engaging in media in a more creative and re-appropriating way. so they share their headcanons, lore ideas, opinions, internal meta. they both have amazing ideas and thoughts in completely different ways, and they're so excited over how the other can bring in fresh, interesting, well thought out ideas they would never have themselves. they end up excitedly discussing the media in question for hours on end, both smiling softly, happy to share. and again- there's so much of themselves in all of their ideas/headcanons/meta, it feels like something very intimate to be sharing them (and it is)

or documentaries! Maia loves documentaries, i am sure of it. not just on the obvious topic of marine biology (although she does have. a huge amount of them, both in DVD and downloaded on her laptop, hell, even VHS. catch her getting all sorts of vintage documentaries and books on sea life, she just has it all) but just in general? she likes history and sociology and just gaining knowledge as a whole, she's smart and curious and no topic is too trivial or useless. she'll watch anything from ancient Egypt to sociologic analyses of the furry community, as well as funny ones like the fyre festival documentary. oh, and mockumentaries! she absolutely loves those

Raphael never was a documentary guy, but with Maia, he is. first, because he also loves to learn. second, because he loves how enraptured she gets, how her eyes shine and she gets excited and even gasps when there's something particularly interesting she didn't know about. third, because with Maia he can stim as much as he wants, so that helps him pay attention

and she's just so happy she can share that stuff with him. also, they have a blast watching the fyre festival documentary. the incompetency is so off the charts. and they run a restaurant, so they have every right to make fun of them

and food! honestly, i think they just have popcorn. they already cook and work with food all day long so they want something easy to make and nice (although Raphael refuses to make microwaved popcorn. but he enjoys doing it on the pan so Maia doesn't really complain. also, it is better). and Raphael likes the texture, and they just have the bowl on their laps and aaaaa soft

and sometimes sweets! maia loves sweets so Raphael gets her those, usually fancy ones from bakeries or that he made himself, since she can't have any chocolate. he isn't a huge fan of super sweet things himself, but he loves that she loves it, and every time he brings her some she smiles so wildly and eats it with so much, like, pleasure? clearly lost in it, all melting and moany and "hmmm it's so good" and it's the best compliment ever. he can't stop smiling at her :')

In the meantime I saw a bad post (not one anyone here reblogged) and I gotta complain for a hot minute because like. I’m genuinely baffled by seeing OP complain for multiple paragraphs about how People Not Wanting Creepshit In Fandom Spaces is the worst of evils and people vocally not liking incest and underage ships are puritan devils when like. You have a Fate avatar!!!!!! You’re in the Fate fanbase!!!!! You should know firsthand the kind of horrors that happen when a given piece of media or subculture lets the creepshit run rampant!!!!! What are you doing, why are you arguing this!!!!!!!!

Like, genuinely, I don’t understand this at all. Most of the people here in the tungle dot hell branch of the Fate fandom vocally hate the franchise’s tendency towards creepy bullshit, so I genuinely don’t understand how someone could condemn creepy bullshit in Fate and other animes and then turn around and say “But creepy bullshit in fanfic spaces is okay though”. In my head that just reads as “I hate Prillya and all the horrors within it, but if someone wrote a fanfic with the exact same content as Prillya that would totally be okay”, which is just a complete nonsense stance to me. What’s the step in logic that I’m missing here??? Where do people keep falling off the path??? If it’s an argument of “It’s okay when fans do it because fans don’t have a lot of influence, but it’s bad when pros do it because pros have a lot of influence”, then that’s wrong because 1. that’s not how subcultures work, 2. the boundary between pro and indie/fanmade is much hazier than you think it is, and 3. You should still know better from your experiences with Fate/hell because all of Fate’s creators were born in the doujin scene and the franchise thrives off of the hazy space between professional and indie. Is it a case of people getting conned by Spooky Strawmen and genuinely not understanding Why People Are Mad At Creepy Fanfics?????? Do people genuinely not realize that The Creepshit They Hate In One Medium Is The Exact Same As The Creepshit They’re Defending In Another because the exacts ways said creepshit manifests depends on the medium and tastes of the surrounding subculture????? Is it just people trying to defend fanfiction using whatever arguments they can get their hands on even when they’d openly disagree with said arguments in any other context????? I feel like I’d need someone to actually walk me through the chain of logic here, because I genuinely don’t understand.

3 Fan-Made Music Videos About Brideshead Revisited and Maurice And How To Mute Them And Pair Them With Songs From The Shins’ Excellent New Album, Heartworms

First, a word on my methods. I have been prompted to embark on studies of this medium--that is, the medium of the fanmade music video about gay lovers from a piece of fiction that may or may not name them as gay--by the dearth of adequate visual representation of homosexuals in media. For a while this was a popular folk art form in America and worldwide. While most videos were about popular TV shows, teens learned video editing skills and then trained their attention on niche interests as well. There are no videos for “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (I’ve checked), but whiter, nerdier gay classics like Brideshead and Maurice have received the AMV treatment. Once in a while I like to regress, and during these times I watch these videos. I appreciate all the people who make these videos for me to consume. Sadly, the popularity of the art form has declined as other video art forms like snapchat and vine have encouraged youth to innovate in new ways. This has led to most of the videos still online for any given fandom (and there are almost always some for almost every fandom) being set to songs which are years out of date. You can remedy this in the comfort of your living room with no technical skills required at all. All you have to do is open a new tab and play a song you like which matches the video sort of. This article is intended to highlight my favorite songs from the new album which indie rock band The Shins has just put out, but you can play any Britney song from before 2005 and it will work just as well for all of these videos.

Without further ado, here’s the shit that’s keeping me up at night still to this day because this is how I engage with my own emotions rather than seeking a therapist or something:

1. Maurice/Alec- Keep Holding On - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQIOu2RmEm0 --pair with “So Now What?”

This video is a classic, posted on Youtube in the brighter year of 2008. Its low-res quality doesn’t impede the seriously artistic way this four-minute long video is put together. Part of the credit goes to the brilliant cinematographers working on the actual movie, but Youtube user perrythaler has a great sense of how to choose clips which convey the narrative arc of Alec and Maurice’s love while punctuating the flow with shots of them embracing, sharing glances while playing cricket, and (most wrenchingly) Maurice undergoing hypnosis. The video also mixes in a lot of variety between dark blues and bright outdoor summer scenes, so it stays interesting. The song isn’t one that currently strikes me as emotionally resonant, but that’s why God gave us mute buttons and allowed us to open new tabs. Like a fine wine, you can pair this video with any music which matches its joyous, nostalgic, hopeful ambiance. For this, I recommend “So Now What.” Mercer’s vocals are floaty and dreamy. Featured lyrics: “I had this crazy idea/that we’d just coast to the end/change lines in every direction/guess we’ll just begin again.” The words to the song really are, you realize, about Alec and Maurice suddenly realizing they are willing to take risks for one another and give up literally everything stable in their respective lives in order to achieve intimacy which transcends class distinctions and which flies in the face of homophobia and, hopefully, avoids the brutality of the oncoming first world war. 

2. Brideshead Revisited-  With All Of My Heart - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulEHogq4Xwo --pair with song of your choosing but “cherry hearts” works well for the first half

I highly recommend watching the actual video with sound, but you will also want to mute it and use it with other songs, because this is, sadly, one of the very few Brideshead videos out there. It is four glorious minutes long and tracks the happy-to-tragic trajectory of the overall story. There are shots of Charles and Sebastian dancing, laying arm in arm, etc. The later parts of the video are about Sebastian’s alcoholism and Charles falling out of love with him.If you have a song about being in love or longing, mute it and play from the beginning. If your song is about tragedy and grief, start somewhere about two minutes in. “Cherry Hearts” fits with the beginning pretty well, and the lyrics are just so so in line with Brideshead that it prompted me to start on this whole spiral.

3. Shattered- Maurice and Clive -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTOJ11iF4d8-- pair with “Heartworms”

I have one complaint for this video, which has to do with the multicolor filters that seemed to the creator to be a good idea and which were indeed very fashionable for AMVs created between 2011-2013. Everything else about this video (when it is muted, anyway, and paired with a really good song) is perfect. It’s heart-wrenchingly organized in almost reverse chronological order, starting out with the scene where Maurice tries to rekindle the physical affection he and Clive had always shared and is brutally rejected by his sweetheart. Maurice starts to cry, and the rest of the video is a montage of the past and then of the scenes where Maurice visits Clive at his country estate after he is married, when Maurice is still mooning over him and has not met Alec yet. I think the original song the creator chose is probably okay, but I won’t ever know because I am only listening to “Heartworms” over this video, over and over again. “Heartworms” is a song about being rejected and not being able to get over it and feeling like while maybe part of it is about homophobia or pain or something personal it might also kind of be about class (which with Maurice and Clive it almost certainly is, since Clive really is from the gentry whereas Maurice is just a middle-class workaday stiff, especially after dropping out). It’s half bitter and half loving, and this video paired with the song captures that sense really well.

There we have it, folks, my midnight infodump! This is what I found myself obsessing over on emotional late nights in the years after I got done caring about Harry Potter. That said, though, if you are ever interested in which Remus Lupin AMVs are good enough to pair up with your favorite mountain goats song, give me a call.
