I looked around the unfamiliar streets, my worried expression hidden under my mask and Eevee cap, the latter’s ears flapping around with my jerky head movements. Uselessly looking at the street signs, I sighed, unable to read them in this foreign country.

I had travelled to Japan with a friend, purely to watch the Stray Kids' concert they had held just earlier that day. If we wanted to see them live once in our lives, we had no choice, with us living in a small country in Europe. And as we all knew, idols didn't usually hold concerts in Europe, making international fans cry out in despair all over the world. Either way, we decided to join the japanese concerts, us being fans of the country itself as well, due to our love for anime and manga.

But now I stood in the streets alone, typing directions into google maps on my phone, to at least try to get to the train station. You see, my friend came with her boyfriend and they had booked a place to stay at together. She had offered to let me stay without an ounce of hesitation, but I didn't want to be a bother and intrude. So, I’d booked a place by myself, but by the time I had gotten around to it, everything in that city near the concert or even my friend's place had already been booked. I had no choice but to choose a place at a hotel that was far away, far enough that you could only reach it with a train from the concert's location.

Come on me, I was a big girl, I could do this. I got here somehow -still had no idea how, with my anxiety and horrible navigation skills-, I could find my way back too.

So with a quiet, nervous sigh, I started following the directions shown on my phone, head slightly bopping to the music that filtered through my headphones that sat snugly on my ears, over my cap. Of course the pleasant and energetic tunes were from the same band I had seen hours ago on stage, but with the added background noise of the late city life, thanks to the ambient aware option on my headphones.

The train I needed to reach wouldn't leave for a good while, so I could slightly relax and look around the cement jungle without having to hurry needlessly. It was interesting to see how different, yet in a way, similar it was to my own country. Sure, the buildings' style was different, the streets were more busy and bright, but some shops were the same or really similar. It was nice, to just not feel completely alien and lost in a foreign city.

Although one thing that kept happening was that people kept staring at me. Naturally, it was bound to happen with my slightly over 6 feet height in Japan of all places, but the added combo of my Eevee outfit only strengthened it. Some people even outright complimented me, making me awkwardly bow and thank them in my limited japanese knowledge. To my utter surprise, some even asked for a selfie or a photo, undoubtedly making my cheeks dust with red, all evidence hidden under my mask and scarf.

Things seemed to be going well, until the time of day was starting to run out and the streets were slowly but surely becoming empty. The fact that my GPS was taking me through slightly questionable roads didn't help in the matter at all.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps, somewhere behind me, never stopping.

At first, I didn't think too much of it, but then my paranoid mind made me pause my music on my phone, the device buried in the depths of my pocket. I didn't stop and look around, merely continued to walk towards my destination to not seem suspicious, something my gut told me to avoid at all cost.

Then I listened.

The footsteps were still there, something that didn't change no matter how much I had walked. They were also weird, rhythm-wise. They felt unnatural, as if the person didn't usually walk like that. Their rhythm was also suspiciously like mine, the sound of our steps usually mixing together into one, making me listen keenly for several minutes to confirm my suspicions.

My pulse picked up, skyrocketing into the stratosphere.

I had heard about the dangerous things that could happen on the late night streets of Japan, my mind now on overdrive as I tried to act natural, as if I was clueless still.

I had to get away from this person somehow, I didn't want any of those horrors to happen to me, just the mere thought made my skin crawl and head hurt.

I shouldn't have turned down my friend's offer, being a third wheel would have been so much safer.

My eyes fluttered down onto my phone and my heart skipped a beat.

I was walking in the wrong way.

Amidst my panic, I must have taken several wrong turns, because now I was dangerously far away from the train station. Maybe if I hurried I could have made it, a debatable thought in itself, but that was the last thing on my mind as I heard people chatting from my right. Turning my head over there, I was met with bright lights from advertisement boards and all kinds of fairy lights, the fact that I was in a dark alley registering in my mind only then.

I didn't hesitate to make my way over there with quick steps, my long legs carrying me swiftly and quickly towards my desired goal.

But not quick enough.

Before I could reach the main street, I was grabbed from behind, something being forcefully pushed in front of my face. But probably due to height differences -also thanks to my fluffy scarf and my mask’s added layers of protection-, the person couldn't quite do it quickly and I instinctually elbowed them wherever I could reach.

Based on the grunt he let out, I hit his gut, the arms around me releasing their hold just enough for me to break away and sprint towards the people with all my adrenaline-powered strength.

When I reached the brightly lit street, my eyes looked around the empty place, mind halting to a stop.

Where were the people? I just heard them! Where were they?!

But before I could look around properly, I was tackled to the ground, my arms that instinctually cushioned my fall flaring up in pain. An instinctual yell left my mouth as I wrestled with him, my scattered mind resorting to shouting in english and broken japanese both.

Just as I thought I was going to be kidnapped, my hands held down and face stuffed with a drenched cloth, the weight on top of me disappeared in an instant.

I didn't really know what just happened, I only heard some shouting -in what language, i wasn't sure anymore- and skin upon skin impact, before the quieting sound of shoes hitting the ground reached my ringing ears.

I simply blinked up at the dark sky as I panted there, head laying on the dirty pavement underneath me as I fought with the nauseating dizziness that was attacking my system violently.

Sometime later -because i wasn't sure how long i had been laying there for-, a figure appeared in my vision, his eyes above his dark mask filled with worry. Sounds came from him, but it all sounded gibberish to me at that moment.

After receiving no reply, he turned to the side to talk to someone, but before he could do anything else, I quickly sat up. He fussed around me, rightfully surprised by my sudden movements, but I cared not as my mind finally caught up to itself.

I quickly tore my damp mask off, hiding my face from the harsh autumn wind with my scarf quickly afterwards, the soft fabric providing me with much needed comfort. Feeling the dark fabric in my hands, it was no wonder that no amount of breathing helped after my attacker had left. It was soaked with most probably chloroform, explaining why I was still feeling so dizzy.

Looking up from the mask, I saw the man who had -probably- saved me, crouched right in front of me. Another man was next to him, taller and more built, dressed in dark clothes. They were talking, but the language they used was definitely not japanese or even english. From the sound of it, it was another asian language, but I couldn't pinpoint which with my extremely limited knowledge and gibberish thoughts.

Not knowing what else to do with my hazy mind, I bowed my head as much as I could towards my saviours, uttering my thanks in japanese. Thankfully, I knew that much from all those years of watching anime and beginner japanese language classes.

They immediately stopped talking, the man who fussed over me earlier saying something along the lines of not a problem in japanese and asking me how I was feeling. I said I was okay, because really, I was, my mind was just a bit foggy. His eyebrows furrowed at my answer, as if he couldn't believe me for some reason. I furrowed my own eyebrows at that and slightly tilted my head to the side, not understanding his confusion.

But when I tried to stand up after putting my cap and headphones back on properly -the latter around my neck this time-, I understood his concern.

I was shaking.

Sure, not extremely, but the slight, unintentional movements of my body were there, clear as day.

"Oh, looks like I lied about being fine, sorry." - I quietly uttered out in english, not even realising that I had switched languages once again. "So I did hear it right, you do speak english." - one of them spoke back, catching me off guard.

"Shit, sorry, it wasn't intentional." - I quickly muttered out, defending myself. "No worries, now I know why you didn't respond to me the first time and just looked lost instead." - he lightly laughed out.

The person next to him extended a hand towards me, and after blinking at it for a few seconds, I finally realised he was just trying to help me up. So, with a purse of my lips and a bow of my head, I thanked him and took his hand. He swiftly pulled me up, checking if I needed some help to stay upright. Seeing that I was alright -as alright as one could be in that situation-, he let me go and talked to the other man in that foreign language once again.

I simply stood there, the weight of what had just happened not fully hitting me yet. Realising that I was still clutching my mask in my hand, I pocketed it and looked towards the only other man on the road besides us three.

He was speaking in that same foreign language, but sometimes he switched over to english. His accent was thick and painfully familiar, along with his deep, melodic voice. I tried to fit the puzzle pieces into their place as I just watched him, how he spoke to his phone, no doubt vlogging or live streaming.

" -y, hey, are you okay? Do you need to sit down?" - a soft touch broke me out of my train of thoughts, his voice -that was also familiar and had a similar accent- laced with worry. "Y-yes, yes, sorry, I was just lost in thought. But thank you two, again, for saving me, I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here. Really, thank you so much." - I rambled out, bowing a few times for good measure. "Hey, it's alright, I'm glad we were here. Do you need help getting home? Where're ya headed to?" "Ah, the train station. But I'll be fine alone… Why are you looking at me like that?" "... The train station is hours away from here, and it's already almost midnight."

Eyes widening at his answer, I took my phone out of my pocket -a miracle it had stayed there, unharmed- and unlocked the screen. Sure enough, he was right. Checking the schedule for the train I needed, no matter how many times I read it over and over again, the letters and numbers didn't change at all.

The last train would depart in 30 minutes, something that I would only reach if I had magically gained the ability to teleport.

My eyes turned glossy as I continued looking at my screen in despair, lower lips caught between my teeth as a way to ground myself.

I couldn't get to my rented out hotel room now.

"Hey, hey, look at me. It's gonna be okay. What's the matter?" - his warm voice reached my ears once again, my eyes flitting up to meet with his. "My…my train… The last one’s gonna depart in 15 mins, something I have no way of reaching. And now I-, I can't get to my hotel room now, I don't have anywhere to stay–" - my voice cut off at the end, worry eating me out from the inside.

Even if I were to call my friend to stay with her and her boyfriend, they were a few hours away from where I ran away to. I had already checked it, multiple times. Somehow I’d walked in the completely wrong direction as I was trying to escape that man.

"It's gonna be okay, trust me, I'll think of something. Why don't you sit down over there and eat this, while I talk to my buddies here, hm?" - he gently said, pointing towards a nearby bench and handing me a lil protein bar from his pocket.

I blinked down at him -because he was considerably shorter than me-, but then I carefully took the offered snack and nodded. I didn't have anything else to do anyway, and I needed to take any help I could get. That much was obvious to me, even in my current situation.

I felt like a pathetic child that needed to be looked after, sitting there on the bench as I snacked on my protein bar in an Eevee cap.

Maybe I was one. I wouldn't be surprised at this point.

Having finished munching on the snack, I pulled my scarf back up and stared emptily at the ground in front of me, hands clutched and resting on my knees that rested tightly clenched together, no doubt causing a faint bruise to form.

I was absolutely fucked, to put it simply.

I had been almost kidnapped in a foreign country, merely hours after I’d had the time of my life at the first concert of my life. Chloroform was probably still lingering in my system and clouding my mind, not to mention that my only friend in this country was long asleep and I had already formed a splitting headache.

Wonderful.

Truly, truly, wonderful.

I couldn't help the sigh that left through my nose, my hand going up to rub at my now dry eyes -contact lenses sadly had that effect-, but stopping when I remembered I had makeup on. I tugged the cap even more into my hurting head, instinctively trying to hide myself magically with the habitual gesture.

Just when I thought about putting my headphones up and calming my still very erratic pulse with some music, the shorter man approached me -the taller one lingering behind-.

He sat down beside me, leaving a comfortable amount of space between us, something my jittery mind much appreciated.

"So, we talked about it, and ya could stay with us for the night if you want to. It's just me and some friends. Of course, you would get your own room, all to yourself. I can bunk with one of my pals for the night no problem. I understand if ya don't trust me, truly I do realise how sketchy my offer sounds, but… I don't want you to stay out here for the night and get hurt even more. I have the opportunity to help, and I want to." - he carefully explained it to me, making sure I was following his sentences actively.

I remained quiet, thinking the offer through.

He was right, it was definitely sketchy as heck, but, what could I do? I could either stay out here on the streets, because everything was either closed or booked already -stupid concert-, or I could go with them.

"Ya can decide a bit later too, ya kno'." - I quickly shook my head gently -that massive headache significantly becoming worse-, cutting him short. "If you guys really don't mind, then… I would like to take your offer." - I gently muttered out, bowing once again in gratitude. "Oh please, stop bowing, ya really don't need to. It's alright, really, none of us bite, I promise. Actually, lemme introduce you to one of my pals, he's been there, live this whole time."

He stood up after he pointed to the aforementioned streamer and I quickly followed him, slightly bowing towards the taller man once again in gratitude as we passed by him. He sheepishly rubbed his neck and waved his hand in front of his face in a dismissive way, probably wanting me to stop bowing, just like the shorter man.

Speaking of which, I watched as he walked up to his buddy, my body slowing to a halt. I didn't want to disturb their job or hobby as well -whatever streaming was to them-, so I stopped before I could enter their phone camera's range.

The other man was slightly taller, but still smaller than me, with blonde strands peeking out from underneath his black beanie. Few freckles sat above his own dark facemask, my eyes squinting at the familiarity.

But once again, my train of thoughts were disrupted before I could come to a much needed conclusion.

"Hey, don't be shy, c’mere. This is Felix, and I'm Christopher, but call me Chris." - he introduced themselves to me as I still didn't go into their camera's range just quite. "I’m… well, uuh, my name’s weird and foreign, so for simplicity purposes, call me Eevee. For… for obvious reasons. I'm sorry, I will tell you later if you really want to know it." - I added in, bowing my head before glancing at their stream.

An understanding hum left their lips and I suddenly felt like I was in the presence of an anime character. A sunshine one, to be specific.

"I wanted to say it earlier, but your outfit is so freaking cute, like, really cute! Where did ya get it?" - the blondie asked, eyes sparkling and smile widening, so much so that his eyes were slightly arched upwards, turning into little crescent moons.

Taken aback, it took me a few seconds to formulate a normal reaction and reply.

"I-, uh, thank you? Well, I kinda got these clothes at different places and times, they just fit together nicely by coincidence. The scarf and cap was actually a gift from my brother, because he saw this silly lil cap in an Austrian store one day and wanted me to put it on real bad. Long story short, here I am now, fully decked out. A walking, comically tall Eevee on the streets. Just don't throw a pokeball at me. They hurt surprisingly much." "Ooooh, that's so cool. Hyung, we gotta get a cap like this later! Also, wait, did someone actually throw a pokeball at ya?" "... Yeah…"

Their expressions were hilarious even with their masks on, absolutely worth the pain. I couldn't help the little laugh that slipped past my lips.

"Don't worry, it only happened like twice, and one of those times it was a plushie." "Fhew, okay, I was gettin' worried there for a sec." - the blondie sighed out, his hand placed onto his chest out of relief.

With a small laugh they started walking, my anxiety-filled self unsure if I should join them. I really didn't want to be on camera, even though my face was practically completely covered.

But I didn't need to ponder for long, their forms looking back at me and beckoning me to join them.

"Come here, and naur, don't worry, it's fine. You're not disrupting us."

With a small nod and a deep breath, I joined them, slightly waving at the camera.

Christopher introduced me, or I assumed he did, because he was speaking in that foreign language once again.

"Right, Eevee, do you speak korean?" - one of them asked, drawing my attention to him from the flooded chat that was moving way too fast for my tired eyes.

So that was what that foreign language waaas, got it.

"Ah, uh, no, not at all. I couldn't understand a word of any of your guys' conversation, don’t worry."

"What do ya mean don’t worry, that must feel awful to not understand anything! We'll speak more english then, no worries! I couldn't speak it a few years ago either, so I truly do feel ya." - he replied, voice cheery and calming.

Wait.

Now hang on for a fucking second.

This boy to my right was blonde, had freckles, had a deep voice, had a weird english accent and hadn’t been able to speak korean up until a few years ago.

The boy to my left had the same accent, his voice was way too fucking familiar and nice, he had dark curls peeking out from underneath his beanie and could speak korean well.

Stray Kids had their concert half a day ago in the same city, a band that had two members with an eerily similar description.

Haha, naur, no way.

I looked back at them as they were talking to their chat, only coming to that same, insane conclusion. Glancing at the flooded screen on the phone, I mostly saw -probably- korean characters, but there were a few english sentences as well. One of them caught my eye, the word 'Chan' peeking out from it painfully.

My breath got caught in my throat.

Okay, okay, they were just people, act normal. Just, normal, okay? If they won't find out you're a STAY, and neither will the other fans, everything would be fine. I didn't plan on taking photos of them secretly or anything anyway, like a goddamn sasaeng. So just breathe and ignore that they kinda do be idols and people you look up to, okay?

Aaaagh, I was so absolutely fucked.

Another one that was supposed to be A/B/O The story of Bai Lan, a young man who wants Mr. Shen, a proud alpha, to be his omega. According to the casting announcement ‘Desire’ will consist of 24 episodes with 45 minutes runtime per episode.

Announced for 6/9/2023 but never aired. This seems to just be borrowing the branding and have nothing to do with either BL originals since it's about 4 men in an idol group.

Given the series (remake)

Fuji TV announced and episodic series focuses on Ritsuka as he rediscovers his love for music thanks to Mafuyu. Given the Movie focused on their bandmates, Akihiko-Haruki, and their tumultuous relationship. The storyline for this second film involves Ritsuka temporarily joining Hiiragi and Shizusumi’s band, and the tension that brings to his new relationship with Mafuyu. It will also delve into the relationship between Hiiragi and Shizusumi.

The drama stars Thai actors Jeff Satur and Barcode Tinnasit and Korean actors Dion and Jun In-Kyu (Q) About a spaceship that crash-lands into and destroys a bakery shop. Of course this means the alien and the baker end up living together. At the same time, other aliens-in-hiding all around the city start hunting for them. One of my most anticipated BLs. It sounds SO WEIRD.

A/N: I hope I did you justice! just a little blurb about how I think this would go down...willing to do a part two if anyone is interested! Comments always welcomed and encouraged.

“You’re hard to find, you know…” Gojo hummed with interest. He hid his surprise well; he hadn’t expected you to be here, in the flesh tangibly. “Had to go off a rumor… ” He paused. “I have to say, though, I wasn’t expecting this…”

Your hand was steady, pistol pointed at the back of your intruder’s head. Anyone should know better than to listen to the rumors that floated within the Gachinko Fight Club. It was a mistake that you created ones that swarmed your image.

But your wrists itched.

It was as if phantom threads tethered you down. When the knots tightened due to resistance, you became a marionette for those who put you in your place. You’d move with talent as a puppet controlled by those ranked above you.

Your exhaustion had created a silly—delusional— image in your head. Your cheeks were rosy with red paint, and your eyes brightened with Pierrot-styled tears. You performed on a stage silently, an alienated observer of the mysteries and shadows of sorcery.

You took on a second life, reciting an alert, troubled, swaying, and deliberately uncertain verse. It didn’t matter if the audience understood; they considered what you said genuine art. Then, when it all ended, the standing ovation wouldn’t bring you the joy you thought.

In other words, you grew bored of the act. You were tired of the shadows consuming your days. You itched to stretch your power. And now you were here, leaving residuals behind like a novice for others to track.

“Hakari never mentioned you were here.” Gojo turned to face the barrel, a soft smile present. His hands were clasped behind his back, chest forward with enthusiasm.

“I’ve had a really long day—” You cocked the gun. It was a superficial barrier, you knew it would have no effect and primitive in its purpose. “—get to the point, Gojo.”

“You’re distracted.” All six eyes focused as Gojo spoke honestly. He cocked his head immaturely, inspecting you closer. “You fight with feeling, I’ll give you that, but you lack…assurance. You’re holding back.”

“I don’t have time for fan service.” You frowned. The more you pushed forward, the more resistance you were met with. “Why are you here?”

Your lip throbbed, newly bruised and busted from the spat you were just in. It had been a rigged match. If you went down, more money went into your pocket. It wasn’t long until another fight called your name. This time, though, your built-up frustration would find catharsis. The spectacle would draw in the cash. You’d put on a show for non-sorcerers, and you knew you’d receive that standing ovation. Again, it didn’t matter. You didn’t fight for your audience; you didn’t even fight for yourself. You weren’t sure what you were doing, but it alleviated you.

You paused in thought. Your eyes scanned the man before you. Satoru Gojo. He was here for something. For you. There was always a catch, never straightforward truth.

“Can’t I visit an old friend?” His shrug carried simplicity.

“No.” Your finger twitched on the trigger. “If you’re here to kill me, get it over with.”

This made Gojo’s humor stutter. It was in your nature to think the worst of him, but it was never easy to swallow. There was a simpler time when you would have blindly followed him, not needing an excuse for his presence. But your skin crawled with something unspoken.

So, he turned serious. “I need your help.”

“You, of all people, can’t be desperate enough to need something.” You pushed. You were growing agitated, buried feelings resurfacing. “What is it you want?”

It was obvious. He needed, no—wanted—your technique. All you could think was how hypocritical. People aren't tools. We aren't born with any set role. Gojo had consoled you once. And yet, here he stood, asking the impossible of you.

So, you pulled the trigger and ran.

God I can't really stand JK anymore.

Everything regarding him went a downhill since 2023. The way he behaved changed a lot.. LIKE A LOT now he's way cockier as if no one in the whole world can top him and he doesn't need to listen to anyone giving even good advises, how he used to present himself and looked changed drastically now he looks like a junkie, how he used to perform changed so much now he doesn't half half the energy or stage presence and doesn't give af about making mistake a ton times while before he used to perform with extreme perfection. He's listening to their PR teams too much like where did I go live when I miss fans went ? Now he's listening to their cheap promo tricks. His work ethics is completely opposite from what BTS was.. he's working with payola king of the whole industry and buying success. Releasing a 100 version and a western collab with some B grade pop artist. The songs he releasing are basically shit now when he used to release magic shop, film out, your eyes tell and still with you kind of gems.

The ONLY thing connecting me to him now is Jimin. There's no way to avoid JK when you are a Jimin stan. But i'm WAITING for the day Jimin finally open his eyes and get out of this toxic relationship so I don't want to put up with him anymore.

You see, your problem is that Jungkook is not Jimin. That's your problem. Half way through your comment, I smiled to myself and I thought well this Anon would certainly love Jimin then if these are the qualities they looking for in an idol. only to get to the end of the Ask to find out you actually do like Jimin💀

That complicates things for me.

Where should I even begin

There's nothing wrong with having a preference. There's nothing wrong with having a bias.

I'm not gonna come for your throat on this.

You prefer Jimin's work ethics and prefer how seriously he takes his public relations, how he puts on effort and that's alright.

BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO HATE JUNGKOOK just because he's not YOUR PREFERENCE.

If you keep that up you and I gon have a problem.

Do I think Jungkook can take a page or two out of the Jimin idol manual? Sure.

As much as I looove seeing Jungkook live his life on his own terms not giving a fuck what anyone cares- some times, in certain areas I do think he could use that self regulation.

Yet on the other hand, I don't find Jimin's over regulation appealing either. I've ever said his kumbaya persona, caring too much what others think, trying to be perfect, self regulated, evolved, controlling his words, his attention, being overly polite, smiling when he should be cussing people out all in the name of his consciousness of the fact he is an idol really REALLY FRUSTRATES ME.

Jimin struggles with this. The never mind tattoos, the song lyrics yearning for freedom, set me free- where do you think that comes from?

I don't know how we can call ourselves stans and not sense some of these things: the members constantly telling him not to care what people would think, to do whatever he wants,- even Jungkook openly reminding him HE IS AN ADULT and shouldn't care about certain things.

Jungkook is good for Jimin and Jimin is good for Jungkook.

Jimin is the leash and restrain Jungkook needs and Jungkook is the freedom Jimin craves.

Please don't come for jikook I'll paint you and it ain't going to be pretty.

Also remember, this is a human being you are talking about. He is not an alien. He is human just like you. That vitriol and animosity towards him is so not necessary.

I can't help you unhate him.

But please, be a good human.

He is a relatively young man navigating overwhelming situations. I personally think going solo has taught him so much and there is much more he'd learn along the way.

And please, it's slander to say he half ass his performance- have you seen his tiktok? THE THIBGS HE CAN DO WITH HIS WAIST- MY GOD!

Oh and did you see Tae's smoke challenge? I may or may not be addicted to the part he wines his waist- lolay lolay lolay

Liste, the point I'm making here is, It's his journey and his choice to decide the type of idol he wants to be. You may like it or you may not. That's a you problem. However he's responsible for his own reputation and his own success in the industry and I think he is still learning to hone his values and filter his choices through those values.

Give that man a break .

Books of 2024: October Wrap-Up.

Gr8 news: I am no longer very far behind on my NaNo prep reading!! I had to drop JUST LIKE HOME (reread) and HOUSE OF LEAVES, but I got through the rest of my Haunted House and/or Aliens and/or Parasite/Fungus TBR. Here they all are!

SHRIEK - ★★★★ I think SHRIEK Is my favorite volume of the Ambergris trilogy, taken as a whole--the one-way conversation Duncan was having with Janice was a really neat narrative choice, and then the reveal in the Afterword's Afterword was, in true VanderMeer fashion, mind-blowing.

FINCH - ★★★★ I was actually surprised by how much I liked this one. It helped me figure out a LOT about what kinds of power dynamics I enjoy in borderline-dystopian fiction, and what intrigues me most about limited agency. It wrapped the story up almost too neatly, for a VanderMeer, but I did still have a good time and blitzed through it quickly. Given this one and SHRIEK, I'm counting the Whole Series as a Four-Star read--I'd like to reread it someday, now that I know what's going on.

LEECH - ★★★★★ (reread) STILL ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVES, OFFICIALLY!! It's very gothic and heavy and fucked up, but it does FASCINATING things with POV, and worldbuilding, and storytelling frameworks. PLEASE check the content warnings, but if none of those are hard no's for you, definitely pick this one up. I suspect anyone for whom Animorphs was a Formative Influence will adore this (but so far my sample size is really only 1)--please prove me right.

A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES - ★★★½ This was fun! Not my favorite Kingfisher (that award still goes to HOLLOW PLACES), but I had a good time--I laughed, I squealed over vultures, I blasted through pages to get to the end.

STARLING HOUSE - ★★★★ Alix E. Harrow always manages to write exactly my catnip, somehow. Maybe it's the ADHD, but I'm constantly finding connections to my own writing projects in her work, and STARLING HOUSE was no exception! I liked that this one was more modern, and the sibling dynamic was precious, and I love weird sentient houses where space is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule. I'll probably reread this one for Driscoll purposes!

WOODWORM - ★★★½ So much rage in such a tiny volume, and I was Absolutely Here For It. I don't tend to read much lit fic, but I do try to read a lot in translation, and I thought this one did very cool stuff with Spanish--the prose felt natural in English, but I loved the linguistic details the translators left in Spanish and how much depth that added. I feel like this one might be a good fit for Carmen Maria Machado fans, too.

HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE - ★★★ Call this a low 3, from me. It was Fine, I guess. I liked what he did with the act structure (labeling parts as stages of grief was very cool), and I liked the family dynamics and history, but a lot of the humor didn't land for me (I got a few sensible chuckles, but a bunch of it wasn't funny), and the "oh this author is A Man, huh" moments made me roll my eyes (seriously: Who thinks about their ~breasts~ when an angry taxidermied squirrel is clawing down your shirt?? No One With Breasts, Mr. Dude). This book did at least teach me that I'm not really interested in gore (it's just boring, unlike body horror, my beloved). I might still pick up HORRORSTOR, but I probably won't look into most of his other stuff, if this one is indicative of his general style. Meh.

THE ART OF EXCESS - No rating (didn't read the whole thing). At the end of ALWAYS COMING HOME, Richard Powers mentioned this book as the reason he finally committed to ALWAYS, so I was curious what this Tom Leclair dude had to say about it back in 1989. I had a heck of a time tracking down a copy (it's very out of print, and my local library had to source it from the Library of Congress for me), but I didn't want to buy it to read just the preface/intro/epilogue, because I haven't read any of the other texts he analyzes. Leclair's style was very readable, and I was intrigued by his framework, but I found some of his conclusions eye-rolly, given his sample size. I posted this one because I think Library of Congress books are fun, but I didn't add it to my Goodreads.

BLACK TIDE - ★★★½ This one had me rolling my eyes in the first couple chapters, and I was afraid I wasn't going to like it, but once Fucked Up Shit Started Happening, the momentum really picked up and didn't stop--I blitzed through it way past my bedtime on a school night. It was fucked up and weird and tense and bloody pull-no-punches horror, but it ALSO made me laugh, and I loved our two fuck-ups surviving the apocalypse together. NOTE: Dogs (and Gulls) Are Not Safe, and the cast is small enough that it matters a lot :( if you can't stomach animal harm/death, skip this.

A HALF-BUILT GARDEN - 81/338 pages read; will report back. Enjoying it so far! Glad I put it on my NaNo prep reading list, though not quite for the reasons I planned--the reflections on motherhood as well as parenting outside the binary have been interesting, so far (and that's relevant for my own haunted house endeavors!). A much gentler ride than BLACK TIDE, and the immersive tech reminds me of Murderbot's world, just Earthbound.

Overall! Fabulous month for reading! Anytime I think "wow I need A Break™ from writing or life," this is the type of reading I mean--where I can spend a couple weeks annihilating books within a day to Refill the Words Reservoir.

Under the Cut: A Note About ~*★Stars★*~

Historically, I have been Very Bad™ about assigning things Star Ratings, because it's so Vibes Heavy for me and therefore Contingent Upon my Whims. I am refining this as I figure out my wrap up posts (epiphany of last month: I don't like that stars are Odd, because that makes three the midpoint and things are rarely so truly mid for me)(I have hacked my way around this with a ½). Here is, generally, how I conceptualize stars:

★ - This was Bad. I would actively recommend that you do NOT read this one, no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not worth the slog. Save Yourself, It's Too Late For Me. Book goes in the garbage (donate bin).

★★ - This was Not Good. I would not recommend it, but it wasn't a total waste or wash--something in here held my interest/kept my attention/sparked some joy. I will not be rereading this ever. Save Yourself (Or Join Me In Suffering, That Seems Like A Cool Bonding Activity).

★★★ - This was Good/Fine/Okay/Meh. I don't care about this enough to recommend it one way or another. Perfectly serviceable book, held my interest, I probably enjoyed myself (or at least didn't actively loathe the reading). I don't have especially strong feelings. You probably don't need to save yourself from this one--if it sounds like your jam, give it a shot! Just didn't resonate with me particularly powerfully. I probably won't reread this unless I'm after something in particular.

★★★½ - I liked this! I'll probably recommend it if I know it matches someone's vibes or specific requests, but I didn't commit to a star rating on Goodreads. More likely to reread, but not guaranteed.

★★★★ - I really enjoyed this!! I would recommend it (sometimes with caveats about content warnings or such--I tend to like weird fucked up funny shit, and I don't have many hard readerly NO's). Not a perfect book for me by any means, but Very Good. This is something I would reread! Join me!!

★★★★★ - I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS, IT REWIRED MY BRAIN, WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION (content warning caveats still apply--see 4-star disclaimer). Excellent book, I'll reread it regularly, I'll buy copies for all my friends, I'll try to convince all of Booklr to read it, PLEASE join me!!

2. The Alien Moondae on the left is from the storyboard. As I soon saw the storyboard, I felt overwhelming despair from the talent so I tried my best to replicate it through drawing (on the right)

3. This episode left an impression on me when I read the original, so I had a lot of trouble with Moondae's psychological portrayal. As with every important episode, each stage of writing and editing was engraved in my mind, so when I closed my eyes before going to bed, I would replay the manuscript in my head from the first cut. I would like to thank the PD and assistant writers once again… I also remember having many discussions with Jang Jin. The same goes for directing the title, how and to what extent Moondae's facial expressions are shown, how to reveal emotions in parts where facial expressions are not shown… etc… Personally, I put a lot of effort into the effects of the flashback cuts.

4. The gummy snack that Ahyeon brought is the same ones that he had in episode 16. It seems like he chose that one since Moondae liked those the most among the snacks shared so far

5. Just like Sejin’s last post, Jangjin writes down the entire text in the chat room, even the parts that aren’t used. Every time I received a confirmation, I was surprised by how realistic it was…

6. There are many other things I paid attention to, and I worked hard to include them in the manuscript, so I hope they were conveyed to readers as well~~! happy new year Please enjoy the next episode as well!

I feel like I've climbed a big mountain.. As always, but especially for this episode, I received a lot of help from Soheun in setting the tone. When working under limited time with lots of details, there were parts that I missed, but Soheun looked at them with the reader's eyes and caught them again. In the process, there were times when the interpretation was completely different and I had to redraw them or discuss one or two minor scenes for a long time. It must not have been easy for the animator to carefully look over the storyboard with a lot of work and limited time. It wasn't easy for me either, reading the original and adapting it, to shake off the first image that was stuck in my mind, understand the collaborator's interpretation, and find my rhythm again. That's how much we both thought this episode was important and wanted to convey the emotions the original gave us. I enjoyed this process a lot. I have often used the phrase ‘The beauty of collaboration’

The process of thinking about where to show as a mirror that reflects a good original work was truly the fun of collaboration. From the beginning, the episode was planned to be contained in 2.2 parts, and while the previous episode was finished in a quick pace, this time we utilized a lot of POV, flashbacks, narration, cuts, close-ups, etc. to capture Moondae's psychological state. For visual effects, we utilized lighting, shadows, effects, etc., and Soheon took extra care in lighting and flashback effects.

Let me introduce two parts that I discussed with So-Heon to maximize the visual effects…

1. Flashback scenes

The two flashback scenes in episode 59, the scene where he recalls the performances he has done and the meetings with fans, I wanted to give the feeling that everything was shattered like a dream at night with the sound of a fist being struck.

In the case of Moondae recalling his fans in the same episode, Soheun had the opinion that it would be nice to feel like all kinds of affection and support towards oneself are passing through one's hands like grains of sand or smoke. So, the images were corrected to give the overall impression of waving.

2. Expression of the 'Original Park Moondae'

This is also expressed in the original work, but the suspicion about Moondae, the original owner of the body, grows, and Park Moondae (Ryu Gunwoo) distrusts him, and the misunderstanding is raised again through the explanatory note. I don't know how you will feel, but as I continued to read that part, my sympathy for Moondae grew a lot. Even if he had originally planned to drop out, I wondered what school was like for Moondae, who had to leave school without being able to completely explain the unpleasant incident, and who had no adults who could stand by his side. While thinking about the same thing, I ultimately decided to direct with the idea that this is the kind of previous Moondae that Moondae currently has. It is also an image that I came up with while thinking about the development of the novel, so it will also bring various feelings to readers who read the novel.

I wanted to wake up. I think it's because I've been working with this mindset since the storyboard, but when Soheun's drawings and directing were added, I felt a bit touched. It was a scene that I had prepared and nervously for since the beginning of the webtoon, so I think I spent the next three weeks feeling anxious and nervous until the end….ㅠㅠ After we've overcome a big hurdle… We'll run to another big hurdle. What are some of your favorite horror movies? And which ones you like to recommend to people?

Holy shit! This question makes me so happy but also so…wow, how do I organize this! How can I narrow them down…there’s just so many horror movies I definitely love and would recommend. The different sub-genres within horror and what’s the best to watch from those was considered, but that leaves out some solid horror movies that don’t fit into any particular sub-genre. So I kind of went chronologically, throughout the years…I might be wrong in some of these years, so please forgive me for that. I’ll also definitely have left off a lot of really good ones, so excuse the incompleteness of the list.

So, as mentioned on my other post, gotta start back in the roaring 20’s, when horror really kind of hit the mainstream, with 1922’s Nosferatu. It’s going to seem really boring if you go in expecting a gore-fest like what we get now, but I think it’s a really stand up film for it’s time, with a great atmosphere and feel to it.

All of the classic Universal monster film’s from the 30’s should be checked out. They’re classics for a reason and the horror genre really owes a lot to these early films.

As far as I know, the original that came out then is impossible to find, but you can find versions of 1932’s Freaks and it’s definitely worth checking out. That movie kind of fucked me up, though a lot of the horror in it was the mass exploitation of people who dared to differ from the norm.

As far as I know, the 30’s version of Sweeney Todd was the first time it was on film? Definitely worth checking out, comparing and contrasting to the Johnny Depp version of it. Both are decent in their own ways (though, of course, the stage renditions are the best).

To me, Son of Frankenstein, while considered a horror at the time, was the first horror comedy. At least, I very much have that feel watching it.

While there were a lot of 40’s horror films, the only one I still remember and enjoy is the Abbott and Costello film I recommended in the previous post.

In my opinion, the 50’s had a lot of really great horror films. Watching them now, they do feel campy and kind of B-grade, but I really do think that is part of the appeal to them and it’s also fun to see some of the tropes in horror that are still used to this day. So from that era, I recommend Donovan’s Brain, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, anything with Vincent Price, and Teenagers from Outer Space.

1960 brought us Psycho. Any horror fan should check out Psycho – I consider it a classic and a must watch. I also think that might have been the year The Little Shop of Horrors first came out on film. The original wasn’t bad, though I recommend the later version with Rick Moranis. It had a really great feel to it and was a little more fun than the original.

From the rest of the 60’s…oh, you guys know this one was going to be on here. Rosemary’s Baby, natch. Night of the Living Dead is also one that was obviously going to show up on this list because again – should be considered must-watch for any horror movie lover. Romero and horror – goes hand in hand and especially in terms of zombie tropes…it set up a lot of those. For a surprise from the 60’s though, I do recommend Blood and Black Lace.

The 70’s were great for horror. I definitely recommend the 70’s Wicker Man. If you start to watch Wicker Man and you see Nicolas Cage….press back or do whatever you need to do to turn it off. Then go watch the Wicker Man without Nicolas Cage. You will thank me for that tidbit of advice. Tales from the Crypt, The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, the OG Carrie, The Omen, the OG The Hills Have Eyes, the OG Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, I Spit on Your Grave, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Black Christmas, and The Amityville Horror were all fantastic movies from that decade. Plus, the Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchises started in this decade and I really recommend those franchises as a whole. Did both of them have some terrible sequels/prequels/remakes? Oh boy, did they! But overall, the franchises are solid. Young Frankenstein is a solid horror comedy and while technically a miniseries, Salem’s Lot from that time is still something I rewatch at least every year or two.

The 80’s brought Freddy fucking Krueger and boy, do I recommend watching the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise. The Chucky franchise also started at that time and I love the really kind of campy, horror comedy feel to that franchise, with some genuinely scary scenes. The Evil Dead is a classic for a reason and definitely a must watch. Just watch every movie in the franchise because at the worst, they’re hilarious, at their best they’re so, so GOOD. Pretty sure Poltergeist is also from the 80’s but if I’m wrong, it’s late 70’s. I love The Lost Boys, at least the original one. Motel Hell was weird as fuck but pretty decent horror comedy? My favourite horror comedy from the 80’s though has to be April Fool’s Day – definitely one I recommend everyone see at least once. Fright Night from the 80’s was also really good and I actually also enjoy the remake with Colin Farrell. The 80’s also brought a lot of Stephen King adaptions and where I love his writing, I watched a lot of them – Christine, Cujo, Silver Bullet, Children of the Corn (the OG one is my favourite, though the remake wasn’t absolutely fucking horrific), Pet Sematary, Creepshow…notice The Shining is missing? It’s because I actually don’t really like the movie. I found the book more genuinely scary. One that does have to be mentioned but which I will personally NEVER watch again – Cannibal Holocaust. Don’t eat going into it and be aware that it gets very, VERY violent. If you consider Gremlins a horror movie, it’s on there. I just say it’s a classic Christmas movie you should definitely check out around the season. I watch it every Christmas season.

From the 90’s, starting with a miniseries but the version of IT that still scares me the most? The 90’s miniseries with Tim Curry. It will legit make me cry but that’s because clowns freak me out royally. But legit, the 90’s and the 00’s was the era I really was just getting into horror, so I struggle to figure out what is me viewing it with a lot of nostalgia and love and what is actually good so I’m going bullet points for these decades:

Se7en – even non-horror fans know THAT scene from this movie, let’s be real, and I think that makes it have to be on this list.

Village of the Damned

From Dusk Till Dawn

The first Scream came out this decade, as did a couple of the others, but please watch all the franchise except the newest ones. I watched them, not as great as the original run but 1-4…fucking amazing and probably my favourite horror franchise personally.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

The first Blade movie came out in this decade, but I recommend all three.

The Faculty

Urban Legend

House on Haunted Hill

The Sixth Sense really did have an amazing twist, though it looks cheap and played out rewatching or looking back on it. For the time period though – it was an amazing twist.

Sleepy Hollow

American Psycho

Final Destination. Any of the movies in the franchise kind of give me the happy but the first one is probably the best.

Jeeper’s Creepers

Misery

The Leprechan franchise is great horror comedy. I love Warwick Davis.

I recommend the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, only because it led to the show and the show was so, so precious to me.

The Silence of the Lambs, naturally.

Candyman, also naturally.

The Frighteners was a fun horror comedy. I just like seeing bad things happen to Michael J. Fox

Sometimes They Come Back

Cannibal! The Musical is frigging fantastic and a great black comedy

First Impressions of Animorphs!

I'm listening to the Animorphs series while I work, through Animorphs Aloud - a fan made reading of the series. Here are my first impressions/random thoughts about them! Spoilers below if you haven't read them.

Book 12.5: The Andalite Chronicles (Part 2)

Oh no...the second they mentioned that Alloran and Arbron were last seen as Taxxons but it'd been over the two hour morph limit...one of them is gonna be stuck as a Taxxon, aren't they?

Sensible plan Elfangor, good choices

Arbron definitely ate that guy. Also this voice acting is very good, Arbron sounds gloomy and a little hysterical

Man I wish human larval forms could be set to work cleaning and doing menial chores, instead of just lying there and screaming. And then they'd cocoon and transform into fully functional adults instead of going through the awkward teenager stage

Ah fuck...totally called it. Arbron is a Taxxon forever now. That SUCKS man, I quite liked him. At least Tobias is stuck as something pretty cool, being a Taxxon seems like hell

As someone who is completely incapable of estimating speeds, three thousand miles per hour sounds totally believable

My favourite things about my Twisted Wonderland Mafia AU

-Few characters know that Yuu is from another world

This element was the one I worried about the most, since where Yuu comes from truly affected the fanfic's set up. I've thought about this AU for a few months before sitting down to write it, and I flip flopped between canon Yuu (isekai'd to the world) and completely not canon (Yuu is just from the world). Ultimately, I'm very happy I picked the first option and decided to keep it a big secret. I am a huge fan of characters not from the world and hiding it from everyone (see: my love of the Awakening Trio in Fates).

-The story has Yuu/Everyone instead of my usual platonic route

I truly love writing platonic relationships, especially in Twisted Wonderland with Yuu, but I cannot tell you how excited I am that the characters can overtly flirt with Yuu. I have so many non-platonic head canons floating in my brain! Can't wait to share a few with everyone!

-Poly/Open Relationships

As someone who is a multi-shipper I find OT3 or even open relationships fun to write, mostly because I don't have to narrow my focus to one specific ship the entire time. Of course, I have some ships I'm firmly for (RookVil is my OTP), having freedom is my most valued part of creatively writing. I like how this fic makes me feel as though I can play looser with many story elements that I wouldn't do if I was writing canonically.

-World building/Festivals

From the first moment I created this story, I wanted it to be University AU. This meant I was less beholden to canon and free to set the stage anywhere I wished. This has allowed me to flesh out the world differently and add in my own ideas/concepts. I'm having a lot of fun with the festivals, which are numerous because I was thinking about how many festivals happen in Japan. Especially over the summer months.

-They're all Mafia

Despite how I don't have enough violent scenes as I'd like, I guarantee our boys are off doing shady things in order to "protect" their territory. I'm also very weak to the idea of Yuu befriending the most Powerful People in this world accidentally. It can also lend to the sexiest scenes as everyone is confident and aware they're both attractive and powerful. Poor Yuu, they haven't seen anything yet.

-Opportunity for Dramatic Reveals

My favourite trope of all time is a well written Dramatic Reveal of identity, either to the audience or to the characters. It doesn't matter. All I want is set up so I can knock down that dramatic reveal like a set of dominoes. This fic has allowed me that opportunity and I'm going to use it a little bit. I won't do it all the time as it has to depend on the tone I want for the story, but know it will happen.

-Yuu meeting Jade and Floyd

Before I wrote this fic I wrote a different version of the scene where Jade and Floyd meet Yuu. However, since that idea was set in a more canon universe (everyone knows Yuu is from another world, Yuu already knows them, etc.) I couldn't use it for this fic. Also, I deleted the file LOL. Anyways, I loved the vibe of that scene enough to recreate it! It's one of my favourite scenes because I had the strongest visual image in my mind.

Also as a small add on, I am in love with the scene of Floyd biting Yuu.

-Yuu meeting and befriending Malleus

I love Malleus so much. I was excited to follow similar elements from canon (Yuu meets him as a mysterious stranger, they befriend him, they find out later who he really is). I was also excited to have other characters know Yuu is basically a dimension hopping alien. It gave me freedom to have another character besides the teachers be a source Yuu can blatantly ask questions.

An add on: I had multiple ideas for how Malleus reveals is identity to Yuu. Shame I couldn't use all of them, but I like where I landed.

-Other people actually like this!!!

Anytime I plan an AU that I know is a little off the wall, a little skewed too far off the side, I think "Okay, this is going to be for me and maybe like two other people". Of course, I always write for myself but it's very flattering and wonderful to see others enjoy my ideas too. Really, I am so appreciative of everyone who has told me they enjoy this story though their kudos, comments, and bookmarks.

Transformers: Prime headcanons??? What???

In all fairness, I'm actually not sure whether or not I'll ever do fanfics of TFP. But I would like to do a bit of fan art at the very least (I've sketched Optimus Prime, like. Once. So.)

Anyways while watching the series through to what I believe is now the end of the Knockout and Breakdown 'bit' (please be gentle on spoilers we're like three quarters of the way through season 2) I actually had some "headcanons" to relay on the matters. Take these with a grain of salt for the love of God, I have no idea what the TFP fandom is like yet so *holds up holy Allspark cross* cease fire, heathens!

I'd say Knockout and Breakdown, at least in TFP's sense, seem pretty loose as a couple. I definitely think there was couple shit happening (iirc that's like canon in some comic too), but TFP specifically seems to convey that they're super casual, bordering a 'friendship with benefits' kind of relationship. KO has his little drag racing hobby, Brekadown has his...whatever the hell he and Bulkhead do, thing. Which I guess constitutes as a hobby. But I think they're super loose for a reason, that being...Knockout seems like a very... *cough cough* open lover. He gets around. I mean c'mon he basically hit on Prime, Starscream, AND Ratchet thus far. I'm willing to wager the boy keeps the line open for a reason and that's to keep things interesting. Maybe he and Breakdown are poly, and looking for a third, but it might also just be that KO is, in fact, a slut. (The latter might better explain his indifference to Breakdown's...*cough cough* permanent "break-down" thisisakidsshowthisisakidsshowthisisakidsshowwhyisitsoDARK)

Okay so apparently most people in the fandom headcanon (or it's canon, fuck if I know) they've got beds - uh, forgive me, 'berths' - that are just like, metal plates?? God that's so boring, they're super highly advanced alien machines! PERSONALLY, I think it would be way cooler if they had something like a levitating laser net-like bed, something strong enough to support a Cybertronian's full weight (I'm actually not sure what that is but it's probably a lot) and is still open enough that any bot can lay in any position without squishing any of those parts that stick out (wings, doors, exhausts, other random bits of metal, etc). Think like the clouds in My Little Pony that only pegasi can sit on; it's a material designed to suspend heavy pieces of metal in the air comfortably and efficiently. One day I hope to actually draw this concept, I think it would be a really fun project.

Okay so the finding an alt mode to turn into process is so weird and unexplained in TFP, so I am drawing attention to it. This was like a major plothole that they never explained but I want to take a crack at it. There's two options I'd see as plausible for a Cybertronian to get their alt form, and honestly they could go hand-in-hand (uhh...servo-in-servo? I need to make a list of what all the terms are lol). The first, or the "baseline" for a bot is finding the KIND of alt mode, which is what you get your main design from. Before this it's just that blank-slate empty primer "who and what am I?" stage, until you've felt that idea for what your alt mode is going to be (and this can probably be defined specifically from what side of the war you're on too, so like you're in base primer and choose to be a Decepticon, you'll get some form of wings in your design, etc). But you don't have an alt yet still, you just have the parts and the colors and everything you need...to FIND it. And the second phase is the finding it. I think for that, it's less like a "let's find a vehicle I like" and more like "let me find the vehicle that is my soulmate". Like they're destined to find that one very specific vehicle that is in their design, like finding their other half. It's all destiny fate-written shit. It's kind of the only thing that could explain how characters have very obvious pieces of their alt mode on them before they've gotten their alt modes (examples being Skyquake and Dreadwing, spider-bitch I can never spell the name of, and Smokescreen). They know it in their sparks, they just have to see it to be able to understand how to find it within themselves.

Not a headcanon but a super funny observation while watching the series: Prime is so selfless and good-hearted, if he was a fanfiction writer he'd make nothing but fluffy light-hearted fix-it fics where everybody is redeemed and no one dies and everybody gets to live happily ever after.
