Even after she leaves, their interaction preys on his mind. Over the next few weeks something starts to shift between them but Patrick can't help but be curious as to what started it all off and what Ronnie's thinking.

Ruth can scream. She can wail. She can effortlessly hit the kind of notes that Axl Rose has to warm up for, jumping from pitch to pitch with the kind of abandon that seems like precision. And she knows how to dial it back, following Patrick's lead with an obvious ease that startles Stevie. When their voices meld together, Ruth matching him beat for beat, note by note, Stevie can't help herself.

She catches Mutt's eye, tilting her head towards the vocalists, and bites back a grin when the two of them join in.

And the funny thing is: this shouldn't be so effortlessly easy. The four of them have never played together before.

Voting her into the band, though, is the easiest decision that Stevie's ever made.

gentle (Wait for me to come home) He relearns how to adjust his touch to something more gentle. To keep his thrusts calibrated for someone smaller, lighter. To expect that the hands touching him won’t be calloused and firm, but soft and featherlight. He likens it to returning to a favorite childhood hangout. Somewhere that feels familiar, with mostly good memories, but you know you don’t exactly belong there anymore.

hands (Buddie stargazing fic) Evan scratches the back of his neck, where the grass tickles his skin, before pillowing both hands under his head and crossing his ankles.

please (from S6 midseason spec) Eddie stares, scrunching his eyebrows for a moment, then glances up at Buck with a look he can’t quite decipher. He’s not upset, but doesn’t exactly look pleased either. “That’s- that’s great, Buck. Good for them. I’m glad you were able to help.”

stop (from Buck moving into Eddie's fic) The racing thoughts abruptly stop, replaced with only one. One absolutely absurd memory.

sigh (from [redacted] for @alysiswriting) With a resigned sigh, he finishes filling his plate with an array of raw vegetables, Linda’s BLT dip, and something he only knows is wrapped in phyllo dough. For good measure he takes a second one because he knows Buck’s been eyeing them up. Eddie would gladly hand it over, but he actually wants to try it for himself.

love (from [redacted] for @elvensorceress) Buck enters the apartment, his movements still slow, like he’s floating. Buoyed by the love and contentment that only comes from spending an evening at the Diaz house.

scream (also from the [redacted for Jenwyn]) The hollow ache in his chest that’s always there unexpectedly feels deeper. Wider. Like it may actually break through and tear him apart. How can such emptiness feel so massive? As if his ribs are slowly cracking open, snapping one by one, stretching the skin while crushing his lungs and heart. He wants to scream or cry or something. Anything. But it’s all stuck, gathered in a tangle that refuses to budge.

stars (Buddie stargazing) The line goes dead, leaving him alone with the fireflies. Pinpricks of stars are beginning to emerge in the night sky, forming faint outlines of near recognizable constellations. If she could see them, he wonders if Maddie would see the same sky where she is. Maybe.

home (Stevie/Ruth) Stevie doesn’t need a lot in life, but there’s something to be said for a company car that will take her where she wants. And right now she wants to get home, to the person who will gladly carry every ache and burden she has. Because no matter the geographical location, Ruth is home.

peace (Fashion & Baseball) Patrick wishes his mind would string together something more coherent than flashes of partial words he can’t seem to access. The single language available is David, David, David on an endless loop. He looks relaxed, holding his fingers up in a peace sign, dressed in a black sweater patterned with white flowers, tight black jeans and sunglasses that are probably worth more than Patrick’s car.

tugs (I know all your Secrets) Patrick greedily claims David’s mouth and brackets his palms on David’s waist, tugging their hips together. There’s a renewed urgency to his movements, signaling to David that Patrick wants control now.

sleep (David/Stevie The Honeymoon coda) During the day she parades around with a see-if-I-care attitude, armed with a razor sharp wit, ready to cut whoever gets too close. At night though, fucked out and fast asleep, she tells a different story. It’s present in the way her mussed up raven hair fans across the pillow.

whisper (David/Patrick mall pretzel Patrick) He lets his head loll to the side and shoots her the best glare he can manage. When he’s satisfied he’s glared enough, David drapes his arm across his forehead and knits his brows together. “Stevie.” It comes out part whine, part whisper, all desperation.

fall (Buck moving into Eddie's) Or Eddie holding Buck in the aftermath of Abby coming back, letting him sob and fall apart until he exhausted himself and Eddie put him to bed.

reach (Twylexis) “‘Lexis!” Twyla bolts up in bed, orienting herself to the room lit only by a patch of moonlight. She reaches out to the other half of the bed, grasping at air, and it takes her a moment to realize — to remember — she’s alone because Alexis is away. This always happens the first night, but she still isn’t used to it.

cries (Stevie/Ruth) There’s an uncomplicated sense of satisfaction when her key slides into the lock and she pushes the door open. After it clicks shut, there’s a clang from the kitchen accompanied by a string of curses that makes Stevie chuckle. Because really if she doesn’t, she might cry at this point.

sweet (Fashion & Baseball) “Oh, just look at all my sweet boys!” Marcy Brewer coos in the direction of Patrick, Andy, Ted, Mutt and David, all standing in the grass outside the Brewer house.

understand (magical realism cat!Buck) “What does that matter?” Buck asks, tilting his head to the side like he genuinely doesn’t understand. “You’ve been raising him this whole time, you’re an amazing father. Gods, Eddie, have you even looked at your son lately?”

longing (David/Patrick Olive Branch) It‘s as if his efforts to remain professional had wrapped around the remnants of despair and longing only to fray and knot them all together.

night (magical realism cat!Buck) Ana slips out the door, turning to smile again and blow him a kiss. The deep red imprint floats through the autumn air, landing on his cheek soft like a butterfly. Then she’s gone in a swirl of lavender smoke and fallen leaves, fading into the night.

blue (magical realism cat!Buck) He can already feel the eyes on him before he closes the door. The bright blue orbs, almost electric with their intensity.

fear (Wait for me to come home) Buck had let him do that. He taught Eddie how to want without shame or fear of rejection. Shannon doesn’t know that Eddie though. Afraid of driving her away from Christopher again he had immediately shut that part of himself down.

couch (Buck moving into Eddie's) People wouldn’t see video game tournaments on the couch, baking cookies with Christopher, Eddie telling him there’s no one he trusts more with his son.

wall (Buddie stargazing) He doesn’t want to, not yet. Out here is calm and relaxing. Inside is stuffy and constricting. It makes his muscles tense, like he needs to move. And in there he’s not allowed to move the way he wants. Mom and Dad have so many fragile things lining the walls, Evan wonders if they aren’t secretly inhabiting a museum. At any rate, as parents, he’s pretty sure their focus is in the wrong place.

SUMMARY: Ruth gets separated from her friends on NYE, but the night manages to go up from there.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: Okay, I might be biased, since this was written for me, but I love that this fic puts Stevie and Ruth into situations and tropes that we don't usually see for them. It's a breath of fresh air for these two, and the momentum towards the end is so fun!

SUMMARY: On a January weekend, as a storm rolls in, Alexis Rose rolls into Schitt’s Creek too, much to Twyla’s surprise.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I love the childhood friends trope, and we don't have enough of it in this corner of the Schitt's Creek fandom! This is such a fun take on Alexis and Twyla, haunting and moody and full of a quiet, hopeful optimism all at the same time.

SUMMARY: Alexis hums her appreciation, letting her eyes fall closed while Twyla repeats the circuitous route, and breathing in the blend of lavender and lemon oil her wife insisted upon for “calm and good luck”. The temporary serenity only lasts for three or four passes until a light knock at the door interrupts. She doesn’t try to hide her instant pout when the gentle pressure disappears and she’s forced to open her eyes again.

Dr. Rist breezes inside, far too perky in Alexis’s opinion. Perhaps it’s a good sign. Despite her nerves, Alexis plasters her PR smile on, and clasps Twyla’s hand – the only tell she’ll allow to indicate she’s worried while they wait to find out what kind of life changing the appointment will be.

“Well,” Dr. Rist says. “Alexis. Twyla. Sorry to keep you waiting. Let’s begin, shall we?”

Rec [written by doingthemost]: Mind the tags on this one, as there's some medical angst a fair amount of hurt/comfort, but if you want to feel warm and taken care of just like Alexis and Twyla take care of each other in this beautiful lil' fic, look no further.

“Sure,” David reaches for the next button. Patrick’s pulse jumps beneath his fingertips and David forces himself to remember to breathe, to pull air into his lungs, as if every cell is not alight.

“Really, thank you,” Patrick says softly, “for everything.”

David’s knuckles brush over his sternum. His skin is soft here, hair sparse, freckles faded in the absence of sun. He wants to see him in the light.

“I don’t mind.” It draws up memories of London. Their cluttered flat, the smell of paint undercut by the sweet spring air, Patrick arching impatiently beneath his hands, a deliberate unbuttoning. “Sorry my hands are so cold,” David says, another button slipping free, “terrible circulation.”

Patrick chuckles, “David. I know you’re a vampire.”

Headcanons: Alexis Rose, David Rose and Stevie Budd Taking Care of You When You're Sick

Relationship(s): Alexis Rose x gn!reader (romantic or platonic), David Rose x gn!reader (romantic or platonic), Stevie Budd x gn!reader (romantic or platonic)

Warnings: Reader has a common cold, which gets ever so slightly gross at points, if you squint. Possible grammatical oversights because I'm sick myself. (Let me know if I need to add any)

(A/N: This is my third cold of the year. I have no idea why I keep getting sick, but at least it's inspired me to write more than I did last year, I guess! The first time I got sick, I wrote headcanons and a ficlet for Yellowjackets, Community, Dead Poets Society and Scott Pilgrim characters taking care of a sick reader. This time around, I felt motivated to write for Schitt's Creek. I haven't finished the show (I'm on season 5, I believe), and as of writing this A/N I haven't added it to my fandom list yet. But, anyway, it's nice to pretend that these guys are my friends or lovers who are taking care of me in my feeble state. I made it ambiguous because I figured more people could get more out of this, plus it didn't feel necessary to make it solely romantic or platonic. Anyway, feel free to send in Schitt's Creek requests, especially for Stevie and Alexis, my beloveds.)

ALEXIS

The word ‘ew’ comes up a lot.

Alexis 100% keeps her distance*.

She’ll be in the room with you, but she will have one foot out of the door.

At some point, you will ask her for a box of tissues, and she will throw them at you from across the room like she’s feeding something she’s afraid of.

If she hits you in the head with it, she will offer up an apology.

*She’ll work up the courage to inch closer and closer to you, until eventually she’s at your bedside.

She’ll spend a lot of time on her phone to the point that it feels insulting that she’s blatantly ignoring you when you’re feeling this awful, BUT she is actually spending a lot of time looking into the best ways to treat your cold.

She might get distracted by some gossipy headlines between medical articles, though.

You will be able to tell when she audibly gasps and reads out the headline to you with shock and glee.

You’ll have to tell her if you want anything because she will not, at least to begin with, take initiative.

She tries to get out of going to the drug store herself, and she asks Ted, Twyla, her parents, David and Stevie if they can go on her behalf because she claims to be too busy taking care of you to go herself.

But, she’ll go herself when no one ends up being available, and she’ll ask you not to die while she’s gone.

If you’re asleep when she gets back, she’ll repeat your name, poke you and shake you until you wake up, startled and slightly irritated.

But, it’s just because she’s worried you’re dead/dying, which you are absolutely not allowed to do on her watch.

It comes from a place of caring about you <3

According to her, it would be ‘super embarrassing if you died from a cold’.

She’ll proudly show you everything she bought from the drug store, and she’ll buy you an unnecessary present because she knows that receiving a gift would make her feel better if she were ill.

By the end of it, she actually kind of enjoys taking care of you, and she’ll take great pride in your recovery.

DAVID

David is very similar to Alexis when it comes to taking care of you.

He will ask you if you’re sure there’s no one else available to take care of you, and he will resort to suggesting people you’ve barely spoken to until he eventually just caves.

Like with Alexis, David will not make an effort to disguise how utterly repulsed he is by you.

He will insult you so many times, mostly without meaning to be so offensive, and he will sheepishly apologise for it when you send him an unimpressed glare.

He’ll keep his distance, not as much as Alexis, but he definitely keeps you at least at an arm’s length.

He ends up stinking of hand sanitiser because of how often he keeps applying it.

If you ask him to get you something, he will do it with a sigh.

Every time you cough or sneeze, he flinches like a brick’s been thrown through the window.

He’ll tuck his nose and mouth under his top if/when you have a coughing or sneezing fit.

He’ll go as far as to offer to make you soup or go to the store so he doesn’t have to be in the same room as you.

But he’ll insist that he just wants to help you feel better.

You do not buy it.

Despite his boredom, he’d feel rude spending too much time on his phone (or you might tell him to get off his phone because you’re bored, and he’d rather not deal with that), so he’ll end up putting a trashy reality show on to distract you from how you’re feeling (and to entertain himself).

Seeing you so under the weather does make him feel genuinely bad for you.

The only reason he accepts his role as your unqualified nurse is because he cares about you, whether or not he clearly expresses that.

But, he does start to think more about you than himself as the day goes on.

Like, he forgets about his own self-pity that he felt about having to spend his day taking care of you.

Regardless of how awful you look and feel, he will tease you about being sick.

Any pity he expresses for you is said with heavy sarcasm and condescension.

You can get back at him by throwing a snotty tissue at him.

It will deeply upset him.

STEVIE

Of the three of these guys, Stevie is the least repulsed by you.

She’s still at least slightly disgusted by you.

But, she’s nowhere near as dramatic about it as Alexis and David are.

She will only slightly hesitate to get near you.

But, it’s more because of her guarded nature as opposed to any aversion to your sickness.

She’d rather not get sick herself, but she won’t go to the lengths that Alexis and David will to avoid it.

A small part of her wouldn’t mind getting sick only because it’d be funny to upset David with it.

Like David, she will make fun of you and laugh at you for being sick, because one of her main love languages is mocking the misfortune of her loved ones.

She will tell you how gross you are, even if it doesn’t actually bother her that much.

She will half-heartedly apologise if you’re obviously not amused by it.

Of Alexis, David and herself, she is the most proactive, which might be surprising considering that, when she’s working, she rarely bothers to get up and do things unless prompted, and even then she’s pretty hesitant.

But, she’ll offer to go to the drug store before you have to ask her.

She’ll insist that you’ll feel better after a glass of wine, but it’s obvious she just wants a glass of wine, too.

She’s very attentive to you.

Sure, she’ll go on her phone, especially when you’re sleeping, but she won’t neglect you.

She enjoys your company, which she doesn’t express in any way besides the fact that she will have conversations with you that last for hours.

Like with David, you’ll probably end up watching some dumb TV show to distract/entertain yourselves.

She will take it upon herself to remember when you have to take your medicine, and she’ll be great at reminding you to drink something when she notices you haven’t in a while.

Of course she’ll say it in her own Stevie way that makes it seem like she doesn’t really care (but you know her well enough to know that she does).

“You might wanna drink something if you don’t want to sound like the Babadook anymore.”

Stevie’s concern for you and your recovery may not be at all overt, but she does sincerely want to see you get better.

After all, just sitting with you in your room all day gets pretty boring when you’re not feeling like yourself and you keep falling asleep.

Patrick Brewer, newly single and fresh off a break up, has himself a vacation fling, that leaves him wanting more (HEA, of course!).

Patrick's barely-there-brows pull together. “Hey, I’m doing you a favor here—”

And that's it; that's what completely sends David over the edge.

“—I'm sorry, doing me a favor?” David cuts him off before that gets any further. His voice is doing that shrill thing he's apparently well-known for, but he can replay the memory and hate himself for it later. Right now, he's pissed. “How about you do me a favor and take your little hockey bat and sh—”

“O-ookay!” Stevie half-yells, literally stomping her way between them. Her angry expression turns to David first: “David, he is your only shot at competing this year. Literally your only option.” She turns that look in the other direction: “Patrick, this is your only shot at competing again at all. Literally no one else on this planet is desperate enough to teach an NHL retiree how to dance on ice.” She folds her arms over her chest. “So, either suck it up now or quit.”

Stevie enlists David's help to plan a surprise party for Ruth. It goes about as well as one would expect.
