Modern Newsie headcannons: NYC edition

i know the newsies live in nyc but a lot of the headcannons aren’t about them living in nyc so i came up with some

- Race sleeps a lot on the subway, mostly when he’s with albert cuz he knows albert will get them off at the right place. When they’re standing on the subway, and race is leaning his head on albert’s shoulder, al will keep his arm around Race’s waist so he doesn’t fall. If he’s asleep while they’re sitting down, albert will make sure his head doesn’t hit the wall.

- race and al use one pair of air pods on the subway to listen to the same music

- jack hates the subway (country boy at heart)

- finch will always ask someone if they would get up for crutchie to sit down if they’re are no empty seats

- race just knows the manhattan subway and streets by heart (native new yorker lookin ass)

- david carries hand sanitizer with him for after using the subway cuz you don’t know where everyone’s hands have been (the other newsies catch on cuz it’s smart)

- david is TERRIBLE at navigating the subway system. it’s overwhelming to him. he has cried while trying to figure out where they’re supposed to go when going somewhere new and jack takes over and never lets him navigate again. (unless he really wants to)

- race fanning albert while they wait for the subway (it’s hot as fuck down there)

- i know a very popular hc is that one of the newsies (usually jack) has a van, but realistically, these mfs don’t own cars 😭

- albert and jack will almost always take the stairs over the escalator

- race has fallen asleep alone on the subway and ended up somewhere completely different than where he was headed, which is why he now usually only sleeps if he’s with someone else

- most of the newsies live in lower manhattan (duh), but some of them live uptown north of central park. jack and crutchie live in the bowery with medda. the jacobs live in the lower east side (many jewish families settled there when they moved to nyc). races family lived in east harlem, but they moved to lower manhattan when race was a baby. spot and elmer are roommates (they live in brooklyn)

- race family is the classic italian roman catholic family

- david, sarah, and les are first generation immigrants from poland

- finch has picked up a pigeon off the streets on multiple occasions

- most of the newsies have never really left the city

- you know the newsies are constantly joining broadway lotteries

- race works at the broadway dance center (sky flaherty core)

- albert has no patience for slow walkers, he weaves in between people. he always looks like he’s on a mission.

i can’t sleep so… newsies modern era headcanons?!?!

- race like… is a little bitch. but not in the 1899 15/16 year old boy way, but rather the 2024 15/16 year old boy who makes so many morally incorrect jokes but he actually makes them funny

- going off of that he completely RUINS the humor of all of the others (namely crutchie)

- speaking of crutchie. i believe he gets heavily involved in online discourse surrounding human rights, and whenever he is literally done with the person he adds a “:)” at the end of his statements to psyche them out.

- jack does art commissions, but ONLY for his friends. although he silently judges some requests and just avoids them like the plague until they forget about it

- davey has an astigmatism so he technically doesn’t need to wear glasses all the time because he can still see, but whenever jack wants to show him a drawing on his tablet he stops jack and SEARCHES for those glasses like they could save the world so he could see the drawing without little lines from the light

- katherine is a decorated writer, but she’s very disturbed by the concept of young adult books and booktok and will advocate viciously against them inside of comment sections

- romeo and race share a journal of quotes featuring the groups worst moments… some seem HORRID out of context such as :

“DID HE JUST FUCK HIS LEG???!?” - Albert

“no they don’t deserve them… SHE DREW BLOOD” Davey

“i’m like a floridian who came up to maine for winter” Jack

“50 Shades of Grey is TAME” Katherine

“i’m gonna jump off the stage” Race

“you see… i get scared whenever people put things in my mouth” Crutchie

- sarah goes thrifting to make upcycled fashion looks! like the girl can do anything with a bit of thread and a sewing needle

- on that same note- sarah embroiders designs into all of the groups shoes whenever they start to wear out to get the most use out of them. i imagine some of these designs would include…

race - a wasp holding a cigar (don’t ask i have a vision)

jack - a miniature version of santa fe, or atleast a city skyline

katherine - lyrics to her favorite song and a heart (kath doesn’t wear the shoes again but she gladly keeps them on display in her room)

crutchie - a robotic flamingo (i have reasons)

- race runs track and cross country! although i do think that is a rather popular headcanon

- nobody knew kath until davey met her through debate team. she was the only one with a solid line of reasoning on the other side and in that moment david felt nothing but respect towards her and forced her to join the group.

- speaking of teams- albert and crutchie do robotics!

- albert bought a tattoo gun specifically for jack to tattoo a hyper realistic watch onto his wrist. now every time somebody asks him the time he tries to gaslight the fuck out of them.

- this is my personal favorite atm- spot has picked at the scabs from bug bites on his arms since he was a child, which left him with a bunch of tiny scarred dots across his arms… which is why his nickname is spot.

i have lots more but i literally can’t recount them right now

Which artists I think newsies characters listen to on repeat

Jack Kelly: very old vibes, like not in a bad way old. like I’m talking about Elton John, Billy Joel, or Redbone.

Katherine: definitely something chill, so like Cigarettes After Sex, Laufey, or some underground artist like idk Cruncho or Lyric.(Cruncho and Lyric is actual artists, they are good!)

Davey: definitely shares some what of a same taste with Katherine. But might also listen to Jazz, more specifically Bossa nova, and Latin. But he doesn’t have a specific artist he listens to.

Crutchie: Probably listens to a musical soundtrack on repeat, or just lets the other people choose. But if he has to choose it’s probably indie. So stuff like Sufjan Stevens.

Racetrack: bro probably listens to a lot of things considered “gay,” or queer artists like Chappell Roan, Lady Gaga, or Girl in Red. But also enjoys Radiohead, or Pixies.

Spot Conlon: a lot of punk rock or metal, like Anti Flag, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys or just plays loud obnoxious songs just to piss to people off.

Elmer: probably usually don’t listen to music, and the time when he do, it’s probably being forced to watch cocomelon with Les (which probably is everyone’s inevitable fate with Les)

Albert: enjoys simple rock, or indie rock. Like AC/DC, Cage the Elephant, Pinegrove.

Les: Force everyone to watch cocomelon, or you can catch him singing to a k pop group.

random modern newsies head cannons (with absolutely no evidence or reason) pt. 2

more bc i can!!

Race:

The most aggressive, reckless driver, but is dangerously good at it. Will cut across multiple lanes but has never even scratched a car.

Lied to everyone in his first week of college about his entire life (different lie per person) just for fun. He finally started telling the truth but nobody believes him.

Started a school poker club and promptly got kicked out of it for betting too much, and then winning it every time. (He just wanted a way to make money. The school did not like that).

STEM major. His work is impossible but he never complains about it. Also a dancer (not my hc). He complains about that a lot.

Has worked almost every retail job under the sun. Also complains about that.

Carries around cigarettes for the vibe but rarely smokes them. Just in case anyone else wants one. Has made friends with many random people this way.

Spot:

Brooklyn baby. Cannot drive. Is terrified of it but, when Race tried to teach him, he yelled at everyone and blamed other people for what was definitely his fault. Refuses to admit that.

Played football but seriously injured his knee (explanation for the cane) but doesn't talk about it much. Always comes up with a new reason for the injury that is entirely ridiculous, but since he delivers it with a straight face everybody believes him.

Absolutely no rhythm. Never goes to parties, even though he is in a fraternity (a very chill one, thank you very much). If he's ever at a party, it's because he's a sober contact, and he is the most unsympathetic person when it comes to taking care of drunk people unless it's Race.

Insists on sitting alone in the back of the lecture hall, even if he has friends in his class.

Crutchie:

Also an incredibly reckless driver but HAS gotten into accidents before. (Only twice, both times because he was racing a friend on the highway. Never serious but always stupid).

Very fidgety and usually making noises under his breath/drumming on shit. Drives everybody around him crazy.

The kind of guy to argue with a professor in a lecture, but only when he's sure he's right (which is always).

So many illegal things in his dorm: candles, toaster, air fryer, multiple animals.

Double majoring in a STEM and humanities field, always references one when in classes for the other and confuses everybody, but he sees a connection between them.

I like the idea that he goes to the gym with Albert a lot. (U wld never catch me taking away his disability so in my head he loveeees to bench and is so buff).

Albert:

(a lot of driving hcs. i wrote this in a car). gets so violently carsick. everyone thought he was saying that so he could ride shotgun; they made him ride in the back once and he made them pull over after ten minutes cause he almost hurled. safe to say he is now always shotgun and always playing the worst music.

Played too many sports, got too many concussions, and now is a crazy gym bro.

Peanut allergy. Would rather die than admit this. Has almost died because he forgets to tell servers at restaurants.

Finch:

his shoes are never tied. he never trips over them and refuses to tie them.

has a million weird, artsy minors that sound and should be fake.

floor sitter. is never in a chair.

JoJo:

his shoes are also never tied. he ALWAYS trips over them.

drank coffee, had a panic attack, thought it was a heart attack, and spent an hour in the ER.

also had the same reaction when trying weed for the first time.

Mush:

RIPPING up the dance floor at a party, fully sober too

Everybody's favorite frat bro; super great energy and incredibly respectful

Volunteers at local elementary schools; talks to young children like they're frat bros too.

Blink:

Dorm recluse. His suite mates have called Mush many times just to check that he's still alive in there.

Has no license and hates public transit, so he walks literally everywhere.

Albert is a great cook, a few years after the strike he gets a job cooking at Jacobi’s

Crutchie can bench press other newsies and has beaten Spot Conlon in arm wrestling matches (Spot then flipped the table)

Jack and Davey take a trip to Santa Fe after they get married (no one mention that gay marriage wasn’t legal then, they’re married, shut up)

modern Race smokes weed and knows every line, lyric, and dance move in mean girls

Miss Medda adopts both Jack and Crutchie in every universe

Sarah and Kathrine are gay and in love, they’re married

Race is secretly a genius (modern Race double majors in astrophysics and musical theatre in collage)

it’s impossible for Crutchie to pass an animal without petting it (modern Crutchie works at an animal shelter)

Albert is aroace

Jack’s love language is drawing people, he filled a sketchbook with just Davey

Race and Crutchie are boyfriends, they are also oblivious idiots who were practically dating long before either one confessed and the only reason they aren’t married is because they’re both to chicken to propose

Silly Newsies Headcannons!!!

Most of these came from my current production of newsies! So most of them are about Finch and Mush.

- Modern Albert is either goth or punk, and he has a good amount of facial piercings

- Finch has ADHD (this is cannon cuz i’m playing finch and i have adhd)

- Finch has some sort of disorder that causes chronic pain in his joints (again this is cuz i’m playing finch and this is me fr)

- Finch and Mush are siblings (Finch is the older brother and Mush is the younger sister) and most of Mush’s clothes are Finch’s old clothes

- Specs can’t read (“I hope it’s real bloody with a nice clear picture” mf cannot read so he needs the picture)

- Mush is a lesbian and in love with Katherine (mush in my production says so herself)

- Morris is scared of Finch because Finch always shoots him with his slingshot

- Mush and Specs call Finch a thousand different nicknames that are close to finch but not finch. ex: fence, french, fench, fartch

- Crutchie and Finch are besties

- Finch is not so sure about Jack’s ability to lead a strike (this is pretty cannon based off of his dialogue)

- Finch got his nickname from birds always landing on his shoulder (he’s like a disney princess)

- Modern Race chews gum all the time instead of smoking cigars, it’s like a stim, and Albert carries around a pack of gum just in case Race forgets his

- Most of the newsies didn’t know Jack was an artist

- Jack mixes up the newsies names all the time

- Some of the newsies with a nickname (Finch, Specs, etc.) forgot their actual name

- Finch will pull a newsie’s hat over their eyes and/or knock it off their head

- Race chews on his cigar

- Modern Race wears lipgloss like chapstick

Y’all want some angst? Too bad you’re getting it.

So people love the idea of Race eventually moving in with spot in Brooklyn and yes, it’s amazing but Race being Race sucks at remembering to do things and has a really bad sense of time. Imagine the impact it’ll have on Albert who sucks at dealing with change? (A lot of the newsies are neurodivergent btw including Albert)

The poor guy’s head is spinning, his best friend is gone and he can’t handle it. He’s having breakdowns constantly and the others are exhausted from dealing with them but Al can’t help it. No one sees him smile anymore and his senses seem to be heightened all the time, causing multiple meltdowns a day while Race is unaware.

He doesn’t want to feel like this anymore. He just wants Race back.

(Realistically none of this would actually happen and Race would visit like everyday AND YES RACE DOES VISIT AND FIGURE OUT THAT THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING BECAUSE WHEN HE GETS TO THE LODGING HOUSE HE CAN HEAR MUFFLED SCREAMING AND SOBBING SO THE OTHERS FILL HIM IN AND RACE COMFORTS AL AND VISITS WAY MORE BECAUSE HE CARES A LOT AND ALSO THE OTHER NEWSIES REALLY MISSED HIM TOO)

race thinks he has to earn somebody's love. being made sell papers by his dad from a young age, getting hugs and compliments when he sells them, but kicks and profanities when he doesn't, he's always thought that someone loving him has to come at a price.

albert thinks he's unlovable. his mother leaving at a young age and his sister passing away left him with his father and brother, who would either forget his existence completely, or instead remind him of how unwanted he is in their home. he's grown up thinking nobody truly cares to keep him around.
