im on my abuse cycle agenda again, so let me remind you that most of the abusers in it care about the recipients of that abuse.

mori has said in beast that he cares about dazai, but in the 15 light novel he says that a problem like dazai can be useful. he wants dazai to succeed but success to mori is very limited, meaning that the only way mori saw fit to raise dazai is to prepare him to be the mafia boss. he assumed they wanted the same things when all dazai wanted was to be happy and that the way to be happy was to survive the darkness long enough.

dazai has said that he believes that akutagawa could become one of the strongest members of the port mafia, that's including others like chuuya and kouyo by the way, if he could just play it smart. he chastises and belittles akutagawa to try to force him to use his head in the same way that he does, the same way that he had been ultimately forced to do. he pushes and pushes for akutagawa to get through the darkness when all akutgawa wants is to be useful to somebody.

akutagawa pushes kyouka to be useful. he wants her to work through the pain because he believed that eventually being useful would make her happy. and as we saw, akutagwa eventually realises that all kyouka wants to to be surrounded by people who love her, not to be a tool.

the headmaster wanted atsushi to be able to survive, koyo wanted kyouka to be able to thrive with her, most of them care about the people they abused. the only exceptions to the rule are abusers who see a goal greater than their victim or who are afraid of them.

So im back at watching BSD and im currently at season 5, so I want to talk about some things I see on tik tok recently.

Mori effect

We all know about Mori's "children". Dazai, Yosano, Elise, Q and how Mori traumatized them. First Dazai, he was traumatized before he even met Mori so Mori didn't traumatized him but he did gave him some bad memories(aka killing ex boss Infront of Dazai), Yosano wasn't really traumatized directly by Mori. Mori is a person who will try not to make much mess, he would rather make one person to lose mind than millions of people lifes. Let's remember that ADA and PM have same job, they protect Yokohama's people, ADA is light and Port Mafia is dark so Mori isn't really heartless, he killed ex boss so millions of people wouldn't die just like in war(The leader of an organisation is at the pinnacle of the organization and, at the same time, he is its slave. The leader must be more than willing to commit any atrocity in order to insure the survival of the organization.). At the time yosano was traumatized by Mori she was in war. That experience is already traumatising, her ability was really helpful but it wasn't just Mori who traumatized her but also a soldiers too. They started to hate her at some point because of her ability Mori is doing what anyone in military would do if they were in Mori's position while they are in the middle of the war. Elise, elise is his ability. Yeah yeah she was a young girl before Mori transformed into little girl, but now she is just an ability and Mori controls her how he wants she can't be really traumatized as ability, she doesn't seem like she remembers that she was a real person before. Q is indeed traumatized by Mori too but most by Dazai, Dazai was the one who locked Q.

ADA member transfer to PM

Where to start here? There are some of things that are hinting on Dazai being next boss. Mori predicted that Dazai will be boss at 23(now he is 22), Dazai took off his blue thing off (that was sign that he is with Ada), Mori not sitting in openings and Dazai is scene before that and after. All ADA members having white background in outro s5 but dazai has red. And much more that I saw. People also said that Dazai won't be a person will be back to PM because of Oda. Let's remember that Oda was famous mafia member that never killed someone. So Dazai can be like Oda and he is still keeping his promise to Oda but also he will save ADA people from being in PM.

Better villains

BRO YOU GUYS COULDN'T HANDLE THESE TWO AND YOU WANT "BETTER" VILLAINS. They are THE BEST villains you guys just see one wrong thing and you become blind af. You saw for Mori being ped0(still bad not defending) and never saw anything else but he just is soooo not important. If he wasn't important he wouldn't be still alive. Fukuchi was SOOOO GOOD never could guess he was fifth member. Poor Tachihara became blind T^T

What do you think of the Mori is Atsushi’s dad theory? At this point it’s unlikely to be canon but I’d still love to hear your thoughts on it

I don’t believe in it personally.

I have always believed that Atsushi knows who he is parents are. During the Guild arc when Fitzgerald brings up his parents, how they treated him worse than the Headmaster.

I always took Atsushi’s silent terror to be him reminiscing about what this abuse was. That he knows what his parents did to him.

And thus knows who they are.

If you go by that belief then this theory doesn’t hold up. Mori and Atsushi met in Anne’s Room during the beginning of the Guild arc. And Atsushi doesn’t recognise or know who Mori is.

Also, I don’t see Mori abandoning his own child. Mori isn’t someone who throws away his pieces. Dazai and Yosano left and Mori still considers them pieces on his board.

I don’t see him throwing away a potential piece in a bin to ignore for potentially more than a decade. At the very least, he’d keep tabs on him. And the second Atsushi’s ability was revealed Mori would’ve swooped in to bring him home.

In the early years, Mori wanted to build an army of soldiers that couldn’t be killed and would keep fighting and protecting this city.

Atsushi would’ve been the perfect subject for that because the tiger can negate wounds. There’s no way Mori would’ve passed up that opportunity.

The only way I can envision this situation is if Mori left Atsushi when he went to war. Atsushi would’ve been 4 when the war began and the earliest we see him at the orphanage with an age given, is 11 years old.

It still doesn’t make sense to me for Mori to do that.

But even if he did and didn’t keep an eye on Atsushi or know about his ability. Mori would still know his name and what he looks like. He would hear Akutugawa’s report that the weretiger was an ability user and recognise that this is his son.

He wouldn’t have send Akutagawa to capture him and ship him to the Guild. There’s no way Mori would give up his very powerful son up to another organisation. Mori would want Atsushi to be returned to him.

And if for whatever reason he went the Dazai route about it. Aka give Atsushi a choice to join him. He would try to earn his trust and wouldn’t do things like sending Q to attack him.

Also if Mori told anyone about it I’m pretty sure his executives would be in the know. Chuuya would’ve gone back to the government building to have Atsushi rescued once he noticed he was absent.

And even if Dazai wasn’t told I’m pretty sure he would’ve figured it out. He may not have told Atsushi to protect him, but he would’ve warned him to stay clear of Mori.

I feel any Mori as a father figure to Atsushi stuff would be as a parallel to Beast Mori. Seeing as he became a father figure to Atsushi. But as for being Atsushi’s real dad, I don’t buy it.

No hate to anyone who likes or agrees with this theory BTW. This is just my thoughts on it. I think it’s an interesting idea but not one I can see actually playing out in canon.

Ranpo's literally so sassy n sarcastic but sometimes it's hard to tell if he's being serious or not. Yk how sometimes people sound different when there being sarcastic. Yeah. He doesn't a lot of the time.

- When Chuuya first appears in Dazai's video, he is dubbed "Colleague A". - He becomes responsible for filming Dazai. - He makes fun of Dazai behind the cam a lot. - It takes a while for the subscribers to pick up, but some keen viewers notice the subtle change in shooting style. "Is No Longer Human revamping??" - The secret gets out when they hear a single, nasally laugh when Dazai accidentally chokes on a pastry he was mukbang-ing on. - (Dazai knows. He just left it in.) - That video becomes his highest-viewed and most-engaged-with for the month. Everyone's asking who his new friend is. - Chuuya values his privacy very much, though, so at Dazai's next Q&A video, he refers to the mystery man as "Colleague A". - Since then, Colleague A would sometimes be asked to say something once in a while. Turns out he's savage as hell, and the viewers enjoy seeing Dazai being roasted- literally, if the blush on his cheeks is of any indication. - Off-cam though? A miracle, Yosano had called it. - It was then that Chuuya realized he didn't want to lose Dazai again that he finally comes to return his Colleague's feelings. - That confession was off-cam, of course. :))

What do you think of Mori's role in BSD?

I have talked a little bit of Mori and his ability here.

As far as his role in the story goes I think he embodies two things.

1) The mafia.

2) The past.

1) As far as the first point is concerned I would like to highlight the symbolic role of the mafia in the story.

I have talked a little bit about it in the post I linked above:

At the same time, on a macro level, the story needs a resolution of some type between the Mafia and the Ada since it is obvious that the two organizations are linked because of the past of many characters in the ADA being linked to the mafia somehow. Dazai, Yosano and Fukuzawa all have a past which involves one or more members of the mafia, for example.

And here:

The  mafiosi are who the detectives could become if they were to completely  lose themselves in their most violent and darkest parts, while the HD  are who the detectives could become if they were to embrace simplicistic  ideals over people. This is also why this arc has been particularly  hard on Kunikida since among the members of the ADA he is the one who  risks to do so the most.

In other words the mafia is nothing more than the societal structure which organizes and takes charge of those people society doesn’t care about. The mafia symbolically represents the part of the city nobody wants to aknowledge and everybody fears. In other words, it is some kind of macro-representation of a collective jungian shadow.

The tripartic alliance perfectly illustrates this point:

The alliance is based on the collaboration among three organizations each one associated to a specific time of the day.

The Military Police and the Ability Secret Service are associated with daytime because they represent the accepted authority and law. They are who the citizens look up to and they must adhere to the rules and the laws.

The ADA is associated to the evening because they are an in-between the day and the night. They want to preserve the law and try not to act outside of it, but also see its limits and use loopholes and bend the rules to help people. They can look both at the government and at the criminal world critically, but they have also been shown to work well with both.

Finally, the mafia represents the night i.e. something which is totally not bent by the rules of the day. They are that part of society which was in chaos after the war and over which Mori seized control.

The members of the mafia are basically people society gave up on and who have no interest into being re-integrated in it:

Let’s highlight that Hirotsu has “society” among his dislikes and he is one of the oldest members. In short, he embodies why a person prefers spending their whole life in a criminal organization rather than in the respectable world. It is because of a dislike for it.

As far as Mori is concerned he says so:

He claims to love Yokohama even with its dark side and it seems that he has taken upon himself the difficult mission to organize this side of the city. However, the interesting thing is that, under his leadership, the mafia and the underworld have basically become nothing more than a mirror of society and the same abusive structures and dynamics if not worse have been established. However, this is also why Mori has been so successful.

Mori is loved and accepted by his subordinates specifically because he gave the mafia members the illusion that they can be a society on their own. He gives rules to the criminal world and organizes it, so that it can be more tolerable. After all, it is not by chance that the people most loyal to Mori are those who have experienced a much more chaotic world:

At the same time, these people are also somehow convinced of this:

They have accepted the world of the night as the only world where they can live and prefer this world to have some kind of law, so that they can feel more like people.

However, here lies the contradiction of the mafia and of Mori. All in all, this regulation of the world of the night is also what lets this world survive and favours specific dynamics from which both the governement and the mafia gain something, but which have negative impacts on the individual.

Kyouka’s case is a perfect example of that.

All in all, Kyouka is a victim of both the government and the mafia. On one hand the government chose to use her as a scapegoat to protect itself. On the other hand the mafia weaponized her ability.

She is also an example of how these two realities which should stay separate have actually built a twisted and beneficial relationship. The government can use the mafia as a scapegoat and a place where they can recycle individuals they don’t really want to take care of, while the mafia takes these individuals and turns them into pawns.

To summarize, the mafia represents that part of society which should remain hidden and is accepted as long as it does. Mori is the one who made this possible by transforming the underworld in a society he administers and in this way he makes it tolerated, but also makes sure that the true problem behind these people who have not a place to belong is never addressed nor solved. So, in a sense, Mori is weaponizing a social problem.

2) I have talked about BSD addressing a generational conflict in the meta on the Guild Arc whose link is above.

One of the reasons why the integration between the two organizations and in general among the different sides of Yokohama is so difficutl is not only because of the characters’ personal problems (unwillingness to cooperate, old grudges etc.), but also because the younger characters who have the best chance to change things find themselves in a flawed system they inherited by older characters.

All in all the series explores the theme of having to deal with the consequences of one’s parents’ actions (both negative and positive) and the characters all need to make themselves independent from parental and mentor figures, so that they can become their own people.

As that meta makes clear Mori is one of the representative of the old generation. He has contributed to the current peaceful situation Yokohama is in, but at the same time he has also been exploiting other people’s weaknesses.

Simbolically, it is interesting that his ability is the same, but also almost the opposite of Kyouka’s aka the character I used in the already mentioned meta to explore the theme of facing a parent’s legacy.

Both Mori and Kyouka’s abilities consist in guardian entities who protect their host, but who also exhibit specific personalities.

As it has already been stated Demon Snow represents Kyouka’s parents’ legacy which is ambiguous and with which Kyouka has to reconcile.

Elise is instead a child because symbolically she represents Mori’s tendency to manipulate and exploit the weak. She can also represent Mori’s own emotional side which is underdevolped like a child is.

Demon is initially presented as a dangerous and ruthless monster, but turns out to actually have good intentions and to be willing to help Kyouka, while Elise is introduced as a harmless little girl, but she is later revealed to be a violent ability.

This also fits with how Kyouka and Mori themselves are introduced in the series. Kyouka appears as a cold assassin, while Mori as a friendly doctor. However, these appearences are soon subverted.

However, the most interesting thing when it comes to this foiling is this:

Mori has perfect control over Elise to the point that even her current tantrums happen because Mori wants her personality to resemble Yosano’s, while Kyouka can’t influence the Demon’s behaviour and has just recently gained enough control to use her ability without her cellphone.

This perfectly shows where the two characters are in termsof control over their lives and the things around them. Mori is an adult and one of the most influencial people in the city, whereas Kyouka is a child who has been moving from a horrible place to another until she found someone willing to help her.

All in all, Mori is linked to these two concepts and I am expecting for him to be overcome in the end precisely because he embodies them too much. On one hand I think the conflict between the mafia and the ADA should be settled, but it seems difficult as long as Mori is around because his involvement in traumatic episodes concerning Dazai and Yosano’s pasts makes so that him being around makes so that the conflict is always there even if asleep. On the other hand the younger generation should surpass the previous one and do better and this symbolically overlaps with exponents of the old generation leaving the scene either because they die or because they lose power.

Specifically, I think Mori is bound to play a role in Dazai’s arc because of the two of them being obviously foils, as both Fifteen and the Dark Era show.

Mori is who Dazai could have become if Oda’s death had not made him realize something important:

“He’s a friend”

Dazai is as ruthless and as manipulative as Mori is, but he is not ready to give up a genuine and healthy connection he has made and in this way he both learns and shows that he is able to think outside of an utilitaristic mainframe, while Mori is not able to do so. He probably cares about Dazai to an extent, but he won’t develop this emotional attachment into something healthier.

That said, Dazai’s arc in the manga might very well involve him becoming someone completely different from Mori and so overcoming the influence the man has had on Dazai’s life once and for all and solving his personal conflict with the mafia in a positive way.

As a matter of fact, Dazai’s past with the mafia is brought up pretty often and he has left some important relationships unsolved. The one with Akutagawa is probably the most important, but there are also the ones with Chuuya, Koujo and Q who all knew him and have shown different levels of resentment over him leaving the organization.

At the same time, Dazai is trying to recreate a new version of the soukoku partnership he had with Chuuya and in this way he is stepping into Mori’s shoes as the one continuing the “tradition”.

However, I think that shin soukoku will actually answer Mori’s question:

“Only a diamond can polish a diamond. I wanna see for myself if that is true”.

The problem with Mori’s attempt is that it was purely utilitaristic, while I think that Dazai might be willing to make Akutagawa and Atsushi work together both because he needs them to fight against a strong opponent, but also because he might be trying in this way to fix the damage he has made to Akutagawa. It is still a pretty indirect and manipulative attempt, but at least Dazai is recognizing that there is another level to people other than their strengths and weaknesses. And it is probable that Natsume, by talking about diamonds, was referring to people’s interiority rather than to their abilities. In other words, Mori might have attempted to find an answer to Natsume’s words by onlu combining the ability of two people, while Dazai might find a better and more meaningful one by having his mentees develop psychologically thanks to each other.

These are my thoughts so far!

Interactions I really want to happen in Bungou Stray Dogs

Yosano and Elise: I want Yosano to meet Elise and realize she was based off of her and be devestated. She’d remember how Elise used to be, and be horrified that Mori was so desperate to keep her that he’d made Elise into her. Yosano could take it as a chance to apologize to her younger self.

Akutagawa and Kunikida: I know they fought that one time, but I want them to have a conversation. It could go one of two ways. Kunikida might be intimidated by Akutagawa and be very formal and polite. And I think if Akutagawa would act politely back. Cold, but still polite. Kunikida already earned a little bit of his respect in that fight. Or Kunikida would get preachy and criticize Akutagawa kind of like how Atsushi does, but without the relatability to back it up, and Akutagawa would think he was a pretentious asshole.

Kunikida and Chuuya: AKA the interaction the entire fandom wants to see. (I know they’ve technically interacted, but that barely counted.) I think Chuuya would be a bit underwhelmed by Kunikida. Then Chuuya would see Kunikida  and Dazai interact and be flabbergasted. He’s seen Dazai kill and torture people, how could that guy yell at him with such confidence? Kunikida probably thinks Chuuya’s a bad person and is probably kind of terrified of him. (I’m pretty sure Kunikida has a general distaste for the mafia as a whole) He’d probably be surprised that an idiot like Dazai could have any influence on someone as imposing as chuuya. (There first meeting was Chuuya flying in on a helicopter, throwing bullets, and yelling something along the lines of “what’s up Agency Motherfuckers”, so yeah he probably has a weird opinion on him)

Kunikida and Mori: This one’s kind of random, but I find it interesting. Kunikida probably hates and fears him, and Mori would probably just be amused. Also Kunikida would probably be mildly horrified once he noticed the similarity between Mori and Dazai.

Akutagawa and Gin: Yeah, we know they’re siblings and we’ve seen them walking next to each other, but we’ve never actually seen them have a conversation.

Tachihara and Gin: I want Gin to try to get revenge on him, and maybe he’d apologize (But he’d obviously think he’s in the right) and explain where he’s coming from. And then Gin or her brother would try to kill him.

Hirotsu and Dazai: I want more of Hirotsu acting like a parental figure towards Dazai.

Yosano, Mori, and Dazai: I want those three to be in the same place at the same time. I think Yosano would find it weird that Dazai and the man who had tormented her through a significant part of her childhood and ruined her life were talking with familiarity and like equals. Mori does seem to respect Dazai as a person a lot more than he respects Yosano. He respects her ability, but he’s terrible to her. there’s lots of interesting possibilities here.

Kunikida and Dazai: I want them to actually fucking talk about Dazai being in the mafia.

Atsushi and Akutagawa: I want Akutagawa to tell Atsushi about the things Dazai did to him. (This one might actually happen)

Q and Dazai: I want to see how they interacted when they were younger. I assume Dazai was left in charge of him at points, saying he’s the only one who’s safe from Q’s ability. I bet Dazai was horrible to Q.

Dazai and Elise: I’ve always wondered if they know each other. I assume they do, saying Dazai lived with Mori for at least a year and worked with him for about four. They probably didn’t get along and probably had a lot of childish arguments.

Kunikida and Ango: I think they might actually get along. They kind of remind me of each other. 

Kunikida, Yosano, and Ranpo: I don’t know. I just like their friendship and would like to see more of it.

Hirotsu and Gin: I wonder how long they’ve known each other. I like to imagine that Hirotsu helped train Gin and is somewhat of a parental figure to her.

Dazai and Gin: Gin probably hates him for what he did to her brother, but she also might be thankful that he gave them somewhere to stay. I wonder if Dazai treated her like he treated Ryuunosuke. 

Dazai and Kajii: I feel like these two would have really weird conversations.
