Jake Moffatt was booking a flight to Toronto and asked the bot about the airline's bereavement rates – reduced fares provided in the event someone needs to travel due to the death of an immediate family member. Moffatt said he was told that these fares could be claimed retroactively by completing a refund application within 90 days of the date the ticket was issued
Turns out, NOPE!
Dude booked an emergency flight at full rate, because Air Canada's chatbot told him he'd get a refund. Then when he tried to claim the refund, Air Canada told him the chatbot was a separate legal entity and that they were not responsible for anything it said.
You KNEW this day was coming: companies blaming their shitty generative AIs for screwing over customers.
Holy fuck.

Hmm, is that the sound of chickens, beginning to come home to roost?
After months of resisting, Air Canada was forced to give a partial refund to a grieving passenger who was misled by an airline chatbot inaccurately explaining the airline's bereavement travel policy. ... Air Canada was seemingly so invested in experimenting with AI that Crocker told the Globe and Mail that "Air Canada’s initial investment in customer service AI technology was much higher than the cost of continuing to pay workers to handle simple queries." It was worth it, Crocker said, because "the airline believes investing in automation and machine learning technology will lower its expenses" and '"fundamentally" create "a better customer experience."
I also highly recommend reading the decision itself:
Highlights:
"In effect, Air Canada suggests the chatbot is a separate legal entity that is responsible for its own actions. This is a remarkable submission."
"While Air Canada argues Mr. Moffatt could find the correct information on another part of its website, it does not explain why the webpage titled “Bereavement travel” was inherently more trustworthy than its chatbot. It also does not explain why customers should have to double-check information found in one part of its website on another part of its website."
And not "AI" related, but delicious snark:
"Air Canada is a sophisticated litigant that should know it is not enough in a legal process to assert that a contract says something without actually providing the contract."
#ai bs#lol#and good for the customer for refusing to take the company's shit#and taking them to court#I am a big fan of customers taking companies to small claims court

i'm hyperverbal, and my partner is easily overwhelmed by too much talking. i have a hard time even processing a thought until i've said it out loud, though. if i don't talk myself through it, i just get stuck and say nothing. not to mention, i have a hard time deciding what's actually worth saying out loud until i've said it. how can i talk to my partner while,,, talking less?
It's all about finding ways to exist together that support both of your needs. I am reading that your partner has noted they find a lot of chat overwhelming and you tend to chat a lot and struggle to know when or how to stop/start (somehow I identify with both of these...).
The first two questions are:
What is it that your partner finds overwhelming? Too many thoughts verbalised too quickly? The noise? Trying to follow the conversation? Do the reasons change from time to time?
Why are you chatting? Are you looking for connection? Reassurance? Is it accidental? Do these reasons sometimes change?
Understanding yourself and each other can be REALLY helpful in these situations in order to work out what will meet both your needs.
Finally for some hypertalkitivity tips, some things that have helped me in the past with situations like these are:
Before launching into something you're thinking about, check in with the other person on whether they are up for a chat, or whether they would prefer a little quiet time. If they need quiet time, respect that (it's not a rejection, I promise) and find another outlet for your energy/thoughts.*
Make sure you and your partner are on the same page about why you're talking and what level of engagement is needed from them. I had this issue with a friend while travelling (I chat while packing and they were getting overwhelmed). We talked about it and I explained that when this happens I don't need (or expect) them to actually listen, at most it would be nice if they occasionally said "hmm good question" or "mmmm" so I didnt feel lonely or get distracted. This isn't something they need so they had thought I wanted them to deeply listen and answer questions each time and were understandably EXHAUSTED. This convo, and following "heads up, I'm doing the thing - let me know if you need quiet time" chats avoided a lot of potential tension!
If you are having trouble with impulsively talking, find something that tends to help you have "quiet time". For me this is listening to something through headphones that I dont need to pay too much attention to or actually "watch" but still find really enjoyable (e.g. podcasts or super-long game-plays (thank you Jacksepticeye amiright?)) For some reason this signals "no talking" to my brain and I can quietly focus in other things - find yours!
Take a few deep breaths and talk a little slower. When ADHDers are hypertalkative and REALLY into a thought, it can be... intense. Passion is wonderful but taking a second to recognise that your partner is probs also having several thoughts/their own experience and it will take them a second to adjust is always appreciated.
*Other possible outlets for your energy/thoughts!
Write it in a notebook
Type it out or speak it to an AI chatbot!
Call a friend or family member
Do something physical to reduce the mental restlessness (this can be exercise, or even just doing some dishes or gardening etc - just something that makes your brain feel less like it needs to work out everything in the world RIGHT NOW)
Try a guided meditation to slow your thoughts
In the end only you and your partner will be able to work out what's best for you both, but I hope this has helped!
Remember that just because they don't want to chat right now does NOT mean they don't want to hear your thoughts at all. It's likely they just need to recharge their social batteries so that they can have cute chats and fun times later.
X

Hey everyone, dunno how long this might be, kind of doing a stream of consciousness style ramble about TNTF and me and stuff :)
alright so, tntf is getting a huge rework, this is my first if game ever, the coding is a little overwhelming, i know it’s fairly simple but it’s A LOT.
the reason i’ve been pretty quiet is mostly due to burnout, as some of you know i have health issues, i have crohns disease, i’m also autistic with adhd—something i love about this community is the understanding and acceptance for people/authors like me who may want to write but are just too stuck to be able to do it.
i know everyone is so jazzed for the next update, and i am too, there’s a few changes i’m making in regards to the technical aspects of the story, i’m removing stats, for the MC and for relationships. part of it is… i’m not a numbers person, trying to balance out the stats going up and down is a pain when this is planned to be a pretty damn long story. i also just don’t like it for my story personally, i don’t want you, as the player to feel like you have to game-ify personality or relationships.
this also opens the option for me to write more player responses to situations without having all of that annoying code in my brain~ MORE FLAVOR!
My writing has also vastly improved when it comes to fiction, a lot because i have been practicing so much while i’ve been sick (i’ve been playing with and writing AI chatbots on Janitor.AI, learning how to create a complex and realistic personality, an engaging character and world.) It’s been useful as a stress reliever and as a tool to help me write better, more descriptive etc.
on that note, smut in my game is also a very yes, i feel much more comfortable writing it now… heh.
i’ve also decided that all of my books are going to remain free, tntf was a planned three book series, it may just be one or two HUGE books, we’re going to have to see what i, and twine are capable of. but the story is going to span four countries and two continents of the world, so yeah.
the new rewrite is also going to slow things down considerably, because now we’ll have MC on a ship for four months as the intro, then meeting maddock and spending <insert amount of time here> with him while traveling to that little inn. it also gives me more room to introduce the characters a lot earlier but in their own POVs and not just while they’re with MC. i want the world to feel alive.
my decision to make and keep tntf free is because i want to.
i would not appreciate minors interacting with my content, but i also grew up with the internet, i know that no matter how much prevention we put in, minors are going to access our content regardless if it’s free or not. i just ask that if you are a minor and reading adult fiction, please don’t comment, dm or whatever, this is for your safety in the community as well as, i don’t want to deal with other people’s children on the internet, it’s nothing against any of ya’ll, you’re awesome, children are great but i’m almost 26, i really don’t want to deal with kids in what’s pretty much an adult space (i haven’t really seen books catered to the younger than 18 crowd, but like i’m saying, i’m more interested in forging connections with the adult community here, considering i am one, lmao *bats children away with pool noodles*)
i think that’s it
i might post more stuff but that’s my general direction
also to the asks in my inbox from last year on my birthday and forward… I READ THEM ALL AND APPRECIATE EVERY WELL WISH AND FEEDBACK, GENUINELY. i’m just bad at social media.

From Booking to Boarding: How Chatbots are Simplifying the Travel Process
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/99717f1d88d2a52200a90b991756b68e/b48d22d417b62969-e2/s540x810/c26e10a6a215a4d07ba18abde1ffd2f149ef6036.jpg)
Staying ahead with technology is key to offering customers a smooth and enjoyable experience in the travel industry. Chatbots, with their ability to understand and respond to human language, are revolutionizing how travelers plan, book, and experience their journeys. From the initial booking phase to the moment you board your flight, travel chatbots are making every step simpler and more accessible. This blog explores how chatbots for the travel industry transform the traveler's journey, making it more efficient and less stressful.
The Rise of Chatbots in Travel
Travel chatbots are automated software programs designed to simulate conversations with human users, especially over the Internet. They've become increasingly popular in the travel industry, thanks to their ability to offer instant communication 24/7. Unlike human customer service representatives, chatbots can handle multiple queries at once, reducing wait times and improving customer satisfaction.
Booking Made Easy
The first step in any travel plan is booking your tickets, and this is where chatbots shine. Through simple text commands or voice commands, travelers can interact with chatbots to find flights, compare prices, and book tickets. These chatbots are integrated with databases containing vast flight information, enabling them to provide quick and accurate responses. This saves time and allows for a more flexible booking experience, as you can make inquiries and bookings at any hour from the comfort of your home.
Personalized Travel Planning
Chatbots for the travel industry go beyond mere booking; they assist in planning your entire trip based on your preferences and needs. By analyzing your responses, chatbots can suggest destinations, accommodations, and even local attractions that match your interests. This level of personalization ensures that your trip is not just a journey but an experience tailored just for you.
On-the-Go Assistance
Once you're on your trip, chatbots play a crucial role. They can provide real-time travel updates, like flight delays, weather forecasts, and traffic conditions, ensuring you're always in the loop. Need to find the best local cuisine or navigate the city's public transportation? Chatbots are there to offer instant recommendations and directions, making your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.
Streamlining Check-ins and Boarding
The check-in and boarding process can often be tedious and time-consuming. However, with chatbots, these steps can be expedited. Many airlines now offer chatbot services that allow passengers to check in through a simple conversation on their smartphone. These chatbots can also provide boarding passes and gate information and notify you of any changes to your flight status. This reduces the time spent in lines at the airport, allowing you to relax or explore the airport amenities instead.
Customer Support and Feedback
Despite the best-laid plans, travel can sometimes be unpredictable. When issues arise, travel chatbots are available 24/7 to provide support. Whether it’s a last-minute change in plans, a problem with your booking, or a question about your destination, chatbots can offer quick solutions or escalate your query to a human agent if necessary. Moreover, they can collect feedback instantly, helping travel companies continuously improve their services.
The Future of Travel with Chatbots
As artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies advance, travel chatbots' capabilities are expected to grow even further. Future chatbots might predict your travel preferences before you articulate them, offer more personalized and insightful recommendations, and become more adept at handling complex queries. The seamless integration of chatbots into travel apps and websites will continue to enhance the customer journey, making travel more enjoyable and stress-free.
Conclusion
Chatbots for the travel industry are not just a trend but a significant shift towards more interactive, personalized, and efficient travel experiences. From booking flights to providing on-the-spot assistance, these AI-powered assistants simplify the travel process, making it more accessible to everyone.Â
As we look to the future, the role of chatbots in travel is only set to expand, promising even smoother journeys from booking to boarding. For travelers and the industry alike, chatbots represent a leap forward in making travel not just a destination but a journey to remember.

Last we left off, our trio of weirdos managed to get past customs without much issue, much to Frieren's chagrin. What will happen next? Let's find out!
Remember, this is a first read-through, so no spoilers please.
Huh. So Flamme isn't just a legendary mage, she's THE legendary mage. Frieren may have watched humanity develop magic from the very beginning. Not escaping the Paleozoic accusations, is she.
Stark did not sign up to be a surrogate father.
I suppose it's hard to figure out what level of respect people want when you've been traveling with someone as laze fare as Frieren.
I wonder what happened? They wouldn't exist in the first place unless they had a stable population at some point. What drove their numbers down to such dire levels? Is there still a small elven civilization, or is it all nomadic wanderers like Frieren?
What did she see in this idiot?
Ah. That's what she saw in that idiot.
Follow-up questions, my dude.
A precious image.
She absolutely didn't have her staff two panels ago. Guess she has hammerspace magic. I'm guessing that suitcase is bigger on the inside too.
I dunno, you seemed to respect Qual to some degree, and the dude clearly developed new forms of magic. Demons seem pretty sapient to me. Evil, but sapient.
Frieren exudes a frighteningly powerful aura of IDGAF.
Oh, hey. It's her. The last spoiler I know of. I mean, not that it was much of a spoiler. "There is a demon lady somewhere in the story" is pretty vague. I only know of her because I saw someone shipping her with Frieren. I'm going to hazard a guess that they never actually meet in the story and/or have zero romantic chemistry.
Hmm... This is all pretty tragic. I wonder what the truth will end up being. Can demons peacefully coexist? Or are they truly bound to their monstrous nature?
Whelp. That moral nuance didn't last long.
Whelp. Those negotiations didn't last long.
Good lord, these guys are practically AI chatbots. All context clues with no deeper understanding.
Dude, she's an elf who's unflinching at the threat of death, and you're just a doofus in suspenders.
This is badass and everything, but the mood is sort of ruined because it reminds me of the last scene I read involving wires.
God I love these goof-balls.
"It's symbolism" No, you're just a slob Stark.
It was at that moment they knew. They f***ed up.
Frieren is never one to ignore the path of least resistance.
Oh dear. I don't think I've seen Frieren grin like that before. Guess we now know what really gets her going.
Gah, a cliffhanger! Alas, I'm out of time for tonight, so it will have to wait for next time. I'm curious if we'll actually defeat Aura, or if she'll be a recurring antagonist.

"More than 150 workers whose labor underpins the AI systems of Facebook, TikTok and ChatGPT gathered in Nairobi on Monday [May 1st, 2023] and pledged to establish the first African Content Moderators Union, in a move that could have significant consequences for the businesses of some of the world’s biggest tech companies.
The current and former workers, all employed by third party outsourcing companies, have provided content moderation services for AI tools used by Meta, Bytedance, and OpenAI—the respective owners of Facebook, TikTok and the breakout AI chatbot ChatGPT. Despite the mental toll of the work, which has left many content moderators suffering from PTSD, their jobs are some of the lowest-paid in the global tech industry, with some workers earning as little as $1.50 per hour.
As news of the successful vote to register the union was read out, the packed room of workers at the Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi burst into cheers and applause, a video from the event seen by TIME shows. Confetti fell onto the stage, and jubilant music began to play as the crowd continued to cheer.
The establishment of the Content Moderators Union is the culmination of a process that began in 2019, when Daniel Motaung, a Facebook content moderator, was fired from his role at the outsourcing company Sama after he attempted to convene a workers’ union called the Alliance. Motaung, whose story was first revealed by TIME, is now suing both Facebook and Sama in a Nairobi court. Motaung traveled from his home in South Africa to attend the Labor Day meeting of more than 150 content moderators in Nairobi, and addressed the group.
“I never thought, when I started the Alliance in 2019, we would be here today—with moderators from every major social media giant forming the first African moderators union,” Motaung said in a statement. “There have never been more of us. Our cause is right, our way is just, and we shall prevail. I couldn’t be more proud of today’s decision to register the Content Moderators Union.”
TIME’s reporting on Motaung “kicked off a wave of legal action and organizing that has culminated in two judgments against Meta and planted the seeds for today’s mass worker summit,” said Foxglove, a non-profit legal NGO that is supporting the cases, in a press release.
Those two judgments against Meta include one from April in which a Kenyan judge ruled Meta could be sued in a Kenyan court—following an argument from the company that, since it did not formally trade in Kenya, it should not be subject to claims under the country’s legal system. Meta is also being sued, separately, in a $2 billion case alleging it has failed to act swiftly enough to remove posts that, the case says, incited deadly violence in Ethiopia...
Workers who helped OpenAI detoxify the breakout AI chatbot ChatGPT were present at the event in Nairobi, and said they would also join the union. TIME was the first to reveal the conditions faced by these workers, many of whom were paid less than $2 per hour to view traumatizing content including descriptions and depictions of child sexual abuse. ...Said Richard Mathenge, a former ChatGPT content moderator... “Our work is just as important and it is also dangerous. We took an historic step today. The way is long but we are determined to fight on so that people are not abused the way we were.”
-via TIME, 5/1/23
[Note: In addition to Big Tech outsourcing and exploiting workers for social media and AI moderation, many companies also exploit and vastly underpay mostly overseas workers to straight up pretend to be AI. I'm really glad issues around this are starting to get attention AND UNIONS because exploited overseas labor is so often the backbone of AI--or even the "AI" itself.]

Week 10 Blog Post
Will automated infrastructure take away freedom under the need for safety?
The rise of AI and robotics has prompted the creation of self-driving cars and a greater push towards automated functions in factories and in society that require less human input. These advancements have also been used in attempts to increase public safety such as through facial recognition software and automatic braking technology. While this can be beneficial in preventing deaths and accidents, it has the potential to strip the public of their freedom to privacy and the freedoms to travel without AI due to automated cars potentially being safer and due to gps and camera surveillance.
2. If humans use robots as a proxy, will gender and race still play a role?
Race and gender will still likely play a role in robot technology if humans were to use upcoming robotics technology as a proxy for them to use, with humans relaxing at home while piloting robots remotely similar to a video game avatar. This is due to the desire of people to customize their avatars to represent their beliefs, such as through the creation of chatbots designed to connect with users through mimicking a sexual relationship. Due to this, it is likely that race and gender will still apply to robot proxies through customization and names.
3. Are there any benefits to trolling?
Trolling can be beneficial in situations where it can be used to bring joy to people or as a form of protest. Page 4 of Kelly Bergstrom’s article, “Don’t Feed the Trolls” describes the relationship between the reddit user, Grandpa Wiggly, and the community that built up around him. While Grandpa Wiggly’s identity, and some of his stories may have been fake, he was able to supply great joy to many readers as they could look forward to listening to his tall tales. Trolling can also be used as a form to disagree with individuals, such as by poking fun at those who create problematic policies for innocent people.
4. When should trolling become illegal?
Trolling should become illegal when it begins to bring undue harm or effects to undeserving people on the internet. In Anna Silman’s article, “A Timeline of Leslie Jones’s Horrific Online Abuse”, she describes the abuse Leslie Jones faced from online perpetrators such as the leakage of nude photos, passport, and driver’s license information. When this type of online abuse occurs, abuse that could harm innocent people, should be investigated to try and find the person who perpetrated such a crime.
