Cast Away in the Coromandel

For Auckland Anniversary weekend we set off for another camping trip. This time we were headed for the top of the Coromandel. Waikawau Bay is quite remote so we decided to stop for groceries in Thames. There was a ton of traffic but we didn’t mind because the Thames Wings and Wheels show was happening. We rubbernecked at the propeller planes doing tricks all the way to the store.

The ride up the Coromandel Coast was beautiful and will be enshrined in our memories because somewhere along the route, Greg’s keys fell off the roof of his car. For lunch, we stopped at the Coromandel Oyster Company where we discovered that the keys were missing when Greg went to lock the car. That’s when we pieced together what happened. Greg had put the keys on top of his car when Baz and I were packing up the groceries and he went back in to grab ice. Greg’s Subaru is push to start, and was able to begin because the roof was within range. We drove over an hour without any of us thinking about it.

After the realization, we kicked into problem-solving mode. Greg called Rochelle who happened to be at the PAK’nSAVE in Thames and retraced our steps with her. I researched locksmiths and car repair places until I found a mobile locksmith that could reprogram a key for the car. This guy is based in Auckland, but said that he is the only person in the North Island that could provide this service. Our research backed this up, so after talking to the insurance company, we decided to go with him.

He told us that he could leave Auckland around 5:30 and be to us by 8 PM. Our friends came by to commiserate with us before going the rest of the way to the campsite. We packed our valuables into a backpack and went for a walk through the shallow water beach behind the restaurant. To pass the time, we played some phone chess, I caught up on my blogs, and we meditated a bit. At 8, we called the locksmith to find out that he hadn’t left Auckland yet because he couldn’t get ahold of the specific key for the car. He said he would keep searching and update us. 

As the sun began to set, we realized that we would need to sleep there. The car was parked in front of a long driveway with a large, private, plot of grass beside it. We followed the driveway up to a house, passing some curious sheep along the way. We knocked on the door to tell the residents our sad story and asked if we could camp in their yard for the night. They obliged and we set up camp. It actually ended up being one of the nicest spots we’ve camped at in a while. We admired the full moon as we ate dinner.

In the morning, the locksmith told us that he had acquired keys from a car dealership and was coming to us shortly. He finally showed up at about 4:30 PM. By then, we had spent 26 hours living in front of the Coromandel Oyster Company. Finally, we hit the road and drove the remaining hour up the coast to reunite with the rest of our friends. We walked along Little Bay Beach and then went for a quick swim in the seaweed-filled waters of Waikawau Bay.

At camp, we cooked some hot meals for dinner and finally got to relax. We caught up, danced, and sang through the night. In the morning, Rochelle’s dad drove his boat to Little Bay and sent his dinghy out to pick us up. We decided to go to Great Mercury Island/Ahuahu which entailed an hour of seasickness-inducing sailing through rough waters.

It was well worth the trip, as we anchored in the clearest blue/green water I’ve seen. We cooked up a quick sausage sizzle on the boat before some of us headed for the white sand beach. The rest of the group took the boat out for a fishing excursion. 

Rochelle, Baz, Erica, and I walked along the beach, taking time to appreciate the beautiful natural landscape. I found a set of small Pāua shells during my explorations. Before the group came to pick us up, we went for a dip in the translucent water. I could not get over the beauty of this beach and found it quite hard to leave.

The trip back to Waikawau was much smoother. We were actually able to enjoy the experience this time around from the top of the boat. Now, I could understand why people enjoy the boating lifestyle. When we landed, we quickly packed up the campsite and made the long drive back to Auckland.

Perfection of self involves loving the person you are, and if you're so arrogant as to believe you're ok with not eating and ok with letting some figment of your imagination control you, and think they are good for you, and has your best interests at heart over your OWN FAMILY? You're incredibly selfish and ignorant to what you are doing to yourself.

Your family probably in a panic trying to find you right now and you probably don't give a shit about that, do you? All you care about is listening to some stupid blue rat despite the fact that Elliot? You know, the supposed love of your life? IS LYING IN BED RIGHT NOW DEPRESSED AS HELL BECAUSE OF YOU.

You stole from the mon you love. You hurt your entire family for months and you have the FUCKING SPINE to say Ahuahu is helping you? You're smarter than that, yet you have acted very, very stupid tonight. So do yourself a favour and use your ears this time: GO. TO. YOUR. FAMILY. Apologise to Elliot for ignoring him and treating him like shit if you even care about him AT ALL (which you obviously don't, btw. What you're doing? Isn't love. It's abuse.) and then talk to a fucking doctor about your problems with food. Because you need to. Badly.

OK sorry this took so long to answer but let’s talk about… ducks and geese. im just gonna ramble about ducks and geese.

OK so first point of discussion, people hate geese but ducks are alright with people, despite the fact that the two groups of genuses are not all that different, in fact they’re in the same family. while geese may LOOK slightly more evil than ducks, they really aren’t! i think the only real difference is geese are larger and thus have more ability to attack you than a little old duck does. BUT THATS ONLY THE COMMON ONES WHERE I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ducks can get pretty big as well - and sometimes it’s difficult to tell them apart just by the way they look but i generally can anyway.

Second point of discussion: will’s favorite species of Anatidae (ducks, geese, swans)

OK. my favorite species of ducks are probably the call duck, west indian whistling duck, and indian runner duck. Call ducks are tiny, round, loud babies with a wide range of colorations :  

They’re very sturdy for their size, and very good-natured too! They were originally bred for trapping larger birds, so they would lure other ducks over with their loud calls, into traps and then are able to escape the trap made for the much larger bird, if i remember correctly. however, trapping has become kind of passénow so they arent used for that so much anymore. Young call ducks love water, so you have to keep them very carefully because they may make puddles with their water dispensers (or whatever you call them) to splash around in lol, i heard that on a bird husbandry forum somwhere i think.

next up is west indian whistling duck! 

this poised, long legged boy is native to caribbean swamps and mangroves, very shy and more active at night as far as i know. they’re vulnerable due to hunting for eggs and meat and habitat loss. look at that wonderful brown-speckled plumage… their namesake is their loud, screechy whistling call, generally heard when they are in flight, or agitated. 

ONTO INDIAN RUNNER DUCK: 

i mean. just. fuck, you know? that’s intense. that’s really intense. i don’t know that much about them really LOL i have not done that much research on them i just think they’re really truly glorious and amazing. JUST REALLY FUCKING GOOD. LOOK AT HOW FUCKING. I NEED HELP. they don’t waddle. they run. they stand erect and they fucknig run. they dont fucking waddle. DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING DO YOU SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS. IM ONLY FUCKING READING THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE ON THEM NOW. i havent done so much research into geese as i have into ducks but i have one favorite that isnt a duck that i can mention but not talk about cuz i have yet to research them and that’s the black swan! native to australia if i remember accurately!

One of the early places I was lucky enough to excavate at, as an archaeological student.
