Band of 107th U.S. Colored Infantry at Fort Corcoran, Arlington, Va. holding saxhorn brass valve instruments. These saxhorns were the type of instruments played at the funeral of African Civil War hero and Captain Andre Cailloux. Many of the instruments were played over the shoulder to play to the army following the band. Instruments today face forward and bands can be in the middle or back of a procession.

"If Voting Worked, It Would Be Illegal": A Critical Examination of Electoral Politics in the United States
---
Abstract
This paper explores the provocative theory that voting is not a pathway to meaningful change but a mechanism designed to pacify revolutionary fervor. The phrase “If voting worked, it would be illegal” suggests that the electoral process serves as a performative action that perpetuates existing power structures rather than challenging them. By examining the historical context of voting in the United States and its strategic use to control social movements, this paper argues that voting channels dissent into a system built to absorb and neutralize it. Through a positive bias towards this theory, the paper critiques the role of electoral politics in maintaining systemic power and highlights parallels to revolutionary thought, ultimately questioning the efficacy of voting as a tool for systemic change.
---
I. Introduction
The idea that voting is a mechanism of social control is not new. Encapsulated by the phrase, “If voting worked, it would be illegal,” this theory posits that voting serves to pacify revolutionary energy by providing an illusion of choice and agency. It argues that electoral politics are performative, offering a semblance of participation while perpetuating the status quo. This paper explores this theory through a historical analysis of voting in the United States, its role in maintaining power structures, and its strategic use to co-opt revolutionary movements. By adopting a positive bias towards this perspective, the paper challenges conventional narratives about democracy and political change.
---
II. Historical Context of Voting in the United States
The history of voting rights in the United States reveals a pattern of strategic concessions designed to preserve systemic power. Initially, voting was restricted to white, land-owning men, reflecting the Founding Fathers’ intent to protect elite interests. As suffrage expanded, it was often in response to social unrest or revolutionary pressures.
The abolition of property requirements, the 15th Amendment granting voting rights to African American men, the 19th Amendment extending suffrage to women, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are all framed as progressive victories. However, these changes were strategic concessions aimed at preventing more radical upheaval. By granting limited access to the political system, ruling elites were able to channel dissent into the performative act of voting, maintaining the illusion of democracy without threatening systemic power.
Moreover, the expansion of suffrage has often been accompanied by new mechanisms of control, such as poll taxes, literacy tests, voter ID laws, and gerrymandering. These measures ensure that political participation is limited and that electoral outcomes do not disrupt entrenched power structures. This historical pattern illustrates how voting rights have been used not to empower citizens but to pacify revolutionary fervor by incorporating dissent into a controlled system.
---
III. Voting as a Mechanism of Social Control
Voting serves as a powerful tool for social control by channeling revolutionary energy into non-threatening, performative actions. The act of voting provides a sense of agency and participation, creating the illusion of influence while maintaining the status quo. This phenomenon is evident in the two-party system of the United States, which presents voters with limited choices that ultimately support the same underlying power structures.
This illusion of choice neutralizes revolutionary impulses by fostering the belief that change is possible through electoral means. In reality, the political system is designed to absorb dissent and prevent challenges to systemic power. The electoral process becomes a pressure valve, releasing social tensions without addressing the root causes of inequality and injustice.
Historical examples illustrate this pattern. During the Civil Rights Movement, the extension of voting rights was used to quell revolutionary fervor and integrate African Americans into a political system that continued to oppress them economically and socially. Similarly, women’s suffrage co-opted feminist activism, channeling it into electoral politics rather than systemic change.
Voting thus serves as a mechanism of control, preventing revolutionary change by directing dissent into performative actions that ultimately reinforce existing power dynamics.
---
IV. Electoral Politics and the Perpetuation of Power
Electoral politics in the United States is designed to maintain systemic power structures. Political parties, campaign finance systems, and lobbying networks ensure that power remains concentrated among elites. Both major political parties are funded by corporate interests, limiting policy outcomes to those that serve capitalist and imperialist agendas.
The influence of money in politics illustrates the limits of electoral democracy. Campaign financing laws allow wealthy individuals and corporations to effectively purchase political power. As a result, elected officials prioritize the interests of their donors over those of their constituents, perpetuating inequality and maintaining the capitalist status quo.
Moreover, gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics manipulate electoral outcomes to preserve political power. These practices disproportionately affect marginalized communities, ensuring that electoral victories do not translate into systemic change. The strategic design of electoral districts creates safe seats for incumbents, reducing competition and solidifying the power of political elites.
This systemic manipulation of the electoral process illustrates how voting is used to perpetuate power rather than challenge it. By maintaining the illusion of democracy, electoral politics pacifies dissent and prevents revolutionary change.
---
V. Parallels to Revolutionary Theory
The theory that voting is a tool of social control aligns with Marxist and anarchist critiques of representative democracy. Marx argued that the state serves as an instrument of class domination, and electoral politics merely legitimizes bourgeois rule. Anarchists similarly view voting as a means of co-opting dissent, integrating revolutionaries into a system they should be dismantling.
Historical revolutions demonstrate how electoral reform is used to neutralize revolutionary fervor. For example, the extension of voting rights in post-revolutionary France and the United Kingdom served to pacify working-class movements without challenging capitalist structures. Similarly, in the United States, electoral concessions during the Civil Rights Movement prevented more radical challenges to racial capitalism.
These parallels illustrate how voting perpetuates systemic power by redirecting revolutionary energy into performative actions. Revolutionary theory thus supports the argument that meaningful change cannot be achieved through electoral politics alone.
---
VI. Counterarguments and Rebuttals
Proponents of electoral democracy argue that voting has led to significant progressive change, citing examples like the New Deal, Civil Rights legislation, and more recent social reforms. However, these gains can be seen as strategic concessions aimed at preserving systemic power. By making limited reforms, the ruling class prevents more radical challenges to capitalism and imperialism.
Furthermore, reformist gains are often rolled back, illustrating the resilience of systemic power structures. For example, the erosion of voting rights protections following the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder demonstrates how concessions can be reversed once revolutionary fervor is pacified. This cyclical pattern reinforces the argument that electoral victories do not result in meaningful systemic change.
---
VII. Contemporary Implications and Conclusion
This analysis challenges the notion that voting is an effective tool for systemic change. In the contemporary United States, electoral politics continues to channel dissent into performative actions, preventing revolutionary challenges to capitalism, imperialism, and racial oppression.
The theory that “If voting worked, it would be illegal” highlights the need for alternative strategies for social change. Direct action, grassroots organizing, and revolutionary movements offer avenues for challenging systemic power outside of electoral politics. By understanding voting as a mechanism of social control, activists can focus on building power from below rather than legitimizing a system designed to maintain inequality and injustice.
This paper concludes that while voting may offer incremental reforms, it ultimately serves to perpetuate existing power structures. Revolutionary change requires transcending electoral politics and challenging the systemic foundations of oppression.

SERIOUS Custom:
1951 Studebaker Woodie - Never Slow Down - StreetRodder
Body
Gray Baskerville accurately described Dennis Varni as "a hot rodder's hot rodder." Since buying a '31 Model A as a teenager in the late '50s, Dennis doesn't seem to have slowed down ever. He has amassed a phenomenal stable of collector cars, trucks, vintage race cars, and motorcycles of practically every type, including the '29 Model A roadster built by Boyd Coddington that was named America's Most Beautiful Roadster in 1992. He has participated in motorsports all over the world, including numerous trips to Mexico to race in the famous La Carrera Panamericana, to South Africa for the South African Rally Championship, and to the Bonneville Salt Flats, right here in the U.S., where he drove his Falconer L6-powered "Speed Nymph" streamliner just shy of 350 mph.
Dennis has more checks on his hot rodding bucket list than just about anybody we know. So did you really expect his latest street rod to be something ordinary?
Body Bottom
Any 1951 Studebaker woodie custom could be considered out of the ordinary (how many can you think of?), but Dennis, builder Curt Hill, and the people who had previously helped create this custom woodie, have taken the '51 to an extraordinary level.
This car was under construction when Dennis made the winning bid for it at the auction of the late Joe MacPherson's prized collection. The unfinished project had been started by Doug Carr of Woodn' Carr. It had already been transformed from a sedan to a fastback (based on Thom Taylor's design sketches) and was already a woodie. The top was chopped 2-1/2 inches, and the rear fenders were stretched 18 inches and treated to custom taillight lenses and bezels. The '37 Ford headlights were installed by Steve Davis, who had done some of the early fabrication on the car.
Such an unusual car deserved an equally unique engine. For a while, Dennis considered dropping in a Cadillac engine to create his own version of the Studillac, the Cadillac-powered Stude coupes custom-built in the mid '50s. Then he remembered the one-of-a-kind induction system he'd found at a swap meet decades ago. The mechanical fuel injection system, with wild-looking air bodies, was a prototype created by Propulsion Development Laboratories in the '50s. Everybody had seen it on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in 1959 and nobody had seen it since. The setup is finally in service, feeding a Ford 427 FE engine. Dan Brewer in Torrance, California, did the assembly on the engine and converted the PDL mechanical injection to work with a Hilborn electronic system hidden under the manifold. Edelbrock cylinder heads are topped with Edsel valve covers to replicate the look engine on Hot Rod's cover. The new combination produced 410 hp on the dyno. An adapter fits the Ford to a GM 700-R4 transmission. This is one of the rarest, most unusual engines you'll find in a hot rod, but Dennis is almost nonchalant about it. "Nobody puts Edsels in Studebakers," is what he said.
The interior was entrusted to Sid Chavers in Santa Clara, California. Chavers built custom bucket seats and covered them in tan leather with gray-toned fur inserts. No need to replace the '51 Studebaker dash, so Redline Gauge Works restored the appearance of the factory gauges and updated the internals. A reproduction '54 Stude steering wheel came from Shrock Brothers, which specializes in repro Studebaker parts. Lucky 7 Customs gave the wheel and column their wood grain paint. The perfect accessory to the interior is the set of vintage alligator-grain luggage in the rear deck area, which Dennis found in an antique store in Washington.
The end result is a genuinely unique custom that would probably hover around the top of most people's lists of great Studebakers, great woodies, and great customs.

The Bombshell Political Report So Shocking A U.S. President Tried To Pretend It Didn't Exist! LBJ Tried To Torpedo The Official Kerner Commission Record. Instead It Became A Bestseller
— May 10, 2024 | Jelani Cobb

President Lyndon Baines Johnson listens during a meeting in the White House Cabinet Room, March 26, 1968. LBJ Presidential Library.
When President Lyndon Baines Johnson created the [Kerner] commission in July 1967 it was tasked with understanding what had happened up to that moment. Nearly two dozen uprisings or, in the antiseptic language of the report, “civil disorders,” had occurred between 1964 and 1967, with the largest and most destructive taking place in the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles over the course of five days in August 1965.
Kerner has endured not simply for its prescience but also for the breadth of its analysis of the moment when it was conceived. The National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, which became more commonly known as the Kerner Commission—a reference to then-governor of Illinois Otto Kerner, who served as its chairman—was created by President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Executive Order 11365 on July 28, 1967. The order was issued as entire stretches of the city of Detroit lay smoldering.
On July 23, 1967, a police raid on an after-hours bar in Detroit sparked an explosion in which residents hurled rocks and bottles at police and culminated in a nearly week-long uprising marked by arson, looting, and forty-three deaths. Just eleven days earlier, the city of Newark had detonated following the assault on John Smith, a Black cab driver, by white police officers. The reactions in the community were immediate and incendiary. In the chaos of social retribution that ensued, twenty-six people were killed and hundreds more injured, while the city sustained an estimated ten million dollars in damage.
Newark and Detroit were just the most notable of more than two dozen American cities that ignited in revolts in that summer of 1967. It appeared as though a valve of the city reservoir had been opened. An apocalyptic fury, the response to decades of discriminatory policy and centuries of racial exploitation, suddenly spewed out in American cities.
Johnson charged the eleven-member Kerner panel with answering three questions: “What happened? Why did it happen? What can be done to prevent it from happening again and again?” These were Johnson’s precise words. Addressing these questions, however, would mean answering dozens of subsidiary questions the roots of which lay deeply tangled in American history and public policy.
The members themselves represented a cross section, albeit not a representative one, of domestic interests. Chaired by Kerner, the second-term Democratic governor of Illinois, the commission included two of his fellow Democratic elected officials, Congressman James Corman, the fourth-term representative of California’s twenty-second district, and freshman senator Fred R. Harris of Oklahoma. They were joined by three Republicans, New York City mayor John V. Lindsay, Rep. William M. McCulloch of Ohio’s fourth district, and Edward Brooke, the freshman Massachusetts lawmaker and the sole African American serving in the United States Senate at the time.
By current standards the commission was overwhelmingly white (nine of the eleven members) and male (ten of eleven). Katherine Peden, the commerce secretary of Kentucky, was the sole female commission member. Roy Wilkins, the political moderate and executive director of the NAACP, joined Brooke as the only Black people at the table. In addition, I. W. Abel, president of the United Steelworkers of America, represented labor in the proceedings, and Herbert Jenkins, the police chief of Atlanta, Georgia, represented law enforcement. Charles Thornton, the CEO of Litton Industries, spoke for the manufacturing sector.

President Lyndon Johnson (seated, center) shakes hands with members of the Kerner Commission. July 29, 1967. White House Photo Office Collection, LBJ Presidential Library.
What differentiated the Kerner Commission from the outset was the historical scope of the investigations: the members were not seeking to understand a singular incident of disorder, but the phenomenon of rioting itself. Despite the heterogeneity of interests, if not the bipartisan backgrounds, of the members, the concluding report spoke with a strikingly unified voice about the problems that the various committee participants sought to understand. And that voice was an unabashedly integrationist one. Their most immediate and salient observation was that, even though the police had been involved in these most volatile incidents, American cities were not simply facing a crisis of policing. Rather, police were simply the spear’s tip of much broader systemic and institutional failures.
[T]he Kerner Report noted that the “problem” had been, first and foremost, inaccurately diagnosed. The so-called Negro problem was, in fact, a white problem. Or, as the report noted in one of the oft-quoted sections of the summary, “What white Americans have never fully understood—but what the Negro can never forget—is that white society is deeply implicated in the ghetto. White institutions created it, white institutions maintain it, and white society condones it.”
In a best-case scenario, Kerner would have become a kind of guidebook for the War on Poverty policies then being enacted by the Johnson administration. In more practical terms, the commission recommended new community-based guidelines covering how police needed to interact with citizens of “the ghetto,” as Black communities were dubiously classified in the report. It devoted an entire chapter to the ways in which justice should be administered in the course of riots; it suggested a national network of neighborhood task forces, local institutions that could bypass the bureaucracy and red tape of city administration and head off problems before they erupted into crises. It suggested “neighborhood service centers” to connect residents of these communities with job placement and other forms of assistance and proposed expanded municipal employment as a means of diminishing chronically high unemployment in these areas.
Perceptively, its members suggested that the monochromatically white news media that reported on these uprisings was also a symptom of the bigger problem. That social upheaval that had been created by overwhelmingly white institutions and maintained by said white institutions was then investigated and reported upon by yet another overwhelmingly white institution constituted, in their assessment, a racial conflict of interest. They closed with a raft of specific recommendations for housing, employment, welfare, and education. Kerner was possibly a victim of its own meticulousness. The report brims with suggestions. One reason why its proposals were not realized might be that it simply made too many of them.
The commission could not have known when it released its findings in March 1968 that it was issuing a preface, not a postscript. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated the following month, and more than one hundred American cities exploded into just the type of violence that the Kerner Commission had sought to understand if not prevent. [T]he Report was fated, from the moment it reached shelves, to operate more crucially as a forecast than a review. “Our Nation,” it warned in 1968, “is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—separate and unequal.”

predictions for 2024:
someone's gonna piss on white house property but not in the toilet
joe biden and trump die of old age mere months before the election and both of the single party that americans have two of have to scramble for new candidates. the democrats will ignore bernie for a borderline republican who will change their allegiance the moment they get into office (assuming a democrat win)
Ronald Dion Desantis and Greg Abbott get the Shinzo Abe Experience (and the republican party starts caring about gun violence over this) (but only removing the guns from the hands of the minority groups that did the shootings)
Anthony Albanese will eat a food wildly incorrectly (such as a raw onion) and Baldi's Basics in Running a Political Party will do a silly dance in parliament because he is defending a corporation. the news companies will only cover one of these.
Captain Ancap will actually try selling Argentina's president seat to Elon Musk and there's a coin flip chance of him accepting it and somehow running it about the same
At least 2 African nations will legalize slavery
Joe Biden actually tries to raise the minimum wage as a last minute fuck you to his party. it hits 9 us dollars per hour. this is still not enough to pay rent in any city.
Nintendo announces a new switch, but there is a glaring issue with the name that makes it sound like an accessory for the original (like the WII U being mistaken for a gamepad add on for the wii)
Another Ubisoft sandbox that's as boring as the last. It magically makes it into the game awards
There is a new indie game that's cool until it hits the elsagate market and becomes skibidi dop dop dop yes yes skibidi dop dop nyeem nyeem levels of dogshit. the developers lean into it and change things already in the game to fit this, leaving the ideal way to play as a pirated copy of the first release version.
Mario Kart 9 is announced for the Switch 2. The retro courses have a lot of MKDS and MKWII's courses (nitro and retro) and yoshi circuit gets the shortcut back from double dash
Valve makes an agreement with Epic to let Fortnite on Steam. They also release a major TF2 update with new Valve-made content that isn't a scrapped map from 2010 that they reskinned. It's got Cactus Canyon on top of the new map, with an extra few cacti because it will have gone through more versions. Beta Maps get added to the Casual map queue under their own. Player Destruction gets added to the core casual queue and the invasion maps get put into the right categories. Medieval Mode gets new maps. VSH is put into a new "arcade" mode.
TF2 Casual's Core Modes and Alternative Modes are combined, but the ultrawacky modes are shoved into arcade. There's a case for valve items and war paints, and a case for community items, and a community war paint case. This results in a bug with Unusual skins with the seasonal hat effects and Unusual hats with the skin effects. Competitive resets every year now and gives a badge for your rank.
This update also includes a Fortnite-Themed set for scout/heavy that comes in genuine for linking a Fortnite account subscribed to the Crew service. The entire update is actually a promotion for Fortnite coming to steam and the TF2 collab.
Additional Fortnite collabs include Guilty Gear (Asphalt/Brisket/Sol/Ky) and Touhou. The Nintendo Collab has Link and Samus (with zero suit style) and this causes news headlines to come out because gregor samsus has the bulge (suddenly this is an issue because they need clicks)
The Zero Suit style and the Skyward Sword link styles are locked behind playing on a Switch/Switch 2, depending on when they come out and the switches dont actually render the bulge on samus (cringe)
An Australian Politician (Male) will have to stop campaigning against trans people for a second because one of the women he sucked off recorded it and posted it on tiktok. This in particular is why I tend to dislike "only the strong survive" type scenarios. If you've ever taken an advanced biology course, you'd understand that "survival of the fittest" does NOT mean "the weak perish and the strong survive". In severe bottlenecking scenarios (and by that I mean population-reducing, like famine, or a zombie apocalypse), the nature of the situation could not give less of a shit if you are "strong" or "fit". The truth of the matter is, if you survive, it's because you're LUCKY.
Let's say you stocked up for Zed day and it finally arrives. You already built a shelter and everything, you're all prepared. But get this: you're not at your shelter when the virus strikes. The first brain muncher comes at you. Then another. And another. You're surrounded by people on the street turned feral, and you have nothing to defend yourself with. Whole lotta good that preparation did you.
That's just one scenario. Who even says the Z-virus would be transmitted through open blood contact? For all we know, it could be an arial disease, or zoonotic. You could be walking around someday and all it would take is inhaling some particles or getting bit by a little fly. Even the military would find something like that hard to keep under control, and trust me when I say that the US military has WAY more resources than any US civilian. At that point, it's not a matter of if you're stacked up on loot anymore.
"Survival of the fittest" is often criticized by experts in biological fields because it's a misleading term. Like I said before, it doesn't exactly mean that only the strong will survive; it actually is meant to describe the natural selection of traits which are *favorable* in the current environment. This is a gradual process, and it changes with the environment. A common human example of this in biology courses is sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease that transforms the structure of red blood cells into a crescent-moon shape (like a sickle). In areas like the US, sickle cell is rare, because surprisingly having your blood shaped like dying Pacman isn't good for you. HOWEVER, in areas with ongoing malaria outbreaks, like central African countries, sickle cell is much more common. This is because being a carrier of the sickle cell disease (meaning you have one of the 2 genes needed to get it completely) actually makes you more resistant to malaria.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that natural selection is based around external factors, and can vary *wildly* depending on the situation you're put in.
Now, let's wrap back to the zombie apocalypse. Obviously, having guns or weapons and a fortified base is going to help you at least somewhat. But a large group of people, regardless of strengths or flaws or even resources, is ultimately going to be more beneficial. Yes, canned food is easily accessible and doesn't spoil, but what happens when that food runs out, and all of a sudden the lone wolf realizes that they don't know how to farm, forage, or fish? Now let's say you have a farmer in that large group of people. The canned food runs out much more quickly, but you have more people going scavenging and an expert who knows how to plant and grow crops, as well as how to teach others the same thing. That is a much more sustainable solution than going around and stealing supplies from innocent people. The same thing goes for fighting off zombies; in any situation, I'd rather have a bunch of people smacking zombies with me rather than a bunch of guns to shoot them with. When you're in a group of people, you can rely on them and they can rely on you.
As with most things, I feel a strong urge to connect this to video games. I think Valve's Left 4 Dead series pulls off the "survive together or die alone" type stuff fairly well. On the surface, L4D and L4D2 are pretty similar to other zombie stories: entire world infected with virus, infected people go crazy and mindlessly kill others, only a handful of survivors here and there just trying to survive. However, if you look a little further into the gameplay and the lore, it's quite a bit different. For one, the virus is transmitted just by being NEAR someone who is infected, and the only reason the survivors we play as aren't zombified is because they all happened to be genetically immune. These are just normal, everyday people; they have emotions, they scream in pain and fear when hurt, and if it wasn't for game mechanics then they wouldn't know what the hell they are doing (except for maybe Bill). You can see this in the L4D comics, where you get to see the first group's backstories and discover their lives before the pamdemic. The thing that's the most consistently enforced throughout gameplay AND lore is the idea of teamwork. Bill was insistent on sticking together and toughing it out like a family in the comics. In both games, losing a team member SEVERELY decreases your chances of survival, especially on harder difficulties. In order to perform the most efficiently, your entire team has to work and plan together, and each person fulfills their own role.
Granted, community relationships aren't always as beneficial. There's always a chance that some guy in your bigass group of people is secretly evil or whatever. But in a real-world scenario, you ain't gonna survive a mass pandemic on your own. The only plausible way to continue on as a species would be to band together, regardless of animosity or conflict, and conquer the zombie virus as a team. It's not a competition, it's a group effort.
hate how all these apocalyptic films show society breaking down the hot minute the grid goes down, with all the survivors banding off into tiny violent gangs that prey on each other.
bitch you are a member of one of the most social species in existence! it is actually insane the extent to which humans have evolved to use cooperation as our main survival tool. humans have been building and then rebuilding societies for as long as disasters have been bringing them down. an apocalypse would be fucking awful, but the survivors would end up building communities and networks and pooling resources and knowledge, because that’s what humans do. that’s what they DO!!!
#if i got any science wrong please let me know#i did take college level biology but by no means am i an expert#cw zombie#long post
