So to be honest I really didn't like Opposing Force. It was kind of a chore and it's really not that well designed from just like a gameplay perspective. And to be fair neither is blue shift but blue shift is poorly designed in a way that's just kind of boring and lets you breeze through the game without much of a challenge- Opposing Force has the complete opposite issue at least in my opinion. Opposing Force has such a strange difficulty curve and really struggles to communicate concepts to the player.

But I did like one thing about Opposing Force. I like the silent protagonist. He gets so much characterization most of which I think is probably unintentional and me just reading something interesting into an uninteresting character. But like hear me out.

The game opens up with Adrian Shephard on his way to Black Mesa while the other people in his unit talk amongst themselves about how much they want to kill something and how irritating it is that they don't have their orders yet. Their helicopter is taken out and Shephard is now the sole survivor out of his unit. Following this he is saved by a Black Mesa scientist- had Shephard received his orders and made it to Black Mesa he probably would have had to kill this dude. However he doesn't know he's supposed to be killing scientists and security guards and is later forced to accept help from Otis a Black Mesa security guard 🎉 so already he's kind of doing the opposite of what he's supposed to be doing. Later in the game you start picking up little alien guns and whatnot and use them to get through the game, one of these being the spore launcher. This thing really made me open to the idea of caring about Adrian- I'm really fatigued by the whole army man shit. I like war movies don't get me wrong but there's only so many times I can watch full metal jacket before I get tired of it. So anyways. There's an idle animation that sometimes happens while you're holding the spore launcher where Adrian will pet it. And it responds to him. They didn't need to do this. Like they really didn't need to do this, but it adds so much to Adrian as a character that he's just.. compelled to pet this weird little alien that he's been using as a gun since he found it.

I just think like conceptually he's really interesting. Like this game demands you to rely on everything that you were primed to kill going in. Like in Half Life and in Blue Shift you have to kill soldiers, in Opposing Force the main like thing that makes this game special is that you are a soldier and you have to rely on other soldiers to help you through the game. Well okay you're a soldier so that means you're going to be killing scientists and security guards right? Not necessarily. Your first encounter with a scientist is him saving your life and trying to save the life of your comrades, your first encounter with a security guard is him opening a door for you after you run away from a zombie completely unarmed

So those are my thoughts on Adrian Shephard 👍 I think he's strange and very interesting

Throwback: Sam Cooke-A Change Is Gonna Come

Sam Cooke wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come" after he and his entourage experienced a whites-only hotel in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1963. Cooke also heard Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind" on the radio questioning the existence of war and Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have A Dream speech and used all of these things as inspiration. He was moved by the tension in the country that was forming the Civil Rights Movement but he also said the song came to him in a dream the same year as the hotel debacle.  "A Change Is Gonna Come" was recorded in 1964 after singer/record producer J.W. Alexander warned him about not making any money from it because of the topic. Cooke responded by telling Alexander he just wanted the song to make his father proud. He debuted the song on The Johnny Carson Show in February of 1964 with a full string section. The performance was not recorded and it was the only time he performed "A Change Is Gonna Come" in his life. He did not have the desire to perform it again because the arrangement was complex and he agreed with Bobby Womack that it sounded "like death." On March 1, 1964, the tune was released on Cooke's Ain't That Good News album and as a single seven months later. 

"A Change Is Gonna Come" did become a song adopted by the Civil Rights Movement soon after it was released. The song's legacy started there but through the years many artists have covered it and added to its relevance including Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, The 5th Dimension, Terrence Trent D'Arby, Seal, Bobby Womack, The Supremes, Lizzo and Beyoncé. Hip-Hop producers have sampled it on songs by Nas, Lil Wayne, and Ghostface Killah. Spike Lee used the song famously in his Malcolm X film and Barack Obama referred to it when he won the 2008 presidential election. 

Cooke was fatally shot in December of 1964 two weeks before "A Change Is Gonna Come" was released as a single. In 2019,  Shreveport, Louisiana mayor Adrian Perkins apologized to Cooke's family for the 1963 incident and posthumously awarded the singer the key to the city. In 2020, Leslie Odom Jr. portrayed Sam Cooke in the Regina King-directed One Night In Miami and reenacted Cooke's performance of "A Change Is Gonna Come" on The Johnny Carson Show.

He said, shaking his hands out in front of him as if to wade off bad juju. "People... like Jimi and Lyrica, huh?" Otis asked, as he was never one to not be blunt. Plus, he'd had to shoo them off from behind the merch stand as things were about to get a bit X rated on some valuable shirts. "I still don't know how to survived an entire summer of that." Otis laughed, as he'd been fortunate enough to tour with his father, Adrian come summers in his youth so he didn't have to play boy scout. "Nah, you're more than valid in feeling however you feel." Otis let her know with a shrug. "It sucks to not be that person for someone you want... but it does get better eventually. Trust me, I know." Otis let her know, pointing at himself with a bigger smile. "And who knows? Maybe we'll find someone who likes us even more than those people we wanted someday. And if not, you're stuck with me." Otis suggested, with a light nudge to Mae's shoulder. "Totally just girl who's alive and breathing, if you ask me.'

"You? Tapped out of weird? I never thought I'd see the day," Mae joked, though Otis had a point. "I mean I generally don't worry about it but then I'm around people and it's kind of hard to ignore. Especially at such horny event like a music festival. It gave me flashbacks to camp with the greasers," she mumbled and shivered as she thought about it. The Elena and Matty era had definitely left its lasting impact. "I know you're gonna give me the pep talk angle but I guess sometimes I just feel a bit discarded. Not as much as I used to, I mean I feel like I've grown a lot but those little insecurities are a bitch. Guess I'm just trying to get to a place where it doesn't bother me but I don't think I will. Does that make me a failure or just a girl who's alive and breathing?"

Adrien got completely boned from the first minute all the way until the gene worm

Gordon and Barney had the security and science teams at their backs and a decent knowledge of the complex

Gina and Colette had each other and Keller as an omniscient guide through Black Mesa

Adrian had to crash land and nearly die and then fight for his life from the moment he hit Black Mesa til the moment the grey guy decides to pick him up like a kid waiting at soccer practice

absolutely 100% agree man

adrian definitely had it the absolute worst out of any half life protag from the first games, dare i say even gordon (although his was the longest and he did have to deal with the most)

bros was exploded out of his osprey and the only reason he survived that was because some scientist's desperate attempts at giving him cpr managed to actually work

in the first few minutes of the game he's already been through something that rivals gordon starting the rescas, and it only gets worse from there

he has to watch as his fellow soldiers are experimented on, turned into zombies from a few curious scientists just wanted to see what happened when they put headcrabs onto their heads

and this is all before he even gets a weapon

it takes a good five to ten minutes into the game to get the wrench and, despite being powerful, it's slow and clunky and not very good for actual protection

not to mention while the guards and scientists can't hurt you in half life and blue shift, friendly fire absolutely is on for them in opposing force

i can say in my playthrough when you get otis to that hallway with the supply closet and the headcrabs break through, he doesn't even have to hit you dead-on to deal 40 damage with his pistol; effectively two-shotting you if you're at less than 90 health

and it wasn't even a direct hit; imagine how much damage could be done if otis had gotten a headshot

not to mention the random friendly fire between your own hecu troops as you travel through black mesa

i had a medic suddenly fire at me for literally no reason, and i had to kill him, effectively losing an otherwise very valuable medic

might i add the new aliens you have to encounter?

race x is one of the gnarliest species of aliens i've ever seen in any alien game, and i don't mean that in a good way

even the pitdrones are disgusting and annoying to deal with

and don't even get me started on the voltigores

adrian has to deal with at least 5 if not up to 8 of those things in the sewers with limited ammo that actually kills them, including two or three of the babies

not to mention the pit worm fight that's before the gene worm

there's no way to actually evade the pit worm other than running like hell, unlike gordon's encounter with those green tentacles where he could be quiet and distract them with grenades

this isn't even halfway through the game

you also have to deal with special forces and black ops attacking you, different from where gordon and barney only had to deal with them seperately, you have to deal with both in opforce

plus the room where you have to deal with special forces, black ops, and shocktroopers?

like sure they can kill each other and you can stand out of the way but you still have to deal with whatever's left and they're definitely not generous with the amount of health, armor, and ammo you have left at this point

also having to de-arm the bomb in the parking garage, only to have the gman re-arm it and close the way back through so you can't turn the bomb off again?

knowing that your every move is a race against the clock for when this bomb is going to go off, right before immediately being thrust into having to fight at least twenty black ops and special forces along with one that's manning a machine gun?

and then you have to go through the maze that's after that along with jumping across floating crates whilst avoiding the voltigores and shocktroopers spawning below you, only to get to where you have to fight the gene worm

and just to backtrack a bit, the water levels? absolutely fucking horrible

it got to the point where i was so sick of the ichthyosaurs that i seriously just stabbed one to death in the water

and the gene worm is also horrible albeit monotonous

and you do all this just to be taken in that same osprey (or a copy of it) by the gman at the end of the game, and be told that even though he used you to get jobs done for him you actually weren't supposed to know about black mesa?

he just barely saved you from getting bombed with the rest of the facility by convincing his employers to put you in the void

and you compare that to gordon or barney's journeys through black mesa (i'm not mentioning decay because i don't know enough about the game to comment on it)?

gordon's was hard and long yes but at least he was supposed to be there and was instead put into a 20 year stasis that really just felt like a blink, and the nihilanth was hard but he finished his journey long before adrian did

barney genuinely had it the easiest out of any of the protags, the worst that happened to him was having to fight the hecu and having to put up with a bunch of snobby, annoying scientists

adrian shephard seriously had the worst time out of all the half life protags in any game or spinoff (not counting hl2) and no one can convince me otherwise

Both Adrian and Wydell are breathing heavily as he holds her against the wall- having practically lifted her up and slamming her into it. He let his emotions get the best of him again, but her only reaction was to smile as a moan escaped her.

She wraps her legs around his waist and pulls him closer, grinding against him as she does. For a moment he thinks he’s had it all wrong; she’s just as wild and crazed as the family that took her. However, her green eyes are drawing him in and he forgets about it for just a moment as he leans forward and his lips hover against her own.

“You like it rough, huh? That turned you on?”

Adrian nods slightly and bites her lower lip, fingers playing with the buttons of his open shirt. “I really do. Get mad at me more often, Sheriff.”

He chuckles and pulls back slightly and thrusts against her again, breathing against her neck as her head tilts back. “No darlin’, I couldn’t do that. I’m sure we can make an arrangement, though.”

Wydell grips her ass as he backs away from the wall and sets her on his desk, unperturbed when she pushes his work onto the floor. He leans over her, capturing her lips with his own in a slow and teasing kiss. His hands move up her waist- under her shirt and over her breasts, pausing a moment.

She tugs at his belt and shiny buckle, moaning into his mouth and desperate for a release. He smiles at that, removing his hands and straightening up so she can pull the belt free.

Adrian was easy- a loose shirt with no bra and a pair of shorts and thin underwear- she was undressed in no time. Wydell took more time- with removing his vest and any weapons he had on his person and with Adrian ripping open his shirt- but once his pants were down, he placed himself between her legs and gave her exactly what she was wanting.

She falls back onto the desk, closing her eyes as she wanted to focus on him slamming into her, his fingers gripping her sides roughly. He leans over her and presses his lips against her throat and she turns her head at the feel of his teeth on her skin.

Adrian’s eyes open and on the wall across from them is a picture of Otis pinned by a knife to a corkboard. “Fuck..” A soft moan leaves her as she digs her nails into Wydell's sides.

Some OC inspiration for HLVRAI fans who don’t know much about Half-life

So for those out there who only know HL from HLVRAI, you may not know about the extra models that weren’t showcased in the streams, as well as the content from the DLCs, and cut content. So if you wanted to make some OCs, here’s some neat character models you can start with to base them off of!

Construction worker:

He’s an unused model that can be found in the game’s code. He was likely meant to show up as a set piece, seen working around the facility

Robot grunt:

In the German version of the game, they changed some things to avoid a mature rating. They replaced all of the military grunts with this cool robot. It was then used as a multiplayer model for all versions of the game.

Otis:

A different security guard model found in both the Blue Shift and Opposing Force DLCs. He has a few different versions, with a helmet, with more hair, without mustache, and with darker skin. He’s always a kindly, doofy, mid-westerner.

Colette and Gina:

Good news for those want more female characters! In the Decay DLC for the Playstation 2 version of HL, you get to play co-op as these two ladies. Gina in particular has quite a few different models depending on the version, including an older model found as a hologram in the training course found in the original game.

Richard Keller:

Also found in Decay, Keller is an NPC scientist that guides the players through the campaign. He’s a bit temperamental and easily irritated with others.

Rosenberg:

Rosenberg shows up in Blue Shift and Decay, helping and being rescued by the protagonists. Fun fact, he’s voiced by the voice actor of Duke Nukem!

Adrian Shephard:

He’s the protagonist of the Opposing Force DLC. He’s unaware of the mission to kill the scientists, and spends the game just trying to survive as he’s left for dead. He gains an arsenal of weaponized alien creatures that he likes to pet. He’s 22 and canonically has a diary. At the end of the game, g-man puts him in stasis, and a lot of fans have been hoping to see him return one day. In a scrapped bit of story, he was originally supposed to lead a rebellion against his higher-ups against the orders of killing the scientists. Also, I feel it is very important to note that Opposing Force does in fact feature ropes that can be used to get over large pits.

That’s some major ones I’ll put here for now, but there are also a lot of other models out there. Almost every main character has one or more beta designs, and there are a lot of characters that are mentioned but never seen, as well as enemies that exclusive to the DLCs (such as race X). I encourage you to look around the wiki for more inspiration, or play through the games yourself!

Half-Life: Opposing Force But It’s Written by a Bot

Adrian Shephard is a damn good soldier and his orders were in black mesa facility. That mission was a huge morbid mess so Shephard attacked the chopper for crashing. Then a scientist named Walter found him and rescued the lost corporal. But the Shephard screams and arming himself with a bomb targets the zombie and turns him into unknown materials.

The other soldiers had left him behind and Adrian knew they were all bastards. Otis feels sorry for him and tells him to shelter but Shephard doesn't care and finds grenades to fight the chopper with. Race X appear and the standoff begins. The goddamn soldier strikes the dying aliens with the electric beam and says "you must die or I will machinegun ya asses to hell."

The survived soldiers want Adrian's help to fight Black Ops assassin so he runs into the hangar and exploded them until they were nervous. Barney starts to explain that the creature is coming but Shephard is already gone. The bomb targets all the facility. "Screw you soldiers and orders i'm gonna figure out how to leave" says Shephard as he attacked the chopper with a stick. The G-Man told him not to fight anyone any more.
