Half-Life: Opposing Force But It’s Written by a Bot

Adrian Shephard is a damn good soldier and his orders were in black mesa facility. That mission was a huge morbid mess so Shephard attacked the chopper for crashing. Then a scientist named Walter found him and rescued the lost corporal. But the Shephard screams and arming himself with a bomb targets the zombie and turns him into unknown materials.

The other soldiers had left him behind and Adrian knew they were all bastards. Otis feels sorry for him and tells him to shelter but Shephard doesn't care and finds grenades to fight the chopper with. Race X appear and the standoff begins. The goddamn soldier strikes the dying aliens with the electric beam and says "you must die or I will machinegun ya asses to hell."

The survived soldiers want Adrian's help to fight Black Ops assassin so he runs into the hangar and exploded them until they were nervous. Barney starts to explain that the creature is coming but Shephard is already gone. The bomb targets all the facility. "Screw you soldiers and orders i'm gonna figure out how to leave" says Shephard as he attacked the chopper with a stick. The G-Man told him not to fight anyone any more.

Honestly glad to see someone else lukewarm on Opp4 and Adrian. I played it the other day and i was like ??? I don't get it. I think HL1 and Blue Shift are cool because you're playing a character with attachments and a place in Black Mesa and then great googly moogly it all goes to shit. Opp4 you just... show up and nothing really gives you a reason to care about anything? More power to people making stuff for it ig. Also ow night vision googles bad why.

Oh good, I’m glad it’s not just me! Yeah, a lot of the appeal of HL1 and Blue Shift to me is thinking “I’m just a regular dude who works here trying not to die,” and OpForce doesn’t really have that sense of attachment or urgency, IMO. 

Also oh god I forgot about the night vision goggles. Screw the night vision goggles.  Side note: If Valve does decide to bring Adrian back and make him Officially Canon, that means all the Race X stuff from OpForce is also canon and I guess that wouldn’t be horrible, but it’s another whole layer of complicated lore that we don’t really need (in my humble opinion as someone who likes to know lore things but can only remember so many freaking aliens).

Adrien got completely boned from the first minute all the way until the gene worm

Gordon and Barney had the security and science teams at their backs and a decent knowledge of the complex

Gina and Colette had each other and Keller as an omniscient guide through Black Mesa

Adrian had to crash land and nearly die and then fight for his life from the moment he hit Black Mesa til the moment the grey guy decides to pick him up like a kid waiting at soccer practice

absolutely 100% agree man

adrian definitely had it the absolute worst out of any half life protag from the first games, dare i say even gordon (although his was the longest and he did have to deal with the most)

bros was exploded out of his osprey and the only reason he survived that was because some scientist's desperate attempts at giving him cpr managed to actually work

in the first few minutes of the game he's already been through something that rivals gordon starting the rescas, and it only gets worse from there

he has to watch as his fellow soldiers are experimented on, turned into zombies from a few curious scientists just wanted to see what happened when they put headcrabs onto their heads

and this is all before he even gets a weapon

it takes a good five to ten minutes into the game to get the wrench and, despite being powerful, it's slow and clunky and not very good for actual protection

not to mention while the guards and scientists can't hurt you in half life and blue shift, friendly fire absolutely is on for them in opposing force

i can say in my playthrough when you get otis to that hallway with the supply closet and the headcrabs break through, he doesn't even have to hit you dead-on to deal 40 damage with his pistol; effectively two-shotting you if you're at less than 90 health

and it wasn't even a direct hit; imagine how much damage could be done if otis had gotten a headshot

not to mention the random friendly fire between your own hecu troops as you travel through black mesa

i had a medic suddenly fire at me for literally no reason, and i had to kill him, effectively losing an otherwise very valuable medic

might i add the new aliens you have to encounter?

race x is one of the gnarliest species of aliens i've ever seen in any alien game, and i don't mean that in a good way

even the pitdrones are disgusting and annoying to deal with

and don't even get me started on the voltigores

adrian has to deal with at least 5 if not up to 8 of those things in the sewers with limited ammo that actually kills them, including two or three of the babies

not to mention the pit worm fight that's before the gene worm

there's no way to actually evade the pit worm other than running like hell, unlike gordon's encounter with those green tentacles where he could be quiet and distract them with grenades

this isn't even halfway through the game

you also have to deal with special forces and black ops attacking you, different from where gordon and barney only had to deal with them seperately, you have to deal with both in opforce

plus the room where you have to deal with special forces, black ops, and shocktroopers?

like sure they can kill each other and you can stand out of the way but you still have to deal with whatever's left and they're definitely not generous with the amount of health, armor, and ammo you have left at this point

also having to de-arm the bomb in the parking garage, only to have the gman re-arm it and close the way back through so you can't turn the bomb off again?

knowing that your every move is a race against the clock for when this bomb is going to go off, right before immediately being thrust into having to fight at least twenty black ops and special forces along with one that's manning a machine gun?

and then you have to go through the maze that's after that along with jumping across floating crates whilst avoiding the voltigores and shocktroopers spawning below you, only to get to where you have to fight the gene worm

and just to backtrack a bit, the water levels? absolutely fucking horrible

it got to the point where i was so sick of the ichthyosaurs that i seriously just stabbed one to death in the water

and the gene worm is also horrible albeit monotonous

and you do all this just to be taken in that same osprey (or a copy of it) by the gman at the end of the game, and be told that even though he used you to get jobs done for him you actually weren't supposed to know about black mesa?

he just barely saved you from getting bombed with the rest of the facility by convincing his employers to put you in the void

and you compare that to gordon or barney's journeys through black mesa (i'm not mentioning decay because i don't know enough about the game to comment on it)?

gordon's was hard and long yes but at least he was supposed to be there and was instead put into a 20 year stasis that really just felt like a blink, and the nihilanth was hard but he finished his journey long before adrian did

barney genuinely had it the easiest out of any of the protags, the worst that happened to him was having to fight the hecu and having to put up with a bunch of snobby, annoying scientists

adrian shephard seriously had the worst time out of all the half life protags in any game or spinoff (not counting hl2) and no one can convince me otherwise

can we talk about the gestation period of those big yellow pig sounding guys in opforce, like its just hitting me that those big fucks with children the size of medium dogs have time to fuck, grow eggs, lay eggs, let eggs chill, then have eggs hatch?? in like less than 2 days??? thats insane

Black Mesa just crashed on me near the end of Surface Tension (ran into the Gargantua and the game was like hmm, that's enough of that) but anyway playing alone and taking in the worldbuilding is a Lot. I really love how much Black Mesa fleshed out the NPCs, even in little ways. It's really easy to get into Gordon's headspace as this scared young scientist who doesn't know shit or fuck who's having the worst day of his life and having to kill so many people, so many monsters, and to what end--he has no idea if he's going to reach the Lambda lab and things will suddenly be all dandy or what. I've had to walk away from guards who are too injured to come with and it makes me soooo sad, like this dude's just gonna die here, all alone, huh? Fucked up. Just had a guard with Lambda codes let me through a sealed door only for him to be trapped on the other side with an alien grunt, and I felt so much guilt standing there unable to open the door and save him. And not to humanize the marines but listening to their radio chatter and conversations going from confident to "hello is there anyone there, we have over a dozen wounded and seven dead and we're pinned down by xrays and we can't move, please can anyone save us" really hammers home how the HECU grunts had no idea what they were walking into. obviously we see this in Opforce as well, during the opening sequence where the marines are speculating on where they're headed and why, must be training, maybe it's this or that, but Black Mesa has managed to make me feel legitimately kind of sad, listening to marines on the radio begging for help, that they're injured and dying and being told "stay put, use a tourniquet, help will be there when it gets there... hello? are you still there?" Even besides the marines, all the guards I find who have dragged themselves towards a medical station, almost made it, and then gone no further-- it's just good environmental storytelling!

idk I think Black Mesa is a great game and a good remodeling of Half Life and it's giving me emotions. you know, like feelings, like you had when you were a kid? good game, lots of fun. uhh, makes me want to start working on Bootboy AU again once Lentverse is finished up.
