SEMICORRECT QUOTES:
HIDDEN WIP
Veritheya: (mournfully) “On that day, 500 years ago, I lost my sweetest daughter, Eve, to those savage, heartless faeries...”
Achilles: (from afar) “QUIT TELLING EVERYONE I'M DEAD!”
Veritheya: “Sometimes... I almost think I hear her voice.”
Achilles: “AND STOP CALLING ME A FUCKING WOMAN!”
Veritheya: (slightly more aggressively and pointedly) “Then I realize there's no way she'd say any of those things, and that she never sounded anything like that, anyway.”
Achilles: (irritably, to himself) “And this bitch wonders why I disowned her and sold my soul to {Ailwyn} for safekeeping.”
Marri: (aghast) “Wait, she does?”
Achilles: (exasperatedly) “Yep. SOMEHOW!”
Veritheya: (a bit more loudly) “And that, my flock, is why you can never trust the fae, or fae-touched.”
Achilles: (under his breath) “Seriously, I don't know how so few people see through that garbage...”

“Your hair’s gotten longer.”
It’s conscious effort that keeps him from tucking the strands behind his ear, from taking the knife at his hip and shearing it all off. He keeps his stance focused, attentive, there’s little else he can do when he’s taken so completely after his mother when it comes to his hair. His father scratches his chin, the clouds of his beard snaking about his finger like mist parting for mountain-peaks. Ares’ chin is still child-smooth. He can feel the tickle of his over-long fringe against his soft jaw. There’s no heart in his chest, but still he feels as though a pulse is lodged in his throat.
Father sighs, put-upon, disappointed, and Ares feels a slight tremor start in his calves from holding himself so tense. “Well done, Ares. Go clean yourself up and get some rest. Phoebus will want to look you over later.”
He should be ecstatic to be praised by his father. Over-the-moon with joy. There should be pride emanating from every pore of his body, the blood on his skin should be sweeter than ambrosia.
Instead, he bows, manages a soft ‘thank you, Father’ around the lump in his throat and immediately flees the room. A mild ‘make sure to trim your hair’ hits the back of his head like a spear through the skull. He almost wishes the great door had slammed on his foot so he would have reason to feel this horrid in his retreat.
Phoebus Apollo is waiting for him in his infirmary.
He’s gilded as ever, gold from crown to heel. Perfect like the statues they carve of him in his temples. He has a smile for Ares when he sees him, a crinkle at the edges of his pretty eyes from the weight of his joy. Ares is waiting to see the crack in the marble, to see if that’s the chip that’ll reveal his fangs.
“Brother,” he greets, and his voice is warm - like the arms that embrace him, his voice is so warm, “Welcome back. I’ve heard you’ve done well.”
There’s a tremble in Ares’ fingers he hadn’t noticed before. Strain from carrying his sword for so many days, a throb from wounds he hadn’t noticed he’d accrued. “Heard? There’s already gossip?”
Phoebus blinks, disarming, demure, coquettish, “But of course,” and Phoebus’ voice is honey to Ares’ gravel, the juxtaposition is grating on his skin, “It’s Olympus. The gossip began long before you set your course.” Those warm hands lead him further into the room, bodily sits him on the chaise, pulls his helmet from his head. It’s all one, unbroken motion, “It’s summer alas, so I could not watch your war myself, but I hear it was quite the decisive victory.”
A thousand thoughts run on horseback through his mind then.
Did Father overhear some terrible slander that pre-emptively disappointed him? Was Ares’ victory merely a rumour, a bet his father hadn’t bothered to take? Was the gossip more enticing than the stark truth? That Ares wasn’t some child toddling about in the shadow of his sister, that his sword and spear weren’t merely for show - he’d think such a thing would warrant celebration. Not -
“Oh my,” Phoebus is in front of him, pleasant warmth more sticky heat with how close he’s pressed himself into Ares’ space. From this angle, Ares can see the multi-coloured flecks of his eyes, like shards of golden glass suspended in ichor. From this angle, with his hand so gently holding his hair, were Ares to blink too hard, he’d swear Phoebus looked just like his mother. “Your hair’s grown long again.”
He pushes Phoebus off with such force that he bangs into the wall. It’s Phoebus, it won’t make even the impression of a scratch on him, but Ares wishes it would. Wishes he’d hit his shoulder or crack his neck or hit his head just hard enough for all that perfect, gilded gold to bleed.
“I’m only here for you to heal me,” the tremble in his hand extends to his shoulder now. He flexes and unflexes his palm. Gods what he would give to just have a sword - “Don’t waste time with the pleasant-work.”
Phoebus huffs, adjusts the fit of his himation, “...Only because we’re meant to be celebrating your victory.” He crosses the room in two great strides, his hair a swirling tempest behind him as he gathers his poultices and wraps. “The only reason I’ll not throw you from the window is because we are meant to be celebrating your victory.”
There’s not enough acid in his tone for this to truly be a fight. Ares’ jaw clenches, he bites out a terse, “How benevolent.”
“Aren’t I?” He’s got nectar and his sutures in hand, that focused look falling upon his face when he switches from overbearing busybody to Paeon of the Gods. “Now strip unfaltering Ares, let us see the measure of damage done to your indomitable flesh.”
(Somewhere between the fifth set of stitches and the gentle frown that crosses Phoebus’ face when he notices the persistent tremble in his fingers, Ares pins his eyes to the far wall and asks, “What does it mean when Father says ‘well done’?”
Any other sibling would mock before they gave a true response. Any other sibling would laugh and dismiss it, would say that praise is praise and any lingering ill feeling is just the worst of the war still fogging his mind. Phoebus does not answer immediately. He doesn’t make a single sound. The question settles like fetid water between them, unignorable, the scent right there on the tip of the tongue yet firmly unacknowledged. Ares closes his eyes and tries again to settle his squirming so he does not interfere with Phoebus’ work. The metallic snip of scissors cutting thread breaks the silence. Phoebus bids him to sit up and slides his warm palms up his back until his fingers tangle gently in the ends of his hair. He twists the dark red strands until he’s gathered it all into a neat handful, holding it loosely as he switches his scissors for his shearing blade. “You should know it was not praise,” Phoebus says softly. The first of Ares cut hairs fall like viscera from his head. Phoebus treats each cutting with the sacredness of a blood-sacrifice. If he focused on the moment of tension right before the blade cuts though, Ares thinks he can imagine the agony of his sister’s sacred birth. “It is acknowledgement. Father thinks you’ve done well so he says ‘well done’.”
Gently, Phoebus releases him. Ruffles his head so all the extra hairs fall like red rain to the floor. Ares runs his fingers through the ends now curling against his ear. “Has he ever told you ‘well done’?”
A laugh, warm and gilded, “No, and it would not make you feel better if he had.”
Ares swallows down a thousand different questions. Phoebus wouldn’t answer them, he’s infuriating like that. Instead, he clenches his teeth, the phantom of Father’s dizzying tangle of grey cloud-hairs persistent in the corner of his eyes. “Cut it shorter.”
Phoebus doesn’t protest. He never seems to say a word when it really matters.)

The Ghost of Achilles
"Achilles is said to have appeared once to a merchant who frequented the island [of Leuke], relating to him what had occurred in Troy while entertaining him with drink, and he ordered him to sail to Ilion and bring him back a particular Trojan maiden, who was a slave to a certain man in Ilion.
The guest was astonished at the command, and boldly asked Achilles why he needed a Trojan slave. Achilles answered, "Because, my guest, she is from the same line as Hektor and his ancestors, and is the last of the blood of the children of Priamos and Dardanos." Of course, the merchant thought Achilles was in love, and after he bought the maiden he sailed back to the island.
Achilles praised the merchant and ordered him to keep the maiden for him on the ship (I suppose because no women where allowed on the island), but to come to the sanctuary that evening and feast sumptuously with him and Helen. When he came, Achilles gave him many things merchants are unable to resist, and said he considered him his guest friend, and granted him a prosperous voyage and fair sailing.
At daybreak Achilles said, "Now take these things and sail away, but leave the girl on the shore for me." They had not yet gone a stade away from land when the girl‘s screaming struck them—Achilles was tearing her apart, and ripping her limb from limb." (Philostratus. On Heroes 56. 6-10)

I got a private message from Bob on Patreon which I felt needed addressing in a public format:
“Marc: I am going to end my Patreon sponsorship of your podcast. The cursing on your podcasts irritates me and I don't think it syncs up with celebrating Irish culture nor a fun, family oriented atmosphere.
One example: the Magic Dragon podcast - - Forkroot "Coyotes at the Dump" from Water & Shade, about 20:16 mark.
So rather than me being irritated and you being irritated at my reaction, I'll wish you the best, but I sure don't get where you are going.”
I did respond to Bob’s comment, but I thought I’d address it here too. I did catch that explicit word in Forkroot’s song. Unfortunately, I was not listening closely to songs right before I headed out on vacation. They were the type of band that I did not expect to hear foul language from. So yes, I messed up.
I am terribly sorry for anyone who had to endure the explicit language. As you should know, I do my best to keep episodes of the podcast family - friendly. And as I told Bob, if you ever hear explicit language on the show, please please email me ASAP so that I can correct that error. I rely on your generosity to help me catch these problems.
I caught the language problem a day after the show went live and removed the song from the public version of the show. I left it in the Music - Only episode on Patreon, but that song was removed, also from the Celtic Top 20.
Check out this episode!

I love EVERY moment of Fabian referring to Riz as The Ball, dramatic intonation and everything, but I'm rewatching episode 14 (S1) and there's this moment when Riz shoots Biz's finger off? And Fabian goes "The Baaall, God!" and the whole thing is so surreal that I can't stop laughing.

I've tried to translate some interesting passages that I came across. Percy's journals are available online here:
Journal des campagnes du baron Percy
I'm unaware of an English translation though.
For context: This takes place during the battle of Eylau. Percy has called to the battlefield at daybreak of 8 February, the second day of the battle.
[8. Feb] […] On my return from the battlefield, where more than three hundred wounded Frenchmen were lying without it being possible to get to them, I went back to our sheds. [...] I found the surgical service in our sheds in full swing, but what a service! Legs, thighs and arms cut off, thrown with the dead bodies in front of the door; surgeons covered in blood; unfortunate people with barely any straw to themselves and shivering from the cold! Not a glass of water to give them; nothing to cover them; the wind blowing from all sides under the sheds from which the soldier was removing the doors to form his bivouac a few steps away. I had a few armfuls of straw, already broken, brought in to shelter these brave people a little; the barn doors were re-established on the side where the wind was blowing the hardest, and, after exhorting my collaborators, distributed by me on all sides, to hold on to the work as long as they could, I returned to my équipages, a quarter of a league away. As I passed the bivouac of the ambulance wagons, I made sure that most of the wounded would be given broth; I had candles brought to the surgeons, as well as a new supply of linen and a few more cases of instruments. [...]
[9. Feb] [...] His Majesty's aides-de-camp saw me and told me that the Major General was waiting for me with Monsieur Lombard, who had been sent for. I only had to jump from the Emperor's hut to my own, which was only two hundred paces away and was just as poor and destitute; I put on my embroidered frock coat in the open air and ran to the Palace, where Monsieur Lombard was arriving. The Major General showed us to His Majesty, who was lying fully clothed on his mattress and whose face radiated serenity and security. He welcomed us with respect and kindness.
- Do you have many wounded? - Sire, I think we have bandaged about four thousand. - Are the wounds serious? - There are a thousand of the most serious. - How many of the wounded will you lose? - A third, because the grapeshot and shrapnel have taken their toll. - Have you also had wounds from bladed weapons? - Many, Sire. One of your guards had the entire blade of a Russian bayonet in his upper thigh and buttock, the socket of which had been broken by the blow; we pulled it out of him without any effort and this wounded man will recover.- Have you seen our wounded generals? - I met General Levasseur with a fracture in the upper third of his left arm; General Leval had received a bullet under the Achilles tendon; General Heudelet had received one in the lower abdomen; General d'Hautpoul had his left thigh fractured by a biscay; General Augereau had been hit in the leg; General d'Allemagne had been hit by ten spear thrusts, including one in the lower abdomen that pierced the omentum. - Do you think you can save General d'Allemagne? - No, Sire: the bloody urine he has given up, the convulsive vomiting, the hiccups, the weak pulse, the insurmountable cold in the extremities, the anxieties, all presage a near and unhappy end. - And will General d'Hautpoul be all right?- I like to think so, Sire; he is in a castle two leagues from here and is expecting me this morning. - You cannot go there; you are obliged to everyone and not just to one. Why didn't you amputate his thigh? - It was my colleague Larrey who saw it and dressed it, and he told me that there was a good chance that the limb would be preserved. He asked Monsieur Lombard if he had anyone to help him. He was told that he did not; that there were no clerks, employees or medical staff, but that we had no shortage of linen, lint, instruments, etc. - What organisation! said the Emperor. What barbarity! - Sire,’ added M. Lombard, ’when one is sure, in peace, to be suppressed, whatever good conduct one has shown during the most painful and perilous war, it is difficult for one to have zeal and to decide to follow an army as an employee or as an infirmier; this very title, on our return to France, will be a detestable recommendation. - This is true,’ said the Emperor, ’because in fact there are hardly anyone but adventurers and people without a confession who throw themselves into the hospital business, which they abandon very quickly if they do not find any profit there. - Your Majesty, I felt I had to say, should never confuse his surgeons with such men, and yet their prospects are no more reassuring. - I am pleased with their efforts, their dedication and their good behaviour, and I want all this to be better arranged in the future; everyone will be sure to keep his job and there will be a lasting and military organisation. - Sire,’ I said, ’the proof of the need for this organisation is indisputable, and its advantages no less so. If your guard has provided a fairly good ambulance service, despite the time and place, it is because you have given it employees and medical staff, some of whom are officers and others soldiers: we need the same, and it is especially essential that our surgeons be trained as a corps, as I had the honour of proposing to Your Majesty. - Very well, then. What has become of your wounded? - Sire, the false alarm that occurred at one o'clock suddenly caused more than fifteen hundred of them to leave, who were tormenting us without being treated all at once and who were only slightly injured. I don't know of a better secret for clearing an overloaded ambulance.
The Emperor and the Major General smiled. Someone knocking on the door, His Majesty said, ‘Come in!’ It was an aide-de-camp of Marshal Davout. We withdrew after receiving permission from His Majesty.
–
Some time later, around the time of the battle of Gutstadt, Percy tries to convince Duroc in a letter to support a new organisation of the medical service and describes some of the problems the surgeons and their helpers face:
Monsieur le Grand-Maréchal, The disadvantages that my battle surgery project seems to present would disappear in your eyes if I could give you all the developments of this institution, of which I only had the honour of giving His Majesty and Your Excellency the simple text and the general bases. I am more and more anxious that battle surgery, or elite surgery, should cease to be a project and that it should be established on a footing worthy of it and of the services it should render. His Majesty has just honoured a large number of surgeons with rewards and distinctions; but surgery is still a precarious state, in which, after having endured great fatigue and frequent dangers, estimable and valuable men will find in peace, instead of a livable existence, a dismissal that is hopeless for them and harmful to the interests of the armies, from which disgust and spite will finally drive them away for ever. My collaborators fear this fate so much that several, even those in rank, have taken service as officers and have been received by His Majesty, who has shown surprise and displeasure. Sixty-four are currently asking to retire because in their absence, even though they have served five or six campaigns, they were selected for conscription, which has affected more than two thirds of them. Eighteen or twenty were sentenced in absentia, as draft dodgers or deserters, and the parents paid fifteen hundred francs in fines for these young men, at the same time as they were sacrificing themselves in the armies and some were losing their lives, either in hospitals or on the battlefield. We have some who, having become unfit for further service as a result of their wounds or contagious diseases that they had contracted, were handed over by the minister in charge to be conscripted into a regiment or discharged as soldiers. "Back to another time" historical fanfic
a question to all napoleonic fans out there:
What should be changed or improved if a time travel were to travel back into the Napoleonic era?
So it's no secret of mine that I've been planning of writing a historical fanfic of a surgeon leonard dunard who's a pretty big napoleonic era nerd travels back in time during 1794 the siege of toulon. I've been kind struggling piecing this story together because of the not so many sources that I can go off
I just have alot of questions and not so many answers.
Now of course I'm not really thinking about giving napoleon the biggest W of all time there are going to be struggles but I think we can all agree that the peninsular wars and the attack to Russia can be avoided.
But I'm not only thinking of the way of how napoleon could've won but I was also think of how our modern surgeon Leonard could improve the medical field more.
I know that our boy larrey is definitely going to be involved since he was in most of the campaigns.
So I will just write down my questions under here and hope that some of yall can answer it I'll even organize it from which battle/chapter it would be used for you can ask me to explain further if some of it doesn't make sense.
Siege of toulon:
-how would a young surgeon inlist themselves into the medical field of the army?
-what was expected from a chirurgien sous aide major?
-what were the major issues the in the 18th century medical field? And how can they be fixed?
- how could dunard(oc) meet larrey? (So in what way could they have met eachother and stay in contact without napoleon introducing them to eachother)
Italian campaign 1796-1797:
-was is it common practice for surgeons to be in the midst of an active battle rescuing patients ?
-could a surgeon be given command to a battalion if it was needed?
-were nurses a thing in that time? And if not how could dunard incorporate them in the medical field?
-why wasn't there symbol for the medics to indicate that they're medical staff?
Egyptian campaign:
-how did the French army handle the spreading of the plague and could it be more improved?
-if the French fleet would have won at the battle of the nile against the British fleet would the British do more to sabotage the French army? Or would they just give up?
-> and would the Egyptian campaign only have taken 1 year to finish? Instead of 3 years
Italian campaign 1800
- what if desiax lived would he and davout been a unstoppable duo?
-if messena got navy support would he have continued fighting?
-should napoleon not have split his army that much in the battle of marengo?
Napoleons reign 1804-1812
-would it have been better if napoleon didn't become emperor?
-is it possible for a surgeon to become a marshal?
-could alot of the coalitions have been avoided if napoleon took the right steps?
Now I'm asking these questions because I struggle to find answers to these questions and I genuinely want to discuss more about my history fanfic so that I can maybe make fun fic to read that doesn't completely go of the rails i do kind what to keep it "realistic" if you know what i mean. so if your interested in it as I am I would love to talk about it more ^^

Hyacinthus: Some of you have been wondering how I tell Apollo and Achilles apart
Hyacinthus: I actually think it's quite simple, really
Hyacinthus: Achilles is the scourge of Sparta sent by the gods to sack our cities and murder our men.
Hyacinthus: and Apollo has gold-blue eyes and blond hair! Hope this helps.
#pursuing daybreak posting#I made this exact joke verbatim to my friends months ago#But considering how this day's gone#I felt like it was prudent to immortalise it here too#just as a treat#hyacinthus#achilles#Actually I forgot what makes this ten times funnier#In my story the Trojan Conflict never even happens#LMAO#shoutout to apocalyptical occurences that completely stop Fate

Fandom: The Song of Achilles Pairing: Achilles/Patroclus
For Day 8: Tattoos of @patrochillesweek 2021! My final entry for this year’s event, ~1.9k words of the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed, with a side of feels :))
Read here or on Ao3!
I woke up to the soft brush of Achilles’ lips on my ear, his fingers gliding down my spine.
“Good morning,” he whispered.
The smile came unbidden to my lips, still laced with sleep's hazy mist. There was a mellow breeze drifting in through the opening flap of the tent, and the air smelled of mild incense, of pomegranate and sandalwood, of the oils Achilles used on his feet. His deep, musky scent always seemed to seep into our place of sleep, wherever that happened to be.
The world beyond our tent was quiet. The celebrations for Dionysus the previous night had carried on well into daybreak, so the Achaean camp was still in the throes of slumber. My own eyelids were heavy, as was the fog in my mind, and at the back of my throat the taste of strong wine lingered. I had been careful not to drink too much, yet, as unused to it as I was, its after-effects couldn't be entirely avoided.
The hairline cracks of a headache were pushing at the edges of my consciousness, but Achilles’ cool fingertips on my back were a pleasant distraction. He was propped on his elbow beside me, the golden waves of his hair cascading down his shoulder. The soft, trembling light from the lit brazier caressed the sides of his face, nestled in the hollow of his throat. In the gentle silence of our tent, he looked like the fragment of a dream, lingering only moments after waking.
“You've slept in,” I murmured, my voice hoarse. Achilles was usually up long before me, so that he could put on his armour and inspect his chariot and his horses, before any of his men had fully gotten up. Other days, it was to meet with Thetis at the beach’s shimmering shoreline. Today, he didn’t seem to be in a hurry to do either. “Are you not off to the battlefield today?”
Achilles shook his head. There was a slight frown of concentration on his face, his eyes following the movements of his fingers on my back.
“And your mother? Are you not seeing her today?”
"No." He shook his head again with a smile. “I’m busy watching you.”
“Is that so?” I laughed, my sleep slowly dissipating. I yawned behind my hand, rubbed my eye with my knuckle.
“Yes,” he said, his smile sharpening into his feline smirk. “It’s a most serious occupation.” He leaned closer to brush the tip of his nose over the shell of my ear, to nuzzle into my hair. A shiver ran down my spine, intensified by the soft brush of his fingers on my back, the warmth of his skin. We didn’t often get to have lazy mornings like these, sprawled on the furs for hours after waking with nothing else to do. I sighed and snuggled closer to him, relishing his touch and his kisses. It was only then that I noticed that a bowl of fresh mulberries lay between us, and the fingers that travelled leisurely up and down my back had been darkened by their juice.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Breakfast," he hummed, his arm coming around me. His lips tasted sweet, of honey and mulberries, and I kissed him eagerly, drinking in his lazy, sleepy sighs. "This time of year, in Pelion, the black mulberry trees are in full bloom."
"I know," I said quietly. "We would gather armfuls of them every morning, then go back to the cave to eat them. You used to like them quite a lot."
"I did. There were many things I liked there. Many things I miss." He let out a soft exhale, his eyes gliding over my features. “Do you remember,” he whispered, “our painted constellations?”
Our time in Pelion and under Chiron’s tutelage was never far from my mind. The small cave we once called home, with the rosy morning light reflecting on the jagged quartz crystals above us and the constellations that Chiron had painted on the ceiling flickered before my eyes. All those nights that we had spent talking in soft whispers, our heads bent close, our fingers tracing the shapes of the stars in the air.
A dull ache thumped in my chest, as it always did when I remembered the mountain, of all the memories we’d built there. I reached up to push a strand of golden hair behind Achilles’ ear, trying my best to focus on the here, the now. "What of them?" I asked him gently, as if afraid to stir the silence that had fallen between us.
“Have I told you the story of Cepheus and Cassiopeia?”
Only about a thousand times, I wanted to tell him, but I bit the words back. Of course I knew that story; I remembered every story behind every star, ever since Chiron had told us of them, his words mingling with the sound of his lyre or the cymbal he liked to play when he taught us our lessons. Achilles and I would often talk about them when it was just the two of us, when we went walking along the shore on nights where the stars were at their brightest, or huddled under our blankets, before we went to sleep. After so many years, I knew every myth, every version; I even knew the words Achilles would use to narrate them, I could predict the shift in his tone, his expression.
“You have not,” I said instead. “I’m sure I would remember.”
Achilles smiled, just a touch knowing.
Cassiopeia was the queen of Ethiopia, he said. She was a renowned beauty, as well as the smartest, most ruthless of monarchs, ruling her kingdom with an iron hand. Her husband, Cepheus, never cared much for ruling, and was always happy to leave such concerns to his wife. Though the two couldn’t be more different, they loved and respected each other, and had a blissful and harmonious marriage.
Many years passed, and Ethiopia blossomed under Cassiopeia’s rule. However, the stronger and more prosperous her kingdom grew, the more vain she became. One day, she declared that she was more beautiful than all the women on earth and sky, that not even Hera herself could compare to her in beauty or grace. The vengeful goddess was far from pleased with Cassiopeia’s declaration; to punish her hubris, she tied her on her throne with unbreakable chains, and flung her so high up into the sky, that Cassiopeia and her throne were lodged amongst the stars.
Cepheus, when he returned to the castle and found out what had happened, was inconsolable. He cried and pleaded with Zeus to let him be with his wife, even if that meant leaving his wealth, his children, his kingdom behind.
“Do you know what happened next?” Achilles asked, pausing to eye me mischievously.
We both knew I did, but I shook my head.
“Are you sure? I do remember telling you that story before.”
I brushed the outline of his smiling lips with my fingertip. “Tell me again,” I whispered.
Achilles' his smirk curling into a grin; I couldn't help the affection that bloomed within me at the sight. “Well,” he said, taking on his storyteller's voice again, “Zeus was so touched by Cepheus’ pleas, his devotion to his wife, that he granted his request. He placed him next to Cassiopeia, among the stars, so that they could be together for eternity.”
I nodded and hummed with interest, as if I was hearing the story for the first time. Achilles beamed at me, pleasure and delight softening his features. That story was amongst his favourites, and we had recounted it to each other countless times; he had even composed a song for it once, several years before. I could never get enough of seeing him like this, smiling and carefree. It reminded me of the times when it was just us, far away from this place, with only our stories and Chiron's gentle presence to keep us company.
I shifted to lie on my side, lacing my fingers through his.
“Why do you like this story so much?” I asked him, perhaps for the first time. “Cassiopeia committed hubris, and the gods punished her for that. She lost everything, and she’s now destined to stay among the stars forever. It’s quite a sad tale, is it not?”
“Cassiopeia was vain and egotistical, yes,” Achilles shrugged. “She enraged Hera and other gods, and her vanity brought countless ills among her people and her family. But, despite it all, Cepheus still loved her. Their bond was strong in life, and even in death they can never be parted. People will sing of their love for centuries, for eons to come.” He tilted his head to the side. “Not too sad, as far as tales go, hm?”
I stayed silent for a moment, pondering his words. “It would have been even less sad, I think, if Cassiopeia had never challenged the gods. If she'd understood her mistake and acted to undo it, the gods might have forgiven her. Then, she and Cepheus would have been left to live out the rest of their years in peace.”
“People can’t help their nature sometimes," Achilles replied thoughtfully.
"Yes," I sighed. "Unfortunately, that is true."
"All I know is that, were you Cassiopeia and I Cepheus, I would have done the same."
"You would?" I teased. "Even if you had to grovel before Zeus?"
"Even that," he grinned. "I would have followed no matter where you might have ended up, after Hera flung you away.”
“In that case then,” I laughed, unable to hold it back anymore, “I hope I don’t end up stuck among the stars upside down, like poor Cassiopeia did.”
Achilles’ shoulders shook a little as he laughed, his eyes gleaming with mirth. He sat up on the pallet and took me by the hand.
“Come,” he said. “I have something to show you.”
I followed him curiously, laughter still fresh on my lips, the sheet that had covered me slipping from my body. He pulled me gently out of the bed, guiding me before the looking glass near the entrance of our tent, facing away from it.
“Here,” he said. “Look.”
I glanced over my shoulder at my reflection, and then stared in surprise. The skin of my back was covered in small, dark dots where Achilles had drawn on it with his finger, using the red-purple juice of the mulberries. Polaris rested on my left shoulder, Ophiuchus on my right. The Pleiades lay in the dip between my shoulderblades, and on the curve of my lower back was where Cassiopeia and Cepheus stood.
“You did this?" I turned back to him. "While I slept?”
“I’ve never seen you sleep so deeply,” he said, grinning at my puzzled expression. “You didn’t stir once. I had to take advantage of it."
I laughed and shook my head, warmth creeping up my cheeks that he would do such a thing without me realising. “You are a menace," I chuckled and poked his shoulder, pretending to be miffed, though I knew he could see right through me.
“I know,” he said with a grin, amusement and affection sparkling in the emerald depths of his eyes. His hand found its way to the small of my back and I let myself be pulled into his embrace, my arms coming around his shoulders as if by rote. His fingers glided down my back, tracing the patterns. "You look so beautiful, like this.”
I shivered lightly, leaning into his touch. I knew that the shapes he'd so carefully drawn on my skin were far from permanent— they would easily disappear with some soap and a few swipes with a damp cloth, but I realised I didn’t want to be rid of them so soon. The ceiling of our tent in Troy may not have had our painted constellations, but they were on me now. More than that: we both carried them with us. Our life, our memories, written in the stars.
“Patroclus,” Achilles said slowly, the syllables dripping from his tongue like honey, as was his way. I knew well what he meant, when he said my name like this.
The words hovered between us, like bright constellations on a dark winter night. I breathed them deep, spinning those threads anew as I sighed them against his lips.
“I love you, too,” I whispered, “Achilles.”

i really enjoy looking up the names of ancient greek vase painters, because oftentimes we don’t actually KNOW their names so we give them a name based on what they painted or where some of their works were found or something about their style. which means sometimes you get really nice conventional names like “the daybreak painter” or “the achilles painter” or “the foundry painter”
and then sometimes you get names like poor fucking “elbows out”
#tagamemnon#i love elbows out's works. they're charming#queueusque tandem abutere catilina patientia nostra
