Something that I noticed recently about HW and that I absolutely love is how he lets sleeping dogs lay. Whenever he has a conflict with any member of the family, the moment that conflict seems to be resolved, he lets it go. For example, with Chase in Rules and Regulations. This is one of the few, if not straight up only times HW and Chase get heated (I don’t really count the time Chase got hurt, since it wasn’t really interpersonal), but after the episode, HW always puts the extra effort to meet Chase in the middle (All characters do, and considering Chase is neurodivergent coded/ heavily autistic implied, that’s such an amazing thing to show kids 💙) Blades is another good example, after the video game incident he doesn’t give Blades grief over being scared. Even when before it was more low key, after it almost stops. It’s so interesting considering the type of character HW is supposed to be. The only character he seems to keep beating with the stick is Blurr, and let’s face it, he needs it. Damn, Rescue Bots character writing really is something else.

And y’know, that’s the thing I love most about HW as a character

When I first started the show, I genuinely thought that the direction of HW’s character is gonna be the usual hotheaded character that never apologizes, never takes responsibility for their actions, goes against orders, and so on, and I for one genuinely thought HW is gonna be a character I’d hate cause of it, but as I watch more and more episodes i’m genuinely baffled (in a good way) by how Heatwave is written

Yes at the beginning of the show you see these usual traits of what Hotheaded characters are like in HW, (and it makes sense to see them as HW IS a hothead), in ep3 he blames Boulder and Chase when Cody gets upset with him for making fun of Blades, in ep10 he ignores Charlie’s words about thinking of people first and takes matters into his own hands, etc

But what’s baffling (again in a good way) about these traits is the fact their occurrence is very far in between each time it happens, like i want you to let it sink in that these traits are not even the norm for Heatwave, the norm for HW is to take responsibility and accountability for his actions, actually try and learn from his mistakes, is very serious about his job, is protective of those he loves, and it genuinely made me question my sanity, like AYO? What the fuck is even HW’s character

But the answer is simple, he is a hothead yes, just not what you’d usually expect a hothead to act like, and I for one think it’s amazing

I love when shows actually take character tropes and twist them and put in their own touches on them, not only does it give a refreshing take, but also gives a lot more depth to the character

You’d think HW is the type to hold a grudge, or be so into proving he’s right while others are wrong, but nope, this boi actually takes a step back when he makes a mistake and admits he was wrong, HW learns from his mistakes and tries to improve himself, and doesn’t that make a lot more sense for a hothead like him?

Hotheaded characters usually try to be the best at everything, and wouldn’t he be become better and better if he actually admitted his mistakes rather than live in a fantasy that he’s just right all the time?

That aside, speaking of meeting Chase in the middle, you’re so right, and it’s really beautiful, not only that, but for a heavily implied autistic character like Chase, he’s always shown to be competent and more than capable on his own, and I actually think that’s pretty important to show, the world needs more autistic characters like Chase

The thing is with HW, is the fact while opinionated, he still tries to put the comfort of his friends first and that’s such a wholesome thing about him

During the argument, HW actually tries to do what Chase asks him to do, HW could’ve easily used his authority as the leader to simply order Chase to follow without attempting to contact Kade, and the thing is, Chase would’ve followed the order even tho he doesn’t like it, and HW knows it

But HW relents and actually does what puts Chase’s mind at ease and does try to call Kade, and I love it so much

HW tends to do that a lot, he doesn’t force anyone to do something they don’t want to do, the only times he does is when their saftey is a priority

A lil something I want to bring attention to is HW’s tendency to use the phrase “that’s an order” around Chase, HW knows Chase is obsessed with following orders, especially when it’s directly stated with an emphasis like that, but what i love oh so much is the fact HW never abuses that kind of authority and especially not with Chase, he RARELY uses it, and of the few times he did? He used it to make sure Chase doesn’t put himself in danger

The greatest example of this is ep5 of S3 “unfinished business”, HW uses “that’s an order” 3 times in that episode, the first is when they need to go to stasis cause of the energon eater and Chase protests cause he wants to help the people of the damaged ship, HW says “into the stasis pods, now!” then adresses Chase specifically saying “Chase, that’s an order!”

The second time is when Chase hears the message again and tells HW they need to get back, HW is rightfully suspicious and thinks that, hell na, nobody’s going anywhere and especially not stubborn Chase so he says “no Chase, and that’s an order” only for Cody to convince HW to let Chase go

The third time is when Chase and Boulder are about to take the Sigma and are saying goodbye, Charlie tells Chase to “be careful, come back soon” and HW follows that by saying “that’s an order, Chase”

See the pattern? Every time HW uses his authority it’s when he’s worried and wants to keep Chase safe and oh my god does it melt my heart

Of course, Hw still sometimes misuse his authority like when he tells everyone they’re not allowed to celebrate Allspark day, but what I also love is the fact he never truly tries to force them, he just tends to voice his displeasures and grievances

Same with Blades, but in Blades’ case HW is never worried about his saftey cause he knows Blades’ values it, but as you said he does get a tiny bit harsh when it comes to Blades’ anxiety/fear, but then by that point of the video game episode, he realizes he misjudged Blades’ bravery and even goes as far as telling everyone what happened, and you can tell by his tone how proud he is of Blades, HW never says “I’m sorry” outright, but he does show regret and tries his best to fix his mistakes, and repair any damage they caused, he even calls Blades “the bravest of them all”

And just as you said, he lets sleeping dogs lie, he never tries bringing it up again or giving anyone a hard time for something that happened before, he just moves on

Hw taking a step or two back to genuinely consider his approach with things is what makes him a great leader, and an even greater friend, and that’s why you can see his growth so clearly in the show, i’d easily say that by S4 he’s a lot more gentle, considerate and patient than when the show started

As for Blurr?? Damn I actually feel bad for both him and HW, but Blurr makes it really hard to deal with him, and HW might’ve become a lot more patient but he’s still not that patient wheeze

Y’know in a way I feel like HW sees himself in Blurr, at least to an extent, so he does give him chances to get better, but Blurr keeps fucking up due to his reckless nature, but it’s obvious Blurr thinks highly of HW and genuinely wants to make him proud and HW seems to want to actually train Blurr to be a great rescue bot cause he sees that potential in him

The only problem is that these two are too hotheaded to effectively communicate, one wants to be carefree and not to be bound by rules, the other wants this carefree spirit to watch out and actually look at the world around him

Blurr has the “everything is against me” mindset and rarely takes the blame for his actions, and I think that’s what angers HW the most, HW wants Blurr to slow down and actually take in the situation and understand where he fucked up, but Blurr is really bad at seeing the problem and I believe to some extent, is cause Blurr thinks a bit less of himself

But my favorite thing is actually seeing Blurr getting better at taking responsibility for his actions and slowly becoming a better rescuer

The thing is, HW is a bit harsh on Blurr, but does give him credit where its due, when Blurr took the Sigma only to turn back to save GR, HW admits he misjudged him and even seems to genuinely regret being so harsh on him, when Blurr gets on the ground HW is conflicted about whether to yell at him or hug him and i find that really adorable hchcchch

But you can tell how HW is way gentler while dealing with Blurr afterwards, the frustration is still there but he’s become more patient with him and is a lot less demanding and it’s nice to see how their relationship develops from there, hell, even when Blurr fucks up time and again afterwards HW simply asks wtf he’d been thinking but the way he controls his voice and tone, it’s amazing

Anyway, you’re so right the character writing in this show is fucking fantastic, it’s honestly its greatest strength and I’d literally die for every one of them, they’re my beloved <33333

8. what's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

i can't think of any trend that i see that really irritates me, though part of that may be the corners of fandom i have tucked myself into. he has a lot of layers that i was too stubborn to acknowledge until well into the better part of shb, and i think sometimes fandom isn't forgiving enough after his growth arc, but honestly i'm really not too fussed because i think he skates through on hot white boy appeal in fandom at large. i think it's possible to appreciate where he started, where he wound up, and how he got there without excusing his many mistakes, but i also think it's important to talk about how he worked through it. so that's my answer: i think fandom is either too easy on him or too hard on him with no room for nuance. i keep saying i'm going to write an essay, but idk if thancred needs me to defend him. maybe someday i'll go feral and do it anyway.

25. what was your first impression of this character? how about now?

god i cannot stress enough how much i gave absolutely zero shits about him when i first met him. even given what happens with lahabrea, i wasn't really moved. he screamed 'bland white-haired jrpg protagonist' to me and i only cared because for some reason which wasn't clear to me until i read the short stories, minfilia gave a lot of shits about him, actually. and i adore her. i didn't care about his angst in hw, though he grew more personality and by the end of sb i at least went from indifferent to 'fine, i guess he's here, too'. then, like many people, i spent a good deal of shb utterly pissed off at him until it became obvious to me that he was, despite what i think a lot of people believe, trying his best while drowning in an ocean of trauma with almost no tools to handle it. by this time i'd read his short story content, and understood the context better. i was very ride or die for urianger from arr on, and yamisnuffles teased me that he 'comes with a husband' and i was determined to refuse. i couldn't tell you the exact moment, but sometime around going to the moon i suddenly gave a shit enough to select him as the scion who visits you in your suite at the baldesion annex. and, well, fuck off. i discovered i cared a lot, actually.

now i have a pathetic wet cat in my ot3. i affectionately call the eden raids 'kit's family camping trip'.

same question for elidibus. my ultimate angry murder and get murdered husband.

i have to start by saying that the ascians as villains compel me more than almost any villains in any media i've ever consumed. even accounting for recency bias, they utterly fascinate me, and i don't know if i've ever been so moved by villain motivations. the unsundered specifically strike me as so tragic that it makes me feral. even lahabrea, who i really find difficult to like. but that's retrospect after the entire arc of their part in ffxiv. after lahabrea and nabriales, elidibus came in with a different approach, and that intrigued me. of course i had no idea the larger role he'd play later, but the way he attempted to stand on a moral high ground really hit some buttons. again, i was really into urianger from the get-go, and their apparent partnership gave me a lot of OH NOES to latch onto. i think elidibus is the character that allowed me to really give emet-selch consideration beyond 'my bestie loves him' because he gave me an inclination that there was more to the ascians than had been revealed so far.

he piqued my interest, then enraged me because of ardbert, but the more i learned about his past along the way the more invested i became. the shb patches slowly killed me, and by the end of seat of sacrifice i was sobbing for him. he's just a little guy fighting for the all but forgotten souls of his people. he was pivotal in saving the world, driven to madness by it, and in the end, all alone as the last of the unsundered. yet there are characters within the narrative who lie about him and his motivations. i'm choking up a bit right now thinking about it.

suffice to say pandaemonium rewired my dna and entire brain. by the end of it i was devastated and so in love with him as a character it's almost embarrassing. he was kind, thoughtful, and gave of himself wholly to what he believed in. his connection to wol is so beautifully bookended by it, and the ways he winds himself with them throughout the entirety of the game just hits every character button i have. the very tragic wol/elidibus ship with kit wrote itself in my head from the moment you drop into elpis. i spent a lot of time wondering how he got from the careful man we meet to zodiark and beyond, which is what compelled me to write to the edge (and back again). now i kill him at least three times a week. it's fine. i'm fine. i'm very normal about the unsundered, and most normal about elidibus.

Okay, so here's something entirely unnecessary; a review of an MMORPG expansion that came out six years ago. Hooray!

A little bit of background; I've been slowly making my way through the FFXIV expansions, in fact very VERY slowly because my attention is being pulled in 20 different directions at any given time and this game is so very, very long. I share a Discord server with some good friends and there's a section for all things FFXIV, and opinions on Stormblood are probably some of the most divisive I have encountered so far. One friend, who we'll refer to as J, really didn't fancy it at all, whereas another friend, S, enjoyed it and thought it would be, I quote 'exactly your kind of bullshit'.

So now that I've finished Stormblood and have started engaging in horrors such as 'cartoon chocobo drags party to Computer Hell Fightclub' and 'a raid with FREAKIN' MATH in it' everyone wants to know what I thought of Stormblood. So naturally, I did the normal person thing and created a blog to write the review up on in detail. LET'S GO~

It's been ages since I actually started Stormblood, so some of my recollections will likely be off. Hopefully this will just add humour, as I don't really mind myself and will not be making corrective edits :^)

Introduction: Welcome to Ala Mhigo

After briefly being reminded of the overarching plot of the whole game and following the trauma of watching Papalymo explode, we're thrown into another 40-hour long sidequest as Omega Weapon ker-chunks over the wall into Ala Mhigo and Lyse-Not-Yda-in-Fact suggests this is the perfect opportunity to help her people fight back against the Garlean Empire and end the war. Cool. Cool cool cool.

This is your Warrior of Light for the trip, Yhen'a Astolya. Both he and his sparrowhawk are a little unimpressed that 'get the Weapon' has turned into 'save entire nation from a 10+ year imperial occupation', but at this point that's just #WarriorofLightThings so he's resigned to his fate. At least he's cute. None of his outfits suit his personality because the character I re-made him from liked to show off his assets if you catch my drift and I'm yet to change many of the glams but. You'll see.

So anyway, Gyr Abania. What a shithole. NO REALLY SSHH The fist map is really kinda boring, and I get why; it's hard to make a desert map too interesting while still retaining the classification of desert. And here we have a whole nation that is in mostly desert. For what it's worth I think Square did a great job with their concept, but I can't help but wonder what Garlemald saw in taking this land over. I know, I know, they think they're doing us all a favour by bringing enlightenment to the savage heathens, blablabla, like any ol' antagonistic empire. Sure. But usually that's a leading reason with other factors, you know, and things like resources and land position are taken into account. I guess it's a great and easy way to send invasion forces through to the rest of Eorzea, but what else was there?

The internet didn't tell me, it just kept trying to give me timelines and essays, but I'm sure I missed the answer in a section of dialogue I skipped or something.

UPDATE: I said I wouldn't do these but to avoid Experts coming in to school me, another friend of mine we'll call A has said the Garleans went through Gyr Abania cause it was the only way to get to Eorzea. And their aerial invasion failed pre 1.0, which is not content I've played. They don't have a navy, b/c they're landlocked, but they made this amazing big 'unsinkable' airship that was supposed to be able to single-handedly conquer the whole world, then Midgardsormr (or as A refers to him, Dragon Daddy) said no, and destroyed it.

Anyway.

So Lyse leads us to Rhalgr's Reach after a pretty harrowing side-quest concerning an abandoned town that was used by the Garleans to experiment with some kind of magical plant plague, which was honestly kind of interesting. The Garleans suck, man.

Rhalgr's Reach is gorgeous, a nice breathe from the drab map between Baelsar's Wall and it, but first a note on the music so far.

I enjoy the new battle music well enough; it's a mix between cowboy movie rifts and traditional eastern music that somehow really works, and also makes me feel a bit like Indiana Jones, but I'm not a fan of the national anthem of Ala Mhigo following me everywhere in different forms on the map. It's okay if it's a quiet refrain version, but when the bombastic brass comes into it, it just turns me off the flavour of the game entirely. I don't think this was intentional, its just a very nationalistic approach, which is all well and good for a story about a resistance who are clearly very patriotic trying to fight off invaders and its absolutely being used in good faith, but any band of patriotism is always a bit much for me so I played a lot of this expansion in Ala Mhihgo areas with the music turned down.

So we're trying to form an alliance, and getting resistance from the usual suspects. We get re-introduced to Arenvald around this time too, who is one of my favourite tropes of 'strong man softboi' so I take to him instantly. There's a few little battles and skirmishes, and Lyse is feeling pretty g about our ragtag little Alliance before things, as they do, go pear-shaped.

Enter Imperial Viceroy Zenos yae Galvus, otherwise known as 'golf douche'.

I cannot take credit for this amazing and hilariously accurate nickname. That would go to J. Leading up to this moment they were all 'have you met him yet, have you met golf-douche?' which honestly gave him an air of mystery he entirely did not deserve.

(seriously, I'm a cat-dad and Zenos has maybe two facial expressions, this one being his 'head empty no thoughts (but murder)' one, but the fangirls think he has a rich inner world. Nobody who owns a cat sees this face and thinks that.)

People seem to love Zenos online, and I can only assume it's because he's both pretty and disturbed; that Discount-Sephiroth face and hair, with hips and thighs so thick he probably cracks Ala Mhigan skulls between them, plus he waxes poetical about murder. You know, all the things the straight whyte girls who write yaoi love in a top.

Anyway, he's a bit of a fuckwit, and he has a fuckwit golf-caddy that he carries his extra swords in (sword-caddy?) thus the nickname, so it was a little embarrassing getting absolutely reamed by him. I was on Dark Knight too, so like, let's be real Squeenix, I would have won on sheer endurance AND edge if it hadn't been one of your fun 'you can't win this battle but have it anyway for dramatic storytelling purposes' moments that we all k̙n̘̝̻o͖̙̺̣w̷̫̞̤ ̮̙̤̝a̡̤̠ͅn͓̲̩̱͕d̷ ̦ͅͅl̶̺̪̟͚̼̣̞o̶͖̪v̘̜͎ͅè̥̮͎̘.

Our party decides that because golf-douche almost murderised all of us in one fell swoop and Lyse is still feeling pretty sensitive about the whole Papalymo thing, the best option is to travel to an entirely different and very far away nation, and help them defeat the Garlean occupation there so that a) the Garlean's and hopefully golf-douche will be distracted fighting a war on two fronts, and b) the other nation will then feel indebted to us and obligated (or strong-armed? They never quite clarify) to come help fight the Garleans in Ala Mhigo.

I am instantly a bit uncomfortable about this. It's presented both in a way that makes it seem like we're trying to do good by two nations rather than just one, but also very coldly as if we're playing war to suite our own overarching agenda, which will then force these people who have been terrorised and occupied for over a decade, to come fight another war they have less (if no) stake in.

I suppose 'the fate of the entire world and the Crystal Mother Lady' is a pretty good excuse when it comes down to it, but there's still a vibe of 'end justifies the means, and because our quest is an honorable one we'll make these tough decisions for people' vibe that just doesn't sit too right with me. These nations being freed from Garlean rule isn't the goal here, it's just a favourable side-effect of our actual plan. This feeling does lessen a little later when it's made more obvious that the whole team is very invested in helping out Ala Mhigo and Doma and it's more that we have to prove to the Alliance that it's a worth-while investment in a colder way. But towards the start, yea, felt weird.

Oh, and we met the Angy One! She's a great character, one of my fav antagonists in the expansion actually. But you don't know that yet at this point of the game, she's just a nation-traitor everyone hates, and for good reason. Actually, nobody really likes her, not even on her team, but she keeps going on ahead anyway.

I do also feel like we're leaving Ala Mhigo way too soon, before I really had a chance to become invested in it, you don't even get to finish the first map (The Fringes) and this isn't helped by the Doman leg of the game being by far more visually interesting and narratively compelling, but we'll get to that next time, in part two.

So far, a little underwhelming. Pros:

Learning more about Lyse's character, actually quite like getting to know her.

The battle music

Rhalgr's Reach design is pretty stunning

Good location names

The Hidden truth > Drawing a Blank questline

And a bit of a longer list, Cons:

The 'national anthem-esque' music

The Fringes is a boring map in visual and mechanics design

The story is slow to move

Golf-douche archetype is two-dimensional and ugh

Are we playing games with entire nations just to get to our shiney Omega Boi

Barely in Gyr Abania before being whisked away to a far more interesting area and narrative, as if the game devs didn't believe in it either.

Hello, my name is Topaz. I accept all pronouns but still prefer he/they more than any. This blog will be low activity. I work full-time and am disabled. I also run multiple blogs. That being said, I am typically around on my Warrior of Light blog (@/brightblessed) to some capacity. This character has a lot of dark themes ingrained in his backstory. And while I won't go into extreme detail, there are implications of extensive abuse of all kinds, violence and death, child abuse/neglect, and self-destructive behaviors. These things will not always show up, but they are in the character's backstory to an extent, even if they weren't committed against the character himself. I will always do my best to tag things in the following format ( /// content. )

Some blog/character-specific rules:

This character is only 17 in HW. Because of this, I am uncomfortable doing any sexual content with him regardless of his age in any part of the timeline. That being said, he is asexual and sex repulsed. There will be no smut on this account. If anyone pushes this, I will block them. I will accept conversational innuendo and stuff, but he is not interested in the slightest. He is still young and I am not comfortable having him in any of those situations even after he turns 18. 

This character is very morally questionable. He can be quite toxic, as he had a very toxic upbringing and really doesn't know much better. He has a lot of issues and no close connections. 

This character's development is verse dependent. It heavily depends on the actions of those close to him. He can get better or worse. 

Hlyndur is an assassin/double agent. He is part Garlean but it is NOT obvious upon looking at him. While he doesn't have any love or true loyalty to the empire, he is working for them. Unless he makes an obvious mistake (which is not super unlikely to happen), your character should not magically know he is working for them. If they have good reason (like them also having extensive history with the empire), they likely could know. Even then, Lyn has been MOSTLY a secret to only his father. It would require plotting if your character knew. I am not saying you can't find something off about him. He is very obviously not a normal person, but please don't instantly have your character know without prior plotting. Part of the fun of this character is seeing if he embraces escaping the empire or stays with them. 

There is some... slightly lore-bendy stuff in here. Mostly due to his fighting style, which is a blend of rogue and reaper. Despite being a ninja/rogue in-game... He doesn't have any skills of a ninja per se. He made a contract with a voidsent and has abilities more aligned with reapers despite fighting more like a rogue. 

General rules:

Any anti-LGBT+ bullshit is not allowed. If you are a terf, I will block you. If you are racist, blocked. Honestly, if you are right-wing at all, I am not comfortable with you. I am not interested in knowing people that think some people don't deserve rights and that promote the suffering of others. 

If I am interacting with someone that makes you uncomfortable, do not hesitate to approach me about it. I do not want to put anyone in that situation. 

Please PLEASE content tag cutting (pictures only), pregnancy, hate against lgbtq people, or car/plane accidents. I find this all very upsetting. 

Do not rush me for replies. Do not push me into anything I say I do not want to do. 

Messaging me every single time I come online to chat ooc and then getting mad when you see me doing stuff and not answering you is not tolerated. I have a social battery that drains very quickly. I can't always respond and converse. 

If you constantly post negativity or vague blogging about others, I will probably softblock you. It makes me very uncomfortable to see.
