a note about rejections, because maybe someone else needs to hear this

in the past few months i have been rejected from multiple undergraduate journals and conferences, as well as a summer program i desperately wanted to get into. it has been incredibly discouraging, and i have found myself doubting my skills and abilities, as well as questioning whether i should even be pursuing this path in philosophy.

but in this field, you have to believe in yourself, believe in what you are doing, and remember why you are doing this in the first place. you only need one yes, and you are worth the time and effort that you have put in to your own life.

i wish i could say that i am saying this when i have gotten an acceptance, and that i could say for certain, from my own experience that everything will work out. but i am still in this place of doubt, but i will keep going.

if you are reading this, keep your head up, and keep going. believe in yourself, i believe in you, and others will see what you have to offer !

a big lesson for me was learning that most things are not as fragile as I’d believed. missing a class, or turning in a bad assignment, won’t instantly destroy your professor’s opinion of you. accidentally saying something harsh won’t make your friend want to end the friendship. it takes work to repair these things - it takes effort and research and sometimes a sincere apology - but you can do that because they’re not irreparably broken. what you’ve worked to build, in academia and in relationships and in life, is stronger and more enduring that your mind may teach you to believe. don’t let imagined fragility lead you to giving up
