So you've heard about the DC Absolute Universe and you're wondering what it is all about.
While details about Absolute DC is still coming out, I decided it might be useful to make a breakdown of what we know so far (mostly from SDCC).
DC Absolute Universe Breakdown:
The Absolute universe is a new alternate universe influenced by Darkseid energy. It is a 'darker' universe where all the heroes have lost something key to their Earth 0 selves which leaves them as underdogs. While separate to the main universe it will link in through the events of the All In initiative. There doesn't seem to be many superhero teams yet, but a lot of iconic heroes have had their own solo series' announced:
Absolute Batman (By Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta):
The series brave enough to ask...what if Batman was an absolute unit. This is a Batman with no money and no status as the Prince of Gotham. Instead he is a construction worker and city engineer who has turned himself and his costume into an absolute weapon. He has an adorable French Bulldog and is also apparently blonde.
This Bruce Wayne never had a butler but there still is an Alfred in the Absolute Universe: Alfred "Penny", the grizzled and tired MI-6 spy. They seemingly meet for the first time when Bruce has already began his caped crusade against crime (and the series' confirmed big bad Black Mask)
Bonus: The Jim Lee variant cover gives us a better look at his costume's armoured texture and one of his weapons. He's seemingly more of a heavy hitter than the Batman we know.
Absolute Wonder Woman (By Kelley Thompson and Hayden Sherman):
This Wonder Woman was raised not in Paradise Island but rather in The Underworld. She has no sisters and no quest for peace. Instead she is the last of the Amazons who becomes a warrior and a witch, and eventually the Absolute Universe's first superhero. She is more heavily armed, carries a massive sword, and flies around on a skeletal pegasus made of iron.
Unlike her Earth counterpart who is notable for not wearing a mask, this Wonder Woman seemingly has two, including a rather demonic looking helmet. Also, her colour scheme is based less on the American flag and more on the idea of lava under rocks.
She also has a Jim Lee variant cover which suggests she also will have a lasso.
Absolute Superman (By Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval):
Superman is the member of the trinity we know the least about. He is supposed to be more alien (suggested by his glowing red arms and the fact the cape seems to be made of pure energy) and according to the solicitation is "Without the fortress... without the family... without a home" but honestly we don't know much more.
We do have some cool art though (including another Jim Lee Variant):
Absolute Green Lantern (By Al Ewing and Jahnoy Linsday)
Absolute Green Lantern is a "first contact" story and "reimagining" of the Green Lantern mythos featuring Jo Mullein, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart. We have some cool concept art of it including a redesign of Jo that suggests the lanterns might be in civilian clothing illuminated green.
Absolute Flash (By Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles)
This is the book we know the least about. All we really can infer apart from the creative team is that the Flash is presumably Wally West and that he appears to be more tortured character than in most other iterations.
(Shout out to Bleeding Cool for posting photos of the SDCC slides for people who weren't there)

If you guys need a reason to be excited for DC’s upcoming ‘All-In’ initiative, I was only regularly reading Action Comics with the occasional interesting mini-series, but now I got five ongoing titles on my pull list!
Seriously, Action Comics by Mark Waid! Al Ewing writing a Green Lantern book! Kelly Thompson’s Absolute Wonder Woman looks so badass! Jeff Lemire and Tate Brombal writing JSA and a Cassandra Cain Batgirl book respectively!
It feels good to be this excited for DC Comics again!

I wish the solicitations for the Absolute series told us a little more. I'm trying to do more pre-orders with my local comic shop, both because i've missed some things (had to get the 3rd printing of Absolute Superman #1), and Diamond's troubles are likely to make distribution more chaotic for a while. So adding things to my list beforehand will hopefully make things easier for me and the folks at the comic shop. However. Check out these blurbs for three new series coming out in March.
Absolute Flash #1 JEFF LEMIRE AND NICK ROBLES SPEED INTO THE ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE! Without the mentor…without the family…without the Speed Force, what's left is the Absolute Scarlet Speedster!
Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 DENIZ CAMP AND JAVIER RODRIGUEZ TRANSFORM THE ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE! Beyond Mars…beyond physical form…beyond Human Understanding…all that's left is the ultimate alien: the Absolute Martian Manhunter!
Absolute Green Lantern #1 AL EWING AND JAHNOY LINDSAY GET COSMIC IN THE ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE! Without the Corps…without the ring…without the willpower, what's left is the Absolute Green Lantern!
Ok, we have a strong theme here, and that's good, but it doesn't tell me what the comic is about. It tells me what it's NOT about, which doesn't tell me anything that's not already inherent in the basic concept. The one about Martian Manhunter seems like it will be more heady or philosophical because they used "beyond" instead of "without", which is a smidge more, but still (and the covers contribute a lot to that impression). So i have to go with attachment to the character, whatever feelings i have about the creative team, and how cool the cover is -- the same things I'd have if there wasn't any solicitation copy at all.
So...I guess I'll skip Flash. It could be interesting to see how they explain his powers without the speed force, but then, the speed force only showed up in the mid-90s, and Barry had been around since the mid-50s. I read plenty of speed-force-less Flash stories when i was a kid. Ditto the mentor stuff. Maybe it will be great and i'll be waiting for another 3rd printing, but i can't buy everything.
Maybe i will add Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern to my list. MM looks trippy, and sometimes i dig trippy superhero comics. Also, I tend to enjoy Javier Rodriguez' art. GL at least looks cool on the cover. The emotional spectrum thing has dominated GL series for too long IMO, so hopefully this won't use that idea. This GL isn't without a ring, though. Look at their ring finger. It's hard to believe they don't have any willpower, too.

Absolute Wonder Woman is slowly pulling me in, but I'm still not crazy about it like many seem to be. Still have no interest in Absolute Batman and Superman though. I'll probably check out Absolute Flash and Green Lantern simply because they have writers I like.

Youtube rage baiters are already furious about this unnecessary ‘new’ green lantern, saying a book with her won’t sell well and her existence is obvious pandering. That they should just bring Hal Jordan back (as if he doesn’t have a current ongoing)
But like it’s just a reimagining of Jo Mullein who’s been a thing since 2019 and the multi award winning series Far Sector by NK Jemsin which has been considered by dc as iconic/popular enough to reprint as part of their compact comic line. Who’s shown up in other lantern runs since. Also if you want Hal Jordan in this series so badly I have great news for you: it’s already been announced he’s in it along with John Stewart.
Sometimes I feel like the term fake fan should be allowed but only for these bad faith bigots.
