shout out to this scene from the last Olympian that’s been kicking around my brain since 2013
image description under the cut
Start ID.
Image 1: a digital illustration of Percy Jackson holding Pandora’s jar. Inside the jar is the spirit of hope, emitting a glow onto Percy’s face. Percy is looking at the spirit and smiling tenderly. Percy has tan skin and black hair, with a grey streak. Standing protectively over Percy and the jar is Hestia, smiling down on them.
Image 2: A close up on Elpis, the Spirit of Hope, inside Pandora’s jar.
Image 3: A close up on Percy’s face.
Image 4: A close up on Hestia’s face.
Image 5: An excerpt from The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. The last three lines are highlighted. The excerpt reads:
“I picked up Pandora's jar. The spirit of Hope fluttered inside, trying to warm the cold container.
"Hestia," I said, "I give this to you as an offering."
The goddess tilted her head. "I am the least of the gods. Why would you trust me with this?"
"You're the last Olympian," I said. "And the most important."
"And why is that, Percy Jackson?"
"Because Hope survives best at the hearth," I said. "Guard it for me, and I won't be tempted to give up again."
The goddess smiled. She took the jar in her hands and it began to glow. The hearth fire burned a little brighter.
"Well done, Percy Jackson," she said. "May the gods bless you.”

Jiang Xuening flipping the script and being increasingly into Xie Wei the more unhinged & messily desperate about her that he reveals himself to be absolutely makes sense for her character.
The girl from the countryside who always knew her mother was searching for someone else in her face & felt a distance there, where they were harassed and never accepted by the villagers... and then came to the capital to find her "real" family where she had been replaced and could never catch up, finding it impossible to compare with the talents and poise of her replacement, who spent years realizing she can't please her birth mother... The woman who climbed up the ladder to be empress in her orginal life so that she could reach what she thought was the 1 unassailable point that demanded the respect & admiration that she's been craving, who since learning the truth of her identity lived in panicked grasping fear that everything she had would be taken away from her. Though at first she's instinctively running away from intimacy because she can't trust it, everything in her instinctively lights up at connecting with someone she feels a physical attraction to AND can't have their attention and love stolen away or shared. Once she realizes and accepts in her heart that this person can be all hers, with NO BRAKES ... She likes that he's obsessive and too much and damaged. He's hyper competent, she believes he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to, and what he wants the most is HER? Sorry not sorry this is 100% Jiang Xuening's secret sauce, she can vibe out on that forever.

morgoth really had a whole gaslight gatekeep girlboss abusive relationship with the humans in the tale of adanel huh. like the way he initially approaches them -- still young, still new to the whole existence thing, still learning about the world, still vulnerable -- and manipulates them into loving and trusting him. and once he has their love and trust he starts pushing the boundaries. he starts to issue terms, conditions, and ultimatums that they have to abide by if they want to keep his favor and backing. he's straight up telling or implying to them things like "if you don't x, i'll y," "you have no one but me, but i have everything without you, don't test the limits of my generosity and the kindness i've shown by helping you as i have." it's legitimately reminiscent of an abuser

gotta love it when your first father-son activity with your dad is pretending to be a british butler to infiltrate your dad’s ex-bff’s house (who’s a raging misogynist and terrible person btw but he didn’t know it when they became friends)

i think positing loghain's patriotism over everything else actually directly ignores loghain's characterisation in both tst and the calling. as far back as tst, loghain's goal was never the liberation of ferelden from orlais. i do think & agree that he hates orlais, and he's furious about the occupation, but he also doesn't rly seem to think there's any way to oust them. he doesn't see the point in trying & he doesn't understand his father's sudden loyalty to a "king", to maric. he looks out for maric, not out of a sense of patriotism or duty to his country, but because it was the last wishes of his father - something maric himself makes explicit when loghain attempts to abandon him. loghain sacrifices hundreds of soldiers to save maric - to maric's fury. it's maric who is patriotic. loghain takes over maric's job in the calling not because of ferelden but out of love and concern for maric. he tries to talk to maric about his depression several times and he comes back to denerim specifically & explicitly to support maric after rowan dies. he does the same after celia dies, to support anora and cailan.
i don't think patriotism is really what drives loghain. it's loyalty, it's love. loyalty to his father, because he loves him, leads him to protect maric and act in (what he thinks is) maric's best interests. loyalty to maric, because he loves him, is what leads him to protect ferelden and act in (what he thinks is) ferelden's best interests. protecting maric - who his father sacrificed everything to keep safe - kept his father's principles alive and, in that way, he honours his father. protecting ferelden - which maric sacrificed everything for - keeps maric alive and honours maric. and if the warden wins his loyalty, he's willing to follow the warden's lead on whatever they think is best - whether that's the dark ritual, or for either of them to take the sacrifice, or anything else.
to me, it seems like his patriotism is a symptom, not a cause. i don't think it's as clear cut as loghain makes it in his dialogue in dao, but i do think he's self-aware enough to accurately gauge his motivations here. he says that he didn't do any of this because he hated orlais, he did it because of maric. and when the warden comments that maric is dead, loghain's response is telling.
why should that matter?

Samples of abandoned palace architecture of Ukraine:
Tereshchenko Palace The village of Chervone, Andrushiv district, Zhytomyr region. The style of the palace is Neo-Gothic. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century at the expense of the Polish nobleman Adolf Groholsky. The estate was bought by Ukrainian industrialists and philanthropists - Tereshchenko brothers, who expanded the palace and the park. The palace began to fall into disrepair with the arrival of communist regime. After 1917 here were located a children's boarding school and vocational school. Later the building survived a fire. Nowadays, the palace of the Groholsky-Tereshchenkos belongs to the women's monastery of the Holy Nativity of Christ. In addition to the palace, the stables, the left wing and the fountain have been preserved.
Oosten-Saken Palace Kyiv region, Kyiv-Svyatoshinskyi district, between Myrotske and Nemishaeve villages. It is believed that the palace was built in the 19th century at the expense of Count Karl Saken. It was an Ancestral estate. The count's descendants had the surname Osten-Saken, which is where the conventional name of the estate comes from. In Soviet times, the palace housed a biochemical plant. After a fire broke out at the factory, the palace burned down and only the walls remained.
Dakhovsky Palace Village of Leskovo, Monastyryshche district, Cherkasy region. The style of the building is Neo-Gothic. Leskiv Palace was built at the expense of magnate Casimir Dakhovsky in the middle of the 19th century. The complex consists of a palace, outbuildings, service premises and stables. In June 2013, the palace received the status of a historical and cultural reserve of state importance.
Palace of the Muravyov-Apostles the outskirts of Khomutets village, Myrhorod district, Poltava region. The estate was built at the beginning of the 19th century by a descendant of Ukrainian hetman Danylo Apostol - diplomat Ivan Muravyov-Apostol. The palace is surrounded by considerable French park. Ivan Muravyov-Apostol left the estate and went abroad after the failure of the Decembrist uprising.
Popov estate Vasylivka town, Zaporizhzhia region. The style of the preserved buildings is Neo-Gothic. Vasyl Popov, a general of the Russian Empire, founded a settlement here at the end of the 17th century. In the 19th century, the grandson of the general, who was also named Vasyl, developed the estate and built numerous farm buildings.
