changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.

I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.

Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.

No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.

But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

MDZS AU where Jiang Cheng realizes that Lan Sizhui is the Wen orphan that Wei Wuxian took care off during the Burial Mounds arc, decides that's close enough to qualify him as Nephew, declares that no Nephew of His (much less a surrogate son of Wei Wuxian's) is going to be raised in the Cloud Recedes, and immediately launches into a custody battle with Lan Wangji.

But since neither Jiang Cheng or Lan Wangji can acknowledge that Sizuhi has any connection to Wei Wuxian, both begin steadfastly and stubbornly insisting that he is a Cultivator of peerless potential and skill and he belongs in their sect thank you very much, and would clearly be very unhappy in the other's. This confuses the hell out of the already mystified Cultivation world, who had barely adjusted yet to gossiping about Sizhui being Wangji's illegitimate child by mysterious love affair.

(Eventually the common consensus in the rumor mills is that both JC and LW where in love with Sizhui's mother and both believe themselves to be Sizhui's real father.)

(LW couldn't care less what gossips say, but JC has to bite his tongue till it bleeds to avoid telling anyone the truth in a fit of anger.)

(It was Nie Huaisang who put that rumor out in the first place, partly to troll JC, partly because, in a way, it's a little true.)

anyone else have multiple traumatic memories associated specifically with holidays/family vacations? because that is a topic I never see discussed in all the So You Had A Shitty Childhood, Now What? self-help books i've been reading. but for me, it was a significant thing. and the more i think about it the more it seems like this would be an (unfortunately) common experience. would be grateful to hear if this matches other peoples' experiences...

I'm just thinking of an au where SY is the peak lord of the beast taming peak and he has a rivalry with SQQ but due to both of them having more decorum than LQG they aren't on sight drawing swords but like fighting through proxy

Like imagine SY sniping LBH and then SQQ makes it his life purpose of make MF be stronger than that little beast. So MF and LBH have a rivalry because well... their Shizuns say they should

So when LBH ends up having his demon heritage revealed SQQ snidely goes "oh wow my shidi was raising a demon" and they're both at each other's throats about the comment

Idk if LBH should end up actually falling into the abyss but no matter what I want BingFan to happen. So either he doesn't fall in and SQQ discreetly helps SY hide LBH's demonic heritage (he doesn't want this rivalry to end and like I guess SY would be sad or something. barf. emotions 🤢) And the rivalry goes on like normal except Ming Fan is careful to not trigger the seal to break again

Or LBH falls in still but MF tries to pull him up but ends up falling in too. So both SQQ and SY can be disturbed that they were so busy bickering they didn't notice their disciples fall into the abyss

Then they can both bond over that trauma. And like it can be that everyone notices that SY and SQQ aren't trying to kill each other with as much vigor as before and are rather depressed about the whole thing. They could start going to each other to have someone to share the pain with or something and slowly their relationship can become softer

When BingFan finally come out all powerful and stuff, SY immediately starts mother henning and apologizing like a distraught mother.

I just think it's funny to have SY being all like "my poor sons that must've been so scary! :(" while MF and LBH are doing pretty well with y'know ruling the demon realm and all things considered but like they never had this treatment before, so ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

SQQ is telling him that he's being dramatic (he is but like let him be)
