July 2024 fic roundup

Here are the highlights from this month! I really love doing these. It helps me be more engaged with what I’m reading and actually remember individual fics once I’m done with them (rather than stuffing them in the collective “fic soup” in my brain, where they’ll combine together until there’s no hope of remembering details). An instant addition to my holy grail list! This is the first fic I’ve read by this legendary author (I think?), and BOY HOWDY do I see why they’re so revered. I finished this fic in one sitting, reading late into the night (yes, I was very tired at work the next day).

I think it’s best if you go into this one mostly blind. All you need to know is that MSR are teetering on the knife’s edge between UST and RST, there’s plenty of cancer arc angst, and they go on a spooky adventure that will give you the creepy crawlies.

📝📱 Belphegor’s Prime by prufrockslove

Another absolute banger from the legend themselves. This fic is as close to perfection as humanly possible. The way everything comes together is just incredible. If you haven’t read it yet, do it now! Shirk all other responsibilities and devour this fic in one sitting!

One of my favorite things about this fic is how ruthless Mulder is. I don’t think I’ve encountered a version of him quite like this anywhere else. His intense love for his family and his innate sense of duty are intensified to the point where he skirts the boundaries of what’s morally acceptable. He’s so desperate to protect his loved ones and fix the world that he will do anything, even if he risks becoming his father(s). It felt so organic and natural for him to become that version of himself under the extreme circumstances.

Anyway, if you’re a fan of time travel, DILFs, or characters whose greatest strengths become a curse, this is the perfect fic for you!

This is one of those fics that leaves you gobsmacked that someone wrote this for free and posted it online for anyone to enjoy. The amount of detail in this story is truly unbelievable. I don’t even normally like total AUs, but this one won me over!

Mulder and Scully’s medieval counterparts are so far removed from anything in canon, yet they still feel exactly like the characters we know and love. This fic is an absolute master class in characterization. I am now a prufrockslove stan account.

As for your question, *cracks knuckles* I’m glad you asked.

I’ve already mentioned this but Hermes’ love language is acts of service and gift giving, Apollo’s is physical touch and words of affirmation, and Aphrodite’s love language is all of the above!

Hermes’ acts of service mainly comes from the fact that he’s always THAT GUY you go to if you want to need to run some desperate errands. When someone asks him to do something, he still does it, but for either two reasons; he needs to bcus that's his duties as the herald of the gods(willing, but neutral abt it), or he does it bcus he WANTS to(he LIKES that someone. He wants to bcus he wants to SATISFY that person). That second reason is where his acts of service is.

As for gift giving, self explanatory. But instead of buying those gifts, Hermes steals it. He finds these little adorable trinkets while fulfilling duties and thought his lovers would LOVE these. And, instead of buying it like a normal person, he puts them in his bag and flies away.

Apollo and Aphrodite know all of the gifts are stolen. Immorally wrong? Yes. Do they care? No.

As for Apollo, his love for physical touch runs DEEP, ROOTED in his soul. He needs to be physically CLOSE to his lovers or else he DIES. This comes from the fact he've seen his mortal lovers dies. so many times. Can’t even count with his own fingers. It’s kind of like an instinct for him to be in the same place with the ppl he loves is at.

I unintentionally made this more angstier than I intended. But I promise you, Apollo is just a very clingy guy.

Aphrodite and Hermes finds this very endearing. Mwah.

Also random headcanon; Artemis absolutely HATES physical touch. The only people she allows physical touch is from her brother, their mother, and her huntress friends.

Apollo’s word of affirmations comes from the fact that he’s the god of music. Music has lyrics. Lyrics are words. Bam! Words of affirmation.

Aphrodite, being the goddess of love, everything she does is an act of love. But if I were to pick, hmmm I guess physical touch, words of affirmation and quality time.

I imagine her as a pretty touchy gal. Not as touchy as Apollo, but pretty close! The warmth of bodies being near each other brings some peace into her soul.

She absolutely LOVES giving nicknames to practically anyone and anything. My love, my sweet, darling, you name it!

A small headcanon(projection); quality time is PEAK for her. Possibly her favourite way of showing love out of the 5 love languages.

Her go-to hangout is one of those classic tea parties with fancy tables and teacups in her fancy palace.

She and Apollo have frequent tea party hangs out!! And they talk abt how absolutely smashable Hermes is.

Y’know while I’m typing this out, I think Hermes’ love language would also be quality time.

He has so many tasks and so little time to hangout with his lovers… yeah, he cherishes every second of their presence.

Hermes’ nicknames given from his lovers are little bird, little messenger, Herms, little lyre(Apollo’s fav)

Apollo’s are sunny, polly, pollo, blondie

Aphrodite’s are dite, dove, doll, my pearl

They have more nicknames, but these are the ones I mainly use when writing hehe

Hermes and Aphrodite both have curly hair but have DIFFERENT hair care routine.

Aphrodite takes care of her long Rapunzel ahh hair like it’s her beloved child. While Hermes washes them once a day and hope for the best… Aphrodite is the reason his hair still looks pleasantly decent.

Speaking of hair, Apollo would have random strands of curly hair clinging on his head, skin and even inside mouth. He can guess which belongs to who.

Hermes is not a fan of preening his own wings. So, he finds every excuse in the world to have Aphrodite and Apollo do it for him.

“Come on, don’t these wings look like they need some serious preening?”

“Ugh, I’m too lazy to preen them myself! But if you were to help me…”

It stressed Apollo out seeing those feathers all ruffled up. The fact that Hermes can tell he wants to preen them so badly stresses him out even more.

Aphrodite doesn’t mind preening them. Though, she does tickle those wings as ‘punishment’ for having her do it.

Hermes’ wings are extremely ticklish. A trait that both Aphrodite and Apollo finds absolutely endearing. They tickle the hell out of them feathery thangs everytime he acts like a brat.

These three. LOVES. cuddling. The amount of times I’ve drawn them cuddling is insane.

Whenever Aphrodite’s on her period, she clings to Apollo like her life depends on it bcus Apollo is so warm(god of the sun, and all that).

Apollo can’t even play his music with Aphrodite wrapping her limbs around his body(not that he minds).

And finally, Hermes’ favourite musical is The Greatest Showman(projection). When he alongside Apollo and Aphrodite watched it for the first time, he fell in love, absolutely HEAD OVER HEELS for it(projection). Ever since then, he forces the two to watch that movie together every time they have marathon night(projection).

The Sign - Ep 4

*sexy sound*: hooya! This series keeps on giving ✨

Let me start by saying that this whole police-investigative part is extremely silly, funny and not reflecting reality (apart from the moment when captain inspector team leader Akk says "that a victim is a victim no matter the gender"), but who am I kidding! I'm not here to analyze police work! So I completely ignore this part. Although I must admit that the police part provides incredible entertainment in the form of Captain Inspector Team Leader Akk (always), the introduction of a new, cool character accompanied by the dramatic sounds of classical music, or the interruption of an intense scene between MLs with important information about the discovery of severed genitalia 👌👌

Apart from that, as always, I like everything. I love how Tharn is shown as just a regular horny gay dude who just thinks about dicks lol How many other BLs, where b stands for BOY, show this? I also like that his fantasies are of him letting Phaya do things to him, being vulnerable by exposing his neck, being pinned down, covered by his lover's body. I also liked that Tharn relives these fantasies in the light of day and indulges in them 🤩 Oh, "sleep wherever you like" was an invitation and that's a fact you will have to pry from my cold, dead hands 😤

I love how this show keeps creating "their things", constantly building them into a couple that has their own behaviors and traits in common, before they even become a real couple. Now it's a shirt grabbing. I love it, I love it when something like this appears and I know 100% that I and the rest of the fans are in these moments like 👀👀 *di Caprio pointing at tv meme*. For me, it's a very important part of a romance when the couple has their "things". "Don't let me hear you talking about you being dead ever again" is such a powerful phrase. Raw. Just as Phaya likes.

I REALLY LIKED THIS WHOLE SCENE WITH THE FURIOUS PHAYA. Everything was perfect here. I really like that Phaya got the opportunity to show this side of him. That he is shown as an angry man, that he is not an ideal man who can control his - also negative - emotions in every situation. Normally, I don't like or tolerate such situations, because the reasons for such outbursts are usually stupid. In this case, I absolve Phaya of his aggressive behavior and his outburst of anger towards Tharn, pushing him away. It wasn't ignoring his calls, which Phaya immediately confronted and resolved. It wasn't an outburst out of jealousy or something like that. This is a completely different, serious situation that only partially concerns his relationship with Tharn. I'm absolutely sure that Phaya has often wondered whether he is mentally ill and that it is a source of a serious fear for him. Mental illness is a taboo in all cultures around the world, as Tharn himself says at the beginning of the series regarding his visions. A physically ill person will be perceived differently than a mentally ill person and Tharn knows this, PHAYA KNOWS THIS and Dr. Poison knows this. The second thing is that Phaya genuinely cares for and trusts Tharn. So at this point Phaya is in agony because not only has his most personal fears been brought to light, it was done by a stranger, a person he can't stand, who is his rival, who finishes him off with the final blow in a calm way when everything inside him is falling apart, but what's more, the blow came from a direction that Phaya DIDN'T expect at all. Phaya asks Tharn several times: "Why did you do that?" because he feels BETRAYED. Phaya is also a proud man who wants his beloved to see only "good and cool" qualities in him, which is completely normal in any relationship, hence his heartbreaking question "DO YOU THINK I'M NUTS?" Really, this scene is great: - Phaya angry, humiliated, hurt, betrayed, barely able to control himself (but even then he doesn't hurt Tharn, the scene is full of aggression and screaming, but Phaya never once crosses the impassable (for me) boundary, he doesn't beat Tharn, it's not even a fight, only two adult, trained men, one of whom pins the other) -Tharn, who is shocked because for the first time Phaya ignores him, does not look at him, it is clear that he is truly angry with him. You can see how Tharn is lost in this new situation, as he stands uncertainly and asks "I'm talking to you. Can you hear me?". And even then, he immediately shows concern for Phaya and his wound on his forehead

I'm grateful for showing this version of Phaya, and also for showing him as a silly, goofy guy throughout the episode in various funny scenes. 👌👌

My theory is that Tharn didn't tell the doctor about Phaya's dreams, I feel like the doctor KNOWS about everything and is a figure who simply has knowledge of what's going on as a deity. He knows when Tharn is especially close to Phaya, as seen in the temple scene, the kiss scene, in breaking of the photo frame, also when he tells Phaya that they will see each often other from now on, when he invites him to dinner with the clear intention of destroying him. I feel like the doc just KNOWS about Phaya's dreams.

Wild theory time! To expand on my original theory, this old woman/girl has helped Wansarat in the past and is helping him now. Wansarat is reborn and in each incarnation dies in childhood as punishment for what he did while saving his lover, Garuda. But this time he survived because he was placed under the care of the abbot of the temple, which is,in a way, his temple. And now, for a first time, Wansarat as Tharn is all grown up and delicious and the one for whom Wansart was originally intended - Dr. Bitch - he finally has a chance to get him. If it weren't for that Pesky Bird 😀

i grew up on 70s classic rock and Pink Floyd / ELO are my favs from that era. Doors and Billy Joel are cool too tho.

My exbf introduced me to a lot of 90s stuff. Deftones, Cake, Nirvana, Incubus. I explored a lot of grunge and post-hardcore myself. Huge fan of Hum and Failure. less so stuff like Soundgarden or STP or AIC but I like them too.

Also I enjoy midwest as well as first wave emo. Sunny Day Real Estate, Cap’n Jazz, American Football. Little bit of 5th wave too. Saw Origami Angel live. 👌.

I’ve dabbled with indie. Lots of 90s stuff. Radiohead, NMH, Andrew Bird, Duster, but also stuff like Alex G. Huge fan of BCNR. If you like Twin Fantasy, Ants From Up There is like the straight version of that album. Love The Mountain Goats too.

That about sums it up I think. Oh, I’m exploring the Cure and more goth stuff rn but who knows if that goes anywhere.

21 - What is your favourite story arc?

The first thing that popped into my head was the City at War arc from the Mirage comics, which has its flaws but has a lot of really interesting elements in it - Splinter and Casey in particular have some really meaty stuff going on, and Donnie had a moment which I really enjoyed.

Also a huge fan of the classic 'Leo (or on one occasion, Raph) gets thrown through a window plot, obviously!

I tend to like smaller segments of a series rather than whole arcs a lot of the time though I guess (ADHD brain likes things in small chunks....) - I could ramble for days about individual episodes / issues / scenes / panels though!

27 - Something you love to see in TMNT fan art/ fics?

I'm a sucker for fluff and family/ platonic bonding, so any fan art or fics that give me the turtles and friends being loving and affectionate with one another is just... 😘👌

Like the rest of the story can involve whatever but like. Give me that sweet wholesome character interaction at some point and you're golden, basically.

I have my own versions of TMNT characters, if that counts! I do also have a character that I made using the TTRPG, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness, ages ago, who I would love to try and insert into my AU somehow. He's a Northern Cardinal who has a really broad Bronx accent, a leather jacket, and just one single brain cell. 😆

Armand leaps out of exploding elephant. Chaos ensues. Eric escapes. Chaos during disruption. 8/10, ok who TF is ERIC? As in Bogosian? Or is Eric a Talamascan? I love the nod to QotD (& TVL) though, with Lestat's concert being a bust and chaos erupting cuz of silly vamp shenanigans, when poor Les is just tryna have a good time. 🎶

Lestat invited to give commencement address at Transylvania University - 10/10, y'all at AMC are VISIONARIES.👌There really is a Kendrick fan in the writer's room; K-dot gave the commencement speech in Compton and it was beautiful. I reckon Lestat's speech would be...interesting. 😅

You're half right, Nimo! While I'm not a STEM student, I have been taking writing classes. And I do like sci-fy, tho I'll admit I'm picky with that genre. Like I'm not a fan of Stars Wars, but I do like Star Trek. Specifically the Kirk and Picard generations (courtesy of my mom who got me to like them lmao). I do love Twilight Zone, Tin Man----basically any part of scify that goes into supernatural elements/creatures or fantasy I usually find myself drawn towards. Aliens are always going to be hit or miss with me. Some are 👌 others just aren't my thing. I do like alternative dimensions and mad science adventures tho. Like Doctor Who or Rick and Morty is so much fun. Also Gravity Falls is literally my spirit animal.

From Tinker Bell and Shirley Barber to the wicked and gorgeous and grotesque ones you'd find in modern ya like Holly Black's books all the way to their origins in golk lore. I just love fairies. I 100% blame my mom for this and maybe the fact I grew up on Winx Club and in Barbie's Fairytopia era as well. Like tbh fairies were everywhere when I was kid and all the toys for them went above and beyond. Looking back it feels like the perfect storm to fall in love with these mischievous creatures 💚

After playing through all three LI routes in the visual novel, I started looking through more information about your blog.

While I love all of the routes, Reed seacrtly over his childhood friend for years, Jewel and MC falling in love when they're both on the run 🥰. Learning Laurent is a fan of classic nior films just makes his romance more hilarious for me in hindsight, considering the MCs Allure ability and illegal activities are traits usually associated with the classic Femme Fatale, but they're also framed for murder and unwittingly involved in a conspiracy so they got some damsel in distress mixed in.

I had no idea about this when I first played Laurent's route because when I created my MC Liz Morren, I gave her a vintage wardrobe and eyes like Elizabeth Taylor. She does hide her natural violet eye color with colored contacts, being a tier 5 Allure is difficult enough without having a rare eye color that would make her easier to potentially identify. Also, considering her limited funds, she can only really afford shopping at second-hand stores, and women's fashion from the 40s and 50s tend to flatter her curvy build better than most modern fashion.

Can you just imagine when Laurent first started visiting the perfume shop and then this sales girl who looks like she just stepped out a classic Hollywood film in live color gives him the most charming customer service smile? The poor bastard never stood a chance.

See, what I love about shipping is that you can take a crumb and mold characters into however you see fit. There are soooo many continuities across Transformers, each with their own interpretation of characters. Sometimes I get specific, but sometimes I operate in continuity soup...

With that in mind, I generally like to see them as master spies. To me, they are experts in their field, which makes every interaction-- both with each other and with other characters-- dubious. You end up having to ask yourself: how much of Jazz's smile is genuine? What is Soundwave omitting from his recollection of an event? That sort of thing.

So as a fan of the pairing I get to play with those interactions depending on my mood... are they lying to each other all the time and I have to read what's between the lines to understand their true intentions? Or could the other mech be one of the very few people that sees through the facade, a mech who offers security and honesty? Perhaps it's a mixture of both...

I imagine the inability to trust is pretty inherent to their nature, deep down. They have to be skeptical of everything, their job never really ends, so to entertain a story where they grow to rely on one another is just *muah* 👌 Plus there's the added layer of interfactional angst! Like aaaaaa there goes the one other person who could possibly understand what it's like to be in your position, only they're on the other side of the war.

I generally see Soundwave as pretty reserved with a bit of dry snark here and there, while Jazz is definitely more outgoing and talkative but even less predictable. On the surface Soundwave is measured, Jazz is paradoxical, yet both are ten steps ahead of everyone else (and always keep some contingencies in their subspace.)

You can create stories where these seemingly polar opposites actually find some understanding and get along rather well. But you could also go full angst and make it so they feel they are unable to trust others and properly exist in peacetimes, so they end up being in each other's lives out of convenience-- because at least then they won't be alone. You can make it so they briefly crossed paths pre-war! Or maybe you'd like to see them try to one-up each other like rivals.

Something else I can appreciate due to their lines of work-- the fact that over time they're able to see all sorts of sides to their leaders, making them more disillusioned than some of the other hardcore fanatics/loyal soldiers. Like they still care about their respective causes, but they don't view Megatron or Optimus as perfect. Meaning they're more than happy to bend a few rules to do whatever they personally want to do-- stuff whatever the leader says.

I'll sum up cuz this is getting super long (sorry!) but literally the characterizations are wildly different, so you can create all kinds of arrangements. In my mind there's a basic structure, but beyond that anyone could take it from there lol!

Also! We can't forget... music. Personally I like to imagine they have very different tastes but are able to find appreciation in many musical expressions. Jazz definitely plays an instrument or five, and I am kind of torn on whether Soundwave might. He definitely would have the discipline for it, but perhaps his playing style is stilted? Or maybe he's excellent, and shockingly good at improvising to mix things up! Or maybe actually he doesn't like music much at all. And honestly however you interpret music in their relationship is likely to be a metaphor for the relationship itself...

TLDR: I love seeing them flirt like in those classic spy movies where the main concern was to have some thrill while solving an investigation/finishing a mission, and to look cool and get some while doing it. 😂

Happy Wicked Fanart Friday 💚💖💚💖 I just saw “Wicked: Part One” in theaters and oh, my gosh, the movie is such a work of art! A new modern classic that is beautifully executed and it is a beautiful tribute to both the hit broadway musical and the classic “Wizard of Oz” film from 1939! 👏👏🤩🤩

I cried and cried…😭😭😭 I can’t wait to see Part Two next year!! Both these fabulous ladies, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, performed beautifully as both Elphaba and Glinda respectively! 💖💯💚 I give this film a 10 out of 10 because this film is an amazing musical experience and kudos to everyone who made this movie especially the director, Jon M. Chu!

The Classic You’ve Heard Of But Somehow Haven’t Read Yet: Civil Twilight by eye_of_a_cat

What you need to know going in:

Written for HW's Day 5, "Family," this fic is yet another canonverse masterpiece from Cat, seeing Galadriel reuniting with Celeborn after S1—and a desperate, angst-filled, steamy reunion with Sauron first. 👀 When Gal finds Celeborn again, he’s changed so much since they last saw each other… and, of course, so has she—most notably, being with Sauron’s child. What’s remarkable about this story is the characterization of Gal, Sauron AND Celeborn; I can honestly say that despite being ten thousand percent IN on Sauron and Gal (and trust me, this fic delivers everything about them in spades), I cheered so hard for Celeborn in this. The dynamic between him and Gal was just as spectacular as the undeniable spark between Gal and Sauron. Instant classic, indeed.

Still shaking myself after reading this fic. 🔥 This AU sees a young Galadriel in a very rural Maine in the 1870s, helping her family run a general store. It’s there that she first meets (and catches the eye of) Halbrand, a rough, quiet logger. After their first meeting, he returns annually… and the mounting, roiling tension between the two of them is absolutely exquisite; it builds like the clawing cold of winter in your chest, that first bite of bitter chill that burns. In this case, in an excellent way. I don’t want to say too much more, so just trust me and read it! 👌

The Complete But Never Forgotten Masterpiece: now dark, now glittering by @mortaltempless

What you need to know going in:

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of @mortaltempless’ work; I’ve highlighted their work many times here, but this HW fic really hit me; it soothes. In it, Sauron struggles to understand Galadriel as she struggles with waxing and waning depression throughout the Ages they spend ruling together—but tries, genuinely, to help her. This fic works like a balm to the soul for it’s simple beauty and stalwart love in the face of sadness; of longing. It feels very Tolkien in that way, and for it’s emphasis on the healing power of nature. 😍 Be ready to bookmark, because this is one you’ll want to regularly return to for the sheer romance.

The WIP That Will Wreck You (In the Best Way): one thing i can’t get enough of ~and~ on begged and borrowed time by @bad-surprise

What you need to know going in:

Am I cheating by mentioning two of @bad-surprise's WIPs? No, because these are my recs and I do what I want. 😆 Keeping it 💯, I honestly couldn’t choose; they’re just both that good! The first, one thing i can’t get enough of, is the Dirty Dancing AU, featuring a mean-ish Halbrand in the role of Johnny and, of course, Gal as Baby. Do I need to say much more aside from these two and the words dirty dancing? 🔥🔥🔥 Better than the movie and it’s not even complete. ☺️ Fic 2, on begged and borrowed time, is another massively compelling AU; in this, we see Galadriel as a gifted tarot reader with a desperate desire to bring her husband, Celeborn, back from the dead… desperate enough to strike a bargain with the Necromancer and her former lover, Halbrand. 👀 Like I said—impossible to pick between these two, because they’re both terrific as hell, and they’re just getting started.

The Can't Stop Consuming No Matter What Time It Is Fic: once, i belonged to you (but twice i was free) by @nocaptainonthisship

What you need to know going in:

The dove is very dead in this fic, so fair warning, but it was absolutely one I could not stop consuming (and yes, it’s complete). A dark, delightfully twisted take on a fairytale, Galadriel is a princess locked in a tower with only a brush of memories from a former life, and three regular visitors, each of which have their own… appetites: Halbrand, her captor; Sauron, her besotted beast; and Mairon, her supposed savior. 🥺 Grim and gripping and utterly bewitching, this story is nothing short of striking in its intensity.

We Are - Ep 1-3

What I liked:

it's such a classic 🤡 Engineering faculty, their clothes, college vibe, engineering students v. art students - classic and nostalgia in one

lots of classic tropes

the characters as students and young people are very natural, the conversations are casual, it is shown how they study, party, work, have a deadlines, have close friendships, their own groups of friends. Actually, I enjoyed scenes from their ordinary lives, not related to romance, just... slice of life. For example, Peem and Q's relationship is 👌

Tan is absolutely DELIGHTFUL. I have never been a big fan of this actor, but as is often the case, all he needed was the right role in which he had a chance to shine. Aou as Tan dominates every scene and is naturally funny. His "oooooiiiiiiiiiiii" makes me smile every time 😁

not only Aou was better in this series, I also like Winny more here than in MSP

I really like Pond and Phuwin, so I'm glad to see them again

What I don't like:

*siiiigh* being someone's "slave" as a motive for revenge… *massages temples*, it's such a stupid, old, tiring and cringe trope and it doesn't fit this series at all, besides, really, it's 2024, let it die already

I really like Pond and Phuwin, and having said that, it drives me crazy for them to have ANOTHER series where AGAIN one of them plays a toxic asshole. And I mean a real asshole, not a charming bad boy. In FUTS Pond played a dick, in NLMG Phuwin played such a character, and now Pond is a dick again. It's true that his Phum apologized at the end of episode 3, so maybe there is a chance for improvement, but I don't know, there is some kind of curse hanging over this pairing. I wholeheartedly wish them a good series and a good script in which both of them are kind, equal and neither of them exploits, gaslights, or even abuses the other and all this under the guise of "love" 😬

(unfavorable hairstyle Pond, come on, neither the color nor the style suits him, and he is such a pretty boy!!)

Anyway, I liked the first 3 episodes, Tan is the best, and I'm very happy to see Phuwin again, whose character I can fully enjoy again, like in FUTS 😚
