there’s a lot of posts on how white suburbs are deeply awful + filled w ppl unable to conceptualize a world outside their own bubble + steeped in racism etc. which obviously is true and all but as someone who’s personally seen many suburbs filled w/ diff ethnic groups (not functionally diverse suburbs just for example suburb 1 filled entirely w chinese immigrants, 2 filled w only pakistanis, etc) the overall results aren’t much better. like at the end of the day the issue lies not in the whiteness of suburban residents but rather the way their lifestyles (car dependancy -> can’t go anywhere else/see other ppl, have never sat on the bus and seen regular ppl etc) allow them to genuinely live their entire lives in an extremely minuscule bubble of homogenous ppl who look & live (esp economically!!!) exactly like them

Dc x Dp Prompt #20: Wishes of a Secret Romantic
Jason doesn’t really advertise it but he’s a romantic at heart. He craves having his own cliche romance with someone who will actually care about him. Sometimes he indulges in his fantasies by reading romance novels or setting up at-home dinner dates that he takes himself on. He often finds himself sighing and wishing he had someone to relate to, that would give him unconditional care and enjoy going on romantic dates with him.
~~~
Desiree doesn’t quite know how she ended up supervising this beautiful mess but she’s not complaining. If anything she has some sweet gossip to share at girls night and a story for Ghost Writer to obsess over.
~~~ It starts like this:
Ever since Frostbite had taken to teaching the young ghost boy lessons on the Realms Culture and Ghost Biology he’d made great strides in his diplomatic and medical skills. His fighting skills were already impressive but were refined under the tutelage of the warriors of Far Frozen. Personally, she thinks he is grooming the Boy to join the Council of Ancients which have taken a more active role in governance now that Pariah has been defeated for a second time.
The boy has been going around and creating treaties with his enemies in which he finds them another outlet for their obsessions. He has already worked out deals with the likes of Technus, Amorpho, and oddly enough a joint deal between Penelope Spectra and Walker.
Technus was allowed to indulge in his technological creation so long as he was supervised by the Pharoah boy or doing on of the preapproved tasks of mischief, such as causing mild inconvenience to the bastards in white.
He had set up Amorpho with a “Cosplay TikTok” on which he was able to show off his different forms and get recognition for them. He’d amassed a large following thespians and costume artists who greatly admired him.
Due to his position on the Council, the Boy managed to get Spectra and Walker to agree to take part in the new justice system the Council had been setting up. Walker could run his prison so long as he abided by the rules and scentence lengths set by the Council. And Spectra was free to torment those whom the council deemed the worthy of the worst punishments. Many ghosts had grievances against living and non-living menaces, last she heard, there was a whole list for Spectra to go down. Currently, she was in another universe tormenting a man named Eobard Thawne, who went by a ridiculous name called the Reverse Flash. Once she had her fill of torment, they would be taken to Walker’s prison.
The Ghostling continued to do this with many of his former adversaries until he came knocking at the door to her lair. She was well aware of what the GhostBoy would want, and was curious as to what he could offer her.
She granted him the grace of her presence and was charmed by his earnest nature. He genuinely wanted to know her story and obsessions so that he could find the best way to help her. She revealed to him it was not Desire as many people assumed but Fulfillment. She wanted to people to attain their desires in place of how she had been unable too. But there are consequences to wish granting so there’s only so much the Boy could do.
The ghostling had been unbelievable smug when he wished that her wishes wouldn’t have catastrophically negative outcomes. When she granted and skeptically tested this wish she found it had worked. The boy grew even more smug.
Of course balance had to be maintained so her power became not weaker per say, just more indirect. During their trial run, Desiree was granting the wish young boy had wished for a large cookie. Instead of instantly summoning a 50 foot tall cookie as she would have previously done, she simply caused his mother to have the desire to bake cookies and then had two of them fuse together in the oven creating one larger cookie.
A bit more round about than she prefers but it got the job done.
The two brokered a deal that would allow Desiree to travel into the mortal realm and grant the wishes she desired to, so long as the wouldn’t cause catastrophically negative outcomes in the future. Young Phantom had even gone as far as to direct her to the so-called Make-A-Wish foundation in which she could find many deserving children to fulfill the wishes of.
~~~
One night Desiree had been flying through the mortal realm to visit a friend, a city spirit she hadn’t seen in ages. As she flew over the city a strong sense of longing and desire resonated with her core. Where there was desire there was someone with a wish. Invisible, she flew down to the source of these feelings to investigate.
She ended up out side the window of a building that held longer traces of death and her friend’s magic. She peered through to see a young man putting the finishing touches on a lavish dinner. She observed as he created a beautiful meal with an air of melancholy before pouring himself a glass of wine and turning on his television to watch mediocre romantic comedies. Intrigued by this young man, Desiree decided to lurk and observe for a while, perhaps he would soon reveal the wish his heart yearned for?
-
Jason sighed into his Osso Bucco as another romantic comedy began to play. Man he really was bumming himself out wasn’t he. He shook his head and took a sip of his wine. He winced slightly as some cringey kids’ movie called How to Build A Better Boy appeared on screen. How had that even gotten in his queue? However, his laziness won out and he made no move to change it, resigning himself to a hour and a half or so of second-hand embarrassment and semi-decent acting.
As he watched the best friend girl make a virtual boyfriend based on her friend, the main girl’s, preferences and huffed to himself. Oh if only things could be that easy. He hummed to himself adding on his own thoughts to the teen girl’s rambling list.
“ If only, sister. I’d wish for a sensitive and sweet guy too. Someone who wouldn’t mind death jokes, or my odd hours. Someone who I could just relax and nerd out with. Someone who’d go on romantic dates with me so I wouldn’t have to sit here eating this nice dinner on my own. Yeah, I’d wish for my perfect guy too.”
Suddenly, a chill washed over Jason and his hair stood on edge. He whipped his head around in search for an intruder only to see nothing there. He scanned the apartment suspiciously before his eyes landed on an open window. He sighed, reassured it was just a draft and turned back to the movie.
~
Desiree was touched by the earnest desires of the young man who was touched by both death and her friend’s magic. It almost reminded her of her own desires for romance while she was still living. Perhaps she would stick around to see how this wish played out for the young man~?
~
Miles away, something sparked in Danny Fenton, helping him make his final decision on which of the colleges that accepted him he should attend.
Propaganda
Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam, Barsaat Ki Raat, Mr. & Mrs. '55)—The Venus of India; heart-throb of all who saw her; responsible for the sexual awakening of every single desi lesbian I know (including me!) And my god, she is breathtakingly beautiful. Look at the subtle grace with which she moves, and that smile - the kind of radiant smile that can make you laugh with sheer delight, or cry because of its hidden pain. Those wild curls! That Cupid's bow! The way she tilts back her head and smiles at you with mischief dancing in her eyes! She has a way of looking at the camera that makes you feel she's sharing a private joke just with you; it's something about that quizzical twist of the lips and eyebrows. As an actress, she is inimitable; she seems to effortlessly inhabit roles ranging from a heart-broken courtesan to a laughter-loving socialite. Fun fact : she's had quite the fan following in Greece! Stelios Kazantidis even wrote a song as a tribute to her.
Ingrid Bergman (Gaslight, Casablanca, Notorious)—Where do I even begin with Ingrid Bergman? I fell in love with her with her astounding performance in the 1956 version of Anastasia -- the best Anastasia movie in large part due to her wonderful and touching performance. She's got this amazing, fascinating intensity to her in whatever role she's in. She commits 100%, and she's got this light in whatever she's in that's stunning. She's utterly convincing no matter what she plays, from an amnesiac possible lost princess, from a nun, from a woman taking her revenge on the town that wronged her, to light romantic comedy. She's never missed in any role I've seen her in! Also she became quite the MILF.
This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Madhubala:
Tumblr media
An icon of Bollywood, who was well known for her beauty and has continued to inspire performances and songs into the 21st century. She was at times described as "the number one beauty of the Indian screen" and "the biggest star in the world".
SHE IS EVERYTHING AHHH. JUST LOOK AT HER SMILE-
Tumblr media
She's been nicknamed the Marilyn Monroe of India and was one of the highest paid actresses in the Hindi film industry (the term Bollywood did not exist yet) during the 1950s. Also an extremely talented dancer and singer
Tumblr media
SHE'S JUST SO STUNNING, like seeing her eyes IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATES YOU, THE DANCING, THE BEAUTY!!!!!!!!! She worked in Bollywood for over 20 years and passed away at a sad early age of 36, BUT THE IMPACT SHE HAD WAS UNMATCHED!!!!!
Tumblr media
That sassy sideways glance she does always has me WEAK AT THE KNEES. And when she's making silly faces at the camera to mimic someone ahhhh my gay little heart <3
Tumblr media
Ingrid Bergman:
Tumblr media
God, she's fantastic. She's both beautiful and a compelling actor who's more than capable of putting the whole movie on her shoulders if necessary. It's worth noting that while her beauty is conventional, she was seen as refreshingly "natural" with more eyebrows and less makeup than many other leading ladies of the time. She's well known for her role in Casablanca, but in Notorious, Spellbound, (both available on archive.org ) and Gaslight (1944) she shows how immensely capable she is.
Tumblr media
I mean...she's Ingrid Bergman. I feel like that should be enough, you know? She's physically beautiful (her eyes!) but watching her is like a transcendent experience. Her voice, her expressions... beautiful woman, beautiful actor.
I'm a gay man but even I understand her appeal. I'll watch any movie she shows up in. Gorgeous woman.
Just try and watch her movies without sighing wistfully, then get back to me!
Tumblr media
Choosing 1-3 movies where Bergman was at her hottest was agony because, of course, she was always at her hottest. Not just because she was beautiful but because she was absolutely willing to go up against the bs women in Hollywood were constantly dealing with. When exiled from Hollywood for having an affair with Roberto Rossellini, not only did she refuse to apologize at any point, but she went on to say that Hollywood's films had grown stagnant and boring to her. Though she said she appreciated her time working there, she wanted to try new, different techniques (hence starring in Italian neorealist films, working on stage, and acting under directors like Ingmar Bergman). She was not afraid to chase after her artistic ideals and go outside the box regardless of what society had to say about it. From her first movie to her last she killed it. There's so much more to say about Bergman's career and life, but I've already written five million words so I'll stop at that.
ion words so I'll stop at that.
Tumblr media
One of the most incredible actors I've ever seen on film. Her facial expressions are so intricate and poignant that I cannot look away. I'm either ace or straight, but damn she made me question that.
Tumblr media
SEVEN TIME OSCAR NOMINEE QUEEN. Girl also PULLED, having affairs with famously hot men Gary Cooper and Gregory Peck IN ADDITION to her three marriages...sexy
Tumblr media
She has a very natural beauty to her, and she's from Sweden!
She left Hollywood and only became more beautiful. You could drown in her eyes. She can look innocent AND like she's seen it all. She is effortlessly elegant. She's played Joan of Arc (automatically hot) AND was in the movie that coined gaslight as a term. And where would we be without that!
Tumblr media
She was known for being a breath of fresh air on the movie scene at the time with her windswept hair, dreamy smile and soulful eyes. I have loved her in every movie I have seen her in - she was just magnetic!
Where do I even start. There's a neighborly quality to this beautiful, talented actress that makes her hotness one of a kind and her looks impossible to forget
Tumblr media
With a career spanning five decades, Bergman is often regarded as one of the most influential screen figures in cinematic history. Known for her naturally luminous beauty, Bergman spoke five languages – Swedish, English, German, Italian and French – and acted in each.
She's hot, don't get me wrong, but I've always found her very approachable, like she could easily be a member of my friend group
Tumblr media
A lot of the time hotness in a movie is just about words and framing. "You're the most beautiful person here" [vaseline lens] well I sure hope so because that's who you cast. But when, in Casablanca, they call Ingrid Bergman the most beautiful woman in the world... they were not fucking lying. And such a dynamite actor too!! I'd only seen Casablanca up until last year, and there she's confined to love interest. But in Gaslight she was maybe one of the most incredible actors I've ever seen!!!! Goddddd shes so fucking hot and cool.
Another thing that I have observed over the years is that, not a lot of people are good at relationships. As in they don't know the fundamentals of a good relationship. And with that it follows, that for some people this comes naturally. And for some people this is learned.
A lot of people don't seem to be good at communicating in relationships. Meaning that they will let a thing that bothered them fester until it grows into resentment. And they bring it up once the resentment is bubbling. And obviously, because it's pent up, when do they do bring it up, it's in an explosive manner.
So everyone at some point learns that relationships are about communication. And they tell you this wisdom. But no one actually gives you the details and the formula
Communication is about
1) frequency. So don't let this fester. Bring it up right away
2) type of communication. So positive and the negative. Ie., things that are working but also not working. The positive communication will be, "oh I loved [action], because [what it made you feel]. You are so [the unique attribute about your partner that led to this behaviour]". This is what is going to build connection regularly. Regularly appreciating your partner. And not just in a generic manner. But in an instance specific manner.
Or in the negative "when the [situation/issue], it makes me [feeling], and if this continues to happen i will [feel/consequences]". It doesn't attack the partner and views them an opportunity to rise to meet your needs. And focuses instead on the situation / issue and the effect on you. This is what will maintain the relationship. Prevent it from going down.
3) manner of communication. You should never say "you always do this" "you never do this". That is not an productive way of conveying concern to your partner. That is just attacking them as mentioned in point #2. The person who is being addressed also should listen and not get defensive or criticism. If one person has legitimately brought up a concern, and the other person says "no i don't do that " or "it's not that big of a deal" or "well you did this [unrelated other thing so long ago]", this is a cause for concern. Men often do the latter and imo it's a red flag. A man should be able to listen to your concerns and not feel attacked if you have brought it up in a gentle let's tag-team this issue manner. If a man does get defensive or start criticizing you instead, he has an ego or insecurity problem. Thats one of the things that will chip away at a relationship. Is defensiveness and criticism.
There's other things that maintain relationships like taking interest in your partners interest, when they ask you to look at something or share something with you - then you should take interest. There's many people who might ignore it or outright dismiss it (chips away) or some might simply acknowledge it (maintains), where are some might take an interest and ask you questions on the thing youve shared. Ask you where you learned about it. What you found interesting about it. How it made you feel etc (builds relationships).
Some years ago I wrote a post, which I can't find now. But I found it so surprising in couples that I had observed that a man would so often dismiss his partners attempt to connect. I remember the instance I noticed this - I was at a desi Eid bazaar. And a woman came to her husband who was sitting with their child, giddily told him that she had haggled the price of a cloth down by 20 dollars. And instead of being proud of her and appreciating her, he said something along the lines of "you could have gotten it for 30 off". And I saw the joy disappear from her face. And he chipped away willingly. So bewildering to me that you have an opportunity to connect and build, so easily handed to you - and in so many couples, they reject it. It's like someone offering you a couple of dollars for free in a long-term investment, and you're like - nah thanks I'm good. Maddening!
A/N: I haven't been able to write anything for a while so instead of making actual progress on a WIP, I spent way too many hours formatting this for AO3 to justify having only written dialogue. So if you want to get the full experience, I recommend checking it out here. Made a creator skin and everything.
Masterlist
You 12:47 A.M. : Desi’s new friends are EXACTLY like Chris’ friends used to be, it’s almost disturbing
Sy 12:53 A.M. : Ain’t that a good thing? I thought ya missed the metalheads after the breakup.
You 12:54 A.M. : I did. It’s just so out of character for Desi, you know? Her new BF is so different from others before
Sy 12:55 A.M. : But yeah, when me and L left your place I joked that it felt like Desi was sitting between you and your boyfriend rather than her sitting next to her own BF. So weird to see her with an emo kid instead of a suit.
You 12:56 A.M. : I’m headed home
You 12:57 A.M. : It’s about an hour
Sy 12:57 A.M. : RIP
Sy 12:58 A.M. : Didja take your sleep aids so you can just go to bed when you get home?
You 12:58 A.M. : Not yet
You 12:58 A.M. : Don’t want to risk having a dizzy spell on my solo walk home
Sy 12:59 A.M. : Fair.
You 12:59 A.M. : I’m pretty far from home so I’m being a little more safety minded
Sy 1:00 A.M. : Good. We just finished up a bit of cardio so now I’m wide awake and L is passed out 🤣
You 1:00 A.M. : Funny, it’s usually the other way around
Sy 1:01 A.M. : It’s the clean up afterwards that always wakes me up.
Sy 1:02 A.M. : I can doom scroll a bit and keep ya company if ya want.
You 1:03 A.M. : I wouldn’t mind a witness to my survival
You 1:04 A.M. : Right now I’m sitting in the first subway car behind the driver but as I walk I may call you
Sy 1:05 A.M. : Sure thing.
You 1:06 A.M. : Anyway, the guys were nice but loud as fuck
You 1:06 A.M. : Very into screaming along with the music
Sy 1:07 A.M. : Oh boy. How was Desi handling it?
You 1:07 A.M. : Well actually
You 1:08 A.M. : Even when her BF’s band showed up and things got extra loud
Sy 1:09 A.M. : You know, I was a little bummed I missed the night out with you guys when ya texted me earlier.
Sy 1:09 A.M. : Doesn’t sound like something I would have enjoyed after all lol
You 1:10 A.M. : Not at all. You like good music but not at that volume
You 1:12 A.M. : I wasn’t supposed to go but Leon said I was welcome as he left and Desi confessed that she had never met most of the people that were there and that she would appreciate a familiar face so I went with her after supper
Sy 1:13 A.M. : That’s nice
You 1:14 A.M. : But it was loud enough that my throat is a little raw now. I was honestly concerned that someone would call the cops
Sy 1:16 A.M. : Maybe with enough alcohol I would have been able to have fun lol
You 1:16 A.M. : I was the only sober person. The others had either had copious amounts of alcohol or copious amounts of weed
Sy 1:17 A.M. : It’s better you be sober for the return trip anyway.
You 1:18 A.M. : Leon and his back up vocalist were singing Bohemian Rhapsody at one point and Leon was chugging beer to rehydrate between the different parts 🤣
Sy 1:19 A.M. : Isn’t that how the professionals do it? 😅
You 1:20 A.M. : Only the ones in need of weekly meetings in church basements
Sy 1:21 A.M. : To be fair, the fact that he was able to both remember and sing the lyrics while drunk and high is impressive.
You 1:22 A.M. : Gotta give credit where credit is due, I guess 🤷‍♀️
You 1:23 A.M. : Getting off at the next stop
Sy 1:24 A.M. : Alright.
Sy 1:24 A.M. : Then you catch a bus?
You 1:25 A.M. : No, it’s a 15 minute walk
You 1:26 A.M. : Out of the station and walking
Sy 1:27 A.M. : Call whenever.
I wait until I’m across the street from the station to lift my phone to my ear. It only rings once before the call connects and I hear Sy’s deep voice.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
I hop down from the sidewalk onto the street to pass a man walking ahead of me. Why do people insist on moving at a crawl dead center in the middle of the sidewalk I will never understand.
“Didja have fun tonight?”
“Surprisingly, yes but not as much as you, I bet.”
Sy chuckles on the other end of the line. “Matter of perspective.”
“How was your family dinner?”
“Painful. Except for the dog. It was nice to have her around again.”
Sy’s apartment doesn’t allow pets other than for short visits so he wasn’t able to get his own dog after leaving his mother’s. Frankly, the dog is probably the main reason he didn’t move out sooner. He held out way longer than I would have. He’s also a good southern boy and doesn’t ever talk back, unlike me. I’ve got a mouth on me and I ain’t afraid to use it to tell people where they can shove it.
“What about you? Anything interestin’ happen after I left?”
“Not really, we mostly got caught up on our girl talk. Leon left around five to get to his mother’s day dinner. Desi and I left my place around eight. We ate at the little burger place on the corner then got to Leon’s a little before ten.”
I walk past the restaurant in question as I speak.
“Did it start rainin’ out?”
“More like lightly drizzling.”
“Are you still only wearin’ your shorts and crop top?”
I know he’s mostly asking out of worry that I’m going to get cold but I have no doubt there’s also a little part of him that’s worried my outfit from earlier would attract unwanted attention.
“I changed into jeans before leaving since I knew the walk home would be chilly and I put my giant hoodie on for the trip home.”
It’s a triple XL zip front I got from my old job. I found a bunch of old seasonal shirts when cleaning out the store room and my boss had let me take my pick of the leftovers before donating the rest. There had been one hoodie at the very bottom that had likely remained unclaimed because of the size. You could fit three of me in it at the same time but it’s comfortable and right now, it’s a small protection against potential unwanted attention.
“I’ve only seen, like, three people on the street and the road is well lit but, you know…”
“Better safe than sorry. I don’t mind darlin’.”
I can tell he’s getting tired since it’s about three hours past his normal bedtime. I’ve never been particularly worried about walking home alone at night. Hell, I’ve wandered around strange cities in the middle of the night to sober up in the hopes of avoiding a nasty hangover. Just the other day the girls I work with were saying how they don’t like taking the subway at night because they had too many bad experiences with being catcalled or with other passengers making them uncomfortable.
Me? Well, I’ve never been catcalled and men don’t normally look twice at me. I guess my above average height and my resting bitch face have made me overly confident. Or I’m just proof that women don’t come out of the womb feeling the need to clutch their keys in their fist at night unless men have done something to make them feel unsafe.
“At least I remembered to charge my phone before leaving.”
“Thank fuck for that.”
I wasn’t expecting Sy to actually be awake when I texted so the phone battery was more to make sure I knew when the last subway was and to call a cab in case I missed it.
“So are you camping out on the couch while we talk?”
L is surprisingly cool with our friendship but I’m pretty sure being woken up by your boyfriend talking on the phone with another woman in the middle of the night is a no-go for even the most laidback of girlfriends.
“Yeah. I got up for some water so I figured I’d just stay out here and avoid wakin’ L.”
“How dirty did you get her that the clean up pulled you out of the post nut drowsiness? You start dabbling in watersports or something?”
“Fuck off, there were no water sports involved.” Sy releases an audible yawn. “I didn’t think I’d miss condoms but they sure as hell made cleanup faster. By the time we both finish up in the bathroom I’m always wide awake.”
I hum in understanding. L is Sy’s first long-term girlfriend and they just recently dropped the latex after L got on birth control. “Do you have to get up to do that?”
“What, ya want us to just roll over and go to sleep? I already sweat my balls off at night, I don’t need to add wet spots into the mix.”
“You could keep baby wipes by the bed for late night cardio sessions. Avoid having to get up and go to the bathroom. Or bring a wet rag in with you beforehand.”
“That’s… not a bad idea actually.”
I pull my bag off my shoulder as I wait for the light to change. Might as well dig my keys out since I’m almost home. “Yeah, I’m full of good sex advice.”
“I knew I kept ya around for a reason.”
I smile to myself. We both know that we wouldn’t have made it to ten years of friendship if all I had to offer was sex advice.
“I’m about to turn onto my street. I feel like the walk was shorter than usual.”
“Well, you’re breathin’ kinda heavy. You must’ve been walkin’ faster.”
He’s not wrong. I must be really out of shape if I can’t walk and talk without getting winded. Holding my phone between my cheek and my shoulder, I put my key in the lock and pull the door open.
I don’t remember what time it is until the door slams shut behind me. Oops.
“I’m safely behind a locked door. You are relieved from your babysitting duties.”
I linger in the entrance for a few seconds since the call would probably cut off if I stepped into the elevator.
“I’m up for babysittin’ whenever ya need it. Glad you’re home safe. G’night.”
“Good night.”
Indian BL? FROM 2017????
There's an Indian BL from 2017 that I just watched. And I have incoherent thoughts
Before I continue, massive thanks to my bestie @anixknowsnothin for telling me about this show and proofreading the post for me. You don't even watch bl so I have no idea how you found this, but I'm incredibly grateful nonetheless
Here's the link to where I watched the show from, there's a glitch in the first episode subs where the subs seem to be from another show entirely, but it's only for the first ep and about 50% of the dialogue is in English anyways, so it shouldn't be hard to follow.(My ask box is also always open if there's a specific dialogue/scene in Hindi that you want the translation of)
Edit: The link seems to be region locked, so to watch it you can use a vpn and set your region to India, otherwise the episodes are available on youtube, albeit without subs
Note:- this post is going to have a few mild spoilers throughout, but I'll flag major spoilers in red
It's no secret that India is fairly behind when it comes to queer love shows if we compare it to other Asian countries. While it has a handful of great queer shows and movies, it's still quite a small quantity. Additionally, before this, I'd never watched an Indian show that felt like I was watching a bl (if you have recs, please send them my way!!). I'm not going to get into the technicalities of what feels like a bl and doesn't, because honestly, I'm not completely sure myself. For now, I'm just going based off of vibes and feelings, and this show felt like a bl through and through.
Titled 'Romil and Jugal' after its main characters, the story is a modern, desi, bl remake of the classic story...
Romeo and Juliet
Well, Bad Buddy was the first Thai bl I ever watched, so Romil and Jugal being the first Indian BL I watched just feels right, no?
I didn't actually know that the story was based off of Romeo and Juliet till the second episode, because I didn't bother looking for a synopsis, and jumped right in. However, it's links to Romeo and Juliet quickly became apparent, around the same time I started to see similarities between this show and Bad Buddy. I also did not know that this show came out in 2017 before I googled it, having already watched the entire thing, which was a pretty huge shock, because this BL is progressive by 2024 India standards.
Alright, enough of my rambling. Here's a synopsis of the show in case you haven't heard of it. (I couldn't find an official one, so I did my best to write a spoiler free synopsis)
Ramya happens to start talking to a slightly older woman at an airport, who believes that there is no romance in the younger generation. To prove her wrong, Ramya decides to tell the older woman her brother's love story. The story from the past is shown to us as Ramya narrates it to the woman in the present. Jugal is a closeted 19-year-old who lives with his parents. One day, a family moves into the house next door, and Jugal immediately falls for the son, Romil. The two of them attend the same college, and eventually become friends. The two of them eventually get together, but have to face the challenges of a homophobic society and having parents that hate each other.
I was a little skeptical of the show going in, but the show surpassed all of my expectations in the best way possible. It's no masterpiece, and it has its flaws, but it was far better than what I expected. It had both comical elements and darker themes, and it did not shy away from exploring the darker themes at all. Oh, and it has a few musical numbers. What did you expect? This is India after all.
The show is 10 episodes long, with 20 minutes per episode, and so it does unfortunately fall into some of the pitfalls that shorter shows tend to fall into, namely underdeveloped relationships and rushed endings. I did end up feeling a little bit like it didn't make sense for the pair to sacrifice and suffer as much as they did because they hadn't known each other for very long, and I felt like they should have been given more time to fall in love with each other. But it also could be argued that the show stays true to the play, and Romil and Jugal are dumb teenagers who make mistakes and stick with each other through them. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it.
One thing that I loved the show for was that it showed us that the relationship is not all sunshine and rainbows. They argue, they break up, they get back together, and they do argue even after that. But every time, they eventually work through the issue and reconcile. The show even depicts Romil dealing with internalized homophobia and struggling to reconcile with the fact that he will never be who his family wants him to be. Although I do wish they'd have had more time to explore this, I'd say it was decently depicted and handled. The show really delves into how children are forced to uphold their family's wishes and are constantly put under pressure to make them proud. Although it clearly affects both of them, it's more obvious with Romil, who is expected by his family to date and marry the daughter of his father's boss, whom they think he is dating. There's a metaphor along this theme too, where Romil pretends to like the mango shake that his mom has been making for him since he was a kid, even though he hates it, and when he tries to tell her, he has to act like it was a joke to spare her feelings. The show also goes into the communal mindset of basing your actions off "what will people think?", and you can see how a lot of the characters' actions throughout the show are haunted by this question. Some of Romil and Jugal's earlier disagreements are due to this very mindset.
The show also very candidly depicts the extreme homophobia of society in India. Romil and Jugal had to constantly hide who they were, always having to keep up a mask and I felt that reach somewhere deep inside me. When the pair come out, the show really shows how ugly homophobia can be in India. Their parents immediately disown them. They're mocked in college and wrongfully suspended for a fight that was provoked by other students. Very, very few people stand with them, and the pair very quickly realize that now that they are out, they simply cannot live in the city anymore. So with the help of Jugal's best friend and her mother, they flee to Mumbai, where they get jobs and live as paying guests with a friend of the aforementioned mother. But, even in Mumbai, the masks stay up. They have to act like cousins, for fear of being persecuted. The series depicted the worst-case scenario that so many of us live in fear of, so watching it was something of a cathartic experience for me.
Another thing that the show did quite well is showing how different people and their mindsets can be. Jugal's best friend, Ahalya, and her mom are very supportive, and they help the pair out quite a bit. Ahalya's mother provided a safe house for the pair and helped them find a fresh start. Meanwhile, Romil and Jugal's parents are incredibly homophobic. There was a scene that really stuck with me, (mild spoiler ahead, skip to the last sentence of the paragraph) where Ahalya's mother came across Jugal's mother, who prided herself on being educated and well-read, searching up how to cure homosexuality. Ahalya's mother then tells her off for calling herself educated yet believing that homosexuality is an illness. It is so important to me that the show depicted both the violent homophobia that permeates Indian society and the surprising, warm acceptance that one can find.
One final thing that I loved about this show so, so much is just how authentically Indian it feels. Asian cultures share a lot in common, but they also have their differences, so seeing a show where I can imagine encountering the characters in real life is really amazing. Rather than something big, it was little things sprinkled throughout the story that warmed my heart. The story felt like something I could hear the local aunties gossiping about. The way it depicts queerness in India hits incredibly close to home.
One thing I've learned watching Asian bls is that the ending of a show can make it or break it, but with this one, I'm stuck. The best way I can describe the ending is absolutely insane and incredibly Bollywood.
I believe this show was supposed to get a second season because the last two minutes of the show leave us with a massive cliffhanger. Now, it's been 7 years, so a second season is unlikely, so I'm simply pretending that the last two minutes of the show never happened. But the ending has so much more to it than just this (Major spoilers for the ending up ahead. I mean it when I say major, this is like going into Bad Buddy knowing that they're going to trick their parents in the end).
About halfway through the show, I remembered what play it was based upon and realized that there was a very real possibility that Romil and Jugal would die. The first half of the last episode leads up to this, telling us that they died when reconciling after an argument in the middle of the road when they were hit by a truck. We get a super emotional scene (yes, I cried) where the two families somewhat reconcile in their grief as they go to the police station to identify the bodies. Except... they're not dead, which is revealed when Romil's father hugs Romil's (not) dead body. They reveal that they planned this to show their family that they still loved their sons. I did say it was like PatPran tricking their parents in the end, didn't I? So the families reunite, Romil and Jugal get jobs in New Zealand and get married, and return to India for a wedding celebration (yes, I cried. again). The ending does feel slightly rushed, but if I'm being honest, it wasn't as terrible as it could have been. Believing that your child is dead for a bit is a somewhat justifiable reason for a sudden change of heart. There's a part where Romil and Jugal tell their parents that if they choose acceptance, they can reconcile, but if they choose to remain prejudiced, Romil and Jugal can simply get back on the stretchers, because they'll be as good as dead to their families anyways and it is *chef's kiss*.
All in all, the show was surprisingly heartfelt and poignant. It had me laughing, kicking my feet and even crying. There's a lot more about this show that I could talk about, but I'm going to stop here for now, and I'll try to write more on it later. This show really does deserve more recognition than it has, and I'm almost mad at myself for not knowing about it before. Am I being really biased when talking about this show? Absolutely. But I do think that this show is a worthwhile watch, and I'd really like to see what other people on here think of the show, especially because I'm aware that I am biased towards this show.
I'm tagging a few people who I know might be interested/have some thoughts about the show because this is a show that I really want to hear other people's opinions on and have conversations about, so I hope you guys don't mind!
After n number of meetings, and sunday nights at the office even, my project has finally ended and it was glorious. Took a day off today, things are suddenly so quiet, it feels like I've come out on the other end.
Though of course, like everything. This too will pass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the meantime, I've been trying to at least keep up the habit of studying.
But I've realised that endurance is overrated. It can push you through the last mile but ultimately it all comes down to whether you find intrinsic joy in what you do.
At this point I'm happy to simply get into my zone and focus on things I enjoy. That's all that matters I guess.
hi! just discovered your page, you art is gorgeous. just a question though! why do you draw the characters the way you do?
i might just be forgetful and don’t remember the descriptions of them in the book..but i was curious! much love. i love the art tons.
Hi 👋🏾 thanks for the love
Yeah there’s not a lot of description on the characters and their physical appearance so that’s just a fun place to take liberties! Tbh I use to draw the Gatsby gang just like the Baz 2013 versions but then when I was redesigning them for fun I asked myself how I thought they might look from my imagination. Lots of tweaking and changes of each character over the course of 3ish years and these are the designs I came up with.
Gatsby being Lebanese was playfully suggested by my best friend who’s also part Lebanese and I have 2 Desi friends so he kinda took form that way. Ppl often speculate that he’s mixed and white passing and I dunno, why not just make him actually dark skin for once and play with that concept? Plus him being mixed race plays a lot into the timeline with immigration in the 20s in my story as well as his mental psyche
Jordan is Afrolatine. At first I just had her Black like me but wanted to make her Latine as well for reasons.
Daisy and Nick I pinned down from old Hollywood stars for funsies. Daisy being a Clara Bow IT girl knock off and Nick being a Gregory Peck nod. Daisy was pretty skinny (Gatsby too) at first but I dunno, I just got tired of every body type lookin the same and figured yeah why not make them chubby and muscular in some areas? Nick I added scars to recently, actually, cause him leaving the battlefield with nothing?? Didn’t feel right to me. A physical and mental scar haunts him now. I also made them both Irish cause again, why not pin down lineage and play with that in a very lineage centric time in America?
Tom probably remains the closest to the 2013 Baz characters. I just really see him as a big buff southern Louisiana man with a preacher’s commanding speech pattern. And that’s partly why I made him a politician! He’s a nod to another old Hollywood star, Clark Gable.
And Meyer is literally Giancarlo Esposito haha! But yeah I also made him Black and Jewish to see how that identity could be played with and portrayed
My retelling has A LOT to do with outside perception and inner struggle/ideas of identity so their background and race and lineage is a big part of the story.
3.159 About that thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Life has been lifing, so I didn't get around to doing tummy time with Desiree until today. After my much needed trip to Sixam with Sophia, and a shower, I grab Desi and get to work. When we bought this house, I recognized it was a bit cramped, although much bigger than our last residence. We were content with that because it was the best we could afford. Besides, I think that's just the style of the homes in this area. But Desi is getting bigger now and will be mobile soon. She'll have very little space to crawl around safely. Alessia still hasn't decided what she's going to do yet, but I know she's gonna move; I can feel it. Maybe I'll start looking for a duplex like Dub's, just in case. Anyway, I take Desi into the hallway so I have enough room to get down on the floor with her and place her on her belly. This is a new experience, and though she's apprehensive at first, she has determination in her eyes and accepts the challenge. But that fire doesn't last long. When she realized all the muscles she needs to engage, and how weak she is, her face goes from, "bring it on," to, "wait what??"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I encourage her, saying she can do it. She may be weak now, but we'll practice every day until she's strong and zooming all over this place. I know she doesn't know what I'm saying to her, but I feel like she took the positive vibes and ran with them. She put away the tears and kept trying to hold her little head up until she got it! She looks over at me like, "am I doing it right??" I clap and cheer for her so she has no doubts how proud I am. Mama would be too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I watch her as she decides how she feels about this new position she's in, and she stays like that for about 20 minutes! She might not know it yet, but she is definitely ready to crawl. I feel it. After tummy time, she's tired and a little cranky, so I put her down for a nap. Sophia came up to check on her while I'm coaxing her to sleep. I tell her about the milestone she reached, and she was so proud of her little sweet potato. So proud, she picked her up and gave her a tight squeeze. (sigh) She'll never get that nap now, and I will pay sorely for this in the morning. But she totally earned the cuddle time. She's an amazing child. Our little miracle.
Tumblr media
That evening, I went for a jog with Rosie. When we got home, I walk in on Sophia being all geeked out because of another milestone Desi reached. She got her to take that nap, eventually. When she went back upstairs to check on her, she heard her babbling to herself before she entered the room. Naturally, she couldn't make out any words, but it was definitely the beginnings of simlish. Then, when she entered, Desi's eyes lit up like she hadn't seen her in days, and she blew her a kiss! I was so happy she got to experience that, especially since I'm with her the most. Still, I was high key jealous. I know it's impossible to catch every little thing, but I still want to see it all.
When she calmed down from the excitement, she invited me to sit with her for a serious chat. I thought maybe I was in trouble for hogging Desi and not giving her a chance to bond with her properly. Sophia has long since healed and rested from giving birth, but I guess I'm still in that mode of taking care of her and everything around the house. I just love being able to serve her and ensure she has no needs. But that wasn't what she wanted to discuss.
"Do you still want to adopt?" she asked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was not prepared for that question and felt like an idiot, sitting there with my mouth gaped like that. Another child was the furthest thing from my mind. I'm still trying to get the hang of having one child, let alone bring another into the chaos. But how did she feel? Why did she bring it up? If she's still wanting a big family, will I be okay with that? I have to tread lightly because this conversation could go in a million and six ways, and frankly, most of them would probably head south. I analyze her face, hoping to gauge how she feels, looking for signs of where she stands, but I'm clueless. Instead of giving her an answer I think she wants, I pivot and throw the question back at her. Even though Desi is probably the most easy-going infant there is, she admits to being on a steep learning curve on this parenting journey. It turns out she doesn't have a problem with me being with Desi all the time because she wants me to take the lead. Things haven't clicked for her as she expected, and she feels a little lost. Even though I hate she's not feeling confident as a mother, I'm relieved that my obsession with our daughter hasn't gotten in her way. But that isn't the challenge she's concerned about. Desi is still very young, and Sophia has many many more days to get her parenting wings. The mental wear and tear is the part making her gun shy. She has so many more things to think about now, and a thousand seventeen more to worry about. Most of the things that hem her up aren't even real and will probably never happen, but in her mind they're feel very real. I told her I agreed 3000% to everything she said, and that surprised her. She thought I had it all figured out since I'm so good with Desi, but I told her I'm just winging it like she is.
Tumblr media
Knowing we're in the same boat seems to comfort her, and she gets to the point. She can't see herself adding another child into the mix and wants to know if I'm okay with just one child, especially since we also have a niece and two nephews to consider. I admit my relief and remind her I'd always have her back and support her needs. If she would have said she was ready to adopt, I would have been okay with it and figured it out. But knowing she doesn't want more children is a weight off my shoulders, honestly. What's more a relief is her already knowing and accepting how much I want to be in my niblings' lives, even without saying anything to her; she knows me so well. It already feels like I have four children. Sophia and I wanted Desiree to have siblings to grow up with, and I feel awful about denying her them. But I honestly can't see a fifth child in our lives. I don't think my heart can take it.
Y'all don't understand how happy I am that the desi Harry Potter tag/headcanon exists (coming from a desi person).
//tbh you can stop here the rest is just yapping//
Like...I read the books when I was 11 years old, and then didn't touch them or the fandom 'til I was 20 and HOO BOY did so many things happen in that time period.
Not only did joann come out as a terf, but the drarry tag gained popularity. I read somewhere that she hated that ship, so that's why I started perusing the drarry tag in ao3 at 20 years old (half out of pettiness against her, half bc I was genuinely curious). And now I unironically ship it too lol.
So drarry eventually became something I enjoyed reading, but then I stumbled across the desi harry tag and 🥹🥹
I recognize the foods!!! The customs!!! The culture!!! But I especially love the fics where he feels some sort of detachment from it for one reason or another and the fic is an exploration of that feeling because as an American desi with Canadian parents (so the closest relation I have to "The home country" is my grandparents) I CAN RELATE
OK that's it that was the yap for today :D
Propaganda
Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam, Barsaat Ki Raat, Mr. & Mrs. '55)—The Venus of India; heart-throb of all who saw her; responsible for the sexual awakening of every single desi lesbian I know (including me!) And my god, she is breathtakingly beautiful. Look at the subtle grace with which she moves, and that smile - the kind of radiant smile that can make you laugh with sheer delight, or cry because of its hidden pain. Those wild curls! That Cupid's bow! The way she tilts back her head and smiles at you with mischief dancing in her eyes! She has a way of looking at the camera that makes you feel she's sharing a private joke just with you; it's something about that quizzical twist of the lips and eyebrows. As an actress, she is inimitable; she seems to effortlessly inhabit roles ranging from a heart-broken courtesan to a laughter-loving socialite. Fun fact : she's had quite the fan following in Greece! Stelios Kazantidis even wrote a song as a tribute to her.
Olivia de Havilland (Adventures of Robin Hood, Gone With the Wind, The Heiress)— The woman who took on the Studio System at the height of their power and Won! A double Oscar winner! Is magnetic and beautiful in everything she's in and gave us all the juicy scandal with her sibling rivalry with Joan Fontaine! Before the Oscar Slap was the Oscar sister snub! Also everything she wears in Robin Hood she makes beautiful even a purple green and orange monstrosity how does she do it! Anyway this scene is one of my old Hollywood favourites
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Madhubala:
Tumblr media
An icon of Bollywood, who was well known for her beauty and has continued to inspire performances and songs into the 21st century. She was at times described as "the number one beauty of the Indian screen" and "the biggest star in the world".
SHE IS EVERYTHING AHHH. JUST LOOK AT HER SMILE-
Tumblr media
She's been nicknamed the Marilyn Monroe of India and was one of the highest paid actresses in the Hindi film industry (the term Bollywood did not exist yet) during the 1950s. Also an extremely talented dancer and singer
Tumblr media
SHE'S JUST SO STUNNING, like seeing her eyes IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATES YOU, THE DANCING, THE BEAUTY!!!!!!!!! She worked in Bollywood for over 20 years and passed away at a sad early age of 36, BUT THE IMPACT SHE HAD WAS UNMATCHED!!!!!
Tumblr media
That sassy sideways glance she does always has me WEAK AT THE KNEES. And when she's making silly faces at the camera to mimic someone ahhhh my gay little heart <3
Tumblr media
Olivia de Havilland:
Tumblr media
She is just perfection. She has a smile that is looks like it is barely holding back, and yet so reserved as well.
Tumblr media
Broke the contract system and won freedoms for actors (the de Havilland Law is still in effect I believe). 2 time Oscar winner. Beautiful and smart
Tumblr media
She legally challenged the movie studios' unfair contracts and won, setting a precedent for other actors to be treated more fairly. This was at great cost to her financially and essentially getting her blacklisted for years but the resulting judicial opinion is still known as the De Havilland Law and has won her a great deal of praise and admiration.
Tumblr media
Her performance in The Heiress is one of my all-time favorites, she’s so good at making melodrama feel real and grounded without sacrificing any of the passion/drama.
Serenely beautiful, she struck a balance between crowd-pleasing fluff and prestigious drama. Famously at odds with her equally successful sister Joan Fontaine, she was too much of a lady to ever say anything public. Successfully sued Ryan Murphy for portraying her as a saucy gossip in Feud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the period costume + eye patch combo in That Lady is just an absolute serve
Tumblr media
She has the most adorable and cherubic face and voice
