I rag on Maes Hughes for being chill with genocide but to be *entirely* fair upon a reread, it's not like he's loving it, he's just not particularly haunted by it either. Roy rants about how this is a betrayal of how he joined the military to protect people (mistake number one, dude, seriously) and Maes calls him naive. His reason for fighting is to stay alive. While Roy talks about his dreams of a better future, Maes refers to letters from his girlfriend as his brighter future. He's willing to support Roy's ambitions because Roy's his friend, but he thinks they're childish.
The impression I get is that Hughes has decided he can tolerate atrocities as long as he stays alive and can go home to his loving family, so he leans into that loving family really hard. That's his reward. That's what makes it worth it. Which adds a layer to Envy killing him while disguised as his wife. You can't hold those things separate. If you're a collaborator propping up an awful regime, your family (and you) will still eventually become its victims. The rot at the heart of the nation is wearing your loved one's face.

Liking Gray Wing not in the "he's wise and did nothing wrong" kinda way but in a "characters who sabotage their interpersonal relationships and defend heinous actions for the sake of someone who doesn't care if they live or die are really interesting" kinda way

To me (because I like making myself suffer) there are 2 other types of universes where Jayce and Viktor make hextech. If Viktor is always the mage, able to go to all universes where Jayce gets stuck in that blizzard with his mom, maybe he doesn't exactly know how that particular universe ends and is just searching for the exact one Jayce (and also Ekko) can save.
Viktor dies before Jayce can save (also doom) him with the hexcore. Maybe it's before the explosion, maybe he dies with Sky, maybe he just goes to bed and doesn't wake up. Jayce deals with this however you interpret. Maybe he goes crazy and destroys universes trying to find a healthy Viktor who won't die before their dream can be fully lived. Maybe he intentionally creates The Machine Herald this time. Maybe he stops inventing and just. Becomes a loner.
They are able to create hextech without any death/damage at all. Maybe Jayce and Viktor (who could find out about it before Jayce's place is robbed) and discover it's potential somewhere else. Maybe they start in Zaun and end up improving the lives of everyone there that Silco and Vander reconnect, Powder and VI stay sisters, everyone stays alive. Maybe Viktor is able to find a cure for his illness (and therefore find no need to experiment, since the fear of death will no longer control him.)

Watched Implicitly Pretentious’ video on Clash from JL:U and want to blab
Like they said, this Superman is like this because he’s been through this all before, he’s kinda gotten his old values shaved down and narrowed to still being a hero but not the one he started out as. Which, just hurts to see progressively get worse and that version of Superman become a simpler, angrier version of himself for a time, and it hurts to see that current state of Clark clashing with Billy.
In the final goodbye he gives the League as he’s resigning, Billy says it himself, he’s fought his own battles before and each time he didn’t stoop to his bullies level to win. Each time Billy was out there he was thinking “What would Superman do?” like a lot of people do, he tried to be that ideal he’d grown up seeing in this universe and he actually got there.
Batman says it kinda humorously in another scene during that episode when Clark says “I thought I was the Boy Scout.” and Batman responds with “I did too, until I met Captain Marvel.” Billy is quite literally what Superman used to be in that world, someone trying to do the right thing because they can and be an example of what to do. Clark used to be Billy’s example of what to do, but when this Clark at that time met him he was annoyed at how naive he seemed.
Once more like IP said, Clark’s lost that passion to believe that people could get better as heroism’s become to routine and job like to him and the League as a whole that Billy still has. But because the League doesn’t, because they don’t act like heroes anymore, Billy leaves. He obviously made friends or was friendly with other League members, he’s a hero working with the people he grew up admiring and wanting to be like, but he leaves when they aren’t standing for the ideals they inspire.

Love how we can all agree that, while never explicitly talked about, it’s awful suspicious that the two bats Talia had heavy influence over both tried to kill Tim.

sorry that reminds me. mark and william parallels. never fully believed in the system they were under but never did anything about it until they experienced a highly traumatic event that flipped their world and worldview on its head, losing all faith in the system they were under and falls more and more away with every loss they experience. vs dakota and tide who have always had faith and gains even more every time they lose something. there's a full analysis post in here somewhere but words are escaping me

Idk if I'm gonna be able to articulate this on the fly like first thing in the morning, but. I think my ENTIRE body of work is This: Examining how family ties, bonds or lack thereof, the good and bad AND ugly, seep into every facet of who we are and how we come to interact with others. How sometimes, a family tie (or again, a Lack of one), will sometimes bleed into how you act and treat specific people. Will bleed into how you CONNECT with those people (or, will be the very reason you fail to do so).
HOWEVER. HOWEVER. THERE IS A DELICATE LINE. A BALANCING ACT. You CANNOT just simply attribute fanon flavored ideas of found family to such characters. That's too simple, and sometimes, is a complete disservice to the specific character you're working with. I am once again bringing up Chilchuck. YES, him being a dad Absolutely seeps into how he treats his party. But if you call him the party's dad, you're Insane. Do you know ANYTHING ABOUT THAT MAN???? He would prefer you didn't. But I digress. He strikes a fascinating balance, between having The Qualities and ESPECIALLY expressing his care for his party in a Really Specific divorced (separated.) father of three fashion, but that does Not make him a "dad friend". He's a professional. He's on business. He's going home at the end of the day, and at the end of this adventure he's thinking of setting up a shop. I wanted to keep this more vague and broad but like. The Chilchuck example REALLY DOES perfectly articulate What I'm trying to get at, here. He's the perfect encapsulation of How his family shapes him, how that bleeds into his relationships with others, vs Who he is as a person.
How we were raised, our family ties, whether you adhere to it or you've fallen FAR from the tree -- you still fell from that stupid fucking tree. It's in your blood. Literally. It gave you shape, whether you liked it or not. And sometimes some things just set off weird domino effects, that also affect us irrevocably forever.
WHICH IS. TO SAY. I have no fucking idea what I'm talking about. I'm always trying to figure that out. Found family is/can be real, you're not strictly bound by blood if you don't wanna be. BUT. The bullshit I'm constantly on, is trying to figure out how to balance all that without slotting everyone into reductive roles. I'm gay and I seek to destroy the nuclear family. Not attempt to recreate nuclear family 2.0. You CAN reconstruct What Family Is/Means from the ground up, but you have to accept that things are going to get Weird. Because you're Queer. You are fundamentally incompatible with the status quo and normalcy, the solution is NOT assimilation and palatability, the solution is to just. Get weirder. And be fluent in canon. Okay. I love you
#my notes#why am i becoming chilchuck's spokesperson. chilchuck defender.#well i can fucking tell you! it's because my dad is a divorced father of FIVE. with a drinking problem so bad#that if he didn't quit it would have killed him. and guess what! i can tell you a few things about alfonse.#the way alfonse strives to be just like gustav. idealizing him ect ect. and the way i just wanna grab him by the shoulders#and SHAKE HIM. SHAKE HIM. SHAKE HIM. snap him out of repeating the cycles by the power of friendship and gay sex#it SUCKS ASS TO SAY IT IN THE SAME BREATH. I HATE THIS AS MUCH AS YOU DO.#but if you (my own brother) are gonna end up Just Like Your Father could you at least go all the way. get divorced. for the love of god#get divorced. oh my god okay oversharing hour but the WAY. THE WAY. dad once told me#[my brother's now ex wife far as i know thank god it finally happened bu my god it took WAY too long]#but the way my dad told me once [my brother's ex wife] reminded him a bit of his second wife.#oh my god i didn't even tell you the famous dad lore. he's been divorced three times. he is THE EPIC DIVORCE MAN.#like when i look at chilchuck i go. i know this man personally. i live with him.#alfonse's case is. really. really way more complicated. like what i just said#truly is only the tip of the iceberg WHILE ALSO. SIMULTANEOUSLY. only being One Single Facet. to what he is to me.#BUT ALSO. CONSIDER. the Parallels i'm setting up between alfonse w gustav VS. moe and its mother.#okay i will not say more bc i'll talk forever. final piece i really want to throw out there is though#do you think anna's situation w her family business being The Basis of how she connects w others#do you think the WAY she and all the other annas were Raised is like. comparable to religion actually?#and ESP like. i don't know if there's any hard and fast rules or anything but she and all her sisters ARE.#PRESUMABLY. RAISED A V SPECIFIC WAY. to be highly competitive cut-throat merchants.#what does this mean for COMMANDER anna. one of (if not ONLY?) instance of an anna who fell outside of that.#also is it agab dependant? could you be amab and then later on become an anna if that's what#oh my god i'm thinking of that ratatouille post. accepting of your gender identity but NOT of your Life Choice to be a chef.#is it. exactly like that. and if you're afab and end up being trans do you just fall to the wayside?#like the point is NOT to inject transphobia in here. the point is to ask Okay HOW THE HELL DOES ANY OF THIS WORK???????#bc the Implications go INSANE. and also the point is to ask what is the funniest answer possible to any of the questions#I'M HERE TO HAVE FUN. AND BE INSANE.#like final clarification i only say religion bc that's what i'm familiar with (specifically christainity)#but maybe it's more apt -- a different flavor of traditional family culture that has strict gender roles.

i am suddenly thinking a lot about jiang cheng and jiang fengmian, specifically in how jiang fengmian—while not being outright cruel to jiang cheng—gives us no reason to believe that he is proud of or pleased with jiang cheng due to jiang cheng’s 1) penchant of maintaining a certain status quo/refusal to take risks and 2) the similarities of his personality to yu ziyuan. and yet, the time we see jiang cheng put himself in the danger, take a risk, defy yu ziyuan, is when he is putting himself in yu ziyuan’s own line of fire to protect wei wuxian from zidian, all while the wens are there and the threat they pose is dangerously tangible. and jiang fengmian is not even there to see it, let alone live long enough to hear of the events.
no clown activities (pro/anti character discourse) allowed on this post
#also on an unrelated note i think a lot abt how people who are also jc stans#sometimes try to represent jfm as someone who is actively harsh to jc#most likely to mirror the way yzy treats wwx#and i think what those depictions fail to realize#is that there is a certain heartbreak that comes w/ a parent that is passive#a parent who does not say anything distinctly mean but u know they are disappointed and displeased with u#a parent who will not say something in ur defense#a parent who will not defend u to others#a parent who lets the other say whatever to u and not interfere so waves are not stirred#and i think that is jc’s situation#we see it ourselves- jc is the point of contention yzy uses against jfm to taunt him abt his care towards wwx#and i think it offers a very tragically nice distinction to wwx#we have the harsh domineering physical lady of the house#and then we have the passive (almost domestically centrist) man of the house#and i think very often people use this as a pissing content to fight over#*contest#when really neither situation is ideal and neither pride come out of it unaffected#but it’s like. just as people try to push ‘wwx secretly hated lotus pier all along’ pushing jfm as overtly cruel just-#takes away the actual sadness present of a parent who u know deep down will not defend u#(and then jyl is also an interesting third party here-#bc we see jfm stick up for his daughter’s happiness-#and as far as i remember that’s kinda it with jfm and jyl?#but yzy. is also imo clearly displeased with jyl and thinks her neither capable nor powerful)#also i should note. jiang cheng is one of my all time favorite mdzs characters

Listening to the Hadestown OST and getting fricked up over the musical and the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice again
> Listening to the song I chose for that (still unfinished) Jaiden and Roier animatic and getting even more fricked up
>> Listening to Epic III from the soundtrack and getting even more fricked up thinking about Pac and Madagio – specifically Pac appealing to Madagio's humanity (for lack of a better word), drawing parallels between Madagio and Fit and asking Madagio to change the narrative so he and Fit aren't doomed to the same fate as them.

I'm... kind of confused about this? Like Ignatz is basically saying the only way for people to move forward is by continuing to fight and destroy? That's a pretty awful message in general, but coming from Ignatz it just feels weird. It sounds like he's just accepted war and that it's just... something that happens so we should shrug it off and move on?
I know this game tends to have very strong pro-war/pro-invasion messages which is already really gross to me, but it went from being annoying and icky to just making me feel disgusted. Also, Ignatz of all people shouldn't just shrug his shoulders and be like well that's just the way of things, I guess! There's an active war going on so it makes sense that towns could be rebuilt and destroyed again. It doesn't mean just give up on it.
Also really doesn't feel like an Ignatz thing to say.
#DCB Three Hopes Run#I'll be honest I have very low opinions of people when I see them say shit like#Edelgard is in the right and it she was justified to invade territories#if there was provocation/she was attacked by another territory first I'd get it#but I can't sympathize with the concept in general of attacking another nation that has nothing to do with you#it feels absolutely disgusting and seeing people actually DEFEND that is extremely concerning about their real life values#especially when she's very open about how the purpose of it is conquest and not actually the Church#and no nobody can use the Faerghus sheltering refugees as an excuse bc she attacks them in both games#and they didn't shelter the Church at all outside CF. in Hopes it's just a reason the writers needed to be able to#make it so the game had a similar story to Houses and to give a reason so the war still happened#Faerghus was quite literally minding its own business and growing at an astoundingly fast pace#and suddenly they have to decide whose side to take in a war? they didn't want to go to war but they were forced#and Ignatz here basically shrugging his shoulders figuring it's just a way of life to be at war is... not a good message#people who initiate war do it for their own political and territorial gain and that's true of this story too#it's not a question of whether or not it was Edelgard's goal bc she just outright SAYS it is#like... she's not hiding it? she's not trying to dodge the fact? and like again you can like her character as a fictional character#but it would be like if I said I love Ashnard and bc of that I agreed with his goals ideals and values and that#he was justified in attacking Crimea and torturing laguz. he's a really cool character and I love what he brings to the story#but there's a fine line between finding a fictional character interesting/fascinating#and outright defending their actions and basically saying conquest is okay as long as you tell people it's for another reason#i.e. Edelgard gave the propaganda about ''for the people'' but that wasn't her goal. if it WAS#she'd be contacting Dimitri in those two years like hey I see you guys are making strides in your politics mind giving us some advice#if her goal was for the people she would've spent those two years for the people and fixing shit not preparing for war#it just... really leaves a sick feeling for me that people legitimately believe her violence is justified and that here Ignatz is basically#saying that war is just a thing we all should just accept. like... how is war the only way for humans to move forward???#the one good thing Twitter does is that it tries to at least give sympathies to attacked nations#if this game was real you'd be seeing ''Faerghus attacked'' ''Faerghus invaded'' ''pray for Faerghus'' all over Twitter lmao#like if this was never a fictional story and if it was just real life there would have been only support on social media
