i am suddenly thinking a lot about jiang cheng and jiang fengmian, specifically in how jiang fengmian—while not being outright cruel to jiang cheng—gives us no reason to believe that he is proud of or pleased with jiang cheng due to jiang cheng’s 1) penchant of maintaining a certain status quo/refusal to take risks and 2) the similarities of his personality to yu ziyuan. and yet, the time we see jiang cheng put himself in the danger, take a risk, defy yu ziyuan, is when he is putting himself in yu ziyuan’s own line of fire to protect wei wuxian from zidian, all while the wens are there and the threat they pose is dangerously tangible. and jiang fengmian is not even there to see it, let alone live long enough to hear of the events.

#also on an unrelated note i think a lot abt how people who are also jc stans #sometimes try to represent jfm as someone who is actively harsh to jc #most likely to mirror the way yzy treats wwx #and i think what those depictions fail to realize #is that there is a certain heartbreak that comes w/ a parent that is passive #a parent who does not say anything distinctly mean but u know they are disappointed and displeased with u #a parent who will not say something in ur defense #a parent who will not defend u to others #a parent who lets the other say whatever to u and not interfere so waves are not stirred #and i think that is jc’s situation #we see it ourselves- jc is the point of contention yzy uses against jfm to taunt him abt his care towards wwx #and i think it offers a very tragically nice distinction to wwx #we have the harsh domineering physical lady of the house #and then we have the passive (almost domestically centrist) man of the house #and i think very often people use this as a pissing content to fight over #*contest #when really neither situation is ideal and neither pride come out of it unaffected #but it’s like. just as people try to push ‘wwx secretly hated lotus pier all along’ pushing jfm as overtly cruel just-#takes away the actual sadness present of a parent who u know deep down will not defend u #(and then jyl is also an interesting third party here-#bc we see jfm stick up for his daughter’s happiness-#and as far as i remember that’s kinda it with jfm and jyl?#but yzy. is also imo clearly displeased with jyl and thinks her neither capable nor powerful)#also i should note. jiang cheng is one of my all time favorite mdzs characters
