Playkit - A Complicated Profession

My most recent work on Google Spreadsheets is a playkit for the game A Complicated Profession! This is a game about retired bounty hunters running a cruise ship - in space! The game sheets are really nice for in-person play, but my game group is going to be playing online, and we really needed something all of us could see and fiddle with.

Because players are creating characters by combining two different archetypes, I decided to list each set of archetypes in two tabs, and then provide a place for players to copy & paste their chosen archetypes into their character sheet.

As usual, I've also included a Session 0 page with my updated Lines, Veils & Lures, as well as a list of common Safety Tools. There's also a page for the group to use to create their home sector, as well as keep track of their passenger contracts.

hc that the angels are all born in specific generations. Each gen gets a little more advanced, a little more altered as the Arch kinda evolves its children. Maybe every time one of them dies it analyzes their life/how the died and makes adjustments based on that?

But anywho.

Gen 1 is of course the Archangels.

Gen 2 has maybe 25 angels? 5 for each Arche. Includes Urzael, but none of the other lieutenants.

And from there the gens get exponentially larger.

Anyway the only reason I'm even thinking about this is cuz I like thinkin about how everyone Inarius knew and loved is dead, either killed by the war he desperately wanted to escape, or by his wife after he pushed her to the brink of madness.

And I was thinkin' it'd be just the cherry on top if he was the last angel from his gen alive. I guess it'd be kinda like being the last person from a graduating class standing. He's probably pretty high up, coming out pretty quickly after Tyrael. Gen 2 or 3.

Although it might be even worse if he's like. Gen 56. And still the hundreds of other angels who came out of the arch with him are all dead.

Not to mention the mild existential horror of having your friend die and then meeting their replacement. They are eerily similar. Down to name and mannerism and what they do. But they look just different enough to be uncanny, and of course they don't remember you at all.

And this has also happened hundreds, even thousands of times, to everyone around you.

Actually the longer I think about it the worse the whole 'arch replacement' system gets.

Ok so a long while back I had a story with a trio of main characters who each represented a core aspect of the world they were trying to protect: the natural, the technological, and the magical (a human, a sentient AI, and a shapeshifter witch)

and then a few years later I made a sequel to it with a new trio and somehow by complete accident made them represent the same things as the first trio except this time combined with elements of another aspect (a human who finds out he's more magical than he expected (he's a demigod), a shapeshifter being who relies on tech for communication and accessibility (he can only turn into a few things and none of them are very expressive or mobile), and a sentient android that looks so human almost nobody can tell he's not (even his best friends))

and the whole point of the first story was those initial three protecting their world from people who wanted to separate or eliminate one of the three elements (trying to get rid of magic and technology altogether), and the reason why i wrote the second story was to write something a few decades into the future showing the impact those first characters had in bringing those elements together. and i accidentally put the perfect themes into the new main trio

me thinking "damn, i'm bummed that i couldn't slip in some more obvious references to the DS9 polycule in today's fic" has gotten me started on thinking about a DS9 modern au (in its most polyamorous form, of course) and now i'm--

what's the best way to have all of these people know each other?? like i think modern military fundamentally Does Not Work for them (and is also not what i want to write for them). i know deep dish nine exists but restauranting doesn't super apply to me either.

honestly i'm leaning towards just having them know each other in disconnected ways (so like, jadzia and sisko know each other through curzon, but sisko met kira at work, julian is new at jadzia's job, miles and keiko live next door to julian..... for example). but that also sounds overly elaborate and doesn't really explain how they ALL know each other?

do people have thoughts on DS9 modern aus?

I had a very meaningful and humbling experience with a client and her pet today. I am always amazed and surprised by the human animal bond and feel very grateful to be the one to help make that transition from here on earth to their next destination.

I love hearing the nicknames they've been given their whole lives and seeing pictures from when they were young.

I admire so much the things owners do to honor their pets by bringing their favourite toys or beds or playing calming music or singing or prayers.

As much as I am very (very) burnt out from this profession and need a long over due break, I will never not be moved by these things. I will always stay late to make the perfect paw print. I will always hold them and talk to them after death as I would when they were breathing just moments ago. I will always be grateful for the gift of humane euthanasia and being able to end the suffering of our best friends.

Today was met with too many goodbyes but my heart and thoughts are with their people who were able to make the hardest decision for their pets to ultimately end their pain. I love you and I hope you find comfort in these coming days.

(( Since I’m going along with Tam’s lore for necromancy and how that works—

Merfolk are more familiar with how necromancy works and the uses of necromancy than landfolk, as they have no ban, legal nor historical nor cultural, placed on necromancy specifically.

For this, most merfolk think the jumpiness around necromancy is... weird? Historically merfolk have had far greater issues with sourcing any magic at all, so fussing about schools and forms of magic after that was something they never were able to fuss with. Nowadays, it’s even moreso not worried about which particular type of magic is at use in comparison to magic at all being a factor. Likewise, because of these, there’s never been able for rumors to spring up around necromancy specifically, or myths and stereotypes to form about it.

To merfolk, necromancy has always been maintenance of and for the undead, so the stories about necromancers raising armies of the undead to them not only doesn’t ring a bell to them, but doesn’t even make sense in the first place. Since merfolk are likewise more comfortable with death and have more interactions with death, they aren’t... particularly scared of the undead? They know what bodies look like, and they know their physical qualities, and when you add on how often merfolk like to “ferment” their meat, they know that living flesh is always going to put up more of a fight than dead flesh. An undead army doesn’t scare them, because it’s ostensibly worse than just having a living army. Alongside having greater fear of living armies and historical precedent for that.

Mostly merfolk just think it’s weird how much landfolk are scared of what’s fundamentally a healthcare profession for them.

Which of your OCs would be most likely to get arrested and why?

Vivian and Gavin Hawke (as the eldest set of Hawke twins, they’re most likely to be partners in crime) because both of them are “throw punches first, think of consequences later” types with short fuses to their tempers and sarcastic mouths with very little filters.

Zoe Dawson has been arrested for arson, namely because she flicked a lit cigarette into her professor’s car through the cracked window, hoping to just singe the upholstery after he sided with her (very recent) ex-boyfriend’s accusations that she plagiarized his journalism essay final paper instead of the other way around without hearing her side or even looking at the evidence she had to clear her name. Instead of an unfortunate cigarette burn, some papers caught fire and a partially opened and spilled bottle of booze under the driver’s seat accelerated the blaze and she wound up torching the car instead.

Gabriel Hawke, most likely because he was an accessory to some crime/trespassing charge his cousin Alex committed and unlike the Trevelyan side of the family, he can’t parkour or sprint for shit and would most likely be the one the cops catch. Alex would make it up to him by posting bail and then buying like a month’s worth of tacos or trips to Gabe’s favorite pancake place.

Love love love LOVE the juxtaposition of Scott with his crew vs Scott with the science-types. With his crew, he seems like the straight man amongst the eccentric personalities, the one that's keeping the chuckleheads in line. Then with Hope and Hank (and later Janet, Tony, Bruce, etc), Scott becomes the goof, the comedic relief. And it's just beautiful, because neither of them feels wrong for his character, he's never pretending to be something he's not with either group. It's about the sides of him that are brought out when around different people.

So since bimbo!reader is oblivious to Simon's real profession, how does he explain when he has to be deployed for weeks at a time and maybe even comes home with some fresh injuries? Or maybe, what does she just assume is the case and not ask questions because whatever vague answer he gave her once was already far too complicated for her so she lets it be?

It's easy for Simon to keep it a secret from bimbo!reader at first since canonically his deployments have always been short, but when he starts to spend more time away with the 141 and has to go dark for days? She can't help but feel worried, thinking he's ghosting her (hehe funny pun) or he has a secret family.

She's very open about her concerns once he comes back, even when he reassured her he was only away for work she keeps pressing. It isn't until he sees her with teary eyes and asking him to tell her the truth that he actually dares to admit it. First he tells her he's just in the military, but then actually opens up about being in the SAS and for how long he's been serving.

Simon does a very good job at reassuring her that he'll be okay, and that he's very good at what he does— probably shows her the medals he's gotten throughout the years as well, if it helps to reassure her that he knows what he's doing and is pretty damn good at it.

He feels a lot better after telling her, and since the 141 is pretty much his family, she gets to meet them eventually. This girl would absolutely chat Price's ear off and behind their backs, ask him to please watch out over Simon during missions.
