Heard y’all like horses!
[ID: Illustration of a pale grey horse with a dark smouldering head from which a great deal of smoke erupts. The smoke climbs onto a very dark stormy sky, the colors slowly blending together. The foreground is made up of lots of dried prairie grasses.]

The traditional legends of Cuca (pronounced ku·kuh) tell that she is an ugly old woman who appears in the form of a crocodile and steals disobedient children. The cuca only sleeps once every seven years, and parents sometimes use this element of the legend to scare children who don't want to sleep, saying that the cuca will get them if they don't go to bed. Although cuca comes from Portuguese coca, in Tupi (indigenous language of Brazil), Cuca means swallowing something in a single gulp.
Even in several cultures there are lullabies that refer to Cuca, in Brazil the main refrain of the lullaby is commonly known:
Nana neném                           Sleep, little one Que a Cuca vem pegar            The Cuca’s going to get you Papai foi pra roça                    Daddy went to the fields Mamãe foi passear                  Mommy went for a walk Desce gatinho                         Come down, little cat De cima do telhado                  From the roof Pra ver se a criança                 To see if the child Dorme um sono sossegado       Is sleeping peacefully.
The legend of Cuca was popularized in Brazil by Monteiro Lobato, through his work "Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo", in this story she is portrayed as a humanoid alligator with blond hair and red clothes, a sorceress who torments children who live around where she lives. (This is the most striking version of how it is recognized here)
But it is believed that the Legend of Cuca has its origins in Galician-Portuguese folklore based on the creature “Coca”, which means “skull head”.
The "Coca" is a ghost or a dragon that eats disobedient children that lurks on the roofs of houses, and kidnaps them after doing some mischief.
(But it is worth pointing out that the true source of the Cuca that we know is very difficult to define, due to the miscegenation of various cultures)
Recently Netflix launched a series that is based on Brazilian folklore called "Cidade Invisivel", in the story we follow the detective Eric in the midst of investigating the death of his wife, until some mysteries begin to intrigue the character, and folklore figures like Iara , Saci-Pererê, Curupira etc, start to appear in action. And, of course, especially Cuca, who in this version is portrayed from a different perspective, being a human woman who is a kind of witch of dreams, specialist in putting people to bed/trance, being seen as a protector of all these entities of the world. the great protective mother. It welcomes these beings, who in history live on the margins, because they were expelled from their place of origin (the forest) and are lost in the middle of the city.
I remember finishing the first season, about 2/3 years ago and simply falling in love with this new version of Cuca (who in the series is played by actress Inês Negrine). And luckily, tomorrow (03/22/2023) the 2nd season of Invisible City will finally be released, exploring our folklore even more and bringing even a little more of the tales and stories of the peoples originating in Brazil!
So, I took some time to try to combine these two versions, which are so different but still valid according to research and stories that travel around Brazil (Cuca alligator is the result of legends coming from Portugal and by the representation of Monteiro Lobato, the "traditional" Cuca of original people folklore was associated with owls and moths and this was rescued in the series, as I said there is no wrong source, just a mixture of cultures!!!), so I created my "own" Cuca to celebrate the release of the season and our culture. And that's what it turned out!
I'm going to leave here some links to see the trailer for season 1 and 2 of Invisible City, in case anyone is interested. And also a link to a scene from the series that shows how the lullaby is recited around here.
trailer for the first season of invisible city with english subtitles here! Trailer for the 2nd season of invisible city (unfortunately I couldn't find the trailer with English subtitles, but you can activate the automatic subtitles translated into English through YouTube) Scene from the series with the lullaby here! (The audio is not the best)

Hey Guys. Apparently I was scammed by a cryptobro
TL,DR: Would someone buy prints of my work to help to get through the month?
Hi guys
I really need help due to a commission that appears to be done through a scam using Binance, which is a cryptocurrency app, something I never really wanted to use. The commissioner would pay me 400 dollars - in my local currency, its the equivalent of almost 2000$, something that would greatly help me given my financial situation for the month. But, every time that I think the funds would finally be liberated to my account, the app asks for different transactions to be made - called service fees. The last one left me completely without money to get through the month, as I already have late bills from last month that only get bigger due to bank fees.
And before you say anything about how gullible I was, I really needed this extra money. I really prefer using PayPal for international transactions, but I did what the client said due to my situation and amateur stand in the art community.
In this case, I really need help. So I ask: Would some of you buy any artwork of mine as prints if I sold them? I created the little info above the text last night. The galleries that are avaiable are the following:
Demonktober 2020
Dinovember/Dinocember 2020
MythicMay 2020
2020's Brazilian Folklore Drawings
Thanks for the attention.

Day 17 - Folklore

Note
For the folclore I thought of a duo... although, they are from the Brazilian folklore.
You could do Boitatá and Boiûna, they are two giant snakes, Boitatá is a giant snake on fire, that protects the forest and the other is completely black and is about how the night was created.
Although, there are other ones that I think it's funny to use, like the pink dolphin, literally a dolphin that turns into a human and fucks married ladies.
There are others that are really interesting that I can send if you want.

Content: gender neutral reader, monster romance (?), respectfully humorous
You wanted to be more adventurous. Thus, on a whim, you decided to pack a bag with necessities and begin your little hike through the Brazilian forests.
What could go bad?
Good question. You’ve considered many risks, yet your first aid kit did not foresee that you’d be stuck in the hollow of a tree, pressed between two enormous serpents.
What were you even doing out there by yourself? Oh, you silly creature. As the guardians of the forest, it is their duty to ensure safety at all times. Not everyone’s, of course. You just happened to catch their eye.
Despite your pleads, they refuse to let you go. Too many dangers out there, and besides, they’re rather fond of the little human they just acquired.
Your only hope had been a young, handsome man who happened to pass by. To your great shock, he was rather indifferent to the monstrous beasts, and they were equally unbothered by the intruder.
“I could use a hand”, you huffed under the weight of the scaly, slithering bodies.
“Are you married by any chance?” he asked. Then, he glanced at the two snakes, and back at you. “You know what, I might just return later.”
Later? You groaned as the cold grip tightened.

Manifestation of a baby and adult Boitatá ~🐍✨ A personal interpretation of my favorite folk creature from my country.
---
Boitatá is a legendary figure in Brazilian folklore, arising from the anthropomorphization of the "Will-o'-the-wisp" phenomenon that occurs in Brazilian rivers. In each region, it is interpreted differently, but the most popular is that of a fire snake that lives in the waters and protects the forests against those who threaten them, being a type of guardian of the forests. The name Boitatá means "Thing of fire" in the Tupi-Guarani language.
In my fantasy interpretation, I wanted to represent the different shades of colors that fire can assume, depending on the material that is burned.

On the left is the Dolphin Delighter, as in it is a magical talking fey "dolphin" that delights others. It likes to telepathically sing sea shanties and cause dazzling bursts of healing light. It also can teleport as it leaps, and is around 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8 m) long. As @valvadis pointed out, it seems likely that it's based on the Boto Cor De Rosa of Brazilian folklore. Shapeshifters that show up to parties, play music/dance/drink/fuck, and disappear into the night. Which does fit with the the "Fey" designation of the D&D version.
On the right is the Morkoth. In 5e, these are 6 ft (1.8 m) octopus-like creatures, born from the corpse of a god of greed and strife shattering on impact with a bit of celestial landmass. These greedy hoarders creatures can hypnotize, create darkness, teleport, and grapple with thier many tentacles. They live on thier own dreamscape islands, the temperature perfectly warm and floating through every plane imaginable. So cool backdrop too!

[Sponsored by @some-trash-pigeon. The merrow is the Irish version of the mermaid, and like many folkloric mermaids, typically the men appear grotesque and the women gorgeous. The name has been in D&D since the 1e AD&D Monster Manual, and a similar version appears in Pathfinder. The AD&D/PF merrow is an aquatic ogre, which didn't get a unique stat block until Pathfinder. D&D 5e decided to revamp the merrow, and I gotta say, it's near the top of the list for "biggest art glow-up". And, since the folkloric merrow is a merman rather than a big aquatic guy, it's more accurate to boot.
So why the name "ipupiara"? Well, for one thing, "merrow" is taken in Pathfinder. For another, the ipupiara is a Brazilian mer-thing that is actually oversized, and even has whiskers! That name was suggested to me by monster researcher (and my girlfriend) @abominationimperatrix.]
Ipupiara CR 5 CE Monstrous Humanoid This creature has a humanoid torso and the head and tail of a monstrous fish. It has barbels hanging from its underslung jaw, and fins grow along its head, shoulders and arms. It is sinuous from the waist down, and wears shell jewelry and other trophies and trinkets.
The ipupiara are mutant merfolk, the descendants of merfolk who ventured into the Abyss and adapted to its hostile waters. They can be found on any Abyssal layer with aqueous environments, and their scaly hides are capable of withstanding extremes of heat and cold. Although they have no ability to traverse the planes on their own, they are often found on the Material Plane, where they are a menace to sailors and fishermen. The first ipupiara were worshippers of Dagon, and the majority of them still serve the Shadow in the Sea.
Ipupiara are bullies above all else and tend to target the smallest, weakest victims when they have a chance. They carry barbed harpoons, which they use to latch onto prey, before squeezing them to death in their muscular coils. Ipupiara string up the mutilated corpses of their victims as territorial warnings, typically missing their eyes, noses, fingers and toes. Ipupiara can survive in any temperature of water, but prefer to lair in three-dimensional substrates such as kelp forests, shipwrecks and sea caves.
An ipupiara is about fifteen feet long, half of which is tail.

Decided to draw a creature from brazilian folklore, cause a giant fire snake is metal af
Tumblr media
The Boitatá, on brazilian folklore, is depicted as a giant fire snake with a bunch of eyes, that protects the forests from invaders and firestarters.
It's name derives from the Tupi-Guarani language, that literally means "Fire Snake"
My drawing was supposed to look like a Green Anaconda (Sucuri-verde), since they are the biggest snakes in the world i though It would be cool to draw one as the Boitatá! Also they are very dangerous, don't let them hug you-

Today's Weretober prompt is Mule!
The Headless Mule (Mula Sem Cabeça) from Brazilian folklore is a cursed creature said to had been a willingly sinful woman, but it seems to have evolved over the years to curse more somehow...
Now it can even run on two legs
A creature with eyes of coal and white-hot fangs, it'd be a wonder if you could survive a bite to become one
