hello everyone, annoying spaniard here!!! these last few days i've been stressing over assignments so i didn't have time or will to post one of these, but i'm back and this post is gonna be a bit longer so yay!

if you don't know what i'm doing, i'm just playing pokemon scarlet and violet and commenting on any references to my culture i come across :) here's my previous post btw

let's start with porto marinado's marketplace!! markets are big in spain, they can be found all throughout the country and i feel there's not a single market that served as inspiration for the paldean one, below i'll just add the ones i know the most / the most representative ones: the la cebada and san miguel markets in madrid, the la boquería market in barcelona, and the central market in valència

staying on this topic, i also really like kofu as a gym leader and specifically as a chef! as you could already imagine by looking at paldea, food is incredibly important in spain, it is part of our cultural identity and it plays a huge part in almost every aspect of daily life. there's 283 michelin stars in the country, and spanish chefs have won the title of best chefs in the world on numerous occasions. cooking shows are very popular, and in most of them there's always a section where the chef goes to the market to get fresh produce, just like kofu does! his personality reminds me a lot of famous tv chef karlos arguiñano, while his design is more similar to chef josé andrés, an incredible human being who's done a lot of humanitarian aid around the world and who recently got awarded with a honorific plaque in kyiv by ukrainian president zelensky as well as with the order of honor.

i've already commented on this but i hadn't seen the actual postal office building until now; the colour of mail service here is yellow, just like in the games :)

i found a new restaurant which means new food yay!!!

the first dish is just pintxos, similar to tapas but make them basque, and that area is really big on fish and seafood so it makes sense than their pokemon counterpart also has them!

even if arroz con leche is usually associated with argentina, it actually originated in spain and it is a traditional dessert still handmade in rural areas and widely consumed all over the country

ceviche is peruvian!

the fourth dish is probably a reference to espetos

the fifth is just pasta lol

even though levincia is 100% inspired in valència, both because of its location and its modern / technological look (also its name), the business area looks like it took inspiration on the cuatro torres business area and the AZCA district in madrid, the heart of business stuff in the country.

(btw the four towers in the pic are now five so much closer to their pokémon counterparts)

also as a quick note i find very funny the fact that the largest company in paldea seems to be a construction one, as the 2008 spanish economic crisis started (among other factors) due to the high speculation within that sector lol

i also find iono a hilarious concept for a paldean gym leader cause streamers are actually very popular in spain, i would say most young people (including myself) follow at least one streamer, and just looking at the top streamers list for november 2022, i'm counting 4 spanish streamers in the top 50 of the world. spanish youtubers are pretty high in the hispanic twitch community and for what i've seen on the internet recently younger latines are beginning to associate spain with twitch and streamers which lol. and of course, i cannot talk about spanish streamers without talking about ibai llanos, probably the most influential person to young people right now in the country (and a pretty good influence that is); he has the 4th most-followed twitch channel in the world, he's won the streamer of the year award in 2020 and 2021, held many irl events that have broken twitch view records, and has managed to rival mainstream television. in fact, spanish television seems to hold an absurd grudge against streamers and sees them as direct competitors, it's all very bizarre and makes all of iono's thing even funnier.

also - and i realise this is only a thing that happens in the spanish version of the game but it brought me immense joy and i wanted to share it with you - all of iono's lines and in general all of her gym was full of references to twitter memes and basically internet slang, it was both delightful and painful. here are some of my favorites:

she would say 'hacer la combatición' ('do the fightation') instead of 'combatir' ('fight'), and this is a reference to twitter slang; instead of saying 'morir' ('die') people would just type 'hacer la morición' ('do the diation'). it's just a funny and nonsensical way of saying it, that's it. also i've said this irl so it's one of those expressions capable of jumping outside of the internet into everyday vocabulary

at one point she calls you 'monstro/a' ('monster'), which is an expression the singer and celebrity rosario flores uses during the the voice auditions (she's a coach there) a lot, to the point it became a meme.

this one made me holler because it is one of my favourite expressions and one i use all the time... anyways when you defeat this trainer (i believe he's the first one?) he says 'emosido ganados' ('we have been beaten'). the correct way of writing that phrase is 'hemos sido ganados', and it is a reference to this graffitti which has become a staple in the twitter reaction meme repertoire ('emosido engañado' reads 'we have been fooled', the correct way of writing it is 'hemos sido engañados'). i unfortunately also say this one irl from time to time rip me

He enjoys seeing you all bubbly and smiley, dancing around with either chips or a plate of food in your hand. It's always becomes one of those moments where he looks at you and automatically thinks:

You giggle at his response and gently grab him by the jaw to kiss him on the lips, laughing when he winces and tastes the tequila lingering on your lips. The pre-game session continues for another 30-mins, you, your friends and Yunho all loudly cheering and having fun as the shots continue. Two turns to three, to four, easily. On the way to Yeosang's car, you're clinging onto Yunho as if your life depended on it. But, he loves every bit of it; loves seeing the way you look up at him like he is the moon, the stars, the planets combined.

Which is crazy, cause that's you to Yunho.

He laughs at how drunk you and your friends are, repeatedly kissing the top of your head and forehead until he helps you into the back seat of Yeosang's car. From the passenger's seat, he reaches back and gives your calf a squeeze, reassuring you that he's here and he's not going anywhere.

"Okay." Yeosang settles into the driver's seat and fixes his rear view mirror. "To my pretty ladies in the back, you have your seat belts on?"

"Yes!" Chaery drunkly yells from the middle seat with a loud giggle, with you and Minnie sandwiching her from the outer seats. "Take us to our destination, please!" Yeosang laughs as he shifts the gear into drive.

"On it, boss." Yeosang salutes. "Just promise me you'll make it inside." He playfully teases.

"Kang Yeosang, of course?! Do you have no hope in me?" Chaery leans over to look at him and poke him on the cheek.

"Wait, turn it up! It's my song!" Minnie yells, resulting in Yunho turning up the volume. Luckily, Yeosang isn't fazed by the how loud the car has gotten [including Yunho]. Truthfully, even as he's driving deep into the city and speeding through lanes, he enjoys the chaos.

It reminds him he's good people on his side.

The club is packed for a Friday night, and it seemed like everyone chose to go to this club in particular to celebrate all sorts of festivities. You've all chipped in for a table, which you're escorted to after getting through the short VIP line. You hold onto Yunho's hand tightly as you navigate through the crowds, having to slightly push and nudge your way across until your group makes it to the table— up a few steps and off to the corner from the crowd. The bottle girls instantly greet your group with sparklers and bottles of tequila and champagne in their hands. Your friends waste no time popping the bottles open, ordering more sodas to chase with in between shots and dancing around the table. You take two more shots to keep your energy up, Yunho allowing you to feed him a shot as he sits and looks up at you with his big, brown eyes; listening to you as him so sexily, yet so politely, to open up.

You're having the time of your life with your friends and your man, celebrating your bestfriend on her birthday. You and Yunho are busy dancing together and singing along to songs despite how silly and loud you both get. Yunho holds your hand as he belches out the songs or raps along— feeling himself like he's a 90s music video and you're the love interest he's trying to pursue. You laugh and you laugh, pressing your body close to his after he serenades you just to tippy-toe and kiss him on the lips. He sways you along, the both of you singing together as he wraps his arms around you and presses kisses to your temple.

You realize there's not one day [besides that silly little fight] that you're not smiling over Yunho. He never fails.

Other times, he has you bent over by the rail, gripping your hips, while you throw your ass back or is sitting back against the velvet, watching as you work your hips against him to Megan's Gift & A Curse blasting through the club speakers. Chaery and the rest of your friends are busy making their rounds between each other and on the general dance floor— meeting new people and even exchanging numbers with a few cuties they meet. You and Yunho cheer Yeosang on while you observe from the couches, watching as he dances with a new face on the dance floor, exchanging numbers with her shortly afterwards. "Don't do that." He chuckles against your neck, lightly kissing you in your favorite spot below your earlobe. "You know exactly what."

"Aye!" Seungmin drunkly yells, instantly pouring him and Yunho a shot to gobble down. At this point, Chaery comes to pull you off of Yunho's lap and bring you to the dance floor. You, the girls, Jongho, Hyunjin and Yeonjun are dancing in the middle of the floor, singing your hearts out to the song. You spot Yunho standing with Seungmin, Yeosang and a few others against the rail near the table. You cutely point at him and continue to sing at the top of your lungs in this loud ass club, but all he sees, hears, is you. The entire time, Yunho keeps his eyes on you because it's all about you—

It's always been about you.

Everything is you, Yunho is wrapped up in you; his homie, lover, friend.

And even as the night goes on, even as Yunho's energy dwindles, he still finds himself getting by because he has you. "Should've brought your crocs to change into after."

"I know, huh." You respond before heading into Yunho's room to grab a shirt to change into. "Sorry, I'm gonna call dibs on your shower." Yunho and Yeosang laugh.

"Go for it." Yeosang says, giving Yunho a look. "Think that's an invitation from your girl."

"We won't be long." Yunho laughs a bit, grabbing himself some clothes before following you into the bathroom.

"Uh huh." Yeosang laughs, chugging some water while leaning onto the kitchen counter to indulge in his ramen and snacks.

When Yunho steps inside, you've already stripped out of your clothes, body under the running hot water. You barely notice him come in until he slides the door open and joins you, hands immediately coming to your waist to pull you against him.

"That's a shame. I'm sure she remembers you well."

"Yeah, I dunno." He continues. "She was cute, though. She kinda looked like my future—"

"Then go be with her and ask her to catch the damn sunrise again!" He laughs, gently shoving your food away before tackling you and tickling you to the ground. You squeal and bite him on the shoulder, pleading him to let you go before you accidentally kick him where you shouldn't.

He does, eventually.

He's on top of you, and he just stops and stares. You're not exactly sure what's going through his mind right now, but you know the one thing going through your own mind and that's:

"I love you." You say softly. Yunho continues to look at you before he gives you a tired but sweet toothless smile.

There are many web hosting companies to choose from if you're taking the plunge into making your own website with a comic content management system (CMS) like ComicControl or Grawlix, a Wordpress comic theme like Toocheke or ComicPress, or a HTML template to cut/paste code like Rarebit. While these solutions are generally free, finding a home for them is... generally not. It can be hard to choose what's best for your webcomic AND your budget!

We took a look at a few of the top hosting services used by webcomics creators using webcomic CMSes, and we put out a poll to ask your feedback about your hosts!

This post may be updated as time goes on as new services enter the hosting arena, or other important updates come to light.

Questions:

💻 I can get a free account with Wix/Squarespace/Carrd, could I just use those for my comic? - Web hosts like this may have gallery functions that could be adapted to display a series of pages, but they are very basic and not intended for webcomics.

📚 Wait, I host on Webtoon, Tapas, Comic Fury, or some other comic website, why are they not here? - Those are comic platforms! We'll get into those in a future post!

🕵️‍♀️Why does it say "shared hosting"? Who am I sharing with? - "Shared hosting" refers to sharing the server space with other customers. They will not have access to your files or anything, so it is perfectly fine to use for most comic CMSes. You may experience slowing if there is too much activity on a server, so if you're planning to host large files or more than 10 comics, you may want to upgrade to a more robust plan in the future.

Neocities

Basic plan pricing: Free or $5/month. Free plan has more restrictions (1 GB space, no custom domain, and slower bandwidth, among other things)

Notes: Neocities does not have database support for paid or free accounts, and most comic CMS solutions require this (ComicCtrl, Grawlix, Wordpress). You will need to work with HTML/CSS files directly to make a website and post each page.

Hostinger

Basic plan pricing: $11.99/month or $7.99/month with four year commitment (monthly, 1, 2, and 4 year plans available).

Notes: Free domain for the 1st year. Free SSL Certifications. Weekly backups.

KnownHost

Basic plan pricing: $8.95/month or $7.99/month with four year commitment (monthly, 1, 2, and 4 year plans available).

Notes: Free DDOS protection. Free SSL Certifications.

InMotion Hosting

Basic plan pricing: $12.99/month or $9.99/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, and 3 year plans available).

Notes:  Free SSL Certifications, free domain names for 1 and 3 year plans. 24/7 live customer service and 90-day money-back guarantee. Inmotion also advertises eco-friendly policies: We are the first-ever Green Data Center in Los Angeles. Notes: Free domain for the first year, free SSL Certification, Daily backup and recovery is included. Site Scan and Repair is free for the first 30 days and then is $6/month.

Bluehost

Basic plan pricing: $15.99/month or $4.95/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, 3 year plans available).

Notes: Free domain and SSL certificates (for first year only). 24/7 Customer Service. Built to handle higher traffic websites. Although they specialize in Wordpress websites and provide updates automatically, that's almost a bad thing for webcomic plugins because they will often break your site. Their cloud hosting services are currently in early access with not much additional information available.

Things to consider for any host:

💸 Introductory/promotional pricing - Many hosting companies offer free or inexpensive deals to get you in the door, and then raise the cost for these features after the first year or when you renew. The prices in this post are the base prices that you can expect to pay after the promotional prices end, but may get outdated, so you are encouraged to do your own research as well.

💻 Wordpress hosting - Many of the companies below will have a separate offering for Wordpress-optimized hosting that will keep you updated with the latest Wordpress releases. This is usually not necessary for webcomic creators, and can be the source of many site-breaking headaches when comic plugins have not caught up to the latest Wordpress releases.

Any basic hosting plan on this list will be fine with Wordpress, but expect to stop or revert Wordpress versions if you go with this as your CMS.

🤝 You don't have to go it alone - While free hosts may be more limited, paid hosting on a web server will generally allow you to create different subdomains, or attach additional purchased domains to any folders you make. If you have other comic-making friends you know and trust, you can share your server space and split the cost!
