-------------------------------------------------
Prologue
Until the day I die, I look to the sky Without a single feeling of shame Yet, even amongst the leaves blown by the wind I have suffered With a heart that sings to the stars I shall love all dying things And for the path that has been offered to me I shall walk along it For once again tonight, the wind brushes against the stars

If I had a dime for every chinese tv series I've watched where a newcomer joins a supernatural detective police unit, and in a final battle resists some power overtaking him by remembering the sense of belonging he felt at said unit, I'd have 2 dimes, which isnt a lot but it's weird that it happened twice

Prologue - Yun Dong-ju - South Korea
Translators: Chae-Pyong Song, Darcy Brandel (Korean)
Until the day I die I long to have no speck of shame when I gaze up toward heaven, so I have tormented myself, even when the wind stirs the leaves. With a heart that sings the stars, I will love all dying things. And I will walk the way that has been given to me.
Tonight, again, the wind brushes the stars.

Part of the reason I talk about the League of Nine so much aside from my personal hyperfixation and the interest in Korean literature it awoke in me, is that something that is completely lost in like 99% of western users is that Canto IV and the League of Nine's backstory was Heavily based on the Japanese occupation of Korea since this is the time where the real Yi Sang and Guinhoe lived. Even Mili's song for the Ruina collection Salt, Pepper, Birds and The Thought Police is, in fact made in honor of another author from this era Yun Dong-ju who actively stood up against the Japanese forces. Even Ruina's tagline is a reference to his book Sky, Wind, Stars, and Poetry and every chapter of Ruina starts with a quote from him.
It's very much undivorcable from this context but the information is very hard to access for non-Koreans and a lot of people don't really do the research but I want this aspect of the story to be acknowledged more, specially with the Blade Lineage's storyline highlighting more on the kind of displacement, alienation and corruption that led to them having to abandon their roots much like Limbus' reimagining of the Guinhoe. The reason Dongrang and Gubo are so villafied is because as the Guinhoe corrupted under the pressure of oppression those two were some of the worst offenders, actively writing propaganda and abandoning their people for the sake of siding with whoever benefited them best, and as someone who also grew up living through the aftereffects of colonialism and immigration it's all specially clear to me.
Though personally, I'm quite relieved that the fanwiki has also been updating with the proper resources in regards to the real life background and context, I recommend the pages for at least a more simplified rundown of a lot of the key details and the references made by each member in Canto IV (though it doesn't include some things I have talked about here before and I have made my resolution to contribute to it as well)

Hopepunk video game rec!
Library of Ruina, a long and absolutely incredible deckbuilding RPG with a visual novel-style story. Along with the previous game, Lobotomy Corporation (the much more convoluted installment of the series) it's set in a gory capitalist dystopia known only as The City, where your local energy company (without spoiling too much) is fishing out monsters from hell and throwing employees into the meatgrinder to increase productivity.
But of course the series as a whole is all about hope. It doesn't hold back on how hard it can be to heal - the main challenge stages involve guiding the characters through their trauma, and beforehand they are truly messy people - but in the end it does get better. Library of Ruina in particular is full of small joys, interactions between the cast that show their humanity even in a setting determined to crush it.
The album written by Mili for the soundtrack also has some beautifully hopeful songs: String Theocracy, the opening theme, and Poems of a Machine, the end credits track, are both very touching. Although it's unused, Salt, Pepper, Birds, and the Thought Police has to be the most hopepunk of the album, being based on a true story of the Korean poet Yun Dong-ju under the colonial rule of the time. They all start off sad, but when the hope hits, it hits hard.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, please play the game(s) or at least listen to the music, it means so much to me <3

Up where the seasons pass,
the sky is filled with autumn.
In this untroubled quietude
I could almost count these autumn-couched stars.
But why I cannot now enumerate
those one or two stars in my breast
is because the dawn is breaking soon,
and I have tomorrow night in store,
and because my youth is not yet done.
Memory for one star,
love for another star,
sorrow for another star,
longing for another star,
poetry for another star,
and oh! mother for another star.
Mother! I try to call each star by some such evocative word, names of school children with whom I shared desks, names of alien girls like Pai Kyunh Ok, names of maidens who have already become mothers, names of neighbors who lived in poverty, names of birds and beasts like pigeon, puppy, rabbit, donkey, deer, and names of poets like Francis Jammes and Rainer Maria Rilke.
They are as far away
and intangible as the stars.
Mother!
You too are in the distant land of the Manchus.
Because I have a secret yearning,
seated on this star-showered bank,
I have written my name thereon
and covered it with earth.
In truth, it is because the insects chirp
all night to grieve over my bashful name.
But spring shall come to my stars after winter’s delay,
greening the turf over the graves,
so this bank that buries my name
shall proudly wear the grass again.

If You Wish Upon Me
Synopsis:
Troubled convict Yun Gyeo Re (Ji Chang Wook) is ordered to do community service at an end-of-life care facility for the terminally ill. He must work with the tireless Kang Tae Sik (Sung Dong Il), the leader of the facility’s volunteer team. Tae Sik has launched a unit called Team Genie, which seeks to make the final wishes of dying patients come true, no matter what they ask for. Gyeo Re also meets Seo Yeon Ju (Choi Sooyoung), a young nurse who tries to keep her patients physically active and full of cheer. Will working with Team Genie and Yeon Ju help turn Gyeo Re’s life around or is it already too late for him?
The Best Things About This Drama:
Team Genie
Sung Dong Il
Sensitivity to the subject of death, mental illness, and the terminally ill
This one got a 4/5. What a beautiful celebration of the dignity of life and death! The entire story could have been nothing but addressing the many wishes made and the stories around the wishers, and it still would have been an incredible series. This is a drama, though, and so some was included.
Despite the incredible acting by the entire cast (Gil Hae Yeon as Choi Deok-ja was particularly moving), it felt like the story was written by one person and then an editor force-fed some conflict and turmoil in the second act to meet a quota. I don't object to the added suspense, it was just that this felt a little heavy-handed in a lot of ways.
The way that they handled all of the sensitive subjects was done thoughtfully. While there is a religious component to the setting, it isn't a story about faith - more about the indomitable human spirit and how our lived experiences can form our views of death, and the legacy that we leave behind us.
Add this to your watchlist if you need an emotional or thought-provoking story to occupy yourself with.
