Marie and Yoshi

Marie is Birdie's daughter with Donatello and is the younger. Yoshi is son to Leonardo and is the first born, despite being tiny.

Birdie has two kids in the future. These two are Marie (youngest, Donnie's daughter) and Yoshi (elder, Leo's son). These are their bare minimal outfits, normally Marie in particular wears way more and varied clothes- but for the sake of reference art, they're rocking their own versions of their dads' uniforms at the same age. Shown here, Marie is 15 and Yoshi is 17. Marie's not actually tall, Yoshi's just tiny like his mum. Yoshi takes after Leo in both personality and aspirations- he ends up being a sword user and a dedicated ninja for the clan, an easy pick for future leader if he could just calm down a few notches- where Leo joked and kept things in control, Yoshi's a wild card and tends to act without thinking too far ahead. Still, he's the son with a heart of gold and way too much energy and nobody give this child coffee. Unlike Yoshi and her parents, Marie isn't as keen on the family ninja thing. She trains to the point of earning a Chunin-level ranking but it's a slow process that she spends less time on the older she gets. Marie is a Technomage- she takes her father Donatello's abilities to the next level, but has the artistic creativity to come up with impossible creations that actually work thanks to hints of magic or insane work arounds that would drive her father to insanity trying to figure out. She inherits the biological requirements for Psionics from her mother but can speak just fine without it, often opting out of using it once old enough to have that level of control- something she later teaches her mother to do, since Birdie is reliant on technological adaptations instead.

Always fun when you discover a dope-ass band, only to learn that they were a one album wonder from the time you were in high school 🙄 (I'm referring to Ocean is Theory here.) What I wouldn't give to have have more of that sound, between them, Anberlin, Ivoryline, Seabird.

At least Acceptance came back for a bit. Does Tooth and Nail have anything good at the moment aside from Off Road Minivan? They kinda sound like Brand New. They're neat.

I mean when they said in the ambition trailer ‘a war of the Eikons’ i thought we are going to see them actually having wars and fights between them, like legit fights and we were going to integrate into the politics and battle strategies being the wild card, like i really wish we had more of odin and bahamut fight, more of Ramuh and titan, and who is phoenix fighting against? Yk, we technically got that but it was so skewed to Clive pov it all just washed in the bg *sigh*

I'm a sucker for Edo-period things so I got to thinking, well, what if...

The boys are some...Yōkai hybrid (I'm not going for accuracy here, everything is super-loose) and they basically get adopted by the Hamato Clan. Yeah, that's supposed to be Yoshi, I just borrowed off his teen haircut, haha!

I have this problem about wanting to nail down details before I do things (this is why I don't GM games, I get really carried away with trying to come up with well...everything- and the problem is trying to come with the everything XD;;)

As a fan of the series "Amatsuki" I was thinking the whole enmity between humans and yōkai thing would be interesting to go off.

I have been picking at ideas and nothing is completely solid except for me wanting to make them spikier, lol. I'm not outright making them kappa- let's be real, those things are weeeird. But the lads are more claw-ier and I gave the water boys webbing. And I just like making Donnie's shell spinier I guess. I did not put their usual markings because I was going to do something with kanji and tattoos for Reasons but I am very bad at kanji and I'm going for something more stylistic anyway so anyway gotta figure out stuff to stick on their arms.

I might ditch the hakama but I thought it was fun. My Bleach days are showing lol.

Marvel's 1992 Darkhold Redeemers

“Darkhold Redeemers” was a comic created in 1992 about a group of supernatural investigators in possession of the Darkhold, an evil book of dark sorcery that has evil pages scattered over the world. In Marvel lore, the Darkhold is the book that created the first vampires. The comic was created by 90s Marvel journeyman Chris Cooper (also known for creating Starfleet Academy, a comic about the adventures of Cadet Nog that tied in to the events of Deep Space 9). 

The book is notable for three reasons. 

The first is that the premise is shockingly and coincidentally similar to the later Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with occult investigations carried out by a group that is led by a beautiful, tight outfit wearing vampire killer from a lineage of vampire hunters (Victoria Montesi, the Montesi Formula being the way vampires are destroyed in Marvel Comics), and also includes a mouthy scrappy everyman, an occult expert and archeologist who’s knowledge of the supernatural and collection of books leads to the secret of beating the creature of the week, a tough as nails government agent out of his depth when fighting the supernatural, and finally, a tremendously powerful and immortal dark antihero who joins the side of good despite his dark past (Mordred the Mystic is both Willow and Angel together, I suppose). 

The second detail is that it was the first Marvel Comic with an openly gay lead character. You might have heard it was Northstar, but this is not true. Chris Cooper is openly gay himself and always fought for inclusion of this nature. Victoria Montesi’s debut predates Northstar coming out of the closet (a comic, incidentally, that Chris Cooper wrote as associate editor on Alpha Flight, so he worked on both).

There are, likewise, many candidates for who the first gay character in Star Trek is, but one of the characters with the strongest claim to this title is Chris Cooper’s Yoshi Mishima in his Starfleet Academy series. 

Chris Cooper eventually left Marvel Comics after the 90s. Nothing happened. Most people in a freelance job like comic editing and writing are not Chris Claremont, who are there for decades. Careers in the arts don’t last forever, and they have to come to an end sometime, where you go and get a real job.

But Chris Cooper came up again decades later in the news, was the subject of an incident in 2020 when birdwatching in Central Park (he’d been a member of a birdwatching society at Harvard), where he was threatened by a female jogger, who said she would call the police as he threatened her, when we can see he did no such thing. The incident was known as either “the Central Park Birdwatching Incident” or the “Central Park Karen.” 

Looking at the footage now, it’s easy to see why it was national news and viral on the internet. Apart from the obvious racial angle, it is a chilling reminder of how a woman’s vulnerability can become a weapon, and how man’s strength can turn into a vulnerability. 

All the while watching the incident, I was like "...the Darkhold Redeemers guy? No, it couldn't be...it's probably a coincidence, Chris Cooper is a very common name." But nope, it really was the Starfleet Academy guy from the 90s.

Chris Cooper received a birdwatching show on National Geographic, and inspired many black people to go into birdwatching, but I could care less about birdwatching. I would like to see what happened next with Darkhold Redeemers and Starfleet Academy, which ended at a cliffhanger with a lot of unresolved plot points.

the pogues take mario kart very seriously.

big john bought john b a wii when he was 10, and he and jj have been mastering the art of drifting and aiming shells since. spending at least part of the weekend stuck to the chateau’s small tv screen became mandatory. oftentimes, the crew would use a quick game to handle debates or disagreements.

“i’m tellin’ you. this plan is fool proof.” jj licks the inside of his lip, fixing his hat on his head for emphasis as he stares down a visibly unimpressed john b. “you don’t think goin’ in there—guns a-blazing—is gonna surprise ‘em?”

“i think they have plenty of guns to a-blaze at us, jj.” pope deadpans, pinching the bridge of his nose as he leans back on the porch bench. jj’s resolve doesn’t falter, he only shakes his head, looking between the other two boys.

“yeah—but that’s the thing—we’re faster, dude. i mean, you saw me at the beach, i was like—bow bow, bowbowbow..”

kiara bumps your arm, drawing you out of a daydream. you turn toward her, then follow her eyes to your blabbering boyfriend. “are you hearing this?”

you didn’t have to be listening to know his plan is absurd, but you shrug anyway. “i dunno, maybe he has a point.”

“sure..”

“y’know what, jj? i think we should settle this like men.” john b crosses his arms over his chest. “on the track.”

“guys—“ kiara starts, but jj cuts her off, pointing a confident finger at john b.

“you’re on.”

next thing you know, you’re sat on the couch inside, jj sitting beside you with a white knuckle grip on the wii controller steering wheel. he’s leaned forward, elbows on his knees in the most intense focus you’ve ever seen him in. they’re split screened, jj on the left and john b on the right, perfectly mirroring where they’re sitting on the couch. the ever so reliable john b chooses classic mario, and jj sticks to his routine choice, yoshi.

everyone’s eyes are glued to the tv screen, kiara leaning on the side of the couch, biting her nails anxiously, sarah sitting on the floor between john b’s legs, and pope sprawled across the leather armchair.

the boys are on their third lap, and it’s clear the competition is getting heated just looking at them. the first two laps were filled with shit talking and all around bad sportsmanship, but now they’re silent. neck and neck, they crash through the final round of item boxes, and the air stills as their respective power-ups shuffle.

“c’mon, c’mon.. big money..” jj mutters biting his lip. you’re enthralled, one hand resting supportively on his shoulder. with john b just a few paces in front of him, jj’s first power up loads as a red shell, and he immediately shoots it at john b. it hits him dead on, a cinematic slow-mo of mario’s go-kart sputtering to an explosive stop capturing the chaos of the room perfectly. jj springs to his feet, yoshi flying past john b’s defeated mario and through the finish line like a bullet.

“john b!” kiara shouts, hands flying to her forehead in utter shock as she watches jj cross the finish line in first. john b opens his arms in confusion, looking between everyone innocently. “what? he’s getting good! i mean—what d’you want me to do?”

“man, you threw that.” pope complains, hands wiping down his face as he grapples with the reality that is jj’s elaborate plan. john b can only brush them off, which is easy with jj shouting over all of them.

he’s already hooting and hollering. “yeah! yeaaah, that’s right, baby. don’t start sum you can’t finish.” he throws the controller down on the couch, coming back over to where you’re sitting and grabbing your hands, pulling you up to stand beside him. you can’t help but laugh, his elation infectious. he pulls you to his side like a trophy, pointing at john b in satisfaction. “s’why you don’t challenge papa j to a race, ‘les you wanna get owned.”

“i can count on one hand how many times you’ve won.”

“whatever, man, this time actually counts.” his hands roam down your side, gliding his fingers down the exposed skin below your crop top and he burrows his finger tips under the waistband of your shorts. “looks like today, papa’s in charge.”

“great.”
