game nights with your boyfriend and his friends might not happen often; but once they all come together and get the event date set?

oh, a (good) chaos will definitely ensue.

“goddamit—chan hyung! get your eyes on the game!”

“yeah! go get it, seungmin!”

“felix you bronze—step on it! catch up!”

a collective of cheers and disappointed groans were imminent as soon as yoshi, seungmin’s character of the night, crosses the finish line; leaving dry bowser and baby mario—which respectively belongs to han and chan, in second and third place. If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought the boys were just competing in some major mario kart competition.

“­wah chan hyung—you’re seriously so bad at this!” changbin loudly protests—to which you genuinely thank yourself for pushing through with the rented villa agenda—while throwing his head back against the sofa in desperation. lee know, their other unfortunate teammate on the other hand, is busy pretending to box against your cackling boyfriend, having a string of ‘sorry’s falling from his lips.

“argh!” switching his target in desperation, changbin immediately puts his hands together and faces you with his attempt of salvation. “please switch teams with me! i can’t do this any longer! he’s so bad!” he pleaded, nearly earning himself a thrown nintendo controller on the head from chan if it wasn’t for your swift hands, snatching the heavy plastic from your pouting boyfriend. Well, not that you mind though, considering how adorable your boyfriend looked while he sulks.

“yah yah yah—changbin hyung!” seungmin intercepted—and if you know something about the kim seungmin, then his iconic multiple-hit comment is about to pop off. “no one told you to be so bad with rock paper scissors anyway!” the younger pointed out, a smug grin etched across the span of his face, “that’s why you ended up with chan hyung!”

“hey!” your boyfriend was the first to react, pointing at the smug younger one—and of course, it’s not changbin if he didn’t follow suit.

“yah! you prick!” huffing and puffing, changbin was quick on his feet as soon as seungmin stuck out his tongue, further provoking the curly haired male while he ran away—only to fish more of changbin’s loud shouts after the younger. “yah kim seungmin! come back here!”

series of laughter follows the disappearance of the two; to which everyone know by heart now, is also the best time for the rest of the kids to take their water and bathroom break—and alongside that, also became the best time for chan to finally take a proper look at you.

“you’re still good, baby?” the switch in his demeanor made you giggle as you lean into chan’s warm touch on your cheek. despite having witnessed the shift countless of times, the way chan’s voice became very soft when he spoke with you never fails to make your heart flutter. “it’s almost 1 am, aren’t you sleepy yet?”

“i’m good,” a smile follows your simple answer whilst your arms found their home around your boyfriend’s waist, snuggling closer to his warmth while chan lifts your legs to cross over his lap. “can last at least 2 more games, i think. besides, i drank some of the coffee jeongin brewed earlier, remember?”

chan’s exaggerated sigh along with his usual disapproving head shake ignites another set of laugh within you, fishing another pout to appear on his plump lips. “knew i shouldn’t have trusted jeongin,” he dramatically piched his nose bridge, trying to look as disappointed as he could. “he’s part of the bad peaches club after all.”

“i heard that!”

jeongin’s resounding shout from the kitchen startles both you and chan—causing your laughter and chan’s to grow in volume. “not sorry!” chan’s reply simply earned a grunt from the younger, not wanting to further continue the discourse while he’s busy arguing with hyunjin about who can get their hands on the last can of beer in the fridge.

“but anyway,” chan’s gaze softened as they returned to you, running his fingers mindlessly in your soft hair, “tell me whenever you feel sleepy, okay? we’ll go to bed right away.”

“i know,” an exaggerated sigh left your lips as you immitate your boyfriend’s previous antics, “this isn’t my first rodeo, you know?” you snickered as you playfully stuck out your tongue—which in turn only further cause the adoration in his chest to bubble.

oh, how he wish you’re all alone right now. he’d immediately tackle you into a cuddle and plant several dozens of light kisses across your face and neck—but he must resist. after all, he wouldn’t want the kids to tease you over something like that.

“gosh, you’re so annoying,” he hummed, lips betraying him as it formed into a massive grin across his lightly flushed cheeks, “think you’ve been hanging around the kids too much. i should keep a schedule for your visits from now on.”

“nooo!”

4 round of games and 20 minutes later, another wave of commotion returns as the race for second place—since first place has again been coveted by the representative agent of chaos, the kim seungmin—ensues between lee know and han.

“han jisung! step on it step on it!”

“lee know hyung! shi—why are you getting as bad as chan hyung!”

“yah! baby, tell—“

chan’s words immediately died down in his throat as soon as his gaze landed on your peacefully sleeping face—plea to defend himself from his kids vaporized and replaced with a soft thump in his chest. You looked so peaceful with your head resting against his shoulder—a massive contrast to the chaos surrounding you—and chan could feel his heart swell. you looked so cute; especially with your fingers wrapped tightly around the controller seungmin had just handed you a few moments prior.

had you been fighting off the drowsiness all along?

carefully pulling you into his lap, chan smiled as he gently peeled the controller off of your hand before dropping it directly onto hyunjin’s unsuspecting lap, startling the younger.

“ya—“

“shut it,” chan hissed between gritted teeth, easily pulling hyunjin’s focus from the chaos happening on screen and to you—who immediately nodded his head knowingly when he realized what’s happening.

“yah lee min—ow! what was th—oh.”

chan’s next target was changbin—who immediately received a slap on the back instead of chan’s quiet warning. it’s rather effective, however, considering outside of the two current players, everyone now has their eyes on you.

“keep it quiet—if my baby wakes up because of any of you,” chan eyed every single one of his kids, not even caring how severe the teasing he’ll receive by the daylight will be for whatever he’ll be saying next,

“i’m not gonna let it slide.”

As you aged, you grew to resent any memory of the sex-centered district, and when the opportunity arose, you took the chance to be taught by your sensei, the former Water Hashira Sakonji Urokodaki. And while the life of a demon slayer and spouse was fun, it was only a matter of time for your lover to uncover your past...

🌸 When you first met Kagaya, you were a couple of young lovers. And as he grew sicker, your missions slowed and you decided to hang up your nichirin blade and only train certain slayers in your art

🌸 This man is blind and has been for quite a while, so as you aged together, he never actually saw your face for long. But, when he did, you would be surprised when he didn't compliment your face and frame, but rather your traits and how you were with your children

🌸 It was the day that you received a letter from Sora, your mother and your previous Oiran, that your husband finally understood why you preferred to keep your past behind you

"Oyakata-sama, we at the Butterfly Estate have received a letter important to your wife." Shinobu said gently as he handed the paper to your children.

🌸 Hinaki kept her smile as she lightly grasped the written-on note, her short {H/C} hair moving in the wind while her sister, Nichika, stood beside their father, making sure he stayed upright since you were gone for a small training with Zenitsu Agatsuma

"Thank you for showing me this, my child. You are excused."

🌸 Shinobu bowed and wished Kagaya good health before walking away, her hand being laid on her sword's handle bottom. Meanwhile, you landed the final slash against Zenitsu's blade, making it fly into the air and land in your hand

"Ugh! I'm never gonna get better..." The young slayer said, planting his head into the dirt.

"Your swordsmanship is getting better, Agatsuma. Don't beat yourself up about such a minor failure. Remember, I was once a Hashira." You chuckled.

"Yeah, yeah..." He mumbled.

"Lady Ubuyashiki!" You heard a peppy cheer behind you, making you spin around and sheath your sword.

"What is it you need, Mitsuri?" You asked.

"Oyakata-sama wished for your presence back at your estate."

"Oh, well thank goodness we finished our training up now. And Mitsuri, when are you free to cook again?"

"Anytime, my next mission is set to happen in about four days!" She said cheerily with her cute smile on her face.

"Perfect, I shall stop by after tomorrow."

"Okay! See you then, Lady Ubuyashiki!"

🌸 As you jumped from place to place back to your estate, you landed back down on the floor. Taking your old haori off and folding it to have one of your children put it away, you strolled down the halls to you and your husband's room

🌸 You caught sight of your husband sitting down with your four daughters and son in your room, recanting an old story he memorized long ago before their births. And as they announced your presence, he smiled and told them to go outside and play while you both talked

"Make sure you come inside before the sun burns your skin." You said as they walked off to grab their ball to play.

"Y/N... I have obtained a letter from a woman named Sora. She said, by what Hinaki said, she wished to visit you and wished you good luck away from the Entertainment District in Yoshiwara. I meant not to pry into your privacy, but please tell me the truth; did you work in a Oiran house?"

🌸 Sighing and sitting down in front of your husband, you grasped his hands gently, rubbing your fingers against the dorsal of his hand

"My love, that is true. But to a different degree. My mother was a courtesan in Lady Sora's estate. She had gotten pregnant one night and it resulted in me being born, due to her part in the estate, she had to return with me after a couple years. I grew up there until my former master, Sakonji Urokodaki, took me away with my mother's permission and trained me to become a demon slayer." You said. "But, I don't hate my past. Without that, I wouldn't have met you and had our amazing children. You are the only person I will ever love, I promise."

"I had no doubt in that, Y/N. I just wished to understand the letter more. And I am happy to meet a woman you seemingly look upon highly."

"I love you, Kagaya." You said as you kissed his head.

"And I love you just as much, Y/N."

❤️‍🔥 When you first met Rengoku, you were caught off-guard by how kind and pure of heart he was. He had approached you when you became a pillar with your fellow Sakonji-trained slayer, Tomioka Giyuu

❤️‍🔥 You began to hang around Rengoku whenever you noticed Giyuu was busy or needed some kind of space. And as you two spent more time together, the Water and Love Hashiras began to ask you both on what was going on with you two

"Hey Rengoku! Can I ask you something?" Mitsuri asked. "Go ahead!" "You've been hanging out with L/N a lot more lately. And you seemingly get red in the face when they look at you, do you like them?" "..." "Oh my gosh! You do! How cute! You guys would have the cutest children! I wonder if they're have yours of her hair colors! Or your eyes!" "Mitsuri..."

"Y/N... I noticed you've been around Rengoku a lot more. Is there any specific reason for it?" Giyuu asked you. "Eh- what do you mean, Giyuu?" "Every time you walk away from him, he seems to dim. As if he was sad to see you go. Like a child when their puppy runs away from them." "He may just be sad because his friend had something new to do." "Or he likes you beyond friendship." "...Well that was blatant...and Giyuu! That's highly doubtful. Why would someone as cheery and loving as Rengoku like someone like me..." "Who knows? I'm not Rengoku." "Giyuu!"

❤️‍🔥 Later that week, you and Rengoku were set to go on a mission on what was believed to be a lowermoon's location. And during the entire fight, he seemingly got more aggressive when the demon tried touching you

❤️‍🔥 The demon specifically had wrapped his long and stretchy arms around your waist, making you freeze and go into a survival instinct mode. You grabbed your sword and stabbed his eye, making him flinch away in pain as Rengoku went in for the kill

❤️‍🔥 The Flame Hashira brought you back to the Wisteria Estate and began to speak with you after cleaning up and he asked you why you seemingly froze up and acted on pure instincts as if you have done that before

❤️‍🔥 You sighed and curled into a ball, making Rengoku sit beside you and make a gesture to hug you. And, when you saw him, you jumped into his arms and started crying and telling him about everything

❤️‍🔥 From your mother to your past Oiran to the multiple men who tried to make you into a courtesan despite your younger age -you didn't even reach 18 at that time- to when you left and lost all contact with your mother, which with the touch of the demon making all of those memories flash back

"Oh L/N... I had no idea. I'm so sorry." He said, his voice slightly down from his volume.

"It's alright... it's nice to get that off my chest though. Thank you for listening, Rengoku."

"Kyojuro. You can call me Kyojuro."

"Then you can call me Y/N."

❤️‍🔥 As you smiled at one another, you laid your head down on his shoulder, making him wrap his arms around you tightly, as if he was saying 'you were safe' and 'he was going to protect you'

Name: Blewbird Debut: Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Blewbird is weird. I mean, no duh, it's being featured on "Weird Mario Enemies," even if our blog title gets less and less fitting by the day, but I mean weirder than you'd realize by just looking at it at a glance. If you just take a quick glance at it, you might not think much of it -- just a stylized cartoon bluebird, reminiscent of The Artist Formerly Known As Twitter.

But then you look at it more closely, notice things like its black shell and brown shoes. How weirdly smooth its skin is, without even the suggestion of feathers. The fact it doesn't have wings at all. The fact these things burrow out of the ground.

Oh, and let's not forget the fact they shoot off their own beaks!

Yeah, let's not ignore the main hook of the enemy here! Blewbirds predominantly appear in the level Blewbird Roost, where they'll stand against walls and shoot out their beaks at Mario and Friends. Of course, usually their beaks end up sticking to walls across from them...

And unfurling into platforms! That's right! Blewbirds are an animal that evolved to create Platforming Challenges! Is this how they traverse all the open air in the caves they live in without wings? It's not like they can burrow everywhere!

So whatever Blewbirds are, I'm pretty sure they're not birds. Blewbirds are birds in the sense that jellyfish are fish. (A comparison I'm pretty sure I've made multiple times on the blog at this point.) But if they aren't birds, then what are they? Well, let's take another look at Blewbird without its beak...

Does it remind you of anything...?

Because it reminds me of Birdo, another character who's named after a bird for no particularly good reason whatsoever! Almost like it's all connected... But I mean, the similarities are hard to ignore -- the tube mouth optimized for shooting projectiles, the white underbelly, the weirdly smooth skin, heck, you could probably make the very bold argument that Blewbird's ponytail and Birdo's bow are connected somehow.

But wait! I'm not ending things right there, because Blewbird doesn't only have similarities to Birdo...

You see, Nintendo has connected the Birdos and Yoshis for a while now, as Mario's main Weird Dinosaur Characters, but there hasn't been an awful lot actually connecting them in-universe... until now?! For you see, I'm making the radical claim that Blewbirds are proof of a missing link species that connects the Yoshis and Birdos! Look at it! The tube mouth of Birdo. The shell and shoes of Yoshi. It's all so clear now!

Blewbirds aren't birds! They're some sort of weird dinosaur! Just like... just like... just like real birds. Hmm.

Maybe I need to rethink the point I was making with this post. Taxonomy is weird, guys.

Oh! Hold on, I need to answer that. Hello?

Hmmm... as a matter of fact, I think I am! I spent so much time talking about Yoshis and Birdos that I forgot to do this: *touches Wonder Flower to trigger Wonder Effect for the post*

During Blewbird Roost's Wonder Effect, Blewbirds will start blowing very large, very colorful bubbles! Your character can bounce on these bubbles to go *Pauline voice* ♪ High up in the sky~! ♪, but you need to be careful, since each bubble pops when you jump on it! The number of Blewbirds in the Blewbird Roost doesn't make that much of an issue, but in a Special World level where you're a Goomba who can hardly jump at all? Well... Good Luck!

That being said, this raises even more questions about Blewbird anatomy, because they blow these bubbles out of their beaks! You know, the ones they shoot off that, as far as I'm aware, aren't even part of their bodies? And in order to blow bubbles out of their beak, their mouth has been moved to the end of it! What is going on here?!

I'm not sure, but I can try to provide a relatable human analogy! Imagine if you put a Cone in your mouth, but someone nearby touched a Wonder Flower, so the Cone fused to your face and the mouth was at the end of the Cone, and you were very scared about this development so you tried to scream but only bubbles came out. We've all been there! And for the Blewbird, it's exactly like this. Hopefully now you understand!

I think an awful lot about Splinter believing in the start of the series that he'd lost his humanity.

For the sake of someone named Pete, I will go through the events in chronological order for once-

In Lone Rat and Cubs, Splinter tells the turtles about their time spent running from the Kraang before they found their forever home, and we learn that Splinter didn't easily slip into his new role. Sure, he cared for the turtles, kept them fed and sheltered them from the elements, but he still called them "creatures" and "turtles" before naming them. He didn't see this as an opportunistic situation where he miraculously became a father to a second batch of kids, but rather that he'd fallen into a pool of misfortune and would need to live with this new form while protecting himself and the turtles.

"What terrible deed did I do in a past life that such a curse has befallen me?"

As he considers the turtles' growth and the possibility of a future with them, he then begins to view himself as a potential father. He explains that he wondered if he had the discipline to be a proper father, especially after the loss of his first family, and he realizes it was something he wanted to be regardless of discipline or odd circumstances.

And so, he claims the turtles as his own, and accepts his role as their father.

Though he'd grown accustomed to being a mutant rat over the years, he still draws a line between "Hamato Yoshi" and "Splinter" without knowing it, albeit a blurry and ephemeral one drawn in ever changing sand.

We hear Splinter in the second episode of the series talking about the loss of his family, his home, and his own name. He more or less tells Leo that being mutated erased whatever connection he formally had to the name "Hamato," and the idea is further supported by a similar and more somber scene in I, Monster. Splinter fights off the Rat King's control as he again laments that his entire clan and family, even his humanity, is gone, and he has nothing but the turtles left for him in this new life. Fortunately, he retains his sense of self post mutation, and he's presented from the beginning of the series as one who's in control of himself, both to his sons and friends of theirs, as well as any enemy that comes their way.

However, that presentation of control gives us a bit of a look into his psyche and allows us to consider the idea of him still struggling to come to terms with not being human anymore.

With the introduction of the Rat King, he's taunted by a potential loss of that control for the first time and it shakes him to his core. It makes sense for him to be shaken up since all that'd be left without him is a mindless, humanoid rat who'd lost touch with the human it used to be. Which is why it's so compelling that his sons, particularly Leo, are so adamant about reinforcing the fact that his mutation doesn't erase who he is. It's incredibly noteworthy what Leo says to him when trying to break the Rat King's control over him, "Remember who you are!"

Not who he once was, or the human he used to be, but who he is.

They never viewed Splinter as a separate being from Hamato Yoshi.

The boys aren't strangers to Splinter's old life before them, and they're very much aware of everything he'd lost; the guy talks about certain things frequently enough for them to know his tragedies and recite them without skipping a letter. It's his recollections of the tribulations he suffered through that helped them understand that his life with them is undeniably disconnected from his life with Tang Shen, but not unrelated.

He's still Hamato Yoshi, and his place will always be with his family.

Having been defeated by Splinter, the Rat King runs to find another way of tormenting him, and his perfect target is fear.

Though we got a brief look into this during their first encounter with Falco's twisted appearance, it's not until Of Rats and Men that we get further insight into another layer of Splinter's concern with his rat half: the repercussions that could result from the loss of control.

Throughout all of his years of raising his sons, not once did he ever treat them with the intention to frighten them and make them wary of his every move. The Rat King can easily use that fear to his advantage and weaken Splinter's mental stability enough to figure out how to make mutants similar to him. And he truly makes use of that fear by turning Splinter into his personal puppet.

There's still a considerable amount of concern on the turtles' end that pierces through that fear though. After Splinter teleports across the room to distance himself, Leo looked ready to leap to his side, and the others, despite being threatened literal seconds earlier, remain where they are and are equally concerned.

Eventually, the Rat King strikes again and everyone begins to piece together what's going on when Splinter loses it. Mikey is absolutely terrified and staggered by what happened, and Raph and Donnie tread with caution while Leo and April are the first ones to approach Splinter.

The TV gives them extra confirmation that Falco is back, and to everyone's surprise, Splinter refuses to help them fight Falco, even when Casey is dragged down a manhole by one of the mutated rats in their first attempt to clear the streets. It's not an easy choice for Splinter to make because we see how guilty he feels for his refusal, but the gang doesn't fault him for refusing either. No matter how much they want for Splinter to join them, he's right to worry about what the Rat King, now stronger than before, could force him to do.

April speaks for everyone though when she tells him they all believe in him. They make it known that they aren't afraid of what may happen, and they especially aren't afraid of him.

Unsurprisingly, Splinter changes his mind at the last minute, and, with the help of a recently mutated cat, he chases Falco down to deal with him once and for all. Protecting his family takes priority over his doubts, and by the end of the episode, he overcomes his fear of the Rat King controlling him.

He has his humanity, and that's what makes him different from the rat Falco constantly made him out to be.

And for the first time in the series, in The Lonely Mutation of Baxter Stockman, he says out loud that he has his humanity and is thankful he's fortunate enough to still have it when others lose it post mutation.

I previously went a bit more in depth about it in this post but the boys have witnessed Splinter grappling with being a rat, particularly with the Rat King's meddling, and Donnie sincerely believed giving him retromutagen would be something he'd want. This was clearly an idea that's been weighing on Donnie's mind for a while considering that he seemingly kept quiet about his plan until he completed the retromutagen, and he's the most upset when he has to use the remaining dosage for Kirby.

But Splinter tells him and the other turtles he's content as he is and wouldn't do anything to change himself this far in. And the boys all seem content with his answer.

With the invasion of the Kraang and his defeat at the hands of the Shredder, Splinter again comes face to face with his mutated genes, and there's no Rat King stringing him along this time. He'd been swallowed by delirium with the lack of familial support to pull him out of it, and he became spiritually disconnected from his body as a result. The gang is initially caught off guard by Splinter's state, but they quickly get over it and work to subdue him.

While the boys are pulled away into battle, April uses her powers to sift through Splinter's memories and, after showing him the time he asked her to train with him, we see a memory with the turtles, Karai, and his only family portrait from before his mutation:

Seeing his family is what manages to bring him back to his senses.

We the audience, as well as Splinter, figured that was the end of his troubles with being a mutant rat, but Shredder decided to bathe in some super juice and sent Splinter careening a thousand feet into a dark cavern, the same one Splinter sent Falco down two seasons ago. Being thrown into near total darkness with a fairly debilitating injury and fever was the perfect recipe for him to begin hallucinating, and he believes the Rat King is attacking him when he's most vulnerable. But just when he feels himself slipping further away, his mind goes straight to the day his sons celebrated their 15th mutation day, and just beyond them is Tang Shen.

He regains his clarity, grasps that Falco's been dead the whole time, and is immensely relieved to see Donnie and Mikey after what he'd been through.

"Perhaps a teacher, but never my master."

Despite Fly Guys being very common in the Yoshi series, Snifits with propellers have only ever appeared in Yoshi Touch & Go, and not in any mainline Yoshi's Island games.

What are your hopes for the mario movie 2?

More of these two being on screen together for starters:

Their relationship was probably the best part of the first movie. Mario and Luigi really do work off each other so well, both as an effective team and an entertaining dynamic. If they carry that same energy throughout the sequel that would be fantastic.

On that note, Luigi needs to interact with the rest of the main cast. He got a quick one-sentence exchange with Peach and not a word in with anyone else, and I really want to see those friendships explored.

I'm also excited to see the world expanded upon. One area where The Super Mario Bros. Movie really excelled was the locations. They felt authentic to the games while at the same time allowing animators and designers wiggle room to exercise creativity, leading to really fresh and vibrant takes on nostalgic worlds.

And on top of new locations, there are so many characters I'd like to see introduced, but I'm also a little tentative about wanting too much too fast.

We know that we're going to get Yoshi in the sequel, and part of me wants to see The Koopalings too, though I have to admit that seven characters with their own individual personalities would be a lot juggle at once.

Another enemy that I want to see show up are the boos, partly because the sooner we get boos the sooner we might get a Luigi's Mansion Movie.

But at the same time I don't want the film to have a glut of new faces that barely get touched upon. What I really want is a slow drip-feed of characters that gradually expands upon the enormous world. But I won't deny there are so many good options with a whole lot of potential (so long as they're handled by passionate people who get the source material.)

I'm also hoping the sequel's a little longer than the first movie. Not by much, just by like... ten minutes or so, only to give things a bit more time to breathe.
