i have two that i can explain below, but it's not the end of the world to me (well no. one bothers me but also w/e). ultimately i split the way i view tdj in the sense of like, there's au stuff that is more canon-compliant and then there's alt-uni stuff that's canon-compliant, but also au stuff that i love but feel it's a bit ooo but they're my little playthings so idc, lmao.

but here are two. the first one is a hill i'm willing to die on. the second is me just like, pleaseeeeee can we consider but not a big deal, lmao.

gaon never had any intention of marrying soohyun, dating her or believed he would actually end up with her. he did not romantically love her in any sense of the word. i see this written in fic quite often, and i've explained this is previous meta posts - but the reason gaon ran back to soohyun and kissed her wasn't because he woke up and realized his feelings. he went back to what he knew; he went to her because she was comfortable, because it's all he's ever known, and the thought of parting from that was terrifying. let's even take gahan out of this - yohan challenged gaon in a way he'd never experienced. yohan let gaon exist and make mistakes and be himself for what's arguably the first time in his life. soohyun didn't like that, and gaon was given an ultimatum by her because she didn't like his choices. she whipped him back into her 'perfect boy' box she's held the key to for years, and he did it because he couldn't lose her. not because he was in love with her but because when you've known someone since you were 16 years old and they were there for you through one of the darkest times of your life and that's one of the only friends you have? yeah, what choice are you going to be making between that or an extremely agenda-driven, sometimes violent older man willing to bend the law and that you've only known for just a few months? if that also meant giving into soohyun's advances and dating/marrying her and being unhappy for the rest of his life, gaon was willing to do it. gaon's growth in the tdj is recognizing that being in that box with the professor and soohyun kept him from the reality of the world, but going about finding justice yohan's way only puts more people in danger. gaon's a hidden little gem ready to become the third option and answer for a country that desperately needed change.

ik we all think yohan is a sex pot ,and he weaponizes his beauty to get what he wants, which i think is trueeeee. but when it comes to actual sex, not just the flirting side, i have two ideas i think can coexist: yohan has slept with others vs. yohan has never been with anyone at all, and i wish the latter was explore more because it makes a whole lot of sense to me that yohan is touch-averse because of the physical abuse; he was never liked as a child/teen, and he's always had other priorities and chose to focus on schooling over dating. his self-loathing and believing he was truly a monster also factors into this.

Who is your favourite character (s) from TDJ?

It has to be kang yohan. my pathetic little meow meow, who is also a byronic antihero, who is also just someone's gay uncle. he contains multitudes <3

What is your favourite episode?

I'd need to do a throrough rewatch before I could comment but i did see ep 4 again recently and that was a banger

Where do you see your favourite character in 10 years?

I hope he is peacefully retired from law, and deeply immersed in some other job with far lower stakes that he can get strangely passionate about. i think he tried to retire fully for maybe a year and got bored so he picked up a small job rehoming cats for something to do :3

he is of course still living with gaon and elijah comes to visit often

Why do you think The Devil Judge fandom continues to this day? (We still see art and fics published and people continue to engage. Considering the show ended 3 years ago with only 16 episodes, this is a feat - at least to me)

Both the incredible construction of the show, and the love that it inspired in people. It's a show rich with ideas and themes that provoke strong feelings (justice, abuse of power, religion, family, yohan's weird brother thing), it's deeply powerful, and its just plain good.

How did you find The Devil Judge? (What made you watch?)

I watched Beyond Evil first and stumbled across tdj through tumblr and the wondeful community that around these shows !!

I always do, unless they're rude, then they're just deleted. There's no point in fighting/arguing with someone who doesn't understand the story I'm trying to tell

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, my Chinese Paladin 4 fic Promise to Keep. It's one of my only fics that has Major Character Death, which is INCREDIBLY rare for me, but it's the only fic I've ever felt comfortable writing an MCD for because I was actually okay with the ending of the drama. But it won't ever happen again because I cried while writing this fic and I don't think I can go through it again

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

All of them but Promise to Keep

7. Do you write crossovers?

Yeah. I mainly do crossovers between Killer and Healer and S.C.I., but I've done crossovers with other dramas too

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I did, yeah, and made a whole fucking post about it because the person was really fucking rude and not only came for me, but for my readers and if you come for me, fine, I'll just delete the comment, but the moment you come for my readers I will fucking end you

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I did, back when I wrote for the Untamed. Someone had took my The Untamed Moments and started posting it, word for fucking word, in Spanish over on Wattpad. Thankfully a reader told me about it and I got it taken down but to my knowledge, none of my fics since then have been stolen

Oh yeah, a few. It makes me really happy/honored

Waaaay back on AsianFanFics...haven't since then

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

It's been almost 3 years and I'm still not normal about them

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I always finish my WIPs, for the most part. It's very rare that I don't

Dialogue and anything that has to do with describing crime scenes or forensics. Or anything mafia related

Run ons, maybe. But sometimes, you just gotta

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I never write full dialogue in other languages, but I will use words, like "gege" or "hyung". Sometimes, I'll curse in another language, if I know what it is (mainly in Japanese)

First proper fic was either for Dragonball or Black Butler

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

I don't know, no new fandom/ship has like...caught me and made me want to write. If I watch a new show, I mainly just like...want to make an au out of it for my current ships

My baby, my beloved, my Killer and Healer rewrite, right here: 恨君不似江楼月 | Killer and Healer.

It's a fic that I don't think I can ever top. The amount of time and effort and tears that I put into this fic...I just love it a lot. And I'm super proud of it. I mean, I love all my fics, don't get me wrong, but nothing can ever probably beat this fic

The Devil Judge Rewatch Ep 8 (Part 3)

Continuation of Part 2, which can be found here.

In Part 2, we left off with Gaon finally meeting Yohan's team, and starting off on the wrong footing. Accusing them of working for Yohan only for the money.

Only to find out how utterly wrong he was.

That each of them had a tragic story where justice hadn't been served, leaving them with loss and grief and pain that was similar to how Gaon, as well as, Yohan feels.

And this, I believe, is what had prompted Gaon to say all these to Professor Min, when he had decided to take Yohan's side.

It hadn't been easy for Gaon to reach this stage where he finally decided to leave his familiar world behind - including the two persons he had got left in his life - Soohyun and Professor Min.

And we see him agonising over it throughout the entire episode. Starting with how suspicious he was while Yohan was driving him home from the prison.

Yohan telling him to think only of himself and not do anything silly.

But Gaon couldn't stop doubting Yohan's intention, not with how Yohan seemed to be in cahoots with the prison wardens. Nodding to them and exchanging secret glances like he had bribed them.

And I love how TDJ had filmed the two of them after they had found out about the suicide of the Social Responsibility Foundation's president.

Gaon not looking in the direction that Yohan was facing, except to glare at him with such displeasure and distrust on his face.

And we also have this interesting shot - Yohan talking about how there is no justice in reality as he looked out the window.

But we do get to see his reflection in the glass as if he was discreetly checking on Gaon who, from this zoom-out shot, we can see him standing roughly in that direction.

And Gaon was so troubled, he had even tried to ask Elijah.

It just show how desperate he was that Gaon would resort to seeking a 16-year-old for her opinion.

And I suspect that, maybe, a part of him really wanted to believe and trust Yohan. That he hadn't pulled any trick just like what Soohyun had said when they met for drinks at the bar.

Cause Gaon's reaction, after what Soohyun had said. It just seemed odd like he was expecting such a reaction from her.

And it goes to show that, maybe he didn't really want to agree with Soohyun and all she had said. Cause deep down inside, I think he really wanted to side with Yohan's point-of-view - hence his agony.

Cha Eun Woo's captivating performance as Priest John in 'Island' leaves viewers speechless

Cha Eun Woo left Korean and international audiences speechless with his incredible acting in 'Island's finale.

On January 13, 'Island' aired its final two episodes for season 1, and the highlight of the finale was Cha Eun Woo's heartwrenching acting as Priest John/Yohan.

The main focus of episodes 5 & 6 was the sad tale of two brothers who found each other after ages only to lose each other again. The emotions were running high in the season finale, and people were left crying to see Priest John's desperation and heartbreak. Cha Eun Woo's acting as a desperate, broken man trying to save his loved one and his tears were well-received by Knetz as well as the international audience.

Here is what Knetz said on the Korean forum about Cha Eun Woo's acting and crying scenes in Island:

Whenever Cha Eunwoo cried, I thought my heart would break

I can really see the acting here... Eunwoo is amazing. You really have everything.

Cha Eun-Woo's acting has improved a lot. He seems to have failed to shine in realistic acting because of his unrealistic appearance. I think it's the power of acting + the face that doesn't look awkward at all in that scene. It was convincing

'even gods can't change the past'. i liked writing about gahan doing something immoral for understandable reasons.

2. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

i've improved at writing settings and complex characters!

4. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

'everything everywhere all at once', hands down. i started it Mar of 2023, nearly abandoned it Sept of 2023, and completed it Aug of 2024. it's my only chronological chaptered story and was challenging bc i had to follow a linear plot rather than jumping back and forth like i do for my other stories. this took A LOT of grit and determination. i am so proud of myself for completing it. 

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

'even gods can't change the past'. it's about gaon and yohan falling in love while gaon is married and caring for his terminally ill child. it's a niche idea but the people who read it were moved by it and reached out to tell me so.

6. Favorite title you used.

'my heart is going back to you, i just don't know'. it's a line from the TDJ song 'The Nights' and so hauntingly beautiful that i'm thrilled to pay homage to it in one of my more complex stories. 

7. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?

i used 'The Nights' in three different stories: my heart goes back to you, eeaao, and eating alone eating together 

8. What work was the quickest to write?

'dreams shall come true', where yohan and gaon practice sparring and it turns heated. i wrote it in a day. 

9. What work took you the longest to write?

after eeaao, probably 'my heart goes back to you'. it's more layered than my other stories, so i need to be well rested and energized to write, which is a tougher state of mind to achieve. but my anon likes it and i enjoy writing for them ♥️♥️

10. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

12! you can read about most of them here. there's a hades and persephone one too

11. What’s your longest work of the year?

eeaao at 63,393. interestingly, 'even gods can't change the past' is my second at 20,405, which is surprising because i wrote that in a few weeks whereas eeaao took 1.5 yrs

'the second coming' which is 642 words. it's incomplete tho.

gaon in the 'second coming'. he's like sunah in this au, so writing him to be familiar but also new has been challenging

elijah and yohan. i'm trying to get better at writing young adults/youth/kids where they have full personalities but are still impressionable

'even gods can't change the past' because i like how it flows. but i generally reread my works extensively in the week after they're published to revel in the final thing

21. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

it's a passage from ch 8 of eeaao from gaon's pov:

he suddenly remembers the night he got into that accident. how he flew off his bike and skidded the length of the tarmac until he came to rolling stop in the dirt lining the freeway, flat on his back. he’d staggered to his feet and pulled his hopelessly scratched helmet off, pushing the sweat-soaked hair out of his face to look up --

-- only to pause, stunned. it was nighttime outside Seoul. he could see all the stars that light pollution shrouded in the inner city. an entire sea of them, twinkling. it was magical. it was sublime. had gaon come twelve hours prior, he would've seen this landscape under sunlight. the lake would've been iridescent blue; the trees rich with autumnal oranges, yellows and reds, colors so vivid he would be able taste them. things which had made his heart beat fast and his tongue feel thick, all his smallness before the beauty of the world.

he hadn't come during the day because he'd spent the previous however many days agonizing over yohan. gaon, who loved plants partly through nurture and definitely by nature, had completely missed the leaves changing color when it was something he looked forward to every year.

staring up at the sky, breath misting in the frigid air and gradually becoming aware of the throbbing pain in his wrist and along his side, face wet and hot with tears leaking into his mouth, gaon had realized something big: he would be okay living with grief that ebbed and flowed, under a debt that grew in size rather than diminished, absent his parents and absent his lover, if it meant he got to see the sky like this. if gaon could just see the seasons change from crisp autumn to mild winter followed by new spring.

KETIKA NAFSU DUNIAWI TAK BISA DIKENDALIKAN

Renungan Selasa, 14 Januari 2025 Nas: Markus 6:14-29

Raja Herodes juga mendengar tentang Yesus, sebab nama-Nya sudah terkenal dan orang mengatakan: "Yohanes Pembaptis sudah bangkit dari antara orang mati dan itulah sebabnya kuasa-kuasa itu bekerja di dalam Dia." Yang lain mengatakan: "Dia itu Elia!" Yang lain lagi mengatakan: "Dia itu seorang nabi sama seperti nabi-nabi yang dahulu." Waktu Herodes mendengar hal itu, ia berkata: "Bukan, dia itu Yohanes yang sudah kupenggal kepalanya, dan yang bangkit lagi." - Markus 6:14-16

Dalam Markus 6:14-29, diceritakan tentang peristiwa kematian Yohanes Pembaptis yang terjadi karena nafsu duniawi yang tidak terkendali. Kisah ini mencerminkan bagaimana keinginan yang tidak terkendali, jika tidak dikelola dengan bijaksana, dapat membawa konsekuensi yang tragis.

Berikut poin-poin penting dalam kisah ini:

(1) Herodes dan nafsu kekuasaan serta hedonisme. Herodes Antipas hidup dalam kemewahan dan kesenangan duniawi. Ia menikahi Herodias, istri saudaranya sendiri, yang menurut Yohanes Pembaptis adalah dosa. Meskipun Herodes menghormati Yohanes dan mengakui kebenarannya, nafsu dan ambisinya mencegahnya bertindak benar

(2) Herodias dan kebencian yang menguasai. Herodias sangat membenci Yohanes karena ia menegur pernikahannya dengan Herodes. Kebenciannya membuatnya merencanakan pembunuhan Yohanes melalui cara manipulatif. Hal ini menunjukkan bagaimana keinginan membalas dendam yang tidak terkendali dapat menghancurkan hati nurani seseorang.

(3) Janji yang didasari nafsu dan emosi. Pada pesta ulang tahun Herodes, Salome, putri Herodias, menari dengan memikat di hadapan Herodes dan para tamunya. Karena terpesona, Herodes membuat janji emosional, menawarkan apapun yang Salome minta. Nafsu dan kebanggaan membuatnya tidak berpikir rasional.

(4) Akibat dari Nafsu Duniawi. Salome, atas saran Herodias, meminta kepala Yohanes Pembaptis di atas piring. Meskipun Herodes sebenarnya enggan, ia memenuhi permintaan itu karena rasa malu dan takut kehilangan wibawa di depan tamu-tamunya. Hal ini menunjukkan bagaimana keinginan mempertahankan citra sosial dapat menyebabkan seseorang melanggar hati nurani dan kebenaran.

Refleksi: Kisah ini mengajarkan bahwa nafsu duniawi yang tidak terkendali—entah itu berupa kebencian, keinginan akan kekuasaan, atau nafsu hedonis—dapat membawa kehancuran, baik bagi diri sendiri maupun orang lain. Kita dipanggil untuk mengendalikan hawa nafsu melalui hikmat, ketaatan pada firman Tuhan, dan kekuatan Roh Kudus. Seperti yang tertulis dalam Galatia 5:22-23, buah Roh mencakup pengendalian diri, yang sangat penting untuk melawan godaan duniawi.
